Big surge in job seekers BY SUE NEWMAN

New building goes up P4
The number of people out of work in the Ashburton District has hit a modern day high at the end of last year with 383 registered unemployed. An increase of 20 per cent over the previous December, it is the most significant jump in job seeker numbers for many years and outstrips the national rise of 5.2 per cent. For the first time in years, Ashburton’s unemployment numbers have risen at a rate well above most of New Zealand.
And that is showing through in the number of people on the books of Ashburton employment agencies says Agstaff consultant Blair O’Donnell. The number of locals on the agency’s books is about 10 per cent up on last year, he said. “The numbers are not huge, but they’re still quite a bit on the scale for Ashburton.” With the second chain at Silver Fern Farms plant not starting this season, there was an influx of ex-works staff looking for jobs, O’Donnell said.
To date, with harvest related jobs most had been able to pick up casual work, but once the harvest was wrapped up employment might not be so easy to find, he said. “We’ve been lucky, we’ve picked up some good clients this year so we’ve had more jobs and the work has flowed in but we never know what’s happening around the corner.”
