The sun came out and so did the crowds to see all that was on offer at this year’s Ashburton A&P Show. Gates opened on the 138th annual show on Friday morning and shut on a very successful two days on Saturday evening. Show president Lynette Lovett said gate takings were up across both days, and the hard-working committee was extremely happy with the way the event had unfolded. While entries in the cattle section were disappointing, equestrian entries were well up on previous shows. Entries in the home industries pavilion were also solid. “It’s swings and roundabouts, but on the whole it was a very successful show, we’ve had lots of great comments on Fa-
cebook,” Mrs Lovett said. Many early childhood centres and kindergartens took advantage of a quieter day on Friday to bring their preschoolaged charges for a tour. A stream of artists and performances on the entertainment stage kept the crowds amused, with Mid Canterbury’s Cook Island and Filipino communities both showing off their cultures. Groundskeeper Shayne Adams’ hard work paid off with the well-watered grounds providing a superior surface able to hold up for two days of equestrian competitions. Trade exhibits were also up this year, and the new grounds layout was a hit with exhibitors, who reported a quiet day on Friday but a steady stream of traffic on Saturday. Carrfields Ltd took the cup for the best large trade exhibit and Ashburton Kin-
dergartens’ the small exhibition award. “We’ve already taken bookings for trades sites for next year,” Mrs Lovett said. “The grand parade was one of the better ones – we had really good participation, with the vintage cars and machinery following the exhibitors then the car club.” Over in sideshow alley youngsters of all ages were entertained, while many retired farmers veered off to watch the dog trials at the western end of the grounds. Mrs Lovett now hands over the presidential reins to Chris Watson, who will lead the show committee for the next two years.
