People keen to make changes The fifth annual Back to Basics Expo drew a crowd of 400 people on Saturday, all keen to make changes in their lives.

Organiser Julia Crossen said stallholders were there to showcase their products, but also to help people make their own.

“There was such a buzz about the place and for me it is about people making connections. It doesn’t have to be just a day of learning but a day they can follow up on.”

Stallholders shared advice about dehydrating fruit and vegetables, making soup stock, using old bananas, spinning, preserves and tramping. There was also an emphasis on removing packings from people’s daily lives through the use of beeswax wrap and the Japanese art of wrapping furoshiki.

“You can take a square metre of fabric and carry anything.”

Crossen said there were also stalls devoted to healthy eating and relaxed kids.

“There was a real cross section of generations … young people with babies and older people.

Some of the younger ones would not have seen these basics modelled.”

There was also budget advice, aimed at encouraging people to be financially prepared.

Crossen said it was also a chance for people to ask questions and pick up tips, anything from where to buy bulk baking soda and Epson salts to where to find a You Tube video on mulching.

She said the fifth edition of the expo continued to draw positive comments.

Maria Swindley demonstrated how to make a hearty vegetable stock and soup from leftover vegetable scraps at the Back to Basics Expo.

Chance to get off the farm

Chch council wants help to fund stadium

The rural lifestyle of the Canterbury Plains will combine with the proud history of harness racing this month at the Ashburton Trotting Club for a Get off the Farm Day. With recent events relating to mycoplasma bovis and stress on farmers locally, key individuals, including well known local rural spokesperson Craig Wiggins, in conjunction with Rural Support Trust and Federated Farmers, have put together a Farming Family Day at the Races at the Ashburton Trotting Club meeting on July 15.

The idea is based on the premise of getting rural families off the farm for a day and into a relaxed and enjoyable situation after some challenging times across all of the rural sector in recent times.

Ashburton Trotting Club president Craig Harrison said the Ashburton Trotting Club were excited to be on board with the event.

“For us, it was a no-brainer, as soon as Craig Wiggins suggested it we were on board,” he said.

“We live in such a strong rural community and know just how hard it has been recently for a lot of people, so hopefully we

can put together a day for them where they can relax and enjoy themselves.”

The day is open to anyone with a rural address and is involved with primary industry in Canterbury with the Facebook event set up to ensure that numbers are known before the event.

The club, along with other supporting businesses, will provide food, refreshments, losing ticket spot prizes, children’s entertainment and they hope to have some accommodation packages to give away on the day.

tion, with a rural flavour, will also be held.

Those who attend the functions will get the chance to meet top harness racing drivers and trainers as well as many other sporting celebrities while enjoying a family-friendly atmosphere.

Anyone who is planning to attend the day is asked to register via the Facebook page/event, Farming Families Day at the Races to ensure enough catering is available.

The first race will be at 11.30am and the day will finish around 5pm with entry free.

■ EDUCATION

Principals criticise NCEA review Education Minister Chris Hipkins says four months is long enough for a review of NCEA but says he is open to extending it in the wake of an open protest letter by 40 Auckland secondary school principals.

The principals are calling for the review to reviewed.

“We think that is a reasonably good consultation period time,” Hipkins told reporters at Parliament yesterday.

“If at the end of that people are still saying ‘hey, we don’t feel like we’ve had the chance to have our voices heard’, then we certainly open to discussing that further.

“We don’t want to rush this. We do want to make sure that everybody who has got a view has the opportunity to participate in the process.”

He made his comments in the wake of a full-page ad in the Herald on Sunday giving the minister a “Fail” on the NCEA review.

“Too rushed Minister Hipkins,” the ad said. “Not enough thought. Must do better for our young people.”

The principals are not opposed

Chris Hipkins to the review, and in fact say it is necessary for improvements.

“But the review is flawed and we will not stand idle on the sidelines watching a fraught process pass us by.”

They say there has been a lack of process with secondary

school principals. Students aged 5 to 18 had been targeted to enter competitions to “express themselves”, with prizes valued at over $27,000.

“We suggest that those with experience in the sector (teachers and principals) should have been asked directly for feedback.

“We are the guardians of young people’s secondary school education and believe our input is essential.”

Hipkins said that the review was not just about principals and the review panel of seven had to involve everybody in it.

“We want to hear from principals and we want to hear from young people. I do disagree with the principals’ view that the voices of young people are not important in this process.

“Ultimately it is their futures we are talking about.”

Hipkins said the principals’ reference in the ad to the contribution of young voices could be read a number of different ways.

He had been “a little disappointed” when he saw the open protest letter in the paper but

they would be given ample opportunity to be fully engaged with the process.

“This is not a pre-determined review. We’ve basically put some big ideas out there. That was done by an independent review panel. The Government has not made any decisions about what the future of the NCEA might look like.”

Hipkins said some of the names of principals on the open letter were not a surprise.

“Their views on NCEA are well known – they are much more traditional in their thinking. We do want to hear from them but also want to hear from people with different views.”

The principals said two things needed to happen: Fix the teacher supply and establish a consensus on the curriculum.

“With teacher supply secured and a curriculum in place, we would have a sound foundation to improve the existing NCEA assessment system.

“The starting point should be direct consultation with second school principals.”

Ashburton ratepayers could end up contributing to Christchurch’s new multisport stadium, depending on the outcome of talks in September.

Ashburton Mayor Donna Favel said there was currently no interest among councillors for the district to contribute to the $500 million complex, but the Christchurch City Council planned to provide a formal request for funds later in the year.

The idea of a regional rate to help fund the project was raised last year.

Favel said councillors had discussed it and were in no mood to provide funds. “We are still finishing off our own stadium.”

But the district council would revisit the matter when the city council provided more detail. Until then, the matter is speculation.

Favel said she had brought the subject up at public meetings earlier this year with “a couple of people” showing support for some sort of payment.

Two submitters to council’s long-term plan recently were divided on the issue. James Thomas supported paying a small amount to the Christchurch stadium as Mid Canterbury residents would benefit from it.

Ted and Helen Eccleston said Christchurch residents used Lake Hood in large numbers yet made no contribution to it.

The Christchurch council has earmarked $253m for the project, with central Government also contributing.

The city has been without a large events stadium since the February 2011 earthquake damaged AMI Stadium. The new stadium site is bounded by Madras, Barbadoes, Hereford and Tuam streets.

Decisions have not yet been made on designs, though a roofed stadium is likely.

Investigation into cruelty

A Northland contract milker caught on hidden cameras hitting dairy cows with a pipe in the milking shed on the farm where he works, used to manage a large dairy herd in Mid Canterbury.

The man, who is the subject of a complaint to MPI over the incident, appeared in an advertising feature in Dairy Focus, published by the Ashburton Guardian, last June.

In the article, which promoted a vitamin supplement for cows, he said he had been farming for 40 years.

On Friday MPI confirmed that it received video footage on June 21 and immediately began an investigation.

“The cruelty displayed in footage is totally unacceptable and of serious concern to MPI,” acting director compliance services Gary Orr said.

“It is not representative of how cows are treated during milking by dairy farmers.

“It was actively being investigated when Farmwatch supplied the footage to the media.

MPI executed a search warrant at the property yesterday and we inspected all the animals on the property and we interviewed a person. The investigation continues and we cannot supply further information on the investigation

MPI has measures in place to deal with people who don’t comply with the Animal Welfare Act and Codes of Welfare. When we get information about illtreatment of animals, we investigate. When there is offending, people are held to account.”

As a result of the video footage, the farm owners released a statement on Friday that said as lifelong and committed dairy farm-

ers they were shocked and deeply saddened about the treatment of the cows.

“We have been in contact with MPI, Fonterra and Dairy NZ and we will co-operate fully with the formal investigation into this matter.

“As of today (Friday) the contract milker concerned has been removed from all duties requiring unsupervised contact with stock pending the outcome of due process with regard to our contractual obligations.”

Earlier, both DairyNZ and the

Dairy Companies Association of New Zealand (DCANZ) also spoke out against the treatment.

DairyNZ’s strategy leader Dr Jenny Jago said the well-being of animals is at the heart of every dairy farm.

“It is not okay to treat any animal poorly – ever – and the vast majority of farmers care deeply about their animals,” Jago said.

“This footage is disturbing and it has been reported that a complaint has been laid. This type of appalling behaviour is absolutely not representative of the thousands of farmers that work with cows every day and are passionate about animal welfare.

“Cruel and illegal practices are not in any way condoned or accepted by the dairy sector as part of dairy farming. If a farmer treats their cows badly, they shouldn’t be working in the dairy sector. It’s as simple as that.”

DCANZ said animal welfare is of upmost importance to New Zealand dairy companies and there was no excuse for mistreatment of animals and no place for those who mistreat animals in the dairy industry.

“New Zealand has a world leading framework for animal welfare and the Dairy Companies Association of New Zealand supports MPI taking strong compliance action to enforce it, including in this case.”

Auckland fuel tax kicks in as prices show hike Auckland’s fuel tax appears to be kicking in as petrol prices begin to hike.

Downtown motorists have been among the first to feel the hit with the BP on Fanshawe Street raising its Regular 91 price from $2.18 yesterday to $2.30 today, according to cheap-fuelfinding app Gaspy.

Prices at fellow inner-city stations, Mobil on Karangahape

Road and BP 2go on Jervois Road, are also among Auckland’s most expensive, with Regular 91 selling for $2.33. At the airport, Regular 91 is going for $2.33 at the Z stations on George Bolt Memorial Drive and Tom Pearce Drive.

Auckland’s most expensive outlet is Z at Riverhead, with Regular 91 selling at $2.36, according to Gaspy.

It comes as Auckland Council’s

regional fuel levy of 11.5 cents a litre took effect for the first time at midnight on Saturday.

Money raised from the levy will go towards funding a range of transport infrastructure in the Auckland region.

Yet, despite its introduction, motorists shopping around can still find a better deal.

BP 2go in Mangere appears to have the best deal in town, sell-

ing Regular 91 for $1.72, more than 20c cheaper than any other station.

However, no one could be reached at the store to confirm it. t Titirangi petrol station Gull was next best, selling Regular 91 for $1.99 and diesel for $1.28 – the same as Saturday.

Gull stations elsewhere around the city also appear to have the best prices.

In brief Stabbed in face A man was stabbed in his face and underarm after an incident at a Hamilton property. A police spokeswoman said officers were called to a Dryden Road property to assist ambulance staff about 6.45pm on Friday after learning the man had been stabbed. The 21-year-old man suffered wounds under his arm and on his face. He was taken to Waikato Hospital in a moderate condition. A 20-yearold man at the property has since been charged with possession of an offensive weapon and is due to appear in Hamilton District Court on Thursday.

Woman missing Waikato police are still seeking a Hamilton woman not seen in nearly 36 hours. Stephanie King, 39, was last seen about 7.30am on Saturday leaving her Hamilton home by bus. King’s disappearance is unusual as it was out of character for her not to be in touch with family. She has contacts in Hamilton and the wider Waikato district.

Fire investigated A fire which killed an elderly man in Ardmore was likely started by an electric blanket he had wrapped around himself. Fire and Emergency New Zealand said the cause of the fire, which broke out in the early hours of Wednesday morning had not been confirmed, but an electric blanket, the remains of which were found in a chair, was the most likely cause. The man was known to wrap the blanket around himself to relieve lower back pain.

The remains of a second electric blanket and an electric heater were also found in the fire ruins. Fire and Emergency national adviser for fire risk management Peter Gallagher said the death was a tragic reminder to people to take care combating winter chills.

Rescue skills put to test Personnel from Methven LandSAR and Mt Hutt Helicopters were part of a large-scale avalanche response exercise near Mt Cheeseman on Saturday.

Canterbury Police SAR co-ordinator acting sergeant Paul Beaver said there was a danger of avalanche at any time there is sufficient snow on a slope.

“Avalanches occur naturally all the time, however in the majority of cases where people get caught in an avalanche they have trig-

gered it themselves. It’s vital that you are aware of the danger and know how to avoid avalanche terrain.

He said time was critical for anyone buried in an avalanche and their best chance of survival was a companion rescue.

“So we encourage people to always carry the right equipment – avalanche transceiver, probe and shovel – and know how to use them.”

When emergency services are

called upon to respond to an avalanche, planning and co-ordination between police and other emergency services can mean the difference between life and death.

Police formed the Canterbury Avalanche Response Group in 2010 to provide a pool of people with the right skill sets to respond to an avalanche incident.

The group consists of local ski industry organisations, ski areas and guiding operations, Garden City Helicopters and Mt Hutt Hel-

icopters, Methven LandSAR, Arthur’s Pass SAR and the LandSAR Alpine and Cliff Rescue team from Christchurch, Mt Cook and Fox. The group developed a Canterbury Avalanche Response Plan and Saturday’s exercise was designed to test the plan and assess the groups’ readiness to respond.

Operation CARE simulated a number of people being caught in an avalanche and the response involved a group of about 50 people.

The first phase of an avalanche

is the survival phase. Most people are still alive for the first 10 minutes, which is a crucial phase for companion rescuers.

The majority of people who survive the first phase die from asphyxia in phase two, which lasts up to 35 minutes.

Rescue teams can make a difference in the next phase by getting on site quickly.

The fourth phase, at least 90 minutes after burial, is when people succumb to hypothermia.

■ FAMILIES PACKAGE

PM announces govt’s new Families Package Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has spoken to the public for the first time since leaving hospital after the birth of her child a week ago.

Ardern posted a Facebook livestream of herself, holding her “human hot water bottle” baby Neve, to share her excitement about the Government’s Families Package which came into effect yesterday.

The package worth more than $5 billion was one of the “most significant changes” to the welfare system that had been made in decades, she said.

“This is the thing I am most proud of.”

Families with newborn babies would be $60 better off a week, she said.

“It’s really an acknowledgement about that being such an important period.

“Best start I am so, so proud of, from that time that it was designed on the floor of my friend’s home in Hastings, we tested it with a lot of people, worked it through and it stood the test of time.

“I think the principle behind it is really, really solid.”

The Families Package, which was funded by cancelling the previous National government’s planned tax cuts, will cost $5.53 billion over five years.

■ LIONS CLUB OF ASHBURTON

Milestone recognised The Lions Club of Ashburton has marked 100 years of Lions International worldwide by planting a tree in the Ashburton Domain.

The Lions 2017 year finished on Saturday, June 30, so on Friday afternoon a group of club members met at the domain to plant a liquid amber tree to recognise

the achievement. As well as the tree, a new bench, made at the Ashburton Menz Shed, now also graces the area nearby, along with a plaque to mark the occasion.

Club member Rex Whiting said thanks were due to the Ashburton District Council for providing space and approval for the planting.

The Government estimates that by 2020/21, when the package is fully rolled out, some 384,000 families with children will be better off by about $75 a week.

It is projected to lift the number of children living out of poverty by 64,000, or about 41 per cent, by 2020.

New pest management plan

The new Canterbury Regional Pest Management Plan came into force yesterday aimed at preventing existing pests like broom and gorse from proliferating and stopping new pests entering the region.

The new plan puts more responsibility on individual landowners.

Environment Canterbury Councillor Tom Lambie said pest management and biosecurity were important areas for regional councils and ECan now ranked biosecurity alongside water man-

agement as a priority.

“It is testament to the hard work of many people, and consideration by many members of the community, that we now have a plan that is fit to meet our current and future pest management challenges.”

A comprehensive review of the previous pest management plan was undertaken to make sure the right rules were in place to manage existing and emerging pest threats, and to prevent damage to biodiversity and production.

“The previous plan focused

mainly on managing legacy pests that affect production land, such as broom, gorse, rabbits, wallaby and nassella tussock,” Lambie said.

“The emphasis in the new plan is therefore on maintaining efforts to prevent existing pests from proliferating, while also increasing the focus on stopping new pests entering the region and becoming established.

“This approach will help us become more resilient, with pests managed for both production land and biodiversity protection

purposes. The review also made sure our plan is aligned with neighbouring regions to help prevent new pests arriving here.”

The new direction places more responsibility on individual landowners to manage pests on their properties themselves, with ECan’s efforts focusing more on preventing pest spread to neighbouring properties.

The regional council will have a leadership role, with extra emphasis on advice, education and working with the community.

Model planes put through their paces Model plane owners from all around the South Island gathered in Mid Canterbury at the weekend for the Ashburton Model Aero Club’s annual fly-in.

Organiser Brian Mitchell said 33 owners were registered to fly at the club’s headquarters on Lovetts Road and owners and spectators were treated to some impressive flying displays.

Aircraft included both airplanes and helicopters, all radio controlled.

Mitchell said one of the largest craft was an aerobatic plane with a 3-4m wingspan and powered by a twin-cylinder 20cc petrol motor.

There was also a jet with turbine engines.

He said most owners bought their aircraft in kitset form then assembled and painted their creations.

Some were capable of flying at 100km/h.

Aircraft at the fly-in were restricted to flying below 400ft (121.9m) though most cruised lower so they were visible to the spectators.

Mitchell said brilliant flying weather over the weekend helped ensure the fly-in was a success; there was also plenty of time for sharing flying stories.

In brief Three-car crash Emergency services attended a three-car crash in Remuera, where it is believed one person has been freed from a vehicle.

Fire and Emergency NZ confirmed that three cars had been involved in the collision on Middleton Road. The incident happened at the intersection of Lauriston Avenue and Middleton Road. A St John spokeswoman said two ambulances went to the crash about 11.40am. One patient was transported to Auckland Hospital with moderate injuries.

The person who shot a 52-year-old man in Invercargill on Saturday is still at large, police say. The victim in the shooting is now out of surgery and is in a stable condition.

He was found with a gunshot wound on Kelvin Street at around 9.15am on Saturday. Southern police said they were still in the early stages of their investigation, and the offender has not been located. The Armed Offenders Squad was called yesterday as a precaution yesterday. But police said yesterday there was no threat to public safety following the shooting. Officers were interviewing several witnesses to the incident.

Fifteen students will be indulging in three weeks of thespian immersion next July, working with the Royal Shakespeare Theatre and the Royal Academy of Performing Arts and performing in locations like the Globe Theatre and the Southbank Festival.

The trip will celebrate 10 very successful years since the local youth theatre company launched, and give the young actors the chance to share their world-topping talents following huge success in their Trinity College exams.

After a fundraising idea thinka-thon last week, company director Jackie Heffernan said it was all feeling scarily ‘do-able’.

“With lots of peoples’ imagination it’s starting to feel like, crikey, we can do this.”

The actors themselves had generated a number of bright ideas – from a murder mystery night to a

“But we’re trying to do give the fundraising an entertainment flavour as much as possible.”

First on the cards are drama classes for the school holidays, run by students, open to all budding actors and held at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre.

Within Big Little Theatre Com-

pany, senior students are already required to complete a mentoring and teaching role.

The upcoming holidays will be a good opportunity for them to gain experience, while also putting all proceeds towards their trip, Heffernan said.

Classes will be held throughout the first week of the holidays from 9.30am to 3.30pm, and participants can join in the morning or afternoon sessions, or stay for

the whole day, or for the whole week, she said.

If there is enough interest, the classes will continue into the second week of the holidays.

If you’ve got an art project hiding away in your garage or you’ve been nursing a secret knack for photography, Brent Holley wants to hear from you.

The Grace Gallery owner is hosting an ‘art challenge’ to get the community’s creative juices flowing.

At the end of next month, he will be accepting entries of any art form, for indoors or outdoors, for an exhibition that will run throughout August.

The only prerequisite: that all work measures 30cm by 30cm.

“It could be painting, photography, anything,” Holley said.

Anyone residing in Mid Canterbury can enter, and work supplied will be for sale to gallery visitors, he said.

“I want people to get out there and not underestimate their abilities. I think a lot of artists are good at that.”

Winter is also the perfect time to get creative, he said.

Holley is currently seeking sponsorship so he can dish out prizes to the top entries.

Each person must complete a entry form with their art entry, available from Grace Gallery or via email, and works can be delivered between July 25 and 28.

“If you’ve got a friend who you think is pretty good at art, give them a nudge,” he said.

How The Press managed to produce a newspaper on the day after the Christchurch earthquake, still amazes me.

With their offices in tatters, and staff huddled over one laptop in the middle of Latimer Square, the team managed to put something together and it became one of the most important papers ever produced in the history of The Press.

What that, and the efforts of The Capital team last week, is that you can’t stop the news – and that the actions of one will never be enough to stop the news from happening.

And long may that continue.

Mid Canterbury shows the way I

f you think this is going to be just another light and fluffy column about how well our country holds up in a time of crisis, unfortunately you’re wrong.

Thirty weeks out of every year I travel to Wellington to attend Parliament – up on a Tuesday morning and back on a Thursday night.

Much of what you see of us as politicians comes from the one hour a day when Parliament’s question time is held.

It can be petty, aggressive, and frankly pretty ugly – not the best advertisement for us as a democracy.

But the rest of the time, our Parliament functions quite well.

Cohesive and constructive, you could even argue.

One of the things I’ve found most valuable as a relatively new MP is talking to colleagues about what goes on in their districts.

Given the significance of the mycoplasma bovis outbreak in recent months, much of our

conversation naturally turns to that topic.

Some of the stories, I hate to say, aren’t pretty.

In some areas of the country where mycoplasma bovis has been found, parts of the community have turned quite negative.

Blame for bringing it into the country. Threats of physical violence.

Even kids being bullied at school because their farm is undergoing testing.

Recently a child had disinfectant thrown over him because he was, in the eyes of other children, “infected”.

the importance of what we say about other people in front of kids.

If there’s a bright note in all of this, it’s this: the stories I’ve heard haven’t been in Mid Canterbury.

Our community, compared to some others, has pulled together well.

On the whole, there hasn’t been a lot of blame thrown around here.

Most affected farmers here haven’t gone to ground, haven’t hidden away.

They’ve told their neighbours.

They’ve asked for help from the Rural Support Trust. Some have even gone public and talked about the impact on them and their families.

And the community has responded.

Bunches of flowers, blocks of chocolate, crates of beer. All things dropped off by people in our district for farmers affected by mycoplasma bovis.

Next on the schedule is a day at the races to support farming families, particularly those stressed out by mycoplasma bovis.

It’s on Sunday, July 15 at the racecourse, with the first race at 11.30am.

I’ve been talking to Federated Farmers and Rural Support Trust about it for a couple of weeks, and have offered them any assistance they might need.

It’s going to be a fun family event, which I hope will again show the love that we have for farmers in our district.

Madikwe Game Reserve doesn’t just have rhinos, with all of the animals that South Africa offers on the reserve.

A safari that helps make a difference

T

he helicopter dips and circles close to the earth as it searches for its target in the South African scrub, while we watch from the safety of a vehicle some distance away.

We’ve turned location services off on our phones so our whereabouts can’t be traced, and are accompanied by two guards carrying rifles.

Already this safari is nothing like what I expected. Later on another guest will compare it to something out of a movie.

Within minutes we get that word the chopper’s found its target – “we’ve got one, let’s go”.

The sight of the aircraft dipping low to the ground remains so impressive on approach that at first I’m too distracted to notice the white rhinoceros emerging from the scrub.

She tries to get away but a bright red dart is already stuck to her backside, skilfully deployed by a veterinarian in the chopper’s passenger seat.

We coo and gasp as the young, 1.6-tonne creature trots by us and comes to a rest on the ground.

Our group is on a conservation

safari at Madikwe Game Reserve, in which the rhino’s DNA will be collected and her ears notched.

It’s an important exercise but not a cheap one, and as such it’s largely funded by guests at the park’s 30-plus lodges paying for the experience.

Ryan – a volunteer with the counter-poaching unit who has been been given a pseudonym – says they give each rhino a unique notching to help monitor and care for the population.

The DNA is added to a database, which can be used to help catch and prosecute poachers who kill the park’s endangered black and white rhinos for their horns.

Ryan says poachers are savvy, which is why we’ve disabled location services on our devices.

We don’t want to inadvertently help them find the rhino if we share pictures and videos later.

“They are extremely organised, we compare them to the drug cartels in South America where the structures and infrastructures are put to place,” he says.

“People are being hired now by the syndicates to go and shoot the rhinos so it’s guns for hire, basically.”

unteers begin working quickly, and we’re each tasked with helping to collect a different DNA sample.

It’s an unforgettable and moving experience to get so close to the animal, and witness firsthand the work of the staff and volunteers dedicated to ensuring her survival.

We’re encouraged to feel the rise and fall of her enormous

chest, her rough, leathery skin, the soft patches behind her ears and between the rolls on her legs.

“I hope you stay safe, little girl,” another guest says as she gently pats the rhino goodbye.

When we climb back into our vehicle I’m dazed and awed by a once-in-a-lifetime experience that all unfolded before breakfast, over less than an hour.

We watch the rhino stand and disappear into the scrub, and I wonder what her future holds.

While the average life expectancy of a white rhino is up to 45 years, our guide Armand says some estimates put the animals at risk of becoming extinct in 10 to 15.

There is, however, hope in devoted staff and volunteers like Ryan, who is all packed up and leaving for the next job within minutes of the rhino waking.

“I see us as being in this world as guardians of nature,” he tells me later.

“And these rhinos and elephants and lions cannot really look after themselves because they’re up against armed poachers, so it’s up to us to guard for the next generation.”

Grief over shooting The historic state capital of Annapolis is draped in grief from a shooting attack on the local newspaper, which killed journalists who chronicled soccer games, art exhibits and the fabric of small-city life.

Friends, former co-workers and those who felt connected to the victims took part in a strikingly silent candlelit march on Friday night to honour the employees of The Capital newspaper who died a day earlier in one of the deadliest attacks on journalists in US history.

Jarrod W Ramos has been charged with five counts of first-degree murder after allegedly shooting five people in the US newspaper office.

A sign outside The Annapolis Bookstore, a block from the Maryland State House, starkly expresses the depth of sorrow many are feeling in this quaint waterside capital of about 40,000 near the Chesapeake Bay. “There are no words,” it says.

With its weekly sailboat races and picturesque downtown, residents were settling into summer’s languid rhythms when the shooting shattered the usual tranquility. News of death Lull in rain helps search shatters family The family of Brisbane schoolgirl Larissa Beilby are shattered by confirmation it was her body that was found inside a barrel on the Gold Coast last week.

Police are providing counselling for the 16-yearold’s parents and relatives after confirming Larissa had been murdered.

Her boyfriend, 34-year-old Zlatko Sikorsky, was on Sunday charged with the Craigslea State High School student’s killing.

“With a broken heart shattered into more than a million pieces our family is utterly destroyed to inform you all that Larissa has been taken from us,” Larissa’s sister Deanna posted on Facebook yesterday.

“Our beautiful girl has been reunited with our beloved wife and mother.

“Fly high our darling angel, until we see you again Rissy.”

Larissa was last seen in the north Brisbane suburb of Sandgate on June 15.

She was reported missing by her father Peter Beilby on Tuesday, a day before police discovered her body in a barrel placed on the tray of an abandoned ute at Stapylton.

Despite reports the body was Larissa’s, the family had held on to hope until a formal identification came from police on Saturday.

Inspector Damien Hansen told reporters support for her relatives would be ongoing.

“It will be devastating for them and we certainly are giving them all the support that we can and so to are counsellors from the Queensland Homicide Victim support group,” Insp Hansen said.

The frantic effort to locate 12 boys and their soccer coach missing in a cave in Thailand for a week has picked up pace as a break in the rain eased flooding in the system of caverns and more experts from around the world joined the anxious rescue mission.

Australian Federal Police and Defence Force personnel have joined other multinational teams in the desperate search, including US military personnel and experts from a British cave exploration club. China sent a six-person team of rescue and disaster experts to the cave, the Chinese Embassy in Bangkok said. The group has experience in lifesaving operations in Myanmar and Nepal, the embassy said.

The search in the northern province of Chiang Rai has been going slowly, largely because flooding has blocked rescuers from going through chambers to get deeper into the cave.

Pumping out water hasn’t solved the problem, so the attention has focused on finding shafts on the mountainside that might serve as a back door to the blocked-off areas where the missing may be sheltering.

The boys, aged 11 to 16, and their 25-year-old coach entered the sprawling Tham Luang Nang Non cave after a soccer game on

June 23, but near-constant rains have thwarted the search for them.

Authorities have nevertheless expressed hope that the group has found a dry place within the cave to wait.

Reflecting that hope, a medical evacuation drill was held on Saturday morning to see how long it would take to get rescued people out of the cave into 13 ambulances and to the nearest hospital.

A second, private Chinese group calling itself Green Boat Emergency has also arrived. “Our skills are search-and-rescue on mountains and in caves. We hope we can help,” said Wang Xudong, a member of the group.

Chiang Rai Governor Narongsak Osatanakorn said the falling water level in the cave has helped the rescue effort considerably.

Thai navy SEAL divers have been crucial to the search, but have been stymied by muddy water reaching the cave’s ceiling, forcing them to suspend operations again and again. With water levels dropping, they resumed dives at the weekend, re-entering a chamber from which they had retreated earlier in the week. But they could not advance farther than 200 metres from their current position, the team reported.

Officials also began dropping care packages into the shafts.

Why Martin had to go

There may be more to Andy Martin’s departure from New Zealand Football than meets the eye.

While it has been sold as a retirement – a classic PR spin – that’s stretching the truth.

The most likely scenario is that Martin has walked, essentially because he had little choice.

The Herald understands a formal complaint – with allegations of bullying-type behaviour by the chief executive – has been laid with New Zealand Football.

It’s also believed several former staff members are ready to come forward with other grievances over Martin’s conduct, if able to within the terms of reference of an upcoming review.

The review was not going to reflect well on Martin. While the focus has been on Andreas Heraf there would have been almost as much pressure on Martin. If Heraf fostered a toxic environment – as 12 Ferns players have alleged – then Martin was also culpable.

There are written records that Martin knew of issues on the Ferns tour to Spain in March but that he failed to act on those concerns.

Martin’s tenure brought some business acumen to the role, but otherwise his time will be remembered for costly administrative blunders and poor decisions around personnel.

Above all, Martin never appeared to possess genuine passion for the sport, which ultimately contributed to his downfall.

The 2018 Football World Cup round-of-16 kicked off with two simply superb games of football.

First, France beat Argentina 4-3 in a thrilling encounter in Kazan to send the two-time champions home.

Portugal and Uruguay then engaged in an absolutely absorbing arm-wrestle in Sochi, with the South Americans prevailing 2-1.

Heroes Kylian Mbappe wasn’t born until five months after his current national coach Didier Deschamps and France’s World Cup winning team of 1998 paraded the trophy down the Champs Elysees.

Yesterday he showed why he is the fresh new face of French foot-

ball, a second-half brace propelling his nation into the last eight as he became the first teenager since Pele in 1958 to score twice in a World Cup match.

It’s no longer enough to say Mbappe, whose blistering pace also earned the penalty from which France opened the scoring, has potential; he is more than delivering on football’s biggest stage.

And Edison Cavani – who plays with Mbappe at Paris St-Germain – has often been upstaged by Luis Suarez in Uruguay’s attack, but yesterday he produced two goals of the highest calibre to send his side into the last eight, before limping off through injury with 20 minutes to go.

Villains Messi, gone. Ronaldo, gone.

Despite some eye-catching moments in the last fortnight, the planet’s two best players of the past decade have been unable to propel their football-mad nations beyond the first knockout stage at this World Cup. And there’s no guarantee either will have the chance to do so again.

Stat chat There were ten goals scored yesterday, the most on a day of knockout football at the World Cup since 17 June 1970, when two semi-finals produced 11 goals.

This is the first time Argentina have scored three goals in a com-

petitive match and lost.

France’s opener was the first goal Argentina had conceded from a penalty in a World Cup knockout game since 1998, when Alan Shearer scored against them for England.

There were eight shots on target in the Argentina v France game with seven resulting in goals.

Hampstead oh so close

Defending champions Southern notched up another win, but it was Hampstead who almost produced the talking point of the season in round two of Mid Canterbury Rugby’s Watters Cup on Saturday.

Hampstead haven’t won a Watters Cup game in nine seasons and even their coach Shaun Bovey didn’t think they’d stand much of a chance of breaking that drought against Combined Country Cup runners up Rakaia on Saturday.

But they came closer then anyone could have imagined, with Rakaia needing a try on full time to come from behind and snatch victory from under Hampstead’s noses 17-14.

While Rakaia was up in the top two of the combined competition, Hampstead didn’t record any wins until their last two games of the competition, when they overcame Hurunui and Hornby to avoid taking home the wooden spoon.

Rakaia were hot favourites and Hampstead headed into the match hoping their defence would hold strong, and that they could build on the form that saw them hold Celtic to just 7-3 at half time in round one.

Although they were missing three of their star players – Seta Koroitamana, Nete Caucau and Timoci Nabakeke – the Rakaia team started strongly, putting that Hampstead defence under intense pressure for the opening

quarter of the match.

It took about 25 minutes before that pressure told with Rakaia scoring an unconverted try, and from the kick off Hampstead scored a try of their own to Toafa Touli, which he converted to take the lead 7-5.

Rakaia scored again to lead 12-7 but Hampstead weren’t done, scoring again through Leti Leanna to lead 14-12.

And that was the way it remained with only a minute left on the clock.

Rakaia had the ball but were well down the field, with Hampstead’s players trying to keep themselves in the position they never dreamt they’d be in.

But a break down the flank caught them off guard and captain Jackson Donlan – who hadn’t started the game as he wasn’t feeling well – ran in for Rakaia’s match-winning try, with the missed conversion ending the game.

Bovey said he was blown away by his side’s performance.

“What these boys did for us was the best 80 minutes they have played this year.

“It’s probably the best 80 minutes they’ve played in the last four years.

“They just fronted up, it was unbelievable,” Bovey said.

“I’ve never been so proud of a group of boys.

“They certainly left nothing on the field.”

They were a sombre side in the changing rooms, knowing what they came so close to achieving.

“I think me and Craig (Dwyer, co-coach) were the only ones smiling. The boys were just absolutely gutted,” Bovey said.

Rakaia coach Wayne Foxcroft said his side had opportunities, but butchered too many of them.

“The opportunities were there, but they applied pressure and scored some tries off our mistakes.”

Not to be outdone, Southern and Rakaia also produced a cracker of a game at Celtic, with the visitors holding on for a 3732 win.

The win secured the defending champion Southern side a spot at the top of the table, with two wins from two outings, but they had a fight on their hands to get that win over Celtic.

Celtic hit the ground running and were rewarded for that early pressure with a penalty to Nathan McCloy to open the scoring, but once Southern got ball in hand they looked dangerous.

Southern’s opening try came via a strong run down the sideline from Dalton Kannemeyer, and Jon Dampney got in on the try-scoring action a couple of minutes later, giving Southern a 12-6 lead.

McCloy kept Celtic within range with another penalty, but Southern’s Richard Fridd landed one straight back, before Ryan Williams scored his side’s third try to give his side a 22-6 lead at the break.

Celtic weren’t going away, and they started the second half the

stronger side, with a McCloy break setting Pavoale Sofai up for his side’s first try to bring it back to 22-11.

For every move Celtic made though, Southern had an answer, striking straight back with a second try to Dampney which he converted himself.

It was then Celtic’s turn to strike back, and they did, with a barnstorming run from Leauma Tu Uga seeing him go in under the uprights to make it 29-18.

But again, Southern soon restored the gap with Fridd scoring a try but missing the conversion, before two late tries to T Kamoe set up a tense finish.

Those tries got Celtic back to 37-32 – within striking range – but all Southern had to do was look after the ball and wind down the clock, which they did.

Southern coach Andrew Carr said for the second week running his side had started well, but struggled to finish it off.

“At the end of the day a win is a win and you worry about it at the time how you got the win, but tomorrow we won’t worry about it, we got what we needed out of it,” Carr said.

Celtic coach Geoff Wright said if his side could put a complete game together they’d be a force to be reckoned with.

“Our ball retention and our silly mistakes, our dropped ball, that cost us,” Wright said.

“But I thought we showed a lot of ticker to fight our way back into it and we could’ve snatched it at the end, perhaps.”

Leadership hailed David Pocock has returned from his Australian rugby sabbatical a better leader, according to Brumbies coach Dan McKellar. The Wallabies flanker hasn’t missed a beat since coming back to Super Rugby this season from time away, which included a playing stint in Japan. He had a delayed start to the season due to knee injury and missed the first four games, but Pocock’s influence has put the Brumbies back in finals contention.

The 30-year-old was outstanding in his team’s upset 24-12 victory against the Hurricanes on Saturday night. “(Pocock’s) leadership along with Christian’s is enormous for the group,” McKellar said.

Jaguares on a roll The Jaguares have scored their seventh successive Super Rugby win after a sparkling start against the Stormers. The Jaguares beat the South Africans 25-14 after racing out to a 15-point lead in Buenos Aires. Of the Jaguares lineup, 14 started for Argentina against Wales on June 9 and were crushed 23-10. The lineup changed little in a second loss to Wales and a thrashing from Scotland last weekend. But against the Stormers, tries to winger Bautista Delguy and lock Guido Petti in the first 15 minutes for 15-0 gave the Jaguares control they never looked like relinquishing.

Game of two halves The Chiefs have turned on some Pacific-style razzle-dazzle in a 4522 win over the Highlanders in their Super Rugby match in Suva.

In an extraordinary first half the Chiefs scored six tries to lead 42-0 at halftime before the tables turned. They conceded four and were held tryless while playing into a blustery wind in the second spell at ANZ Stadium. The result leaves both teams with 9-5 win-loss records and sitting third and fourth in the overall standings.

New kid on the block

When you’re 19 and new to town, heading along to a rugby training with 40-odd other blokes and a couple of coaches you’ve never met before can be a little daunting.

That was Finn Cleary when he turned up for his first training as part of the wider Mid Canterbury training squad earlier this season.

He was still relatively new to town and was playing for Mt Somers in the Mid Canterbury senior B competition when he received the surprise invitation to train with the squad.

It wasn’t often senior B players made the cut for Mid Canterbury, and Cleary found himself thrown together with a bunch of senior players he’d never even heard of.

He needn’t have been worried though.

“I think I knew one person out of 45 people in the wider squad, but they were so welcoming,” he said.

Playing for Mid Canterbury was an opportunity he never dreamt would come his way after moving to the district for work early last year.

A Nelson native who did his secondary schooling at Wanganui Collegiate, in the home

town of Mid Canterbury’s Heartland Championship foes Wanganui, Cleary had moved back to the Marlborough area after his schooling when an opportunity arose to move south and work at Erewhon Station.

He took it and hadn’t regretted it for a second since.

Keen to continue playing the sport he’d loved since he was five, Cleary signed up to play senior B

A few weeks later when Mid Canterbury coach Sean Carter named his squad to take on Ellesmere in tomorrow afternoon’s annual clash at the Ashburton A&P Showgrounds, Cleary’s name was there.

He was ecstatic; Mid Canterbury hadn’t even been on his radar a few months back.

I was just playing rugby to have fun and have a couple of beers with the boys afterwards

There, he found a club that quickly became like family, so much so that after a six-month stint travelling around the UK at the end of season, it was Mt Somers that he returned to when he came back to New Zealand.

Through the connections he’d made in the area the year before, through rugby, he’d found himself a job at Mt Somers Station and was loving life and his rugby when he got the surprise text

“I only played rugby for Mt Somers because I like playing rugby. I’ve been playing since I was five and I wouldn’t know what to do with myself if I wasn’t playing,” Cleary said.

“I wasn’t trying to get into the (Mid Canterbury) team, I was just playing rugby to have fun and have a couple of beers with the boys afterwards.”

But now that it was well and truly on his radar, he was intent on making the most of the op-

portunity. He’d start off the bench tomorrow and was determined to give it his best shot as he eyed up a spot in Mid Canterbury’s Heartland Championship side later this season.

“Every time I come to training I learn something, it’s great.”

Cleary is a versatile player.

A prop for the Wanganui Collegiate first XV in the Central North Island competition, Cleary played at hooker in his younger days, and for Mt Somers he’d been a lock, flanker and number eight.

“As long as I’m on the field, I don’t mind where I play,” he said.

For Mid Canterbury, he was most likely to take to the field at seven.

Mid Canterbury coach Sean Carter came across Cleary by chance.

“I saw him playing against the Rakaia div two team when I was having a look at a boy who was playing for the Rakaia colts, and he was just one of those players who really stood out,” Carter said.

“I looked at him and thought, ‘yeah, that’s a kid I can really work with’.”

He said Cleary had passion and a desire to be better and had potential to be a great asset to Mid Canterbury moving forward.

There was a time when it looked as if the All Blacks were never going to find a successor to Jerome Kaino.

A few pretenders emerged between 2009 and 2015 but none stuck around long enough or were consistently good enough to convince as the heir apparent.

It hit a new low in early 2016 when Victor Vito announced he was off to France and Liam Messam committed to playing sevens.

The All Blacks had to start a new search, focusing on Elliot Dixon and Liam Squire, knowing the clock was ticking as Kaino had turned 33.

How quickly and significantly things have changed has been highlighted in the past month.

Kaino is checking out of New Zealand rugby and although the All Blacks don’t have an embarrassment of riches at blindside, they have a considerable pool of promising talent.

Which has created a different problem. From having too few emerging options at blindside, the All Blacks now have too many and although coach Steve Hansen has held the same view about quality players as Wallis Simpson did about money – that one can never have too much – it seems ill-advised to be stockpiling so much resource in just one position.

Ill-advised when their resources at No8 are limited. What the June series did was highlight how much the All Blacks need Kieran Read and also illustrate the distance by which he is the best No.8 in the country. Luke Whitelock provides defensive solidity but lacks pace, dynamism and creativity with ball in hand.

Read will return for the Rugby Championship assuming his back holds up the way everyone hopes and he’ll target being there through to the 2019 World Cup. His contract expires in 2019 and given his injury history, the toll he’s put his body through and that he’ll be 34 with nothing more to prove, there’s little expectation he’ll look to extend his career beyond the Rugby World Cup. It would seem, then, the All Blacks have about 18 months to groom and develop a successor to Read and the solution may lie in trying to convert one of their many blindsides.

It may come down to a choice of Jordan Taufua or Shannon Frizell to be retained in the 33-man squad and by virtue of the latter having ticked plenty of boxes on his unexpected debut in Dunedin, he may be the one who survives.

Squire and Vaea Fifita present the All Blacks with the two options they need at blindside and potentially Jackson Hemopo is going to cover lock and No6.

Frizell’s longer term future may be at No.8 as he’s a similar athlete in size, intent and ability to Read, who also began his career as a blindside before he was persuaded

by Hansen to shift to No.8 in 2009.

He could become the rangy, ballplaying force the All Blacks will be looking for in 2020 if they are prepared to give him a bit of game time this year and next. - NZME

Green staying positive Five-eighth Blake Green believes the Warriors can take plenty of positives out of the heartbreaking 18-15 NRL loss to Cronulla ahead of a testing run of games that could determine their season.

The Warriors were bitterly disappointed after the Sharks stole a match-winning try off a forward pass at the death – the last of several crucial calls among a lopsided 10-5 penalty count that went against the home side at Mt Smart Stadium.

The result saw the Warriors drop one spot to fifth ahead of two away games against top eight sides Penrith and Brisbane, before they return home to face reigning premiers Melbourne on July 22.

The Warriors let slip an early 12-0 lead as the visitors took control of the game to draw level just before halftime, but the hosts changed their tactics after the break and despite having no luck with the referees almost managed to pull off a hard-fought victory.

Green admitted the defeat was hard to stomach but emphasised his team-mates should take confidence from their second half effort that saw them snatch a 15-14 lead with seven minutes remaining.

The lesson we can take out of that is it takes a good footy team to change things at halftime and we did it without getting any luck.

“We had some good field position early and scored some points but then couldn’t get out of our own end and were dominated for the last 25 minutes of the first half,” said Green.

The Mainland Tactix have claimed their first back-to-back victory since round one of the 2018 ANZ Premiership season. The Tactix snatched second place on the Premiership ladder from the defending champion Southern Steel, defeating the Northern Mystics 50-40 in Nelson. Tactix captain Jane Watson was pleased with her side’s ability to continue building after a win over the Steel last week. And despite finishing at the bottom of the league last season, the side now look on track to make the playoffs in August.

Suspension avoided James Tamou has avoided suspension for dropping his knee on Dylan Walker’s face in Penrith’s NRL loss to Manly on Saturday.

Panthers prop Tamou was spotted making contact with Walker’s head in a tackle midway through the first half and the Manly five-eighth remained on the ground for some time after. But the Panthers said he’d only copped a grade-one contrary conduct charge.

Ponga out of Origin III Blake Green found some of the referee’s rulings a little strange on Saturday.

“But we changed our style of play in the second half and dominated field position for long periods.

“We got to move the footy a bit more and we just made a few subtle changes.

“The lesson we can take out of that is it takes a good footy team to recognise that and change things at halftime and we did it without getting any luck or penalties go our way.

“And what I spoke to the team about is it just shows that we don’t have to rely on getting calls and have things go our way with penalties to generate some momentum in the game – we turned it ourselves there.

“Obviously it would have been a good reinforced lesson if we had of won the game today, but we can still take something out of it.”

The 31-year-old playmaker struggled to understand some of the refereeing calls and could be heard questioning referee Adam Gee’s no-advantage ruling which gifted the Sharks an attacking scrum, in the lead-up to wing Edrick Lee running in the first of his two four-pointers in the 23rd minute.

NZ skipper looking for a fresh start As Kiwi netball fans were left devastated by the worst Silver Ferns Commonwealth Games result in history, captain Katrina Grant faced her darkest hour.

Reduced to tears in a postgame interview, it was clear the veteran was deeply hurt by the demise of her once gold medalwinning side.

But almost three months on and well into the ANZ Premiership season where her Central Pulse team lead, Grant said she was ready for a fresh start.

“We just wanted to go in there and try as hard as we could and it wasn’t enough and it was heartbreaking and a hard time,” Grant said.

“I don’t want Comm Games to be the last time I ever put [the Silver Ferns dress] on, heck no, that would be horrible and devastating and I would look back in 10 years and be like ‘was that how I left it’?”

“I’m loving it and really enjoying my netball at the moment,” she said. “I just love doing what I do here and being loyal is quite important to me and being able to stick around as long as I’ve had, finally some success is coming and it’s awesome.

Grant believed the time she spent away after the Games made her realise there was more to life than sport and said celebrating her engagement with Rore put things back into perspective.

“There’s more to life than just sport, but at the time, it’s really hard to tell ... especially at a pinnacle event like Comm Games, you’re just in it and it is your life.

“It was really, really tough, and being able to go away with Joel to Fiji after that, just chilling out ... made me realise that netball is only for a short amount of time.

“There is more to life and while you’re in netball, you may as well enjoy it and make the most of it while you’ve got it and then understand that life goes on.”

Grant will take to the court tonight when the Pulse play the Southern Steel in their third and final match-up against the defending champions.

Double for Harrison Colin Harrison had a bit of a concern heading to Addington on Friday night with his promising pacer Its Official Babe, but he needn’t have been so worried.

The South Canterbury horseman wasn’t worried about a rise in class, or a first look at the Addington surface with his daughter of Art Official, but more whether or not she was actually ready enough to be a contender in a good field.

“She hadn’t worked very good last Sunday, she blew up over the back and then I worked her on Wednesday and there was a little bit of improvement,” Harrison said.

“But I was pretty concerned that she was underdone going into it.”

There was no need for concern though as Its Official Babe sprouted wings to come from near last at the top of the straight to run down some well-credentialed and more experienced horses in the process.

Stridemaster recordings showed that she ran her last quarter in 26.6 as she burst past Cruzy Dude at the 50-metre mark for Matty Williamson at odds of better than $35.

It is important to register your dog every year as part of being a responsible dog owner.

Annual dog registration fees are due by 31 July 2018. All dog owners must register or re-register their pets and working dogs by this time. Dog registration forms have been posted out to all dog owners, but, if you have not received yours you can still register your dog online or at the Ashburton District Council reception.

Dog registration renewals that are unpaid at 3 August will incur a 50% penalty fee. Late registrations create additional administrative costs in reminders and postage, as well as staff time. If you do not register your dog any or all of the following may occur: • Issuing of infringement notice which carries a $300 infringement fee.

Hampstead have started the third and final round of the Mid/South Canterbury senior women’s hockey competition the way they spent the first two rounds – winning.

It was one-way traffic for most of Hampstead’s match against Timaru Girls’ High School at the Ashburton hockey turf on Saturday afternoon, the home side running right away with the game 11-0.

Cindy Lowe and Hannah Mowat both nabbed themselves hattricks, while player of the day Kim Campion scored two goals along

with Georgia Clarke, with Emma Mealings adding another.

Hampstead coach Rex Turnbull said his side played well.

“There’s always something to work on but it’s pretty hard to complain about an 11-0 scoreline,” Turnbull said.

“The first half of the game we played really good and in the second half, even though it was 5-0 at half time, we lost a bit of composure and fitness.

“Then they took their goalie off as a bit of an experiment and we got a few more.”

One game into the third and final round of the competition,

only one team have really threatened Hampstead so far this season, and that side – Geraldine – were their opposition this weekend.

The last two matches between the two sides had resulted in a 3-2 win to Hampstead, and a draw – the only game Hampstead hadn’t won this season.

They may have been at the top of the table and unlikely to finish any lower than second heading into the finals even if they did drop a game or two, but Turnbull said it was still a case of a game at a time.

“Ultimately it’s down to one, or

potentially two games, or maybe even three if you misfire in the first one,” Turnbull said.

“It’s fantastic to win by so much but there’s only a couple of games that really matter.”

Mid Canterbury’s second senior women’s team, Hampstead/ Collegians, were also in action on Saturday, playing Craighead in Timaru and coming away with a 1-0 loss.

Over in the Mid/South Canterbury senior men’s competition Wakanui are also top of the table after a big weekend of hockey saw them pick up two bonus point wins.

They played Cambridge on Friday night in Timaru – a deferred match from the week before – and won 4-1 with Nick and Hayden Sinclair scoring two goals each, and followed that up with a 4-2 win over Cambridge in Ashburton on Saturday.

Wakanui coach Sam Moore said the timing of the two wins couldn’t have been better.

In July Wakanui has just one game, and it’s likely to be a tough one against Temuka, with the other three weeks being a week off due to school holidays and tournaments, and two rounds where they have the bye.
