Vandalism and littering at Lake Hood has resulted in the installation of gates and security cameras. The gates to the boat ramp are locked at 10pm and re-opened at 7am daily. Lake Hood Aquatic Park manager Gilbert Murdoch said vandalism in the toilets, people lighting bonfires at the top end of the lake and general littering had forced the move. Young trees had also been damaged by vehicles. A security camera has been mounted on top of the Lake House restaurant in

an effort to control vandalism. It had a surveillance range of up to 500 metres. Murdoch said only a handful of people were responsible for the problem but others were fed up with cleaning up after that minority. “Ninety nine per cent of people agreed with the decision to lock the gate to keep some semblance of order.” The 10pm curfew allows time for boaties and jet skiers to get out the gate after the lake has closed for the night. “The lake is still accessible to fishermen – they can just walk down there,” Murdoch said. Arrangements have been put in place

to allow rowers access for early morning training. Many people took advantage of yesterday’s high temperatures to take to the water at Lake Hood. Patrollers have reported generally good behaviour on the water over the festive season. “People seem to be wearing life jackets and respecting each other,” Murdoch said. Boat registration, which was trialed at Lake Hood in 2013, has now been rolled out South Island-wide. Murdoch said almost all boats were now registered, aiding patrollers in identifying rule breakers.
