A shortage of GPs in Mid Canterbury is likely to develop in the next decade as older doctors in the district retire. However, new practice developments such as the proposed Eastfield Health and the growing Three Rivers Health may help ease the situation. The prospect of a shortage of doctors in Mid Canterbury came to light in a recent submission by Eastfield Health developers to the Ashburton District Council, where they mentioned an increase in patients turning up to Ashbur-

ton Hospital for urgent medical attention. Responding to the claims, hospital general manager Bernice Marra confirmed the hospital’s Acute Assessment Unit (AAU) had experienced a consistent increase in presentations. However, this may not be due to patients having been unable to get a doctor’s appointment. “There has been anecdotal reporting from patients that some of these presentations are due to their inability to get an appointment with their local primary care provider, but we do not capture
this information at the time of presentation,” Marra said. Eastfield Health also quoted in its submission a GP to patient ratio for Mid Canterbury of 1:2682. However, Marra said there was variation between practices in the district, and this was consistent with the national picture.
