A truck driver and car passenger were fortunate to escape serious injury when gale force winds whipped through the district yesterday. At around 2.30pm, a gust picked up a truck and trailer unit and flipped it into the path of an oncoming car on State Highway 1. Police, St John Ambulance and fire and emergency teams raced

from Ashburton to the scene about two kilometres north of Fairton, and traffic diversions were put in place for northbound and southbound traffic. A police spokesperson said the driver of the car was taken to Ashburton Hospital with minor to moderate injuries. The driver of the truck was uninjured. The New Zealand Transport Agency reported that the road was cleared and reopened to traf-

fic in both directions by 5.15pm. Following the incident, police were urging motorists to take extreme care and delay all nonessential travel, “especially those in high-sided vehicles or on motorcycles”. Inland, the Methven Area Bus Group cancelled all after-school bus services for destinations other than Ashburton, Rakaia and Tinwald. Dozens of students at Mount

Hutt College and Methven Primary School were left waiting in the school hall, and those able to catch buses endured slow journeys home as the vehicles navigated through the windy conditions. Across the district, EA Networks staff were kept busy with a raft of callouts from trees falling on powerlines. Multiple power outages were reported across the district

throughout the afternoon. MetService issued a strong wind watch between 7am and 10pm for north to nor’wester gales on the Canterbury Plains and in Christchurch, as well as a heavy rain watch from 10am to 9pm. Graham’s Weather Station, in Netherby, recorded a maximum average wind speed of 56.4 km/hr and maximum gusts of 72.1km/hr yesterday.
