Residents and staff of Ashburton resthome, Princes Court, have been left frustrated after their transportation van was the target of vandals over the weekend, leaving them with no way to get around.

The van is used to take residents on trips out of the resthome two times a week.

The vandals caused significant damage, including smashing windows and ripping parts of the dashboard off its mounting. Insurance was being organ-

ised to cover the damage, but residents would miss out on a trip to Awa Awa Reserve near Methven tomorrow.

Princes Court staff member, Chrissie, who asked not to have her last name published, said the news of the damage had distressed some residents.

“To get out was a big joy and some of the residents were quite distraught,” she said.

“It’s an awful thing to happen anywhere, but why do it to residents who are less cognitive. It’s just a low thing to do.”

was discovered and had been lifted for finger-printing.

Police confirmed through their media communications team that they had attended the scene on Monday and that inquiries are ongoing into the matter.

They stated they would like to hear from anyone who may have information about the incident, or may have noticed any suspicious activity around the resthome in recent days.

Terror attack ‘saddening’ A Mid Cantabrian, currently living in New York, has described yesterday morning’s terror attack as deeply saddening.

Eight people were killed in New York City, and 11 people were injured, when a rented ute drove down a bike path along the Hudson River in Manhattan in what authorities say was a lone wolf terror attack.

Methven’s Brooke Sandys, who is studying in New York, was just blocks away from where the incident took place and said that the attack would leave the city on edge, but at the same time also believed it would bring people together.

Sandys was studying at her students’ residence at the time of the attack and became aware of what had happened after following the noise of sirens and helicopter echoes through the streets of Manhattan.

“This type of event really does make you second guess things that we shouldn’t need to worry about,” Sandys said.

NYPD Police Commissioner James O’Neill said the 29-year-old suspect was shot in the stomach by officers after brandishing what appeared to be a pellet gun and paint ball gun and taken into custody.

He said the driver hit a school bus, injuring two children and two adults before getting out.

Statements made by the suspect were “consistent” with a terrorist attack, he said.

Authorities stand near a damaged truck after a motorist drove on to a bike path near the World Trade Centre memorial, striking and killing several people.

A police spokesman earlier posted a photo showing a white ute on the bike path with its front end smashed. The truck had the logo of the Home Depot hardware store chain on its door.

A witness said he saw a white pick-up drive south down the bike path alongside the West Side Highway at full speed and hit several people. The witness, who was identified only as Eugene, said bodies were lying outside Stuyvesant High School, one of the city’s elite public schools.

He also reported hearing about nine or 10 shots.

A video apparently filmed at

the scene and circulated online showed scattered bikes on the bike path and two people lying on the ground.

Uber driver Chen Yi said he saw a truck plough into people on a popular bike path adjacent to the West Side Highway. He said he then heard seven to eight shots and then police pointing a gun at a man kneeling on the pavement.

“I saw a lot of blood over there.

A lot of people on the ground,” Yi said.

His passenger, Dmitry Metlitsky, said he also saw police standing near a man who was on his knees with his hands up, and another man bleeding on the ground nearby. He said the truck had also collided with a small school bus and one other vehicle.

Nearly 250 woodburner consents yet to be processed Ashburton District Council issued 138 consents for woodburners last month and still has another 242 applications to process, following an influx of applications that were lodged before the October 31 low-emission woodburner deadline.

Residents seeking to install a low-emission woodburner in the Ashburton township had until

yesterday to submit their application for a solid fuel heater consent, and the cut-off date has seen a significant increase in the consents issued for 2017 than on the previous year.

“We have been inundated, particularly in the last week with last-minute applications,” building services manager Michael Wong said.

“On Monday and Tuesday alone we received 154 applications. Compared with 2016, where we issued 360 consents between January and October, this year we’ll have issued around 750, which really puts things into perspective.

“We have been kept incredibly busy processing these applications, and we still have plenty to

do in the coming weeks.”

As of yesterday, residents in the Ashburton township who have a woodburner that is more than 15 years old, can only apply to install an ultra-low emission woodburner in their homes, following an Environment Canterbury decision to phase out old style and low emission woodburners in the Ashburton Clear Air Zone.

Those with a consent or who applied for a consent before October 31 will have one year to begin work to install their low emission woodburner, and then another year to complete the work.

Once it is done, Council will inspect the work, and if it meets compliance, a code of compliance certificate will be issued.

Methven children enjoy halloween celebrations

Many Methven householders welcoming trick or treaters on halloween were overwhelmed by high numbers of children and ran out of lollies.

Organiser Clare O’Flanagan said the event, which ran from 5pm to 7pm, went well with more than 100 children enjoying a warm evening and walking door to door to the 24 homes who had signed up.

But by 6.30pm only a few homes still had treats left to give to the diminutive, scary characters, mostly in family groups with their parents.

“Everyone was telling everyone where there were treats left,” O’Flanagan said.

“They are going to double their supply next year.”

She said it had been great to see many homes decorated and providing fun for the children, such as one which made an area of fake spider webs children had to get through to get to the treats.

Winners of the best decorated house trophy were Athol and Sonya McAlpine, who dressed as a witch and scary clown and sat outside their front door.

Fireworks season officially under way

Fireworks season officially launches today and Mid Cantabrians are being urged to think twice before sparking up.

Fireworks hit store shelves today and will be available for purchase until the end of Guy Fawke’s Day on Sunday.

Mid Canterbury Animal Welfare Centre urged people to remember how “cruel” fireworks can be four our four-legged friends.

said people can take steps to help keep their pets calm while fireworks are going off.

“Shut your pets in … definitely don’t leave them running around,” she said.

She recommended that people who don’t have their own pets still keep fireworks away from neighbours who have animals.

“And don’t use the high ones that go up above roofs.”

Fire and Emergency New Zealand advised people to carefully read instructions on their fireworks and use them in wide,

Voter turnout in the September election was up across all age groups compared with 2014, data released by the Electoral Commission shows.

The biggest increase, 6.5 per cent, was in the 18 to 24 age group, probably because young voters were identifying with Jacinda Ardern who campaigned for a “youth wave” at the polls.

The turnout in that age group was 69.3 per cent compared with 62.7 per cent in 2014.

The second highest increase, 5.5 per cent, was in the 25-29 age group.

That was followed by 3.5 per cent for the 30-34 age group.

The older age groups recorded increases of between one and two per cent.

The highest turnout was 88.2 per cent for the 65-69 age group, with voters over 70 just behind on 86.3 per cent.

The turnout of voters who identified themselves as being of Maori descent increased across the Maori and general rolls by 3.5 per cent to reach 71.1 per cent.

The overall turnout as a percentage of enrolled voters was 79.8 per cent in the September election, the highest since 2005 when it was 80.9 per cent.

Rapid rise for Methven speed skier Methven stonemason Tawny Wagstaff is rapidly rising to the top of the speed skiing world and has a world record in his sights.

Susan Sandys reports.

When you are plummeting down a ski slope at more than 160 kilometres per hour, it does not feel like you are going fast.

So says Methven speed skier Tawny Wagstaff, who is in training to beat the world record.

“You don’t feel like you are going fast, because you are only seeing the blur of white underneath you,” the 38-year-old stonemason said.

Wagstaff finished two weeks of post-ski season training on Mt Hutt at the weekend and is now preparing to head off for further training in Vars, France, in January.

He will compete in World Cup races beginning in February, in France, Finland, Canada, Sweden and Andorra.

“The freedom of going as fast as possible, without boundaries or limitations, is seemingly written into my DNA,” he said.

He returned to skiing for fun in winter last year. It was while learning about neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) and considering his life goals at the time, that he became inspired by the potential to take New Zealand speed skiing to the world stage.

“It was like ‘I know what I’ve got to do’,” he said.

Within just a few months he was achieving on the international stage, winning the speed downhill S2 category at the World Cup in March this year, clocking 148km/h.

With one season of S2 racing under his belt, he now qualifies for the main category of S1 racing.

It is the ultimate in speed skiing, where skiers turn themselves into a streamlined missile, with a thick latex suit, leg fairings and an aerodynamic helmet.

At Mt Hutt last month he beat his World Cup winning run, achieving speeds of between 160

to 180km/h on a course off the Platter Splatter run.

His ultimate goal is to break the maximum speed ever reached on skis, of 254km/h, set last year in France by Italian Ivan Origone.

In order to attempt breaking this record, he must be invited to the world’s fastest speed track in France following the World Cup season.

Speed skiing is the fastest of all unmotorised sports on two feet, and also one of the few sports where neither gender nor age effect performance.

Wagstaff has not fallen, however if he does, the equipment of easily-releasing bindings, thick suit and back protector are likely to protect him.

The types of injuries that can be sustained are burning to the extremities from the friction of sliding along the snow, and damage to elbows and dislocated shoulders.

Wagstaff will be travelling with about $20,000 worth of racing equipment, including five new pairs of Atomic 2.38-metre long skis, which arrived last week from Austria.

Each set has a different base grind, making them suitable for different temperatures of snow.

He is likely to go through up to $3000 worth of ski wax for the 2018 World Cup season.

Wagstaff is coached by fellow Methvenite Graeme Goodwin.

He has been helped by sponsor Intercoll, as well as locals, including skidoo drivers, and Ashburton engineer Peter May who has helped him perfect the design of leg fairings, an aerodynamic attachment for the ankle and shin area.

Air friction is the enemy of speed skiing, where the goal is to be as streamlined as possible.

“It’s a sleek and perfected sport,” Wagstaff said.

New exhibition space opens up

Ashburton contemporary artists have hailed the addition of a brand new exhibition space to Dobson Street West.

The Grace Gallery celebrated its official opening on Tuesday night.

It is the only dedicated contemporary art gallery in Mid Canterbury and was founded by local sculptor Brent Holley.

“For the past couple of years I’d been saying to other artists that someone should build a space like this,” he said.

“In the end I had to do it myself.”

The gallery spans a building and an outdoor courtyard on the corner of the New Zealand Bio Grains building, and took Holley “about two-and-a-half months” to renovate and redecorate.

Holley said he likes the old, industrial structures surrounding it.

“There’s not many of them left,” he said.

Pieces currently on exhibition in the gallery include a glass leaf

by Tash Sim, a rotating pumpkin sculpture by Charlie Jaine and paintings by Rhonye Mellroy.

Holley’s own sculptures also feature, including a large winged

chair sculpture in the courtyard, which he said took “endless hours” of work.

“I went through about three grinders with that one,” he said.

The Grace Gallery’s official opening was attended by a number of guests from the Mid Canterbury arts scene.

Holley said he hoped to pro-

mote the space itself to local artists as much as the works inside.

The Grace Gallery will be open to the public from 10am to 2pm every Wednesday to Saturday.

Taylors Stream closed for summer

Taylors Stream rest area remains closed indefinitely one year after a sign went up to keep the public out.

The closure represents a blow to Mid Canterbury foothills outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy visiting the area, off Scenic Route 72 between Methven and Staveley.

Among those disappointed by the ongoing closure is Methven granddad Peter Harper.

“It’s just some people’s little paradise,” he said.

He had taken his children and then grandchildren there over the years, to play and swim in the stream, and picnic under the trees. With a public toilet block on site it had been well used, not only by locals, but also campers.

The rest area is administered by the Ashburton District Council.

Harper said to have it closed for what was coming up two summers was too long, and he was also concerned about tree trimming work planned by the council.

He wanted to ensure any such work did not alter the wilderness character of the area, which was visited by fantails, wood pigeons and other native birds.

Open spaces manager David Askin said the council closed the rest area due to it becoming boggy and vehicles getting stuck. In addi-

tion there were some trees which were dangerous and needed to be either trimmed or removed.

It was still boggy after a wet winter, and work at Taylors Stream was not a top priority, with mowing under way and town reserves

being more important.

“We have to prioritise and sorry that comes down the list,” Askin said.

“I can’t give you a time when it’s going to open, it won’t be before Christmas. It will be when we

have some spare time, that sort of work gets done in the off-season,” he said.

There were other popular rest areas along Scenic Route 72 which people could use, at Bowyers Stream and Mayfield.

Fine weather for annual water games at College

Ashburton College students and staff found reprieve from yesterday’s scorching heat in an annual tradition.

One student and one staff member faced off in a game of chess on the outdoor stage, while the student executive and other staff members replicated their moves as human

chess pieces on the school’s chess board court.

All players were armed with water pistols and buckets of water. As pieces were taken off the board, their corresponding player was dunked and wheeled away in a wheelbarrow.

The annual chess match has been an end-of-year tradition at the college since the 1970s, and is well attended by students of all ages.

Two Australian game-show contestants have blown $A520,000 after getting an extremely simple question about New Zealand wrong.

During Tuesday night’s episode of The Wall, Jess and Lee blew their huge jackpot after falling blank to a question that all Kiwis and most Australians should know.

Their winnings were decimated when they failed to correctly answer: What is the capital city of New Zealand?

To make things a whole lot easier, the host provided multiple choice options of: Auckland, Christchurch, Wellington and Queenstown.

The segment required the couple to be isolated, with Lee in charge of answering, and Jess left to decide whether to double the wager.

Jess couldn’t wipe the grin off her face when she saw the apparently simple question pop up, deciding to double the wager.

Lee appeared confident, saying: “Okay.

The capital city of New Zealand ... this is probably one I should know.”

However, tragedy struck twice.

“I’m leaning towards Christchurch at this stage,” as he mulled over the question.

Knowing Lee was wrong, his wife began to panic and started to scream at the monitor, shouting: “A, [Auckland] darling!”

Lee, who was placed in isolation, locked in Christchurch as his answer, with Jess shouting: “He’s going to kick himself”, seemingly confident in her own decision.

But the pair both walked away red-faced when the host announced the answer was “C – Wellington”.

Their faces dropped in horror as their potential winnings of $520,000 dropped to $0.

However, the couple managed to walk away with $173,000 but will forever rue their missed opportunity.

TranzAlpine celebrates 30 years One of New Zealand’s most scenic train journeys is celebrating 30 years of taking passengers across the country.

KiwiRail’s iconic TranzAlpine train journey has grown from humble beginnings to become one of the country’s most popular attractions with local and overseas tourists, says KiwiRail chief executive Peter Reidy.

“The idea for the TranzAlpine was born more than 30 years ago, after it became clear how much passengers on our Christchurch-to-Greymouth service enjoyed the scenery on their journey,” Reidy said.

In November 1987, the first TranzAlpine Express began running.

Carriages were refurbished, a buffet service and alcove-style seating was introduced, and the viewing experience was enhanced with panoramic windows.

These days, the train has an openair viewing platform and commentary.

The service has become a New Zealand icon that has been named among the world’s top train journeys

by National Geographic and The Travel Luxury Expert.

The TranzAlpine carries around 55,000 passengers a year into Greymouth, and West Coast Tourism estimates that it brings around $15 million per annum to the region.

Large cocaine bust in Tauranga Two Australians, a Croatian and a Serbian have been arrested in what police say is New Zealand’s biggest-ever cocaine seizure.

Police say officers found 46 kilograms of the class-A drug – with a street value of about $20 million – during a search of a Tauranga house yesterday morning.

Police Minister Stuart Nash says the social harm of that much cocaine would be more than $60m.

The haul and arrests come as part of a five-month joint investigation with Customs which was sparked by a probe into smaller methamphetamine busts, police said.

It led them to a cocaine shipment that arrived hidden in a commercial ship that came from Chile on Tuesday.

“The syndicate approached the vessel under the cover of darkness, retrieving the cocaine from a hidden compartment on the exterior of the hull,” police said.

Early yesterday officers raided addresses in Tauranga, Mount Maunganui and residential Auckland.

The two Australian men and the Croatian, in their mid-forties, and a Serbian man – in his thirties – were set to appear in Tauranga District Court yesterday afternoon.

They face charges of importing the cocaine and possessing it for supply.

Police said they had also found another five kilograms of cocaine and methamphetamine at an Onehunga property, along with large amounts of cash.

“Inquiries have linked this to an alleged previous importation which included a further 30kg of cocaine,” police said.

“As a result the two Australian and the Croatian nationals will face additional charges relating to this.”

Police assistant commissioner of investigations Richard Chambers said the seizure was “hugely significant” and was the country’s biggest ever single cocaine haul.

“During the course of the inquiry evidence has also been uncovered of a sophisticated money laundering operation sending hundreds of thousands of dollars out of New Zealand through international criminal money remitters,” he said.

Customs’ Jamie Bamford said New Zealand was being targeted by international crime syndicates as a market for cocaine “Our intelligence suggests an increase in demand and use, and this goes handin-hand with the increase in seizures we’re making at the border,” he said.

Nash praised the police and customs.

“The termination of the operation and the resulting arrest of four foreign nationals shows the power of an all-of-government approach,” he said.

Detainees suffer at Manus Australian immigration minister Peter Dutton has been labelled a “monster” over the closure of the Manus Island detention centre as hundreds of former detainees barricade themselves inside.

Greens senator Nick McKim, who is on Manus Island, said he had seen first-hand the suffering of 600 people and anybody who would deliberately cause such harm “easily qualifies” as a monster.

Dutton attacked Senator McKim for spreading false information and inciting trouble in the tense final hours of the centre’s shutdown.

Acting prime minister Julie Bishop said it made “no sense” for detainees to remain in the centre, but she won’t guarantee their safety if they leave the camp.

“The Papua New Guinea government is a sovereign government and is responsible for law and order and security on their islands in their nation,” Bishop told ABC radio yesterday.

Tweeting Anger after young Russian model dies in China blunder for A Chinese modelling agency that hired a 14-year-old Russian girl is denying media reports that a slave contract contributed to the teen’s sudden death.

The exact circumstances of Vlada Dzyuba’s death last week are still murky, and there are conflicting accounts from Russia and China. But media reports say there are concerns in Russia about working conditions in China for a growing number of young models being recruited to work in the country’s booming fashion industry.

The Siberian Times newspaper, without clearly noting its sources, reported that the girl died after falling into a coma after working a 13-hour day. That would violate a Russian law that says underage models can’t work more than three hours a week.

The paper said Dzyuba’s mother, Oksana, told NTV: “She was calling me, saying, ‘Mama, I am so tired. I so much want to sleep.’ It must have been the very beginning of the illness.” It ran the story under a headline reading “Fears over exploitation of Russian models sent on slave labour contracts without parents to care for them”.

An incomplete hospital record provided by the Chinese agency that hired Dzyuba, ESEE Model, listed multiple causes of death, including sepsis.

Zheng Yi, the founder of ESEE Model, strongly denied reports that Dzyuba was on a slave contract.

Zheng said Dzyuba worked about the same amount of time as other models, usually between two to eight hours a day, and only twice during her 60 days in China did she work 10 hours in a day.

Zheng said she had 16 events, with about 20 days of total work.

Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth have been engaged for a good long while now. A judge on the Great British Bake Off, a widely watched television cooking competition in the UK, has been forced to apologise after revealing the winner hours before the final episode was scheduled to air.

Prue Leith posted the name of the winner on her Twitter feed while travelling in Bhutan, which is six hours ahead of Britain, thinking that fans had already seen the last instalment.

Leith, 77, later tweeted: “I am so sorry to the fans of the show for my mistake this morning. I am in a different time-zone and mortified by my error.”

The Great British Bake Off has a strong hold on the UK public – last year, nine of the country’s top ten TV programmes were episodes of the series, with the finale being watched by nearly 16 million viewers.

Contestants who win the Bake Off often become national celebrities, appearing on other TV shows and at charity events.

Channel 4 scored a coup earlier this year when it bought the rights to Bake Off. The programme is such a hit that the fact the season finale landed on Halloween this year did not daunt TV executives.

Some Britons took to Twitter in anguish over hearing the news of the winner before the show, with one commentator writing that Leith “nailed it” as a clown for Halloween.

The show aired Tuesday night in Britain and the title was won by baker Sophie Faldo.

Stalker arrested A man accused of stalking Kim Kardashian and Ivanka Trump has been arrested after missing a court appearance. The 35-year-old suspect was taken into custody over the weekend after a bench warrant was issued for his arrest when he failed to show up in court for a scheduled hearing.

Upon his arrest, it was discovered he had two other outstanding warrants, including one for “intent to annoy with an electronic device”. His bail was set at over $US26,000. He previously served six months in jail for aggravated harassment against Ivanka Trump.

Leader takes fight to Brussels Facing possible criminal charges at home that could put him behind bars for decades, ousted Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont has taken his bid for independence from Spain to the heart of Europe as he remains in Brussels.

The move can be seen as an attempt to portray his secessionist movement as persecuted underdogs who deserve international backing in their fight against Madrid.

A Spanish judge has ordered Puigdemont and the rest of his ousted Cabinet to appear for questioning later this week as part of a rebellion probe.

Whether they appear or not, the judge is likely to decide as soon as Friday on whether to issue arrest warrants.

Two officials flew back l to Barcelona, where protesters holding Spanish flags insulted them and shouted “Long live Spain.”

In a high-profile appearance before international media in Brussels, Puigdemont kept up his defiant tone against the Spanish government’s relentless efforts to thwart his secession ambitions.

His unannounced trip under-

scored that his path to success is being blocked by the law in Spain, and he conceded ground to the Spanish government by agreeing to take part in an early regional election called for December 21.

Puigdemont said he and the five ousted government col-

leagues who accompanied him to Brussels were seeking “freedom and safety” from the Spanish authorities.

If Spain “can guarantee to all of us, and to me in particular, a just, independent (legal) process, with separation of powers that we have in the majority of European nations - if they guarantee that, we would return immediately,” Puigdemont told a packed news conference at the Brussels Press Club, which is right next to the European Union’s headquarters.

“But we have to continue to work, and that is why we decided ... on this strategy,” he said.

The Spanish government in Madrid has cracked down hard on Puigdemont’s attempt to take Catalonia, a wealthy region of some 7.5 million people that accounts for about one-fifth of the national GDP, out of Spain.

It has accused Puigdemont of flouting the constitution by holding an October 1 independence referendum.

Allegations see House of Cards filming suspended Hollywood’s widening sexual harassment crisis brought forth a second actor’s allegation against Kevin Spacey, halted production on his Netflix series House of Cards and prompted CBS to check into an actress’ claim she was groped by Jeremy Piven.

Mexican actor Robert Cavazos wrote on his Facebook page that he encountered Spacey at the bar of London’s Old Vic Theatre, where Spacey was artistic director, and the actor tried to fondle him against his will.

“It was more common for this guy, when he was in the bar of his theatre, grabbing whoever caught his attention,” Cavazos wrote.

“I didn’t stand for it, but I know some people who were afraid to stop it.”

Cavazos declined an interview request.

The pause in production shadows the fate of the last season.

An actor’s popularity with his cast mates can determine his fate, Brooks said.

“If they like him, if they get along with him, it’s easy enough to say, ‘If I don’t get my career ruined in this, I’ll stick with him,’” he said.

How Spacey’s cast mates are reacting to the allegations remains to be seen. Robin Wright, who stars opposite Spacey as his wife, hasn’t commented publicly, but her Twitter feed includes a number of posts backing social issues including female rights and education.

Netflix and House of Cards producer Media Rights Capital had already decided to end the series at the end of next season, its sixth, but they chose to pause

the production, which is filmed in Baltimore, “to give us time to review the current situation and to address any concerns of our cast and crew.” Spacey was not scheduled to work that day.

The fallout for Spacey also included the loss of an award he was going to get later this month

by The International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.

The group says “it will not honor Kevin Spacey with the 2017 International Emmy Founders Award,” which is to honour “an individual who crosses cultural boundaries to touch humanity.”

Spacey was to get it at a gala in New York City.

A release date for the final House of Cards episodes has yet to be announced. Netflix is developing a possible spinoff of the award-winning drama that helped put the streaming service on the TV series map.

Airborne plague outbreak in Africa prompts warnings Health chiefs are desperately trying to contain a deadly outbreak of airborne plague in Africa that has prompted warnings in nine countries.

More than 1300 cases have now been reported in Madagascar, health chiefs have revealed.

Two thirds of those are suspected to be pneumonic – described as the “deadliest and most rapid form of plague”, World Health Organisation figures show.

The deadly disease is caused by the same bacteria that wiped out at least 50 million people in Europe in the 1300s.

However, the lethal form currently spreading is different to the bubonic strain which was be-

hind history’s Black Death.

Pneumonic can spread through coughing and can kill within 24 hours.

The outbreak is moving quickly, with several British holiday hotspots now deemed at risk of the epidemic spreading.

Mozambique, Tanzania, Kenya, Ethiopia, Comoros and Mauritius are the six other countries to have received the heightened alert.

It has been reported as many as 50 aid workers are believed to have been among the people infected.

The African branch of the WHO states 93 people have lost their lives to the disease so far, lower

than the 124 noted in official UN figures.

A WHO official said: “The risk of the disease spreading is high at national level ... because it is present in several towns and this is just the start of the outbreak.”

However, amid widespread fears it could reach Europe and wreak havoc, the WHO has stressed the overall global risk is considered to be “low”.

The statement questions the UN figures released last week that warned the plague outbreak has infected less than 1200.

Madagascar sees regular outbreaks of the disease, but this one has caused alarm due to how quickly it has spread and a high

number of fatalities.

This outbreak is the first time the disease has affected the Indian Ocean island’s two biggest cities, Antananarivo and Toamasina, officials said.

Around 600 cases are reported each year on the island. But this year’s outbreak is expected to dwarf previous ones as it has struck so early.

International agencies have so far sent more than one million doses of antibiotics to Madagascar. Nearly 20,000 respiratory masks have also been donated.

Outbreaks of plague tend to be seasonal and occur mainly during the rainy season, with around 500 cases reported annually. – NZME

In brief Uluru climb ban mulled Visitors to Uluru may be banned from climbing the landmark rock by traditional owners who are meeting in Darwin.

The Uluru-Kata Tjuta management board will discuss permanently closing the climbing route on Uluru on Wednesday, with figures showing only 16 per cent of visitors made the climb during its open times between 2011 and 2015, The Northern Territory News reports.

The closure is possible under the terms of the Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park Management Plan 2010-2020, if the proportion of climbers falls below 20 per cent, or if the board believes people will continue to visit the sacred site without being able to climb. – AAP

Weight loss wanted One in seven Aussie adults aren’t doing any exercise and almost half are trying to lose weight, a survey by the Heart Foundation and Cancer Council Victoria has found.

The annual survey of more than 2,000 adults aged between 25 and 49 found 43 per cent are trying to lose weight, with one in three overweight or obese people describing themselves as being of average weight. While 14 per cent of adults didn’t do any exercise at all, more than a quarter of those aged in their mid- to late-40s were found to be the most active.

Phone boxes bombed A gang of phone box bombers is using explosives to send the Telstra relics sky-high in Victoria, Australia. Police say vandals have probably used homemade explosives to blow up five telephone boxes and four private letterboxes over the past three months around the Geelong area.

All the explosions have occurred at night or in the early hours of the morning and investigators believe the crooks could be blowing up the boxes with illegal fireworks.

Woman dies after rape A 100-year-old woman has died after being raped by a drunk man in northern India, police say. The crime took place in a village in Uttar Pradesh. “The elderly woman was sleeping on the verandah of her house when she was attacked by the inebriated man. She was taken to hospital where she passed away,” a police officer said.

A suspect in his 20s has been arrested and charged with rape and murder. India has been in the spotlight in recent years over incidents of sexual violence against women.

Maggots in nappy A US couple has been charged with felony child abuse after authorities found seven malnourished and unclean children living in their home, including one 18-month-old baby with maggots in his nappy. Following a welfare check at their home the couple were arrested. EMS were called to the home due to the children’s state. A one-year-old and twin 18-month-old babies were taken from the home to a medical centre, where it was discovered that one of the twins had maggots inside his nappy.

T

oday we welcome Labour List MP, Jo Luxton to the columnist panel for the Ashburton Guardian.

It’s wonderful to be able to provide Jo the space on a fortnightly basis to keep the region up to date with happenings in her life as a Member of Parliament and I’m sure, you, like me, are looking forward to what she has to offer every fortnight.

We are very blessed in this district to now have effectively three MPs at a local level representing the wants and needs of the community.

Jo, alongside Rangitata MP, Andrew Falloon, and Selwyn MP, Amy Adams, puts Mid Canterbury in a very strong position when it comes to our voices being heard and I’m sure each of the three would welcome any thoughts, ideas or issues to be brought to their attention.

We’re not going to get everything we want and need, but through the power of three it would seem we have a much better chance of having our voices heard than we have before.

Our columnists, particularly those of a political nature, are not hamstrung by us in what they write.

Their columns are their own expressions of what they’ve been up to and what issues they feel they are facing at the moment.

Through the Guardian we give them a platform on which they can inform the region of the important things and I have encouraged each to not hold back on anything that might be of concern to them.

We tend not to look at it from a party perspective either.

With the three individuals in Parliament we are merely offering each a space on a fortnightly basis and will continue to do so until they no longer wish to provide the content.

Whether they hail from the National Party, the Labour Party or even New Zealand First, it is their right to have their opinions and thoughts heard and we are more than happy to provide that outlet.

Personally, I look forward to reading each of their columns as we move forward.

New Zealand is in a very interesting position with a new government which holds a very different outlook to anything we have become used to for the past nine years, so what unfolds in the coming months could become some of the most important in our history.

Nicky We had a school disco which allowed the children and parents to get dressed up as they wish and attend a safe activity. They were given a treat when they left. Not into going door to door.

We spend all year teaching children stranger danger and not to take lollies from unknown people then we encourage them to knock on a strangers door and ask for candy we are contradicting ourselves and making it ok because they are dressed up Karen I experience such joy as I wonder around our lovely community where for 1 time a year children can wonder in to their neighbors and recive a treat I felt overwhelmed with the generosity of spirit to see the love shown to my little girl I reckon it’s this kind of community spirit that will bring the change in that we all so desire it’s taken a few years since experiencing hallowe’en in another country and talking to folk how it is the children get such a thrill dressing up we don’t do lollys in general and it’s again a treat especially seeing the lovely bits givin coins bubbles and organic nibbles fruit. And choc we loved it My daughter said in the beginning I’m a bit nervous then I’m excited then I’ve got sore feet from all the long driveways so much fun

seeing beautiful gardens homes and animals. Oh we love it Leanne Dont see why we even celebrate it, not a traditional “NZ” thing to do, also like Samantha’s comment quite contradicting for children’s safety.

Whirlwind ride for new MP

W

hen I was offered the opportunity to write this piece I wondered what I might talk about first.

I decided that I wouldn’t do a piece about any one particular topic, but I wanted to take the opportunity to share my experience as a new MP over the past few weeks.

What a whirlwind it has been.

Life was busy in the build up to the election and election night itself was intense, it was a night of such mixed emotions, nervousness, excitement and elation.

Monday the 25th I was off to Wellington to begin my inductions and what an induction it was, the wind was horrific, the flight was bumpy and the landing was terrifying, something I will get used to, I am told.

Upon exiting the taxi at Parliament, I entered the building and

was promptly seated at a table and then we were into it.

The information came thick and fast, but the people were amazing.

While I felt somewhat overwhelmed by it all, they were patient, understanding and, most importantly, organised.

It was busy like this for the next few days and again into the next week.

It has been lovely to meet and spend time with all the new MPs from all parties.

So New Zealand has a new Government, a Labour-led Government. We will be ambitious and proactive. We have clear commitments to work towards in the first 100 days. As Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said, we will be a Government for all New Zealanders whether you voted for us or not.

I am really looking forward to the challenge ahead as a new MP in Government and so very grateful to all the people who voted for the Labour Party and me.

I have been asked, what it is I want to achieve during my first term? Initially for me, it will be about building relationships with you all and the community.

The community knows best about what is needed for the district, and by community, I mean community groups, businesses,

schools and all the people that make Mid Canterbury the amazing place that it is.

I will be guided by the community in any goals I set, I am but one person and it isn’t up to me alone to say what I think should happen in this electorate, it is about everybody and what the people want to see happen for their electorate.

Distracted drivers need harsher penalties

ere’s a question for you.

Should distracted drivers be treated the same as drunk drivers?

We throw the book at drink drivers, should we also throw the book at those who drive with a device? And I ask this because I was driving this week, and an SUV drove right across the front of me. And if I hadn’t hit the brakes, he would have driven straight into me.

And the driver never saw me – not even after I’d braked – because he was talking on his phone. He was holding it to his ear and his hand and his smartphone had blocked his peripheral vision.

To me, he might as well have been drunk. He posed the same threat to life because if you think about what happens when a driver is drunk, they’re distracted, they don’t react as quickly, they can be unaware of their speed, they fail to indicate or they make poor decisions – and that’s what happens when you’re driving and using a phone too.

The man who drove across the front of me couldn’t have indicated even if he’d wanted to, because he had one hand on his phone on his ear, and the other hand on the wheel.

I’m guilty of using my phone in the car. I often pick it up when I stop at the lights and scroll through emails. Why? I don’t know. Habit, perhaps. But I’m making a conscious effort to break that habit. I have a handsfree in my car and I can button it

Yesterday, even worse, I was driving over the Auckland Harbour Bridge and a Suzuki Swift nipped past me with a young woman at the wheel and she was texting. Texting, speeding and crossing the Harbour Bridge. Just madness.

And that’s why I think you need to increase the penalties for using a device while driving. At the moment, it’s $80 and 20 demerit points. How is that a deterrent?

Make it $500 or $1000 because

if you’re distracted and driving, your vehicle becomes a weapon.

Given our road toll, I wonder just how many accidents are fuelled by drivers distracted by their phones.

In the US, road fatalities had fallen, but now they’re up by 8 per cent and part of the blame has been directed at drivers who are on Facebook, making calls, Snapchatting or taking selfies apparently.

In New York, they’re talking about introducing a textalyser which is a device that police can use on your phone to see if you

were texting or emailing or using social media at the time of the accident. They’d use the textalyser in the same way that they use a breathalyser when they arrive at the scene of an accident.

Smart idea, isn’t it?

As I said, fining people $80 which is what we do at the moment is hardly a deterrent.

Increase the penalty and by a lot – $500 or $1000 – because using your phone while driving, I think, is potentially as life-threatening as driving when you’re drunk.

Early dairy award entrants have chance to win travel prize Time is running out to be in to win a travel prize when you enter the 2018 New Zealand Dairy Industry Awards.

Online entries don’t close until November 30, however those who enter before midnight on November 9 will go into the early bird entry prize draw and be in with a chance to win a share of $9000 in travel vouchers.

Velvet market opens strongly The new deer velvet season has opened strongly, with farmers reporting early enquiry from buyers at prices 10 to 15 per cent above last season’s close.

Deer Industry NZ (DINZ) Asia market manager Rhys Griffiths says the price recovery is timely, given the investment many farmers are making in upgrades to their velveting facilities.

“Regulatory changes in China last season led to a loss of buyer confidence and a dip in prices that did not reflect the steady growth in demand for New Zealand velvet from China and Korea, our major markets,” he said.

“Indeed, overall demand was such that some buyers who held off making their purchases in the belief that prices would fall further, nearly missed out on supply.

Lesson learned, Korean and Chinese companies are now actively buying to ensure they get the velvet they need.”

Griffiths said DINZ estimates production will reach 675 tonnes this season, up slightly on last season.

“This increase will be needed to meet growing demand for velvet as an ingredient in health foods in Korea, which we estimate accounts for 150 tonnes of velvet a year. Health food products are bringing in new consumers, it’s not just a case of velvet consumers moving from a traditional to a more modern form of product.

“The growing consumer demand is also attracting more large manufacturers, all

of whom are seeking New Zealand velvet for new health food products of their own. Some are also using our New Zealand velvet quality mark prominently on their packaging and in mass media advertising.”

He said an important industry goal is to encourage the development of a market for New Zealand velvet-based Healthy Functional Food (HFF) products in China.

“The market has the potential to be huge. Chinese HFF companies are strong and in some cases bigger than their Korean health food counterparts. To date they have held off from developing velvet-based HFFs because of regulatory barriers. These have been largely resolved, so we are very optimistic.”

In the meantime, South Korea remains the dominant market with about 60 per cent of all New Zealand velvet consumed there. Some of this is velvet bought frozen from New Zealand, processed in China and re-exported to Korea.

“As last season’s market dip showed, potential regulatory changes are an everpresent risk for the New Zealand industry,” Griffiths said. “There is also the geopolitical risk. War on the Korean peninsula would clearly have an immediate and significant impact.”

These risks aside, he says the use of velvet in Korea and China is culturally ingrained.

Also the enthusiastic consumer response to new velvet-based products bodes well for future demand.

Beware those waiting to clip the MPI ticket

O

ne of the biggest changes in the wind for farmers following the recent election is the shape and scope of the government department given the task of both guarding and advancing their interests.

The Ministry for Primary Industries, the so-called “super ministry” created by the last government in 2012 to look after agriculture, fisheries and forestry, is on the chopping block, to be replaced by individual ministries for those specific sectors.

On the surface that’s not necessarily a bad thing. After all, those standalone bodies were the way things had been done for many years in some shape or form before MPI came about.

However, there are some unanswered questions, with very little detail available about what happens next.

New Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has said the reason for change was to allow a better focus on each sector, which will enable greater priority to be placed on their individual needs, rather than lumping them all in the same pot.

Incoming Agriculture Minister Damien O’Connor reinforced Ardern’s comments by saying the changes will give greater clarity to the roles and authority around biosecurity and food production, which are critical to the agricultural sector.

Not many farmers would argue with those sentiments, but what is making some nervous is the lack of information about how this will work, will anything be lost on the way and what will it cost?

The biggest concern, at least in the short-term, is how the changeover is managed, and the potential for work in progress to be lost, or somehow end up on the backburner when it should be moving ahead, while new set-ups grapple with their roles.

What is vital here is clear communication between the new ministries, so nothing slips between the gaps. That has to happen from the get-go.

Then of course there is the cost, which O’Connor has said will not be much.

given the lack numbers provided, the potential for doubling up in some roles between the new ministries, and the costs involved in restructuring and rebranding the new entities.

If you want to get a steer on how much that later bill could run to you don’t have to go back very far.

The last government’s rebranding and restructuring of Child, Youth and Family to the Ministry for Vulnerable Children earlier this year cost taxpayers a reported $17.5 million, and the new government has already signalled that is up for change again.

One South Auckland budget adviser described that changeover spend as “an obscenely large amount of money” that would have been better off going towards affirmative action to reduce child poverty and it’s hard to argue with that.

Much of those costs revolved around things like new IT systems, along with consultants and contractors hired to manage the change, and you would have to hope those sorts of things won’t be repeated in a primary industries revamp.

However, one thing you can be sure of in Wellington is that there will be plenty of shiny arses lining up to clip the ticket wherever they can.

So where to from here?

Hard to say, but there will be plenty of us watching on with interest. Manage it well and it could pay off. If not, it will set agriculture back at a time that O’Connor himself acknowledges is looking like a challenging time ahead for farmers, with a shake-up or two yet on the horizon.

CEO pay rises outstrip workers’ Chief executives’ pay is going up almost five times faster than workers’ income, a University of Otago study has found.

The research, by accountancy and finance researcher Helen Roberts, found that half of chief executives earned over $500,000 as the cash component of their annual pay package in 2013 – when the data was collected – compared to just 10 per cent of CEOs in 1997.

“However, cash only presents some of the picture; total compensation and real wealth has more than doubled since this research began, with considerable change recorded in the last decade,” Roberts said.

“In real terms, mean total CEO compensation is up 114 per cent in 17 years while mean real worker income is up 26 per cent, confirming there is a widening gap between the CEO’s income and that of their workers.”

Chief executives were paid 30 to 50 times more than the average wage of about $26 an hour.

“The ever-widening pay ratio is

an international trend – the CEO pay ratio in the United States, for instance, is typically between 300 and 500, but in some cases exceeds 1000 times ... the average wage.”

The longitudinal study was based on financial information gathered from publicly-listed companies.

The study also tracked these companies’ economic performance alongside chief executive remuneration to examine the link between CEO pay and company annual results.

“This clearly demonstrates an overall trend of marked growth over time which is not on the same trajectory as the economic ups and downs of publicly listed companies in New Zealand, nor worker salaries,” Roberts said.

Even during the Global Financial Crisis, chief executive salaries rose.

“It is therefore somewhat misleading to say that CEO salaries are a barometer for the rises and falls in fortune of the business world and of New Zealand’s

A2 Milk Co shares slumped 11 per cent as investors cashed in on a stellar run in the stock which had been up more than 300 per cent this year.

The shares dropped 92 cents to $7.75 as at 2.15pm yesterday having peaked with a record close $8.75 on October 30.

A2 and its supplier Synlait Milk have been breaking new ground since getting Chinese registration for their brands in September, and A2, in particular, has been a favourite among Australian investors for having managed to navigate through the Chinese market in much better shape

than rivals such as Bellamy’s.

Synlait fell 5.6 per cent to $7.75.

“You have to wonder whether this is a one-day wonder,” said Grant Williamson, a director at Hamilton Hindin Greene in Christchurch. “When a stock takes off like A2 it usually registers a correction at some stage.”

The slump in A2 shares drove a 1 per cent slide on the benchmark S&P/NZX50 index to 8064.32, with Australian investors also sour on Fletcher Building, which has downgraded its earnings outlook multiple times after failing to come to grips with the rapid escalation in construction costs.

Fletcher shares dropped 3.8 per cent to $7.08, having slumped 31 per cent so far this year.

“Fletcher selling momentum has been building up following disappointing news,” Williamson said.

Those two companies were weighing down the benchmark index, with 17 stocks up in early afternoon trading, 15 unchanged and 18 down.

Metro Performance Glass, a perennial underperformer in the construction sector, dropped 5.1 per cent to 94 cents, while Air New Zealand fell 2.6 per cent to $3.215.

Pay-equity focus may fuel wage inflation A $2 billion pay equity settlement pushed up wage inflation in the September quarter and pay pressure may continue to accelerate because the new government plans to dump a bill that would have stymied similar deals.

The previous National Partyled government announced a $2.05 billion pay equity pay deal for some 55,000 aged and residential care workers, which took effect on July 1 and contributed to a 0.6 per cent increase in wage inflation in the third quarter and an annual increase of 1.9 per cent, the highest in five years.

The TerraNova pay equity deal for aged care workers was widely praised but was followed by a bill introduced in July that critics charged would make any fu-

ture pay equity deals harder to achieve. Among other things, it stipulated that anyone attempting a pay equity claim would first have to look at their own profession and industry, before making comparisons across industries.

Yesterday the new LabourNew Zealand First coalition said the bill won’t proceed.

“While both sides of the House seemed united in lauding the TerraNova decision in favour of care and support workers, the previous government immediately introduced legislation that fundamentally changed the ability of anyone else to achieve the same result,” Workplace Relations and Safety Minister Iain Lees-Galloway and Women’s Minister Julie Anne Genter said

in a joint statement. “The government will stop progress on the Employment Bill and start work on new legislation that adheres to all the principles of the Joint Working Group on Pay Equity,” said Lees-Galloway.

Extremely tepid wage inflation is one of the factors that has led the Reserve Bank to signal rates will stay at a record low 1.75 per cent until September 2019 at the earliest but economists say the conditions for a shift higher in wage inflation are starting to develop and could lead the RBNZ to lift rates sooner than it is forecasting.

Kiwibank chief economist Zoe Wallis said there is a “sense that wage growth is set to build over coming quarters.”

What to know when you’re buying to let Buying a property is always a big deal, whether you’re planning to live in it yourself or not. Nearly 40 per cent of New Zealand property buyers already own multiple properties, according to recent data from CoreLogic, but that doesn’t make buying one as an investment any less of a bold move.

If you’re thinking about buying an investment property it’s crucial to do all your homework about the ups and downs of both investing in property and becoming a landlord. There’s a lot to take into account, such as the tax implications if the property is re-sold within two years (or five, when the new Government implements its plans). Some councils levy rates differently depending on how a property is used, which can add significantly to your costs, and insuring a tenanted property can cost more because rentals are more subject to damage.

When you’re buying a property that is vacant you are generally entitled to one opportunity to a final inspection of it before settlement (when you pay the balance of the money to the seller and get the keys). This inspection is to make sure that it’s in the same or better order as when you viewed it and agreed to the sale.

If you’re buying a property with sitting tenants this process is more difficult and can raise all sorts of issues.

To make sure you can still conduct a final inspection, we recommend asking your lawyer to ensure there is a ‘final inspection’ clause inserted in the sale and purchase agreement before you sign it. If you’re buying a property by auction, you will have to negotiate this with the seller (through the real estate agent) before the auction takes place. You’ll also have to make this a condition of the sale if buying by tender or deadline sale, if not agreed prior. Your lawyer can help you navigate this process. You may also wish to seek advice about getting a methamphetamine test included as a condition of the sale.

A change of ownership also doesn’t mean you have the immediate right to ask the current tenants to move out. Generally speaking, under the Residential Tenancies Act tenants must be given at least 42 days’ notice to leave a property. If you want the property to be empty when you take ownership, you may need to negotiate a

longer settlement period with the seller to enable this. If you’re taking over the property with the tenants in place for the remainder of their tenancy agreement, the previous owner must let the tenants know that you are the new owner and give you a copy of the existing tenancy agreement.

When you take over ownership, you must tell the tenants your name and contact details, and advise them how their rent is to be paid. If someone else is managing

the property for you, let the tenants know who to contact in case of any issues.

Most tenancies require a bond to be paid as security in case of any damage or unpaid rent. Eight ways to improve the chances of selling your home Here are some helpful hints on improving the chances of successfully selling your home.

1. Get your asking price right This is a tricky market, and putting the right price on your property is vital. Price too high and you risk scaring everyone off; price too low and the buyer will still expect to haggle so you could end up with considerably less than you wanted.

Talk to three realtors before deciding on a price. Be careful not to be flattered or greedy when given unrealistic valuations, make sure you understand how they came to their valuation and check similar size house prices in your area to compare your price too.

2. Choose your realtor carefully Do your research before choosing an agent. It can be tempting to market a property yourself to save cash, but you should consider how big a task you face in the current market.

How will you market your house, do you have the time to show people round, are you a sales person, can you do the negotiating?

Choose a realtor with a good recommendation; ask friends and family about their experiences. Quiz them on how they will market your house, will it be advertised locally, will your house be a “property of the week” in the local paper.

Homeliness also rates highly as it’s very hard to sell a house that looks unloved.

Lighting the fire, clearing away clutter and touching up jaded paintwork can help with this.

Don’t just choose the one charging the lowest commission: it is more important that the service is good and that they sell the property as close to your asking price and timescale as possible.

Good first impressions are vital, before they even enter the house, so clearing the garden, freshening up the exterior are the best places to start and enable the viewer to imagine themselves living there without having to do too much work to make it their own.

From trash to treasure When adding a touch of glam to your home, there are two important tasks that are guaranteed to make your home glow.

Minimalise and makeover.

Thankfully, there is a way you can do both at the same time.

Most of us have cupboards, rooms and garages filled with clutter. Usually we cast an eye over it and pretend it’s not there, and avoid getting rid of it for sentimental reasons. But when the clutter overflows, our homes are filled with a mish-mash of style, from slick and modern, to country and even retro.

These styles are all fine, when only one is represented in a room at a time.

Luckily interior design has matured to incorporate a wide range of style genres. Shabby chic and the industrial look are two styles getting a lot of attention currently, where the focus is on restoring quality pieces from yesteryear. A restoration can add a touch of history into your home, giving a new lease of life to an item once thought of as out of style. This is good news for hoarders, as it’s likely you will have some style gems gathering dust in your garage, just waiting to be discovered.

Children’s rooms Open your mind and tap into your child’s imagination with an injection of colour and playful shapes.

Kimberley Moynihan-Fleming shares how in one afternoon she took an unloved item of furniture, and made it the star of her son’s bedroom.

Take one set of old, slightly tired, unvarnished pine drawers.

Take leftover paint, from a recent kitchen renovation, soft sheen emulsion in Silver Lining and coat drawers twice.

For a burst of colour that a boy will love, highlight the unit itself in Twilight Star, which the neighbours had spare from their own paint project.

•

Finish with a coat of Annie Sloan soft wax.

All the knobs were purchased for less than $20 from a local home improvement store, giving it a playful finish.

For a splash of colour on the walls, you can turn almost any object into a clock. Here a bike wheel has been used, but you could also use a colourful frisbee.

Use parts of old toys to give a piece of furniture a colourful new look. Here skateboards have been used to create a picnic table. If your woodworking skills aren’t that crash hot, then simply take an old children’s table and chairs set. Take two chairs and space apart to put the skateboard on, with a slight overhang on each end. Secure the skateboard to the chairs and you have created a skateboard bench-seat. Attach skateboards to the top of the table, and you have recreated the look simply by attaching skateboards to an old set of table and chairs.

Living room or office Whether your look is industrial, rugged or shabby chic, converting an old wooden ladder into a bookshelf is a quirky, yet ingenious way of adding texture and style into your room.

To continue the trend, use old books to create vintage shelves in a different area of the room.

If your look is industrial, then consider metal brackets for the shelves made from books, (as pictured), teamed up with a metal ladder, preferably looking worn and perhaps a bit rusted.

If your look is vintage, then you could tidy the ladder up a bit, perhaps give it a sand and a coat of varnish, to give it a majestic, antique look.

If your look is shabby chic, then consider painting the ladder in a cream or white, and then age the timber to give it a worn

look, and use the same coloured wooden brackets for your shelving made from books. Choose books to suit your colour trend, such as pale pinks or blues.

Top it off with this dreamy lightshade, made simply from gluing the ends of plastic spoons in an overlapping fashion, over a plastic bottle, or an existing lightshade. Paint the shade whatever colour you desire, from light pink to black.

Just be careful to use a light bulb that emits very little heat.

Outdoors What better way to create the charm and character of an old-fashioned cottage garden, tha n by utilising imperfect antiques into the landscaping.

Is there anything that represents the charm of a country road more than an antique bike? With a coat of paint, and then a little extra elbow grease to distress

the paint, you can turn the old-fashioned set of wheels into a feature of your outdoors. Front and rear baskets can double as additional flower planters, for country aromatics such as rosemary and lavender.

Anything at all can be used as a quirky planter which lend a delightfully eclectic and colourful mood to any garden. From gumboots to an old kitchen colander, old drawers, toys and even vintage musical instruments.

Painted bird cages make for a colourful and effective feature, giving the opportunity for hanging features.

It’s your choice whether you want to go bright and bold, rustic and rugged or soft and charming, but whatever style you choose, there are hundreds of opportunities to incorporate your old trash into funky treasure.

4 medium-sized potatoes 1 red onion, finely chopped 2 cloves garlic, crushed 30g packet burrito spice mix 400g can red kidney beans, drained, rinsed 400g can crushed tomatoes 1C water Salt Pepper 1/2 C sour cream 1/2 C loosely packed fresh coriander leaves Salsa 1 tomato, cut into 1cm pieces 1 avocado, cut into 1cm pieces 2T lime juice 2T olive oil 2t Tabasco sauce 1/4 C coriander leaves, finely chopped

crowave on high for 10 minutes or until tender when pierced with a skewer. Cover to keep warm.

■ Meanwhile, heat oil in a large saucepan on high. Cook onion and garlic, stirring, for 3 minutes or until onion begins to soften.

Stir in spice mix and beans, then tomatoes and water. Bring to the boil. Reduce heat and simmer, uncovered for 10 minutes or until thickened slightly. Season to taste.

■ To make the salsa, combine ingredients in a medium-sized bowl. Season to taste.

■ To serve, cut a cross about 5cm deep, in the top of each potato.

Press on the sides of the potato until the cross opens up to form a cavity.

■ Spoon bean mixture on to each potato. Top with sour cream, salsa and coriander.

■ Tip: If you don’t like too much chilli, start by adding a dash of Tabasco to the salsa, then increase to taste. *Ensure the burrito spice mix is gluten free.

Club news 30 Ashburton Guardian Allenton Bowling Club Well what a busy time it has been for Allenton Bowling Club members.

On Tuesday October 24 we played an “In-House” ladies drawn triples and the winners were W. Watson, J. Mitchell & V. Whinham with 3 wins, 14 ends & 23 points. Runners-up were G. Beckley, A. Reid & B. Officer with 3 wins, 13 ends & 21 points.

On Wednesday October 25 the 1st round of the Ladies mid-week interclub competitions began. Our 5s team had a loss to Redcliffs-Mt. Pleasant but our Rowntree team had a good win beating Barrington/United 25-13.

Saturday 28 Centre Interclub rounds 1 & 2 for men & ladies commenced. The Ladies 2/4’s team beat Beckenham with a combined score of 30-28 and Elmwood 46-23. The men’s 3/4’s team had a win against West Melton with a 61-51 combined score and a loss to Burnside 51-48.

Saturday rollovers are going well under the command of Alison Gibbs, when there is not an in-house tournament going. Watch the main notice board to catch up on coming events. If you don’t get your name down we can’t put you in the draw. The committee can do most things but mind reading is not their forte. You have to do some things yourself.

Ashburton County Lions At the October meeting of Ashburton County Lions, held at the Hotel Ashburton, members were treated to an enlightening and thought provoking talk from Sophie-Claire Violette.

Sophie-Claire came to New Zealand from Mauritius in 2011 and after studying political science at Canterbury University came to settle in Ashburton. She spoke of her work with the Newcomers Network, outlining the challenges many

new migrants face when settling into a new country.

She was also involved in creating the video Crossing the Bridge where a variety of newcomers had the opportunity to share their stories and speak about their own personal experiences of moving to a new country.

Congratulations were expressed to the team that ran the recent Stars in Your Eyes. This was an outstanding success with a sell-out show. Members were thanked for the work they had all done to help the night run so smoothly and to the wider community and participants that made for such a great night which we hope can be repeated in the future.

Planning is well advanced for our next major event, our annual Toot for Tucker to be held on November 27.

This helps replenish the local food banks before Christmas and we again look forward to the great support we always receive from the local community.

The meeting concluded with the drawing of the raffle and some interesting stories told and fines extracted by the tail twisters.

Ashburton Horticultural Society Vice-president Allan Johnstone welcomed 12 members to our October meeting. Patrice Ansell was our guest speaker for the evening. Patrice and her husband Dave recently were on a 12 day tour of Israel and Jordan.

Patrice gave a very informative talk with accompanying slide show on their trip and it was interesting to see photos of many historic sites with significant Biblical meaning.

The Ashburton Dahlia Circle A good attendance for our October meeting, with four new members welcomed and received Dahlia tubers packs. A brief meeting was held and special wishes to members who were unwell.

The main interest of the evening was a practical demonstration of dividing clumps of Dahlia Tubers.

Thanks to Brian and Graham for supplying these to be split up. September to early October is the best time to do this task as the new shoots are growing and easily identified.

Planting Dahlias in full sun, or at least getting 4-5 hours helps to keep the plants strong and prolific flowering from January to May. Explanation of what is a Pot tuber these are grown from the last year’s cuttings and produce a pot bound tuber ready to expand and grow well the following season.

Green plants, are same year rooted cuttings which are now available in Garden Centres. Tubers will form during the growing time but need to keep the flowers reduced to get maximum tuber development for the first year.

Look out for the Dahlias and Plant Stall at the Farmers Market this Saturday November 4.

The Club will have members on hand to assist. New members are very welcome to meet with the Club Secretary Alison to join the group during the morning.

Julian Savea: ‘It’s going to be weird’ You get the sense Julian Savea would rather do his talking on the field. And to be fair, he has done exactly that since being dropped by the All Blacks.

Savea isn’t about to say he is out to prove a point this weekend. But in some ways he already has.

With a strike-rate of 46 tries from 54 tests, it is remarkable a player of Savea’s ability is, for now at least, unwanted in the test arena.

After the plethora of injuries in the outside back this year, the All Blacks selected Matt Duffie and Seta Tamanivalu over the 27-yearold for this northern tour, opening the door for his selection in the Barbarians at Twickenham.

No doubt it will be an odd dynamic for Savea facing the All Blacks, especially with brother and Hurricanes team-mate Ardie potentially in the team.

“The last time I played him would’ve been at home along the carpet,” Savea said. “I’m not expecting any sort of leniency. We’ll

“It’s going to be weird; strange coming up against Ardie. He beat me to play with the Barbarians as well. He was part of this team two years ago so this will be pretty cool.”

Savea has done everything asked

of him by the All Blacks; attempting to evolve his game on the right wing, where he started his career, and helping Wellington earn promotion to the Mitre 10 Cup Premiership along the way.

“I’d love him to make a really big point. He has been, really,” All

Blacks assistant coach Ian Foster said. “Through Mitre 10 Cup he’s really progressed. We know he has done a great job within that Wellington camp and taken the challenge on.

“He’s fit, and in the final looked sharp. The fact that he’s playing well and trending upwards is great news. It’s going to create a little bit of an edge isn’t it? He’s been a big part of us for a long time. I know he’d love to get back, and we’d love to have him back in the form that we know he can be in.”

From the outside, it seems as though provincial success has rejuvenated Savea’s passion for the game. And what better way to show how far he has come in a short space of time than terrorising the All Blacks?

“I believe the door is always going to be there as long as I can play the best I can,” Savea said. “I’m just focused on this week.

“I feel a little bit more confident having a step and fend so I can do a

little bit more.

“As of now I’m loving being home and I’m enjoying my rugby. The offseason is important to me this year and looking to come in fully prepared in terms of my physical shape and my mentality.

“The last two times the Barbarians have played they’ve won. We know it’s a possibility and we’re going out there with the mindset that we can.”

For the next two weeks, with a match to follow against Tonga, Baabaas coach Robbie Deans is clearly welcoming the chance to unleash a highly motivated Savea.

“In the professional game people analyse and find ways to break you down. You’ve got to keep going.

We’re expecting to see a good performance out of Julian at the weekend he’s certainly excited for it,” Deans said. “The great thing is he’s still up for it. A lesser man would’ve said it’s all too hard but he’s still hungry and still wants to be back.”

Back in red and black for 2018

Mid Canterbury’s Tim Perry will once again be wearing the red and black of the Crusaders for the next Super Rugby season.

The prop is currently with the All Blacks on their Northern Tour, and could make his first appearance in the black jersey this weekend against the Barbarians.

Perry first joined the Crusaders in 2014 after a single season with the Blues, and plays his regional rugby with the Tasman Makos.

The former Mid Canterbury Hammer will be joined by two other Makos new to the Crusaders set up, with Ethan Blackadder, son of former Crusaders coach Todd Blackadder joining the squad.

Tasman outside back Will Jordan will also join the squad, while the impressive Canterbury players Billy Harmon, Jack Stratton and Braydon Ennor have all been selected by Scott Robertson to take on their title defence.

The side have also added the experience of former All Black Mike Delaney to the team after an impressive season with the Bay

of Plenty. “I’m really proud of the squad we’ve announced and, as a coaching group, we’re looking forward to seeing what we can achieve with this team,” Robertson said.

“Each of the players we have named brings something different to the mix, but I believe the combination of skills we have here is strong and the character of each of these men will add value to the Crusaders in 2018.”

Kaino ready to emerge from darkest period of his life Thirteen years after debuting for the All Blacks, Jerome Kaino is beginning to emerge from the darkest period of his life in the public glare.

Kaino first appeared for the All Blacks in 2004 against Barbarians at Twickenham. This week, he will face the same opposition, at the same venue, but in very different circumstances.

Back then he was the wide-eyed new kid on the block, whistled up from the Auckland provincial team to score a memorable try after running around Matt Rogers in an All Blacks team captained by now Highlanders coach Aaron Mauger.

Kaino has since featured in 81 tests; played superbly in the vast majority and achieved great feats, including two World Cup crowns,

Jerome Kaino in a distinguished career.

Now, though, the 34-year-old veteran is fighting for his international rugby future.

Kaino hasn’t featured for the

All Blacks in three-and-a-halfmonths, since the British and Irish Lions series, after revelations from Sydney media of an affair with a former Australian model. That swiftly put rugby on the backburner, and saw Kaino fly home in the build-up to the opening Bledisloe Cup test in August.

Kaino has since worked hard to mend bridges, and once he rejoined the team when all parties agreed the timing was right given his all to help develop successors Liam Squire and Vaea Fifita.

But he admits sitting out the last seven tests has been the toughest time in his life as a professional athlete.

“Yeah I’d say so, but the team and coaches have been great in creating a positive distraction away

footy I’ve been focused on. That natural progression to start thinking about the future was always going to happen.

“I wouldn’t say frustrating but I would’ve loved a little more rugby and to be involved more. It is what it is. For me to still be involved and around the group has been encouraging - just to be able to train and be in touch that’s driven me a lot.”

Despite his experience, Kaino has been forced to bide his time and earn his way back.

“We’ve made it tough for him because it hasn’t been easy to get back in but his attitude has been outstanding,” assistant coach Ian Foster said. “He’s got a bounce in his step and he’s pretty keen to play soon.”

A Racing Metro trainer has said that Dan Carter’s future at the Top 14 club is unclear.

The former All Blacks first five-eighth last month revealed a strong desire to bring his family home once his lucrative stint at Racing Metro is complete next year.

Racing Metro co-trainer Laurent Labit has told Le Parisien that Carter’s recent injury woes leave him uncertain to play an extra year.

“He’s thinking right now,” says co-trainer Laurent Labit.

We do not know it yet. He will only do it if he is sure that his body is following. “ Carter joined the Paris-

based club after guiding the All Blacks to successive crowns at the 2015 World Cup on a deal worth over $6 million – a salary that, at the time, made him the world’s highest paid player.

Enjoying instant success, Carter helped Racing claim their first Top 14 title in 26 years, though the club could not pull off the double, losing to Saracens in the European Cup final.

Carter has options once fulfilling his duties in France.

Largely stress-free stints in Japan are favourable stopovers for many top players nearing the end of their respective careers.

In just one example, after playing over 100 games for Toulon, former Wallabies playmaker Matt Giteau joined Suntory this year. Carter may yet follow a similar route.

For now, the 35-year-old only appears clear that he will, one day soon, leave France and return home.

“I’m kind of going through those thoughts at the moment – whether I stay or whether I look at other opportunities,” Carter told Radio Sport’s Martin Devlin last month.

“Home, New Zealand, is where the family is and that’s a big part of my life. My personal family, my two boys and

beautiful wife, they’ve sacrificed a lot coming over to the other side of the world to be with me so it would be nice to return the favour one day and move back to New Zealand so they’re able to spend time with our families; spend time with their cousins and have the same upbringing we did.

“They’re decisions I’m weighing at the moment. I’m not young and single anymore thinking about yourself and where you’re going to be playing next and where next pay cheque will be. You’ve got to start putting your family first and that’s one of my biggest priorities at the moment.”

With less than one month to go, things are gearing up for the next Ruralco Longbeach Coastal Challenge, with one big name already confirmed to be coming back to give it another crack.

The event is set to be held on November 26, and will welcome back Anton Cooper.

Cooper won the Under 23 World Championships in 2015, and a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in 2014, and finished the season ranked sixth in the elite men’s category.

This year, as recognition for Cooper’s achievements, the Coastal Challenge is introducing trophies for an ‘up and coming’ boy and girl cyclist.

“Anton has always said how much he enjoys seeing young cyclists race alongside elite competitors,” committee member Anna Jemmett said.

“And we thought how better to recognise his contribution than with these awards for young mountain bike enthusiasts in his name.”

Cooper has competed at all of the events apart from one, when the event clashed with an international event.

Online entries close for the event on November 13, with all profits split between the Hinds and Districts Lions and Longbeach School.

New Zealand’s women cricketers have prevailed over Pakistan in their first one-day international in Sharjah after the Pakistani chase crumbled at the end, losing their last five wickets for 15 runs. The White Ferns scored 240-9 in their 50 overs, thanks largely to 103 from makeshift opener Sophie Devine. Pakistan’s reply appeared on track and they needed 56 runs off the final 10 overs with six wickets in hand. However, two run outs contributed to the Pakistanis falling short by eight runs. The second of the three ODIs is at the same ground today.

Langman to take year off from netball Laura Langman is taking a year away from netball, having been granted a release from her 2018 contract with the Sunshine Coast Lightning.

A veteran of 141 consecutive Test matches, Langman represented New Zealand from 20052016 but was ineligible for selection this year while playing in Australia.

Now, no side will be able to call on her expertise, with the experienced midcourter sitting out the next season, and returning to New Zealand.

“I have come to the decision that I am going to step away from netball in 2018,” Langman said.

“At this point in time I have nothing concrete planned for next year, but I will put more energy into travel, work and family life at home.

“There were a lot of tears and a lot of thought put into this, but I am happy with my decision.”

With Langman returning to New Zealand, there remains a chance that the 31-year-old could represent the Silver Ferns in the future.

She has represented New Zealand at three Netball World Cups (2007, 2011, 2015) and has not

Michael Torckler will get another shot at winning the Tour of Southland after dominating the gruelling Coronet Peak hill climb yesterday. Twelve months ago the New Plymouth rider won the same 138km stage from Mossburn to Coronet Peak, only to see his ambitions falter the next day on the way to the iconic Bluff Hill finish. Torckler will now look to his Blindz Direct team mates to give him the opportunity to defend a 44sec buffer. “Obviously the tour is not over, and we saw that last year with the lead change pretty much every day,” Torckler said.

Shane van Gisbergen has been doing everything he can to reel this year’s Supercars Championship leaders back in. But unfortunately for him, the quartet ahead of him have pretty fast cars.

A clear championship winner last year, the star Kiwi driver currently sits fifth on the leaderboard with two meets remaining – this weekend’s Auckland Supersprint in Pukekohe and the seasonending event in Newcastle. Yet, as unlikely as he is to overtake Jamie Whincup and company, he heads into his home event with a solid run of form behind him and plenty of belief. Van Gisbergen has earned podium finishes in five of his last 10 races.

Hunt on for fullback

Exciting teenage tennis sensation Canadian Denis Shapovalov has signed on for this summer’s ASB Classic men’s tennis tournament.

The Wallabies are holding auditions for Israel Folau’s vacant fullback position with the successful candidate given the chance to make it his own for the spring tour. With Folau rested from the four-game tour which starts on Saturday against Japan in Yokohama, coach Michael Cheika is considering Karmichael Hunt, Kurtley Beale and Reece Hodge to wear the No.15 jersey. Hunt appears the frontrunner having started at fullback against the Barbarians in Sydney last weekend.

But the Wallabies haven’t ruled out playing him at inside centre and shifting Beale to fullback.

Gombau new coach

Shapovalov signs on for ASB

New Western Sydney Wanderers head coach Joesp Gombau has pledged to play attacking football and build something big at the A-League’s youngest club.

Gombau, who has resigned from his post as coach of Australia’s under-23 team, was yesterday announced as the club’s coach for the next three years. He will take over the running of the team next Tuesday, with caretaker coach Hayden Foxe in charge for Monday’s away game against Melbourne Victory.

The signing of 18-year-old Canadian Denis Shapovalov for this summer’s ASB Classic men’s tennis tournament is the most exciting since a 16-year-old named Rafael Nadal first played in Auckland in 2003.

For years the men’s tournament has had to play second fiddle to the women’s in Auckland where the likes of Serena Williams, Venus Williams, Maria Sharapova and Caroline Wozniacki have appeared.

The men’s tournament attracts a quality field but coming a week before the Australian Open means the sport’s superstars usually skip it, with most opting for practice in Melbourne and a few matches at

the Kooyong Exhibition. Tournament director Karl Budge has tried everything to lure the likes of a Roger Federer or Nadal here, but it’s just not going to happen.

So Budge has turned his attention to the young stars and few, if any, are more talented than the young Canadian.

Shapovalov, who will line up in next week’s inaugural Next Gen ATP Finals in Milan, boasts a powerful serve, an aggressive forehand and great court awareness.

Like Nadal, he’s a lefty and although not as physically imposing as the Spaniard, has all the ingredients to suggest he can get to the top of the sport. Shapovalov’s epic third round win over

Nadal at the Montreal Masters in August was a compelling performance with Shapovalov prevailing 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 to announce himself to the world.

He out-fought arguably the greatest fighter of them all. He had knocked out former US Open champion Juan Martin Del Potro in the previous round and was able to follow up those incredible wins by outlasting Frenchman Adrian Mannarinio to become the youngest Masters 1000 semifinalist. While the success occurred in his native Canada, you don’t beat players of the calibre of Del Potro and Nadal back-to-back unless you are special.

Last year, Shapovalov won

Junior Wimbledon and while junior success doesn’t always translate into the senior ranks, he has shown he’s got what it takes. He backed up his Montreal success by beating Jo-Wilfried Tsonga on his way to the fourth round at the US Open.

Six months ago, aged 17, he was in the news for the wrong reasons; defaulted from a Davis Cup tie against Britain after he slammed a ball in frustration and hit the chair umpire in the eye, an incident that forced him to grow up quickly.

His presence in Auckland over the New Year is a coup for the tournament as Shapovalov will have had offers to go elsewhere.

TNZ boat designer signs with US challenger Former Team New Zealand boat designer Marcelino Botin will work with the New York Yacht Club’s challenge for the America’s Cup in 2021.

Botin Partners Naval Architecture have signed an agreement to design the NYYC entry for the 36th America’s Cup in Auckland, which sees the entries move back to monohulls from catamarans.

Botin joined Team New Zealand as a principal designer in 2004, designing NZL-92 that went onto win the Louis Vuit-

ton Cup in 2007. He stayed on with TNZ until 2011 where he also designed Team New Zealand’s Camper sponsored VOR70 entry in the Volvo Ocean Race.

“Botin Partners has been the premiere monohull designer for the last decade,” said Terry Hutchinson who is CEO and skipper of the NYYC entry.

“We have had a great relationship with the Botin design office through five TP52s, and it just feels like a natural fit.”

Trainer eyes major prizes Stephen Marsh will have representatives in both Group One events at Riccarton later this month.

The Cambridge trainer has the progressive Sumstreetsumwhere on target for the Al Basti Equiworld New Zealand 2000 Guineas (1600m) and Campari and Pierrocity for the gavelhouse.com New Zealand Bloodstock 1000 Guineas (1600m).

“Sumstreetsumwhere has come through his last race in great style,” Marsh said.

At his third start, the Highly Recommended three-yearold won for the second time when successful in the Gr.2 James & Annie Sarten Memorial (1400m).

While he has yet to win on anything better than a Dead 6 track, Marsh is optimistic of Sumstreetsumwhere performing on improved footing.

“He hasn’t struck one on race day, but his gallops at home on better ground have been good,” he said.

Sumstreetsumwhere is currently the joint third fancy at $8 in the Guineas market behind the $4 favourite Embellish.

His female stablemates are also in good heart for the trip south with Campari continuing her strong form without major reward.

Kerr remains optimistic that his horse can run in the first four spots this week, which should be enough to qualify him for the final. “You don’t run times like that on your ear unless you’re very good,” said Kerr.

and looked a beaten horse 200m out and then got going again.”

She is at $10 for the Guineas with Pierrocity at $21 with Prom Queen the hot favourite at $2.40.

“I’ve always rated Pierrocity highly and she’s going to eat up a mile at Riccarton,” Marsh said.

The daughter of Pierro and the multiple Group One winner Dane Ripper was fourth in both her opening two runs before she posted an impressive win over 1600m at Te Rapa.

“She deserves her chance at Riccarton,” Marsh said.

Dominion not an option for Ronald J Connections will resist the temptation to make a late nomination payment for exciting trotter Ronald J to enter the Dominion Handicap in 15 days’ time.

His trainer, Paul Nairn, confirmed the decision yesterday, citing the bigger picture and the horse’s development.

“He’s only a five-year-old and he’s the type of horse that, really, is just coming to it now.

“I think two hard runs in three days would be too much for him and, at this stage, the mobile Free For All on Cup Day will suit him better. He’s a good mobile start

“He had a nice soft run back on the markers and was probably entitled to work home good.

“He went very well, and fair enough, if we had known he was going to develop like this we may have nominated him for the Dominion at the start.

“But we will just stick to the Free For All now.”

Ronald J is actually down to race again at Addington on Friday night, where he will take on Southland mare Dark Horse from the standing start.

“I was never intending to race him twice in a week but he didn’t have a gut-busting run at Kaikoura and wasn’t tired.

“Provided he’s in a good space on race morning he will be ok to go around again.”

Bob Butt stepped in for regular driver Stacey Whatuira at Kaikoura, the latter ineligible to drive in the Group race due to not having driven 15 career winners yet.

Butt retains the drive this week as he will be in the cart in the Group 1 $100,000 New Zealand Trotting Free For All on November 14.

Last-start Group 1 place-getter Regal Love has been retired by connections after going amiss in training. Managing owner Ken Breckon confirmed this week that the four-year-old daughter of Love You would be joining his broodmare band. At her last outing she ran third behind Enghien in the Harness Jewels 3YO Ruby at Ashburton in early June in the hands of co-trainer Natalie Rasmussen. Regal Love is a half-sister to the recently-retired multiple Group 1-winner High Gait and last Friday night’s Alexandra Park winner, Girls On Film.

Combo combine again Ardmore trainer Steve Telfer sent a team to the first Manawatu meeting of the season in Palmerston North on Tuesday and came away with a pair of wins.

Both were driven by junior driver Ben Butcher, with whom he has forged a good association in the early stages of this season. Butcher reined home Ardent Lustre and Delightful Zen to win the last two races on the twilight card. He has now driven six winners for Telfer this season including two behind glamour mare Better B Amazed and last Friday night’s Sires Stakes Series heat with American Brave.

The double was also a stinger for bookies, who took a $5000 bet on Ardent Lustre at $4.50. Sailesh Abernethy also drove a double on the card, picking up wins with Gotta Moment and Contractual Issues.

Van Gisbergen re-signs Shane van Gisbergen will stick with Red Bull Racing until the end of the 2019 Supercars Championship season. The 2016 series champion extending his contract for an extra year on his current deal. “I’m really happy to be staying with the Red Bull Holden Racing Team for another year,” van Gisbergen said. “The first two seasons have been great, especially with the championship win last year. “I definitely feel I’ve come on a lot over the last couple of years and Triple Eight is a great place to be. Knack for hole-in-ones

Some might call it luck, others a fluke, but Mayfield golfer Steve King has developed a knack for picking up hole-in-ones.

While most golfers dream of even writing that number one on the scorecard just once in their playing days, King has done it three times, the most recent two weekends ago.

“It is just a bit of good luck or a bit of fluke really,” he said.

“They aren’t something I aim

for, they just kind of happen.”

King believes he is the first to notch up three hole-in-ones on the course, all coming on different holes.

“It is a nine-hole course, so there are two different teeblocks for each hole,” he said.

This time around it was on the 14th hole, played with a pitching wedge, only needing one bounce to find its way into the hole.

His first hole-in-one was back in 2013 on the fifth hole, and

came as a bit of a shock.

Another King also holds a special spot on the hole-in-one board in the clubhouse, with Steve’s dad being the first to make the magic number on the course.

King’s reaction the third time round was not what you might expect from someone who had hit a major event.

“I said ‘not again’,” he said.

As is customary in golfing circles, anyone who scores a holein-one has to shout a round of

drinks to the clubhouse.

“It has cost me a bit of money over the years,” he said.

Playing off a 14 handicap, King does not put his success down to his skills with his clubs.

“I was playing with better golfers than me at the time and they had never gotten one,” he said. “I am on a 14 handicap at the moment and that has gone out from an eight in about six months, but I’m not too worried.

“It is either luck or good golf, I’m just not sure.”
