Three killed in horror crash

Three people have died and a fourth is in a critical condition after a horror crash on the outskirts of Ashburton yesterday.

Just after 10am two vehicles collided at the intersection of Hepburns and Mitcham roads.

Senior sergeant Matt Emery said the cause of the crash would be identified by the serious crash unit, but they understand that a ute travelling westbound along Mitcham Road has collided with a green station wagon travelling north along Hepburns Road.

A give-way sign is located at the intersection, with traffic travelling along Hepburns Road required to give way.

“It is an incredibly tragic accident,” he said.

“Upon arrival it was clear there were two cars involved and that it had been quite a high speed impact.

“St John treated and transported one person to hospital but unfortunately three people have passed away at the scene.”

The force of the impact between the two vehicles separated the station wagon in to two separate pieces.

The deceased are understood to be one woman and two young children who were travelling in the green station wagon.

The person who was transported to Christchurch Hospital in a critical condition by helicopter is a teenager who was also in the vehicle.

The driver of the ute was able to walk away from the vehicle and was treated for injuries by St John and transported to Ashburton Hospital.

The road remained closed for most of the day as the scene was cleared.

Ashburton Fire Chief Alan Burgess said the work required from firefighters at the scene was minimal, with only minor extraction work required.

Support networks are in place for firefighters for dealing with distressing events like this one, something that is important Burgess said.

The accident was part ofa horror day on New Zealand roads, with nine people losing their lives.

Five family members died when their car slammed into a tree south of Kinleith, while a person passed away following their vehicle crashing into water near Auckland Airport.

Yesterday’s nine deaths follow five road fatalities at the weekend.

A motorcyclist died following a crash in Brightwater, Tasman about 3.20pm on Sunday.

A mother and child were killed after a crash on State Highway One near Kaipara at 8.50pm on Sunday. Two others, one a child, were taken to hospital in serious condition.

Another two people were also killed in a crash in Hawera about 8.25pm on Saturday.

As of yesterday, 92 people had been killed on the country’s roads so far this year, according to Ministry of Transport data.

That was less than the 104 people killed in the same period last year and about equal with 2017 when 91 people were killed in the first three months.

The accident yesterday brings Mid Canterbury’s road toll to five for 2019.

“We are committed to reducing death and injury on our roads, and we work alongside our road safety partners to do this. But we cannot do it alone, we need everyone’s help to keep our roads safe,” police assistant commissioner Sandra Venable said.

“Remember, decisions you make as a driver impact not only on you, but on everybody else on the road. You have a responsibility to yourself, your passengers, and other road users to drive safely.

“Road safety is something we all

have to take responsibility for.”

Associate transport minister Julie Anne Genter said that accidents like those yesterday are something that should not be accepted.

“Over the weekend, and again today, we’ve been reminded why any fatality is a tragedy. Families, and whole communities are in shock and I know there’ll be much grief and sadness,” Genter said.

In 2013 a woman was transported to Ashburton Hospital after the ute she was driving was involved in a collision at the intersection of Hepburns and Mitcham roads.

A south-bound black sedan failed to slow down for the giveway sign at the intersection, ploughing into the side of the Toyota Hilux ute the woman awas driving towards Ashburton.

The black sedan hit the ute, sending it skidding sideways into a roadside concrete culvert, before finishing in the middle of

Mitcham Road, about 30m from the intersection.

The black sedan was pulled to the side of the road with a shredded front bumper, the driver and passengers shaken but unhurt.

The intersection was also the scene of a non-fatal crash in November 2016.

The Ashburton District Council says the lines on the road were replaced recently as part of the council’s regular road maintenance programme, and that the signs were well placed at the intersection.

NZ Transport Agency director of safety and environment Harry Wilson said with the Easter holiday period approaching, everyone needed to remember plan ahead, take regular breaks, and stay safe on our roads.

“Every road tragedy has a ripple effect out into our communities, our workplaces and of course within families,” Wilson said.

Idea support workers strike for fairer conditions

Local IDEA Services staff members from Ashburton joined their colleagues from around the country yesterday in leaving work to strike.

Staff members that are part of the Etu union took to the chessboard on East Street from 7am yesterday morning, armed with signs, striking because they feel they are under-valued, under-paid, and, all too often, unhappy.

Ashburton Etu union delegate Tricia Phillips said the strike action was a culmination a number of factors.

“We feel very undervalued,” she said.

“We are striking for four hours today and if our demands are not met we will strike for longer next time.”

Phillips said staff are now being restricted in how much sick leave they can accumulate, are expected to be more flexible with

the hours they work due to under-staffing and even something as simple as providing an evening meal for staff working late.

“There is a lot of frustration about feeling undervalued,” she said.

Prior to the industrial action,

IDEA Services chief operating officer Joan Cowan said plans had been put in place to ensure the care level provided by the servic-

es would not be affected by the action.

IDEA Services said they would carefully consider all demands (either financial or otherwise) and continually balance staff remuneration with other quality improvement priorities such as learning and development, staffing levels, health and safety and work tools (such as vehicles and technology).

They say they are committed to settling a collective employment agreement for support and administration staff, and that they have listened to the concerns raised by staff and hope to provide an offer to address them.

CBD’s tallest building under construction

Business confidence in Ashburton is climbing, along with the town’s skyline.

Construction of what will be Ashburton’s tallest building is under way, and already almost all commercial sites in it are leased, one year out from completion.

Competition has been strong for the sites, and the Guardian understands a well-known coffee chain missed out on the ground floor site.

The coffee chain manager did not wish to comment, but the Guardian understands the business is searching for another site in the town.

Developer Willie Murney is also not giving any information on who

future tenants may be, but said “pretty much all” of the four sites, one at each level of the four-storey building on the corner of East Street and Burnett Street, were signed up.

“We have had plenty of phone calls,” Murney said.

“We are definitely confident it will all be signed off well before we are built, we are either signed up or in talks.”

He believed the interest reflected strong confidence in a growing and busy town.

Murney said the new building would complement Somerset House, which is also four storeys and is located across the road at the same intersection. Somerset House is the CBD’s current tallest building.

Murney said the new building, yet to be named, would be a similar height, but it would be a little taller.

“And that street (Burnett Street) will go ahead I think, with the MSA (restaurant redevelopment) and Eastfields doing their thing, hopefully the CBD will get that kick that it needs,” he said.

How long the new building will be Ashburton’s tallest is yet to be seen.

There is potential competition on the horizon from Eastfield Scenic Hotel, set to be built down the road on Cass Street.

However, there are no indications at this stage that the building will be huge, and developers have not yet decided the number of rooms or the size.

Dress-up day to help those in need St Joseph’s School Ashburton children got to have fun dressing up, while raising money at the same time yesterday. Annually, the school raises funds throughout Lent for Caritas, and this year money will go to help people in South Sudan. Principal Cath Blacklow said lessons about issues faced by the Sudanese were being held in conjunction with the fundraising. The mufti day had been a highlight, and children dressed in all manner of clothes guided by themes chosen by each individual class. One class came in their pyjamas, while other themes included sports stars, movie characters and super heroes.

A procession was held around the school grounds, with music. “I think everybody looks fabulous,” Blacklow said.

A nationwide electric vehicle information roadshow is set to stop off in Methven.

She said as well as weed-pulling and cutting, some poisoning was required to stop the regeneration of weeds, although the long-term plan is not to need to use poison.

Planting projects and bi-monthly working bees are also planned.

A weed-related weaving workshop was also a feature of the weekend. Volunteers learned how to weave sycamore and cotoneaster waste into compost bins.

The large woven bins will be used as biodegradable containers for weeds and food scraps from the camp.

“It’s all part of the permaculture approach to maintaining and growing the forest,” de Spa said She hopes it will be a place people come for personal rejuvenation as well.

Part of the area cleared has been turned into a meditative space with artworks made from weeds.

The plan is also to encourage locals to reconnect with the forest.

“It’s a little jewel – a priceless treasure that a lot of people don’t know about, right on their doorsteps.”

■■REFUSE AND RECYCLING

Recycling facility open soon Ashburton residents will soon have a new and improved area to sort and dispose of their recycling at the Ashburton Resource Recovery Park.

The Ashburton District Council has upgraded the public recycling drop-off site and this officially opens on April 24.

The $190,000 upgrade sees the old facility relocated from next to the weighbridge to a larger, undercover area behind the Reuse Shop.

Weed treatment for Staveley gem The future looks great for a small piece of remnant forest in Mid Canterbury, thanks to a group of dedicated volunteers.

The nine-hectare Staveley Camp Forest was, until recently, a little unloved and overrun by weeds – the major invaders in the predominantly black beech forest were ivy, cotoneaster and sycamore.

The forest is on private QE2 covenanted land and is part of Staveley Camp, which is used by a wide variety of community groups, from schools and churches through to search and rescue, meditation and patchwork groups.

Work in the past has helped the forest survive and now a determined effort has begun which has already rejuvenated both the forest and the weedbusters themselves.

The Staveley Camp committee (part of the national Weedbusters network, which is supported by Environment Canterbury) asked for the forest to be covenanted and applied for funding to cut the weeds. The group held its first major weedbusting weekend toward the end of last year, during which around 100 people from Mid Canterbury and as far afield as Christchurch took part.

Visitors to the Range Street Resource Recovery Park will need to use gate one to access the new drop-off site, and will then be able to continue through to the weighbridge or exit the park from gate two.

The upgraded facility is a smarter, larger, one-way layout that streamlines the flow of the park in a more ordered fashion, council service delivery group manager Neil McCann said.

“When it opens, visitors won’t

have to cross over in front of other vehicles when moving between the recycling drop-off and weighbridge areas. They’ll also be able to sort their recycling undercover, out of any wet weather, unlike the current set up,” he said.

The council had originally expected the facility to be open for business on April 1, however final fit-outs and paving needed around the area has pushed the opening date back to Wednesday, April 24, McCann said.

The new drop-off area will operate the same way that the current one does with residents able to sort their recycling into large labelled collection bins. Empty agri-chemical containers, ADC branded black rubbish bags and items for the Reuse Shop can also be left in designated areas of the facility.

Signs are displayed at the start of each lane in the drop-off area to indicate which lane visitors will need to drive into.

People with military-style semiautomatic (MSSA) weapons and assault rifles have until the end of September to hand them over to police or face five years’ jail.

And Police Minister Stuart Nash has issued a stern warning to gangs who have said they will keep their MSSAs: hand them in or face a new penalty of up to five years’ jail. The Arms (Prohibited Firearms, Magazines and Parts) Amendment Bill has been introduced to Parliament and will have its first reading today, Acting Prime Minister Winston Peters and Nash announced yesterday. It will be reported back from select committee on April 8 following a shortened period of public consultation, and come into force on April 12.

Power on for Haast Residents in Haast have finally had their power restored after six days living without, while the local council warns it could take weeks to repair some of the roads.

A major clean-up is under way on the West Coast after heavy rain hammered the region last week, washing away many roads in the district and plunging parts of the region into darkness and isolation. A council spokesperson said council, contractors and other agencies were working hard to get all roads functioning as soon as possible.

■■DUCK SHOOTING SEASON

Time to book duck shooting stands Game bird hunters have been reminded to stake their claim on their favourite maimai or duck shooting stand before the start of the new hunting season, starting Saturday, May 4.

The process of claiming a hunting stand goes under many names depending on region – including marking up, pegging and tagging.

If a hunter wants to retain their favoured spot from last season, they must do it before 10am on Sunday, April 7.

Other hunters wanting to stake their claim over an unclaimed maimai for the first time must wait until after 10am on that date.

The rule applies to all 12 Fish & Game regions around the country.

“Tagging your favoured maimai allows you to set yourself up for the season ahead, ready to harvest birds over opening weekend – and then have first claim on that spot for the rest of the season,” said policy and planning manager Robert Sowman.

Rules on who can use a hunting spot also apply once the game bird hunting season begins.

“The rules state that hunters then need to be at the maimai within one hour of the opening hour of hunting.

Hunters are being reminded to sort their hunting spot ahead of opening weekend.

“If they aren’t there within that time, the spot can be used by any other licensed hunter for the rest of the day,” he said.

To reclaim your spot for the upcoming season you first need to buy your 2019-20 Game Bird Licence, he said.

When completing your licence application form, make sure you click the stand claim tag if you

want one sent to you with your licence. Unless you do, you won’t be sent the additional plastic tag with your plastic licence.

Death penalty avoided A Vietnamese woman accused of killing Kim Jong-nam, the half-brother of North Korea’s leader, has pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of causing hurt by potentially deadly means.

A Malaysian court sentenced Doan Thi Huong to three years and four months in jail, starting from her arrest in February 2017.

However, under Malaysian law she could be freed by May, her lawyer said.

Huong would have faced the death penalty if found guilty of the murder.

Kim, the estranged half-brother of Kim Jong-un, was assassinated at Kuala Lumpur Airport in 2017 in broad daylight, with the toxic nerve agent VX. The development effectively means no-one has been held accountable for Kim’s death.

“In the first week of May, she will go home,” Huong’s lawyer Hisyam Teh Poh Teik told reporters at the Shah Alam court, outside Malaysia’s capital.

Her step-mother Nguyen Thi Vy told BBC Vietnamese the family was “very happy”.

“We have felt so thankful for all the support from the government, lawyers and communities,” she said.

The judge’s decision comes after Huong’s Indonesian co-defendant Siti Aisyah unexpectedly walked free last month, after intervention

Show’s fans fired up Fans are fired up after TVNZ announced it will again delay airing its hit black comedy, Fresh Eggs in light of the Christchurch terror attack. TVNZ yesterday announced that the final two episodes of the show will now play on May 5 – both on air and On Demand as “the finale contains extreme gun violence and a hostage situation”. A statement added: “These scenes are set in a New Zealand town, and that’s a bit too close to home right now. We know this decision will be disappointing for some of you – many of you feel ok to watch the series again this week.”

They say they were tricked into carrying out the killing – which involved smearing a lethal nerve agent on the victim’s face – and believed they were part of a reality TV prank.

Erdogan gains locally, but loses capital Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan declared victory in municipal elections but the opposition’s success in key cities dealt a significant blow to his party’s dominance. The ruling party lost the capital Ankara and the race for Istanbul mayor was still too close to call.

The local elections were widely seen as a test of support for Erdogan as the nation of 81 million people faces a daunting economic recession with double-digit inflation, rising food prices and high unemployment.

The main opposition party winning the race for metropolitan mayor in Ankara marks a symbolic shift. The capital city was held by Erdogan’s Justice and Development Party, the AKP, and its Islamic-oriented predecessor for 25 years.

More than 57 million voters were eligible to take part in choosing the mayors of 30 major cities, 51 provincial capitals and 922 districts in Turkey.

According to unofficial results by state-run Anadolu news agency, Mansur Yavas, the secular Republican People’s Party or CHP’s candidate, has won the top post in Ankara. The AKP still holds a majority of Ankara’s 25 districts.

The government had led a hostile campaign against Yavas and his party, accusing him of forgery and tax evasion.

But Erdogan still came out on top as the ruling party and its allied nationalist party won more than half of votes across Turkey.

Speaking from the balcony of party headquarters in An-

kara where he has for years declared victory, Erdogan said he and his allies had come out first.

Admitting setbacks, he said the party would work to understand and fix where they failed.

Ballot counts were still under way in Turkey’s largest city and commercial hub Istanbul. Both candidates – Ekrem Imamoglu for the CHP and former Prime Minister Binali Yildirim for the AKP – claimed they won.

The mayor’s seat in the city of 15 million is important. Erdogan’s own ascent to power began there in 1994.

In predominantly Kurdish provinces, a pro-Kurdish party won seven municipal mayor seats but lost some strongholds to the ruling party.

The government had replaced elected mayors with government-appointed trustees in a crackdown on the Peoples’ Democratic Party, or HDP, for alleged links to outlawed Kurdish militants.

The HDP regained some of those posts but not all.

Rapper shot dead US rapper Nipsey Hussle has died after being shot out the front of his clothing store in Los Angeles. The Grammynominated rapper, whose real name is Ermias Asghedom, was reportedly one of three men who were gunned down outside of Marathon Clothing, NBC News said. It is believed the two other victims are in a serious condition. Hussle was reportedly shot multiple times before being transported to hospital where he was pronounced dead. The suspected shooter is allegedly still at large, with TMZ reporting the attack was gang related.

Lead role for Matafeo Kiwi comedian and actor Rose Matafeo has hit the big time – again – after landing a lead role an upcoming BBC sitcom. According to Chortle, Matafeo will star in a show called Star Struck, which follows a twenty-something woman as she attempts to navigate life and love while living in London. The comedy is directed by American Karen Maine, whose autobiographical film Yes, God, Yes premiered at SXSW Festival in Texas to massive acclaim. Maine says Edinburgh Comedy Award winner Matafeo is “amazing” adding: “Everyone’s going to know who she is in a few months”.

A horror day in Mid Canterbury T

ragedy struck at the very heart of our small district yesterday and it packed a punch that will leave many feeling winded for days to come.

News of a tragic accident in which lives are lost anywhere in our country is tough, but when it’s on your own back doorstep and has such a toll on life, it becomes even tougher to bear.

Especially so when there are younger lives involved, innocent children whose lives have been ripped away in a heartbeat.

What unfolded yesterday on a reasonably quiet stretch of rural Mid Canterbury road will have a lasting impact that will stick around for days and for many various reasons.

Most important, of course, are

those who are directly involved.

The family and loved ones of those who have lost their lives and those of the individual who was in the other vehicle.

For them the coming days will be very tough.

The questions of what if and if only will run through their minds at a frenetic pace and that numb feeling will be around for some time to come.

But there ares also the first

responders – our incredible emergency services, St John, police and Fire and Emergency New Zealand volunteers, who drop whatever it is they are doing at the beep of a pager and rush to help those in need. They witnessed firsthand things that no person should ever have to witness and they will need as much support as possible.

Then there’s the people from around that particular area. A farming and rural community, a close-knit bunch. They will now, forever, have the constant stark reminder of what happened on their little patch of the district.

The marks will eventually fade and the fences will be rebuilt, but memories and images are tough things to lose track of and the

approach to that intersection will cause those memories to flood back every time for a long time.

Ashburton is not immune to terrible and tragic accidents on our roads.

Yesterday’s accident isn’t the first and it most certainly, sadly, won’t be the last.

Over time we’ve seen some within the district that have made a huge impact on those involved, irrelevant of what their role is.

But yesterday left a very raw and emotion-charged feeling – that doesn’t seem to come around all that often.

Perhaps it was the knowledge of those young children, or the seemingly innocuous way in which so many lives were turned

upside down in just on brief moment and one decision.

But there is a message.

And it’s one that every single person in this district who drives a motor vehicle could do with adhering too, if they don’t already.

No matter how skilled you might think you are as a driver, there is always the lurking presence of the unpredictable and we need to be careful on our roads.

Not only was yesterday a horror day for Mid Canterbury, but with multiple other accidents around the country, it was a horror day for New Zealand.

Drive smart and drive safe.

No-one wants a repeat of the tragedy that unfolded yesterday.

Ever again.

Tsunami of challenges racing at farmers M

ost industry sectors face tough challenges, and farming is no different.

But few would face the sheer conglomeration of issues that are coming at agriculture.

I was asked to give a presentation about this at the Central Districts Field Days earlier this month. I told those who came along that I don’t have much time for those who complain that there is too much change happening.

After all, we eagerly go out and view the newest and best farming toys and technology on display at field days, and that’s just another form of change.

There’s nothing anyone can do to even slow the pace of change.

But coming down the line at farmers are issues around farm standards and new regulations, animal welfare, water quality, climate change, a host of proposed new taxes, international trading barriers, alternative proteins, worker shortages – to name a few.

It seems to me that farmers could handle one or two of these on their own, but at the moment it seems like a tsunami rising up all at once.

It’s also true that progress on any one of these issues so often has fish-hooks and unintended consequences.

For example, quite a few farmers are re-establishing and fencing off wetlands (which, by the way, costs quite a bit of time and lost income potential) because it’s good for water quality and biodiversity. But wetlands also emit methane, one of the climate change gases we’re being told to reduce.

It’s getting harder and harder to attract enough starting-out farm workers with the right motivation and work ethic, given relatively low unemployment levels and competition from urban employers.

Many farmers have lifted their game on employment conditions, and five-day working weeks.

The fish hook is that the farmer him or herself has to massively step up their own working hours when Mother Nature or some other unforeseen circumstance throws in a curve ball.

It becomes a real balancing act achieving a good work experi-

ence for staff without burning yourself out and compromising your own mental and physical well-being.

With issues such as animal welfare and water quality, so often our challenge is with perception rather than reality.

Photos and video clips can be presented out of context, with just the muddy patch shown in an otherwise well-grassed paddock, or of a farm practice that is acknowledged as best for the animal but which an urban person might not understand.

When I hear people say “I used to swim in my local river, but not any more”, I want to say, “What river are you talking about? Let’s look at the latest data. At what time of the year did you used to swim there?”

Official LAWA (Land, Air, Water Aotearoa) statistics show improvement in the quality of just as many waterways as degradation, with the vast majority static, or showing no change.

But that’s not the perception gained from media coverage.

When groups like Federated Farmers put these counter arguments to negative headlines, we’re often dismissed as industry shrills. So instead, the media tend to turn to one or two water scientists who seem keen to make a

name for themselves.

Even our government officials tend to stick in their own silos – water quality, environment, health and safety, etc.

They’re not looking at the challenges in the wider-picture, whole farm context, and weighing up all the pros, cons and ramifications as farmers must.

It may be that technology – the kinds of innovations on show at field days – that is going to be the key that helps us make it all work.

IT and automation can handle some of the more repetitive tasks, freeing up time and boosting work satisfaction for farm workers.

Our best hope for livestock greenhouse gas emissions is that scientific breakthroughs, such as a vaccine, will provide a circuit breaker for that currently inescapable fact that grass/feed in = methane out.

Ploughmen’s NZ-first attempt Tim Cronshaw

Farmers will attempt in one hour to have a large Chertsey grass paddock cultivated, ploughed and cultivated again into a seedbed for drilling in winter barley using three massive tractors with 12 furrow ploughs next month.

The grass-to-barley attempt during the two-day New Zealand Ploughing Championships is understood to have never been done before in the hour in New Zealand.

Attempts will be made each day on two four-hectare paddocks at 2.30pm after the close of competitive ploughing during the May 11 and 12 championships. Event organisers have introduced the event to draw in more onlookers for the ploughing championships.

The largest of the three tractors is Peter Butterick’s 525-horsepower eight-wheeled Versatile with the May brothers and fellow agricultural contractor Roger Smith on John Deere tractors.

All of them will tow 12 furrow ploughs and are expected to make short work of the sprayed grass paddock.

the public to see some of the biggest machinery in New Zealand,’’ said demonstration convener John Hall.

“To have three 12-furrows ploughing and the biggest tractors of 525hp and the others only slightly less but still massive is not something you see every day.

“This has never been attempted before what we are trying to do.’’

Hall said the public enclosure would be fenced off for their safety, but onlookers would still be close enough to see the action.

“We are intending to have some of the largest tractors and machinery in New Zealand there and the 8ha will be cultivated, ploughed and cultivated again for a seed bed and drilled in winter barley each day. The public

never get to see this machinery working because it’s just too big.’’

A quad track tractor with a large set of discs from Hewson Farms – likely the largest in New Zealand – will also be part of the attempt and Power Farming will be drilling the barley.

“We estimate it will take about an hour to go from a grass paddock to be drilled in barley and it’s never been done before as far as we know. You don’t bring machinery worth millions of dollars to do four hectares.’’

The Rakaia Ploughing Match Association (RPMA) is hosting the event and its members are working hard with the Wilkinson family to prepare the site at Wilkinson Road ready for the national event.

The family has been on the fifth generation property since 1876 and Kate Wilkinson, a former Minister of Conservation who held other cabinet positions, is the latest owner.

The last time the national championships were held in Mid Canterbury was in 2010 during the world championships.

Adding spice to the competition for the Silver Plough trophy is that Marlborough ploughman

Ian Woolley will not be defending his title in the conventional class.

Woolley was third in the world championships in Germany last year and his tractor is understood to still be in the host country.

Defending his title in the reversible class will be South Canterbury’s Bob Mehrtens.

Mehrtens was also at the world event and after a slow start finished third in the grasslands ploughing.

Among the local ploughmen will be Simon Read from Rakaia in the conventional ploughing and vintage ploughmen Pearce Watson and Maurice Millar.

RPMA chairman John Davison said the ploughmen were grateful for Kate Wilkinson making the farm available and setting their crop rotations to suit the event’s need for grazed grass and barley stubble.

“There is quite a bit of the farm tied up. We are using four paddocks so it’s about 40ha and it’s quite a commitment to the farm.’’

A large contingent of vintage machinery was expected to also be on display, including Davison’s 9G Chamberlain which has an interesting history.

Mycoplasma bovis meeting rescheduled for Ashburton Tim Cronshaw

The Ministry for Primary Industries has set a new date for Ashburton’s cancelled mycoplasma bovis meeting for farmers and the public.

Ashburton’s meeting was called off last Friday because it clashed with the National Remembrance Service for the terror attack on

Christchurch mosques.

Instead, it will be held at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre on April 10. An initial meeting from 10.30am to 3.30pm is for affected farmers and will be followed by a 4pm-5.30pm meeting for members of the public.

A large gathering is expected to attend with farmers preparing hard questions for MPI leaders in

advance of the next disease update.

The first public meetings in Stratford and Hunterville last week were well attended.

There remains 29 infected properties in the South Island. They include 19 active infected properties in Canterbury, six in Otago, three in Southland and one in Tasman.

Another five infected properties are in the North Island, MPI said in

its March 29 stakeholder update.

Nationally, there are 72 properties under a restricted-place notice, including the infected properties, and 146 properties under a notice of direction.

Farmers have filed 871 claims for compensation to MPI with 550 of them either completed or part payments made, totalling $55.7 million. So far 309,751

samples have been received nationally by the Animal Health Lab and 309,097 tests completed.

As part of the response to eradicate M. bovis 89,975 animals have been culled.

In reply to a farmer query, MPI said embryo transfers from cattle within an infected herd are prohibited because they could spread the M. bovis bacteria.

MARKET REPORT

By Guy Trafford You can never have too many friends in high places and this particularly applies to agriculture at the moment.

Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment (PCE) Simon Upton looks as though he may well be one worth following.

His recently released report Farms, forests and fossil fuels: The next great landscape transformation? has shown a fresh approach to New Zealand’s unique and problematic emissions’ profile.

When Federated Farmers come out in tacit support and Greenpeace are at the other end of the spectrum picking holes wherever they can and seemingly to miss the crux of what the PCE is saying and seem intent on just trying to kick dairying, the worm really has turned.

Farming has not been let off the hook, it is just that Simon Upton is prepared to allow science to do the arguing for how any future policies should be developed.

He has also brought a degree of pragmatism to the debate seemingly setting achievable targets rather than aspirational ones which have been consistently missed the last 20 or so years. He has come out with three major recommendations for Parliament as it moves to consider the Climate Change Bill: ■■ Develop two separate targets for the second half of the century: a zero gross fossil emissions target to be legislated as part of the establishment of the new Climate Commission; and a reduction target for biological emissions to be recommended by the new commission and subsequently legislated. A later date than 2050 would still be consistent with the Paris Agreement and should not be ruled out if that is considered to be a more credible and achievable time frame within which to effect such a significant economic transformation.

■■ Allow access to forest sinks as offsets only for biological emissions on a basis to be advised by the Climate Commission.

■■ Develop the tools needed to manage biological sources and sinks in the context of a landscape-based approach that embraces water, soil and biodiversity objectives.

From a farming and, in particular, livestock farming viewpoint this doesn’t change things dramatically from what has already been in discussion.

Methane and nitrous oxide will still need to be reduced and the PCE has been careful not to come out with a figure recommending what level of reduction farming needs to be.

The modelling has provided two specific examples and they are a 20 per cent re-

duction and a 100 per cent reduction. The IPCC has recently spoken of a 34 per cent reduction for biologically-emitted methane.

The interesting and new idea brought to the table is making sequestering of CO2e (methane and nitrous oxide) through forestry only available to ‘biological’ (hence methane and nitrous oxide) emissions.

The logic being, forestry cannot be seen as a permanent solution, a natural full sequestration cycle of pinus radiata is about 50 years, but as methane and nitrous oxide are considered short-term gases and providing New Zealand does not lift its methane and nitrous oxide emissions over a longer period, then a short term removal will balance the CO2e equation.

Markets Sheep Little change to schedules, but there is a small lift and saleyards are holding firm with some upward movement starting to be observed.

Wool Being a North Island sale, little fine wool to report on and the coarser wools and lambs have held at recent levels.

Beef An interesting occurrence in the cow schedules with one processor continuing to lower the schedule while others have lifted theirs.

As an average all classes of beef had modest lifts which is a refreshing turnaround. Saleyard prices have held with reduced offerings. The first weaner calf fairs have started with Culverden and Glen Lyon taking place last week.

Top price at Culverden was $1360 for early-born angus hereford cross steers, 357kg calves which achieved a discounted per kg price of $3.81 while top per kg price was $5.20 for a line of 177kg angus steers.

On a per kg basis heifers were not far off the steer prices with top price of $1140 for a line of angus hereford cross weighing 308kg and selling for $340/kg. These came from the same vendor as the top-priced steers. The Glen Lyon sale was back somewhat with prices for steers ranging from $666 to $940.

Venison While one processor has arrested their decline in the deer schedule, the other has continued with a 10 cent drop and if the same occurs next week the price will begin with an 8. The first time since June 2017.

Dairy The Oceania monitored site has continued to track upwards with the exception of skim milk powder. This augurs well for the next GDT auction on the 3rd (NZ time) although Dairy Farmers of America, which will be lodging milk powder with the GDT in future, may create more supply pressure.

Heartland Group’s banking subsidiary is seeking $75 million through a five-year bond offer and will pay at least 3.5 per cent annual interest.

The listed financial services firm’s licensed banking unit, Heartland Bank, yesterday opened an offer for five-year unsecured, unsubordinated fixed-rate notes. The issue margin above the five-year swap rate, expected to lie between 1.75 and 1.9 per cent, will be set in a bookbuild on April 5.

At yesterday’s five-year swap rate of 1.7525 per cent, that implies annual interest of 3.5025-3.6025 per cent.

When Heartland flagged the offer last week, advisory firm Chris Lee & Partners estimated the rate would be set near 3.4 per cent. Heartland Bank currently offers 3.95 per cent on a five-year term deposit, according to interest.co.nz data.

Heartland restructured its businesses last year to separate out its Australian reverse mortgage to free it from the Reserve Bank’s prudential rules.

It first tapped the listed debt market to help fund its lending programme in 2017. That $150 million, five-year bond, pays annual interest

of 4.5 per cent and last traded at a yield of 3.02 per cent.

Listed companies have found NZX’s debt market to be an attractive source of funding in recent years, as subdued interest rates have made it easier to secure cheap finance on long maturities.

About 88 per cent of Heartland Bank’s $3.41 billion of funds come from retail deposits, and its tier 1 capital ratio of 13.25 per cent was above the minimum of 8.5 per cent.

Heartland’s gross loan book expanded to $3.52 billion at December

31, from $3.37 billion as at June 30, with strong growth in business and auto lending through the period.

The bond offer won’t have a public pool, with all notes reserved for the joint lead managers and their clients, NZX primary market participants, and other institutional investors. The joint lead managers are Bank of New Zealand, Commonwealth Bank of Australia, Deutsche Craigs and Westpac Banking Corp.

Heartland shares rose 0.7 per cent to $1.51 at yesterday’s open.

25g butter 1/4 C tomato sauce 2T hot sauce 4 Waitoa chicken thighs 1/2 iceberg lettuce, shredded 1 celery stalk, sliced Handful of fresh coriander 1C corn kernels 1/2 red capsicum, deseeded and diced 100g blue cheese Sour cream, to serve

through cooking and continue to bake. Remove from oven, place in a bowl and pour over the remaining sauce. Set aside.

■■ Assemble the bowls by laying the iceberg lettuce as the base.

Divide the remaining salad ingredients amongst the bowls,

along with the blue cheese.

■■ Slice the chicken and add to the bowls, then add sour cream if desired. Serve immediately.

Wearing your heart on a sleeve?

T

here is a saying about wearing your heart on your sleeve and recently people have been showing their feelings and thoughts by wearing bright colours or items of clothing to show support for our Muslim community.

Many women have donned scarves or headdresses like hijab.

I’ve also heard of an event called Odd socks for Christchurch, where people wear odd socks to indicate that we are all unique.

While I was happy to wear a head scarf, I was surprised that some found it a surprisingly open form of support.

Yet when I first arrived in Canterbury, just before the earthquakes, I took part in a Wear Red and Black for Christchurch day (quite something for such a proud Otago person as myself) and purchased ‘earthquake socks’ as Christmas presents.

Wearing clothing is something we often don’t see as provocative

but it can have a huge impact on how we are viewed by the outside world.

You could argue that apart from showing support for an affected part of our community, it allowed those people who wore a scarf to walk a mile in the shoes of people who wear ‘different’ clothes every day.

Green What made me think even more about clothing and how it can very political was that the Sunday after the event in Christchurch was the March 17, St Patrick’s Day. That day everyone seems to be Irish and enthusiastically wear green to celebrate their ethnicity and culture.

Today people freely don green shirts and badges saying “Kiss me I’m Irish” and think little of it, but that was not always the case.

While most Irish people I’ve come across in New Zealand love green as it symbolises their background, in our family we

only wear green on St Patrick’s Day; all other days we avoid it like the plague.

Our suspicion about the colour came from my Irish Catholic great-grandmother who said it was unlucky and brought disaster.

I assumed that this fear was widespread and was surprised to discover it wasn’t. On investigation it made sense; her family came from Ulster and were proud nationalists, when being such was a criminal offence.

Wearing green, even green leaves in a buttonhole, made you likely to be persecuted, arrested, or worse.

We forget that for quite some time any evidence of nationalist or cultural pride was met with oppression from the English government.

Irish wearing green and Scottish highlanders wearing tartan was outlawed and, even when not a crime, often brought abuse or ridicule.

Eventually such signs of pride

in one’s culture or religion were permitted to return and now these same signs are celebrated and honoured.

It is hoped that just as the colour green has gained acceptance and normality, other people who choose to wear their culture will soon be able to do so without being fearful or indeed invoking fear.

Ideas can change. I continue to avoid green to signify the connection I have to that part of my family.

I could give in or keep my ideas about the colour to myself, but I don’t. To me, doing so would be turning my back on my culture and especially my grandmother and I couldn’t do that.

My cousins, however, never had the same conversations with our grandmother about her mother, so they don’t have the same beliefs. It’s always awkward when they give me green presents as they believe that if you are Irish you love green, so are doing me a great honour.

Wearing or not wearing particular items of clothing or colours isn’t always a choice. It sometime means much more than what those looking at the wearer can see.

Here at Ashburton Museum we celebrate and value the many different cultures we have in our community and believe everyone is unique and special.

Clothing clues Working on our current exhibition, Snap! The Glass Plate Negative Project, has revealed many different cultures, beliefs and messages sent through the clothing of Ashburtonians.

The images on this page all come from the Halma Collection – a treasure trove of portraits of local people from 1879 to the 1930.

Warriors: Confidence is down The Warriors insist their defensive issues can be fixed – but admit their confidence has taken a hammering over the last two games.

The Auckland team has had a nightmare fortnight, with back to back performances that conjured up memories of the bad old days.

Gone was the resilience and hunger on defence they displayed last year, when only four teams conceded fewer tries across the NRL season.

In the space of 46 minutes at Campbelltown in round two the Tigers crossed for six tries, as the Warriors had no answers. On Sunday in Christchurch their defence was even more porous, as Manly scored eight tries, and could have had four or five more.

It was a tough watch. Not only did the Warriors seem powerless at times to stop the Sea Eagles rolling up field – they often made 70 or 80 metres in a set – but they couldn’t defend their line, and several Manly tries came from short range.

The Warriors were on their heels, and grabbed and clawed at tackles, instead of driving with

“It’s about attitude and connection. In the middle we have to stay tight on the rucks. We were worrying about the shifts too much and us middles have got to stay real tight.

“We were just too loose and our first up contact wasn’t strong enough too. And when they get offloads, we have to try and shut it down, but we also have to stay calm.”

“It is little things that we need to improve that led to those moments,” Harris told Sky Television. “Little things early on in our

sets, things to do with our contact. If we clean those up then the back end of our sets we will be a lot tidier and we can stop those points coming in. [But] two weeks in a row we have let it pile in and that’s not good enough in this

competition.”

What about the absence of Simon Mannering? The long time captain was the king of the ‘one per centers’; so strong in the ruck, on the kick chase and cutting off a potential break, but Afoa believes the team can thrive without their former captain.

“I have full confidence in all the boys,” said Afoa. “We have a lot of boys that work hard on the field and we take pride in our defence.

But on Sunday we didn’t really show it. Hopefully we can bounce back well.”

The Warriors have dived badly over the last two weeks, but Afoa insists the team remain buoyant.

“A lot of people have asked that question about our confidence,” said Afoa. “Yeah, we are a bit down at the moment. We trained really well throughout [last] week and we wanted to come out firing after a disappointing performance against the Tigers.

“But we are trying to stay tight.

We can’t let one another down [and] in these moments it shows what kind of character we have as a team. We have to stay real tight.”

Bike Methven keen to host again

As the clean up from the 2019 South Island Secondary Schools’ Mountain Bike Championships continued yesterday, Bike Methven’s attention was already turning to their bid to host the 2020 event.

It was a massive weekend on the Bike Methven trails at Mt Hutt, with close to 500 young mountain bikers from around the South Island making their way to Methven to compete over three days. An enduro was held on Friday, followed by the downhill section on Saturday and the cross country on Sunday.

Bike Methven’s Clare Harden said it turned out Saturday’s downhill was thought to have been the biggest downhill mountainbike race ever held in New Zealand when it came to numbers. More than 270 took part in the downhill component.

“If I’d known it was going to be the biggest downhill event in New Zealand history, I might not have taken it on,” Harden joked.

Getting all those riders up the hill in order to go down the hill again was just one of the many logistical challenges officials from Bike Methven faced as first time hosts, and Harden said they were grateful for the help and advice they’d received from Bike Otago – the event’s hosts from the past five years, who were stepping up this year to host the nationals in October.

A few riders sustained cuts and bruises after coming off their bike, but Harden said she was not aware of any major injuries to riders.

“For that amount of kids and the tracks they were riding, it was amazing,” Harden said.

The event brought a huge number of people into Methven for the weekend, and Harden said a lot of businesses had reported an increase in trade that

Three Mid Canterbury schools were among those in action, and a number of students performed well across the weekend, including Methven brothers Patrick and Reilly Duff, two dedicated young Bike Methven members who each took out their respective downhill sections on Saturday.

tion, a couple of young Ashburton Intermediate riders finished the weekend with podium finishes. Oli Nicholls was third in the under-13 boys’ section and Gracie Trotter was third in the under-14 girls’ section.

In the under-13 boys’ section Kayne Johnston was fourth in the cross country, to round out a pretty good weekend for the Ashburton Intermediate contingent.

Ashburton College also had a number of riders in action, with Maddi Lowry finishing fourth in the under-16 girls’ cross country, and Mya Johnston fifth, while in the under-15 boys’ section Riley Blundell was 10th and Nick Kershaw was 11th.

In the under-16 boys’ section, Reuben Brown from Mountt Hutt College was 15th and in the under-17 section Ashburton Col-

lege’s Brad Blundell was sixth, while Ashburton College’s Caitlin Titheridge finished with a convincing win in the under-20 girls’ cross country.

While some riders only competed in some of the weekend’s events, others took part in all three and accumulated points to go towards an overall competition, which was taken out by Nelson Boys’ College.

‘I was out of order’: Boxer tackles then bites opponent

Boxer Kash Ali puts the bite on opponent David Price.

Top heavyweight David Price was left with a bite mark on his stomach after his opponent – a former sparring partner – lost the plot during a bout in Liverpool.

Price, who once floored Anthony Joshua, was the victim of a bizarre attack.

Previously unbeaten Kash Ali, who was disqualified in the fifth round, has apologised after biting Liverpudlian Price and also tackling him the ring.

Ali was pelted with objects by the incensed Liverpool crowd and Price immediately turned down the request for a re-match saying: “I don’t want to share the ring with an animal like that.”

Birmingham’s Ali had also been docked a point for hitting Price on the back of the head, and afterwards Price indicated he had been bitten three times.

The 35-year-old Price, an Olympic bronze medallist and former British champion, said: “I thought he had lost his head completely. I hurt him to the body just before the final bite he took.”

Ali said: “I think just the build-up to the

fight – It’s my first time boxing on a big stage, I was so pumped up I just wanted to fight. The street mentality just kicked in, it was stupid.

“As mad as it sounds, when I ended up on top of him, boxing went out the window.

“I just thought, ‘This is a fight now.’ Stupid.

I’ve got nothing else to say, just it was out of order and I apologise to him.”

Ali faces a long ban and former world cruiserweight champion Tony Bellew told Sky Sports that authorities should go even further. “(He is) a disgrace … he shouldn’t be allowed back in a boxing ring ever again,” Bellew said.

“He should not be paid for the fight – give the money to grassroots boxing and help develop amateur boxing. Biting a man when he’s on the floor … there aren’t many things lower.”

Price became a major part of the build up to last year’s world title clash between world number one Joshua and Kiwi Joseph Parker in Cardiff. The Parker camp highlighted a 2011 sparring incident when Price knocked down Joshua.

In brief Old All Black dies The oldest living All Black Ron Elvidge has died. The Otago great and former All Blacks captain played nine tests for New Zealand.

He died in Auckland on Saturday, aged 96. Elvidge famously scored the match-winning try in the 6-3 third test triumph over the Lions in 1950 despite suffering a bad collar bone injury and a serious facial wound. Elvidge never played for New Zealand again. “My memory of the game is pretty minimal,” he said in 2017. “I vaguely remember going over in the corner but the photo reminds me. I had been hurt, but not too badly; I remember the crash tackle.” Elvidge was accustomed to dealing with pressure before the Lions tour.

He captained Otago to beat Southland 17-11 and secure the Ranfurly Shield in 1947, and led them undefeated with the Log o’ Wood through 1948.

Fenton sidelined

Ricciardo issues ‘frustrating’ Daniel Riccardo’s Renault F1 team boss Cyril Abiteboul says the problems which have led to two retirements in the first two races for the Australian driver are frustrating and unacceptable.

Ricciardo was in 10th position at the Bahrain grand prix on Sunday when he was forced to retire with a few laps to go.

“After a very intense winter, it’s been a very bad start to our racing season,” Abiteboul said in Bahrain on Sunday.

“Our race today came to a sudden stop so close to the finish.

“These problems are increasingly frustrating and unacceptable as both cars have shown very good competitiveness both over one-lap and race runs.”

Ricciardo’s retirement in Bahrain makes it two DNFs from two starts this season, after a premature end to his Australian GP. The Bahrain GP, won by Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton, finished behind the safety car after both the Renaults, of Ricciardo and German teammate Nico Hulkenberg, stopped on track.

“A lot happened in the race today,” Ricciardo said.

“Initially it looked like we had competitive pace and we therefore committed to a one-stop strategy.

Smith re-signs to 2021 The All Blacks most capped number nine and second most capped Highlanders player, halfback Aaron Smith, has signed a new twoyear deal with NZR and his Super Rugby side through to 2021.

Thirty-year-old Smith made his All Blacks debut in 2012 and has been a mainstay in the national side ever since, playing 82 tests to date. He made his Highlanders debut in 2011 and has played 129 times for the side.

Smith said he was excited to confirm that his future would be in New Zealand.

“From my earliest playing days, my focus has always been about being passionate about the teams I play for and I’ve always enjoyed giving 100 percent to the teams I represent,” Smith said.

“I love representing the Highlanders and the All Blacks and playing my rugby in New Zealand gives me the chance to continue to do that.

“I’m grateful to NZ Rugby and the Highlanders organisation for all the support they’ve given me over my career and for the opportunities they have provided for myself and Teagan, going forward.”

New Zealand Rugby CEO Steve Tew said: “We’re delighted to have re-signed Aaron through to 2021.

He’s a proven world-class player, the most capped All Blacks halfback ever and an incredibly important member of the All Blacks and Highlanders.

Who is staying, going The signing of Aaron Smith adds to an impressive list of All Blacks already locked in after this year’s World Cup. And while there are questions over the immediate post-tournament plans for stars like Beauden Barrett, Brodie Retallick and Sam Whitelock — who may take up short term options overseas — they remain in the All Blacks’ schemes for the 2023 World Cup. The new All Black coach will have a decent base to work from, even if a couple of very big names will be missing initially.

Isner struggled to continue late in the second set, hampered by pain in his left foot. Federer, who won his fourth Miami title, broke Isner three times in a blazing opening set. Henry Hubert becomes a Superstar Henry Hubert added another weapon to his already impressive arsenal when winning a highly exciting running of the Superstars Championship at Addington on Friday night.

The Robert Dunn trained pacer was saved for a cold shot at the star-studded field that contested the 1980m group 2 feature.

Those tactics paid off for driver John Dunn when the four-yearold dashed along the passing lane to grab the very brave runner-up, Thefixer.

Showing he can sit off and reel in some of the best horses in New Zealand gives Henry Hubert a full repertoire to use in next month’s Easter Cup. “He seems to have a few strings to his bow now, he is really learning the art of being a racehorse,” Robert Dunn said.

“He has been the real improver for the season, it has been great that he has been able to do that and he seems to still be getting better, too.”

After being pushed four-wide at the 400m, Thefixer battled on resolutely to finish second by just half a length in a driving finish.

Hail Christian ran a big race in his first start back from an Australian campaign, when tracking Thefixer from the 400m, before peeling out to run third.

A G’s White Socks, who had a perfect run in the one-one throughout, faded in to fourth after looking the winner early in the run home.

Driver Ricky May reported to stewards his sulky sustained a flat tyre on the home bend.

The Robert Dunn stable enjoyed a brilliant night out at Addington, taking out the two-yearold trot with One Majic Kenny and the feature trot with Sundees Sun. Dunn said he was impressed with the way One Majic Kenny handled himself while horses were going off stride all around him.

“He threw his head up a couple of times in the back straight, the

pace was on and off a little bit.”

“And he started from the second line and there was carnage all around him, so it was a great run.”

Dunn hoped that One Majic Kenny would measure up the best horses in the country in the upcoming juvenile trotting features.

“He has got really high speed and he is a nice moving trotter.”

“We have just got to get him to settle a little bit better, Johnny said he was a bit keen tonight.”

The Robert and John Dunn training and driving combination sealed a brilliant night out when Sundees Sun bolted in in Friday night’s trotting free-for-all.

After leading, the four-yearold left a classy field in his wake, when clearing out to win by more than seven-lengths.

Speeding Spur was the best of the rest, running home strongly from the rear of the field to run second, in what looked a good hit-out before next week’s New Zealand Trotting Championship.

Norwich stay on top Norwich City stretched their lead at the top of the English Championship to five points and pulled seven points clear of third place after a 1-0 victory at Middlesbrough.

Onel Hernandez’s 54th-minute strike gave the Canaries a 1-0 victory in the late Saturday kick-off at the Riverside which drops Middlesbrough to eighth after a fourth straight defeat.

Norwich have now won seven matches in a row in the English second tier and have won their last five meetings with Boro without conceding a goal.

Earlier, Leeds twice came from behind to beat Millwall 3-2 and jump above Sheffield United into automatic promotion places after the Blades lost to Bristol City by the same scoreline.

Ben Thompson gave Socceroo James Meredith’s Millwall the lead before Patrick Bamford missed a penalty for Leeds.

Crotty off to Japan Ryan Crotty is the latest All Black to announce he is leaving New Zealand after the Rugby World Cup. The All Blacks and Crusaders midfielder will link up with Japanese club Kubota Spears after the tournament.

Crotty said he is looking forward to a new challenge.

“I know I’ll look back at the end of my career in New Zealand with really fond memories of the experiences I’ve had and what I’ve achieved alongside my good mates, but for now my

focus is enjoying the season ahead and helping to lead this Crusaders side one last time in 2019.

Crotty made his debut for Canterbury in 2008, and pulled on the Crusaders jersey the following year.

The 30-year-old currently has 142 Super Rugby caps to his name, and has been vice-captain of the sides that won consecutive Super Rugby titles in the 2017 and 2018 seasons.

He made his All Blacks debut against the Wallabies in Sydney in 2013, and has

earned 44 caps in the black jersey to date, scoring nine tries and being a consistent and solid performer in the All Blacks midfield.

Crusaders head coach Scott Robertson paid tribute to Crotty.

“Crotts is an outstanding leader in our backline and has delivered consistent performances in our midfield. We’re fortunate to have one more season with him and an opportunity to tick off more important milestones before he departs for Japan.”

Son of the late Stan and Cath Scott (Ross), brother and brother-in-law of John and the late Janet Scott (Dunedin), Terry and Maureen Scott (Dunedin), Helen Daisley (Dunedin), the late Robin and Judith Scott (Christchurch), Christopher Scott and Andrea Bontje (Brisbane), Helen and the late Bill Huaki (Hamilton), Allison and Gary Ford (Timaru), Rhonda Halstead (Dunedin). Top weekend on courts

Sunny skies shone down on the Ashburton Trust Tennis Centre at the weekend, ensuring that the first Mid Canterbury Seniors Championships tennis tournament was a huge success.

Almost 80 seniors – which in tennis is a player aged 35 or over – converged on the tennis centre for the newly created tournament, which featured some hard-hitting and enthralling tennis across the grades.

The top seedings lived up to the hype in the men’s A doubles,

with John Honeywell and Julian Main going through the round robin competition unbeaten, with second seeds Brett Williams and Ashburton’s Peter Leonard finishing second with two wins to their names.

In the men’s B doubles, the unseeded pairing of Karl Mitchell and Tony Moroney downed the top seeds Anthonie de Heer and Craig Tinkler in a tense final which required a super tie-break decider, 6-2 1-6 1-0 (10-7).

Seedings went to plan in the women’s A doubles, until the final, where top seeds Ritzy Gil-

lespie and Yoshie Takojima were beaten by second seeds Amy Truscott and Rebecca Turner 6-1 6-2.

In the women’s B doubles, play was split into two sections, which were topped by the pairings of Mary Dollin and Ann-Marie Halliday, and Glenys Gillanders and Sue Steven.

They then played off, with Gillanders and Steven coming back from dropping the first set to win in a third set super tie-break 106.

In the 120+ grade – where the players ages, when combined,

added up to more than 120 – group A was topped by Gavin Dunn and Bruce McDowell, while group B was topped by Roldan Orbase and Doug Sheldon.

Those two combinations then played off, and Dunn and McDowell came out on top in a tight three-setter.

On Sunday all attention turned to mixed doubles, and in the A mixed doubles grade the top seeds Steve Muir and Kerry Noble took on third seeds Alison Coats and Peter Leonard, of Ashburton, in the final.

Ricciardo issues ‘frustrating, unacceptable’

Muir and Noble took the first set 6-4, before Leonard and Coats took the second in a tie-breaker to send the match to a deciding super tie-break, which Muir and Noble won 10-2.

In the B doubles, the Ashburton duo of Robbie Bennett and Dianna Leonard went in as top seeds, and they lived up to that.

They took on second seeds Anthonie de Heer and Sarah de Heer in the final and won 6-1 6-2.

In the 120+ mixed doubles, Bill Husband and Jill Husband came out on top with three wins in the round robin draw.
