Questions hang over cow thefts BY MICHELLE NELSON

The Mid Canterbury victims of cattle rustlers last season are still counting their losses and have questioned whether police are sufficiently resourced to deal with stock thefts. In December last year David and Jill Quigley lost 37 in-milk cows from their Mayfield farm. According to milking records the cattle were taken from the property in two mobs on consecutive nights. The recently-discovered theft of up to 500 dairy cows from a nearby farm, man-

aged by Mark and Pennie Saunders has put the spotlight back on stock thefts. The Quigleys’ cattle were worth in excess of $70,000, but that figure does not account for the loss of production and the value of next season’s calves which the cows were carrying. The majority of the stolen cattle had several more productive seasons ahead of them. The cattle were insured, but not against theft. “If they died as the result of a lightning strike on a shed or if the shed collapsed during an earthquake they would be cov-

ered,” Jill said. “At some point you have to give up counting the cost and move forward, but it still makes my blood boil; somebody has got off with this crime scot-free and we are left to pick up the tab.” The Saunders have found themselves in the same boat, and given the large number of cattle involved, Jill is “very concerned” about their ability to survive the loss financially.
