District’s water gets health tick BY SUE NEWMAN
SUE.N@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ
Drinking water supplies around the Ashburton District have received a string of gold stars in the latest ministry of Health water survey. And for consumers, there is no better guarantee they can have than knowing that when they turn their kitchen tap on, the water that flows will be absolutely safe to drink, says Ashburton District Council assets manager Andrew Guthrie. Since a gastro outbreak in Havelock North, believed to have been caused by contamination in the town’s water sup-
ply, there has been concern around New Zealand that other water supplies might not be secure. In the Ashburton District, contamination fears were unfounded, Guthrie said. When local authorities started reviewing their drinking water supplies in about 2005 to meet a set of higher standards, Ashburton was at the head of the pack, he said. “We developed a strategy for all supplies back then and it was very forward thinking at the time; a lot of other councils were pretty reticent about doing this.”
The council had always given a high priority to upgrading water supplies and had never held back from investing money in this work, Guthrie said. “We not only meet but try to exceed standards and our supplies are very tightly monitored; we take this seriously and go over and above the minimum standards.”
