Violent and sexual crime is on the rise in Mid/South Canterbury. However the overall crime rate has dropped significantly in the region, while drug related offending has also decreased. Police yesterday released national crime statistics for the 2014 calendar year, which showed overall crime in Mid/South Canterbury dropped by 11.3 per cent. Crime also decreased nationally by a more modest 2.8 per cent. While overall crime is down, police

are concerned about a rise in violent and sexual offending. Acts intended to cause injury rose by 7.7 per cent in the region last year, while sexual assaults and related offences rose by 10.5 per cent. Acting deputy commissioner Grant Nicholls said sexual assault and related offences remained a major concern nationwide, with recorded offences rising 3.5 per cent. “We believe that historically sexual violence has been under-reported to authorities,” he said. “Police are heartened that victims of this type of crime are coming for-

ward and we want to assure them that police take all complaints of sexual violence seriously.” Mid/South Canterbury area commander Inspector Dave Gaskin declined to comment on the statistics as he did not have them at hand. The figures show robbery, extortion, and related offences had the biggest change in the region, with an increase of 38.5 per cent.
