Two men who have lost relatives to cancer and a group of “good bastards” have organised a charity event for Leukaemia and Blood Cancer New Zealand. Rick Harkness, whose father died battling leukaemia on April 23, and Steve Keene, whose mother died battling blood cancer five years ago, and four of their friends, have decided to give back to those who supported them. lot of blood transfusions at the start of the year. “It’s a way of giving back to Leukaemia and Blood Cancer New Zealand because they were really supportive to dad and mum,” he said. He pitched the idea to Mr Keene, his neighbour, who came on board the next day. Darren Rose, Todd Smyth, Jarrod Ross and Robbie Shefford joined the two later. “The rest of the team jumped on board because they’re just good bastards really. “We’re not a charitable organisation, we’re just a group of six guys trying to make something good happen for the world,” he said. The show will be held at the Ashburton A&P Showgrounds on September 3 between 9am and 4pm, tickets will be avail-

able at the gate and all proceeds go to the charity. Mr Keene said they had a huge amount of support from a lot of local and national businesses, who donated equipment to run the show, including a children’s entertainment area with a bouncy castle. He said they have 60 trucks confirmed and they hope to have around 80 in total, with a range of both new and old trucks. “It’s good for people to come along and meet the drivers and get some education about the truck,” he said. Mr Harkness said they were really thankful for the support they had been getting from businesses and drivers and anyone else who wanted to get on board should call him on 027 326-4862 or Mr Keene on 021 740-855.
