Everest exhilarating and brutal By Linda CLarke

Blackcurrant grower Michael Read was on the tractor, mid-grind, in 2013 when he made a decision to “do something” with his life. He took up mountain climbing and 13 days ago was standing on top of Mt Everest. The tallest peak in the world was number five on his list of seven major summits, and follows Elbrus in Russia, Kilimanjaro in Africa, Aconcagua in South America, and Denali in Alaska. Back on the flat land of Mid Canterbury, 76 metres above sea level, there is plenty of oxygen. That wasn’t the case at Camp Three, altitude 7200m, on Everest, where his team perched on the Lhotse Face, tucked into their tents. The next day they departed for High Camp on the South Col, then on that night for the top of Everest. When dawn broke, Read would be just the second person to stand on top of the world that day. He and guide Lydia Brady, plus

an Australian climber and two Sherpas, spent about 20 minutes at the summit, during which time he took photos and memorised the view, careful not to expose skin for more than a minute. The temperature was around -45°C and more climbers were about to take their place. It has been a record climbing season for Everest this year with around 715 people making the summit. An unusually long period of settled weather gave mountaineering teams an 11-day stretch to complete their climbs, instead of a three or four-day window that is often the case. For Read, it was both exhilarating and brutal. He slept in a tent near the body of a dead climber, he helped in the rescue of a Sherpa hit by a falling rock, he climbed past the bodies of others who had perished in seasons past. Some climbers suffer post-traumatic stress after their Everest adventure and even home now, the enormity of his accomplishment

is still sinking in. Read, his brother Steve and parents Kerry and Margaret farm at Hinds and his family was able to watch the Adventure Consultants’ climbing party as it set out on the eight-day round trek from Base Camp to the summit and back. Read’s journey had begun much earlier though. “I was sitting on the tractor one day and I was thinking I will be 65 and still on the tractor if I don’t get out and do something … and it scared me a wee bit.” He went home, jumped on the internet and came across mountaineering. He decided, in 2013, to do the Seven Summit Challenge and set about learning the technical skills needed to stay alive in some of the most challenging and inhospitable territory on the planet. For fitness, he ran up Mt Somers and Mt Peel. He advanced his climbing craft on the job with Adventure Consultants as he began ticking off the summits. It’s been a huge commitment,

I was the second person on top of the world that day.” The team had departed the High Camp at South Col about 9pm and climbed with head torches through the night, to be at the summit at 4.05am. On the way down, their party was involved in the rescue of a Sherpa from another team, seriously injured by falling rock. The man was helicoptered off the mountain for medical treatment. Read said the expedition had taken a huge toll on his body and he lost 13kg of muscle from his already-lean frame. Death on the mountain was a constant reality. “We saw the whole range, from people with frostbite to people who had passed away. It was quite shocking to see … it was tough and it was quite confronting.” Read is back on the farm recovering and looking at two more names on the list – Carstensz Pyramid in Western Papua and Mt Vinson in Antarctica.

physically and financially. “And part of the negotiation with the family was that I go with a reputable company.” Climbing Everest was a 63-day mission that started with a flight from New Zealand to Kathmandu late March and then a smaller hop to Lukla. The group spent 12 days trekking to Base Camp, where the nine climbers that would attempt the summit, with the help of guides and Sherpas, acclimatised to the lack of oxygen at altitude. As part of the acclimatisation process, the group made two excursions to camps higher up the mountain so guides could assess the climbers’ ability and body reaction to the altitude. Read said they were ready to summit when the time came, though only six of the nine ultimately made it. “There were a huge number of people on the mountain, but because we had an 11-day window it spread the climbing teams out. We did have to do a number of manoeuvres to get past a couple

The Warehouse Ashburton have a new request for their customers: leave your smoking habit at the gate. The store has just become the first Warehouse in New Zealand to declare their carpark a complete “no smoking” zone, in a move which coincided with World Smokefree Day yesterday. New signage has been put up, and promoters were on Thursday celebrating World Smokefree Day with a sausage sizzle and giveaways – including balloons and bubble-blowing kits to exercise healthy sets of lungs. It’s hoped the new no smoking signage will deter smokers from indulging their habit and risking their health and wellbeing, but also prevent litter and secondhand smoke, Cancer Society of New Zealand health promoter Mandy Casey said. “It’s not just about the smokers

themselves, but their kids and all the other effects.” For Mid Canterbury Community and Public Health Promoter Carly McDowell, The Warehouse had made “a great step” towards the country’s target of smokefree by 2025. “We want the next generation to grow up completely smokefree,” she said. “And we’re hoping other carparks will around New Zealand will follow on and become smokefree too,” Casey said. Rangitata MP Andrew Falloon agreed that it was great to see local businesses getting in behind the target. “It’s important we do everything we can to persuade young people to not take up the habit,” he said. Recent figures released by the government show that less than 14 per cent of New Zealanders smoke on a daily basis – which equates to 5 per cent or 175,000 people fewer than a decade ago.

Te Awamutu couple Erinna and Chris Lane were getting pretty sick of the negative discourse around New Zealand’s child abuse rates. It’s the kind of TV content that just makes you want to change the channel, Chris said – but what if the discussion shifted from one of hopelessness, to one full of hope? So one year ago, the family packed up their lives, boarded a bright yellow school bus, and set off on an epic road trip around the country to try and change people’s minds. Backed by an army of grassroots support from their home town, the bus set off with onboard documentary-making equipment, two years’ worth of planning, newly acquired truck licences and their four children – Joshua, Noah, Lachie and Theo. The iconic bus has since voyaged from Northland to Southland and this week they rolled to a halt in Tinwald for a spot of filming with the Mid Canterbury Boxing Academy. The project, Erinna explained, aims to address child abuse by exploring what people do to make a positive difference in their communities and inspiring others to follow suit. “Child abuse is something in all communities,” she said. “In our own community, there had been a bit of talk over the fence and a few occasions we were told some stuff … but ultimately we found it really frustrating that nobody does anything. “What we’ve now found is that people really do care, but most ordinary people don’t know what they can do to help.” The Mid Canterbury Boxing Academy are one group making a difference in the Ashburton community, she said, by creating a safe place full of hope and belonging for children. “They’re based on a model which we filmed in Wellington, where they use boxing as a tool to cultivate respect, values and rela-

tionships. They’re working with children, but what they do helps when those kids become grownups, which is when the really serious problems can begin.” The Lanes have also looked at the positive contributions of performing arts groups, university professors, sports groups and individuals with first-hand experiences of child abuse. “We’ve interacted with some really interesting people. It’s definitely a passion project,” Erinna said. While there have been some tough days on the journey – not least waking up with ice inside the

bus in Ashburton, the Lanes said road tripping was amazing for their own relationships. “I guess it’s pretty weird spending 24 hours a day with your own family … but it’s been easier than we thought. I guess that’s something we’re trying to promote, doing stuff with your own family. It’s about journeying with your kids though life. Kids aren’t just something on the side, they need to be valued.” It has been a trip of firsts for the young family – first time touching snow, first time catching fish, and first time seeing spots in New Zealand’s wonderful backyard.

“Some of our best stories for the documentary actually come from the kids,” said Chris, “We’ll be parked up by a beach and the kids will wander off and get talking to someone and tell them what we’re about, and suddenly there’s another great story to tell.” The Lanes have two months left on the road, and hope their documentary film will be completed by next May. However, they’re eyeing up one more ambitious project in October to reinforce their message about child abuse. “We want people to link arms right across New Zealand, ac-

Dozens of Mid Canterbury school uniforms were visible among the swathes of students pouring into Horncastle Arena on Wednesday. Locals honing their leadership skills were among those to attend the National Young Leaders’ Day (NYLD) and leave with brains full of inspiration and encouragement. At Ashburton Intermediate School, eight school leaders, along with principal Brent Gray, attended. Gray said it was a positive day of thinking and talking for all involved. Six guest speakers ranged from Keeping Up with the Kaimanawa’s star Amanda Wilson to politician Jono Naylor, TV star Riley Hathaway and musician Vince Harder, who spoke and performed for the hundreds of students.

Gray said the school leaders will be taking valuable inspiration back to their positions in the school. Our Lady of the Snows School school leaders also attended the event alongside senior teacher Georgia Annear. “The children loved listening to Riley speak, as last term our topic was The Ocean,” she said. “We had previously been watching her videos and exploring the Young Ocean Explorers’ website. How cool to then hear her speak to us.” The prominent theme spoken about by all speakers was that you have to be brave to be different, and that you should always stay true to who you are. The main theme of the event this year was “Me Whakaro Rangatira” or “think like a leader”. NYLD is held annually in Christchurch and five other venues around New Zealand, and 110,000 students have attended since the event launched in 2001.

Synlait, Westland raise forecasts

sor Fonterra on May 23 raised its forecast for the 2017/18 season by 20 cents to $6.75/kgMS and announced an opening price forecast for 2018/19 of $7/kgMS, saying global demand for dairy products “is expected to remain strong” especially in China and for butter and anhydrous milk fat in particular. Synlait and Westland were both also positive about the outlook for dairy products. “The increase to $6.65 kgMS for this season reflects an increase in dairy commodity prices since our

last update in January 2018,” Synlait managing director John Penno said. “We’re positive about next season but, like us, farmers should remain cautious because small changes in market dynamics can have a major influence on milk price.” Synlait will confirm its final milk price for the 2017/18 season with its annual result in early September. The NZX-listed company last traded at $11.25, with its shares having surged 182 per cent over the past year.

Westland chair Pete Morrison said the company’s second-biggest dairy co-operative was seeing improved sales and a better outlook, as well as a “much improved performance” from its Infant and Toddler Nutrition (ITN) and UHT plants, while its consumer butter sales were “a star performer”. Westland said its decision to enter the New Zealand retail consumer butter market with its Westgold brand in August 2016 had paid off, as it had now sold more than two million packs and its brand was out-selling all other gourmet butters in New Zealand combined, and starting to reach sale levels comparative with more established brands. Morrison said butter was expected to continue to be a good export earner for Westland in the 2018/19 season. “We see robust demand for butter in all sectors growing further in the coming year, with grass-fed growth showing even further potential,” he said. “Westland is in a great position to take advantage of the growing

Northland EV advocate Joe Camuso says this is a great opportunity for Whangarei people to get behind the wheel of an EV. “Car sharing could also allow two-car families to potentially own one and share one when needed,” Camuso said. “Owning a car comes with a lot of intrinsic costs, such as rego, WOF, insurance, fuel and maintenance. EV shared fleet on the move A company which set up one of the world’s first electric car-sharing fleets in Christchurch hopes to do the same in Whangarei. At a meeting at Northland Regional Council this week, Yoogo explained how it targeted big employers, urging them to give up some of their fleet cars and share with a wider electric vehicle (EV) pool fleet. The concept was launched in Christchurch in February with 12 corporate customers including Environment Canterbury, the district health board, Meridian Energy, Christchurch Airport and private firms. Yoogo now has 100 EVs and 100 chargers at eight hubs in Christchurch, centred mostly around the CBD but also at the airport, and charges a business rate of $12 an hour for the use of an EV. The costs are offset by also allowing the public to hire the cars — at $14.50 an hour. Per-kilometre costs kick in after an initial free 180km. Yoogo general manager Kirsten Corson said fleet sharing, with no capital expenditure and no monthly fee, is attractive to small businesses unable to afford latemodel, five-star-safety cars. But the gains also extend to curbing climate-change emissions. She says the fleet in Christchurch has already saved 10 tonnes of carbon dioxide. International research shows a share car generally displaces between five and 15 private cars. The idea for Whangarei is to have three or four hubs, with two to three EVs per hub. Corson told the meeting the cars are groomed every two weeks

South Island dairy processors Synlait Milk and Westland Milk Products have raised their forecast milk payment levels to their farmer suppliers for the coming season, following a similar move last month by larger rival Fonterra Co-operative Group. Rakaia-based Synlait raised its forecast milk price for the 2017/18 season which officially ended on Thursday to $6.65 per kilogram of milksolids, and said the average premium payment of 13 cents would lift the total payout to $6.78/kgMS. for young champion rower

Ask anyone who knows rowing, and they’d probably be willing to put money on Veronica Wall becoming an elite world champion rower one day. But the 18-year-old Ashburton girl isn’t thinking that far ahead just yet. Right now she’s focused on the next challenge that awaits her – the Junior World Rowing Championships in the Czech Republic. Erin Tasker reports.

eronica Wall walked out of the gates of Ashburton College for the final time last week, not really knowing what the future holds. Many have the 18-year-old rower pegged as a future world champion, and after winning 18 gold medals at club and school level over the past four years, that’s a realistic possibility. But Wall isn’t setting her sights on being top of the world, or rowing for New Zealand at the Olympics. Yes, it’d be nice to be world champion or win gold at the Olympics one day, but Wall isn’t getting ahead of herself. She’s taking things one step at a time. This weekend Wall is off to Lake

Karapiro, near Cambridge, where she’ll spend the next few weeks in an intensive camp before heading off to the Junior World Rowing Championships in the Czech Republic. That’s as far as she’s letting herself think right now. It’s her third shot at the junior worlds, but the first time she’ll compete in the singles. Two years ago, she was part of the girls’ quad which finished fourth at the junior worlds at Rotterdam, and last year she was in a double which finished sixth in the C final at the junior worlds in Lithuania. On this next step on her path, Wall has got a couple of familiar faces to keep her company. Fellow Ashburton rower Mollie Gibson is

also part of the New Zealand team heading to the junior worlds, while Wall’s dad – Justin Wall – is the team’s single and quad coach. Wall said she couldn’t have got to where she is on her own. Ashburton College’s staff and students have been incredibly supportive over the years, as has the Ashburton Rowing Club, but much of the credit for her success has to go to her family. Both of her parents grew up rowing and her mum, Charlotte Cox, was also a top cyclist. “They both personally know what it’s like trying to do really well in sport,” Wall said. Wall wants to keep getting better – that’s her immediate goal. So,

when she returns from the Czech Republic she’ll base herself in Christchurch and row out of the Southern Regional Performance Centre. She plans to find herself a job for the remainder of the year before heading to university where she plans on studying a science. Just like rowing, science could well have been in her blood with mum a doctor and dad a dentist, but Wall isn’t sure exactly what career path she’ll choose just yet, she just knows she needs one because sport doesn’t last forever. Wall is finishing high school later than her peers. A Year 13 student at Ashburton College last year, Wall returned this year as a Year 14 student, a move which allowed

her to compete at another Maadi Cup – New Zealand secondary school rowing’s pinnacle event – and bring more medals back to her school, and also keep her mind ticking over while she prepared for her next big rowing challenge. Wall started rowing in Year 9. Her parents moved to Ashburton around the time Lake Hood was being established, so for as long as Wall can remember, the Ashburton Rowing Club has been a part of her life. “I just kind of got into it because we were always being dragged down to Twizel to regattas anyway,” Wall said. Instead of being given jobs to do on those trips, Wall decided to give

the sport a go herself, and after her first year never dreamed that she’d be able to one day go on to achieve what she has. In her first appearance at Maadi there were no A finals made. “We made a couple of B finals and we were chuffed at that,” she said. The next year though, she returned, and won her first 16s single title. From there, she just kept winning. Yes, she has 18 school and club level medals from the last four years, but that’s not what it’s about for her. “You don’t really think about numbers, you’re always moving forward to another goal,” she said. Wall’s goals don’t stretch too far

out into the future. Right now, her goal is to work as hard as she can over the next few weeks at Karapiro and have fun, rather than eyeing up a time or a placing in the Czech Republic. At last year’s nationals Wall went under the current junior world record so she knows she’s in with a chance of winning a medal, but being in a single scull, it’s all on you and if you’re not completely on your game both physically and mentally come race day, anything can happen. “It’s about training smarter and you make goals and work towards them. It’s self-improvement rather than going out to win.” If she gets the chance to go to

the Olympics one day, that’ll be great. “Once you’ve been around sport like that you know how much work goes into it, so I think if I wanted to do something like that I would just fully throw myself into doing as much as I can rowing-wise, but it’s also about what’s going to make me happiest in the long run.” At this stage, Tokyo 2020 isn’t on her radar. There’s a lot of water to go under the bridge before then. “I never really sit down and think I want to go to the Olympics, it’s just more incremental steps,” Wall said. “Going to the Olympics would be cool but it’s not like I have an Olympic team poster on my wall or anything.

“I just think it’s important to be a balanced person rather than having all your eggs in the one basket.” If she wanted, she probably could have gone to America on a university scholarship once she finished school, but that isn’t her right now. Right now, she’s committed to New Zealand, where the pathways and infrastructure to get to the top, are in place. Wall is a girl who has got her head screwed on right. She loves rowing and so long as she loves rowing, she’ll continue to do it, but she also knows that sport can’t last forever and wants to be prepared for whatever life has to throw at her in the future.

Is it time to give something new a go? I

n one way or another, we’re all a little bit like Michael Read. One of our feature reads in today’s edition of the Guardian (P2), Read is actually something we should all strive to be, if we’re already not. There’s times in all of our lives where we are sitting on the tractor, wondering what to do next with our lives. Or sometimes, not even what to do next – but just what to do now. It’s all too easy to get stuck into the modern workings of everyday life. To go from start to finish in a day and then turn around and do it all again the next day. That’s when life gets bland. Then life gets boring. And no-one wants that for

themselves. We’re not suggesting that everyone jumps off their tractor and goes away to climb Mt Everest – that’s a little bit special. But surely you have all thought about doing something completely out there, even if it is just to break up the monotonous undertone of your life. That big life change or moment could be anything. Jumping out of a perfectly

good airplane, swimming with sharks, or something as seemingly small as getting a family pet. They all add a little something more to your life and when things are as straight up and down as a ruler, it can only be a good thing to introduce new things. What Michael Read has achieved in such a short space of time is quite remarkable. He’s gone from sitting on his tractor in 2013 to now having climbed five of the world’s highest peaks, including the mecca of all mountains, Everest. The amount of self-satisfaction that must wash over him every morning when he wakes up and thinks back on what he’s done would be justification enough for the blood, sweat and tears that

experiment began. In 2002, a fire broke out at Buckingham Palace, forcing the evacuation of hundreds of people and marring the four-day celebration of Queen Elizabeth II’s 50 years on the throne. Ten years ago: The space shuttle Discovery linked up with the international space station, and the 10 space travellers immediately got ready to install the Japanese lab Kibo. Bo Diddley, 79, a founding father of rock ‘n’ roll, died in Archer, Florida, at age 79. Five years ago: Egypt’s highest

court ruled that the nation’s interim parliament was illegally elected, though it stopped short of dissolving the chamber immediately. One year ago: In a rambling press conference, embattled comedian Kathy Griffin said she was not afraid of Donald Trump and planned to keep making fun of him but maintained that she was sorry for a video that depicted her holding a likeness of the president’s severed, bloody head. has gone into achieving what he has. But Read is not alone in his actions. Here in Mid Canterbury there’s a long list of people who go out and do things that others would see as impossible. Think Greg Roadley and his Arctic adventure last year where he trekked across some of the most rugged terrain in the world or even a guy like Braden Currie who throws it all on the line and pushes his body to the absolute maximum, running, cycling, swimming and kayaking his way around some of the toughest courses in the world. Maybe it’s the flatness of the Canterbury Plains that brings this type of adventure-seeking

out in us. These are just ordinary people, from everyday walks of life – but they have a gene of extraordinary pumping through their veins that makes them put themselves out there. They’re vulnerable in the fact that they may fail in their endeavours, but they’re almost heroic in the fact that they succeed. So. if you’re sitting at your computer next week, grumpy at the world and bored of the straight up and down life, the challenge has been set. Push yourself a little further and try something you’ve always wanted to. You never know, it might just change your life.

Preaching the sermon of broken promises I

t is clear now that our local National Party MPs are part of a hypocritical propaganda machine that strips them of any free thought around current issues. Originally they vowed to ‘keep the government honest,’ but their ongoing political party press releases to this community through their so-called ‘opinion’ pages prove otherwise. Both Andrew Falloon and Amy Adams wrote recently the same message behind their magnificently manicured paragraphs. The message was simple, you can’t trust this new government, they won’t deliver because they won’t keep their promises. The fact that both of them delivered their almost identical opinions one after another could be argued that they are consistent in thought, however I will bet you an eyebrow wax, they had no choice and it was a case of follow the leader as Simon Bridges himself has being preaching the sermon of broken promises for a while. And this is why it is propaganda. Their tactic is to disperse a web of negativity to hopefully capture your thoughts and align them with their thinking. They will continue this for the next two and half years. That’s a long time to have a tantrum, but it will cease when they come back in power. That is one of the reasons they are hypocrites. At the moment the Government can’t keep its word and everything they do will bring us to ruin, but when we are in power everything will be fine

and you will be better off. The other reason their message is hypocritical is because there are too many broken promises to list that have come from the mouths of National

Party politicians. The Stuff website reported in 2011 10 broken promises by John Key and his government. How is that GST at 15 per cent working for you, this is John Key speaking about GST at 12.5 per cent – “National is not going to be raising GST. National wants to cut taxes, not raise taxes … what I am saying is if we do a half-decent job as a government at growing our economy I am confident that won’t be happening” So obviously they couldn’t even do a half-decent job as they raised GST to 15 per cent. Or what about asset sales? Again Key said, “I’m not interested in selling assets – I’m all about building assets”. That was 2008. In 2012 he fronted up and signalled the sale of key assets like our power companies. Shall I go on? Or who remembers the Northland byelection in 2015, when Winston Peters caught National with their pants down. In reaction to the unfavourable polls, National announces the building of 10 bridges for Northland, and then not surprisingly backtracked on it. Have a guess who made the original announcement as he was Minister of Transport at the time – Simon Bridges! Oh the cup of sarcasm I am about to reach for quivers with

anticipation. This is what makes the Year 10 Social Studies type writings of Amy and Andrew so predictable and un-informing to read. They are merely trotting out party propaganda. Where are their own opinions and thoughts? Where is the passionate personal voice persuasively prompting table thumping debate?! I wrote a piece a few years ago that harvested a response from the minister of education at the time. Or so you and I were led to believe. Later, a ministry staffer contacted me and confessed they were the author of the corrective letter published in this very paper. Dishonest? Maybe, but more a symptom of a tightly controlled political team that pulls the strings of its front line candidates. The Japanese have a saying, ‘the nail that sticks up will be hammered down’. This is one of the reasons for their uncompromising uniformity. I believe our local opposition MPs are in a similar position. For the next few years we will be subjected to carefully crafted prose, repeated so often that you will begin to believe it. This one promise the National Party will keep – expect more propaganda. YOUR VIEW Methamphetamine I am disappointed with the sensationalised, hand-picked and taken out of context caption clearly written on the back of a cigarette packet and splashed across today’s front page (Guardian, Friday, June 1) highlighting the recent lifting of the threshhold of which Housing New Zealand will decontaminate thousands of methamphetamine contaminated properties.

Is it good news for the vulnerable tenants currently on long waiting lists for healthy homes to be knowingly exposed to methamphetamine and is it good news for the contractors, my staff and friends who work in this environment to find out 20 years later of the health effects just like as happened in the past with asbestos and lead poisoning? Your “balanced” story took four days to publish and involved countless hours contacting one real estate agent to give one view,

Violence leaves 15 dead

More than a dozen people have died in shootings that erupted around Mother’s Day protests in Nicaragua but the government and human rights groups differ on who was to blame. The Nicaraguan Centre for Human Rights says at least 11 people died when marches this week were attacked “by the repressive police and shock forces” loyal to President Daniel Ortega, the latter a reference to pro-government youth groups. Francisco Diaz, the second in command of the national police, says there were 15 deaths nationwide, which he blamed on “criminal gangs”. The Mother’s Day marches were led by mothers of the victims of earlier protests but some ended with gunmen firing into crowds, sending thousands of demonstrators running for cover. An Associated Press photographer at last week’s march in Managua saw one person with a wound to the head carried off in a stretcher with a sheet covering his upper body, apparently dead. The new deaths put the overall death toll for more than a month of protests near 100. Shortly before the attacks, Ortega told supporters at a rally that he was committed to peace. Protests began in mid-April in response to changes to the social security system but expanded to call for Ortega’s exit. - AP

Baby cheetahs welcomed South Australia’s Monarto Zoo has welcomed four baby cheetahs into the family. The cubs born last week are healthy along with mother Kesho, keeper Jon Allon said. “At this early stage we are giving the new family complete privacy, and only monitoring developments through a security camera in the den,” he said. Cheetahs are classified as vulnerable and breeding programmes are critical to securing the future of the species. The gender of the cubs is yet to be determined and they will remain offlimits to the public for now to give the family time to bond. - AAP

US church settles with abuse victims The Archdiocese of St Paul and Minneapolis in the US state of Minnesota has agreed a $US210 million ($NZ299 million) settlement with 450 victims of clergy sexual abuse, a lawyer says. It is part of its plan for bankruptcy reorganisation, he said. Victims’ lawyer Jeff Anderson said the settlement was reached with the survivors and the archdiocese and includes accountability measures. The Minnesota Legislature in 2013 opened a three-year window in the statute of limitations that allowed people who had been sexually abused in the past to sue for damages. That resulted in hundreds of claims being filed against the archdiocese and led it to file for bankruptcy in 2015. The bankruptcy case proceeded slowly as lawyers argued over how much the archdiocese should have to pay. It reported its net worth was $US45 million. But lawyers for the victims maintained that the archdiocese’s true worth was over a billion, counting assets of its 187 Roman Catholic parishes, as well as schools, cemeteries and other church-related entities. The lawyers said those assets should be used to make more money available for victims. At least 15 Catholic dioceses or archdioceses across the US have filed for bankruptcy. - PA

Ed Sheeran has been named songwriter of the year at Britain’s prestigious Ivor Novello songwriting awards. The inescapable singer won the prize yesterday for his “exceptional body of work” in 2017, including his chart-topping album Divide. Sheeran’s hit The Shape of You took the prize for most-performed song of the year. Grime musician Stormzy won album of the year for his breakthrough Gang Signs and Prayer. The best contemporary song prize went to 19-year-old rapper Dave for the politically charged Question Time. The Pogues’ Shane MacGowan received an inspiration award, while Billy Bragg, Cathy Dennis and Billy Ocean were rewarded for career achievements. - NZME

Denmark drastic burqa ban Denmark joined some other European countries in deciding yesterday to ban garments that cover the face, including Islamic veils such as the niqab or burqa. In a 75-30 vote with 74 absentees, Danish lawmakers approved the law presented by the centre-right governing coalition. The government says that it is not aimed at any religions and does not ban headscarves, turbans or the traditional Jewish skull cap. However, the law is popularly known as the “Burqa Ban” and is mostly seen as being directed at the dress worn by some conservative Muslim women. Few Muslim women in Denmark wear full-face veils. Justice Minister Soeren Pape Poulsen said that it will be up to police officers to use their “common sense” when they see people violating the law that enters into force on August 1.

The law allows people to cover their face when there is a “recognisable purpose” like cold weather or complying with other legal requirements, such as using motorcycle helmets under Danish traffic rules. First-time offenders risk a fine of 1000 kroner ($NZ222). Repeat offences could trigger fines of up to 10,000 kroner or a jail sentence of up to six months. Anyone forcing a person to wear garments covering the face by using force or threats can be fined or face up to two years in prison. Austria, France and Belgium have similar laws. The justice ministry and the police now will write more detailed guidelines. Those “should be very concrete” as to what will be banned, said Bjoern Elmquist, a lawyer who has been a prominent opponent of the law. - AP

LeBlanc quits Top Gear Top Gear presenter Matt LeBlanc has announced he will quit the BBC Two motoring programme after its next series, saying the show’s workload left him little time to see his friends and family. “The time commitment and extensive travel required to present Top Gear takes me away from my family and friends more than I’m comfortable with,” said LeBlanc. “It’s unfortunate, but for these reasons I will not be continuing my involvement with the show. Peace talks resume North and South Korea yesterday resumed senior-level peace talks Seoul sees as an important step in building trust with Pyongyang amid a US-led diplomatic push to persuade the North to give up its nuclear weapons. The meeting at an inter-Korean border village follows a meeting in New York between US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and senior North Korean envoy Kim Yong Chol where they discussed a potential summit between President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. American delegations are also meeting with North Koreans in Panmunjom and Singapore as part of efforts to confirm the summit that may take place on June 12 in Singapore. South Korea plans to use yesterday’s meeting with the North to set up military talks on reducing tensions across their heavily armed border and Red Cross talks to resume reunions of families separated by the 1950-53 Korean War. The officials may also discuss setting up a liaison office in the North Korean border town of Kaesong, arranging a joint event to commemorate the “June 15 Declaration” for peace adopted after the first inter-Korean summit in 2000, and fielding combined teams in some sports at the Asian Games in August. South Korean President Moon Jae-in, who met with Kim Jong Un twice in the past two months, has said progress in inter-Korean reconciliation will be a crucial part of international efforts to resolve the nuclear standoff with North Korea because Pyongyang

The Queen marks 65 years since coronation After more than six decades in one job, most people would probably feel like retiring. Not the Queen. Today marks 65 years since her coronation in 1953, and while the Queen has been handing over more of her official duties to her eldest son and grandsons she shows no signs of wanting to retire. No major celebrations are planned to mark the anniversary, but the 92-year-old monarch will appear at five official engagements this month. She will mark her official birthday on June 9 with the annual Trooping the Colour parade in London, where more than 1400 officers, 200 horses and 400 musicians will perform in the Queen’s honour before she watches a fly past of Royal Air Force aircraft from the balcony of Buckingham Palace. A visit to Cheshire, reception for young leaders and church services are also in her diary for June. It’s been a busy year of milestone occasions for the Queen, with the arrival of her sixth great-grandchild Prince Louis in April, and the wedding of grandson Prince Harry and American actress Meghan Markle last month. She’s also preparing to celebrate the 70th birthday of her eldest son and heir, Prince Charles in November. The Queen in April urged Commonwealth leaders meeting in London to allow Charles to “one day” succeed her as head of the group of 53 nations, including Australia. The role is one the Queen has relished since she ascended the throne after the sudden death of her father King George VI in February 1952. She was just 27 when she was officially crowned in front of royalty and world leaders more than a year later on June 2, 1953. A bizarre car crash in the Sydney CBD left a man trapped inside a Porsche Carrera after the parked car was mounted by a Subaru yesterday. The incident happened outside the Hyatt Regency Sydney hotel, in the city’s CBD. A man had to be rescued from the Porsche after it was trapped inside, with the Subaru sitting on top of the black Carrera. It all happened when a valet was trying to park the Porsche. He was not injured in the incident, the hotel’s director of sales and marketing, Matthew Talbot, confirmed. - NZME

Elephant calf one One of the largest babies at Sydney’s Taronga Zoo, Jai Dee the elephant calf, will mark his first birthday with a celebratory feed. The Asian elephant was the zoo’s first calf in nearly seven years when he was born in late May 2017. He’ll be treated to a birthday feeding session at the zoo in front of visitors on Friday morning. Jai Dee, whose name means “good heart” in Thai, was the 10th elephant born in the past 11 years under a regional conservation breeding programme for Asian elephants in Australia. He was also the second calf for Pak Poon, who had a female calf in November 2010 named Tukta. - AAP

Mummified body NSW Police hope post-mortem results will provide some clues into the cause of death after a mummified body was found in an empty house on Sydney’s lower north shore. Cleaners sent to clear out the Greenwich property on Greendale Street made the gruesome discovery earlier this week. The occupant of the home died close to a year ago, and homicide detectives are working to identify the mummified body. It’s hoped the post-mortem examination will also reveal the gender and the cause of death. The death is being treated as suspicious, NSW Police said. - AAP

Today marks 65 years since the Queen’s coronation in 1953. was like as part of a BBC documentary. She joked about the perils of wearing the 1.3kg diamond-encrusted Imperial State Crown, and noted how she nearly got stuck when her royal robes brushed against the thick red carpet pile as she arrived at London’s Westminster Abbey for the coronation ceremony. “You can’t look down to read the speech, you have to take the speech up. Because if you did, your neck would break and it (the crown) would fall off,” the Queen quipped

A woman has been taken to hospital as firefighters continue to battle a blaze at a Melbourne factory. The woman, aged in her 20s, was taken to the Alfred Hospital just after 8am yesterday, after escaping the fire, at a disused factory on Greeves Street in St Kilda. She is in a stable condition suffering face, arm and leg injuries. Firefighters say the blaze was brought under control just before 9am, but they initially had difficulty getting inside. Several blocks of flats surrounding the factory were evacuated as a precaution and a community warning has been issued for smoke in the area. - AAP

Beef casserole Serves 4 600g chuck or gravy beef 1 onion, halved and sliced 2 medium carrots, sliced thickly 2T plain flour 3C beef stock 1t Worcestershire sauce 1T soy sauce 1T fresh thyme 2 bay leaves ■ Preheat the oven to 180°C. ■ Cut beef into 5cm cubes. Season with salt and pepper, add about 2T of oil and mix well. Heat a large frypan over a mediumhigh heat. Brown the beef in batches then place in a casserole dish. ■ Reduce heat in pan and sauté the onion and carrot in oil. Cook for 1-2 minutes, stirring occasionally. ■ Sprinkle in flour and stir until the vegetables are coated.

Rakaia are the only Mid Canterbury team still in the hunt for the title of the best country rugby team in Canterbury as the Combined Country Cup competition heads into its final stages this weekend. Rakaia are set to host Saracens at the Rakaia Domain today in one of four big quarter-finals, and after weeks of struggling with injuries they look set to put their strongest team so far this season out on to the paddock as they look to go one better than they did last season. Rakaia made the Combined Country Cup final last year but lost to Southbridge and while it was a loss that was still fresh in

their minds, they weren’t getting ahead of themselves. Rakaia coach Wayne Foxcroft is still taking it one game at a time and said his side still has a few kinks to iron out if they are to get their name on that trophy. Foxcroft said his side had started too slowly and conceded too many points in some of their matches, including the last two, and they can’t afford to do that against Saracens. Rakaia were down 29-14 against Kaiapoi last week before coming back to win and propel themselves to the top of the ladder in their section heading into the finals and earn themselves a home quarter-final. The week before that they had to fight back from 21-12 down

against Darfield. “There is always work to be done; a perfect game of rugby is yet to be played,” Foxcroft said. Just what Saracens would offer today, Rakaia didn’t really know. They played them last season, but Saracens sit far higher on the points table than they did in 2017, indicating they were a much different side this season. But whatever Saracens threw at them, Rakaia would be ready. “It’s not about them, it’s about us dictating to them what we are going to do,” Foxcroft said. He said his side had been hampered by injuries and were yet to show their full hand. But the side that would take to the Rakaia Domain today should be the closest they’d got to field-

ing their best team so far this season. Among the players due back today were Seta Koroitamana, returning from a shoulder injury, while Nete Caucau would also return from a two-week suspension following a red card for a high tackle. They were two players with the x-factor who could turn nothing into something and win a game for any side, Foxcroft said. A win today would earn Rakaia a home semi-final, but regardless of who won, the final would be held in either Ellesmere or North Canterbury as it was held in Mid Canterbury last year, Foxcroft said. In the day’s other quarterfinals Waihora would play Dar-

field, Prebbleton was to take on Lincoln and Southbridge was hosting Springston. While Rakaia were the only Mid Canterbury team still in the running for the big prize, for Mid Canterbury’s other sides there was still pride to play for. Southern and Celtic just missed out on a top four finish at the end of the round robin in their respective pools and had to settle for a spot in the Canterbury Rugby Supporters Club Trophy section. They would play each other today at Hinds. In the plate section Methven would head to Ohoka off the back of a strong end to the round robin, while in the plaque section Hampstead was away to Rolleston.

A second half fight back from Hampstead A set up a nail-biting finish in their Mid Canterbury Netball ACL premier one clash with Methven A on Thursday night. At the end of a match where only a handful of goals separated the two sides all night, the two could not be separated, the game ending in a 31-all draw. Methven A got out to a handy early lead but Hampstead A fought back to trail by just one at quarter time and continued putting Methven’s attack under pressure early in the second quarter, but the experienced Methven A side managed to sneak out to an 1814 lead at halftime – the biggest the margin would be all night. Both sides rung the changes at half time – both positional and personnel-wise – and Hampstead A quickly set about eating away at Methven’s lead, making it difficult for the opposition attackers to get the ball to their shooters, and converting their own chances to reduce the gap to just one. That’s the way it remained heading into the final quarter – Methven A leading 24-23 at three quarter time – but with time ticking away, Hampstead A pounced on every opportunity and hit the lead. Hampstead A led by two with three minutes to go but Methven A shone through, with Leanne Clemens slotting two late goals to see the game end in a 31-all draw. Meanwhile, Celtic A found themselves with a fight on their hands in the form of College A, but held on to win 29-18 and maintain their unbeaten streak. Celtic A coach Angela Leadley said her side struggled to connect on attack, and College A played well, with some strong

shooting in the first half. “Defensively we played well but just couldn’t finish it off,” Leadley said. The game was College A’s third of the week. They played two games of the Canterbury secondary school netball SuperNet competition, a deferred game against Kaiapoi High School on Monday night in Ashburton which they lost 38-34, and a match against St Andrew’s in Christchurch on Wednesday night which they won 2625 after being down 21-19 at three quarter time. College A coach Kaye Kennedy said her side turned the ball over too much against Celtic A and they were a side that had the ability to respond and score quickly. But she was pleased to keep them to just 29 goals. The night’s other game between United A and the newly promoted Mt Somers A – who started their premier one history with a win over College A last week – went the way of United A, 31-24. United A led by just two goals at both quarter time and halftime, but won the third quarter 12-3 to take a commanding lead into the last. Mt Somers punished any errors in the final quarter to make some inroads into the margin, but it was too little, too late. United A coach Claire Smitheram said it was a huge turnaround for her side, after a poor performance last week and a disrupted week with Anna Worsfold suffering a nasty knee dislocation at training. Olivia McLennan’s return from injury went well, shooting 24 from 27 for an 89 per cent goal percentage, while the work of wing defence Bridget Grant and goal defence Meg Ashworth resulted in a number of turnovers.

The top two sides in the national Beko Netball League are set to square off in a mouth-watering clash in Ashburton tomorrow. Mainland are hosting Waikato/ Bay of Plenty in their first home game of the season at Ashburton’s EA Networks Centre, the first of two games to be played in Ashburton this season as Mainland Netball looked to take top netball to the regions. Their remaining home games were being played in Lincoln and Nelson. It was fitting, according to the side’s coach Ronelle van Dongen, that their home games were dotted around the region they represented this season given the side had a “rural” sort of feel to it, with players from Temuka, Gore and even Ashburton. Former Ashburton woman Kelsey Ashworth wasn’t named in the initial Mainland squad this year but was brought in as temporary replacement cover due to a couple of injuries plaguing the side. She was making the most of the opportunity too, getting plenty of time on court. A mid-courter who had been playing wing attack for Mainland, Ashworth had impressed her coach. “She brings a real dynamic speed and change of direction which is what we often need in that position,” van Dongen said. The biggest Ashburton connection though, was on the side-line.

Van Dongen and her assistant coach Andrea Cousins were both Ashburton born and bred. Van Dongen left Ashburton more than 20 years ago, but her parents still lived here, while Cousins still lived in Ashburton. They were in their first season in charge of the Mainland side in the Beko Netball League, which was a level below the ANZ Championship in which the Mainland Tactix competed. “We had a good mix of experience and development players in the team so we really wanted to keep building for netball in the Mainland region to make sure we have got good succession through to the Tactix,” van Dongen said. Mainland had won two of their first three matches in the Beko league so far and were currently second on the table, behind Waikato/Bay of Plenty, the team they’d play in Ashburton tomorrow. “We’ve had a look at some of their previous games and they have certainly got quite a dominant shooter so we will be looking at ways to shut that down, but they play a similar style to us,” van Dongen said. That style involved a lot of flair on attack and a focus on strong “man-on-man” defence and van Dongen hoped Ashburton would get out and support her side. Tomorrow’s game at Ashburton’s EA Networks Centre will start at 5.40pm. Entry will cost $5 for adults and children under-16 are free.

SBW ruled out of French series, requires surgery

Sonny Bill Williams is out of the French series due to surgery.

Another day and another injury blow for the All Blacks with midfielder Sonny Bill Williams having been ruled out of the series against France due to a knee injury. The 32-year-old Williams aggravated an old injury while training with the Blues and scans have shown that he has a loose piece of bone in the joint. As a result, he requires surgery and the expectation is that he won’t be able to train for at least four weeks. That will rule him out of the entire series, although he will assemble with the squad to continue his rehabilitation. His loss is a blow as the selectors probably had him pencilled in to start the first test and no doubt play the bulk of the series at No.12.

The concern about his unavailability is heightened as his probable midfield partner, Ryan Crotty, is also battling as he hasn’t overcome concussion symptoms he incurred playing against the Blues a few weeks ago. Crotty and Williams are the two most senior midfielders in the squad, so the selectors will be hopeful they don’t lose both men. Now that Williams has been ruled out, it opens the door for the in-form Ngani Laumape to potentially have an extended run in the No.12 shirt. If Crotty is ruled out, then it is probable Laumape will be paired with Anton Lienert-Brown at centre. The selectors may well be eager to give the impressive Jack

Goodhue his first taste of test football at centre but they would be wary about partnering him with Laumape given their collective lack of experience. It is probable that the selectors will call in a replacement for Williams – especially with Crotty not certain to be fit either. That would likely see Matt Proctor and Rob Thompson come under consideration. Ideally the coaches would have called up Charlie Ngatai who continues to be a hugely effective and high impact contributor for the Chiefs. But he’s off to France at the end of Super Rugby and therefore not a long term prospect. Confirmation of their midfield plans will come on Monday. - NZME

Bird, who played two tests for the All Blacks in 2013, is currently sidelined for the entire Super Rugby season after injuring his shoulder in the Chiefs’ week two clash against the Crusaders. Three players, Mat Bassett, Michael Lawson and Grant Wilson will be in action at the North Island championships in Rotorua over the course of the weekend and all three look to be in with a strong chance of sneaking their way into the business end of the competition. Wilson, two of Ashburton’s best, will combine to form a strong pairs combination – further underlined by their success in the South Canterbury Fours last weekend. The duo won their way through a tough line up of players to claim the South Canterbury title and put themselves in good stead for this weekend. The pair will combine with Otago’s Daniel French and Keri Te Tamaki in the fours. French is a New Zealand representative while Lawson and

Wilson have both played for the South Island and Te Tamaki was last month named in the South Island academy team for the match during the national championships. In the triples, Lawson, French and Te Tamaki will combine while Wilson teams up with his sister, Fiona – a former New Zealand representative. Bassett will also be right in the fight. He’s in a strong pairs combination with New Zealand representative, Teri Anderson and will

also play alongside her in the triples and the fours. Meanwhile, Geoff and Bernice Laird, Gaylene Smith and Russell Ellis will represent Ashburton at the NZ Mixed Fours Zone playoff later in the season after winning the Ashburton district leg last weekend. The quartet saw off a field of six teams in the qualifier and will now shoot for the chance at national glory if they can win the zone play-off against teams from North Otago, South Canterbury and Canterbury.

After ending his playing career by headbutting an opponent in the 2006 World Cup final, Zidane is closing out his stint with Real Madrid with the fresh image of him lifting the Champions League trophy. Zidane made the surprise announcement that he was leaving Madrid yesterday, less than a week after leading the team to its third straight Champions League title. “You have to know when to quit,” said the 45-year-old Zidane, who was Madrid’s coach for two and half seasons. “This is the right moment. Usain Bolt won’t be getting back his ninth Olympic gold medal. A Court of Arbitration for Sport judging panel yesterday dismissed Jamaican sprinter Nesta Carter’s appeal against disqualification from the 2008 Beijing Olympics for a positive doping test discovered eight years later. Carter ran the opening leg in the 4x100-metre relay when Bolt took the baton third and helped Jamaica win in a world record of 37.10 seconds. In fresh analysis of Beijing samples by the International Olympic Committee in 2016, Carter tested positive for the stimulant methylhexaneamine. High Performance Sport New Zealand chief executive Michael Scott has demanded answers into sprint coach Anthony Peden’s surprise exit from Cycling New Zealand. Peden resigned on Wednesday. HPSNZ confirmed the allegations include bullying, drinking and an inappropriate relationship with an athlete. Scott confirmed an investigation will be launched into how it came about. The terms of reference will be confirmed and shared within a week. The taxpayer will invest $4.4 million in CNZ via HPSNZ this year, so accountability and indepth answers are expected. “The high performance environment is all about pressure and intensity, but there is absolutely no place for bullying,” Scott said. “I became aware of this in early May and immediately contacted

[Cycling New Zealand chief executive] Andrew Matheson. I congratulate him on quickly taking action. What was known within HPSNZ and what was done with that information is something that will come out of our investigation. “This will focus on HPSNZ – our people, our processes and our actions. Our role is to give athletes the best possible chance of success, and I expect this organisation to treat with the utmost seriousness anything that may be a threat to athlete welfare.” On Thursday Scott issued a mea culpa on behalf of his organisation with a statement saying “we could and should have done more with the information we had” and “integrity and ethics are fundamentals of sport”. NZME has repeatedly tried to contact Peden to establish how his departure unfolded.

However, the coach and CNZ staff are believed to be bound by confidentiality clauses, despite the taxpayer helping to fund their existence. The Herald understands a wider culture of stress pervades the CNZ environment, arguably driven by HPSNZ’s overarching strategy to prioritise medals over anything else. Given the annual funding round has become directly related to podium finishes, sources told the Herald CNZ’s default position, like many sports, has been to create a “nothing to see here” façade, regardless of any issues brewing. CNZ’s funding has dropped from $4.7 million (2016) to $4.2 million (2017) and $4.4 million (2018). Peden was understood to have employed a my-way-orthe-highway approach, but his methods had extended beyond

his contractual brief. The decision could place the 2020 Olympic medal dreams of men’s riders – Ethan Mitchell, Sam Webster and Eddie Dawkins – and women’s riders – Natasha Hansen and Emma Cumming – in jeopardy. In the original press release, Peden said his approach was not aligned to that of CNZ. “I can’t talk in any detail around that,” Matheson said. “It relates to an employee-employer relationship. “Anthony’s done an amazing job and we thank him for that.” On Wednesday, Matheson said Peden and CNZ had been talking for a while about the coach’s future. “It’s been a tough journey through the world championships and Commonwealth Games, so it [Peden’s decision] hasn’t come out of the blue.” - NZME

Stephen Curry scored 29 points and the Golden State Warriors capitalised on a Cavaliers blunder that sent the game into overtime, withstanding a brilliant 51-point performance by LeBron James to beat Cleveland 124-114 in Game 1 of the NBA Finals. James was in utter disbelief as regulation ended in stunning fashion: George Hill made the first of two free throws with 4.7 seconds left after being fouled by Klay Thompson, but when J.R. Smith secured the rebound of the second, he dribbled back toward halfcourt instead of shooting, apparently thinking the Cavs had a lead. Instead, OT. And why not? James shot 19 for 32 to go with eight assists and eight rebounds in the opener of his eighth straight NBA Finals and ninth overall, as well as Cavs-Warriors Take IV. James notched his eighth 40-point game during this playoff run to tie Hall of Famer Jerry West’s feat in 1965 for most in a single postseason. James drove past Curry for a three-point play with 50 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter. But James was given a foul following a review with 36.4 seconds left and Kevin Durant converted a pair of free throws to tie it at 104. The call had initially been a charge on 2017 Finals MVP Durant and James protested the change. Durant struggled with his shot but wound up with 26 points on 8-for-22 shooting and nine rebounds. Golden State got a serious scare when Thompson went down after Smith slid hard into the Splash Brother’s left leg at the 6:17 mark of the first quarter. Thompson was in pain then went to the locker room with what was called a bruised left leg that needed re-taping. He returned for the start of the second quarter to huge roars from the crowd and scored 24 points. Curry drained one of those wayout-there 3-pointers that have been hard to come by this postseason to beat the halftime buzzer and Golden State shot 13 for 36 from deep. Kevin Love returned from a concussion to provide a big boost for Cleveland with 21 points and 13 rebounds. The Warriors missed the defensive presence of 2015 NBA Finals MVP Andre Iguodala, who missed his fifth straight postseason game dealing with a bone bruise in his left knee. The game nearly over, James jawed with both Curry and Klay Thompson, then Tristan Thompson and Draymond Green tangled moments later and made contact. Methven horseman, Ricky May will be out to add a few more Jewels to his already glistening crown today at Cambridge. May, one of New Zealand’s best harness racing drivers, will be one of a number of drivers to follow throughout the massive day of Group One racing with a strong book of drives including a few likely favourites in their respective races. He will combine with Woodend Beach trainers, Greg and Nina Hope for two really strong winning hopes, Enghien and A G’s White Socks who are likely to both start favourites thanks to good draws and strong recent form. And while both look strong chances on paper, the always cautious May has his reservations, particularly with Enghien. “I have to nurse him around the mile at Cambridge,” he said. “It’s a lot different to Ashburton. “Habibi Inta looks the one to beat but I’ll be quite happy to sit parked and control the race from there.” A G’s White Socks will contest a strong looking Four-Year-Old Emerald Division, but has the added bonus of drawing barrier two which, over a mile at Cambridge, means all the cards sit in the hand of May. It’s a good draw, but it’s also a bad one because May is almost forced into making the most of it – made harder by the horse inside him having very good gate speed.

Sweet results for Woodlands Stud Sweet Lou announced himself as a sire to be taken seriously with a couple of staggering sales at the Autumn Weanling and All Aged Sale in Karaka yesterday. Woodlands Stud’s relatively new sire had two colts – one from each of his first two crops – sell for sixfigure prices after spirited bidding wars. Chief amongst them was the $120,000 that a colt out of the treasured Scuse Me family sold for, making him New Zealand’s highest selling standardbred weanling at auction. The unnamed colt is the first foal of American Ideal mare Super Deal, a daughter of a half-sister to Christen Me and Dream About Me, Splendid Dreams. The man who stuck his hand up with the winning bid was a Canterbury trainer, who wished to remain nameless, acting on behalf of an overseas client. Officially, the winning bid went to the auction house, as agents. The under-bidder was Sydney’s Mary Rosati, who pushed the envelope in a spirited duel with the phone-bidder, alongside husband Emilio. Earlier, a scratching from February’s Australasian Classic Yearling Sale was knocked to Jean Feiss for $150,000 after a sustained sale ring battle. John Street, Jim Gibbs and Greg Payne were among the underbidders on the Sweet Lou colt, named Pacing Lou, from the family of Pacing Major. Feiss said she was reluctant to buy the colt at the yearling sales because of his unproven sire but the decision was made for her when he was scratched when it was revealed he had a cyst in his throat. “I was a bit hesitant back then because the sire was unproven, and I was humming and harring. “But looking at him now, he’s developed, and a lot of trainers have

Casey also picked up a broodmare, going to $22,000 for Paddy Brown, a Christian Cullen halfsister to this season’s Group 1-winning juvenile filly, Kayla Marie. Casey then went to $26,000 for Paddy Brown’s Bettor’s Delight weanling filly, offered by Palmerston North breeders, Braeden

and Caroline Whitelock. Ken Breckon went back to the pin-hooking well once again, going to $44,000 for the weanling full brother to Star Galleria, by Art Major. The Rosatis, in the company of Oamaru trainer Phil Williamson, went to $40,000 for a Love You weanling colt from the family of the latter’s former good mare, Allegro Agitato. Taumalolo still undecided Jason Taumalolo has left the door open for a controversial return to New Zealand after refusing to pledge his allegiance to the Kiwis or Tonga for the representative round later this month. New Zealand coach Michael Maguire said he is resigned to being without the dual-eligible players who represented Tonga at last year’s World Cup when the Kiwis meet England in Denver on June 23. However, after turning in a match-winning performance in North Queensland’s NRL win over Manly, Taumalolo said his mind remains open on the issue. Taumalolo, who turned 25 on Thursday, said he has put all his focus on helping the Cowboys kick-start their disappointing start to the campaign before considering his international options. “I haven’t spoken too much with anyone at the moment regarding representative stuff, purely because I’ve been trying to focus on trying to get (North Queensland) back on track,” Taumalolo said. “I’ve got a few more weeks so I’m sure you guys will find out soon.” The Cowboys star turned in his best performance of the season

While considered a player of unparalleled natural ability, Taumalolo revealed his lull in form led him to question himself. “At the start there we were 3-4 losses, you start doubting yourself and start questioning why you’re still playing,” he said. “I’ve slowly got myself out of that slump for a bit, just trying to find myself and not only better myself but better everyone else around me too.” Maguire told New Zealand’s Stuff website that he believed the likes of Manu Mau, Sio Suia Taukeiaho, David Fusitu’a and Solomone Kata would play for Tonga in the Test against Samoa in Sydney on the same day. “Those guys I think are going to stick with Tonga,” Maguire said. “I’ve had bits of communication around that and for myself coming in, I want players who will go out and put their bodies on the line for that jersey.” Meanwhile, Australian Ben Gardiner has been retained as one of Maguire’s assistant coaches, with a New Zealander still to be named to fill the other assistant role. - AAP

Halves fume over dog shot on Johnathan Thurston James Maloney has backed calls for sin-bins for deliberate late shots on playmakers after champion halfback Johnathan Thurston questioned if it would take him breaking a rib for the NRL to act. The North Queensland captain was again laid out in an attack by an opposition forward for the second week in a row in Thursday’s

breakthrough victory over Manly. One week after getting belted by Melbourne forward Sam Kasiano that resulted in a one-week ban, Thurston was whacked by Jack Gosiewski long after passing the ball in the first half at Lottoland. Gosiewski was charged on Friday but a minimum of a one-game ban will likely mean nothing given

he suffered a suspected broken hand in the loss and would have been sidelined anyway. Maloney said it was time NRL officials started taking action on the field for dangerous hits after playmakers had taken to the line before passing. “I saw the one on replay and it was pretty ordinary against JT. It

was very late,” Maloney said. “It’s a hard thing. They’re trying to put pressure on ball players but you’ve got to draw a line where it’s acceptable. “I know it hurts when you get it, it can really take it out of you. They’re sin-binning for a lot of things so there’s no reason why they can’t for that.”

WANTED, A special home for a special cat This is Winter, she is a desexed and microchipped female approximately 7 months old, who is looking for a place to call home and a family to love. As Winter is deaf, she will need to be an indoor only cat to ensure her safety and wellbeing. Winter is a sweet girl with an out going character. She is used to small dogs and thrives on affection and having a someone around to play with.

Mid Canterbury Animal Shelter AGM Come meet the Team and hear what we are all about at our Annual General Meeting on Saturday 23rd June, starting at 2.30pm in the St Johns Rooms on Tancred Street, Ashburton. Everyone is welcome. Any donations of food, treats, blankets or toys are greatly appreciated by the animals in foster care.
