Pool cooling in pipeline

Closed days could be a thing of the past next year when new cooling units are installed in the EA Networks Centre.

For the past two summers, centre staff have fielded complaints from irate pool users on hot days.

On one occasion this year staff were forced to close the pool and

on about 27 others the temperature in the pool complex breached comfort levels.

At the Ashburton District Council’s budget workshop yesterday, complex manager Steve Prescott made the case for council spending about $400,000 on a cooling system that would kick in on hot days.

“With the heat and the humid-

ity it becomes a real issue. You get irate customers sitting there saying ‘this is absolutely ridiculous, what are you doing about it’?”

Prescott said.

Ashburton Mayor Donna Favel had no hesitation in giving the spending her support.

“We have to do this. We have to keep people happy and enjoying their facility,” she said.

Councillor Peter Reveley didn’t agree.

“Where will this stop. These things should have been there at the start and now we’re spending more money to get it right. The town’s not that strong at the moment and we have huge expenditure already coming up. We need to take a break on this,” he said.

The council had already taken

a one-year break to monitor the current season as the request had initially been made last year, Prescott said.

The cooling units weren’t the only extra cash he was asking council for, however.

Preschool opening new playground

Phoenix Preschool students are all set for the official opening of the centre’s new playground tonight.

The first stage of the plan to improve the facility has seen a redevelopment of the playground area.

It saw new concrete laid in the verandah area, new grass sowed and a mound with a tunnel running underneath for the children to play in.

Centre manager, Anna Hatton, said that the process began in March 2014 with a committee of parents and teachers planning what would be best for the preschool in the future.

Once the planning and consultation process was complete, the three stage plan was laid out. The first stage would involve the construction of the new playground area, the

second stage would involve a relocation of the swings and sandpit to a better suited location. The third and final stage will involve the construction of a new office area, as currently a room is used in the Ashburton College Menorlue as an office facility.

Hatton said due to the preschool being a communityrun facility, all the work and cost was covered by a grant from the Lions Foundation and hard work from local businesses and the committee.

The new playground will be celebrated at a parent picnic tonight which has been delayed to line up with the opening of the playground to allow for the parents and sponsors of the project to see the fruits of their hard work.

“It will be nice for parents to come along and see what has happened,” said Hatton.

Councillors had no appetite to buy $160,000 worth of floor tiles that would protect the stadium floor and make it available for large non-sporting events.

The complex has a $4.1 million loss on the books for next year and that prompted councillor Stuart Wilson to suggest fees should be increased.

“I don’t think it’s fair the general ratepayer should be

paying more money for this facility, it should be user pays.

We have a moral responsibility with learn to swim and I don’t want to see the costs for this put up but gym membership is discretionary,” he said.

There was a price point where people wouldn’t pay and attendance numbers started dropping and councillors needed to keep that in mind, Prescott said.

“The costs associated with our venue are pretty much in line with the rest of the country.

“We’ve looked at our membership fees and compared to some of the bigger players they’re high; they’re starting to drop their charges.”

Audiologist off to help in Rarotonga

Audiologist Brenna Sincock heads to Rarotonga on Monday to take part in a project co-ordinated by the Ministry of Health for the Cook Islands.

The director of Brenna Sincock Hearing is based in Rolleston, but works throughout the region and has many Mid Canterbury clients.

The humanitarian trip will see her be based at Rarotonga Hospital for one week where she will be seeing up to 50 clients per day.

A busy day in New Zealand, she

says, would result in about eight consultations.

Sincock will be working closely with hearing nurses and Ear, Nose and Throat specialists (ENT), fitting hearing aids, check-ups and troubleshooting.

“My colleague, Scott Wright, set up the initiative 15 years ago, with the Ministry of Health and takes two trips per year,” she said.

“I’ve heard it can get quite busy, I’m really looking forward to it.”

Sincock has worked as an audiologist for 10 years in New Zealand and this will be the first time she

has worked overseas.

She will be taking over all her own equipment and was overwhelmed to receive many offers from manufactures as well as donations after putting a call out on Facebook.

“There’s a small space in my luggage for clothing then the rest will be for equipment,” she said.

The Ministry of Health for the Cook Islands funds specialist teams throughout the year.

The focus of these teams ranges from orthopaedics to cardiology and audiology.

National seeks candidate

The National Party plans to announce a Rangitata electorate candidate in April, and is calling for nominations.

If successful at election the candidate will replace current Rangitata MP Jo Goodhew.

“It’s a strong National seat and I’m sure there will be people really keen to put their hand up,” said party secretary Greg Hamilton.

Nominations opened on Wednesday and close March 15 at midday.

Hamilton said incumbent Jo Goodhew had been a very good MP for the electorate, and it was hoped there would be competition for her replacement with as many worthy nominations as possible.

“We work hard to get feelers out to make sure people are aware of the opportunity,” Hamilton said.

Get Coloured Run seeking sponsors

House of Travel is the first local business to sign up to sponsor a station in the Ashburton Get Coloured Run. The first event of its kind in Mid Canterbury, will take place on Sunday, April 2 at Lake Hood and is presented by the CanInspire Charitable Trust.

House of Travel owner/operator Maxine Whiting said they were looking forward to the day and were excited to secure the ‘purple station’.

“We jumped on board as soon as we could,” she said.

Colour runs are fun events that involve participants being doused with coloured powder as they pass through different stations of the event route.

Runners turn up to the starting gates dressed in white, and after 5km, cross the finishing line covered in a rainbow of colours.

Co-ordinator Louise Duke said they were thrilled to bring the fun walk/run to the district, following previous successful versions held in Christchurch and Temuka.

“House of Travel help us out with all our events and work away quietly in the background,” she said.

Ratepayers might have cause to celebrate as the Ashburton District Council looks set to sign off a rate rise that is well below the 11 per cent tipped for the 2017-2018 year in its long-term plan.

When councillors began discussions on next year’s budgets, they opened the batting with a 5.42 per cent increase on the table, but by the end of day one they had more than $700,000 worth of new expenditure on the board with more to come on day two.

In brief Large Hanmer fire Large fires near the Hanmer Springs turnoff on the Lewis Pass Rd brought traffic to a standstill yesterday. There are reports of six uncontrolled fires near the Lewis Pass Highway north of Hanmer Springs. The highway was closed as a result, 10km north of Hanmer. Fire Shift Commander Andrew Norris said the fires aren’t suspicious – they’re believed to have started from sparks off a vehicle. Norris said the steep terrain was making the fires travel faster and more difficult for fire crews to attack. The fires closed roads between Springs Junction and Hanmer Springs along State Highway 47. No detours are in place and drivers are advised not to travel. Delays are expected.

“A lot of businesses are worried because their staff want to take part in the colour run, therefore they’re not keen to man a station,” said Duke.

“Don’t worry, we have volunteers on hand, once you have decorated and established your

station in all you require, we can have volunteers man the station for you and throw colour on the runners and even your staff as they run past.”

Rates may rise more than 5%

budgeted price for the district’s new wheelie bin kerbside collection service, lower interest rates and changes in rural fire services.

In setting the scene for the workshop chief executive Andrew Dalziel reminded councillors that for every $330,000 extra they added to expenditure for the coming year, rates would rise by one per cent.

“There will be things you really need to have in the budget and there will be areas where you decide to reduce the level of spending,” he said.

Last year the council decided to spend $650,000 extra on road maintenance. It was built into next year’s budget and it made the cut again.

The biggest ticket item again was roading, with plans to carry out $10.3 million of work next year on the district’s roads. Of that, 51 per cent comes from NZ Transport Agency subsidies.

Another $986,631 of rates money will be spent on unsubsidised roading. Footpath work will take $1 million out of the rating pot.

Councillors also showed they had heeded staff warnings that the main sewer line running under the Ashburton River could rupture when they were happy to sign off the $200,000 that will kick start the Ashburton relief sewer and river crossing project.

The EA Networks Centre could be responsible for pumping up rates next year, with councillors

saying they were happy to take a second look at a request from centre manager Steve Prescott for several items, including an air cooling system. All up these could add almost $500,000 to rates.

After day one of budget workshops, councillors agreed to spend more money on roading, arts and culture and the library but less on footpaths and wastewater.

Today, spending on wheelie bins, district promotion and business and economic development are among the items up for discussion.

There are also a number of additional budget requests that will come up for discussion.

Police are investigating the attempted kidnapping of a young woman in Nelson on Tuesday night. The 27-year-old woman was walking home at 10.30pm when she was dragged into a car in the suburb of Tahunanui. Detective Sergeant Alexander Bruning said three men approached the woman asking if she wanted a lift. When she declined one of the men got out of the car and tried to drag her into the vehicle. Bruning said she managed to evade him and run home where she raised the alarm. The car at the centre of the attempted abduction is described as an early-2000s model white Subaru Legacy station wagon.

Port Hills fire Two weeks after a devastating fire broke out in Christchurch’s Port Hills, 17 fire crews are still targeting hotspots. Civil Defence says more than 99 per cent of the fire zone is now controlled, and there is 10 metres between the edge of the fire zone and vegetation.

There were 17 fire crews on site yesterday, plus an overhead team.

Civil Defence Canterbury released new aerial imagery showing the extent of the Port Hills fire. Crews continue to target hotspots, focusing on areas near unburned vegetation or structures. Civil Defence asks anyone who sees smoke or fire to dial 111.

Relief when discharged

Learning about where food comes from Students at Fairton School have been learning all about where food comes from and the processes it goes through to make it to their dinner tables.

This week has been busy for the students as they first tried their

hand churning butter before testing their preserving skills as they tackled the task of jam making.

Yesterday saw the students collecting wheat, before travelling to NZ Bio Grains to learn how it would be milled and processed.

Once back at school the flour was used to make bread, and each student hand-crafted their own individual bread roll to be baked.

The fresh rolls were served with the home churned butter and

freshly made jam to provide the perfect basis for a lesson in table etiquette and social skills.

Next week will see the students looking at the world of vegetables, which will include a trip to Talley’s.

Lake snow a local concern

Mid Canterbury lakes are being sampled for algae that can cause lake snow, which could clog irrigators and filters on storage lakes and in boats.

Environment Canterbury contracted NIWA to collect algal samples from 20 lakes around the Canterbury region to screen for the presence of Lindavia algae.

The Ashburton lakes sampled include Lakes Heron, Camp, Clearwater, Maori Lakes, Denny, Donn, Emily, Emma, Roundabout and Spider lakes.

ECan ecology scientist Sian Barbour told members of the Ashburton Water Zone Commit-

tee yesterday that the problem was affecting deep, clear lakes.

Lake snow has already been detected in Lake Coleridge.

Barbour said the Lindavia algae and the lake snow it produced was like didymo and rock snot in rivers.

The species was introduced to New Zealand in 2004 and climate change or increased nutrient loading to lakes from farming could be responsible for it becoming a problem.

The grazing habits by the North American water flea Daphnia pulex could also be responsible, she said.

Lake snow has become a big problem in Wanaka, where fish-

ermen are reporting lines and fishing gear being fouled and blocking of their boat water intake filters.

The town’s reticulated water supply was also drawn from the lake so household filters were also clogging.

The snow was also unsightly on the water surface and there had been reports of multisport athletes emerging from the lake with the snow on their bodies.

Barbour said it was non toxic and posed no known human health risk and Otago University researchers were studying it.

She said even a slight shift in climatic or water conditions could have a massive difference

on algal communities, triggering growth.

The samples from the Ashburton lakes are currently being examined but the one person qualified to identify the algae was swamped.

Committee member Stuart Wilson, representing the Ashburton District Council, said if fishermen brought the algae into the country then they should own it. It was too easy to blame rock snow on farmers and effluent run-off, he said.

Lake snow has the potential to affect power generation at Lake Coleridge by blocking intake filters. The lake also supplies irrigation water to farmers.

Matthew Richard Baxter smiled with relief and quietly thanked the judge when he was discharged without conviction on two charges on Monday.

The 21-year-old of Mayfield was appearing in the Ashburton District Court. He had previously pleaded guilty to possessing cannabis for supply and possession of a firearm without a licence.

Counsel Marilyn Gilchrist applied for discharge without conviction due to the effect such a record would have on her client’s future employment and ability to travel.

Judge Stephanie Edwards noted the application was opposed by the police, but said she had to give consideration to whether the consequences of the conviction would be out of proportion to the seriousness of the offending. Additionally, she was guided by previous Court of Appeal decisions.

Her Honour recounted details of the case.

At the time of offending the defendant and his friends were grieving after losing another friend in a car accident, and they used cannabis to numb grief and pain.

Police were called to Baxter’s address after his friends called emergency services due to concern about his mental health. Police saw utensils and searched the property, altogether finding 112 grams of cannabis, some of which was in a cupboard with a rifle.

Police had accepted the amount found represented small scale dealing between the defendant and his friends, and there was no significant commerciality involved.

The rifle was for shooting rabbits on the farm on which he was employed, and police had accepted there was a legitimate reason to have it.

Baxter was a first time offender who was unlikely to reoffend, and was now in a better place emotionally after receiving counselling.

“You were a young person of otherwise good character,” Judge Edwards said.

“I consider this is a case where the consequences of a conviction would be out of proportion to the gravity of your offending.”

New season monarchs emerging

The first of this year’s newlyemerged monarch butterflies are delighting Mid Cantabrians as they flutter around.

They are also being chased by male butterflies of a different species, which are attracted by their bold colours.

Lincoln University insect ecologist Professor Stephen Wratten said most butterflies in residents’ gardens now were the first of the “over-wintering generation” for 2017. They were beginning to emerge from chrysalises, and would continue to do so through the autumn, before finding somewhere relatively warm and sheltered to hibernate over winter.

They would begin flying again in spring before breeding in summer and then dying after laying their eggs on swan plants.

There would still be the odd parent butterfly around currently from last year’s breeding season, and these would generally appear to have tattered wings.

Professor Wratten said he understood from general observations and talking to others, that the monarch butterfly season in Canterbury this year had been average to above average.

“It means they are finding those plants and running out of food.”

When the caterpillars ran out

of food, they generally crawled off and pupated, and if they were small when they did this, they would emerge as smaller adults.

A behaviour many noticed was native yellow admiral butterflies,

whose caterpillars fed on stinging nettle, flying after the more spectacular monarchs. It was a mystery as to why the admirals did this, however one theory was that they thought monarchs were

large females, with their bright colours and size acting as a “super stimulus”.

“They haven’t got a big brain these butterflies,” Professor Wratten said.

Trump addresses Congress Heralding a “new chapter of American greatness,” President Donald Trump issued a broad call for overhauling the nation’s health care system and significantly boosting military spending yesterday, swapping his trademark pugnaciousness and personal insults for a more restrained tone as he addressed Congress for the first time.

In an appeal to American optimism, Trump declared, “The time for small thinking is over.”

In an hour-long address, Trump defended his early actions in office and ignored the missteps that have set even his allies in Washington on edge.

He outlined a populist agenda centred on promises to compel companies to bring manufacturing jobs back to the US. The president was greeted by enthusiastic applause as he entered the House chamber, though it was filled with Democrats who vigorously oppose his policies and many Republicans who never expected him to be elected.

Trump offered a basic blueprint of his priorities, including ensuring that those with preexisting conditions have access to coverage, allowing people to buy insurance across state lines and offering tax credits and expanded health savings accounts to help Americans purchase coverage.

Beshear took a populist tenor in Democrats’ formal response after the speech, accusing Trump of planning to “rip affordable health insurance” from Americans and being “Wall Street’s champion”.

Trump was vague in his call for tax reform, another Republican priority. He promised “massive tax relief for the middle class” and a reduction in corporate tax rates, but glossed over how he would offset the cuts.

The president also urged Congress to pass a $1 trillion infrastructure package financed

through both public and private capital.

Trump sent unexpectedly mixed messages on immigration, one of his signature campaign issues.

He pledged to vigorously target people living in the US illegally who “threaten our communities and prey on our citizens”. But he told news anchors before his speech that he was open to legislation that could provide a pathway to legal status, and he told Congress he believed “real and positive immigration reform is possible”.

The majority of Trump’s address centred on the domestic, economic-focused issues that were at the centre of his presidential campaign. His national security message centred largely on a call for significantly boosting military spending and taking strong but unspecified measures to protect the nation from “radical Islamic terrorism”.

Trump also voiced support for NATO but reiterated his call for partner countries to meet their financial obligations to the military alliance.

Strong obesity link to 11 cancers found Being obese is strongly linked to 11 different cancers, British scientists have confirmed.

A new study published in the British Medical Journal (BMJ) found that being obese increases the risk of multiple myeloma and cancer of the oesophagus, stomach, bowel, rectum, biliary tract system (liver, gall bladder and bile duct), pancreas, postmenopausal breast, womb, ovary and kidney.

The World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF), which funded the study, estimates about 25,000 cancer cases could be prevented in the UK every year if everyone was a healthy weight.

The researchers identified 204 studies that looked at the link between body mass index, weight gain, and waist circumference, and 36 cancers and their subtypes.

The Obesity Health Alliance, said: “Obesity is a serious health concern and on top of being linked to major cancers, can also increase the risk of type-2 diabetes, heart and liver disease and mental health problems.

“This is why it’s so important to introduce measures like the soft drinks industry levy, reduce sugar, saturated fat and salt from everyday foods, and close loopholes to protect children from junk food marketing.”

Cane toad snags to save native animals Threatened native animals in NSW will be fed cane toad snags, so they don’t croak when the real thing comes along.

The conservation project aims to teach local carnivores like quolls not to eat the poisonous amphibians by giving them small samples of their flesh.

The state government has shelled out $75,000 to support work being carried out by University of Sydney professor Rick Shine into ways to deal

with cane toad invasions.

“Field studies show that aversion training can help predators to survive the onslaught of toads to a new area,” Prof Shine said in a statement.

“It is a simple idea and approach but it has already proven successful in helping quolls in tropical Australia survive the invasion of cane toads even after a single episode of training.”

In NSW, cane toads are mainly be found in the Clarence Valley in the state’s north.

But there have been incursions into Port Macquarie on the mid-north coast and Sydney’s Tarren Point.

“Cane toads are continuing to spread into areas of conservation significance and affect a range of wildlife,” NSW Office or Environment & Heritage chief Ian Hunter said.

The NSW project builds on an already successful aversion therapy programme for wildlife in the Northern Territory.

Cane toads were introduced into Australia in the 1930s to help control destructive beetles in Queensland’s sugar crane crops but have since become a serious pest.

Their presence has caused the deaths of several rare and vulnerable species across the country because of the deadly toxins they release.

Emotional appeal to court Australian woman Sara Connor has made an emotional address to a Bali court as she stares down the possibility of missing her two sons growing up.

A week after the shock of hearing the prosecution’s request to have her jailed for eight years over the death of Bali police officer Wayan Sudarsa, Connor appeared emotional and deflated at Denpasar Court on Monday.

Expecting the worst, Connor expressed fears of not being able to see her children grow up.

“They miss me and are waiting for me,” she cried.

“If this is what God had planned for my life – to punish me harshly and deprive my children of their mother, I hope he will give my children strength to cope.”

Just hours after arriving in Bali for a holiday, Connor went down to Kuta Beach with her British boyfriend David Taylor on the night of August 16.

A fight broke out between Sudarsa and Taylor when the British man confronted the police officer about Connor’s lost wallet.

Connor has always said she did nothing but try to separate the pair during the violent struggle and did not know the officer was seriously injured when she and Taylor left the beach in the early hours of August 17.

Despite Taylor corroborating this account, prosecutors have asked for he and Connor to serve the same eight-year term.

had said otherwise.

He described the sentence request by the prosecution as “very dangerous” and “reckless” and said instead that his client should be released on all charges and her good name restored.

Connor said she believed Taylor when he told her his fight with the cop was not serious.

“I let David burn the clothes (they wore on the night of Sudarsa’s death) because I was confused and in shock and

“How different my life would be now if my bag was never stolen (on Kuta Beach) and the taxi driver had taken me to the police station that night,” Connor added.

“I deeply regret and apologise for any mistake ... I humbly request the court to consider this,” she added.

The prosecution is expected to respond later this week.

The union says the number of affected workers will rise in coming years, as the effects of poor dust control practices and substandard health checks on workers come to light.

Just last month, NSW recorded its first black lung case in almost 50 years.

The other 18 cases are all from Queensland.

Union spokesman Stephen Smyth says the latest worker to be diagnosed does not want to be identified, but that he worked underground at a coal mine in

central Queensland.

Smyth says it’s time for the mining industry to step up and take financial responsibility for sick workers.

“The system of identifying and remedying the causes of the disease have clearly failed, and it is workers and their families who are paying the price,” he said in a statement on Wednesday.

“The mining industry sits at the centre of the problem and it is the mining industry that needs to play a key role in supporting victims and their families.”

Smyth said sick workers will need long-term support.

“While many workers are not sick enough to stay home and get support, they are too sick to keep their current jobs in the mining sector, losing their livelihoods, with no course of action to support their families,” he said.

Black lung is caused by prolonged and close exposure to respirable coal dust and the gradual build up of coal dust particles in lung tissue.

Three dead in crash

Eradicated disease on rise in Australia An underground coal miner who worked in central Queensland has become the 19th person diagnosed with black lung disease in less than two years.

The disease, once thought to have been eradicated in Australia, has recently re-emerged and the mining union has blamed poor dust management practices at mine sites.

The CFMEU is demanding mining companies contribute 10 cents for every tonne of coal produced in Queensland to a support fund for victims.

Rezgui opened fire on the beach and grounds of the Sousse hotel in June 2015, but the judge, sitting as coroner at the victims’ inquest, said the law regarding neglect did not cover tourists on holiday.

The lawyers for more than 20 of Rezgui’s victims had wanted this included after the lengthy inquest heard evidence from survivors that they were not warned of the danger of holiday-

ing in Tunisia before they left.

The inquests also heard the hotel had just a handful of unarmed guards, while “cowardly” local police delayed their arrival to tackle Rezgui, who killed 38 people in total.

Giving his reasons for rejecting a neglect ruling, the judge said there were a lot of “what ifs” around the case, and better hotel security may simply have meant more people died on the beach.

But the judge said: “Having reviewed the legal advice on gun law in Tunisia it’s clear this was not a realistic option.

“The simple but tragic truth in this case is that a gunman armed with a gun and grenades went to that hotel intending to kill as many tourists as he could.”

Three people have been killed and two injured after a small plane crashed into a residential neighbourhood in the city of Riverside in California. All of the victims were on the aircraft, which had five people on board. Fire Chief Michael Moore said it was thought that those on the plane were a family, two adults and three teenagers, who had been in the area for a cheerleading competition at Disneyland. The plane had just taken off from Riverside airport, around 100km east of Los Angeles when it crashed.

Printed guns A Sydney man manufactured guns using a 3D printer and instructions off the internet inspired by his love of science fiction, a court has heard. Sicen Sun appeared in court yesterday, a day after police found four 3D-manufactured imitation guns, two air pistols and at least one 3D printer in his eastern suburbs home. They had searched the Waverley unit after the 27-yearold allegedly advertised a gun for sale on the internet for $A1 million dollars. Sun is facing four firearmsrelated charges. He’s due to face court again on April 27.

Death after exorcism A woman has died in northern Nicaragua from severe burn injuries suffered during an exorcism. The leader of a religious sect had ordered that the 25-year-old be thrown upon a pyre, authorities said. Before the final act of violence, the woman was held for a week in the religious group’s compound. The sect’s leader said the woman must be burned in order to free her of demons. The man and four others were taken into custody. The victim,s husband demanded the perpetrators be held accountable.

Council takes diplomatic approach Megan Gnad

t’s a hot topic that divides other New Zealand towns, but the Ashburton District Council has decided against introducing an Easter Sunday trading policy for the district.

Following consultation, a council report found there was little demand for a policy, which would have determined if local businesses could trade in all or parts of the district on Easter Sunday.

This is in comparison to major tourism towns, such as Wanaka, which has battled for years to be allowed to legally open shops on the day in question.

After years of campaigning, the Shop Trading Hours Act 1990 was amended in 2016 to enable territorial authorities to decide whether retailers in their districts could open on Easter Sunday.

Councils can now create local policies to allow shop trading and all shop employees have the ability to refuse to work on Easter Sunday without providing a reason to their employer.

Waitaki MP Jacqui Dean has been one of the driving forces in her constituency, fighting for the rights of retailers in Wanaka, when businesses in Queenstown were free to open their doors on Easter Sunday without penalty.

Those living nearby, but outside of the jurisdiction area, faced prosecution for their decision.

The change to the act gave power back to local communities, allowing councils to reach their own decision over Easter Sunday.

And it’s clear, one size certainly doesn’t fit all.

While these tourism hot spots were prepared to dice with the law to be allowed to stay open, other areas, such as right here in Ashburton, didn’t see the need to adopt such a policy.

And that’s fine, too.

Council said that of the businesses who supported an Easter Sunday trading policy, only two currently open on Sundays and one business stated they may want to open on Easter Sunday in future.

It’s great to see a decision, which aimed to put power back into the hands of the local authorities, has had the desired effect.

For one town, it was a dealbreaking decision, for another it barely raised an eyebrow.

I wonder what else we could apply this diplomatic approach to?

YOUR VIEW New civic building and library I think it is disgusting that the council should contemplate destroying the Methodist Hall building in Baring Square to replace it with the new council etc.

The hall is probably, in my opinion, the best looking building in the whole CBD so wake up and rebuild on the present site.

***** What a sad day it was last Thursday when our council met to decide on the location and style of our long-awaited administration building and library.

After many years of debate, and countless hours of planning, public consultation and thousands and thousands of dollars spent on consultants and a preferred site presented to them, our councillors sat on their hands and did nothing.

This is a new council and, at the first major hurdle of their tenure, they shied, broke the railings and ran off the track.

In doing so, they showed huge disrespect to all the councillors who have gone before, huge disrespect to all the staff who have spent hours and hours in preparation of reports, compiling results from the ratepayers’ submissions and presenting the preferences to our councillors for consideration and voting on.

Most of all, they have been disrespectful to all of our citizens who went to the trouble to consider the options and make submissions.

It appears to me that a number of our councillors have arrived at the council table with personal agendas.

POLL RESULT As citizens, they would mount platforms, wave banners, pout and strut, declaim and denounce without any responsibility, but now they are representing all of the people of our district and we need, nay demand, clear thinking, independent thought and “intestinal fortitude”.

Our mayor needs to realise that she is now “chairperson of the board” and not “camp mother” and our councillors need to realise that they are responsible for the future of our district and that they are not sitting at a meeting of the local primary school PTA. Council business is far too important for that type of attitude. I have the distinct feeling that most of our new councillors are completely out of their depth.

They have made a decision to revisit an old idea that was abandoned some time ago, all on an 11th-hour presentation from the college principal.

How was it that a number of people were permitted to make last-minute presentations when submissions closed many months ago?

At best that decision looks foolish, at worst it could be illegal. Whatever it is, in my opinion it is very unfair.

So, what now? I suspect that like a mother hen, our mayor will gather her chickens around her and disappear into the whispering echo chamber of social media where they will congratulate themselves on their actions.

That is sad, very sad, but the saddest part of all, is that I believe they have absolutely no idea of what they have done.

There will need to be some steep learning curves over the next few weeks and a new understanding of the roles and responsibilities taken on when elected to office.

Is Apple going off the boil in NZ?

By Matt Nippert After years of double-digit revenue growth, Kiwi consumers appear to be falling out of love with Apple with the personal electronics giants posting flat revenue growth for its New Zealand subsidiary.

According to accounts filed with the companies office for results for the year to September 24, 2016, Apple recorded local sales of $744 million – just a 1.5 per cent increase on the year prior.

The world’s largest company, on the back of its premium mobile phones and tablets, had reported average revenue growth in New Zealand over the previous five years of 12.1 per cent.

The largest cost in Apple’s local accounts is a cost of sales charge from related parties. In the most recent year this amounted to $729m, largely accounting for its relatively modest profits in New Zealand of $9.6m, down from $26.7m.

Tax, a thorny issue internationally for Apple over the past year after the European Union handed the company a $20b overdue tax bill, amounted to $10m paid locally over the past year to Inland Revenue.

During the year Apple also paid a $28.4m dividend during the period to its immediate parent in Australia. – NZME

King Salmon posts 52 per cent gain

By Jonathan Underhill New Zealand King Salmon, which listed last October after raising $70 million selling shares, posted a 52 per cent gain in first-half profit and said it was on track to meet its prospectus target for the full year.

Net profit rose to $8.7 million, or 7 cents a share, in the six months ended December 31, from $5.7 million, or 5 cents, a year earlier, the Nelson-based company said in a statement. Sales rose to $63.6 million from $56.6 million.

The company, which is 40 per cent owned by Malaysia’s Oregon Group, sold 3400 tonnes of gilded and gutted salmon in the first half, up 13 per cent from a year earlier,

while export volumes climbed 19 per cent. King Salmon’s fortunes partly rest on the outcome of a proposal to relocate up to six of its salmon farms within the Marlborough Sounds to ensure they continue to meet environmental standards, a process the government announced in January was being put out for consultation.

“The first four months since listing have given us a good platform for future growth,” said chairman John Ryder. “We are positive about the future of the company and its global potential, and we are on track with our investment in new farm capacity and operational upgrades to support this strategy.”

Of the $70 million raised in the

initial public offering, $30 million was new capital to repay debt and fund investments while the remainder went to existing shareholders who sold down their holdings, including Oregon and Direct Capital. The IPO attracted new shareholders including food investor China Resources Ng Fung, which acquired about 10 percent of the company. Yesterday King Salmon said Ng Fung director Wang Xin had been appointed to its board.

King Salmon is projecting revenue of $130.1 million in the year ending June 30, 2017, for a profit of $10 million, compared to a $2.6 million profit on sales of $114.1 million in 2016.

A New Zealand marketing expert says we need to follow Australia’s lead and lay down stricter rules for social media influencers who are surreptitiously flogging products on their pages.

The Australian Association of National Advertisers (AANA) this week updated its best practice guidelines to apply to the growing number of influential social media personalities.

It said: “Marketers should be cognisant that, in seeking to make their advertising and marketing communication more engaging, they do not camouflage the fact that it is advertising.”

For example, should a social

media influencer collaborate with a make-up brand to create editorial content such as a blog, vlog or tweet about the brand, AANA said the commercial nature of the relationship may need to be disclosed.

If the brand had control over content on the influencer’s page, then that material must be clearly distinguishable as a marketing communication, AANA said.

Advertising veteran Mike Hutcheson said New Zealand needed to follow suit, with an ever-increasing number of social media celebrities having an influence here.

Mohair producers gather in Ashburton

Mohair producers from all around the country will gather in Ashburton this weekend for their annual conference.

The goat farmers will spend tomorrow visiting Five Star Beef and Ashfords then get down to business at their conference at the Hotel Ashburton on Saturday.

The annual meeting will be followed by an address from nutritionist Mark Ferguson, who will talk about feed requirements for goats.

Ashburton angora goat farmers Ray and Donece McEwan, who have been in the industry 40

years, will also host the group on a visit to their farm on the outskirts of Ashburton.

Donece McEwan said members of the public were welcome to listen to Ferguson’s address at the Hotel Ashburton and to visit their farm at 200 Methven Highway, where the farm visit would start at 1.30pm.

The McEwans run Burnbrae Karawai Stud and run 60 angoras at their home block and another herd at Maronan.

The market for luxury angora fibre is buoyant, with top grade fibre fetching about $34 a kilogram.

bre is exported and used to make luxury cloth used in the fashion industry.

The McEwans said it was also more fire retardant than wool and used in the manufacture of firefighting suits.

The Ashburton couple say the angora goats are a great fit on lifestyle blocks and anyone interested in knowing more about goat farming – for meat, milk or fibre – was welcome to attend the public talks at the weekend.

The conference will also include the presentation of a shield for the top New Zealand fleece and the McEwans are hoping to retain their title from last year.

New group formed to help with MAR site A group of 12 is expected to meet in the next two weeks to form a governance group to progress managed aquifer recharge (MAR) in Mid Canterbury.

A trial MAR site at Lagmhor is having a positive impact on groundwater levels and nitrate concentrations in the area and the governance group will monitor the project for the next three-and-a-half years and consult with the community about rolling out more sites in the Hinds Plains area.

The targeted recharge will help reduce nitrate levels, increase groundwater storage and improve biodiversity in lowland streams.

The governance group will report to the Ashburton Water Zone Committee. It will include council, Arowhenua and environmental group representatives, as well as irrigators, farmers and the Ministry for

Primary Industries.

Those involved with the Lagmhor site say it is a major environmental project helping improve water quality and quantity. It is essentially a leaky pond that allows water to filter through to underground aquifers.

To expand the project at another four sites over the next 10 years could cost about $11 million.

Environment Canterbury’s State of Water Report released last month confirmed a monitored well connected to the MAR project was among wells that had showed a “very high” improvement in water levels in Canterbury. It was the only site in Mid Canterbury.

Groundwater levels have fallen to record lows in some parts, on the back of three consecutive dry winters.

Mid Canterbury wetlands projects given cash injection Two Mid Canterbury landowners have been given a collective $16,253 to develop wetlands on their properties.

John and Leigh Wood, of Wilkins Road, were granted $8455 from the Ashburton Water Zone Committee this week to create, restore and enhance a wetlands habitat near the rear of their Wilkins Road property. The land borders the Ashburton River and they are keen to share it with school groups and visitors once the wetlands have developed.

Methven farmer James Halford was granted $7798 for riparian planting that would help improve the water quality and ecosystem health of a creek on his farm. It is part of a corridor of work along Harding Creek.

Biodiversity officer Sarah Heddell said the work should help the creek’s eel population.

The Ashburton project involves clearing blackberry to allow native plants to regrow and restoring a natural spring-fed stream.

Heddell said the Woods had already begun clearing the weeds and natural regeneration was beginning to show. They plan to plant natives and hope to restore the area as close to its original look as possible.

“They are very enthusiastic and willing landowners and happy to get involved with some of the schools.

“It is a great wee project and the kids will love it.”

Urban also to blame for water Urban waterways should not be let off the hook under a government document released last week aiming for 90 per cent of rivers and lakes to be swimmable by 2040, says IrrigationNZ boss Andrew Curtis.

Curtis said farmers had received the lion’s share of blame for New Zealand’s water quality degradation.

“And despite evidence backing up the contribution cities and industries make to poor water quality, they have largely escaped the finger-pointing. I’m hoping the Government will call every New Zealander to account for water quality ... ” IrrigationNZ was pleased the Govern-

ment had recognised the important economic contribution farmers make to our communities, stating that regional councils must consider the economic wellbeing of their community when making decisions about water allocation.

“Farmers and growers make significant investments in irrigation infrastructure and on-farm efficiencies, and the return on that investment is spent in towns and cities throughout New Zealand. We all benefit from irrigation and it’s important councils don’t impose restrictions that negatively impact the viability of our primary sector.”

It has been a very busy bowling week for some of the members. Some Sub Centre finals have been played and Diane Gutberlet, Diana King, Gaynor Crack and Alison Gibbs won Ch 4’s and Diana King, Heather Goodall and Noeline Woods were R/up in the Ch triples. J 10 Junior Pairs held at Allenton saw Judie Ryk and Laraine Mills win with 4 wins.

Well done to you all.

On Thursday at 9.30am Murray Anderson and Colin Dennis will be playing the final of the Men’s Singles, should make for good watching. Can you be there to cheer them on?

Recently some of the members travelled to the West Coast and Diane Gutberlet and Wendy Suttie in a composite team, were winners of the plate and Judie Ryk was a team placed 3rd in the plate.

In House games coming up is the Harry Lee on Thursday March 9 at 12.30. Mufti is the dress code and cost $5. Names on the board please. A reminder from John Smart to please return any trophies so that the engraving can be done ASAP. It makes for smooth going on presentation night.

To those not well, or in or out of hospital, a get well goes out to you all. See you soon and good bowling all.

Hope McIntosh played the piano for the singing of the RSA song and happy birthday to one member.

Sympathy was given to anyone, who has sadly lost a loved one. Sick members were wished a speedy recovery.

Twenty people went on the bus trip on Wednesday February 8. Destination: Akaroa. They had a look around Little River, had lunch at the Hill Top Hotel and stopped at Barry’s Bay Cheese Factory on the way. All had a good day out.

It was then eyes down for housie. Several games were played. A lot of fun and as usual some were luckier than others. Colleen was the caller.

Raffles were won by Marilyn Coley and Jan Johnathan.

Ashburton Branch of NZ Ostomy Society Meeting held at the Savage Club Rooms March 22 at 2pm.

President, Dennis Blincoe, welcomed a good turnout of members. The Ostomy Magazine and newsletter is due to be sent out shortly so keep an eye on your mailbox.

Reminder: AGM is to be held on April 26.

Jill Newton, a long-standing member, has been nominated for a New Zealand/Australia award The Great Comeback. Nominations are limited to five people and Jill has the honour of being the sole NZ nominee.

Our speaker could not attend due to family illness so Dennis suggested members relate a story about their first job experiences.

What a lot of fun that turned out to be and it brought back many memories members could share. Afternoon tea followed but the first job experience talk continued long after that so it was a very late finish to the afternoon.

Ashburton County Lions President Julie McKimmie welcomed 41 members plus 4 visitors to the Ashburton County Lions Club’s February tea meeting at the Hotel Ashburton on February 22.

Zone chairman Jan Stonyer spoke to the meeting outlining the work of Lions Club International and Lions Club International Foundation. Around the world Lions Clubs operate in 200 geographical areas and with 1.4 million members. She then showed a video highlighting some of the humanitarian work Lions are involved in worldwide including SightFirst, Lions Quest, partnership with Special Olympics programme, Sight for Kids and Measles vaccine programme. Jan also reminded us of the support that had come back to New Zealand from LCIF especially following the Christchurch and Kaikoura earthquakes.

To continue its work in supporting local organisations the club then approved the payment of $1200 each to the Maia Foundation and the Canterbury West Coast Air Rescue. The meeting also agreed to support young people from Ashburton wanting to take part in either the Berwick Outdoor Experience or the Young Speechmakers completion and we are now looking for suitable candidates to take part in these events.

To conclude the evening each table competed in a ‘note for note’ competition with members trying to identify well known tunes from just 3 or 4 notes. This was followed by more light hearted tail twisting and the drawing of the raffle.

Irene Williams and Cushla Coyle gave us duets on their piano accordions starting with Gee there’s some nice songs around, composed by Iris Taylor.

Neil White was next up with La Paloma and Perfidia and You Belong to Me. Beautiful old tunes.

Allan Andrews, a new pianist to the group gave us some lovely music on the piano. Maggie, Just a Closer Walk with Thee, Welcome to the club.

Jack Bubb also a student finished the evening with a song and the keyboard; It’s a new day and Summer Time. He then shifted over to the piano and played Nothing else Matters and Feeling Good. Another great night.

Winners of the Trophy were: Betty King, Bev Attewell and Richard Browne with 5 wins.

Runners up: Val Partleton, Marion Harrison and Stephen Kyle with 4 wins.

We saw some very good play both in pointing and shooting.

We have had our Picnic and Play Petanque in the park event and we were really pleased with the interest shown by members of the public.

We also ran an evening which was a fundraiser for St. John.

Our next event is our Ashburton Doubles which is on March 11th and already we have entries from outside our club.

So plenty to keep us busy.

Ashburton MSA Travel Section The Ashburton MSA is taking its first outing for several months, and this is to Erewhon Station on Wednesday March 22. Information about this outing is on the notice board at the club.

The Plains Ladies Club Wilma welcomed a good attendance to the February meeting. Birthdays, apologies, correspondence and Treasurers report were read out. Members were reminded that Subs are due next month. Trish Cook was inducted and welcomed as new member. Wilma urged members to think about standing on the committee as several members are standing down. After morning tea Isla Jones told us about her interesting trip around the North Island recently.

After flying to Wellington they travelled in vintage cars visiting Napier, Havelock North, Gisborne, Hawkes Bay, Whakatane, Rotorua Taupo and went to the Masterton Show and back to Wellington. Twentynine cars in all and one flat tyre on their car.

After members enjoyed morning tea and a chat, Darryl Nelson was our main speaker and told us about his life. He worked at Millichamp’s then started his own nursery at Rakaia growing trees.

Several years later they sold the nursery and purchased the Commodore Motel Lodge in Ashburton.

Later they built a new house. Darryl joined the Fire Brigade in Rakaia and then transferred to Ashburton. He has been involved in the brigade for many years and has many medals. Also involved in scouting, was a District Councillor and has been Deputy Mayor. President of the Plains Museum. He spoke about being on the council and explained how money is spent. He is no longer on the council. Darryl answered a selection of questions from members and was thanked by Deb Ellery.

Next meeting will be held Monday March 27.

Arthur read the roll call and apologies and a clip board for the Red Puppy Appeal was circulated by Barry who thanked members for their participation in the Heart Week Appeal.

1st V.P. Jo reported on the Charity Market held at the Racecourse and thanked members and partners for the effort they put in to making this a successful project.

He also spoke on the forthcoming Truck & Machinery Show in conjunction with the Wheels Week Parade that members are involved with, as marshalling stewards.

Lion Jan gave an in-depth audio visual presentation of the work of the Lions Club International

Foundation and the many projects they sponsor throughout the world. i.e. Sight First; Measles Immunisation and Disaster Relief an area NZ earthquake relief has benefited from in recent years.

Bob introduced Nancy Winter who gave a talk on her childhood and growing up with her siblings, the first quadruplets born in NZ and her life and hardships in Caversham, Dunedin from 1935 onwards.

Very little help was available to families with multiple births but the community helped in any way they could. Considering the hardships the family had a happy childhood.

She spoke of her life-long interests in tap dancing, music and theatre which continued on her travels from Dunedin to Timaru and then to Ashburton.

Nancy was thanked by Gwenda who presented her with a certificate of appreciation.

Rippa rugby rise continues

Another increase in numbers for the 2017 Schools Rippa Rugby competition is another good result for the future of rugby in the Mid Canterbury region.

The competition, which has grown in size each year since its inception, will again play host to a large number of students from across the region with 38 teams entered in this year’s competition.

And for Mid Canterbury Rugby’s Rugby Development Officer,

Jason Ree it’s positive.

“It’s awesome to see continual growth in the number of kids taking part,” Ree said.

Ree spends a good portion of his time working with schools and educating them about rugby and his input at the school level is undoubtedly a factor in the rise of the schools’ Rippa Rugby competition.

“I’d like to think that was the case for sure, but it also appeals to a lot of families and kids because it is a non-competitive version of the game, we don’t

have the shouting and cheering on the sidelines that you might see at a Saturday game and the focus of it is more about the kids enjoying themselves while playing rugby.”

The competition runs for five weeks with teams split into three divisions, Years 3 and 4, Years 5 and 6 and Years 7 and 8 and begins next Tuesday night at the Ashburton Showgrounds from 5.45pm.

Another pleasing aspect of this year’s event is also the rise in the number of girls playing.

Restrictions are set for teams entering the competition that they must have at least three girls in the team with two on the paddock at all times.

“There are a lot of avenues for girls to explore with rugby nowadays, from rippa through to sevens and even the fifteens game and we are seeing a real growth in interest from them which is great.”

The competition is also a good kick start for many young players before the full rugby season gets under way.

England’s future playmaker prefers to be known by his first name. “I am just Jacob,” he says. That’s because his surname carries with it a formidable expectation – Umaga.

Wasps’ 18-year-old prodigy was born in Harrogate but his family have a far-away rugby pedigree.

His uncle Tana captained the All Blacks when they thrashed the Lions 3-0 on their last visit to New Zealand, and his father Mike represented Samoa before relocating the family to this country, the Daily Mail reported.

Now, Jacob is forging his own path towards Test recognition.

He played in England Under 20s’ recent Six Nations victories over France, Wales and Italy – starting the last two at No 10 – and scored three tries for Wasps in the AngloWelsh Cup this season.

He has grown up being known as the son and nephew of established figures but now he is making a name for himself.

“A few people put more pressure on me because of the name,” Umaga told Sportsmail.

“For me, I am just Jacob, I don’t really use my second name. People think, ‘He’s Tana’s nephew, he is going to be this or that’. My uncle was a great player so there is a lot of pressure.

“If I can just be myself that is the best way to go about it. That last Lions tour is the best memory I have of him, but probably not the Brian O’Driscoll thing (the controversial “spear tackle” by Umaga and Keven Mealamu)!

“I didn’t really get to watch him play because we didn’t have the TV channels back then. Now I have moved to centre a little bit I can look on YouTube at how he played and how my dad played to pick up tips from them.”

This is an English lad who is proud of his distant heritage. The dreadlocks provide a visible link to family connections in New Zealand and the Pacific. Jacob also actively seeks to expand his knowledge of Polynesian culture.

“I was born here but I have that background,” he said.

Umaga’s background is revealed in his allegiances too. Growing up, he didn’t support a rugby union team, but as someone who played both codes, he was a fan of Bradford Bulls in league – in an era when they had the Polynesian clout of Lesley Vainikolo, Tevita Vaikona and Shontayne Hape.

His union idols are Kiwis like Dan Carter and Carlos Spencer. He will prepare for games by watching YouTube clips of Jerry Collins’ big hits or Benji Marshall side-stepping through defences.

He began playing aged four, for Old Brodleians in Hipperholme in West Yorkshire, and was often a match-day mascot at Rotherham when his dad represented the club.

As Mike Umaga ventured into coaching, Jacob spent evenings and weekends at various National League clubs. He was never short of advice.

Now Jacob is out there running the show while Mike watches on and offers guidance.

And thousands of miles away, uncle Tana will be following his progress with pride.

Roncalli’s first wicket fell in the first over of the chase and then at regular intervals; only two batsmen reached double figures and they were all out for 77 in the 17th over. Graham took four wickets and Gareth Hunt three, with Harry McMillan contributing two. Ashcoll advances in the Gillette competition to play a Christchurch qualifier.

Nationals spots up for grabs

A spot at the National Age Group Championships is up for grabs for six Ashburton swimmers heading north this weekend.

The members of the Jennian Homes Ashburton Swim Team will be competing at the Divi-

sion Two competition in Rotorua from Saturday up against more than 470 swimmers from 98 clubs from throughout New Zealand.

The competition, which is a level down from the National Age Group Champs, provides a gateway for swimmers to earn qualification to step up to the

next level and potentially earn themselves a ticket to the Nationals in Wellington late in March. For three of the Ashburton contingent, it will be the first major competition they have competed in.

Josh Giles, Leigh Harrison and Blake Farr will all line up for the first time while Andrew

Peel and Isabelle Wilson competed at the same event last year in Invercargill. The sixth member of the team travelling north this weekend is Aimee Elliott.

The championships this weekend are held from Saturday through to Monday at the Rotorua Aquatic Centre.

‘No complacency from Warriors’ – Kearney Warriors coach Stephen Kearney is confident there will be no complacency from his side on Sunday, as the Auckland club kicks off their season against the lowly rated Newcastle Knights.

The Knights only tasted victory once last season and head into the first round on an 18 match losing streak.

The Novocastrians have also endured a difficult pre-season, with key play maker Jarrod Mullen provisionally suspended after returning a positive drug test for anabolic steroids.

Newcastle will be massive outsiders, but just the kind of banana skin that has proved perilous for the Warriors in the past.

“We need to make sure we get our game right and have a real respect for Newcastle and what they can do,” said head coach Kearney. “We have set ourselves a certain expectation throughout the year on how we prepare and how we perform.”

As if to remind his troops, Kearney indicated he was wary of the Knights, who beat the Raiders 44-0 in their final preseason trial.

Former Southern Stars pace bowler Sarah Coyte has announced her retirement from all forms of cricket, effective immediately.

Coyte, 25, took 100 wickets in all forms of cricket for Australia since her debut in 2010, playing 81 matches in the international Test, one-day and Twenty20 arenas.

However she opted to knock back her Cricket Australia contract last summer as she battled with personal issues, and on Tuesday stood down from South Australian commitments. “I am going home to Sydney to be close to my family and restore some balance to my life,” Coyte said.

markers and Mark (Purdon) had to re-balance her and come again on the outside.

“She displayed enormous sprint and tenacity to get up and collar Petacular. We are very proud of her. We would love to win the Northern Oaks this Friday.

“We know we have got the horse-power to do it,” Breckon said.

The Breckon-Purdon combination have nailed the Northern Oaks previously when Twist And Twirl won in 3:21 even in 2012.

Tania Dalton passed away yesterday after her life support was turned off on Tuesday.

Netball world in mourning Silver Ferns netballer and Sky TV commentator Tania Dalton, who died yesterday, was one of life’s “Pied Pipers”, recalls former national team manager Sheryl Wells.

Dalton, 45, suffered an internal carotid artery aneurysm while playing touch rugby last Thursday and was rushed to hospital, bleeding from the nose and mouth.

She spent most of the weekend in critical condition, life support was switched off on Tuesday afternoon and she finally passed away yesterday morning, leaving behind husband Duane Dalton and children Tayla, Charlie and Matt.

Wells said news of Dalton’s death has been met with shock and disbelief among the New Zealand netball fraternity.

“She was just a much-loved person and will be dearly, dearly missed in the netball community and in many other communities – she was involved in everything.”

Wells, who managed the Silver

Ferns 1993-2004, said Dalton was renowned for her fun-loving nature, and joked she was a bit of a handful to manage at times.

“I actually used to say to her ‘Tania, you taught me everything I know about managing’, because I always had to be a step ahead of her,” said Wells. “She was a lot of fun.

“She was a Pied Piper, like a gatherer of people. Whenever you saw Tania, there were always a group of people around her, usually laughing, because she was so much fun and had a gift of making everyone feel special.”

When it was game time, however, Dalton was all business, whether she was on the court or on the bench.

Wells said Dalton played a small, but crucial role in New Zealand’s tense win over Australia in the 2003 World Cup final, helping settle the team when Temepara Bailey was famously sent off the court for two centre passes late in the final quarter.

With Bailey off the court, the Ferns were forced to have a quick reshuffle of positions to ensure there was a player to take the centre pass.

“When Temepara, much to our dismay and shock, was stood down, Lesley [Rumball] knew straight away to come to the sideline and Tania was quickly on her feet, picking up the spare centre bib beside me, and went over to Lesley to attach the bib and gave her a little ‘go well, Les’.

“Back Lesley marched to the centre circle and the rest is history,” said Wells. “She was absolutely fantastic on the sideline – she was like my assistant manager at that stage.”

Broadcaster Bernadine OliverKerby, who has been friends with Dalton for more than 20 years, said the former Silver Fern was held in high regard in the North Shore community.

“She was the unofficial mayor of the North Shore, I reckon. The volume of people she knew and

cared about was staggering,” said Oliver-Kerby.

“She was always genuinely interested in other people. She knew if you’d had a sick kid, or just got back from holiday or had a sporting trial – she would always follow up and see how it went.”

Netball New Zealand chief executive Jennie Wyllie said the entire netball community was in shock and deeply saddened following the news.

“On behalf of the netball community, we extend our deepest sympathies to Duane [Tania’s husband] and their family at this extremely difficult time,” Wyllie said.

“Tania was a true competitor on the court who showed a passion and love for the game. She was respected by team-mates and opponents across world netball, and was much-loved off the court.

“She will always be in our hearts.”

Satterthwaite hoping to create history All eyes will be on Amy Satterthwaite at Mount Manganui tomorrow as the White Ferns look to end an 18-year ODI hoodoo against Australia in the Rose Bowl series.

Satterthwaite is in a purple patch of form with the bat and is chasing her fifth consecutive one-day international ton as New Zealand seeks to tie up the three-match series with a second straight win.

She fought off cramps to craft

an unbeaten 102 as the White Ferns pulled off the second biggest run chase in women’s cricket history, recording a five-wicket win in the first clash of the threematch Rose Bowl series at Eden Park last Sunday.

Backing up from the Twenty20 series victory over their TransTasman rivals, a one-day series victory would be extremely significant for the White Ferns, who haven’t claimed the Rosebowl

since 1999. After 14 defeats and a drawn series, it looks like that drought could soon be over if the burgeoning Kiwi side continue their excellent recent performances.

But Satterwaithe and White Ferns captain Suzy Bates will be keys to an historic success.

New Zealand had never chased down more than 267 to win a match but Bates got them off to a flying start in Auckland, mix-

ing power and innovation as she raced through to 55 before she was dismissed.

Satterthwaite initially struggled for rhythm before taking the game away from Australia and hitting the match-winning runs.

Australia is desperate to halt the losing slide against the White Ferns.

The third match of the series is also set for the Mount on Sunday.

‘Thor’ on the bench Taniela Tupou, the Reds prop known as the “Tongan Thor”, has been named on the reserves bench for his team’s match against the Force after serving his two-week ban for headbutting Liam Messam.

The 20-year-old Tupou, who attended Auckland’s Sacred Heart College, committed the act against the Chiefs captain in a match at the Brisbane Global 10s tournament, and subsequently missed a pre-season match and the Reds’ victory over the Sharks at Suncorp Stadium. It was a “silly act”, according to Reds coach Nick Stiles.

The dual Commonwealth Games gold medallist has drawn the curtain on her nine-year international career at the age of 26. ‘No one has spoken to Foran’ The door has been left ajar for Kieran Foran at Brisbane despite Wayne Bennett dismissing speculation linking the playmaker to the NRL club in 2018.

Reports have claimed Foran has emerged as an option to replace Brisbane’s Dragonsbound halfback Ben Hunt next year.

It is believed Foran saw master coach Bennett as the ideal man to get the troubled superstar’s life back on track.

But it seems it is news to Bennett.

“That’s a media story. No one at this club has spoken to Kieran Foran or his manager,” the Brisbane coach said yesterday.

“Nor have we been approached by him or his management.

“I am not going to go on any more about Kieran.”

But asked if he would be interested in Foran, Bennett said: “We are always interested in quality players”.

Auckland-born Foran has already been linked to Brisbane before even playing a game for his new club New Zealand Warriors.

Foran – on a one-year contract in New

Zealand – has been cleared by the NRL to make his comeback for the Warriors in round three.

The Kiwi playmaker quit Parramatta midway through 2016, less than a year into a four-season deal, before checking into rehabilitation.

The 26-year-old was hospitalised due to a prescription drug overdose following the breakdown of his relationship with his long-term partner and mother of his children.

He also came under fire for his friendly relationship with former brothel owner Eddie Hayson, who has been linked to an on-going police investigation into match fixing.

For the record, Foran’s camp have been coy on the playmaker’s future.

“He has not spoken to a single club about 2018,” Foran’s advisor, lawyer Don MacKinnon, told NZME. “His priority is entirely on getting ready for the Warriors in 2017 and having a successful year.”

Hunt still battling for justice Kiwi UFC fighter Mark Hunt is preparing for his next date in the octagon with Dutchman Alistair Overeem this weekend, still fuming over the ongoing legal battle with his employers.

Hunt faces Overeem at UFC209 in Las Vegas on Monday (NZ time), while accusing the Ultimate Fighting Championship over pitting him against “drug cheats”.

His last outing resulted in a loss to controversial former wrestler Brock Lesner, who subsequently failed two post-event drug tests, but was allowed to keep most of his winner’s purse and will be free to resume his career in July.

Hunt is furious that he has been lined up against Overeem, who also brings a chequered drugs record to the match-up,

but still has five fights left on his UFC contract and is not in a position to turn this one down.

Overeem returned a lopsided testosterone result in the build-up to a bout against then-world heavyweight champion Junior Dos Santos in 2012.

As a result, the Nevada State Athletic Commission suspended his licence for nine months.

Hunt and Overeem also have some personal history – both are former K1 fighters and faced each other in the new-defunct Dream promotion in Japan.

Overeem secured a first-round submission and is currently ranked third in the UFC heavyweight division, four spots ahead of Hunt.

Sport Life ban expected Tim Simona will reportedly be banned from the NRL for life for breaching gambling rules. The Wests Tigers centre is being investigated by the league and NSW police over reported allegations he was involved in placing bets on opposition players.

The 25-year-old, who’s stood down from playing and training, was issued with a notice to cancel his registration by the NRL last month.

The NRL forbids players placing bets on their own matches and News Corp Australia reports Simona’s alleged indiscretions will cost him his NRL career.

There was plenty of action on the waters of Lake Hood on the weekend, especially at the Water Ski Lake Hood Aquafest event.

A large contingent of skiers from across the South Island took part in the three-event competition with near-perfect conditions on Saturday leading to some stunning personal

bests across the board.

The undoubted highlight however was the pending national sub-juniors record set by 10-year-old, Sam Bainbridge from North Canterbury in which he cleared three bouys on a 14.25 metre rope at 49 kilometres.

That effort alongside others personal bests was enough to see Sam claim the Aquafest junior trophy which was accu-

mulated from scores over two rounds.

Local skier, Emily Milner, also picked up personal bests including great efforts in tricks and jumps.

Novice skiers, Carter Stewart, Angus Donaldson and Ricu Van Zeyl stepped up and had a crack at the tournament level and produced good results as well – a good sign for the future.

In the senior event for the

men, Karl Donaldson claimed honours with the day’s top score, holding off the challenge of twin-brothers, Hugh and George who finished second equal with the same scores.

Hugh produced the tournament’s top scores in both tricks and jumps.

Another highlight of the event was the huge personal best 4-bouy jump by Leighton Hood.
