The Ashburton District Council is fighting a losing battle to have Thompsons Track reclassified as a state highway despite huge increases in traffic. Pressure from heavy vehicles and recent wet weather has created dangerous potholes on a number of roads around the district, including Thompsons Track. Data released by the council yesterday shows heavy commercial vehicle use on the road is the highest compared to other rural roads in the district, at 214 vehicles per day, measured at a point

near the Tramway Road intersection. This represents a 166 per cent increase since 2008. Heavy vehicle use on other rural roads has also increased, up to over four times, and average daily traffic has followed suit, with some roads carrying more than 1000 vehicles per day (see table on www.guardianonline.co.nz). Council service and delivery chairman Stuart Wilson said NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) visited and analysed a council request to have Thompsons Track upgraded to a highway two years ago, but the agency declined as it did not consider traffic use was high enough.
The council would once again make the request when it met with NZTA later this month. NZTA fully funds state highways, such as State Highway 1 and State Highway 77 in Mid Canterbury, for their repairs, maintenance and upgrades. Mid Canterbury’s other roads are the responsibility of the council, but up to a certain level receive 51 per cent funding from NZTA under a national formula.
