Canty meth crime up 83% BY COLIN ENGELBRECHT COLIN.E@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ

The Canterbury policing district has experienced the biggest rise in meth crimes in the last financial year than anywhere else in New Zealand. Methamphetamine crimes have almost doubled in the space of a year in the Canterbury District, recent police stats show. Offences relating to the drug have increased by 83 per cent in the year ending this June. In the 12 months to June 2015 there were 70 offences in the Canterbury District. In the year following, that number had climbed to 128.

The statistics show an increase of 58 P offences. Alarmingly, numbers of drug enforcement officers have decreased over the same period. As of June, 2012, there were 24 swornin officers dedicated to drug investigations. But at the end of June this year that number had fallen to 17, a decrease of seven officers. Labour leader Andrew Little said during a visit to the district yesterday that the current National government had failed to properly fund police. Little said there had been a national overall increase in crime of 5.5 per cent, including a 54 per cent increase in robberies.

With roots stretching back to 1875, Heartland has a proud history of supporting small-to-medium sized businesses, farms and families in Canterbury. It’s great to offer the people of Ashburton a local banking option that is 100% for New Zealand.

“The latest statistics for the past year show that burglaries are up by nearly 18 per cent, that means 10,977 more burglaries,” he said. Statistics released to the Guardian show there has been a 25 per cent increase in burglaries in the Ashburton District alone. “These figures are a disturbing reminder of National’s chronic underfunding of the police budget,” he said. “Judith Collins can no longer underfund and under-resource policing. We are now in a crisis.” If in power, Little said Labour would introduce a policy to increase current police numbers by 1000 within their first term.
