Ashburton’s retailers want the Ashburton District Council to show some festive spirit by canning parking fees in the inner town in the lead-up to Christmas. Fifteen retailers have joined forces to present the council with a written request to have free parking to encourage people to bring their Christmas business to town rather than shopping online. The retailers say they have noticed a

significant reduction in foot traffic on East Street since the council installed its pay and display parking machines. “There have been ongoing complaints from customers about the difficulty using these meters, the inflexibility of the parking wardens and the subsequent challenges of finding another ticket dispenser if the nearest is out of order for whatever reason,” the retailers wrote. Because there were other shopping hubs in Ashburton where parking was

free, inner town retailers’ businesses were suffering, they said. Ashburton retailers, like their counterparts around the country were suffering at the hands of online shopping and they believe the pay to park regime in the inner town was providing people with a disincentive to shop there.

Swift on South Island family road trip US popstar Taylor Swift has shared a video of her being attacked by a bug while skimming stones over a crystalline southern lake. The 25-year-old is momentarily stunned before she swats away an unknown bug that flies into her face while she relaxes with her mother and brother during a recent break in Queenstown. Wearing Ugg boots and trackpants, Swift proudly takes a moment to crow about her stone throwing success before being bombarded by the insect. As well as the short family video, she posted a picture of her and her brother on the lake shore, against a snow-capped mountain backdrop. “Swift family road trip! South Island, NZ,” she wrote. Swift has now left New Zealand and flown to Australia’s Gold Coast yesterday, sources say. The singer is understood to be heading for Hamilton Island which is regarded as one of the most sought-after holiday destinations in Queensland’s tropical north. Swift arrived in Queenstown on a private jet on Sunday evening fresh from her 1989 World Tour concert in Sydney. It was the second time in less than a week the Grammy winner had stayed in the southern resort town. Earlier last week she spent two days in the South Island filming part of her new music video for Out of the Woods.

Korean pop singer Psy is back with his infectious dance moves and over-the-top lyrics in a new video clip for single Daddy. The strange video shows the Gangnam Style singer grow from a cheeky baby to a woman-crazed teen and later a frantically dancing old man. It features lyrics such as “you be my curry, I’ll be your rice”, and the track’s hook “I got it from my Daddy” a gender-swap of US singer Will.I.Am’s 2009 hit I Got It From My Mama. The song is set to feature on Psy’s new album Chiljip Psy-Da, Korean for This is Psy’s Seventh Album. Psy rocketed to fame in 2012 after his dance track Gangnam Style reached No.1 worldwide and he headlined the 2013 Future Music Festival.

Annie Leibovitz remakes Pirelli calendar It’s no more nudes for the famous Pirelli calendar – this year, at least, with photographer Annie Leibovitz at the helm. Instead of using famous models in skimpy outfits, or no outfits at all, Leibovitz has chosen high-octane professional women and photographed them for the most part fully clothed. The exceptions are comedian Amy Schumer and tennis champ Serena Williams, who are photographed in underwear bottoms. The calendar unveiled yesterday also includes portraits of singer Patti Smith, artist Yoko Ono, film mogul Kathleen Kennedy, director Ava DuVernay and others who have achieved great success. Leibovitz said Pirelli gave her the freedom she needed to pursue a different type of calendar. “I still can’t believe the women who agreed to do it did it,” Leibovitz said.

Police act on ‘you’re fat’ card British police have stepped in after a woman on London’s metro system was handed a card calling her a “fat, ugly human”. Health worker Kara Florish has tweeted she was handed the card while travelling on the Underground on Monday, describing it as “hateful” and “cowardly” and “could potentially upset people struggling with confidence”. She tweeted a picture of the card, which on one side said “fat” and on the other read: “Our organisation hates and resents fat people. We object to the enormous amount of food resources you consume while half the world starves. And we do not understand why you fail to grasp that by eating less you will be better off, slimmer, happy and find a partner who is not a perverted chubby-lover, or even find a partner at all,” the message continued. The card has triggered a social media storm, prompting police to urge anyone who has received one to get in touch.

Locums ‘impossible to get’ By Caitlin Porter

Ashburton GPs say doctors are turning up to work sick because there is no one else to do their job. Their comments come after the release of a study completed by the New Zealand Association of Salaried Medical Specialists (ASMS) which found many senior doctors and dentists routinely worked while they were ill. The report, Superheroes don’t take sick leave – Presenteeism in the New Zealand senior medical workforce a mixed method study by Dr Charlotte Chambers found this occurred because the health professionals were under intense pressure, had limited resources or were concerned

about the potential impact on colleagues. Thirty-eight per cent of respondents ranked their concern for a growing workload while on sick leave as another consideration for taking sick leave. Ashburton GP spokeswoman Dr Charlotte Cox said it was a common issue for GPs in Mid Canterbury, particularly those who were self-employed. A salaried GP with an employment contract would “most probably” take sick leave however, she said. While locums were an option for cover, Dr Cox said they were expensive and some GPs ran at a loss to employ them. Methven GP and Pegasus Health Board representative Dr

Gayle O’Duffy said locums for sick days were “virtually unavailable”. At her practice part-time staff were often asked to pick up extra work and if that is not an option “discretionary” appointments are cancelled. “Where possible, everyone works harder,” she said. Cover becomes much more of an issue when two or more clinicians are sick at the same time, she said. The report said health professionals working when sick posed a risk to both patients and practitioners. To combat this and reduce the number of sick doctors and dentists in the workplace the report suggested improving short

Heartland Bank’s Christmas tree is not just any Christmas tree, it is one which attracts kindness and spreads joy. Bank staff erect the tree each year, and in partnership with Birthright Ashburton, invite Christmas shoppers to drop off a wrapped gift for a child aged between zero and 18, with information on the suitable age and gender. Birthright field worker Christine Muff said it was heartening to see each year just how many people gave gifts. While only six presents were around the tree yesterday afternoon after the tree was erected the previous evening, she expected this would climb quickly. Last year by Christmas Eve the tree was surrounded by presents thigh-deep. The presents people left ranged from stocking fillers to larger ones, even one year including a new bicycle. Birthright was grateful for anything people might wish to drop off on their shopping travels. “A lot of people don’t have fam-

Stadium, gallery cost over $44m When all the bills were in, Ashburton District ratepayers have paid out more than $44 million for two significant community facilities. The final costs for the EA Networks Centre came in marginally ($19,118) below budget at $34,901,499. While construction costs made up most of this amount at $25.973 million, site works and architects’ fees added more than $2.5 million each to the total paid. The Ashburton Art Gallery and Museum had an all-up cost of $9,715,566 million, with $300,000 worth of interest costs added to this. The project came in more than $3 million over budget. To date the council has paid another $863,394 through its books to fit-out the centre. This money has come from a museum donation to the council, $142,000; historical acquisition fund, $14,000, Lottery fund, $200,000; ADC reserves, $67,710 and a council contribution of $450,000. The museum has spent about $180,000 of its own funds on display and fit-out and an additional $150,000 on the newly opened irrigation display. The Art Gallery has also spent some of its own funds on its fitout, but this amount has not been disclosed.

Ms Muff said many single-parent families were struggling, and Christmas made things all the more difficult. “There’s not a lot left for presents,” she said.

The free parking option will be up for debate by the council’s environmental services committee tomorrow and in a written report, environmental services group manager Jane Donaldson suggests the option of providing free car parking in the Eastfield area off Cass Street rather than making the entire town free to park.

The number of boxes of donations collected for Toot for Tucker has broken records once again. Over 200 volunteers packed into 46 vehicles on Monday night to collect donations for the annual Toot for Tucker food bank appeal. In its 15th year, a total of 320 banana boxes of donations were collected from the streets of Ashburton, Hinds and Lake Hood, with further donations still rolling in from the wider community. The number of boxes collected was 60 up on last year, which also broke records. Last year the sheer volume of donations resulted in Toot for Tucker moving to the Ashburton Racecourse to sort and organise the goods, a venue which served well this year. Toot for Tucker organiser Moyra Whiting said thanks had to be given to the volunteers who helped to collect, sort and organise the

donations after the collection on Monday evening. Groups from around the district showed their support including the Ashburton Air Training Corp, Hinds Rural Fire Force, Ashburton Cadet Unit, Rangers, Guides and Brownies as well as members from Zonta and various Lions Clubs, she said. “It was an amazing sight last night, the whole floor [of the Ashburton Racecourse] was covered in plastic bags full of food. “There is an amazing amount of compassion in the Ashburton community.” Ashburton County Lions member Barbara Borland agreed and said the support was fantastic. Everything collected in the appeal was split between the St Vincent de Paul food bank and the Community Food Bank, run by the Salvation Army. Late donations can be dropped directly into either of the food banks.

Nationally the Salvation Army is experiencing an increase in demand for its food parcels and the same can be said for Ashburton. Salvation Army Community Food Bank manager Judith Lilley said she had seen a slight increase in the demand for food parcels locally. This was down to a variety of reasons including the time of year, high rent and bills, she said. “It would be very hard to pinpoint the reason, everyone comes in for a different reason.” Mrs Lilley said food was one of the first things to go when

Buskers’ festival Mid Cantabrians are invited to a World Buskers Festival announcement at the East Street chessboard 10am today. A new Buskers Roadshow is to be included as part of the festival in January, and it will take in a number of towns including Ashburton. Just what performers this will feature is to be part of the announcement, which is expected to include a “real live taste of what the festival has to offer”, promoters said in a press release. The announcement will also be attended by Mayor Angus McKay and festival director Glen Pickering.

TV3 axes 3D TV3 current affairs programme 3D has officially been axed, with a spokeswoman confirming it will not be renewed next year. MediaWorks made the announcement shortly before 5pm yesterday. A spokeswoman said a consultation process with existing staff – including host Samantha Hayes – had come to a close and the decision was made not to renew the show in the new year. “MediaWorks would like to acknowledge the efforts and dedication of the 3D team who have consistently produced outstanding work over a long period of time.” - NZME

Dog scares attacker A dog scared away a man who attacked and sexually assaulted a 23-year-old woman as she ran through a Dunedin park on Monday night. The woman was attacked from behind at Ross Creek about 9.15pm, police said. She was knocked to the ground, tied up and sexually assaulted. Police said the offender ran from the scene after a light-coloured dog, possibly a labrador, ran up to them.

Fire restrictions imminent By SuSan SandyS

The Ashburton District Council could impose fire restrictions as early as this week as the district continues to dry out. Temperatures are forecast to hit 30 today with gusty nor’wests, after the mercury climbed to over 27 degrees four days in a row last week, and there was a high of around 25 yesterday. Just 12.6 millimetres of rain was received at the MetService’s Ashburton airport weather station for the month of November, compared to the long-term average of 63 millimetres. Showers are forecast for later this week, however principal rural fire officer Don Geddes said longterm forecasts were not showing the likelihood of significant rain before Christmas. As such fire restrictions would be imposed by then, and could even be introduced as early as this week. A total fire ban could follow, as it had last summer in drought conditions, limiting burning options for farmers. El nino conditions this year made such a prospect more likely. “We are looking very seriously at imposing restrictions in the near future but we haven’t actu-

conditions, while a permit from the council would be required for other outdoor burning in rural areas. In the case of a fire ban, which was introduced in mid-January

this year and lasted about one month, no burning is allowed, including crop stubble. For residential areas, outdoor fires are not permitted in Can-

terbury year-round under the regional air plan. Mr Geddes reminded farmers that even in the case of no restrictions, which was the case now, farmers still needed to be responsible and should not be rushing out to undertake burning. They still needed to make sure they had fire breaks, fire suppression resources on hand and looked at the weather forecast. While it was not yet the time in the season where stubble burning was generally undertaken, other burning was under way in rural areas such as that for hedge trimmings, debris remaining after the 2013 September windstorm, and debris from the ongoing removal of shelter belts to make way for centre pivots. “Before they light the match they should think of the ‘what ifs’,” Mr Geddes said. Meanwhile, the district’s firerisk indicator boards, where an arrow points to risks ranging from “low” to “extreme”, are showing a fire risk of “high”, up from “moderate” last week. Mr Geddes said the risk would stay at “high” for now, however, if there was a few days of hot dry nor’westers “potentially we could bump it up another notch”, which would be to “very high”.

Two long serving college teachers retire

Denis Saunders

Ashburton College will lose 80 years of service when two stalwarts leave at the end of this year. Head of technology Steve Wood will depart the school after 44 years and Year 12 dean Denis Saunders after 36 years. Mr Wood was appointed to the position of assistant master in technical drawing and mathematics by telegram on October 16, 1971.

He progressed through a number of different positions before entering into his current role as head of technology in the 1990s. He has been involved in soccer, a number of college committees, producing the senior courses booklet and in Red House as sportsmaster. Mr Saunders started at Ashburton College in 1979 as a young teacher for a two-term science/

mathematics position. His career was cemented the next year and not long after he was appointed to a role as tutor – now known as dean. He has continued in similar roles and is the longest serving dean the college has had. Mr Saunders has been involved in the PPTA, PTA, soccer, health, fundraising committee and was head of Green House.

Annual Santa parade all set to roll BY SUSAN SANDYS

Thousands are expected to flock to the Hyundai Mid Canterbury Santa Parade in Ashburton on Saturday. Organiser Carol Johns is thrilled with about 100 entries, representing floats and a wide range of vehicles, from bicycles to fire engines. There would also be people walking, and businesses had sponsored a wide range of costumes for both children and adults to wear. “Last year I struggled to get people to wear them, but this year they have all gone,” said Mrs Johns. Among them was literary characters such as Tigger, as well as clowns, a Christmas cracker and Bananas in Pyjamas outfits, one of the latter of which would be worn by Mrs John’s colleague Phill Hooper. “I think it will be a huge success this year, as it was last year,” Mrs Johns said. Last year had been the first year she had organised the parade, which was a long-

time annual tradition in the town. She said it had been fantastic to see young and old turn out for it, and line the streets in their thousands. “They came from everywhere,” she said. There were 13 new floats this year, and a wide range of groups and organisations were represented. Props for the last float carrying Santa and dozens of children as fairies and elves had had a major upgrade, courtesy of Ashburton Menzshed. Reindeers and sleighs had been repainted and the sleigh had a new door. Those in the parade would gather at Mona Square from midday, and the parade would begin 12.30pm, travel down East Street and around Baring Square before returning to Mona Square. From shortly after 11am Ronald McDonald, the balloon man, lollies and colouring-in-competition judging would be held on the East Street chessboard.

Lomu farewelled Draped in his No11 All Blacks shirt, Jonah Lomu’s coffin was carried on the backs of his pallbearers into the South Auckland church where his final farewell was held. His funeral, which took place yesterday morning at the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-day Saints in Mangere, was attended by 950 family and friends who said their last goodbyes to a much-loved friend, son, brother, cousin, nephew, father and husband. Lomu’s two young sons, Brayley and Dhyreille, took centre stage after the opening songs and prayers to pay a musical tribute to their father. The boys, dressed in black shirts with the silver fern on the front and Lomu’s No11 on the back, sang a duet, I am a child of God. The service’s official eulogy was given by the president of the Auckland New Zealand Mt Roskill stake of the church, Anthony Wilson, who spoke of Lomu’s journey of faith. “He was a big man, an athletic prodigy,” he said. “[But] Jonah found a spiritual home close to his South Auckland roots.” He spoke of Lomu’s work with the church’s youth and others around the country and the world. “He has lived a life that passed with great abundance; it’s time for us to take the baton and move forward.” Other family members and close friends took to the lectern at the front of the church, which had been adorned with a number of pale yellow and white roses, paying tribute to Lomu’s life beyond the sports field. Nadene Lomu’s father, Merv Quirk, spoke about his sadness at losing a son, a son he’d also had the privilege of baptising

and welcoming into their church. “It’s [the baptism] a fond memory I have of Jonah,” he said. “I was his biggest fan, long before I met him.” Mr Quirk recalled the “heart-warming” good times of seeing the devoted father dance and sing with his boys and wife. “I’m going to miss him very much, I know Nadene will, the boys will and they were very brave to sing his song.” Lomu’s brother, John Lomu, said while he touched the hearts of many people throughout the world, “no one will ever know the pain of a brother or a sister”. He spoke of the good times growing up with his older brother as they “aspired to be the best they could be and follow in the footsteps of our heroes”. John Lomu finished by reading a poem in memory of his brother. “Jonah, you came into our hearts like lightning in the sky, you came into our lives like a teardrop in my eye, our love is anything and everything till I die. Because of true love, we will never say goodbye.” Dr John Mayhew spoke of how Lomu did not let his medical struggles put him down. “He dealt with life-threatening illness with no self pity. “Jonah to me was humble, no ego, honest in his opinions and generous to a fault ... He even liked having tea in fine china tea cups.” Dr Mayhew described a man who went above and beyond for the children he met through his charitable work. “You have enriched my life in so many ways _ rest in peace my friend.” At the end of the almost two-hour-long service, Lomu’s sons led the family procession out of the church, holding hands with their grandfather. - NZME

Retail, it’s a tough business to be in Sue Newman

ou have to have some sympathy with Ashburton’s retailers who’re making a pitch for a parking meter-free Christmas. Gone are the days when if you sold the right goods at the right price and your shop was in the right part of town, you were almost guaranteed to make a tidy living. Today’s retailers have a much tougher job than at any other time in history. They’re battling not only healthy competition from others in their line of business, but they’re also battling the one bogey that is becoming the retail goliath, online shopping. We’re all guilty of whipping online to check what’s on offer when we’re thinking of making a purchase. While many take a look and shop locally anyway, for a growing number of people, online is where it’s at. And it’s easy to understand. It’s hassle-free shopping. Select the item you want, click the button, hand over your credit card details and sit back and wait for your goods to be delivered to your door. But in doing that, online shoppers are missing out on what has always been key in retail, the opportunity to discuss your purchase, feel what you’re buying and, if it’s clothing, try it for size. Most of us have experienced buying an item online, having it delivered and realising it was a far cry from what we thought we’d bought. Too late. Buyers’ remorse has no place in online transactions. Without bricks and mortar retail we would have no town centre. All Ashburton would be left with would be a handful of cafes, bars and restaurants. The hospitality experience is about the only thing that can’t be bought without leaving your computer chair. We need to jealously guard and perhaps protect our inner town retail heart. There needs to be every reason for new businesses to come to town and there needs to be every reason for shoppers to patronise and support those businesses. Free parking is one way to ensure that happens. Check out Ashburton’s big box retail hubs west of the main street to see what happens when you can park up and shop for as long as you like.

YOUR VIEW Toot for tucker On behalf of the Ashburton County Lions Club I wish to sincerely thank the residents of Ashburton, Lake Hood and Hinds who donated so very generously to our appeal on Monday evening. Volunteers from many service clubs, local businesses and youth organisations gave willingly of their time to assist in the collection of food items. Several of these people remained at the Racecourse collection point until all sorting and packing had been completed. For that, we heartily thank you. y recent trip to China proved successful on many levels. I had the privilege of revitalising our sister city relationship with Puyang, a city of approximately 3.5 million people, and introducing our district to Xi’an. The population of Xi’an is nearly three times that of Puyang and it is home to the Fineboon Group with whom we have a contractual agreement for their new goat milk powder factory in the Ashburton Business Estate. This trip was to establish stronger connections for present and future trade opportunities. As the leading agricultural district in New Zealand we have an abundant array of products to offer a country that is struggling to supply its people with sufficient food, especially the high value end of the market. The decision by the Chinese Government to abandon the one child policy will mean further increase in demand for products that this district is very good at producing: meat products, honey, cows’ milk and, in the near future, goat milk powder. The people I met were also very intrigued to learn that we have scenery equal to any around the world, snow-clad mountains, blue water in our rivers and our green fields broken by the colour of the different seed crops grown here. For the Chinese, the relationship with Ashburton is critical as it is the gateway to New Zealand for both the cities of Puyang and Xi’an as they have no other ties to any other New Zealand-based organisation or town. One of the ways we help to establish stronger links is through enrolling Chinese students into schools and tertiary education establishments here. There is potential to expand the manufacturing sector within our district by inviting more Chinese businesses, such as Fineboon New Zealand Dairy Collaborative Group, to establish themselves at our business estate. Other participants were Willy Leferink, president of Mid Canterbury Federated Farmers, Geraldine Ling and Jonathan Lee both from Fineboon New Zealand Dairy Collaborative Group. It was great to have two Mandarin interpreters supporting the Ashburton group, ensuring good communication and understanding. In China, the head of the city is called the secretary-general and the appointed CEO is called the mayor – a bit different to us here in New Zealand. Our delegation met with the Secretary-General of Puyang and Mayor of Xi’an, where we spoke about co-investment opportunities and training, education and economic devel-

opment prospects. We had an official signing ceremony for an agreement to develop a sister city relationship with Xi’an going forward. This agreement just sets out the basic principles of working on establishing a sound relationship of exchanges and co-operation in trade, technology, culture, education and other fields between Xi’an and Ashburton. I believe we have made a great start and expect our visits to be more frequent between the two countries. The Secretary-General of Puyang and the Mayor of Xi’an have both accepted invitations to visit Ashburton when the public opening of the Fineboon factory happens next year. I look forward

to welcoming them both and to seeing them again. This will be another opportunity for any businesses or people that might be interested in the future development of trade to China. The visit was combined with some wonderful cultural experiences. Our hosts spared no expense in giving us the full royal treatment – we had lead car escorts wherever we went and attended some amazing performances, such as acrobatic shows. The visits to museums, factories, gardens and schools were enlightening. I was impressed with the level of English by school children who asked me questions about Ashburton. I suspect they may like to come and experience our district on exchange or do their preparation to go on to a university here in New Zealand if given the chance. Fonterra considers its options BY FIONA ROTHERHAM Fonterra Co-operative Group is considering its options, including an appeal, after losing a High Court case taken by former suppliers to the failed New Zealand Dairies milk processing plant at Studholme who challenged the legality of inferior supply contracts they were offered by the dairy giant. The nub of the case was wheth-

er Fonterra, which bought the Studholme plant from the receivers in 2012, was lawfully able to offer the former suppliers to the plant so-called “growth contracts” on inferior terms in order to placate its existing farmer suppliers. In a written decision released yesterday, Justice Matthew Muir said Fonterra’s reasons for doing so stemmed from a “perceived need to assuage internal politics

within its supplier base and included also an element of ‘messaging’ for the benefit of other farmers who might in the future be persuaded to leave Fonterra and support an independent.” Mike Cronin, Fonterra’s group director governance and legal, said the co-operative was disappointed with the outcome and was now reviewing the reasoning as well as the implications of the decision. - NZME

If I was to ask you whether you would rather see a Registered Financial Adviser (RFA) or an Authorised Financial Adviser (AFA) which would you choose? Understandably most people wouldn’t know and would probably choose the Registered Financial Adviser perhaps because their builder is registered. While RFAs need to be on a register and have a dispute resolution scheme, there are not many

further requirements of them. AFAs on the other hand have to pass exams in finance, complete continuing professional development and abide by a code of professional conduct. Although an RFA isn’t allowed to mislead you similar to your butcher can’t sell you mince and call it steak, an AFA is legally required to consider your overall situation, provide you with the most suitable financial product and put your interests before their own. They would have to work out what cut of meat was the best for you, how much you can afford and how you are going to ration it. Switching back to the ACL sports injury analogy, what if I asked you what type of doctor you would rather see, a General Practitioner or a specialist? A lot of Kiwis rely on investment ad-

With investing you need specialists who understand portfolio construction, asset allocation and credit ratings to help you make the best decisions. Thankfully the government is currently reviewing the legislation and it’s looking likely that all advisers will have to meet minimum educational and ethical standards. Distinction is also likely to be made between financial salespeople and true advisers. In the meantime a lot can be discovered by asking your adviser three simple questions: what do those letters next to your name mean, how many different companies’ products do you provide and how you are compensated? Scientist ‘can clone humans’ By ReBecca Davis The Chinese scientist behind the world’s biggest cloning factory has the technology to replicate humans and is only holding off for fear of a public backlash. Boyalife Group and its partners are building a giant plant in the northern Chinese port of Tianjin, where it is due to go into production within the next seven months and aims for an output of one million cloned cows a year by 2020. But cattle are only the beginning of chief executive Xu Xiaochun’s ambitions. In the factory pipeline are also thoroughbred racehorses, as well as pet and police dogs, specialised in searching and sniffing. Boyalife is already working with its South Korean partner Sooam and the Chinese Academy of Sciences to improve primate cloning capacity to create better test animals for disease research. And it is a short biological step from monkeys to humans - potentially raising a host of moral and ethical controversies. “The technology is already there,” Xu said. “If this is allowed, I don’t think there are other companies better than Boyalife that make better technology.” The firm does not currently

engage in human cloning activities, Xu said, adding that it has to be “self-restrained” because of a possible adverse reaction. But social values can change, he pointed out, citing changing views of homosexuality and suggesting that in time humans could have more choices about their own reproduction. “Unfortunately, currently, the only way to have a child is to have it be half its mum, half its dad,” he said. “Maybe in the future you have three choices instead of one, you

either have fifty-fifty, or you have a choice of having the genetics 100 per cent from Daddy or 100 per cent from Mummy. “This is only a choice.” Xu, 44, went to university in Canada and the US, and has previously worked for US pharmaceutical giant Pfizer, and in drug development. Presenting cloning as a safeguard of biodiversity, the Tianjin facility will house a gene bank capable of holding up to approximately five million cell samples frozen in liquid nitrogen - a cata-

logue of the world’s endangered species for future regeneration. Boyalife’s South Korean partner Sooam is already working on a project to bring the woolly mammoth back from extinction by cloning cells preserved for thousands of years in the Siberian permafrost. Sooam also serves a niche market recreating customers’ dead pet dogs, reportedly for $US100,000 a time. Sooam founder Hwang WooSuk was a national hero with his own postage stamp before being embroiled in controversy a decade ago after his claims to be the first in the world to clone a human embryo were discredited. Hwang, who created Snuppy, the world’s first cloned dog, in 2005, lost his university position, had two major papers retracted, and was accused of crimes ranging from violation of bioethics laws to embezzling research funds. Baby buried alive California authorities are looking for the mother of a newborn baby girl who was buried alive near a Compton bike path. The girl, believed to be less than 36 hours old, was cold to the touch and was hospitalised in stable condition. Two people out walking heard a sound. Activity in China’s manufacturing sector has contracted for a fourth straight month to a three-year low, adding to signs of persistent economic sluggishness despite a flurry of stimulus moves. The official Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) fell to 49.6 in November from the previous month’s reading of 49.8, according to the National Bureau of Statistics, lagging expectations of 49.8 from analysts polled by Reuters. With subdued demand at home and abroad, activity in China’s factories shrank in October for a third straight month, fuelling fears the economy may be cooling more rapidly than expected. - Reuters

e might have more cows than sheep on New Zealand’s farms today, but in the eyes of much of the world we’re still known for our prime lamb. Unfortunately for many people lamb has almost priced itself out of their budget, but if it’s on special or you’re early enough in store to buy a pack of reducedprice meat, then you can still enjoy a meal based around lamb without breaking the budget. And as lamb has priced itself out of many shopping trolleys, the good old Kiwi roast has gone with it. Most families now enjoy their lamb as steaks, mince or sliced in stir-fries or casseroles.

Lamb curry 500g lamb diced 1T oil 1 onion, finely chopped 3 cloves garlic, crushed 2.5cm piece fresh ginger, peeled and finely grated 4 cardamom pods 2 star anise 1T mild curry powder 1t ground coriander 1t ground cumin 1t garam masala 3-4T tomato paste 350ml water 1t sugar 1-2T mango chutney ■ Heat oil in a heavy-based saucepan ■ Add onion, garlic and ginger and cook until the onion is soft, about 10 minutes. ■ Add spices and cook until fragrant. ■ Add tomato paste and lamb and stir to coat lamb in the spices. ■ Pour in the water and bring up to the boil ■ Reduce heat to low and simmer

■ Cook the couscous according to the directions on the packet, using the stock instead of water. ■ Cool slightly. ■ Season the lamb steaks on both side with the coriander, turmeric and paprika. ■ Heat 1 tablespoon of oil in a frying pan over a high heat ■ Cook steaks for 3-4 minutes each side until medium rare. ■ Rest for 5 minutes before slicing. ■ Heat a large frying pan over medium-high heat. ■ Brush the slices of eggplant with

oil, season with salt and pepper. ■ Fry for a few minutes each side until golden brown. ■ Set aside. ■ In the same pan, heat a little oil over medium-high heat. ■ Add the courgette, red onion, spinach and garlic and sauté until tender. ■ Combine in a large bowl with the couscous, tomatoes, almonds and feta. ■ Mix lemon juice, yoghurt, and fresh herbs together in a bowl and season. ■ Place slices of eggplant on each plate. ■ Top with the couscous salad and the sliced lamb. ■ Drizzle with the yoghurt dressing and sprinkle with coriander.

Mongolian lamb 600g lamb leg steaks, trimmed and thinly sliced 1T cornflour 1T canola oil 1 red onion, thinly sliced 1 green capsicum, thinly sliced 1 red capsicum, thinly sliced 2t garlic 1T grated ginger 2T hoisin sauce 4 sliced green onions Steamed rice to serve ■ Place lamb in a bowl. Add cornflour. Toss to combine. ■ Heat canola oil in a wok. Stir-fry lamb until almost cooked. ■ Remove from pan. ■ Add red onion, capsicums, garlic and ginger ■ Stir-fry for 3 to 5 minutes or until just tender. ■ Return lamb to pan with hoisin sauce combined with 1/4 cup water. ■ Add green onions. ■ Toss to combine. Cook until heated through.

■ Serve with steamed rice.

Lamb casserole 2T olive oil 1kg lean boneless lamb meat, cut into bite-sized cubes 2 rashers streaky bacon, chopped 1 large onion, chopped 2 cloves garlic, finely chopped 1 large carrot, peeled and roughly chopped 2 chorizo sausages, roughly sliced 1 1/2 C red wine 1 1/2 C beef stock 1T tomato paste 2 sprigs fresh thyme 2 sprigs fresh rosemary 400g tin cannellini beans, drained well salt to taste freshly ground pepper to taste crusty bread to serve ■ Preheat oven to 160°C. ■ Heat the oil in a large, flameproof casserole dish and brown the meat in batches. ■ Set the meat and any juices aside in a dish. ■ Add a little extra oil if necessary to cook bacon and onion until onion is soft and transparent. ■ Add the garlic, carrot and chorizo and cook for a further two minutes. ■ Return the meat and any juices to the casserole dish. ■ Increase the heat and add the wine, stock and tomato paste, thyme and rosemary. ■ Cover the casserole dish with the lid and cook in the oven for 1 1/2 hours. ■ Remove the casserole from the oven and stir in the drained beans. ■ Return the casserole to the oven and cook for a further 30 minutes. ■ Adjust the seasoning to taste. Serve with crusty bread.

When mist rises from the marshlands around Amberley, Mt Grey looks like it is floating. It is a vision of beauty which could no doubt be masterfully conveyed in the words of a great poet, one such as Bernadette Hall. The award-winning writer will be at the Ashburton Art Gallery tomorrow talking about her exhibition Matakaea, representing a collaboration with Christchurch multi-media artist Robyn Webster. Ms Hall lives at Amberley Beach in a renovated fisherman’s bach with her husband John. The couple moved from Christchurch to the small beach settlement in 2003. Being an avid gardener, she has established a cottage garden in the sandy section, which once featured only car parts and a single red geranium. After a long, professional life as a high school teacher, specialising in Latin, classical studies and English, Ms Hall said she found living in retirement in North Canterbury was “like a dream come true”. She could now regard herself as a fulltime writer. And being close to the sea in the path of nor’west winds has opened her eyes to the beauty and challenges of living in a harsh environment. Her new work, to be published early in 2016, is entitled Maukatere, Floating Mountain. Maukatere is the Te Reo name for Mt Grey, the mountain which dominates Hurunui. “When mists rise from the marshlands and the lagoons close to Amberley, the mountain does indeed appear to be floating,” she said. Ms Hall’s published work includes 10 collections of poetry. Poetry awards have taken her to Iowa, Ireland and Antarctica. She is a co-founder of the Hagley Writers’ Institute in Christchurch and a couple of weeks before the opening of Matakaea, she was invited to Wellington to receive the Prime Minister’s Award for literary achievement in poetry. In brief Nadolo off to France Crusaders winger Nemani Nadolo has confirmed that he will move to France to play for the Montpellier Club after the 2016 Super Rugby season. Nadolo will leave straight after the Super Rugby season ends and has signed a three year contract with Montpellier. Terry O’Neill felt “relief and a sense of achievement” after crossing the finish line at the New York Marathon in his racing wheelchair last month. O’Neill, who injured his spine after falling from a tree almost three years ago, raised $11,000 in total for the Catwalk Spinal Cord Injury Trust, and insisted the marathon was an experience he’ll never forget. The 51-year-old’s racing chair weighed just 8kg, and the chas-

sis was given to him by former wheelchair racer Ben Lucas, who captained New Zealand at the Atlanta and Sydney Olympic Games. After training up to five times a week leading up to the marathon, O’Neill was ready for the challenge, but a slow puncture in his left tyre during the race put a spanner in the works. “A few people said to us that the marathon starts when you get to Central Park, and that’s where it started for me,” he said. “It got really hard.

“There’s a slow and steady incline, the tyre, plus my fatigue and the hill was the toughest part of the course.” With the finish line almost in sight, O’Neill had another incline to contend with, but this time he was spurred on by the animated New York crowd and finished in just over three hours. “The finish was interesting. “Right at the finish there is another little hill and the tyre was worse,” he said. “I was fatigued, but I was the only one there, and the whole

crowd was shouting ‘push, push’. “I had goose bumps, it was epic, it was amazing.” O’Neill enjoyed a well-earned break after completing the gruelling 42km course, visiting Washington, and road tripping south to take in the sights of New Orleans, Tampa, Savannah and St. Augustine. When asked where his next challenge will take him, O’Neill was unsure, but is keen to head back to the US, for a second bite of the Big Apple.

Tyson Fury claims he suffered from dehydration after his shock heavyweight title win against Wladimir Klitschko because he refused to drink water in his dressing room in case it was drugged in a bid to discredit him. Winning run timed to perfection Stephen McNally and Scarlett Falcon ran the perfect race yesterday at the Ashburton Trotting Club’s workouts to take the third of the day, pipping pacemaker Ken Barron’s Livadia in the dying stages of the race. A field of eight maidens made a tidy job of running the 2400 metres almost faultlessly, but it was a race where the challenges only came in the dying stages of the race. Ken Barron gave himself double chances of success, with Livadia and Pure Opulence lining up behind the mobile and while he didn’t quite make line honours, Livadia (Changeover-Kotare Yalta) finished second and Pure Opulence (Art Major-Tarena Jay), third. For almost 2000 metres the field ran in unchanging Indian file, but when they turned for home, they were all looking for gaps with any five potentially finishing in the first three. In perfect racing conditions, Scarlett Falcon (Elsu-Genuine Franco) ran the 2400 metres in 3.02.9, 800, 57.7, 400m, 27.2 to win by 1.5 lengths.

ocal athletes Aimee Elliott, Matthew Clough and Courtney Elliott were in exceptional form at the Jennian Homes New Zealand Aquathlon Championships at Pilot Bay, Mount Maunganui on Saturday. Aimee Elliott and Clough contested their respective under 18 events of a 1km swim in Pilot Bay, followed by a 5.5km run, while Courtney Elliott competed in the under-16 event which consisted of a 500m swim and 2.5km run. Fifteen-year-old Clough won the under 18 men’s section following a superb performance and placed third overall in the open event in a time of 30:59. By winning the under 18 race, Clough earned selection for the New Zealand team to compete at the World Aquathlon Championships in Cozumel, Mexico, in September next year. Not to be outdone, 12-year-old Courtney Elliot placed first in the under 14 girls’ race with a time of 18.31, and 16-year-old Aimee was seventh in the under 18 women’s event in 37.15.

Agents doing fine Premier League clubs splashed out over NZ$297 million on agents’ fees last year - a $16.5 million increase on the previous 12 months. Discipline key as cyclists build for World Cup One adjective springs to mind when entering Cambridge’s Avantidrome as New Zealand’s top cyclists prepare for the World Cup this weekend - gladiatorial. Athletes wind down through a concrete block corridor to a minimalist interior as litter-free as Singapore in the reign of Lee Kuan Yew. The only sights and sounds existing in this decluttered zone are gym equipment, exercycles, ticking clocks and a constant vroom. The New Zealand team warm up, slip into lycra, don helmets, grab bikes and trot on cleat-clad shoes up the stairs to the track. They saddle up before coaches and support staff release them to fly solo, like birds from cupped hands. Eddie Dawkins describes his main discipline, the team sprint, as “fight or flight”. Unequivocal training calls are bellowed in crisp staccato. At one stage a dogtrialling whistle even sears the cloistered air to garner attention. A strict training regime means discipline is key in this steepbanked parade ground. Emblazoned on the entry wall are Track Rules and a Code of Conduct, including instructions such as ‘no spitting or blowing nose on track’ and ‘wipe your tyres BEFORE riding’.

Soon the motorbike - a Yamaha that looks like it came off the showroom floor - sets the pace. A learned chum suggests it’s time to play “chase-the-postie”. Off it zooms and the riders dutifully pursue as a piston-pumping carbon fibre train. Eventually riders call off the chase, peeling off up the banking. This is the epicentre of Cycling New Zealand’s track programme. A corps of tuned pedallers will venture from here to Rio next year, endeavouring to add to the country’s six Olympic velodrome medals. New Zealand earned its first in 1992 - Gary Anderson’s bronze in the individual pursuit. At Athens in 2004 that was supplemented by Sarah Ulmer’s world record gold, also in the now Games defunct IP. The remaining four medals have come at the last two Games as part of the legacy high performance director Mark Elliott is building. Verdict will have repercussions The head of the New Zealand Cricket Players’ Association fears the Cairns’ case will make players of all codes think twice before coming forward with allegations of match-fixing. Association chief executive Heath Mills said he was in no doubt the attack on the integrity of witnesses during the trial would send warning signals to any sportsperson thinking of speaking out. “This will make people think twice before they come forward with information in the future for not just cricket but sport in general when it comes to fighting match-fixing,” said Mr Mills.

He said it had been a nightmare process for both the players and their families in which their personal integrity had been questioned in the witness box. The game’s administrators urgently needed to find a way for people to come forward with confidence and not be made to feel like a victim. He called for governments and police to take a greater role in the fight against match-fixing. “I do think the ICC [International Cricket Council] anti-corruption unit has done great work but it’s certainly limited in what it can do given it’s not a sworn police

force working within it,” he said. Radio Sport cricket commentator Bryan Waddle said he was pleased for Cairns but was concerned New Zealand cricket had been tarnished. “I’m happy for Chris Cairns. “It means he doesn’t face a term of imprisonment but I wonder if a lot is going to change much in the world of cricket.” He said New Zealand cricket circles should take no pleasure in what had happened. “It’s been a case of some of New Zealand cricket’s biggest names against each other and those sorts of things don’t go away in a hurry.

“There is too much evidence that reflected badly on New Zealand and New Zealand cricket in general.” At this stage it was hard to know how much damage had been done to the sport’s reputation. “I have this horrible feeling the chapter’s going to be written again somewhere else in the future,” said Waddle. Meanwhile Cairns has lashed out at New Zealand Cricket and former players for their treatment of his father Lance. In an interview with Newstalk ZB’s Mike Hosking after he was cleared of charges of perjury and

perverting the course of justice, Cairns said that family was at the forefront of his mind. The former New Zealand allrounder refrained from offering any criticism of Lou Vincent and Black Caps skipper Brendon McCullum, saving his ire for the officials at New Zealand Cricket. “Dad, I really feel for him,” Cairns said of his father, who is held in high esteem not just in New Zealand cricket circles but around the world. There were people that he played with in the 70s and 80s, and we all have fond memories of those teams, but they turned their back on him.” - NZME
