Signing off and moving on Ashburton College teacher Claire Robertshaw has signed off and will start the new year at Rolleston College, leaving behind a legacy of strong achievement in the school’s visual art department. An 18-year stint at one school is a long time in any teacher’s life, but that’s the milestone Ashburton College teacher Claire Robertshaw chalked up before signing off and moving on. Claire joined the college’s teaching staff in 2000 but come day one of term one 2019, her name will be on the staff list at Rolleston College. The teacher of art with art history has set high standards for her students and has worked to find motivational ways of engaging and growing each student’s achievements. Some of those students have achieved scholarship results. Early in her career, Claire decided to learn the correct language and terminology in te reo and tikanga both the aid her teaching of visual arts and to ensure she was able to participate in Maori cultural events and develop an understanding of protocols. She has been a strong advocate of the Peer Support Programme and has contributed significantly to the extra-curricular life and work of the college, including such festivities as AshDance, Lip Sync, Pasifika activities, Kapa

Haka and Manu Korero, college productions, including sets and props, arts and languages week, field trips, music nights,and promoting the arts through student’s involvement in Mid Canterbury schools’ exhibitions, the college art award, Zonta art award and arts festivals. Many of the school’s murals are due to the creativity, vision of and planning by Claire and the art department, providing students with ‘real’ art opportunities. These major projects have extended to community murals – also in town. She has been involved in several college committees including; staff development, eliminating violence, staff social and Maori student achievement committees and she held the staff head of Blue House position from 2004 until the end of 2010. In 2003 Claire was appointed as head of department – visual arts and was, in 2007, appointed to the position of head of the arts and languages faculty. During part of term one and all of term two of 2016 claire was appointed to the position of acting deputy principal. She was successful in gaining a secondary teachers’ study award in 2014, for the topics of visual art education, education issues amongst Pasifika peoples in New Zealand and cultural differences in education.

Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson has given his mother a Christmas gift of a lifetime: buying her her own home. The action star took to Instagram to share the news posting a heartwarming video of his mother’s, Ata’s, reaction. “This one felt good. Surprise! Bought my mom a new home for Christmas,” he wrote. The Rock continued by explaining how he remembers as a child moving from one small apartment to another as his parents tried to make ends meet. “The first home my parents ever lived in was the one I bought for them in 1999,” he wrote. “They divorced about five years later. Since then I always made sure my mom and dad have everything they’ll ever need.”

Korean leader says he’s ready for more talks North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said yesterday he hopes to extend his high-stakes nuclear summitry with President Donald Trump into 2019, but also warns Washington not to test North Koreans’ patience with sanctions and pressure. During his televised New Year’s speech, Kim said he’s ready to meet with Trump at any time to produce an outcome “welcomed by the international community”. However, he said the north will be forced to take a different path if the United States “continues to break its promises and misjudges our patience by unilaterally demanding certain things and pushes ahead with sanctions and pressure”. Kim also said the United States should continue to halt its joint military exercises with ally South Korea and not deploy strategic military assets to the south. He also made a nationalistic call urging for stronger inter-Korean co-opera-

tion and said the north is ready to resume operations at a jointly-run factory park in the North Korean border town of Kaesong and restart South Korean tours to the north’s Diamond Mountain resort. Neither of those is possible for South Korea unless sanctions are removed. Some analysts say North Korea has been trying to drive a wedge between Washington and Seoul while putting the larger burden of action on the United States. Pyongyang over the past months has accused Washington of failing to take corresponding measures following the north’s unilateral dismantlement of a nuclear testing ground and suspension of nuclear and long-range missile tests. Kim used his New Year’s speech a year ago to start a newfound diplomatic approach with Seoul and Washington, which led to three summits with South Korean President Moon Jae-in and a historic June

Terror link to UK stabbing spree British counter-terrorism police are leading an investigation after a knifeman stabbed three people at a central railway station in Manchester, England. Two commuters – a man and woman in their 50s – were taken to hospital with knife injuries and a British Transport Police officer was stabbed in the shoulder. An eyewitness to the attack, which occurred at Victoria Station around 9pm on New Year’s Eve, said they heard the assailant shout “Allah” during the incident. Police said a man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and remains in custody. Grande turns down honour Ariana Grande reportedly turned down the honour of a Damehood from Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II. According to editors at The Sun, the 25-year-old singer was contacted by Buckingham Palace officials to inform her of the decision to give her the prestigious title in the annual New Year Honours list. Grande was praised for her compassion and support of the victims of the terror attack at her gig at the Manchester Arena in May last year, that left 22 dead and hundreds injured. However, a source close to Grande told The Sun that she turned down the Damehood as she felt it was “too soon”.

Car hurtles into pedestrians in Tokyo A car has slammed into pedestrians on a street where people had gathered for New Year’s festivities in downtown Tokyo, injuring eight people. Police took into custody a man in his 20s but did not further identify him. They say he is suspected of intentionally trying to kill people by driving the car through the street. NHK TV footage showed a small van with the entire front end smashed and officers and ambulance workers rushing to the scene. The crash occurred early on Tuesday on Takeshita Street, well known to tourists and pop culture and fashion fans. Popular with teenagers, it runs right by Meiji Shrine in Harajuku. – AP

June Whitﬁeld dies Veteran comic actress Dame June Whitfield has died aged 93, her agent has confirmed. The star enjoyed a career stretching back to the 1940s, including roles in the Carry On films and the longrunning sitcom Terry And June. She was made a dame in the 2017 Birthday Honours for her services to drama and entertainment in a career spanning eight decades. The star was also well known for playing the mother of Jennifer Saunders’ character Edina Monsoon in the hit BBC show Absolutely Fabulous. Dame June also appeared in numerous Radio 4 productions during her career.

We should try volunteering

ust a few days ago the New Year’s honours list was rolled out once again and we were able to celebrate those that have contributed to their communities or fields of work. We were lucky to have one still living in our area and a bloody good bloke he is too. You only have to sit down and start chatting with Don Kirdy to realise just how passionate he is about cycling, the sport he was awarded the QSM for his services to, and the Tinwald Cycling Club. Not the biggest fan of honours lists, he realised it was important that it acknowledged the cycling club just as much as his

work. Unfortunately, I suspect he is part of a spread of generations that we just do not have anymore, and that is hard-working volunteers for sports clubs. I have met many great volunteers across this district, but there is no doubt that there is nowhere near enough. I know of at least one person

who has shouldered plenty of responsibilities for a club, bending over backwards to help people, but any requests for assistance the other way seem to fall on deaf ears. Sports in general are struggling across a lot of codes, with dwindling player numbers not being aided by a shift towards people not keen on spending their Saturdays playing sport. I do not know what it is about the idea of volunteering that seems to put people off now, but it should be viewed as an incredibly rewarding experience. I am not saying it is easy, but hearing the delight in Don’s voice when talking about the

international cyclists he helped out when they were younger, or just his passion in general for the sport, I could not help but feel like we need more of that spirit. Everyone will have a memory of a time they were helped by a volunteer, it is hard not to really given there are so many good ones out there. While you might have spent New Year’s Eve thinking about your resolution for the year, maybe we need to start thinking about contributing more time to helping others. We live in a very me, me, me world, so let’s make it an us, us, us world.

Blow some raspberries I

n the lead-in to Christmas raspberries were the victim of rain, then sunshine, then more and more rain. They were great if you managed to harvest in time, before the crazy weather conditions saw them moulding on the canes. There are still plenty of raspberries to be picked and there are plenty of great ways to eat them, fresh or frozen.

Raspberry brownie 320g butter (melted) 1¼ C cocoa 7 eggs (size 6 will do fine) 3C sugar 1t vanilla essence 2C dark chocolate chips (milk chocolate will do, but dark is better for this one) 1¼ C flour 1t baking powder 1C raspberries (fresh or frozen) Icing sugar (Enough to sift over the top to finish in style)

Raspberry sauce 2C fresh or frozen raspberries ¼ C caster sugar 1T cornflour ■ Mash the raspberries with a fork in a medium-sized saucepan. ■ Stir in the sugar and cornflour and bring to the boil, stirring continuously. ■ Cool, then strain out the raspberry pips. ■ Great with ice cream.

■ Preheat oven to 160°C. ■ Line a large baking tin with baking paper (rectangular of around 25-35cm works well). ■ In a large bowl, melt the butter in the microwave, or in a large pot on the stove. ■ Beat the cocoa into the melted butter. You’ll want to use an electric mixer for this, but could be done with a handheld egg beater. ■ Add your eggs, sugar and vanilla essence into the mixture. Continue to mix vigorously for 2-4 mins, until the mixture has roughly doubled in volume. ■ With a wooden spoon, mix in the chocolate chips. ■ Sift in your flour and baking powder. Stir this until fully combined. ■ Pour into lined baking tin. Make sure the mixture is levelled out by giving it a little shake. ■ Put your raspberries evenly on top of your mixture, gently pushing them just under the surface of the brownie mixture. ■ Bake in oven at 160°C for about one hour. To test whether the brownies are done, insert a metal skewer. If it comes out clean, they’re ready to go. ■ Leave to cool in tin for 10-15 minutes. Turn the tin out on to a wire rack to cool down further. ■ Once cooled, sift icing sugar over the top.

Raspberry mufﬁns

White chocolate and raspberry shortcake

60g butter 200g plain flour 2t baking powder ½ t bicarbonate of soda 150g Chelsea caster sugar A pinch of salt 120ml milk 1 large egg 150g raspberries ■ Preheat the oven to 200°C. ■ Melt the butter in the microwave and set it aside to cool. ■ In a large bowl, stir together the flour, baking powder, bicarb, caster sugar and salt. ■ In a measuring jug, beat together the milk, the egg and the melted butter. ■ Pour into the dry ingredients, and mix until combined. ■ Fold in the raspberries, but don’t mix them to much, or the mixture will turn pink. ■ Put paper muffin cases in a muffin tray. Then spoon the mixture into the paper cases. ■ Bake for 25 mins.

1C caster sugar 1 egg 1t vanilla essence 2C flour, sifted 2t baking powder ½ C good-quality white chocolate, chopped Icing sugar, to serve Cream, to serve 2C frozen raspberries 200g butter, softened ■ Preheat the oven to 180°C. Line a 22cm square cake pan with baking paper. ■ Cream the butter and sugar with an electric beater until light and fluffy. ■ Add the egg and vanilla and beat well. ■ Fold in the flour and baking powder until well combined. ■ Press two-thirds of the shortcake mixture into the base of the baking pan. ■ Spoon the raspberries and chocolate over the base. ■ Sprinkle the remaining shortcake mixture on top and press down gently. ■ Bake for 35-40 minutes, until lightly golden brown. Cool in the pan. ■ Serve dusted with icing sugar and accompanied with cream.

QUICK RECIPE

Boiled new potatoes with minty herb butter 1.5kg whole new potatoes, carefully washed 45g butter, softened 1T chopped mint, plus a few whole leaves 1T chopped parsley 1T chopped chives ■ Halve any large potatoes and place in a large saucepan with larger pieces at the bottom. Cover with boiling water, add a pinch of salt and a couple of mint leaves and simmer gently for about 20 minutes. ■ Check the potatoes are cooked by pricking with a skewer – they should ‘give’ but not be falling apart. The cooking time will vary depending on the size of the potatoes, so check them after 15 minutes. ■ While potatoes are simmering, combine butter and chopped herbs. ■ Drain the potatoes and return

to the pan over the heat for 30 seconds, shaking the pan gently to dry them (if they break a little that is fine; the broken skins will simply absorb more of the lovely herb butter). ■ Add the herb butter and swirl

Williams returns to ASB Classic As she begins yet another campaign, Venus Williams refuses to put a timeline on the end of her career. The veteran American, who has helped redefine the term ‘ageless’ in sport, began her 25th year as a professional tennis player yesterday in Auckland. To put her longevity in perspective, when she took her first bow on the tour, Jim Bolger was Prime Minister, Steffi Graf was world No 1, Jeff Wilson was a flashy All Blacks winger and Jacinda Ardern was a student at Morrinsville College. But Williams keeps going in one of the most physically gru-

elling and mentally demanding sports. The 38-year-old has broken all kinds of barriers and stayed relevant well into her fourth decade. Williams reached two grand slam finals in 2017, including Wimbledon, an extraordinary feat 20 years after her first final at SW19. Last year was less productive but she still made a run to the semifinals at Indian Wells, regarded as the fifth grand slam, beating sister Serena on the way, and reached the last eight in Miami and San Jose. She has remained inside the top 40 (39) — but how long can

she go on? “There are so many theories out there but I’m not going to confirm or deny anything,” said Williams. “I’m just going to shroud it with mystery, try to keep winning matches and everyone will have to wait and see.” Despite the constant grind of training, travelling and tournaments, Williams still enjoys the purity of the sport, the competitiveness and being on tour with sister Serena. “It takes a lot of focus, a lot of determination, it’s just you out there,” said Williams. “So it takes a lot of responsibility. But I’m up for it ... that’s all I can say. The best part is still being

able to do what you love, and do it well. “If you aren’t doing it well, you don’t tend to have too many options. But we still both play amazing tennis and we deserve to be here.” And Williams still has a magnetism few other players possess. That was seen this week when the American wandered through the ASB Tennis Centre, ahead of an appearance with sponsor Jaguar. Word spread and soon a crowd had gathered. There’s more than just another series victory at stake for the Black Caps, as they return to short-form cricket with an eye on their ultimate goal for 2019. Fresh off winning their fourth straight test series, the Black Caps take on Sri Lanka in three one-day internationals, starting in Mount Maunganui tomorrow. While they will be hot favourites to take a series win, there’s the small matter of the World Cup firmly on the mind of players and coaches alike. This is the first of three oneday series the Black Caps will play before cricket’s main event rolls around in May, and head coach Gary Stead wants to use the matches to fine-tune both his squad and playing style for the tournament. “It’s really now [about] looking ahead to the World Cup, being clear on the game plans we want to use and making sure the roles we want to get people in — that we’re playing to those roles as well,” said Stead. “They’re about tweaking, looking at the style of play and how we want to play and looking at the options who fit those roles as well. Floyd Mayweather has knocked down Japanese kickboxer Tenshin Nasukawa three times en route to a first-round stoppage in their boxing exhibition at the Saitama Super Arena. Mayweather, 41, a former fiveweight world champion who retired from boxing with a perfect professional record of 50-0 last year, saw off an opponent 21 years his junior yesterday. In a bout that was scheduled for three rounds just outside Tokyo, Nasukawa lasted only two minutes and 20 seconds before his corner threw in the towel. Mayweather said in the buildup he expected to pocket $US9 million ($NZ13.4 million) from the fight, which headlined an event organised by Rizin Fighting Federation, a Japanese mixed martial arts organisation. Mayweather had a 4kg weight advantage over Nasukawa, who boasted an unbeaten record in 28 kickboxing bouts and four contests in MMA, with this fight having no bearing on either man’s official record. Nasukawa, though, reportedly faced a multi-million dollar fine if he attempted to kick out at Mayweather. A grinning Mayweather started supremely confidently and dropped Nasukawa for the first time with a left hook with barely a minute gone. A body shot followed by an uppercut saw Nasukawa slump to the canvas again moments later, with the southpaw bravely getting to his feet, albeit on unsteady legs. A one-two from Mayweather precipitated the end of the contest, and the American said in quotes published by BBC Sport: “It was all about entertainment we had a lot of fun. They wanted this to happen in Japan, so I said ‘why not?’“ “I’m still undefeated. Tenshin is still undefeated. Bring on the one-dayers O

ver the past decade, my idea of how best to spend my time over the Christmas and New Year break has changed somewhat. Go back a good 15 years and it was all about going out and catching up with friends over a few drinks. While I still enjoy catching up with friends, albeit with a fair fewer drinks these days, today my idea of an ideal Christmas break is about taking it easy. It’s about spending quality time with my kids and wider family, and just kicking back and enjoying everything moving at a much slower pace for a couple of weeks. But one thing that hasn’t changed, is that it’s a damn good time to sit back and take in some quality cricket, and this year has been no exception. Boxing Day, a few years ago, used to mean a big day spent at

Christmas (which, as an aside, I have found to be an extremely soothing and relaxing pastime in recent days) while watching cricket on the television made my eyes go a little bit funny. But come tomorrow, cricket makes a return, this time in the one-day format. Test cricket isn’t for everyone – apparently it’s a bit long, slow and boring – but the shorter versions of the game have a much wider appeal. It’s in those shorter versions of the game where we get to see some bigger hitting and a lot more action, and I can’t wait to see what our boys deliver as the summer of cricket continues. Different teams are better at different forms of the game, and while we’ve proven to be pretty handy in the five-day format so far this summer, we’ve proven to be pretty good in the one-day stuff in recent months too. Looking at the current ICC ODI rankings, which have us at three and Sri Lanka way down at eight, you’ve got to think that that winning feeling is going to last for a bit longer yet.

Whiskey Neat salutes at Ellerslie Exciting two-year-old Whiskey Neat cemented his claim for the favourite’s tag for the rich Listed Karaka Million 2YO (1200m) later this month when he led all the way to take out the Gr.3 Barneswood Farm Eclipse Stakes (1200m) at Ellerslie. The Tony Pike-trained gelding had set tongues wagging when he won by 10 lengths on debut at Otaki last month. That victory left pundits wondering if he could replicate that sort of effort against a far stronger field in Tuesday’s Group Three feature. Those questions were answered in emphatic fashion as the strapping Denman youngster dominated from the front throughout the contest before coasting home to down the previously unbeaten Aotea Lad and Exuberant in a slick 1.10.66 for the 1200m journey. Oceanex targets Vinery Caulfield trainer Mick Price has a good opinion of tough Moonee Valley winner Oceanex and believes the daughter of Ocean Park can tackle feature fillies’ races in autumn. The three-year-old filly closed well to win the Dean & McPherson Catering Handicap (1600m) on Saturday in the hands of Dwayne Dunn. “She’s a top-class filly,” Dunn said. “She didn’t handle the corner at all well and I just had to take my medicine and the way she finished off she showed how good she is.” The lightly-raced Oceanex had previously scored by seven lengths at Geelong over 1700m on a Heavy9, and she handled the step-back in distance and the Good4 surface at Moonee Valley with aplomb. “The win on the Heavy9 and doing it the way she did was awesome but you’re always a bit concerned coming back to the mile around a little tight circuit,”

Dunn said. “But she handled herself really well and she’s got a great attitude and obviously the ability is there as well.” Price was pleased with the way the filly had come through the race on Sunday morning. “Bodywise she has just started to mature into a nice Christmas three-year-old now and she looked great this morning,” he said. “She’s not tucked up, she ate up well and she is sound, so I think we can train on. “I have just got to work out a program. If you kept going and going I’d end up with no horse by March or April and I don’t want to do that. “I reckon it would be nice to think we could get her peaking for the Vinery Stakes (Gr.1, 2000m). “Then if we thought she was a mile and a half filly we could run her in the Oaks. “I would say the Vinery would have a big circle around it at this stage.” - NZME

Tornado in Maori Mile Inter Dominion winner Tornado Valley returns to racing in the $50,000 Group 1 Aldebaran Park Maori Mile at Bendigo on Saturday night. “We toyed with running at Melton this weekend because he’s done so well since the Inter Dominion, but opted to wait for Bendigo,” trainer Andy Gath said. Nicole Purdom went to Ireland looking for a life experience, and she well and truly found it. After years of working her way up through women’s rugby ranks in Canterbury, Purdom decided to head offshore to broaden her horizons and grow herself as a rugby player, and 13 months on she was in a pretty good place. She was living, breathing and working everything rugby, and couldn’t be happier. “When I first came over I was only coming over for a life experience for a season and then fell in love with the place, therefore I’ve ended up back here again and waiting on the results of a visa I’ve applied for, for another two years,” Purdom said. “I love the lifestyle and the friendships I’ve made. “It’s also unbelievably cheap to travel all around Europe from Ireland. So many countries are just at your doorstep.” She missed her family and having her mum, dad and brother on the sideline cheering her on at every game, but she spoke to them every day, keeping them up to date with how she and her team were going. The highlight of her past 12 months was winning Ireland’s interprovincial championship with Leinster Rugby, and at the midpoint of the 2018/19 season with her Suttonians club, Purdom and

her team-mates couldn’t have asked for much better. Heading into the Christmas break, Suttonians had won 10 games from 10 outings and had picked up every possible bonus point on offer so far. They were top of the table with 50 points, with their nearest rivals well back on 32 points. “We have actually just qualified for the first time ever in the club’s history, for a second competition call AIL Cup (All Ireland

year as well so that helped boost women’s rugby for this season,” Purdom said. The Irish men’s team were arguably the best in the world now, having toppled the All Blacks a couple of months ago, and Purdom said the atmosphere in Ireland following that result was insane. “In town the streets were full with New Zealand supporters, the pubs were jam-packed and everyone was on a big buzz,” she said. “I unfortunately missed out on tickets to the match as they sold out so, so quick, but I watched the game with my friends in the pub and I was the only New Zealand supporter in there, but it was good fun. “I did cry when we lost, but it’s sport, we have to learn and adapt for next time.” Learning and adapting were things that Purdom had done a lot of in the 13 months she’d spent in Ireland so far, and she wasn’t done with yet. So long as her visa application goes well, Purdom said her goals for 2019 were to win the league with Suttonians and for the club side to perform at their very best in the AIL Cup. For her personally, her future goals were simple. She just wanted to play the best she could, no matter what country she was in, and just enjoy the game.

Samantha Stosur’s woeful record in Australia has continued after she was eliminated in the first round of the Brisbane International for Samantha the fifth time Stosur in six years. Ardie Savea’s u-turn raising big questions By Chris rattue

hat are they not telling me? That’s the question which came screaming across when Ardie Savea turned his back on a French contract following the 2019 World Cup, to instead sign a new deal with New Zealand. In typical ho-hum Kiwi rugby fashion, Savea Going to France became Savea Staying Home with all the excitement that comes with mowing the lawn. It was actually a massive turn of events. Savea is still a superstar in the making. Something dramatic has gone on, and here’s my guess at what it is. The rugby big-wigs are, quite

rightly, very concerned about their openside favourite Sam Cane’s future. Cane broke his neck playing against South Africa in October. So they hurled a pile of money at Savea – the next best number seven by a long way – to tempt him away from French club Pau. There are a host of reasons why the notoriously shy Rugby Kremlin wasn’t exactly trumpeting this. 1) Cane’s future is a tricky topic – quite understandably people in high places want to remain positive for the player’s sake. 2) Cane’s future is a tricky topic – people in high places don’t want to unnecessarily reveal major hiccups in the All Blacks’ World Cup plans. 3) Cane’s future is a tricky topic – devastating injuries to star players are bad PR.

4) There is a hierarchy of player payments in this country with the All Black captain usually at the top. But with so much doubt about Cane’s future, Savea’s retention suddenly assumed an importance beyond this pay scale. NZR never talks money, and will be keener than ever to keep whatever they are paying Savea quiet. We’re talking unique market forces here, something NZR likes to bypass if at all possible. 5) The idea that Savea might be gaining from Cane’ misfortune doesn’t sit well in rugby’s all-forone, one-for-all la-la land. Savea confirmed his decision on Instagram with the words ‘Truly blessed to have re-signed with NZ for 2020-2021...to be honest it was a very tough decision but

being at home with family and close friends and the opportunity to play for All Blacks, Hurricanes, Wellington I couldn’t leave.’ In other words, he didn’t offer anything new as a decision for turning his back on Pau (although to be fair, he hadn’t confirmed the Pau move himself in the first place). It was a surprise to hear that Savea, an integral All Blacks squad member who is only 25, was intending to leave anyway. He obviously didn’t fancy his chances of getting past Cane. A bewildered Pau accepted that u-turn, a spokesman saying it was the “risk you take when wanting to recruit a young player”. It has to be assumed New Zealand Rugby tried fairly hard to keep Savea in the first place. It is equally fair to assume they

were forced to up the ante (I’ve certainly heard rumours that other Super Rugby players are interested in what Savea is getting). Reading between the lines, analysing Cane’s own words, relying on a hunch ... I’d say the odds aren’t great on the muscular flanker returning to the top. His neck fracture, requiring immediate surgery, was a tragic and frightening reminder of what a tough sport rugby is, and how outstanding careers can suddenly be taken away. Apart from the unknowns when it comes to his physical recovery, there may be mental hurdles in such a high impact sport. This Ardie Savea story is really about a serious injury and probably – in rugby terms – serious money. Just saying. - NZME

NETBALL with a difference Walking netball has proven to be a great hit in Christchurch and now it’s coming to Ashburton. BY ERIN TASKER

Two new versions of netball are coming to Ashburton early this year and it’s hoped they will open up the game to a whole new group of players. Walking netball and a ladies’ daytime section are both set to hit the courts of Ashburton’s EA Networks Centre for the first time in term one, but registrations are

open now and Mid Canterbury Netball officials are hopeful the interest for both will be there. Mid Canterbury Netball netball development officer Natalie Shaw said if the interest is there, they hope both could run all four school terms next year. Walking netball is exactly how it sounds, netball where you walk instead of run. “The biggest rule difference is

you have to have one foot on the ground at all times,” Shaw said. Players also had four seconds to pass the ball off instead of the three-second rule in traditional netball. Shaw said walking netball had been a big hit in Christchurch. It wasn’t aimed at any particular age group, but Shaw said it could be good for people who suffered from injuries, or older people who

hadn’t played in some time but were keen to get back out on the court. Both of the new initiatives will get under way when school goes back for term one in 2019, with the ladies’ daytime section set to run on a Monday morning from 9.30am and the walking netball set to be played on Tuesday mornings from 9.30am. The ladies’ daytime section will

be shortened games, potentially two eight-minute halves, with rolling substitutes. It’s hoped the Tuesday sessions might prove a winner with mums. The first day of the ladies’ daytime section will be February 4, with walking netball’s Ashburton debut set for February 5. Lowndes happy to be a rookie for Le Mans Supercars legend Craig Lowndes has some bucket-list races he wants to tick off and won’t take umbrage at being designated a rookie if he gets a start in the famous Le Mans 24-hour event. The 44-year-old three-time Supercars champion and seven-time Bathurst 1000 winner finished as a fulltime Supercars driver at the end of last year, but will still do

the enduro events in 2019. He’s got the Bathurst 12-hour race in February and will be involved in media coverage of Supercars. His enduring popularity was underlined in December when he was named ABC Sports Personality of the Year. Lowndes has made no secret of his desire to do the Le Mans race, something he has pondered for

close to a quarter of a century. “There’s been opportunities in the past, but unfortunately it’s either clashed with Supercar rounds here in Australia, or we’ve been away and done other things, so it has been on the agenda since probably almost 1996,” Lowndes said. “It’s just getting the contacts with race teams.

“We already know the 2019 race weekend of Le Mans clashes with the Darwin race in Supercars, so thankfully I’ve been allowed to, if I can procure a drive, to be able to be released and be able to go and do that if I can. “Now it’s just putting out the feelers and seeing what’s out there.
