After meeting the information needs of the travelling public for many years, the Ashburton and Methven i-Sites are up for closure. Declining visitor numbers and income over the past 12 months and a desire to use available funds for a new tourism strategy means the closure of the two iSites is likely, says Experience Mid Canterbury (EMC) general manager Bruce Moffat. The EMC board is now seeking feedback from its i-Site staff on the potential closure of the centres at Ashburton and Methven, he said. The closure of the two sites and Expe-
rience Mid Canterbury’s official visitor website were originally recommended in an Ashburton District Council McGredyWinder Section 17A Review of EMC in April 2016. In his report Peter Winder said ...“ In order to free up the scale of resources that would be required to make a significant progress in attracting, developing and growing events, EMC would need to close both i-Sites and close the Mid Canterbury website.” “There are two activities that offer greater potential returns than operating i-Sites, or developing and promoting a website that will always have limited traffic. They are: marketing and promotional activity that increases use of
Mt Hutt and attracting, developing and growing events in the district.” Winder was not alone in suggesting the i-Sites should be closed. On several occasions over the past few years, Ashburton District councillors have pushed for closure, but backed off after Experience Mid Canterbury made a strong case for their retention. “While the board has decided not to close the website because of an increased number of website visits, we do need to consider the closure of the centres and using any available funds for a new tourism strategy,” Moffat said.

Little resigns; Ardern in Jacinda Ardern is promising that Labour will run the “campaign of our lives” after a whirlwind morning in which she was elected the party’s leader just seven weeks before election day. And she has begun her leadership with a warning to Prime Minister Bill English: “Don’t be complacent”. Ardern will reveal a new campaign platform before the end of the week, though wholesale changes are unlikely because of the short time remaining until the general election. She was selected as leader in a unanimous vote yesterday morning, and Te Tai Tokerau MP Kelvin Davis was chosen as her deputy unopposed – believed to be the first Maori to hold the position. Her promotion to the top job came after
former Labour leader Andrew Little announced he would stand down because of a string of poor poll results, saying the party “deserved better” and that it needed a campaign uncluttered by questions about leadership and polls. Ardern held her first press conference as leader in the Parliament’s stately legislative chamber, a space reserved for big political occasions. By her side was Davis and the party’s front bench – Grant Robertson, Phil Twyford, Megan Woods, Chris Hipkins, Carmel Sepuloni, David Clark, David Parker and Stuart Nash. “Everyone knows that I have just accepted – with short notice – the worst job in politics,” she said. “But I also welcome this job.” Ardern has previously sworn that she

Labour candidate for Rangitata Jo Luxton believes her party can turn around poor poll results now there are fresh faces at the helm. She said former leader Andrew Little’s decision to stand down yesterday had been “selfless and courageous”, and she fully supported new leader Jacinda Ardern and her deputy Kelvin Davis. Internal poll results leaked to the media this week showed the party taking a dive in the popularity stakes, having just 23 per cent support, down six points from a similar poll in June. Luxton said watching Ardern’s media standup following the announcement, she was confident the party could turn around its poll fortunes. “People are coming out of the woodwork across New Zealand offering to volunteer since today’s announcement,” she said yesterday afternoon. “I have every confidence that Jacinda and Kelvin will lead a fantastic campaign going forward, and will work tirelessly over the next seven weeks. I believe we can still get into government,” Luxton said. Ardern has been billed by political commentators as having the X-factor and her appointment being a potential election game-changer. However, National’s Rangitata candidate Andrew Falloon does not see her as a threat. Rather his focus was on working on important Ashburton issues. “I’m not interested in being a commentator on Labour’s inability to govern themselves,” he said. “My job for the next seven weeks is to explain why it’s important a National-led Government is re-elected, and why it’s important people vote for me as a strong local representative in that Government,” Falloon said. “I’m proud to represent a stable and united National Party, 100 per cent focused on delivering positive results for New Zealanders, rather than wasting time on internal squabbles.”

Wheelie bins ready to roll By Katie todd

Ashburton’s 19,000 new wheelie bins are about to become acquainted with their new homes and families, as delivery kicks off around the district. Yellow-lidded recycling bins, red-lidded rubbish bins and green glass recycling crates will be delivered to homes throughout this month, in preparation for the new kerbside collection service beginning September 1. Ashburton District Council waste recovery manager Craig Goodwin said the team was excited about the process being under way. Despite the scale of the new service, and the vast number of logistical tasks to complete, he said he was pleased with the current progress. “It’s worked out really well,” he said. “We’ve consolidated with all the other services – the resource and recovery parks, the drop-off sites – everything to tee it up so we all complement one another and can work together successfully.” As of yesterday, the depot was teeming with all but two truck-
loads of the new bins. Delivery would begin as soon as these arrived, and the instructional booklets had been taped to their lids. The new service is set to roll out in Ashburton, Chertsey, Methven, Mt Somers, Mayfield, Hinds and Rakaia alongside other properties which haven’t previously received council kerbside collection services like Lake Hood, Fairton and Winslow. Envirowaste manager Dan Redmond said the new rubbish trucks would land in town next month, and the two appointed drivers were in training now. “They’re going down to Dunedin today, doing a bit of training with Dunedin council down there.” Once the trucks arrived in Ashburton the drivers would be able to familiarise themselves with driving on Ashburton streets. Residents are being reminded that although they may spot the vehicles making their way around town, they should stick to their old bag service until September 1. “We’ve been anticipating this new service for months, and now the launch date is in sight,” Goodwin said.

Decile system to be dumped By Katie todd

Ashburton school principals had mixed reactions to a press release from the Government on Monday morning advising them the decile system would be replaced. A new risk index will replace the current decile system under changes announced by Education Minister Nikki Kaye, and likely to take effect around 2019/20. The new system will be anonymous and likely rank students on their estimated risk of not passing NCEA Level 2, based on 16 indicators. The indicators are yet to be confirmed but may include beneficiary status, ethnicity, family income and age of the mother when the child was born. It is hoped that the new system will remove stigma experienced by lower-decile schools and help the Government to provide “fairer funding”. Principals have been advised that no school would lose funding under the proposed changes. Longbeach School principal Neil Simons said that he felt the decile system had resulted in some community issues, such as schools becoming “unfairly labelled”. “People were rightly or wrongly using the decile system to judge a school rather than going and getting a feel for the school, reading ERO reports, speaking to teachers on the ground.” He said the decile system was a blunt tool which worked somewhat, but was not an accurate indicator of the school’s teaching. Though Simons described the replacement proposed as “looking good on paper”, he thought it could be somewhat tricky to manage, particularly regarding confidentiality and what would occur in the instance of a child moving schools. Methven School principal Chris Murphy also thought the changes would be a beneficial move away from the “blunt tool” of the decile system, though he felt many parents were largely oblivious to school trusts and boards and funding procedures under the old system. “I presume there will be a level
In brief Water back to normal Ashburton District Council has lifted the remaining precautionary boil water notices that were in place for the Methven-Springfield and Montalto water supplies, after test results yesterday show the water quality has returned to normal. High turbidity, or cloudiness, had been detected in the water supplies since July 21, which triggered council to issue the precautionary notices for the schemes. Tests yesterday show the water in both schemes is now as it should be. Montalto and MethvenSpringfield were the last remaining water supplies on a precautionary boil water notice, after council removed the notices for Methven and Mt Somers.
Another death Police suspect synthetic cannabis caused the death of a middle-aged man in central Auckland last week, bringing the July death toll to 10. The body of the 47-year-old man was discovered in a central city hostel on July 28. of optimism as the changes take place,” he said. “While the devil is in the detail, I think schools will continue to work with the ministry to iron it out and make it work for both of us.” Netherby School principal Phil Wheeler said it was hard to determine whether the new system would be an improvement or not, particularly without knowing the indicators. “The current decile system is quite useful, in that it gives us a sum of money, gives us autonomy in allocating resources.” Although he said there was the risk of stigma attatched to the decile system, he had not experi-
enced it in any explicit forms as a decile three ranking school, and said there “could still be stigma” in new forms with the new system. He also said he had read critical commentary around the funding proposals, and was “not sure” if the promised maintenance of current funding levels would continue further down the track. And Hampstead School principal Peter Melrose said “in some ways, the new system would be no change at all”. Despite receiving a relatively low decile ranking of four, he felt that Hampstead had not received any stigma from potential parents.
“I think the community has already moved past any bias caused by deciles,” he said. Melrose said that all schools in Ashburton were working hard for their pupils and people tended to select their schools in Ashburton not so much by decile but by geographic proximity. The current decile system ranks schools from one to 10 based on the socio-economic background of their community. Parents of children at higher decile schools are often asked to contribute more by way of fees, time and donations. Ashburton’s 24 schools currently range from decile 3 to decile 9.

Flowers skip winter While most of Christchurch is feeling the chill of winter, it seems the flowers have skipped it all together. The flowers seem to think it’s spring and are at least a month ahead of their normal pattern. A crash between a van and a ute in Christchurch has claimed the life of one person. Murray and Bev Meadows enjoy being grey nomads. Their motorhome Senior Moments has clocked up 200,000km and is good for a few more road trips. The Ashburton couple has seen a lot of New Zealand, from Cape Reinga to Stewart Island, from the driving seat and made thousands of friends. Their motorhome club has around 80,000 members, with the average age dropping from people in their 60s to people in their 50s over the past few years. Murray Meadows said mobile homes were an increasingly attractive holiday option for Kiwis who wanted to explore the country at their own pace. Meadows knows Kiwis love their mobile homes – he has organised one of the biggest motorhome extravangzas in New Zealand for the past 14 years. Ashburton, the third weekend in February, has become a big
date on the calendar of those wanting to sell and buy. But Meadows and his wife Bev are handing over the running of the 15th show to the Lions Club of Ashburton. Meadows said his health wasn’t as good as it had been and they had decided the time was right to move on. “But we’ll miss it.” He said buyers and vendors came from all over the country hoping to buy a mobile home. Vehicles on offer frequently ranged in value from $200,000 to $1 million. “People come because they want to buy and for many it will be the second biggest investment of their lives.” Lions club president Garth Bateup said the club had noted after the 2017 show that the Meadows wanted to hand over the reins; Lions members have helped at the gates of previous events and were keen to take charge. “We know a little bit about it.
It is a popular event and quite unique. “It is one of only a few in New Zealand and the only one in the South Island, where people can bring their own vans along to sell.” He said there were over 200 private vans for sale at the 2017 show, as well as dealers and trade displays. Bateup said the trade sites were a possible area of expansion, but the club would be sticking to the tried and proven successful format of the past for the 2018 extravaganza. The show will be held on February 17 and 18 next year at the Ashburton showgrounds and the Meadows will be there to ensure a smooth transition of the organisation. Bateup said Lions members would begin planning for the 2018 edition soon and money raised from the venture would be distributed to worthy causes in the community.

Water treatment failure discovered after 13 hours BY SUSAN SANDYS

It was over 13 hours before a serious equipment failure was discovered at the Methven water supply last month, an Ashburton District Council report reveals. Councillors, who received the report at their service delivery committee meeting last week, heard not only about the failure of the equipment and the time it took to be discovered, but also about concern over the timing and quality of a boil water notice following the failure. The report detailed that an uninterruptable power supply (UPS) unit failed at the treatment plant around 7.15pm on June 29. This appeared to have resulted in loss of power to the two treatment facilities of an ultraviolet unit and chlorine dosing pump. It also affected control instrumentation, and an actuated valve controlling flow to the reservoir did not close, so partially treated water entered. “Due to the configuration of some key alarms, no events were signalled through the telemetry system,” the report said. The plant operator arrived on site at 8.40am the next day for a routine visit, and identified the issue and manually closed the inlet valve to isolate the reservoir. “A chlorine residual was confirmed present in the reservoir but it was lower than required so the reservoir was manually dosed to increase the chlorine residual.” Council officers, in discussions with Community and Public Health, undertook sampling to test for E.coli and chlorine levels. The first round indicated that a chlorine residual had almost been fully restored in the outer limits of the reticulation. The second round completed late afternoon showed that the chlorine residual was decreasing. The reticulation was flushed and by late Friday chlorine levels had been fully restored. The council issued a precautionary boil water notice about 6.30pm, and in the report listed the channels used – the
council’s Facebook page, local radio stations, Ashburton Guardian and Methven Community Board members. Officers checked council’s dialysis patient list and confirmed there were none in Methven. Officers had reviewed events surrounding the incident and taken steps to prevent it happening again. This included replacing the UPS, endto-end testing of key alarms, sourcing an alternative actuator valve with independent backup power supply, and reviewing similar treatment plants in the district. They also were consulting with Selwyn District Council on how it issued boil water notices and developing a standard operating procedure. Assets manager Andrew Guthrie spoke to the report and councillors discussed it, mainly focusing on communication channels for boil water notices. Councillor Liz McMillan said an electronic message alert system, similar to that run by a local school, could be valuable. People signed up and would be alerted quickly. Councillor Neil Brown asked why the back-up generator did not work to which Guthrie said it had potentially been a power surge which caused the issue, and power had not been lost to the site, but to key equipment.

Leadership shuffle a political triumph or a total flop? Matt Markham

I
t will either become regarded as a political masterstroke, a slice of genius that is so farfetched and separated from the normal, or it will go down as one of the greatest ever flops in New Zealand’s political history. But no matter what the outcome of yesterday’s turmoilturned-jubilation from within the Labour Party, the best part of it all is that we, the general public of New Zealand, get to dictate which direction the story is going to take next. No one should have been too surprised at what came out of the Labour corner yesterday. They’ve been a bit of sinking ship for quite some time now and their recent run of poor poll results give plenty of credence to that. Not all of that sits firmly on the shoulders of Andrew Little, but a lot of it does, so while it was admirable to see him fall on his sword yesterday morning, he really had no other choice. The elevation of Jacinda Ardern could be the one move Labour have made in the past few years that can turn things around. All of a sudden, the Labour party is now being run by a confident, sophisticated and articulate person who has New Zealand at her heart and has, in the past, shown genuine emotion and meaning when speaking of our country. The only issue is whether it is too little, too late. Twelve months ago, this change-of-face would have been enough to potentially turn things around for Labour, but with just over six weeks remaining before the September 23 election – one has to wonder whether the horse has already bolted. And so, it will be interesting to see how Labour now change tact and what different things they may bring to the table. They’ll need a new advertising campaign, some new policies – actually, they might as well throw everything out of the window of their beehive offices and start again there’s that much ground to be made up. But under Ardern, they may just have the chance to pull it all together and make this election campaign at least seem a lot closer than the one-party race we expected just a few days ago.

t’s been a wet and wild couple of weeks in Ashburton but I’m pleased to say that the district coped well with the recent deluge. From early morning Friday, July 21, through to the evening of Saturday, July 22, the Ashburton District received about 160 millimetres of rain. In the first 24 hours, there was 116mm, which almost doubled the previous 24-hour rainfall record. Many roads were flooded and damaged in the area but Fulton Hogan was quick to begin repairing them. Because of the storm damage, major work is now required on Ocean View Road

and the council is looking at what needs to be done. As a council, we decided not to declare a state of emergency because we were well prepared and had strong infrastructure in place. The event was also well forecasted and we had a great response team ready. Many council staff and contractors worked around the clock to
manage stormwater issues and blocked drains. Several boil water notices were also issued and I’m glad residents were able to receive and adhere to these quickly. My thoughts were with the farming community who were put to the test in extremely difficult conditions. I want to thank our residents for looking out for each other and staying off the roads and away from flooded areas. It was great to see neighbours helping one another, particularly at properties where floodwaters made their way inside. Climate change means the number of natural events that afflict our community will con-
tinue to increase. Like other parts of New Zealand, the Ashburton District is prone to disasters like flooding, so it’s important people are aware of what to do and how to stay prepared. Little falls on sword; Ardern steps into breach

o Andrew Little is now the latest in a lengthening line of Labour leaders who, as it were, have failed to get past “Go” and enter the Beehive as Prime Minister. Earnest, committed, a Union man through and through, well-meaning and sincere, in the end, the polls beat him. Twenty-four per cent at this stage in the election process simply doesn’t cut it. The situation called for immediate change and, in the shape of the telegenic duo Jacinda Ardern and Kelvin Davis, it has come. Not only are they a telegenic couple, certain to raise the Labour poll figures to 30 per cent and beyond in the next few weeks – such is human nature’s response to

physical attraction – they are also formidable politicians, likely to boost Labour’s fortunes off screen as well as on it. It seems to me both Messrs English and Peters will have found little to enjoy about yesterday’s major development in the Labour campaign. The New Zealand First roller-coaster seems likely to have lost at least a wheel or two and now not be running as smoothly as it was this time yesterday, while Na-
tional’s stately – some say, complacent – assumed return to the Treasury benches has received at least a jolt. Can Jacinda now become New Zealand’s Labour answer to her British equivalent, Jeremy Corbyn, and a very much more attractive one at that? “Not out of the question”, would be my reply. The Greens, too, are likely to feel the downdraft from yesterday’s ructions. Riding high in the polls on the back of a probable exodus of Labour people looking desperately for a political bolt-hole, those Labour escapees may now turn about and return to the fold as abruptly as they left it, to be welcomed with “open arms” (what else?) by the smiling Jacinda and Kelvin.
Then the Green numbers subside, while the Labour climb. Winston, as well, is likely at this very “moment in time” to be re-doing his sums in terms of to whom best to offer his support should the call for his coalition collaboration become crucial. What a scenario! Mr Paddy Gower and his team-mates must surely be finding it hard to believe their luck. A political “super-quake” at this late stage in the proceedings must really be “dream come true” for a teevee political pundit. Why, even I am finding it hard to curb my excitement – and I can’t remember when that last happened. So, don’t forget the date, August 1, 2017, the day the election game was transformed!

Kelly in; Scaramucci out It didn’t take long for President Donald Trump’s new chief of staff to take charge in an unruly White House: Just hours after he was sworn in, former General John Kelly made sure that Trump’s profanity-spouting new communications director was gone, ignominiously ousted after less than two weeks on the job. It was the latest head-snapping sequence of events at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave, but Trump dismissed any talk of disarray. He insisted in a morning tweet there was “No WH chaos”, then followed up in the evening with a satisfied “great day at the White House”. Aiming to instil some discipline in the White House, Kelly showed Anthony Scaramucci the door just days after the new communications director had unleashed an expletivelaced tirade against senior staff members that included vulgar broadsides at then-chief of staff Reince Priebus. In short order, Priebus was pushed aside and replaced by Kelly, whose arrival led in turn to Scaramucci’s departure. The communication director’s tenure was the stuff of Shakespearian drama – though brief enough to be just a morbid sonnet.
J.K. Rowling apologises J.K. Rowling has taken to Twitter to apologise over her false claims that Donald Trump refused to shake a disabled boy’s hand. In a series of tweets, the author lambasted the President for what she said was “looking deliberately over a disabled child’s head, ignoring his outstretched hand”. However, footage shows that he did shake the child’s hand, and the clip J.K. Rowling tweeted simply showed the boy waving his secret service patch. Yesterday on Twitter, she explained how she was wrong and apologised to the boy and his family. Earlier, J.K. Rowling was criticised by the mother of the disabled child. George Clooney’s foundation is planning to open seven public schools for Syrian refugee children. The Clooney Foundation for Justice announced a new partnership with Google, HP and UNICEF to provide education for more than 3000 refugee children in Lebanon. George and Amal Clooney said the foundation’s commitment of more than $2 million toward education for Syrian refugees aims to prevent thousands of young people from becoming “a lost generation”. “They have been victims of geography and circumstance, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t hope,” the couple said. “Our goal is to help provide Syrian refugee children with an education and put them on a path to be the future leaders their generation desperately needs.”

Harmoney halves annual loss By Paul MCBetH Harmoney Corp, the country’s biggest peer-to-peer lending platform, more than halved its annual loss as revenue climbed 63 per cent in its second full year of operation, and has since crossed $500 million lent through the portal. The Auckland-based company posted a loss of $6.5 million in the 12 months ended March from $14.2 million a year earlier, its financial statements lodged with the Companies Office show. Revenue climbed to $14 million from $8.6 million a year earlier, while its biggest expenditure item – marketing – dropped 14 per cent to $7 million and staff costs were flat at $6.3 million. The big revenue gains were from note fees charged to wholesale lenders, which soared to $3.6
million from $491,000 a year earlier, while service and lender fees almost tripled to $2.6 million. Platform fees charged for arranging loans through the platform dropped to $5.4 million from $6.3 million. Harmoney facilitated $216 million of loans in the 2017 financial year, up from $178 million a year earlier, and crossed the $500 million mark in June. “Economies of scale in a lowmargin business and improvement in our unit economics have enabled us to drive strong revenue growth in readiness for our third full year of operation,” chief financial officer Simon Ward said in a statement. “While a net loss has been registered, this has more than halved on last year, a significant outcome for a fintech company still in start-up phase in a new
industry,” he said. Harmoney got a head-start as the first mover in the market, but is facing increased competition from the arrival of other licensed P2P lenders Squirrel Money, LendMe, Lending Crowd and PledgeMe, which also operates a crowdfunding platform. Its operational cash outflow shrank to $4.5 million in the year from $13 million a year earlier, and $4.7 million of money raised from share issues left it with $8.2 million as at March 31. The P2P lender said it broke even in the fourth quarter of the financial year, and while joint chief executive and biggest shareholder Neil Roberts said it was important to generate a positive cash flow in 2017, the firm was focused on building “a world-class team” and build “innovative new products”. – NZME

Investors will be keeping a close eye on the next opinion polls after news that Jacinda Ardern has replaced Andrew Little as the new leader of the opposition Labour Party. Earlier yesterday, Little announced he was stepping down after the latest poll results ahead of the September 23 election. “As leader, I must take responsibility for these results. I do take responsibility and believe that Labour must have an opportunity to perform better under new leadership through to the
election,” he said. The two most influential political polls were published Sunday and Monday and both showed support for the Labour Party falling to 24 per cent, 1 percentage point below its 2014 election party vote. The Newshub-Reid Research poll broadcast Monday evening, showed National down 2.2 points at 45 per cent, while the TVNZ Colmar-Brunton poll broadcast Sunday evening showed National steady at 47 per cent. The election is expected to be tight and while National is ahead, it may have to rely on opposition New Zealand First, led

If no new listings come on to the market – many areas around the country could sell out in a matter of weeks. The statement has come from one of the country’s largest property websites after July saw a “record fall” in new listings on realestate.co.nz The latest statistics from realestate.co.nz indicated based on historical sales trends, stock in the capital would sell out in a mere six weeks. Wellington had just 899 properties available for sale and in July saw just 582 new listings, 12.5 per cent less compared to the same period in 2016. And if no new houses are listed for the country’s largest city, in a mere five months Auckland’s property stock would “sell out” in 23 weeks. In Auckland new listings this July had dropped 13.9 per cent to 2703, compared to July 2016. The total number of residential properties available for sale in the city was 8019 in July. Realestate.co.nz spokeswoman Vanessa Taylor said the 7933 new

Northland followed with a 5.6 per cent rise to $557,564, Marlborough was up 5.4 per cent to $485,460 and the Central North Island up 5.1 per cent to $461,910. At the other end of the scale, the largest falls in asking price for July compared to June were in Otago, down 7.9 per cent, to $351,729 and the Wairarapa down 7 per cent to $400,208. – NZME

Bringing back the cob loaf dip I
■ Preheat oven to 130°C. ■ Cut a lid off the cob loaf and hollow out the loaf, keeping the bread you remove. ■ Defrost spinach and drain any excess water that may come out. ■ Heat cream cheese slightly in the microwave – 30 seconds should be enough. ■ Chop bacon into pieces and lightly fry in a pan. ■ In a large bowl combine all ingredients and mix well. ■ Pour all of this mixture into the hollowed out loaf and replace the lid. ■ Wrap the entire loaf in foil and place in the oven for 1 hour. ■ Break up the bread you removed in the middle into finger sized pieces. ■ Grill till golden brown and use as scoops for the spinach dip mixture.
Cheese and bacon cob loaf 1 round cob loaf 125g grated tasty cheese 3-4 bacon rashers, chopped 1 chopped red onion 2 or 3 shallots, chopped 1/2 red capsicum, diced 250g sour cream 440g tin creamed corn 310g tin corn kernels 1/2 t cayenne pepper Salt and pepper to taste ■ Fry the bacon and onion in a pan with a little oil or butter until soft. Add the shallots and let them heat through. Remove from heat. ■ Combine remaining ingredients. ■ Slice the top off the cob loaf and pull the bread out of the middle. ■ Fill the hollowed out cob with the dip and bake for about 30mins in a moderate oven. ■ Chop the removed bread and toast in the oven to serve with dip.
■ Bake for 15-20 minutes until bread is golden brown.

t might be an old concept and it’s certainly one that’s been around before, but the cob loaf is doing another round as a centrepiece on a nibbles tray. They’re easy to make – take a cob loaf, remove most of the bread from its centre and fill the space with whatever takes your fancy as a dip. Serve it hot and stand back and watch it disappear. It’s the ultimate food, one that is useful as a container but it’s one you don’t need to wash, simply break it into bits and eat it.
Mexican cob loaf
1T chopped parsley 1 tomato, diced 1T butter 2T gravy powder 1 1/4 C water 1/3 C tomato sauce 1C grated tasty cheese ■ Cut 2cm in from top of loaf all round, remove top and hollow out loaf, crumb the bread. ■ Melt butter, fry onion till soft. ■ Add mince and fry until meat is browned and cooked. ■ Add gravy powder, water, crumbled stock cube and tomato sauce. ■ Stir over low heat until thickened, turn off heat and stir in
parsley and breadcrumbs. ■ Place layer of cheese in case, then layer of tomato, then fill with the meat mixture. Replace lid. ■ Wrap in foil, place on baking tray. ■ Bake in moderate oven 180°C and bake for 35 minutes. Slice and serve.
Spinach and chilli cob loaf
1 cob loaf 6T tomato salsa 1/2 C cheese, grated 300ml sour cream 1 packet taco seasoning ■ Preheat oven to 180°C. ■ Place sour cream in a bowl and mix in taco seasoning. ■ Cut the top off cob loaf and remove the bread centre. ■ Spoon half of the sour cream mix on the bottom of cob. ■ Spread 2-3T salsa and 1/4 C grated cheese. ■ Spoon remainder of sour cream mix, then salsa, then top with cheese. ■ Place cob on oven tray. ■ Break bread centre into small bite size pieces and place around cob, put cob lid on.
Caramelised onion and spinach loaf 1T olive oil 2 large brown onions, halved, thinly sliced 2T brown sugar 1T balsamic vinegar 1 garlic clove, crushed 2 bunches English spinach, trimmed, roughly chopped 1 large 20cm sourdough cob loaf 250g cream cheese, softened 300g tub sour cream 1/2 C grated cheddar cheese 2T chopped fresh basil leaves ■ Heat oil in a large frying pan over medium-low heat. ■ Add onion. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 10 minutes or until softened. ■ Add sugar and vinegar. Cook, stirring, for 3 to 5 minutes or until golden and caramelised. ■ Add garlic and spinach. ■ Cook, stirring occasionally, for 3 to 5 minutes or until spinach is just wilted. Set aside to cool. ■ Preheat oven to 180°C. ■ Cut a 3cm-thick slice off top of loaf. ■ Set aside. Remove bread from centre of loaf to form a bowl. Cut bread into large cubes. ■ Place cream cheese and sour cream in a large bowl. ■ Stir until smooth. ■ Add cooled onion mixture, cheddar cheese and basil. ■ Season with salt and pepper. ■ Spoon into loaf. Replace lid. ■ Place on a large baking tray with bread cubes. ■ Bake for 15 to 20 minutes or until filling is warm. ■ Cover loosely with foil if bread is over-browning during cooking Serve warm.

The best spaghetti and meatballs Serves 4-5 Meatballs 500g Quality Mark beef mince 1/2 C breadcrumbs 1/2 C onion, finely chopped 3 cloves garlic, crushed 1 egg, lightly beaten 2T parsley, finely chopped 1T fresh thyme leaves, finely chopped 2T tomato paste 1T olive oil Sauce 3/4 C red wine (or use stock) 1 1/2 C Campbell’s Real Stock – Beef 1/2 C tomato paste 400g can chopped tomatoes in juice 1T dried oregano 1T balsamic vinegar 2t brown sugar To serve Cooked spaghetti Fresh basil Grated cheese ■ Meatballs: Add the mince to a large bowl with the breadcrumbs, onion, garlic, egg, herbs, tomato paste, olive oil and season. Mix gently to combine using clean hands. Shape the mixture into balls slightly bigger than a golf ball. Cover and refrigerate for 20 minutes to set. ■ Heat a little oil over a medium-high heat in a large frying pan and brown the meatballs all over (do this in
batches). Once browned, remove carefully with tongs and set aside on a plate. ■ Sauce: Drain any oil from the pan and return it over a high heat. Add the wine (or stock) and let it bubble for 30 seconds, scraping the pan with a wooden spoon to incorporate all those crunchy caramelised meat juices from the meatballs. Add the tomato paste, tomatoes, oregano, balsamic vinegar and sugar. Stir. Add the meatballs back to the pan and simmer uncovered for 15-20 minutes, or until the sauce has thickened to a pasta sauce consistency (turn the meatballs over once). Taste and season as required. ■ To serve: Toss the sauce through the just-cooked drained spaghetti in the spaghetti cooking pot. Add to serving bowls and sprinkle with cheese and basil.

Three years after first pulling on the green and gold, Jackson Donlan will be leading the Mid Canterbury Hammers from the front this season as captain for the upcoming Heartland season, including the Ranfurly Shield challenge on Friday. Donlan made his first appearance for the Hammers in the annual pre-season match against Ellesmere in 2013, but was forced to the sidelines for a year after breaking his leg playing for Rakaia against Southern. Donlan returned in 2014, making his substitute debut against Thames Valley, before his starting debut the next week against Wanganui. Donlan has had one crack at the shield in the past when playing against the Hawke’s Bay side in 2015. “Against the Hawke’s Bay it was really good, taking that step up to the next level,” he said. “The intensity is a lot greater, but once you settle in to it, it is really enjoyable to play. “It (the Ranfurly Shield) was always an inspira-
tion when I was growing up so it is pretty cool to be able to play for it.” Donlan said there is definitely a buzz amongst the Mid Canterbury squad ahead of the clash against holders Canterbury on Friday. “The guys are pretty rapt to be getting the opportunity to be playing for it,” he said. “The hit-out against Southland showed us how fast it is at that level and what we are trying to match.” Donlan said the main goal for the season is to win the Meads Cup, and that winning the Ranfurly Shield on top of that would be a massive bonus. “It would be pretty epic if we did win. “For all the old boys it would be massive and would be pretty exciting, though we are not getting ahead of ourselves,” he said. “By the sounds of it the community is really starting to get excited and get behind the game which is pretty cool.”

Auckland rugby legend Maurice Trapp could be considered a master of the Ranfurly Shield, having won all of the 38 shield challenges he coached. His near-invicible side brought the shield on their travels through the South Island, stopping off to play Mid Canterbury. While Trapp’s memory of the game has not fared well, he was more than happy to tell the Guardian about what the shield challenges meant. “Shield rugby was big as a play-
er but it was huge as a coach. “You spent the entire time thinking ‘we dare not lose this’,” he said. “At a lower level it was great to see the anticipation, in the smaller towns it was just about the occasion as much as anything.” Trapp began coaching Auckland in 1987, and said they decided to take the shield on tour in 1989 to give themselves a better chance at breaking the record of consecutive defences. “We started off down in the King Country and made our way up,” he said. “It was really muddy down

Sanzaar defends call Governing body SANZAAR has defended its decision to appoint South African referee Jaco Peyper to control the Super Rugby final. The move came despite Kiwi media calls to appoint a “neutral” referee – probably Angus Gardner – to handle the match. Announcing Peyper’s appointment, Sanzaar CEO Andy Marinos addressed the issue, saying he was the best referee and it followed policy of the past two years that such appointments be “merit-based”. “Sanzaar stands behind the policy and believes the best referees should be available to officiate the best matches,” said Marinos. - NZME

South African Jaco Peyper will take charge of the Lions v Crusaders Super Rugby final, with two of his countrymen getting key roles as his assistants. It’s news that will not comfort Crusaders supporters, who are hoping their side can overturn the odds to win at Ellis Park. Peyper made several key decisions which went the Lions’ way in their semi-final victory over the Hurricanes, and many will see his appointment in officiating the Johannesburgbased team two weeks in a row as odd. New Zealander Glen Jackson is one of Peyper’s assistants, with Marius van der Westerhuizen the other and Marius Jonker the television match official. - NZME

The 25-Test Kerr-Barlow was visibly emotional after the match, and said he was disappointed to leave the franchise without a third Super Rugby triumph. Alcock, Cubellie leave Brumbies openside flanker Chris Alcock and Argentine halfback Tomas Cubelli are leaving the Super Rugby side, both heading overseas. Alcock, one the Brumbies’ best forwards this season, has signed with Japanese club Kamaishi Seawaves. Argentina test halfback Cubelli will return to South America to play for the Buenos Aires-based Jaguares in Super Rugby. Australia’s second-rowers have acknowledged the need to assert themselves against New Zealand in the upcoming Bledisloe Cup tests. The formidable duo of Brodie Retallick and Sam Whitelock has been one of the strengths of the world champions’ forward machine in recent years and are both used to winning against the Wallabies. Whitelock has tasted defeat against just three times and Retallick once. Wallabies’ lock Rory Arnold acknowledged getting an edge over the duo was key for his team. “They’ve been world class locks now for a number of years, so if we want to dominate up front we know we’ve got to go at those blokes,” said Arnold. “We’re going to have to be playing at our absolute best.” - NZME

Time for backs to shine By Liam Napier So much of the focus around the Crusaders naturally falls on their exceptional pack. This week, their quest for an unprecedented eighth title could well be decided by the performance of the backline, or more specifically their ability to match the Lions attack. Christchurch to Johannesburg presents many challenges. Travelling over the Indian Ocean; playing 1800 metres above sea level where fatigue zaps legs and compresses lungs just a few. After spending the past two weeks in Christchurch, where a state of emergency and icy cold temperatures created conditions tailor-made for their forwards, the Crusaders now face a complete contrast; confronting a team in the Lions who have forged their success on a hard, fast dry track in the afternoon sun. No doubt Super Rugby’s conference format and draw gave the Lions a serious advantage by allowing them to avoid Kiwi teams until last week’s semifinal against the Hurricanes. Thus, granting a much easier route to a home final. Last week, the Lions also appeared to benefit from a couple of dubious calls. But their recent record against Kiwi teams in playoff matches at Ellis Park tells us two things: the Lions are a formidable side on home soil, even more so in front of a 63,000 sellout crowd,
and the Crusaders may need to score in excess of 40 points to claim the crown. In their last three home playoff games against New Zealand opposition, the Lions have scored 42 points (Crusaders, quarter-final, 2016), 42 points (Highlanders, semi-final, 2016) and 44 points (Hurricanes, semi-final, last week). What’s more, Johan Ackermann’s men hammered the Blues 43-5 at Ellis Park last year and averaged 47 points across the board at home this season. They love to use the ball, love to play at pace, and as the Hurricanes discovered last week, never stop coming. The Crusaders’ defence laid the foundations for last week’s convincing semifinal victory over the Chiefs. After making 117 more tackles than the Chiefs, there may be questions about how much they have left in the tank, but the Crusaders will back that same resilience to restrict the Lions ability to quickly clock up scoreboard pressure. Clearly, though, the Crusaders attack also needs to fire. From the outside looking in, Leon MacDonald has made a huge difference in this area. The Crusaders attack has evolved from largely throwing the ball to Nemani Nadolo and hoping he would break the line to being innovative with crossfield kicks and creative with backline moves to exploit space on the outside. Seven times this season the Crusaders have amassed more than 40 points,
with their biggest victory coming up the highway from Johannesburg, when they put 62 on the Bulls in Pretoria. Good omen, perhaps. As always the onus will be put on the experienced All Blacks to lay the platform up-front, to target set-piece supremacy and control the pace before the bench is unleashed to counter altitude. But the backline will be called upon much more than they were in the past two weeks. Against the Highlanders in particular, with conditions especially dire in the quarter-final, some of the Crusaders backs barely touched the ball. This week the spark must come from Richie Mo’unga. In the biggest match of his budding career, much rests on his shoulders to lead the same clinical finishing that was so evident against the Chiefs. Outside him the Crusaders possess genuine weapons in Jack Goodhue, Seta Tamanivalu, Israel Dagg and David Havili, with Ryan Crotty holding it all together. Collectively, this is their time to show just how far the Crusaders have come. From the bizarre appointment of South African referee Jaco Peyper to the taxing travel, rabid crowd and unfair format, everything appears stacked against the Crusaders. This is, however, the only team in Super Rugby history to win a final away from home. All the more reason to attack.- NZME

Time against SVG Reigning Supercars champion Shane van Gisbergen knows he is fast running out of time to catch fellow Kiwi Scott McLaughlin to defend his crown. The Red Bull Holden Racing star collected two third-place finishes at the weekend’s round at Queensland Raceway but still finished behind McLaughlin both days. The 28-year-old van Gisbergen now trails the DJR Team Penske driver by 261 points in the standings. “We had two awesome races and came third,” van Gisbergen said of his solid weekend. “Our pace wasn’t quite able to win but we finished on the podium both days so we should be pretty happy with it.” The reality now is that van Gisbergen is almost relying on McLaughlin to have a bad result at one of the three upcoming endurance rounds, where 300 points are up for grabs for just one race at Sandown and Bathurst. While there is still time for van Gisbergen to turn it around he would need to be as dominant as McLaughlin has been in the first half of the season and that seems unlikely. “He finished in front of us both days,” van Gisbergen said. “His car is fast, his team is good and he’s obviously driving it
Ricciardo moves on Daniel Ricciardo says his anger over Red Bull teammate Max Verstappen’s part in their crash at the Hungarian Grand Prix has been dealt with. Australian Formula One star Ricciardo’s bid for a fourth straight podium finish at Hungaroring was over when Verstappen hit him on the first lap. Ricciardo blasted the 19-year-old a “f****ng sore loser”, but the pair’s relationship appeared to have been smoothed over by yesterday. - AAP

Historic hat-trick finishes off Proteas England spinner Moeen Ali bowled a hat-trick yesterday to clean up the South African tail in the third test match. Ali’s dismissal of South Africa’s last three batsmen in three balls across two overs handed England a 239-run victory and a 2-1 series lead ahead of Friday’s fourth and final test in Manchester. The England players celebrated after the last decision was confirmed by the umpire. Ali is the first England spinner to take a hat-trick since 1938. The off-spinner’s hat-trick started when Dean Elgar’s resistance was finally ended for 136. Elgar edged the ball to Ben Stokes at slip, and Kagiso Rabada was out to an identical shot on the next delivery. At the start of his next over, Ali trapped Morne Morkel leg before wicket to complete England’s convincing victory. Elgar was the only South African holding up England’s victory as he batted despite an injured left hand. Staying mare in good form Brian McKeagg enjoys a good strike rate on his home track and further success could be in store for his stable today. The Tauranga trainer will be represented by the in-form mare Brookbars, who will bid for consecutive wins when she lines up in the Capital Tractors 2100. The four-year-old gained an overdue maiden victory at Matamata last week and her progress since has convinced McKeagg to strike while the iron is hot. Champion apprentice Sam Weatherley has been booked. “She should have won before then and I expected her to a few times, but it didn’t work out,” he said. “I think she can make the next step. I don’t normally back them up a week later, but it’s her home track and she’s just thrived. “I’m really pleased with her and she’s still quite immature-looking so she will continue to develop with more time.” McKeagg, who has won 16 races at Tauranga, contents himself with a smallish team and sent out a career best nine winners in the 2016-17 season. Three of those came from the lightly-raced Per Incanto five-yearold Cantare. “He’s had a little chip taken off his knee,” he said. “He was never lame, but sometimes when he went right-handed he wouldn’t hit out as well as he did left-handed. “There was a slight fracture on one of the smaller knee bones so that’s been tidied up and he’ll be back in work in another month.” - NZME

Perfect return from mare Perfect Fit kicked off another Group One preparation in style at the Te Teko trials yesterday when she won her 820m heat. “She’s pulled up well and had a good blow out and she’s going to improve,” said Ken Kelso, who trains with his wife Bev. “She’ll go to the Foxbridge Plate and then on to the Tarzino Trophy. The Ashburton Squash Club has wrapped up another successful Ashburton Open over the weekend. A strong field of 64 took part,
made up of 48 men and 16 women. Tournament director Alastair White said it was a really good turnout, and one of the strongest ever men’s draws in terms of quality. Both of the top draws were
taken out by juniors who had made the trip to Ashburton from Oamaru. 17-year-old Keidah Bungard took down Ashburton’s Lee Barker in the men’s final, while Lily Rae came from 2-0 down to defeat Aleisha Stoddart 3-2.
“It was good to see all the juniors coming through and taking part,” said White. “People from Oamaru, Timaru and a few from Christchurch took part, as well as some returning players who have moved away.”
Parramatta’s shock NRL premiership push has received an enormous boost with injured duo Beau Scott and Kaysa Pritchard a chance of returning for the finals. Boyle retires from the pool as one of our greats By DaviD Leggat Lauren Boyle has chosen a smart time to walk away from swimming. Her place at New Zealand swimming’s top table is secure. Indeed, should seating arrangements be needed, Boyle would be at the right hand side of the greatest, double Olympic gold medallist Danyon Loader, in terms of achievement. Sure there was no Olympic medal – Jean Stewart remains the only New Zealand woman to achieve that, with her backstroke bronze in Helsinki in 1952 – but even so numbers talk when assessing the Auckland freestyler’s time at the top. Fourteen medals at the major meets; five world championship medals – the most by a New Zealander – a Commonwealth Games gold in Glasgow three years ago, a world short course record; all speak of an athlete fit to sit among the best of her time around the globe. An abiding personal memory of Boyle, though, comes not from the pool but beside it, at the London Olympics in 2012. Boyle had already made the 400m freestyle final, finishing in eighth spot.
Four days later she lined up in the 800m final and flew through for fourth, in an Oceania record time of 8min 22.72s. More significantly in one of the most gruelling disciplines she was just 2.4s off bronze. Coming through the mixed zone afterwards, she was alone. New Zealand’s Olympic media team should have given themselves an uppercut. At a time of high emotion, they hadn’t bothered to send one of their staff to shepherd her through the throng and back to the changing rooms. All around the crush of media were gathered in front of the three medallists. Translation: they hadn’t expected her to shake the medal territory. Boyle found two New Zealand journalists further down the concourse. The standard ‘how did that feel’ opening question produce a mumbled few words before Boyle dissolved in tears. She talked about the struggles to get that far and the emotions took over. Imagine if she had gone just a tick or two faster. How would she have coped before a jostling throng of international journalists?
Lauren Boyle The Rio Olympics last year were shaping as Boyle’s time. American teenager Katie Ledecky remains the undisputed women’s champion of the pool, but Boyle would have been a big chance to medal. A lingering hip injury in the lead-up did for her, she was well below her best. A highly intelligent woman, with a degree in business from the Haas School of Business at the University of California Berkeley, at 29, the time is right to move on with the rest of her life. At Berkeley, Boyle came under the guidance of noted American coach Terri McKeever.
From her, she admitted she learnt plenty about personal growth, became “a more confident person, in a way where (you learn that) you don’t have to be good at only one thing”. In an interview with the Herald, Boyle talked of her love of swimming. “Lots of days I love swimming so much and don’t want to stop. “I get to go to so many amazing places ... and keep really fit for my job. “I am so lucky to live this life.” And she described her biggest buzz as the simple business of making improvements – simple when you say it, anyway. “That’s what I strive for and the best feeling I can get from the sport, that I’ve changed something or grown in some way to improve my performance to a level it’s never been before.” Boyle’s has undoubtedly been a career of outstanding achievement. Great? No. That requires victory on the toughest stages. But as she put it yesterday, with a huge dollop of understatement, her record is ‘’Not too bad for a girl from Auckland”. Amen to that. - NZME

The All Blacks, minus the Crusaders contingent, head into training camp tomorrow and it will be worthwhile keeping an eye on who is invited as previous get-togethers have thrown out big clues about who the selectors are considering for future selection. This year there is particular relevance as with two games and three tests in November, the All Blacks intend to take 37 players with them to Europe and have a proper look at a handful of emerging players. Presumably the coaches will take the opportunity to bring some of those players on the far range of their radar into camp so they can start the process of embedding them into the systems and game plans. Also, given the intense nature of the Rugby Championship, the All Blacks will end up having to call in reinforcements from outside their original squad and it pays to have a wider group having had some kind of exposure rather than be thrown in cold. There’s also been a couple of departures – and a few more pending – from the squad that was picked to play the Lions, with Charlie Faumuina and Aaron Cruden already in France and Tawera Kerr-Barlow and Malakai Fekitoa making their way after the Mitre 10 Cup. Sport New Highlanders coach Former All Black midfielder Aaron Mauger has signed a three-year deal to coach the Highlanders, replacing the Japan-bound Tony Brown. Mauger joins an experienced coaching team alongside Mark Hammett, Clarke Dermody and Jon Preston. Highlanders chief executive Roger Clark described Mauger as a high-calibre appointment. “Aaron has demonstrated to us the passion, commitment and dedication to coaching at the club that we believe are vital at this level,” Clark said.

McIlroy dumps caddy Rory McIlroy has turned to his best friend to undertake emergency caddying duties for the final major of the year, after the shock dismissal of JP Fitzgerald. McIlroy is playing in this week’s WGC Bridgestone Invitational in Akron. Harry Diamond will take the bag and will also be on the world No. 4’s shoulder at next week’s USPGA Championship. Quail Hollow will be McIlroy’s last chance to win a major in 2017 and so avoid a third successive majorless campaign in a row. Even though there have long been calls for McIlroy to split with Fitzgerald – indeed, ever since his infamous Masters meltdown in 2011 – few expected it to occur at this exact juncture. McIlroy finished in a tie for
fourth at the Open Championship and, during the Royal Birkdale event, he was effusive in his praise of the bagman, with whom he worked for almost a decade, winning four major titles and 18 other tournaments around the world. McIlroy revealed that his fellow Irishman snapped him out of his first-round mire, telling him: “You’re Rory McIIroy – what the f*** are you doing?” “JP did a great job,” McIlroy later said, after recovering from five-over to record a one-over round. “He kept me positive out there and that was very much appreciated.” However, two days later, McIlroy’s charge for a second Claret Jug was derailed, when he took a double bogey on the 10th, courtesy of the wrong club selection off the tee. Do not expect an overload of sympathy, either, and not just because Fitzgerald is estimated to have earned more than £8m ($NZ14m) in his employment with McIlroy. by his peers, some of whom believe the mistake at Birkdale was merely the latest error. Within the game, McIlroy has long been urged to employ a new caddie, but McIlroy remained fiercely loyal to Fitzgerald. When American Jay Townsend, a former pro who is an analyst for various media outlets, criticised McIlroy’s course management and pointed the finger at Fitzgerald, the golfer vociferously hit back on Twitter. But, at last, the need to freshen up and, of course, to try to emulate Jordan Spieth’s brilliant strategy skills, which were instrumental in him winning his third Major at Birkdale, look to have persuaded McIlroy that this was the moment for a change. Injury forces retirement New Zealand swimmer Lauren Boyle has been forced into retirement by a troublesome hip injury. She leaves the sport as a one of New Zealand’s all-time best, winning two silvers at the 2015 world championships, 2014 Commonwealth Games gold and silver, as well as being a three-time Olympian. She suffered a hip injury in 2016 that eventually led to major surgery in May this year. Dangerfield accepts ban Reigning AFL Brownlow Medallist Patrick Dangerfield has accepted his one-match suspension, making him ineligible for this year’s award. The Geelong star would have risked a two-game ban had he challenged his rough conduct charge at the tribunal and lost.
