The Housing New Zealand property where a young man was murdered in September remains empty pending the results of methamphetamine tests. The property was vacated immediately after Tainui Wano, who was visiting the property, died of stab wounds on September 13. HNZ manager of chemical contamination Charlie Mitchell has confirmed the house at 21 McDonald Street is suspected to have been contaminated with meth. “We are waiting to receive those test

results before a decision is made to either re-let or decontaminate the property,” Mitchell said. If found to be contaminated HNZ will pursue the property’s former tenants for decontamination costs. “We will pursue tenants for all costs associated with this activity and look to suspend them from renting a Housing New Zealand property for the maximum 12-month period,” Mitchell said. The housing agency has copped some flak in recent months for its policy on evictions suspensions with the Ministry of Health issuing repeated warnings that its guidelines applied

only to properties where P had been manufactured and were not intended to monitor homes where the drug had been smoked. More than 122 HNZ tenants have been evicted because trace amounts of meth have been found in the properties they occupied at levels determined by the ministry to pose no health risk, according to State House Action Network (SHAN).

Helping youth with depression and anxiety By SuSan SandyS

Methven residents will learn how to help youth dealing with anxiety and depression at a free workshop in the town tomorrow night. Anxiety and Depression in Youth is being facilitated by Canterbury’s Mental Health Education and Resource Centre (MHERC), organised by Rural Primary Health Organisation and funded by the Ministry of Social Development. It is one of four workshops on the topic, with the others to be held in Ashburton, on November 29, and Leeston and Darfield. Methven youth mentor Juanita Richards said next week’s workshop would help anyone in the community who has contact with young people, and she encouraged as many people as possible to attend. It could include employers, neighbours, teachers and parents, as well as teenagers themselves. She said the workshop was being held at a perfect time of year, as many adolescents approached the school examination period, or dealt with the stresses of leaving school and joining the workforce. “I always see it this time of year around exams, their sleep suffers because they can overthink a lot,” Richards said. Workshop facilitator Dr Chris Taua, based in Christchurch, said adolescents might express symptoms of anxiety and depression differently to adults, such as by withdrawing from friends and family.

Dr Chris Taua Adolescence was however a normal stage to go through. “You are allowed to think in a strange way because this is what is going on in our brain.” And it was normal to feel anxious, as well as sad. “We all have those days, but anxiety and depression as illnesses are not normal. They can be distinct illnesses, but often go hand in hand.” A recent media release on youth suicide rates was “absolutely frightening”, and part of the workshop would be talking about how young people could be resilient and cope with life’s challenges and disappointments. The workshop will be held at the Methven Rugby Clubrooms 6.30pm to 8.30pm, and registrations are at mherc.org.nz The workshops are the first in a series of four mental wellness topics to be addressed in workshops at the four locations over the next 12 months.

Coldstream Rest Home residents were dressed to the nines yesterday to celebrate the Melbourne Cup. Residents wore fancy hats and sat together in the main hall to watch the racing, as well as take part in their own version of the competition. Six wooden horses were lined up at one end of an evenlymarked green mat. Each horse was given a colour, number and name, and residents bet on which one they thought would win. A dice was first rolled to decide which horse would be racing and then the second roll would be for how many moves the horse would make.

They also got to eat their prizewinning relish, which earned a first place and third place ranking and a total of $14 in winnings. Bernice Laird, activities coordinator, said the residents all took part in making the relish, something which has been a tradition at the home for the past eight years. Their tomato relish won first place at last weekend’s Ashburton A&P Show, with a prize of $3 and their pineapple and cucumber relish placed third, winning $1. They were also awarded $10 for the most overall points out of the 13 winners. Laird said the residents’ favourite part of making the relish was how great it made the whole building smell.

There has been a changing of the guard at Sealy Street Medical Practice with two new doctors joining the team. The new doctors have taken over from Dr Murray Wackrow and Dr Megan Grotefend, who left the medical centre recently. Dr Wackrow retired earlier in the year after more than 30 years in medicine. However he has been staying on as a locum while a replacement doctor was found. Dr Rauraidh MacKessack-Leith, from Scotland, arrived in New Zealand last week and started his first day at the practice on October 31. Dr MacKessack-Leith said he finished his post-graduate degree in early August and wanted to get some working experience outside of Scotland. Dr MacKessack-Leith has been busy in the week before starting work at the practice, with a visit to Tekapo and a mountain hike with Dr Mick Tarry. “I went to the Ashburton show on Friday and it reminded me of similar farming shows in Scotland,” he said. Start With a Smile campaign changes Yesterday, Ashburton District Council began removing images of Mid Canterbury rugby player Kolinio Yabia Tamanitoakula from its Start With a Smile campaign. Tamanitoakula had taken part in a photo shoot for the campaign, prior to an alleged incident in Ruatoria, which has led to him being accused of assault with the intent to commit a sexual act. Ashburton Mayor Donna Favel said that although the issue was still before the courts, the council did not want to risk Start With a Smile being associated in any way with violence against women. Start with a Smile campaign was launched last month by the council in conjunction with the district’s Newcomers’ Network as part of the council’s commitment welcoming newcomers to the district. It had been hugely successful, Favel said with large numbers of people using the smile couch at community events and following the campaign on social media. The campaign will end in Ashburton in March 2017 when it will travel to other parts of Canterbury.

The Mid Canterbury Choir has moved its performance of Messiah from St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church to St Stephen’s Anglican Church on Park Street. St Andrew’s parish members have temporarily closed their church so that strengthening work can be undertaken in its organ loft. Choir manager Carol Gun said she was thrilled to have the second venue available, after St Stephens reopened just a few weeks ago after itself having a major overhaul. Messiah will be presented by the choir under the direction of Sylvia Watson, and with guest soloists, on Sunday at 5pm.

Hundreds of trick-or-treaters dressed as ghouls, werewolves, witches and other macabre characters hit Methven streets on Monday night for Halloween. Children went knocking on doors around town, including about 15 homes whose residents had previously signed up to participate and were given an orange balloon to put outside their gate. The list was organised by Michelle Bungard, administrator of the Methven Mt Hutt website. Bungard said she was one of the residents on the list and she almost ran out of her huge stash of lollies. “Everyone was just so polite, and very well mannered. There were hundreds of kids walking around and it was such a beautiful evening as well, a lovely family atmosphere.” The list had been an initiative partly in response to concerns raised around some children being afraid of people in costumes, particularly following the creepy clown craze. Additionally there may be other residents who also did not want children knocking on their doors. A Halloween best-dressed competition was held for the first time by Methven Supervalue, from 5.30pm to 6.30pm.

A 30-year-old man has been admitted to Christchurch Hospital with a gunshot wound. The shooting is thought to have occurred before 5.30am yesterday. A call was made to emergency services from a service station at approximately 5.20am. The victim walked in to the service station after being shot at a nearby address. Police were working with the victim, who was in a stable condition in hospital, to piece together exactly what happened. - NZME

Missing girl concerns Police say they are concerned for a missing 15-year-old girl in Canterbury, who has previously been missing twice before. Aleisha Slack hasn’t been seen since Monday night. Another border loan arrest Another person has been arrested at the New Zealander border because of student loan debt, the Government has revealed. It comes as the Government kicks off a new trans-Tasman initiative which makes it easier to track down borrowers in Australia. Tertiary Education Minister Steven Joyce warned yesterday that 10,000 borrowers in Australia had been identified and could expect a “knock on the door” if they do not take action to pay off their loans. Former students in serious default can now be arrested while trying to leave the country or returning from overseas. New figures showed six warrants for arrest had been issued and three people had been arrested at the border – one more than previously reported. All of those arrested have appeared in court. The total amount of borrowing which in default is now $1.07 billion, of which 90 per cent is owed by people living overseas.

The Australian Tax Office identified a total of 10,400 student loan borrowers living across the ditch – around 10 per cent of the total borrowers living abroad. Joyce advised them to get in touch with the IRD to work out a repayment plan. The joint NZ-Australia agreement was a huge boost in helping tax officials get in touch with borrowers who have been hard to find or were deliberately avoiding repayments, Joyce said. Revenue Minister Michael Woodhouse said that since changes were made to target problematic borrowers, $300 million in debt had been collected. The IRD was reporting a turn-around in attitudes by borrowers who had previously been reluctant to engage, he said. “It seems the message is getting through that if you leave the country for a few years, you can’t leave your student loan behind and hope it just goes away.” – NZME

Ice age elk antlers up for auction Ice age elk antlers discovered in an Irish bog and which have hung in a historic New Zealand hunting lodge for the last century are going under the hammer. The giant ancient fossilised antlers and skull belonged to an Irish elk (Megaloceros giganteus), one of the largest deer species which became extinct about 11,000 years ago, are expected to fetch thousands at auction in Auckland next week. For most of the 20th century, the horns with a span of 3.2m, were hung in the master bedroom of Major Robert Adams Wilson’s private hunting lodge at Himatangi

in the Manawatu-Wanganui region. Wilson was one of the first European settlers to begin grazing stock on the soaring Himatangi sand dunes. On his death in 1964, Wilson gifted the Irish elk antlers to his son Murray. And two years ago, he in turn bequeathed them to Malcolm McIntosh, who is now offering them at Cordy’s auction house in Auckland. “Apart from the fact the elks have been extinct for 11,000 years, they’re really rather impressive,” McIntosh said.

“But they’re so big and we’ve got no room for them in the new house. If I put them above the double bed, the first thing that would happen would be that I’d be thrown out, and they’d be close behind me.” Wilson family provenance says the antlers were found in an Irish bog and later brought out to New Zealand. This pair, or another owned by the Wilson family, were deposited with the Dominion Museum, now Te Papa, according to a letter dated July 15, 1921, that is held in museum archives. In spite of its name, the Irish elk was more deer than elk and was not exclusively Irish, but was in fact found all across Europe, North Africa and Asia. In 2005, Christie’s in London sold a pair of Irish elk antlers for $NZ83,000. Another pair sold for $NZ143,000 in 2003, while the largest known pair sold in Ireland in 2001 $NZ131,000. – NZME

We need to care less about whether our children are academically gifted and more about whether they sit with the lonely kid in the cafeteria.” So said one of those Facebook memes which came up on my news feed yesterday. Some of those memes are trite, some funny, some inspiring. This one would have to be in the latter category and touches on the challenges of the social landscape experienced by our adolescents on a daily basis. As adults we should indeed be encouraging our children not to be influenced by traditional biases which are passed down the generations. It has been said that one of the last frontiers for social stigma is mental illness and this is something being touched upon in workshops coming up in Methven and Ashburton. Methven’s youth mentor is encouraging registrations for Anxiety and Depression in Youth to be held in Methven tomorrow night. The workshop will be held again in Ashburton later this month, and also in Leeston and Darfield. Just why the child referred to in the meme is lonely is left to the imagination, but if they are someone who suffers anxiety or depression or a more serious mental illness, leaving them alone is not the answer. The workshops will help give attendees the tools to pick up on the signs of anxiety and depression in adolescents and ways in which to help these young people. The number of children dealing with anxiety has steadily increased over the past few decades and one in four New Zealanders have suffered anxiety, panic attacks and phobias. Depression is also not uncommon and New Zealand’s youth suicide rates are high. Dealing with such mental health issues head on, without any stigma or blame attached, can ensure they do not spiral out of control. There are useful web links and online resources for young people, just as there are for the adults trying to support them. There are also a range of local representatives young people can go to, such as their school counsellor, youth mentor or GP. The good thing about the workshops to be held in Methven and Ashburton this month, is they will help others in the community to be aware of the signs of these mental health issues and to reach out to the people suffering, rather than ignore them.

What do the emails mean? BY EMMA REYNOLDS Donald Trump has leapt on fresh revelations in Hillary Clinton’s email scandal, doubling down on his claim the drama is “worse than Watergate”. News the FBI is investigating a new set of emails, found on a laptop used by one of the Democratic nominee’s top aides, has thrown a grenade into her camp before the final week of campaigning. With scant detail released on the emails’ significance, political commentators and campaigners are in overdrive speculating on their contents and making wild accusations. Trump’s people say Clinton is unfit to be president. Clinton’s team have turned on Bureau chief James Comey, saying his decision to publicise the discovery without more information so close to the election violates his duty to remain bipartisan. Meanwhile, CNN contributor Donna Brazile resigned after separate emails she sent to Clinton’s chairman were released by Wikileaks, showing she passed the candidate information on questions ahead of a debate and town hall meeting. It’s hardly “cutting through

the noise” of the campaign, something the Democratic candidate had hoped to achieve in the run-up to polling day. Here’s why the emails are important and what they mean in terms of trust for the potential future president. None of the new emails were to or from Clinton, a law enforcement official told Newsweek, and there is no indication she withheld them during the investigation into her use of email as Secretary of State. The FBI found the 650,000 messages on a laptop seized as part of an investigation into disgraced Congressman Anthony Weiner sexting a 15-year-old girl. Weiner is the estranged husband of Clinton’s gatekeeper and “second daughter” Huma Abedin, who apparently used the computer to print out emails for her boss to read. Comey revealed the discovery after the Bureau said in July it had completed its investigation into Clinton’s use of a private server to handle official emails. If any of the documents found on the laptop were classified, Abedin could be judged to have mishandled them, but she will only have committed a crime if it can be shown she in-

ments typically aren’t shared by email but discussed in enclosed areas known as SCIFS (Sensitive Compartmented Information Facilities), sent via courier or through other secure forms of communication. But the scandal still leaves a bad taste in the mouth. Timothy Naftali, founding director of the Richard Nixon Presidential Museum, told the New York Times the State Department under Clinton appeared too well run for incompetence to be the sole reason for the email bungle, and “the public deserves a better explanation.” Clinton had the authority to determine the classification of most of her own communication but not that of the CIA, White House or other agencies who could have emailed her. Instead of allowing State Department archivists to review her email, she kept it all and returned only what her representatives decided was official. Perhaps she didn’t trust civil servants to maintain her privacy, suggests Associate Professor Naftali, but her actions risked the jobs of staff close to her who may have known what she was doing. Five individuals were eventually granted immunity by the Justice Department. - PA

Trump presidency predicted Sometimes The Simpsons seem to hold all the answers. Peer deeply enough into the long odyssey of Homer, say, and a certain warped wisdom can float to the surface. Sixteen years ago, in Bart to the Future, the show predicted a Donald Trump presidency. Lisa becomes the nation’s first “straight female” president, and from the Oval Office, she says, “As you know, we’ve inherited quite a budget crunch from President Trump.”

Too much for the viewers? HBO viewers have seen graphic sex scenes many times before on the network’s shows including Game of Thrones, Rome and True Blood. But none compared to the one that aired on this week’s episode of Westworld. For four minutes, viewers watched as a number of completely nude men and women participated in an orgy together. That scene has some wondering if cable has gone too far.

Couple jailed after baby found with bite-marks A couple who placed their dead 18-week-old baby in front of a gas fire in an attempt to cover their tracks of neglect have been jailed. Daniel Sheard, 24, and Lucy Damen, 22, from Heckmondwike, West Yorkshire, failed to get medical help for Kayleigh Sheard, despite her suffering bruises, bites and numerous fractures to her ribs, shoulder

and arm over one third of her life. Sheard received a six-year sentence after being convicted of child cruelty by a jury at Leeds Crown Court, while Damen was jailed for four-and-ahalf years after earlier pleading guilty to the same charge. During Sheard’s trial, the jury heard that the couple, who were 18 and 20 when their baby

was born in 2013, stopped attending medical appointments after their daughter’s first round of vaccinations. The previous month they had taken Kayleigh to hospital and social services were called when a doctor noticed a bruise, which was later found to be accidental. The court heard that Sheard was afraid of social services’ in-

volvement, with the result that he stopped seeking medical attention for her injuries. The couple found their daughter collapsed in September 2013 and placed the dead child in front of a gas fire, causing her “terrible burns”. Kendall feeling the strain It seems the stress of the jet-set lifestyle is taking a toll on Kendall Jenner. In a new preview of Keeping Up With The Kardashians, she indicates she is suffering from sleep paralysis. “I wake up in the middle of the night and I can’t move,” she said. The episode of the series was filmed in the lead-up to the Milan, Paris and London fashion weeks. She was absent from the catwalk fixture in all three cities.

Xero looks to develop in US Xero is betting on Denver to be the cornerstone of its North American operations as it seeks to develop a core team to service the world’s largest economy. The Wellington-based accounting software developer’s incoming Americas president Keri Gohman will be based in the Colorado state capital when she starts in December as Xero focuses on building out its North American operations. The company currently employs about 100 people in Denver in its sales and customer experience teams, and chief executive Rod Drury expects that will expand to “a few hundred” as he tries to build a mass of people in a more affordable city than San Francisco, where its US leadership team has previously been based. Drury said San Francisco was a “great place to get started” and the first port of call to raise capi-

tal, but as the company moves into an “operational phase” he had to weigh up whether to stay in that city or move. “It’s difficult to grow this business in San Francisco,” Drury said. “This change made sense, so we started looking for a longterm US leader, and finding somebody happy to move to Denver was a key criteria.” Xero will continue to have a presence in the North California city, which will be supported by the Denver base alongside its operations in Austin, Texas, and development teams in Seattle and New York. As a result of the move from San Francisco, existing US head Russ Fujioka elected to leave Xero at the end of the year. The company overhauled its management structure to have country managers report directly to Drury, which he said reflected

that they were developing into sizeable businesses in their own right. The shake-up also disestablished Xero’s chief marketing and revenue officer role, prompting Andy Lark’s exit from the company, while the creation of chief people officer and chief accounting officer roles freed up chief financial officer Sankar Narayan to expand his focus to driving the operation and global revenue. Xero had 62,000 customers in North America as at March 31, and a total of 717,000 global customers. It will update those figures when it reports its first-half earnings later this week. “I’m comfortable with the success we’re having and we’ll talk more about it on Thursday,” Drury said. Xero shares fell 1.9 per cent yesterday to $17.50, having dropped 9.9 percent this year. -NZME

Solid Energy has been looking to sell assets since it was placed into voluntary administration last year, owing 1500 creditors $320 million. New chief executive Tony King said there had been a focus on keeping jobs during the bidding process by selling them as ongoing concerns. “Our expectation is that a good majority of staff will be employed by the new owners,” he said. Sale of Solid Energy assets backed Collapsed state miner Solid Energy’s sale of most of its assets has been welcomed by the E tu union. Union director of industries Ged O’Connell says it’s positive news for jobs and as good an outcome as could be expected. A joint venture between Wellington-based Bathurst Resources and Motueka-headquartered food producer Talley’s Group has agreed to buy the Stockton mine on the West Coast, and Rotowaro and Maramarua mines in Waikato. Solid Energy has also signed deals with privately owned South Island group Greenbriar for the New Vale and Ohai coal mines in

Meridian Energy’s dispute with the Wellington City Council over the rates it pays for its windfarms has gone to the High Court, with the electricity generator-retailer seeking a refund of about $1.2 million in what it claims are excess payments. Meridian sought a judicial review of the rates imposed for its Wellington wind farms in the absence of any other process for appeal, the power generator’s lawyer Adrian Olney told the court yesterday in the first day of the hearing. Meridian had previously challenged the validity of the whole rating scheme, but was now only seeking a ruling on how the scheme was applied, he said. The city council calculates rates depending on whether land is considered ‘base differential’,

Gone are the days when sausages were tasteless, fatty things that were barely edible. Now there’s a sausage for every occasion. And you don’t need to leave them in their skins either. Slip them out, mix the meat with other ingredients, pop it under a pastry or potato lid and it’s quickly transformed into a tasty and economical family dinner.

Crumbed sausage pie 2 sheets frozen flaky pastry, defrosted 1 potato, peeled and grated 450g meat from your favourite sausages 1 onion, peeled and diced 1 carrot, peeled and grated 1 apple, peeled and grated 1/2 C fresh breadcrumbs 1 egg 1/4 C tomato sauce

Sausage pie 400g puff pastry 2T oil 1 onion, chopped finely 2 cloves garlic, crushed 2 celery stalks, sliced thinly 1/2 t mixed herbs 500g meat from your favourite sausages 1T Worcestershire sauce 2t salt 1/2 C chutney 2T chopped parsley 1 egg, lightly beaten for glazing ■ Preheat an oven to 180°C. Grease and flour a 20cm x 20cm square tin. ■ Roll three quarters of the pastry on a lightly-floured bench to fit the base and sides of your tin. ■ Roll remainder to fit over top of pie tin. ■ Heat oil in a frying pan. ■ Add onion, garlic and celery, cooking for four or five minutes until the celery is soft. ■ Place onion mix in a large bowl with herbs, sausagemeat, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, chutney and parsley. ■ Combine well using your hands. ■ Place mixture into pie tin, spreading evenly and smoothing the

top. ■ Place pastry over the top. Dampen and press the edges together. Brush top with the egg. ■ Bake for 50 minutes until the pastry is golden and the pie cooked. ■ Allow to sit for at least 30 minutes before serving.

Sausage, egg and bacon pie 3 (240g) rindless bacon rashers, halved 2 thick (300g) sausages 3 sheets shortcrust pastry 1C (260g) bottled tomato pasta sauce 6 eggs 2 green onions, sliced thinly

■ Cook bacon in a large frying pan until browned and crisp; drain on absorbent paper. ■ Cook sausages in same pan until browned all over and cooked through; cool. ■ Slice sausages thinly. ■ Cut two 13cm rounds from each pastry sheet; press rounds into pan holes. ■ Prick bases with fork. Lay bacon over base and side of pastry. ■ Top with sausage; pour over pasta sauce. Bake 10 minutes. ■ Using a spoon, make an indent in sauce. ■ Crack an egg carefully into each pie; bake about 15 minutes or until egg is set. ■ Serve sprinkled with onion.

Topping 1/2 C fresh breadcrumbs 1/4 C chopped fresh parsley 1/2 C grated cheddar cheese ■ Preheat the oven to 180°C fan bake or 200°C conventional. ■ Grease a 22cm pie or flan tin. ■ Roll the pastry sheets together and cut to line base and sides of prepared tin. ■ Squeeze the potato in a clean tea towel to remove any excess moisture. ■ Mix together potato, sausage meat, onion, carrot, apple, breadcrumbs, egg, tomato sauce and parsley. Season. ■ Spoon sausage mix into the pastry-lined tin and spread evenly with a spatula. ■ To make topping: Mix breadcrumbs, cheese and parsley together and sprinkle over the pie top. ■ Bake in the preheated oven for 40-45 minutes until filling is cooked and topping is golden.

It was word of mouth that led to Mark Breach putting his hand up for the December Fight Night in Methven. The Dubliner Fight Night has attracted a wide range of Methven people to raise money for charity. Breach said he decided to have

a crack at boxing after he heard the organisers were looking for volunteers for the Methven fundraiser. For the past several weeks he has been training alongside the other fighters ahead of the December 10 event. The contenders, of which none have ever boxed before, are being trained by Dubliner owner Gary

Manning and chef Joe Keepa. Breach said it wasn’t until he actually started regularly training that he realised just how much work went into boxing. He said the sweet science was both mentally and physically taxing. The mid-40s fighter said he was feeling calm about the fight at the moment, but insisted

there would definitely be nerves on the night. The fight is being hosted at the Methven Heritage Centre and the $50 tickets that went on sale on the 27th have already sold out. Proceeds are going towards a lighting upgrade for the Methven Rugby Club, as well as a donation to St John Ambulance Services.

Pep Guardiola is approaching Manchester City’s clash with Barcelona this week like a final – but accepts they need to be brilliant to win. Bale’s new salary puts him in megastar class By Chris CutmorE Gareth Bale won’t be worrying about turning the heating on this winter after securing an eye-watering new contract with Real Madrid worth £346,000 (NZ$519,000) per week. Yet the Welshman still does not top football’s rich list despite putting pen to paper on a deal that will net him £108 million (NZ$185m) over the next six years. That honour remains held jointly by the inseparable superstars who have propelled the game – and its financial rewards – to dizzy new heights over the past decade, Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. The pair take home a barely believable £365,000 per week (NZ$623,000) – that’s £19m (NZ$32m) each and every year – AFTER tax.

Bale will earn $NZ54 a minute. Gareth Bale’s $185m, six-year deal means he will earn $3509 an hour and $54 per minute. His £108m is 2.4 times the total cost of Burnley’s Premier League squad (£45.7m). With his new deal Bale could afford to buy 650,602 Real Madrid season tickets – costing £166 each – enough to sell out the Bernabeu seven times over. He could also buy 1.2m Real Madrid shirts complete with his name and number. The deal is a 430 per cent pay rise on the £80,000 per week he earned at Tottenham. Real Madrid and Barcelona pay their prized assets a net wage after the Spanish tax man has taken his share, meaning that the duo’s lead over their rivals in the footballers’ rich list is even

bigger than it at first appears. If the Real and Barca players’ salaries are judged like their counterparts from the Premier League – i.e. before tax is paid on their wages – Bale’s new contract would be worth a simply staggering amount. Given the Spanish income tax rate applicable to the players is 45 per cent, that would put the figure Real are paying for Bale at £32.7m per year – or £629,000 per week. Using the same extrapolation, the clubs are each forking out £664,000 per week for Ronaldo and Messi – £34.5m per year. Real remain insistent, however, that the gross figure on Bale’s contract remains around £18m, although Sportsmail understands that the figure is far higher given the sum due to the tax man.

Adams rockets to the top Steven Adams hasn’t just vaulted to the top of the New Zealand sport’s rich list – he’s gone to a whole new stratosphere. Confirmation that the Oklahoma City Thunder has completed a new $NZ140 million four-year contract with the Kiwi NBA star means Adams has created a staggering new benchmark for the highest paid New Zealand athlete in our history. Worth $NZ35 million a year once his new contract kicks into place in about 10 months once his initial four-year rookie contract expires in 2017, Adams has more than doubled the previous highest mark set by sailor Sir Russell Coutts. Coutts was king of the Kiwi sporting castle with an estimated earning power of $13 million a year via his status as head of America’s Cup holders Oracle. But Adams will soar past him – and then some. His is currently on a $2.8m a season deal, and was ranked No. 4 on the NZ Herald’s “Rich List” revealed in October last year. Adams’ new wage does not include any potential endorsements. He is already on Powerade’s books. His endorsement opportunities are expected to soar with his new-found status. Coutts and others are staring at a huge gap between the former Scots College student and themselves now when it comes to sports’s rich list in New Zealand. Kahu lucky to be there In many ways, Kiwis fullback Jordan Kahu is lucky to be playing league. Leuluai fit to play Kiwis five eight Thomas Leuluai will be available for this week’s game against the Kangaroos, after passing all necessary tests. Leuluai left the field in the 52nd minute of the Kiwis 17-16 win over England after copping a heavy head knock. Training ground ‘nirvana’ for the Kiwis By Michael Burgess In terms of facilities, the Kiwis will experience training ground nirvana in Manchester today. League usually lags behind football, cricket and rugby in this country, but today the Kiwis will have a taste of the high life. David Kidwell’s team will have a training session at the Etihad Campus complex, the exclusive facilities of the Manchester City football club. Since the Lancashire team was taken over by Dubai based investors in 2008, it has been one of the richest on the planet. The Abu Dhabi United Group have pumped hundreds of millions into the Premier League club, and the Etihad Campus complex is an example of their ambition. Modelled on the academies of the likes of Barcelona and Ajax, it is built on 80 acres of former industrial and disused land adjacent to the Etihad Stadium. The extraordinary facility, which cost an estimated GBP 200 million ($340 million), features 17 pitches including four that can be tailored to replicate various fields across the

Premier League. There are also three gyms, and six pools of various sizes, including hot and cold plunge pools to aid injury recovery. It’s an incredible facility – but Manchester City don’t lack ambition. They’ve won the league title twice in the last five years, and boast some of the most expensive players in the world. Manchester City also have one of the most famous coaches in the world, former Barcelona and Bayern Munich mentor Pep Guardiola. Their team won’t be training today – they have a home Champions League match against Barcelona – but there may be some players present doing rehabilitation sessions. And the first team squad could also be around against of the huge clash with Lionel Messi and company, as the Manchester City team stay at the on-site four star hotel the night before home games. The Kiwis will have an additional session at the Etihad campus tomorrow before travelling to Birmingham where they will be based ahead of the match in Coventry against the Kangaroos on Sunday. - NZME

Red Bull team principal Christian Horner has heaped pressure on Formula One’s governing body to sanction Sebastian Vettel for his expletive-laden outburst during the Mexican Grand Prix. The Ferrari driver told race director Charlie Whiting to “f*** off” over the team radio as he lost his cool while fighting Red Bull’s Max Verstappen for position in the closing stages. Vettel apologised to Whiting fafter the race, but Horner believes the FIA should take action against his former driver. - PA

Irish know how to win

There is a concept in Japan known as shokunin. Literally translated it means artisan, but that doesn’t really get across the full meaning. Shokunin is the search for perfection – a dedication to mastering a craft by repeating the same things for life. The All Blacks are essentially trying to bestow upon themselves shokunin status. Their performance culture is all about continual improvement sought through endless hours of doing the same thing. This is why nothing ever really changes for them regardless of where they are in the world. Their success is built on routine – their whole mind-set driven by the need to repeat the basic elements of their individual skills and collective gameplan. Being in Chicago changes nothing in that respect. The city is abuzz with World Series fever and the streets were filling with Bears and Minnesota Vikings jersies ahead of the Monday Night Football clash at Soldier Field, but it’s background noise for the All Blacks. The All Blacks are here to do one job – and that is to play Ireland and try to push their winning run to 19 tests.

Jerome Kaino: Young players will take time to absorb the simplicity yet enormity of the philosophy. Nothing will distract them from that. The build-up to this test will be the same as any other. They will work their way through the days like they always do, hoping that come Saturday they will have set themselves up to perform the way they want. “It was good to get over early and we have had some coaching clinics and some time with the fans and a bit of fun at the Bulls

game, but we have put a fullstop to all that,” says Jerome Kaino. “You have got to keep things the same with how you prepare for test matches and we have a routine that we want to progress through the week and it doesn’t really matter that it is towards the end of our season. “We have got a few good tests coming up and how we prepare doesn’t really differ.” This is the message that the

senior players are drumming into the contingent of youngsters on tour – to understand that repetition has been the key factor in the 18 consecutive wins the All Blacks have enjoyed since August last year. Those games have taken the All Blacks all over the world. It has seen them play in London, Newcastle, Durban, Sydney, Buenos Aires and Cardiff and not once have they lost sight of what they must do to get the result they were after. It is not an easy art to master and younger players with limited or no exposure to test rugby will take time to absorb the simplicity yet enormity of the philosophy. “I think the coaches have in place for how they want to develop the [young] guys,” says Kaino. “But for us who have been here for a while, it is just a matter for us to do what we do on a day-today basis here in All Black life. “It is then up to those younger guys to watch and learn or to even ask questions. “That is how they learn. “It is a bit of a daunting time for them especially if it is your first tour, to be in this environment and we can make it as comfortable for them. “They have got to try to learn on the hop.” - NZME

Dream big, Cheika tells touring Wallabies The Wallabies have been urged to dream big by coach Michael Cheika as they chase a challenging grand slam quest in a bid to end a horror year on a high. But the measured mentor stopped short of completely endorsing the bold claim from five-eighth Bernard Foley that the Wallabies can win their first grand slam since 1984. Foley made the call in the wake of last week’s tough loss in the third Bledisloe Cup Test of the year, which consigned Cheika’s men to a clean sweep at the hands of the All Blacks in 2016 and their seventh loss of a difficult year. But a successful European Tour would go a long way towards winning back an Australian public becoming increasingly jaded with the dipping results from the national team. We know all about Munster’s famous 12-0 victory over the All Blacks in 1978. But you may have forgotten that the Black Ferns were tipped over 17-14 by Ireland in the 2014 Women’s Rugby World Cup. Or, even more recently, that the New Zealand Under 20s were beaten 33-24 by their Irish counterparts in June’s Junior World Championship. Those latter two games represent the only occasions an Irish national rugby team have lowered New Zealand. Both defeats ranked as huge upsets, which is why the All Blacks will be on high alert to ensure their preparation for this Sunday’s test in Chicago against Joe Schmidt’s men is ‘bone-deep,’ as Steve Hansen likes to call it. Ireland have never beaten the All Blacks, but there have been close shaves down the years. In 1963 it was 6-5, in 1973 it was 10-all, in 1978 the Grand Slammers needed a late Andy Dalton try to take the chocolates, in 1992 the All Blacks laboured to a 2421 win in Dunedin, and in 2002 Ireland would have won on a bitterly cold night at Carisbrook if David Humphreys had been in the starting 15 ahead of Ronan O’Gara. In 2012, it needed a late, and rare, Dan Carter pot for the All Blacks to triumph in Christchurch. If Johnny Sexton’s mental strength had not failed him in the clutch with a makeable penalty goal, the 2013 Ireland side would surely have won an historic victory in Dublin. As it was, Ryan Crotty’s last gasp try well into overtime snatched the result. Hansen may have seen the replay of the Under 20s’ defeat to Ireland. If he has, he will know that a committed, physical and accurate side got in New Zealand’s faces, tackled like demons, and played the right tactics. New Zealand, conversely, were out-thought, playing dry weather in the light rain and having a seemingly unshakeable belief that moving the ball with width, to where their strength lay, was going to win the day. That blinkered approach was costly, even though they scored four tries to three. It is no use saying that they would have won by plenty on a dry day. Rugby calls for different approaches when the conditions dictate. Look at the All Blacks against Llanelli in 1989, where it was ball up the jumper stuff in a howling gale, or the 1983 test against the Lions at Athletic Park, where Dave Loveridge took the game by the scruff of the neck as the Wellington southerly rocked the Millard Stand. The most talented side does not always win, but the smarter side invariably does. All Blacks, beware. - NZME

Fifth cup for Williams Lloyd Williams has become the most successful owner of Melbourne Cup winners with Almandin claiming Australia’s greatest horse race yesterday. Almandin overcame a potent international challenge to beat the Irish stayer Heartbreak City with Hartnell taking the minor placing. One of Australia’s most successful businessmen, Williams has now figured in the ownership of five Melbourne Cup winners while jockey Kerrin McEvoy has ridden his second winner of the race. Almandin started a well-supported $11 chance and sat midfield before joining a charge of horses at the home. Hartnell surged to the front only to be challenged by Almandin with Heartbreak City making his run between the pair. Heartbreak City ($19) went clear and seemed certain to hold on before Almandin raised one more effort to claim victory on the line by a long head. Hartnell, the $5.50 favourite, couldn’t match the quinella pair but ran bravely to finish third, 4-1/4 lengths further back. McEvoy, who won the 2000 Cup as an apprentice on Brew, said Almandin was always travelling like a winner.

The jockey paid tribute to Williams and his team, headed by trainer Robert Hickmott. “Lloyd, he knows what to do in these staying races. It’s just a dream. It’s great to be part of it again for my second Cup,” McEvoy said. After Hartnell, Qewy was next best of the Godolphin runners in claiming fourth with Who Shot Thebarman winding up from a long way back for fifth. Rank outsider Rose Of Virginia was last of the 24 runners. Williams won his first Melbourne Cup when Just A Dash saluted in 1981 but says this year’s triumph means more than most. He said it was his first day at a Melbourne Cup for 20 years and he hadn’t been trackside to watch one of his horses win since What A Nuisance scored in 1985. “This horse (Almandin) had a tendon and he was broken down so I’m quite emotional about this one,” he said. “The boys at Macedon (Lodge) have done a fabulous job getting this horse back.” Jameka, the only Australian-bred horse in the race, failed in her bid to complete the Caulfield Cup-Melbourne Cup double. Maybe there is a resistance to the All Stars New Zealand Trotting Cup stranglehold after all. Just when it looked like there was no one capable of stopping the onslaught of Lazarus, Have Faith In Me and Smolda in next Tuesday’s feature, Franco Nelson went next level on it and announced himself as more than just an outside chance of upsetting the blue and silver army in seven days time. His victory seaside at Kaikoura on Monday was nothing but encouraging with a view next week and was a continuation of the wonderful built up he’s been given by his trainer Robert Dunn and his son, John. And the best part of all? Neither Johnny nor Franco Nelson were supposed to be there yesterday. The Kaikoura Cup was never seriously on the radar until a couple of weeks ago for Franco Nelson, but a late change in plans saw him head to South Bay while Dunn was laid up on Saturday and looking very unlikely to drive. “I did something to my back up in Auckland on Friday night and it was pretty sore,” Dunn said. “Luckily I had a bit of help from Kayla Marshall and Chris McGregor who did plenty of work on me on Saturday to try and get me right.” If there was still any discomfort, Dunn didn’t show it and when Franco Nelson put a couple of lengths on Smolda at the top of the straight, he would have been lucky to feel anything at all. “That was super, he just loved being out there and rolling along, he’s really in the zone. “I’ve got to give a lot of credit to the team at home for the way his going, especially Mitchell Kerr who has down a power of work with him. “We’re lucky to have good staff.” With his usual exemplary stand start manners Franco Nelson was able to find the front from his outside barrier draw and with a solid tempo being set by Dunn he ran his rivals into the dirt in a very slick 2:55.6 - just 0.1 seconds outside Sushi Sushi’s race record. Smolda was brave, albeit a little below his best, and will improve immensely after missing some work due to his irregular bloods following his Methven win. Mossdale Conner was again solid, without being brilliant in fourth after securing a great trip in the trail throughout. All still isn’t well in the Tiger Tara camp either. He was beyond disappointing after being slow away and his performance left Gerard O’Reilly and Geoff Dunn shaking their heads. Australian raider Messini was also on the disappointing list, leaving trainer Brent Lilley with a few issues to iron out in the next seven days. - HRNZ

Future plans uncertain Christopher Dell (right) has made a winning start to his career as a senior jockey in New Zealand with his tenure here to depend on his future success. The 24-year-old was successful aboard the Janelle Millar-trained Effectav at Awapuni last weekend in his first day back riding here after an enjoyable stint in Queensland. “I rode my last winner Tequila Sunrise for Janelle at New Plymouth before I went to Australia and we’ve kept in touch ever since,” he said. Dell won 96 races, including two at black-type level, before he left in March to continue his apprenticeship with Eagle Farm trainer David Murphy. “I’m not sure how long I’ll be back for at this stage. “If I can get on a roll then I’d obviously stay,” he said. “I’ve been a senior since I came out of my time in August and I started off well until I got a 12-day suspension and that sat me back a bit. “It’s hard to make a living when you’re only getting three or four rides a week so I decided to come home to freshen up. “I would like to go back to Queensland at some stage, it’s a lovely place.” In the meantime, Dell will ride last-start placegetter Freewheeler for his father Kevin in the AJC Members’ 2000 at Avondale today. “He stepped up to 2100 metres and showed his ability, but he’s got more tricks than a joker,” he said. “Knowing him like I do after riding him all the time earlier on will help a huge amount.” - NZME

Sport Four-day tests? Former Australian captain Mark Taylor has called for the introduction of four-day Tests to bring fans back to cricket’s longer forms. The idea of four-day Tests is not new - the concept was first floated with the International Cricket Council in 2003. Taylor, a Cricket Australia board member, sees a scheduling benefit too, with the matches beginning on Thursdays for games to build to a Sunday evening climax – much like golf tournaments. “It’ll only add to the appeal of the game, make it a bit shorter and a bit faster. That’s what people of this generation want to see.”

A former New Zealand title holder was in Ashburton on Monday to see how the Mid Canterbury Boxing Academy was progressing. The prolific New Zealand boxer and founder of the Wellington based Naenae Boxing Academy Billy Graham was pleased with how the boxing gym was being run and the values that were

being taught to the kids. The Mid Canterbury Boxing Academy was established earlier this year by Cornelius Grobler and has around 80 members across its ranks. Grobler said he created the club and formed its ethos to mirror Naenae’s. The 31-year-old said it was because boxing and Graham’s style of coaching was crucial to helping Grobler escape the

rough South African neighbourhood he grew up in. The Mid Canterbury gym teaches the youngsters not just to fight, but to honour values of responsibility, compassion, consideration, duty, obedience and honesty, all traits Graham instils in his students. Graham said the gym was the only one like it in the South Island and he would do anything he could to support Grobler and

the staff around him who were doing a brilliant job. He said the boxing gym was crucial to the community as it helped kids from different backgrounds come together and respect one another. Graham’s gym is famous for “making champion men” and he wanted to replicate it, Grobler said. “We teach the kids about being successful.”
