Land owners with shingle driveways are faced with being forced to seal their entrances as Ashburton District Council staff enforce council policy. Discussion on staff ’s approach to the council’s ve-
hicle crossing policy divided the council’s services delivery committee yesterday, with five voting in support and four against a recommendation before them. Roading manager Brian Fauth acknowledged the enforcement could be seen as unfair by some, but it re-
duced a safety hazard and liability risk to the council. His report recommended that staff continue using an approach which involved three different ways property holders on sealed roads would be forced to seal their driveway entrances and pay for them.
One was that while the council undertook sealed road network rehabilitation it could itself fund driveway entrance sealing on accesses to residences and buildings requiring heavy traffic access, such as milking sheds.
