Best egg throwers in the world

Ashburton has another world champion flying the New Zealand flag on the world stage, this time in egg throwing.

Former Ashburton College head boy Lachie Davidson and his team-mate Ben McColgan finished first at the World Egg Throwing Championships in the United Kingdom in the early hours of Monday morning (NZ time).

The pair successfully threw the egg 60m, with Davidson doing the throwing and McColgan, a wicket-keeper, the catching.

The pair qualified for the event after finishing second at the New Zealand Rural Games after only initially entering the have-a-go competition.

“We were doing the fencing and stuff and hadn’t even thought about the egg throwing, but we won the have-a-go section and ended up in the nationals which was full of cricket players and baseball players,” Davidson said before the trip to the United Kingdom.

The pair that won the national title chose not to take up the offer of a free trip to the world championships, handing it to Davidson and McColgan.

The flights to the event in England were sponsored by a travel company and Davidson said Massey University has jumped on-board, sponsoring their team outfits, proudly showing off their name, the Yolk Ferns.

Prior to the competition, Davidson said their goal was to head over and give it a good crack and have a bit of fun.

Opportunist thief jailed for 10 months on raft of charges A 34-year-old man who admitted a raft of charges including burglary, theft, receiving and stealing a vehicle was jailed for 10 months yesterday when he appeared in the Ashburton District Court.

“It was opportunist offending and you were trying to meet your immediate needs at the time, putting your desires above the rights of others.”

Judge Maze said he had a history of dishonesty, including several convictions for burglary, though a probation report suggested he was making positive progress to reform.

She jailed him for 10 months,

refusing leave for the term to be converted to home detention with electronic monitoring.

She noted he owed reparation of $23,000 and remitted his outstanding fines so he could concentrate on repaying the victims of his crime.

Defence counsel Gretchen Hart said Graham had kept himself out of prison since 2006 but had spiralled after making a mistake because he thought he would be sent back to prison an-

yway. “He made a mistake with the first offence and then immediately thought that the outcome would be he would be sent back to prison so an element of futility in his behaviour crept in. He assumed he would be sent back to prison and became cavalier in terms of his thinking right from wrong.”

Hart said he was keen to make good changes in his life and was sorry for his actions.

“He cannot let it spiral out of

control again.”

Judge Maze ordered Graham to be under special conditions for six months following his release from jail and ordered him to make reparation of $96 for the scrap metal burglary and $400 for the cash.

An alleged co-offender Marjorie Leeann Gill, 41, faces one charge of burglary and was remanded to August 12.

Police happy with Mid Canterbury’s booze bus result

Mid Canterbury drivers have been given a big tick of approval after a police booze bus operation on Friday night in Ashburton resulted in just one low-limit breach of drink driving laws.

The drivers of around 280 vehicles were processed at a checkpoint on West Street on Friday and only an infringement notice for a low-level reading was issued during the course of the operation.

Another small blip on the radar came later in the night once the operation was completed and policing staff branched out wider into the district, catching one driver who will appear before the courts for failing the evidential breath test.

Ashburton’s senior sergeant Leigh Jenkins said the outcome was a positive one for the district.

“We are very happy with that as a result,” he said.

The booze bus is based in Christchurch and can be requested for locations like Ashburton, something Jenkins is planning on doing more frequently in the future.

“It is a high visibility deterrent,” he said.

“In the winter especially it is cold, dark and icy and the last thing we need is people on the roads with booze in their system.”

“With this number of officers it allows you to stop a road like State Highway 1 as you can process six to eight cars at a time and keep it moving.

“A state highway is always a concern as they are either going north or south and going 100km/h with booze in the system doesn’t tend to end well.”

media had had a small effect on the booze bus checkpoints, but that it was something out of their control and not a major issue.

“It is something that we really can’t avoid,” he said.

“In the past we might have stayed in one location all night, but now we only stay for an hour or two and move on.”

Flu hospitalisations in Mid Canterbury have more than doubled over the past week and there has been one flu-related death.

Canterbury District Health Board medical officer of health Dr Ramon Pink said one patient admitted to Ashburton Hospital,

with pre-existing conditions, had died of complications from influenza.

“Canterbury community influenza-like illness rates and influenza-related hospital admissions remain above average for this time of year,” Dr Pink said.

There had been 11 influenza-related hospitalisations in the Ash-

burton District so far this flu season, since the start of May. This compares to reported hospitalisations totalling five for the whole season last week and the week before.

“In New Zealand, flu-related illnesses cause around 400 deaths a year and account for 45 per cent of sick days each winter,” Dr

S.E.E.D.S needs more volunteers

After one of their busiest years since they started, S.E.E.D.S are on the hunt for more volunteers to join their team.

S.E.E.D.S (sharing everyday experiences and drawing on skills) is an organisation that matches trained volunteers with families who have pre-schoolers and teaches them parenting and domestic skills to reduce stress and improve family confidence.

Co-ordinator Marie McAnulty said an increase in cases going through the organisation had seen a demand for volunteers increase.

“We are always looking for new volunteers,” she said.

“There is quite a high need now, we had 23 cases in 2010 and we had between 38 and 40 last year.

“The work has become a bit more complex, but we have a wonderful group of ladies and we match their skills to the clients.”

McAnulty said while they have never had a male volunteer, they would certainly not turn one away if they put themselves forward.

“There have been no men that are keen to, it has just never happened,” she said.

The programme focuses around setting goals for the clients, which can be incredibly rewarding as a volunteer she said.

“If they can reach one of those goals it is a real success and a breakthrough,” she said.

The S.E.E.D.S programme is always looking for volunteer parent support workers. The ideal parent support volunteers are practical, open-minded, warm, empathetic and have a good sense of humour.

Anyone interested in being a part of the programme is asked to contact co-ordinator Marie McAnulty through Safer Ashburton.

Selwyn District Councillor Craig Watson has announced he will not seek re-election, choosing instead to put his name forward for selection for the National Party candidacy in Selwyn.

Watson had told the Selwyn App earlier this month he was still undecided whether he would stand again for election to the council this year and then last week incumbent Selwyn MP, National’s Amy Adams, announced she will retire from politics at the 2020 election.

Rather than seek a second term on the council Watson has set his sights set on filling Adams’ vacancy.

“Amy Adams’ announcement [last] week to stand down as the local National Party MP forced me to have a few days of reflection to decide where I could best serve the people of Selwyn most effectively,” Watson said.

“My family and I love this district, it’s our home, and it has been a privilege working for the Selwyn council where I have been involved in a variety of fantastic projects, but I have never made a secret of my dream to one day represent our community in Parliament.

“I have served the National Party for over a decade and have a strong relationship with the local membership, so I believe the time is right to offer myself for consideration to be their next representative in Wellington.”

In making his announcement, Watson said he wanted to make an early decision about standing for council to avoid triggering a potential council by-election.

“I know there are no guarantees when standing for the National Party candidacy, but I decided it would have been unethical going through the council elections, knowing that I could be involved in another election in a year’s time,” Watson said.

Drink drivers given interlocks A Mid Canterbury farmer convicted of two drink driving offences within 18 months was sentenced to an alcohol interlock device when he appeared in the Ashburton District Court yesterday.

Matthew David John Walker was caught over the limit in February last year driving with 441mcg and again recently with 693mcg.

He admitted the new driving with excess breath alcohol charge.

Judge Joanna Maze said she accepted he had been moving his

vehicle only a short distance and didn’t want to leave chemicals exposed.

She did not impose a fine but said the alcohol interlock sentence could cost up to $3000.

Walker is disqualified from driving for 28 days then can apply for an interlock, a device fitted to his vehicle which will only operate with an alcohol-free breath sample.

The interlock will be followed with a three-year zero alcohol licence.

Judge Maze said the breath al-

cohol level was not high. “But it is of concern that after the first conviction you should offend again so quickly.”

Defence counsel Roz Burnside said Walker had properties some distance apart and drove many different types of farm vehicles.

The interlock could only be attached to one.

Sapphire Lee Campbell was also sentenced to an alcohol interlock device.

She admitted two charges of drink driving, two charges of careless driving and one of driv-

ing while suspended.

Judge Maze also added a sentence of intensive supervision.

Both incidents happened outside Mid Canterbury. In the first Campbell had 106mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood in her system when she went through an intersection last year, hit a kerb and went through a fence.

In the second, after which she blew 545mcg, she lost control of her vehicle and hit a parked car, which was shunted forward and hit another.

She had a previous drink drive

conviction in 2016 and one in the youth court for careless driving causing injury.

The judge imposed judicial monitoring with the intensive supervision, telling Campbell she would be keeping a close eye on her progress. She did not impose any fines because of the financial cost of the interlock sentence that the defendant would have to bear.

Campbell owes some $23,000 in reparation for the first incident, but the matter will be dealt with in the civil court.

Restorative justice meeting with family member over theft Others to appear before Judge Maze yesterday were: Brendan John Pethig, 45, will have a restorative justice meeting with a family member after admitting dishonestly using her bank card.

She gave him her card on May 1 to buy cigarettes for her, but he also bought cigarettes for him, filled up his car with petrol and withdrew $200 cash.

The unauthorised spending totalled $376. The complainant cancelled the bank card when she realised Pethig had not returned it.

He was remanded to August 12 for sentence, following restorative justice.

“Obviously the more you can do to put things right with the victim, the better it will be,” the judge told him.

Daniel John Sampey, 29, drove against court orders with no appreciation of the consequences.

Sampey admitted four charges of driving while disqualified, once in March and three times in May. His lawyer Gretchen Hart said Sampey failed to recognise the gravity of the situation and a special report about his level of understanding might help the court in sentencing.

“The issue is he finds himself in situations where he drives by default when the situation presents

itself. Until the cycle is stopped he will just continue to appear on these matters, in spite of the fact he says he knows he cannot drive.”

Judge Maze said Sampey made deliberate decisions to drive during a period of disqualification.

“There was nothing about it which was compelling him to drive. He simply chose to do it.

The fact that he does not have the same appreciation of the consequences is not in itself a basis for a defence, or I would have a lot of other people saying ‘I didn’t appreciate it would go this far’.”

She convicted him on the driving while disqualified charges and remanded him for sentence on August 12.

Marcia Jane Gordon, 50, admitted driving with excess blood alcohol (162 milligrams of alcohol per 100ml of blood) in Ashburton on April 24. The blood alcohol limit is 50mg.

Police prosecutor sergeant Ian Howard said Gordon was driving in Tinwald about 6.30pm and pulled out in front of another vehicle turning onto Archibald Street. Her vehicle was seen weaving up the road and running over a traffic island.

Gordon was followed to Wakanui Road and seen to go into a house. Police were called and

Emma Sarah Small admitted six charges, including four of assault, following a family incident at Orari. The 40-year-old was remanded to August 26 for sentence, following a restorative justice meeting with her mother and step father.

Police said she grabbed her mother’s hair and tried to punch her. Then she tried to punch her step father when he got up to intervene. The couple locked themselves in a bedroom and called police.

Outside in the hallway, Small broke a vase, a table and an internet modem causing $300 damage.

Small got into a scuffle when police came to arrest her; she was described as aggressive and argumentative.

She kicked one officer in the chest and another in the lower back.

Judge Maze asked for the intensive supervision to be accompanied by judicial monitoring, which means she will see a report about Hemi’s attitude and progress in three months’ time. If the judge is not happy, Hemi will be resentenced.

Judge Maze said Hemi and her brother, with a knife tucked in the waistband of his pants, had gone to a house and demanded money from the occupant. He had denied them entry.

The pair went back a second time, the brother with an imitation gun, and repeated their demands. The man called police.

Hemi’s lawyer April Kelland said the young mother’s life had been in a downward spiral since the death of her father. She was trying to get her life back together and did not want to end up in Christchurch Women’s prison, where she had already spent two weeks in custody while on remand.

A 20-year-old mother-of-two who went to a house with her brother, who was armed with a knife, to demand money from the occupant was sentenced to 12 months’ intensive supervision and 75 hours community work.

Jesse Hemi had admitted two charges of demanding with intent to steal.

Allan James Smith, 36, admitted driving while suspended at Rakaia on June 16. He had gone to the Christchurch police station to collect his notice of suspension but did not read its terms; when his licence was mailed back to him he thought he could drive again.

“You should hang your head in shame,” Judge Maze told Malcolm Morunga, who admitted possessing methamphetamine, a glass pipe and breaching post-detention conditions.

Morunga had told the judge he shared his home with a child.

“That child is entitled to live in a safe home, not exposed to drugs, not exposed to police calling around to search for drugs,” she told Morunga.

She sentenced him to six months’ supervision and ordered him to do alcohol and drug counselling and a parenting course.

Police said the drugs were found on Morunga after he was spoken to at Baring Square yesterday. He was searched at the station and the drugs and pipe found in a sunglasses case.

Scammers fleece hundreds Cars collide on Cameron Street Emergency services were called to the scene of a four-car crash on Cameron Street on Monday. A St John spokesman said two patients were taken to Ashburton Hospital in a moderate condition following the crash. Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade chief Alan Burgess said firefighters only had to check things were all right and clean up minor spills from the vehicles. He said it appeared one vehicle had struck the rear of another, forcing it to hit the rear of another vehicle, which was repeated for the fourth vehicle.

Award for ‘dedicated’ branch Forest and Bird’s Ashburton branch members are thrilled to have received their national organisation’s annual branch award.

Presented at Forest and Bird New Zealand’s annual conference in Wellington on Saturday, the award recognised branch members’ work in protecting and restoring nature.

Forest and Bird’s Canterbury and West Coast regional manager Nicky Snoyink said Ashburton branch members were highly dedicated.

The award gave credit to members’ work over many years at the Hakatere Conservation Park and the wider Ashburton Lakes wetland area, and in conducting lakes and river bird surveys, engaging the community and environmental advocacy including on the hot topic of climate change.

Other laudable projects included wilding pine eradication, pest trapping, and restoration work on the Harris Scientific Reserve, a rare dryland ecosystem near Ashburton.

Chairwoman Edith Smith said it was an honour to receive the award.

“We have always had a wonderful committee,” Smith said.

“It was a wonderful committee when I first joined and got to know some of the old stalwarts in the 1980s. Now we have new members coming along.”

She said it wasn’t always easy being the voice of nature in a region with such a strong focus on intensive agriculture, irrigation and dairying.

Air rifle causes all sorts of problems NZME A Christchurch tenant who left behind an air rifle in his vacated rental later sent armed police swarming on his landlord’s property by reporting the firearm stolen.

According to a recent Tenancy Tribunal decision, the incident started two days after the Christchurch mosque shootings when the tenant moved out of his New Brighton rental and was found to have damaged its walls, kitchen bench, mattress and microwave.

He also left an unlicensed air rifle under the bed.

The tenant – who the Herald have chosen not to name because he is under 18 years old – has since contacted the Herald to say they weren’t able to attend the Tenancy Tribunal hearing and that they dispute many of the landlord’s claims.

According to the Tenancy Tribunal decision, however, landlord Alan Butcher found the rifle two weeks later and called police and handed it over to them, before telling his tenant what

he’d done. That led the tenant to phone police and claim Butcher had stolen his firearm – a call that sent armed police swarming on Butcher’s premises.

Faced with armed officers, Butcher was forced to explain what had happened and the police eventually confirmed they already had the rifle in custody.

“It was a big shock for Mr Butcher to find the air rifle and he then had to deal with the police twice over it,” the Tenancy Tribunal adjudicator said.

“The second time armed police came to the premises ... was at a time of extremely heightened tension over the possession of firearms.”

The adjudicator found the tenant showed a disregard for the difficult situation he put his former landlord in.

He also found the tenant had committed an unlawful act by keeping the unlicensed firearm in the house and awarded $300 in exemplary damages to Butcher.

“It is obviously behaviour that the Tribunal should discourage because it is not in anyone’s interests,” he said.

The tenant also had to pay a further $541 to cover the repairs and cleaning needed at the tenancy after he vacated.

The tenant later told the Herald he was overseas at the time of the tribunal hearing because he mistook the date it was being held.

He said he only damaged the flat’s kitchen bench by leaving a burn mark on it, damage that he immediately told the landlord about.

He also claimed the landlord unlawfully entered his flat and removed the air rifle before his tenancy ended, not after he vacated the flat.

He said he had mostly cleared his belongings from the flat but hadn’t fully removed them.

His father then called police to ask them to recover the air rifle, he said.

This led to two armed police visiting the landlord.

The tenant also claimed this took place almost two months before the Christchurch mosque shootings, not days after it as the Tenancy Tribunal decision stated.

NZME Police believe there may be hundreds of victims in an ongoing phone scam which has urged the public to post hundreds of thousands of dollars across the country or overseas.

Police are issuing a public warning after some banks indicated to police there may be hundreds of victims over the past few months.

Auckland City Financial Crime Unit’s Detective Sergeant Kevin Blackman said police have received a significant number of reports regarding people falling victim to a phone scam, which involves callers falsely claiming to be from Spark and/or the police before convincing victims to withdraw or to transfer tens of thousands of dollars from their bank accounts.

Earlier this month, police investigating the scam reports were able to intercept two separate packages in Auckland containing a total of $25,000.

The two victims, one of whom was an 84-year-old woman, were identified and had their intercepted money returned by police.

Further inquiries revealed that both victims had posted further packages containing substantial amounts of money, which is yet to be recovered.

Blackman said these were just two examples of the unfolding scam, which police believe follows a clear pattern.

“The victims in these matters are almost always contacted initially on their landline phones,” Blackman said.

“The caller typically claims they are from Spark, claiming there is a security or internet issue with their computer or router.”

At some point in the conversation, the victims are told by email that they are the subject of identity theft or fraud.

They are then spoken to by a person falsely claiming to be a police officer.

“The victim is then told that police need their assistance to set up a ‘trap’ to catch the criminals,” Blackman said.

“They are convinced to withdraw large sums of money – often in the area of $10,000 to $15,000 – and given an address to post the money to or bank account to transfer it to.

“The victims are often called repeatedly by the person claiming to be a police officer and talked into sending further large sums of money as part of the ‘trap’.

“We are aware of victims being asked to send money to different addresses in Auckland, as well as overseas locations including

Spain, Japan and Australia.”

Blackman said by the time some people realised they had been scammed, they had lost tens of thousands of dollars, which has likely made its way overseas making it very difficult to be recovered.

“Not every case has been reported to police so we are unable to confirm how much money has been sent to the scammers, but it is easily in the hundreds of thousands of dollars.”

Blackman said many of the victims were vulnerable, older members of the community who were less technologically-minded and therefore more likely to believe claims they’ve fallen victim to computer hacking or identity fraud.

“It’s imperative that you warn your family and friends. Have conversations with your parents and grandparents, inform your elderly or vulnerable neighbours and ensure that everyone is aware of this scam,” he said.

“Never give your personal details over the phone to a stranger.

If you think a call may be suspicious, hang up immediately and do not engage with the caller.

“A police officer will never ask for your bank details over the phone or ask you to transfer money. If you receive a call of this nature, hang up immediately.”

The New Zealand Telecommunications Forum (TCF) warns that consumers should be suspicious of any unsolicited calls from telecommunications companies.

TCF CEO Geoff Thorn said telecommunications providers would never ring and ask for personal information like credit card details, bank account numbers or request access to a computer or laptop without you knowing why.

“They will also never ring unexpectedly and tell you that there is a virus or security issue with your computer,” he said.

“If you do have some concerns about a call, ring the company back on their publicly listed number, not the number they called you from, and alert them to the call you have just received. They will let you know if it was a legitimate call.

“We know that scammers can be persuasive, but if something seems to be unusual or completely out of the blue, then you should hang up.”

Police believe the scammers operate overseas but understand people in New Zealand may be assisting with sending the packages of money offshore.

Anyone who believes they are a victim of a scam is advised to contact police immediately.

With those words, a deliberate step and a pat on the arm of Kim Jong Un, President Donald Trump became the first sitting American leader to step into North Korea as the two made history at the heavily fortified Demilitarized Zone.

The made-for-television moment was unthinkable just two years ago, when the men were trading base insults and grim threats.

Trump’s three-hour stop at the DMZ – of which about 80 minutes were spent with Kim – was a display of handshake-diplomacy for the history books, but also a chaotic spectacle reflective of the last-minute nature of the invitation to the authoritarian leader to join him at the border between the Koreas.

Afterward, it was unclear whether the meeting was more show than substance. Other than the headline-grabbing moment and the unprecedented images, Trump’s only accomplishment appeared to be securing an agreement to restart nuclear talks that he himself had walked out on in February during his last summit with Kim in Vietnam.

Trump had long planned a visit to the DMZ, dating to 2017 when a scheduled trip was cancelled by fog, but aides said the public invitation for Kim to join him there was as spontaneous as it seemed. In typical Trump fashion, it started with a tweet.

Whaling resumption seen as face-saving AP Japan has resumed commercial whaling after 31 years, meeting a long-cherished goal of traditionalists that’s seen as a largely lost cause.

Whaling boats embarked yesterday on their first commercial hunts since 1988, when Japan switched to so-called research whaling, but will stay within the country’s exclusive economic waters. Japan’s six-month notice to withdraw from the International Whaling Commission took effect Sunday.

The Fisheries Agency said the catch quota through the end of this year is set at 227 whales, fewer than the 333 Japan hunted in the Antarctic in recent years. The quota for this season’s catch, planned for release in late June, was withheld until yesterday apparently to avoid criticism during the Group of 20 summit that concluded over the weekend in Osaka.

While the resumption of commercial whaling is condemned by many conservation groups, others see it as a face-saving way to let the government’s embattled and expensive whaling programme gradually succumb to changing

times and tastes.

Despite the massive attention and tax money and political support from ruling party lawmakers, whaling in Japan involved only a few hundred people and accounted for less than 0.1 per cent of total meat consumption in fiscal 2017, according to the latest government data on food sufficiency.

Whale meat was an affordable source of protein during the lean times after World War Two, with consumption peaking at 223,000 tons in 1962. But whale was quickly replaced by other meats. Whale meat consumption was down to 6000 tons in 1986, a year before the commercial whaling moratorium imposed by the IWC. Under the research hunts, which was criticised as a cover for commercial hunts as the meat was sold on the market, Japan at its peak caught as many as 1200 whales but has drastically cut back on its catch in recent years after international protests escalated and whale meat consumption slumped at home.

The storm that might take months to hit A

silent storm began brewing across Ashburton last week, but it might be a couple of months yet before we see the full impact it has on our district.

The epicentre of the storm ....? A simple water feature, on the western edge of one of the busiest streets in Ashburton, East Street, and its potential relocation to a new home in the Ashburton Domain.

Seems innocuous enough, but what should be well known by now after a number of other issues over the past few years within this district, when the community aren’t in favour of something being decided on in the council chambers, then they generally like to make their

feelings known – and it tends to happen in big numbers.

Councillors voted last Thursday on the relocation with the majority of those sitting around the table in favour of the change to make way for a new architectural approach as part of the CBD revitalisation process.

It wasn’t a clear-cut vote, a number of councillors spoke against the proposed change but were ultimately outnumbered

by their peers around the table and a binding majority decision was made.

But while this decision was made on the spot on Thursday, with information provided to councillors through reports and other fact gatherings, the real information appeared to be sitting in a much more accessible location – social media.

Just days earlier on the social media page of local radio announcer Phill Hooper followers were asked the very same question posed to councillors on Thursday – were people in favour of the relocation of the water feature?

And the short answer, was no.

In fact with more than 200 people commenting on the

post, you’d hazard a guess that between 95 and 99 per cent of those were vehemently against it.

Those facts and figures aren’t taken to meetings in preparation for decisions like this, it is the responsibility of individual councillors to do their own homework on how the public might react to a decision – but in this case it would seem that perhaps that wasn’t done by all sitting around the table.

The decision is made and most would presume that it therefore spells the end of the debate, but a binding decision can be re-visited by the same elected members who made the original decision if it is deemed a worthwhile discussion to have.

Not that this should come into the equation at all, but with an election just around the corner decisions made now will more than likely be etched in the minds of voters when it comes time to head to the polling booths.

It could be quite possible that some might choose to make a stand and react to the public outcry and bring the discussion back to the table for a second look – allowing public opinion and feeling to have an impact in decision making and potentially score a couple of brownie points for voting day in the process.

That’s all speculative of course – speculative but a distinct possibility if word around the water feature is anything to go by.

Farmers have axe to grind with trees trend I

t was pleasing to hear Forestry Minister Shane Jones tell TVNZ recently that he will take another look at land use regulations to address the growing unease among farmers that prime livestock land is being snapped up for mass pine planting, including by foreign companies.

But other statements he and some commentators are making, generally downplaying the impact of farmland to forestry conversion impacts on rural communities, and asserting that forestry generates more jobs and GDP than the sheep and beef sector, are vexing.

Firstly the numbers. Statistics NZ data for 2017 (the most recent year available) tells us that dairy cattle farming contributed $5.77 billion to NZ’s GDP; sheep, beef cattle and grains farming $2.91 billion; and other livestock farming $550 million. Forestry and logging contributed $1.74 billion.

In terms of processing, meat product manufacturing contributed $1.93 billion, dairy product manufacturing $1.82 billion, and wood product, pulp and paper manufacturing $2.18 billion.

What about jobs? Statistics NZ’s Business Demography data (2018) tells us sheep, beef cattle and grains farming had 23,784 enterprises employing 24,400 full-time equivalent (FTE) staff (excluding owners).

FTEs. On the processing side, not including the wool industry, meat product manufacturing employed 30,300 FTEs, wood, pulp and paper, 23,600.

Our concern on the job and rural economy front is that agriculture is a year-round activity, with staff and owners on site, interacting and spending in the rural communities – food, farm supplies, stock transport, vet services and all the rest of it.

Forestry has surges of activity – planting, then harvesting 25 or so years later, with not much in between save for some pruning and spraying. Most of that is achieved with forestry gangs, who then move on to the next site.

A key principle of Federated Farmers is that it doesn’t tell farmers what to do with their land. But we are concerned to see mass forestry plantations swallow productive farmland due to a skewing of rural land prices by government intervention.

This intervention is in the form of One Billion Trees planting subsidies; ‘carbon farming’ under the ETS; more relaxed rules for

overseas investors if they’re buying land for forestry; and a permissive National Environmental Standard for Plantation Forestry when land use rules for farming activities are becoming ever more prescriptive.

Strangely enough, in the same TVNZ report that quoted Shane Jones, Federated Farmers found itself in tune with Kevin Hackwell of Forest & Bird, who said a mix of forestry and farming is the ideal solution.

There are often good reasons for farmers to plant trees, including diversification of income streams, better use of parts of the farm not suited to animals or cropping, erosion control, animal shelter, biodiversity and water quality.

But what we’re seeing in parts of the country – Wairoa, the Wairarapa, the central North Island, Gisborne and parts of Nelson/ Marlborough – is entire farms being bought up and planted out.

There are reports that Wairoa has already lost 7 per cent of its sheep and beef farmland to forestry; 30,000ha of farmland in the central North Island is being converted and Pamu (Landcorp) alone plans to convert 40005000ha in the next three years.

Perhaps the biggest factor in all of this is the government’s climate change policy and the ETS. With the $25 a tonne price ceiling for carbon dioxide due to be repealed in the next year or

so, and a government that is encouraging offsetting of emissions rather than pushing harder for Co2 emitters to switch to cleaner technologies, the lure of significant profits from carbon farming is heavily influencing land use and purchase decisions.

Remember that unless trees are left permanently in place, Co2 is only sequestered until harvest time.

So, we have a stop-gap environmental measure that allows the likes of Air NZ to buy up great swathes of productive farmland – still the biggest earner of foreign exchange for the nation – so that we can all continue to fly off for holidays in Bali and France.

The government has said on numerous occasions that it’s all about more trees being planted on marginal land. But that’s not what’s actually happening.

The government needs to urgently revisit its policy settings before the trends we’re seeing accelerate and do real damage to the rural economy and way of life.

■■CARROT HARVEST

Spokesman Daniel Lovett said stable weather had favoured fantastic harvesting conditions.

The carrots are harvested before being washed at the company’s wash plant at Wakanui.

They are then trucked to Juice Products New Zealand (JPNZ) in Timaru and sold as juice into the Japanese market.

The couple, who are contract milkers at Rangitata, also love to “take big jumps that might be a bit scary”.

Their business, Valleyfield Pastoral, stood for balance, profit, lifestyle, empowerment, future proofing and enjoyment – and those were their drivers.

Josh grew up on a dairy farm in the Wairarapa, but made the decision to get out of the family farm and explore other options.

He went to Massey University

and completed a degree in applied science. While there, he met his future wife who was in her last year studying resource environmental planning.

Straight from leaving university, they headed to a job in Tasmania.

Becs had never been on a dairy farm, let alone worked in the dairy industry.

They were working for a New Zealand equity partnership that had invested in Tasmania and was converting a dairy farm with 1300 cows. There were four equity partners involved and it was $1 million short on investment.

They were 100km from the

nearest dairy farm and nestled between two vast stations.

They certainly learned a lot and that included learning about equity partnerships and when the cows started being sold to pay their wages, they decided to move on. But one of the key things they learned was that they loved largescale dairy farming.

They entered the dairy industry awards and made the national finals and shifted to a Hawke’s Bay farm.

From there, they moved to a management position with Craigmore Farming, at Culverden, where they learned a lot concern-

ing multi-farm management.

They were at Culverden for six years before recently moving to Rangitata, where they are contract milking 780 cows for Rangitata Dairies, a corporate farming operation that owns 11,000 cows.

Having two young children, life is all about balance for them.

They are not out to work 80 hours a week – their goal is to work a 40-hour week – but that did not mean that they were not working hard, Josh said.

When it came to the criteria they looked for in a job, it was always concerning people and the people they would be working for.

“Are they driven? Balanced?

Can we see ourselves being comfortable having conversations with them ... are they successful?

Are there opportunities for personal development? We want to be industry leaders and we need to be continually challenging our thinking,” Becs said.

The couple believes if they could line up all those things, then the profit will come.

When it came to large-scale farming, an enjoyment of people was necessary.

“You have to love people. You’re going to be dealing with people every day,” she said.

By Guy Trafford In 1990 the government of the day invited Professor Michael Porter from Harvard University and author of The Competitive Advantage of Nations to come to New Zealand to discuss New Zealand’s economy and ways forward.

This was my introduction to the term competitive advantage (although a wellestablished principle by then, just not to me).

To the uninitiated it is basically what can we do well that other nations cannot do as well that gives us an economic advantage.

Coming from a more industrial and technological background it isn’t surprising that his focus was on these areas and innovation rather than focusing on agriculture.

However, his visit did, for at least the rank and file, provide a way of thinking which clarifies what may and may not work.

For the record, his main findings and recommendations were to increase productivity and domestic rivalry and competition to enable NZ to compete overseas.

When he returned in 1998, he said that the structural reforms New Zealand had undertaken were out of fear, and people have been scared and worried about survival. I’m not sure a lot has changed in that regard.

While New Zealand may not have the resources that other countries have with their abundance of minerals and coal, given the direction the world is moving, I think the natural resources we have are more valuable. When it comes to which is the “lucky country”, I believe New Zealand wins hands down.

Water and climate in the correct combination are, and will be increasingly so, gold in a world which will be increasingly short of water and the food it can produce.

New Zealand is 11th on the list of renewable water resources per head of capita and, with the exception of Canada which ranks above New Zealand, the rest arguably are constrained either by climate – several like Norway and Iceland for instance are limited in food production by winter extremes – and others, such as PNG and some equatorial countries, by a lack of development and also climate extremes at the other end of the spectrum.

So New Zealand with its “goldilocks” combination has a considerable natural competitive advantage.

So, when I hear people suggesting we should reduce cow numbers to reduce carbon emissions and see productive land going into trees. Worse still, land being zoned into urban, making it too expensive to farm, I can’t help but feel we are at risk of throwing the baby out with the bath water.

Yes 48 per cent of emissions come from agriculture and most of that livestock so it can’t be disregarded, but most of the remaining 52 per cent comes from the energy sector, notably transport, and it appears to be a glaring omission from many people’s discussion on how New Zealand can lower its total emissions.

Given that New Zealand is one of only a few countries that have a focus on livestock emissions likely means that progress in that area is going to be slow. Whereas, almost without exception, every other country is looking at reducing transport emissions so there should be some lowhanging fruit New Zealand can benefit from.

The problem is that it will require the general public to take greater responsibility and the cost that comes with it!

And given the current trend of populous politics, where everyone loves to hate the farmers, I don’t trust politicians to tackle the hard topic of making everyone accountable when there is a convenient

whipping boy available.

At the moment agriculture is not flavour of the month, but at some stage in the nottoo-distant future the country will be glad that it has its rural economy and the water.

Be it saved irrigation or from the skies, will be an important part of that scenario.

To those that point to dairying as requiring too great of a cost, I suspect that given time, variable climates worldwide, not to mention the raft of regulations the industry has to deal with, it will reduce it as a component of the ag picture and more plant-based production systems will move into the gaps.

However, this will take time (and water) and there are not the returns or systems out there to support such land use change and show a profit at the moment.

The fact that New Zealand can and, largely does, have the most naturally-based dairy farming system is one of the reasons Fonterra’s back-to-basics approach does frustrate me somewhat, as it is missing the opportunity of differentiating itself from the vast majority of dairy production worldwide, which has all the warts New Zealand dairy has plus a whole lot more.

There does appear to be some moves to try and take advantage of these natural advantages, but they seem to be on a fairly minor scale.

Whereas companies such as Synlait have grasped the opportunity far more fully.

The New Zealand meat companies also have made large steps down the same pathway and with a product less transformable than milk.

Given the opportunities our natural products are beginning to achieve in the world, we may be able to have our cake and eat it. A modest reduction in stocking rates will achieve a more natural system and the premiums that should accompany them and reduce environmental impacts along the way.

So, back to the original theme, New Zealand’s major competitive advantage comes from its ability to produce cheap, healthy food, of all types.

Let’s make sure that in the pursuit of satisfying the wider electorate with shortterm aims we don’t lose sight of that and throw the baby out with the bath water.

Markets A great week for meat producers with virtually all classes of meat lifting. The exceptions were mutton, which is holding on to its already solid prices, and venison which appears to be locked into its current price.

Sheep Both saleyards and schedules have lifted again and the lamb schedule is almost identical to the same time as last year, although the NZ dollar is below where it was last year.

What makes the strong schedule interesting is that the processors were warning farmers that they paid too much for lamb last year and farmers shouldn’t expect a repeat and yet here we are 12 months on and the prices are identical.

Wool Prices softened slightly at the sales and, although the finer grades lifted, it was on small amounts which have distorted the average somewhat.

Beef A very similar picture to sheep with both schedules and saleyard prices lifting for all grades of beef.

Venison The exception to other schedules with venison around $120 behind where it was at a similar time last year.

Dairy The biggest mover in dairy is the Fonterra share price which has continued its slide which began in January 2018. Not a rounding endorsement of the current policies.

Changes coming for Koru

You can buy Koru membership for $629 a year (plus a $255 joining fee) and some credit cards offer discounts on this.

It is not known whether Air

New Zealand will change earning rates or put up membership prices but it will aim to improve the experience for its most frequent flyers, often high-value business travellers.

And non-members can get in.

Airpoints Gold, Elite Partner and Koru members can bring one guest when travelling on Air New Zealand flights and children under the age of 12 travelling with an Airpoints Elite or Gold member, or Koru member, have complimentary access.

Business cabin passengers on Air New Zealand and its partner airlines, including Singapore Airlines, United and Cathay Pacific, also have access to its international lounge and the number of those who are travelling at the front end of the plane has increased.

This includes growing numbers of leisure travellers and families, increasing pressure on international lounges which have on tap substantial food, a range of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, TV lounges and showers.

Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon and the world’s richest man, is to pay $38bn to settle the divorce with his wife of nearly 26 years, MacKenzie Bezos. A judge is expected to rubber-stamp the world’s most expensive divorce settlement this week, confirming an agreement which will see Ms Bezos, taking a 4 per cent stake in the online shopping behemoth. The couple married in 1993, before Mr Bezos set up Amazon from his garage in Seattle. Ms Bezos, 49, has promised she will hand over at least half the gigantic settlement to charity.

“Yep went there two weekends ago with a group of special needs people.

“Firstly the door was opened no heat pump on, fricken cold. The food was good but the customer service was absolutely shocking!!

No ‘Hi how are you? ...Thanks for spending your money here.’

“Coffee and hot chocolates were shocking, cold overheated milk.

“Sloppy. Definitely won’t be going back. Nothing has changed since the last time I was there over 10 years ago.”

Another former customer gave her two cents’ worth, writing: “We went there you could feel the bad vibes in the shop the lady was very abrupt. I did ask her if she was having a bad day.

“The food is nice and they could do so well there if she wasn’t so rude.”

However, others disagreed with the backlash with a number of cur-

rent and former customers revealing their pleasant experiences with the cafe owners.

One woman revealed she’s never had a bad experience and says her grandchildren demand to go back.

“They have always been very polite to me and my grandchildren so much so the grandchildren would only want to go there and nowhere else. Lovely food and service.”

One fan of the cafe backed the owner’s behaviour, saying she only stands up to customers who treat the cafe with disrespect.

“Sounds like she’s actually a human! And I agree with everything that she’s said ... people treat hospitality workers like second class citizens.”

Despite the bad reviews and publicity, the Springfield Cafe has stayed in business in its spot on the tourist trail.

And now Kiwis who have followed the cafe’s shaky history say the bad publicity has put the town of Springfield on the maps.

“This woman has put Springfield on the map. People are talking about the last pit stop.

“People stop to watch or be part of the entertainment. Every other outfit tries to win the best cafe and pays for publicity. This couple have it all for free,” one woman wrote.

“I’m definitely going to stop not for a coffee or pie but for the abuse, great advertising,” another potential customer revealed.

One fan said “they put Gordon Ramsay to shame” but find the hostility appealing.

Ramsay ‘put to shame’ On Sunday “New Zealand’s rudest cafe” was hit with controversy after police visited the owners to offer “customer service advice” – now Kiwis have hit back revealing their own experiences at the Canterbury cafe.

The Springfield Store and Cafe, on the western edge of the Canterbury Plains, made headlines after receiving numerous “terrible” reviews on TripAdvisor.

In a recent review, Christchurch’s Col Henderson said “never have I struck such a rude person”.

“As Kiwis it is concerning that tourists get to experience this sort of service in our country.”

Now New Zealanders have hit out following the latest incident to reveal the truth of their own experiences at the controversial cafe, run by owners Donald and Karyn Cullingford.

Many former and current customers agreed with the numerous poor reviews, including allegations the cafe worker tried to get rid of a sparrow with fly spray.

“I’ve been there before and a sparrow was inside, so she told one of her workers to get fly spray and spray the sparrow to get rid of it.

“Unbelievable,” the former customer wrote.

A tourist also weighed in saying the owners made them feel uncomfortable.

“We will never return back to this cafe, all we could hear was the husband and wife arguing with one another and felt totally uncomfortable, was not the nicest way to start our holiday that’s for sure.”

Air New Zealand is emailing frequent flyers about changes to premium lounge rules which are under pressure from the growing number of passengers eligible to get in.

New rules are aimed at ensuring its most high value customers get a better deal at the same time as it’s about to get harder for those who earn points on some credit cards to access them.

The airline has surveyed its frequent flyers about the lounges and the most consistent complaint is that they are overcrowded. While the new measures will be welcomed by the airline’s elite clients, some who have had a taste of lounge comfort through credit card points face a let down.

Last week more problems emerged at its Auckland international lounge when “exceptionally heavy demand’’ meant some passengers were diverted away from its lounge into the airport company’s Strata Lounge.

While many passengers don’t mind the switch, others say they

have paid for Koru privileges and want to use them.

Peak travel times in the morning are the worst for overcrowding in the lounges.

Angry passengers have complained the airline’s lounges can at times resemble crowded food courts in shopping malls, packed with screaming children.

The airline and airport are still working with each other to find more space for the long-awaited expansion of Air New Zealand lounges, but have no details on when this could happen.

ANZ has already warned it will make it harder for some of its customers to get free passes to Air New Zealand lounges.

From July 10, Platinum Visa card holders will have to spend $30,000 on their card for two single entry passes, up from $20,000 now.

Overcrowding has been exacerbated by growing numbers of Air New Zealand’s 17 million passengers a year rising through the ranks of its Airpoints scheme which rewards frequent flyers at certain levels with lounge access.

Hell Pizza will be reminded of its obligations under the Food Act after selling fake meat pizzas to thousands of unwitting customers.

The fast food chain sold more than 3000 of its new Burger Pizzas last month, with most customers not realising its burger-like topping was made of Beyond Meat, a plantbased meat alternative. Now the Ministry for Primary Industries has stepped in, saying after several complaints it will be talking to Hell Pizza about “the importance of consumers being aware of ingredients so they can make informed decisions”.

■■ Preheat the oven to 190°C. Cook the Family Roast chicken according to packet instructions.

Remove from the oven and allow to rest for 10 minutes.

■■ Half an hour before the chicken is cooked, heat 1 tablespoon of the oil in a wide saucepan and quickly wilt the spinach leaves.

Set the spinach aside and wipe out the pan.

■■ Add the remaining oil and half the butter to the pan, then add the onion and fry gently until soft but not coloured (around 5-10 minutes).

■■ Add the rice and half the lemon zest, stir to coat with the oil and fry for a few minutes then add the wine and stir until all liquid has evaporated.

■■ Add the hot chicken stock, a ladleful at a time, stirring constantly until all the liquid is absorbed before adding the next

ladleful.

■■ Keep at a rapid simmer. Continue until the rice is al dente, adding extra liquid if needed. Add the peas in the last few minutes.

■■ Stir through the remaining butter and parmesan, add the spinach and lemon juice and season to taste. Cut up the chicken and serve with the risotto.

Teddy’s night at the museum

N

ext week we open our newest exhibition, Make, Do and Mend, which includes all sorts of creative ways that people have recycled and reused unexpected materials.

While the exhibition planning is almost complete and a new show being installed, at the same time we are already looking ahead to new activities and programmes for the school holidays.

One such activity begins on Tuesday, July 9, and runs overnight until Wednesday, July 10.

It’s a fun event that we ran last year, especially as it’s not often that can we say that a night at the museum is on offer.

But next Tuesday – and overnight – we’ll be holding our, now annual, teddy bears’ sleepover.

The idea is that we let some very brave teddies spend a night away from their human friends, provided they are well behaved, of course. Back home, friends and family can check in on the Ashburton Museum Facebook page overnight to see just what their teddies are up to.

The following day the humans are allowed to return and catch up with teddy. There will be games and snacks available for the humans and teddies. And it’s a good way to meet other teddies, and play while your teddy tells you all about their adventures.

A big night When we held the first teddy sleepover last year we had no idea how much work was involved. We soon discovered that it was quite a struggle, keeping all the participants entertained and controlled.

Who knew what mischief such creatures got up to at night? Luckily we have an excellent – and now experienced – toy wrangler on our team and he managed to ensure everyone had a great time and got home safely, if a little sleepily, the following day.

Apart from their energy, museum staff were surprised by which furry friends took part.

Gone are the days when children’s friends were only bear-shaped teddies; including all furry friends meant our overnight guests included dinosaurs and super heroes, even an All Black!

One very special bear had a night away from his best friend, both now are in their 80s.

It was all great fun and we look forward to hosting even more teddy guests this year.

Thinking back on the make, do and mend theme, I’m reminded that often the many activities happening at the museum come together as last year some of the friends of the more elderly teddies needed advice on how to mend their companions.

My highlight was being able to restore the sight of one aged teddy whose eye had been carefully put in a bag for many years.

I was also interested to see amongst the teddies in our museum collection how often small

You will be able to keep up on what they’re doing through our Facebook page, where photos of all their shenanigans will be posted throughout the night.

Teddies can be picked up from the museum at 9.30am the following day, where we will have a shared morning tea (bring a plate) and crafts available for teddies to do with their humans.

New AB jersey ‘primo’

NZME From a distance, it looks much the same as any All Blacks jersey.

But see it up close, and the intricate black-on-black design might just surprise you.

Paying homage to both Maori and Japanese cultures, the new-look strip tributes the legacy of players who have worn the jersey in the past and represents the younger players coming through.

As one of a select few All Blacks granted the privilege to model the new jersey at its launch yesterday in Auckland, All Black halfback Aaron Smith has heaped praise over the innovative design.

“Sometimes black can be a bit boring,” Smith said at the launch yesterday. But they’ve made this jersey look primo.

“The normal black jersey is always exciting for Kiwis but with the silver fern on it, it just makes it extra special.”

The jersey features a round black collar with the All Blacks logo over the heart and sponsor Adidas in the middle of the chest to accommodate the World Cup logo.

Proud history goes on the line

Methven’s proud netballing history goes on the line tonight at the EA Networks Centre.

After finishing last at the end of the second round of Mid Canterbury Netball’s premier one competition, Methven A found themselves in the position no team wanted to be, having to fight for their premier one lives in a promotion/relegation game.

And it well and truly will be a battle, with the team lining up on the court next to last year’s premier one runners-up tonight being another proud netballing side, Southern A, a team that

came so close to being promoted at the end of round one.

Promotion and relegation were automatic at the end of round one, and which team would be promoted to premier one came down to the final game of the round between Southern A and United A. Both were teams that had been relegated to premier two in 2018, and both were determined to get back there, but it was United A that came out on top in that game to be promoted, and since then they had gone on to prove their worth in premier one, winning the top grade’s second round.

Meanwhile, Southern A con-

tinued their winning ways in premier two, finishing round two unbeaten to claim that top spot and give themselves the opportunity to win their way back into premier one.

It meant that Southern A headed into tonight’s game as a team well used to winning, whereas Methven A headed into it off the back of five straight losses in round two, after finishing round one in second spot on the ladder.

One of the biggest changes for Methven A from round one had been the absence of star shooter Leanne Clemens, who had been overseas and will return part-way through the season’s third and fi-

nal championship round.

But Methven A coach Maree Firth said Clemens was just one of seven players on the court, and Methven A still had a more than capable team without her there.

Things just hadn’t come together for them in the past few weeks.

She said it was obviously disappointing to go from finishing second in round one, to sixth in round two, but that was how it was.

Now, they simply had to focus on fending off the challenge Southern A had to offer tonight, to keep their place in premier one.

“We just have to keep our heads

really, and play good, structured netball,” Firth said.

“We can’t take them lightly.”

United A were the team in the same position as Methven A last year. They took on Celtic B in the promotion/relegation match, and lost.

Tonight’s game between Methven A and Southern A will hit the court at 7.30pm.

The full promotion relegation round draw for tonight is: 6.30pm – Hampstead C v Celtic C, Hampstead Under-18 v Ashburton College Under-18B; 7.30pm - Methven A v Southern A, Ashburton College Year 10B v Allenton Under-18.

Televised discussion heats up over men’s netball team TVNZ presenter Hayley Holt was called out for “discriminating” against men’s sport in a heated onair debate with renowned sports journalist Scotty Stevenson.

Stevenson and Holt were discussing last week’s historic clash between the Silver Ferns and the New Zealand Men’s Invitational team in the Cadbury Netball Se-

ries live on Breakfast on Friday morning.

The men’s side, which went on to take out the series with an 11-goal win over the Silver Ferns in the grand final on Saturday, earned high praise for their performances, with many netball fans delighted by the challenge they gave the Ferns ahead of the Netball World

Cup. But when Stevenson shared a similar view while appearing on Breakfast, Holt hit back, calling the match “weird”.

“How good was that game last night,” Stevenson said before Holt rebutted.

“Unfortunately for the Silver Ferns, they don’t need men to actually push them anymore be-

cause they get pushed by everybody,” she said.

Shocked by the comment, Stevenson quickly questioned Holt’s stance.

“So the New Zealand men’s team who never get television coverage, who are not recognised by the international netball federation, get the chance to play on the biggest

stage against these Silver Ferns and you’re saying it’s a bad idea?” he asked.

“They’re taller, they’re heavier, they can throw the ball harder, I just think it’s weird,” replied Holt.

The Silver Ferns depart for Liverpool this week ahead of their opening Netball World Cup game against Malawi on July 12.

Champions on the mats

Two indoor bowlers added another championship title each to their already glittering list of achievements on the mats in Ashburton at the weekend.

Grant Wilson and Graeme Chapman won respective singles titles on Saturday at the McNally Street Stadium, seeing off some strong competition in the process during a competitive day of play.

In the open Jim Patterson singles, Wilson emerged on top of a small, but select field of players.

Qualifying rounds were held on Friday night and Saturday morning with Wilson and Michael Lawson advancing from the field of four on Friday night and Chris Talbot and Jeff Nowell working their way through from the field of four on Saturday morning.

Eight entries for the event was a disappointing turnout especially given the two possible options of playing qualifying games.

With four competing for the finals, Wilson beat Chris Talbot in one match while Lawson accounted for Nowell.

In the final Lawson and Wilson traded blows until the latter extended out to a four shot lead playing the last end, leaving Lawson requiring a maximum score to level the match up and force an extra end.

Lawson managed to sit with the required four shots after his last bowl, but Wilson was able to drop the count to three shots, giving him the victory and his 12th centre title.

Saturday’s other event, the Ken Hampton Masters Singles, a new event on the calendar, saw Chapman emerge on top from a field of 14 players.

Six players qualified for post-section play from the four rounds of qualifying.

Graeme Chapman claimed his 22nd Ashburton Indoor Bowls title at the weekend when winning the Ken Hampton Masters Singles.

For King it was her eighth national title as she defeated second seed Amanda Landers-Murphy from Rotorua 11-2, 11-4, 11-6, not that she knew how many titles she had won.

“Eight? Really. I didn’t know that. I thought it was seven.

“It’s actually hard to play Amanda. She’s such a nice person.

“It’s hard to play someone you really like.

“It’s nice to play in New Zealand which I hadn’t done for a while, so it was great to play in front of a home crowd.

“It’s pretty cool to win your national title,” said King who is now

King, 30 dominated Landers-Murphy who struggled to find any rhythm as the top seed kept up the pace of the match and had an answer to anything that

her opponent hit at her.

In the men’s final it was the man from Greymouth, 27-year-old Coll, winning his fifth title as he overcame second seed and one of the most consistent men of

the sport over the past few years, Campbell Grayson, 11-3, 11-7, 11-4 controlling the pace of the game and never letting Grayson work the front of the court.

On the rare occasion Grayson gained the front he found the retrieving ability of his rival frustrating to say the least.

The large crowd at Unitec in Auckland were impressed to see players ranked as high as No.6 in the world work the points in both men’s and women’s final and lead the way for the future.

One of the pleasing aspects of the tournament was the emergence of several younger professional players such as Lwamba Chileshe, but also the return of Megan Craig and Lana Harrison who came back after having children and made the semi-finals.

Selectors keeping the faith

By Niall Anderson Whether they have one, two, or three games left at the Cricket World Cup, the Black Caps are set to pick Martin Guptill and Tom Latham in their starting XI for every encounter.

That’s the Black Caps’ ethos – have faith in the experienced campaigners with proven track records – and they’re not straying from it, despite both Guptill and Latham being embroiled in batting slumps.

Guptill has shown glimpses – he started the tournament with an unbeaten 73 against Sri Lanka, made 35 against South Africa before standing on his stumps, and has reached 20 on two further occasions.

Two first-ball ducks and a mere five against Pakistan blot the scorebook, but Guptill has a history of emerging from funks with big performances, and the Black Caps are keeping faith in one of New Zealand’s greatest ODI batsmen.

Latham’s situation is slightly less cut-and-dried.

Coming into the World Cup having just recovered in time from a fractured finger, Latham hasn’t passed 15 in his six innings at the World Cup, a shocking run only slightly mitigated by having been inserted into a few tricky scenarios where he had to deal with a rapidly rising required run rate, or was required to play aggressively from ball one.

However, the Black Caps dropping one of their most credentialed batsmen and vice-captain for the uncapped Tom Blundell would have been unfathomable at the start of the tournament; a reasonable indicator of a decision that would be rashly made.

And, while Latham’s run of form is his worst since returns of 4, 7, 0, 0, 2, 0 and 15 when opening the batting in 2017, you only have to look at his next four ODI innings after that slump – 54, 104, 84 and 103 not out – to see why Black Caps batting coach Craig McMillan is tipping a return to form.

“One thing you notice about World Cups and tournament play – you have fluctuations in terms of form throughout a tournament,

PHOTO AP and you’ve just got to ride with that,” said McMillan.

“Obviously both those players are a touch short on runs but we’re actually quite excited by the fact we haven’t quite clicked as a batting unit yet, but we’re still at this point in the tournament where we’ve got one game left and if we win that, we know we’re dead certs for a semi-final.

“They’re two players that we

have a lot of trust in, they’ve done the job for us over a period of years, and we’re backing them to come good.”

With Kane Williamson having a stellar tournament and Ross Taylor, Jimmy Neesham and Colin de Grandhomme all having contributed runs, McMillan knows how timely and pivotal a boost from Guptill and Latham could be for the Black Caps’ chances of claim-

ing a major victory as the tournament reaches the business end.

As India plodded towards defeat, Ganguly was critical saying: “I don’t have an explanation for that. You asked me the question but I can’t explain these singles.

“You can’t be chasing 338 and still have five wickets in the end.

It’s about mindset and the way you look at the game.

“The message had to be clear: no matter where it comes and no matter where the ball lands you have to find the boundary. A dot ball at this stage!.”

Former England captain Hussain agreed, saying: “I am completely baffled. What’s going on!

This is not what India needed.

What are they doing?

“Some Indian fans are leaving now. Surely they must want to see Dhoni go for his shots, even if he slogs it off in the air. It’s a World Cup game, top two sides, give it a go!

“Indian fans would want their side to go down with a fight. Risk it to win it.”

One Twitter wag joked that a measured innings from Dhoni had left India in a great position for the next day.

First blood to the Allstars

By Adam Hamilton It only took Mark Purdon one race to stamp himself on the Queensland Winter Carnival.

Purdon and co-trainer Natalie Rasmussen’s first two runners this raid – Self Assured and Jesse Duke – snared the quinella at the Albion Park meeting on Saturday night.

The quinella came the day after the Allstars’ glamour filly Our Princess Tiffany blazed her way to a 1min51.4sec trial win for 1660m at Albion Park to show she was right on target.

The hype around the Aussie-owned Self Assured continued to grow despite his third win from as many starts only being by a whisker over Jesse Duke after trailing the last-start Jewels winner throughout and getting last shot at him.

Self Assured, the latest exciting pacer raced by Victoria’s Jean Feiss, was privately-timed to run his last quarter in a scorching 25.9sec.

“We were rolling along and he did a good job to get up,” Purdon said.

Jesse Duke made him earn it, peeling off a 53.9sec last half in front after driver Kylie Rasmussen dictated terms in front.

It’s going to take something special to stop the Allstars winning the Queensland Derby and Oaks judging by Princess Tiffany’s trial and the fact Self Assured and Jesse Duke are Derby-bound.

“Princess Tiffany will be lining up next week and we’ll have one of these boys (Jesse Duke or Self Assured) in the Premiers’ Cup next week as well,” Purdon said.

Max Verstappen bounced back from a disastrous start and survived a nervous wait post-race to to claim an incredible win at the Austrian Grand Prix yesterday.

The Dutchman was made to delay his celebrations when stewards investigated an incident late in the race which threatened to rob the young gun of his first win for the season.

Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc led for much of the 71-lap race but on lap 68 he and Verstappen collided when the Red Bull star took the inside on Turn Three.

The pair bumped into each other and Leclerc went off the track, causing him to complain over the team radio.

“What the hell is that,” he yelled.

But Verstappen was able to breathe a sigh of relief when stewards finally made a decision in their investigation more than two hours after the grand prix finished, saying they “did

not consider that either driver was wholly or predominantly to blame for the incident. We consider that this is a racing incident”.

Verstappen’s breakthrough win means the freakish streak of Mercedes is over after a stunning dogfight between two drivers widely considered to be the future of the sport.

The Mercedes pair of Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas sitting on the second row had overtaken Verstappen as he dropped down in the pack.

The commentators called it an “atrocious start” but Red 63.5mm x 63.5mm Bull’s main man soon flew back into contention.

A memorable fight with Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel and Bottas was just the appetiser as Verstappen and Leclerc fought for supremacy.

The win for Red Bull was also the first for the team with the Honda engine after switching from Renault this season.

When the EA Networks Centre threw out the challenge of a table tennis give-it-a-go day they headed very much into the unknown of what might unfold.

But when the dust settled on bringing the sport to Ashburton’s main recreation facility on Sunday, there were only positive results reported, with big numbers and plenty of enjoyment for both

young and old on offer.

Around 70 people showed up to take part in the day, which was a huge result for organisers and Ashburton District Council service delivery group manager, Neil McCann said there was a wide variety of people there.

“We had a really good mix of people come along with varying ages and experience levels at the playing the sport, which was great.”

Organisers knew the event was going to be popular judging by reaction on social media, but they never quite expected the numbers to surge to the point where people would be waiting to get a turn on one of the 12 tables set out for the day.

“Looking across the room it looked great, there were a lot of people having a lot of fun which was the ultimate goal of the day,” McCann said.

While Sunday was very much a give-it-a-go day, McCann said that it set the platform for more events of a similar nature going forward and potentially even more opportunities further down the track.

“I think we have to call it a success.

“We’ve already put plans down to hold another afternoon later in the month but we’re yet to lock down a date and a time.

“And then who knows after that.

“Quite a few people have expressed an interest in getting back into the competitive side of things, but we will need to do some work on figuring out what the best way to go forward is in that regard.”

It was a busy day at the EA Networks Centre on Sunday with five sports being played across the venue.
