Refugees will be well supported By Sue Newman

When the first refugees arrive in Ashburton in August 2020, they will be well supported and well prepared for life in a new country, said resettlement advisor Sarah Ward. She spoke to Ashburton District councillors this week about the council’s role as a refugee settlement town, saying the community should have no concerns that it would be working alone and unsupported with the new arrivals. The selection process for refugee status included a range of criteria including the need to have fled their country of origin because of persecution and risk of life. Families were interviewed face-to-face and issues looked at were – whether they posed a risk to their new country, their credibility and their health requirements, Ward said. If they passed this stage they then went through second tier interviews and were provided with information to ensure they knew what they could expect from life in New Zealand. “A lot don’t know much about New Zealand and this is when we pick up anything about resettlement where they might not be a good match for us.” If a refugee family was accepted, when they arrived in New Zealand they stayed at the Mangere Refugee Centre for about six weeks. During that time their children would start school, there would be intensive immersion in language and they would learn how life in New Zealand worked, she said. “They leave Mangere with a resettlement plan. If there are any family issues they’re captured there and we also identify their work skills and their medical issues – if there are any. Then a 12 month transition follows where they are monitored and any issues can be picked up.” Resettlement support would continue, if needed, because finding their feet in a new community was often a roller-coaster ride, Ward said.

For refugees, finding work was critical and while one-toone skill matching was not part of the resettlement programme, the areas where there were job opportunities in a district were taken into consideration, Ward said. “If specific specialist skills are

needed we can look at those such as rural skills in a rural region but language tends to be the first priority, before they can get into the sector they’ve worked in.” The ethnicity of the refugees who would be coming in 2020 had not been identified, but once that was known, the ethnicity mix already in the district would be considered. A settlement support provider would be put in place for Ashburton to ensure the best outcomes were achieved for both

the refugees and the community, she said. “It’s not ‘one size fits all’. We’ll build a steering group involving education, health, and key services, so we hit the ground running. It’s easy to focus on the challenges, but the refugee community is a really resilient community.” The council’s role was to build the foundations for a welcoming community with the support of the refugee settlement team. Whether the district’s refugees arrived to a fanfare or made a

quiet entry would be up to the council, but they wouldn’t arrive in one group of 100, their arrival would be staged, Ward said. Ashburton was accepted as a resettlement town after the government announced it would increase New Zealand’s refugee quota to 1500 in 2020. Six new towns were to added to the list and when that was announced, Mayor Donna Favel signalled Ashburton’s interest in being one of those. Towns and cities were critically assessed before they were put on the list of potential locations and then underwent more detailed assessments before they were signed off. “Factors that weighed heavily were around housing and employment and then we looked at the services available in the short-listed places, Ward said. Mayors were also involved and asked to give feedback on both the opportunities their districts offered as well as the likely risks to their communities, she said. “Mental health services, in particular, were flagged around Ashburton but with the August 2020 date it means it provides enough time to ensure resources needed are able to be met.” The perception that refugees had a high rate of mental health issues, was not correct. Largely they were very resilient people and what they needed in their new community was low level support around resettlement and community integration, Ward said. Ashburton will receive about 30 households a year under the resettlement plan. This would equate to about 100 people and was likely to include a large number of children, she said. In terms of housing, refugees were New Zealand residents as soon as they arrived and that meant they were treated the same as any other residents in terms of social housing. Not all refugees were housed in state houses however, with the majority being accommodated in private rentals.

Cloud over future of new info centre business By Sue Newman

The short term tenure offered on Ashburton’s i-SITE building could see a fledgling information service canned, its promoters say. The Ashburton Info Hub was formed by three local businessmen Tony Todd, David West and Paul Mullen. They wanted to secure a long-term lease on the East Street building, once home to Ashburton’s i-SITE, to re-establish an information service. At Thursday’s Ashburton District Council meeting, councillors all but scuttled the info hub group’s plans by agreeing to offer them only a one plus one year lease on the i-SITE building. The group had been hoping for a longer lease term. And that, combined with the council’s plans to include an information centre in its new civic centre and library in Baring Square East, made the hub group’s proposal almost untenable, Todd said. Disappointed was the only way to describe the group’s feelings, he said. The hub group approached the council in October last year requesting a five year lease and right of renewal on the building. They intended to reopen an information centre the council had closed four years earlier. “At that time, we had staff and funding ready for a ‘new look’ Info hub with expanded ideas, which would both benefit the community and visitors,” he said. “Members of the hub have worked with both the council and Experience Mid Canterbury to investigate every possible option that would be in the best interests of the community and a key fac-

tor for us is the use of the existing premises.” The group had now been delivered a double blow to its plans with both the short-term lease and the council’s plans to reintroduce its own information centre, Todd said. “It is unlikely that a commercial rental agreement could be entered into without the security of longterm tenure.” The group still had to work through this detail with the council and, until then, a final decision on its ability to deliver on what was originally outlined was up in the air. However, from anecdotal support from the commercial sector and the community, it was still the hub group’s belief that an information hub should be part of the community, he said. “We are currently in the process of firming up this support but this latest council position means this will need to be revisited with the potential for just a single year option.” The hub group expected to make an announcement on the future of its proposal once it had met with council and discussed its latest position, he said. Councillors decided to offer the hub group a one plus one lease option because timing around the redevelopment of Ashburton’s town centre had yet to be established. As part of that redevelopment the i-SITE building will be sold and removed from its East Street site. Currently information services are provided by the Ashburton Library, but this is now a confirmed component of the new civic centre and library and the council has made it clear it does not want a private operator competing for the information service.

Winter to hit with a vengeance today By Susan Sandys

Winter is announcing its arrival in Mid Canterbury today with plummeting temperatures, rain and snow. The MetService has issued a Severe Weather Watch for heavy snow, approaching warning criteria above 400 metres. There could be as much as 70 centimetres fall on Mt Hutt, and the snow level could drop as far as 300 metres above sea level, thereby reaching Methven. Meanwhile, snowmaking began in earnest for the 2019 season at Mt Hutt yesterday, after wild weather this week. It is a case of better late than never for the skifield, as it is just six days out from opening. May has been warm and generally unfavourable for snowmaking, and natural snowfalls have been few and far between. Manager James McKenzie said winds had been “horrendous” on Thursday, with gusts reaching up to 165 kilometres

per hour at the summit. At the same time it was fantastic to get a dusting of nor’west snow from the storm. “It’s not a huge amount, but it’s a base for our snowmaking, which has been running today,” he said. About 300 staff would be employed throughout the winter, and were in training as they prepared for the June 7 opening. “All the staff are here ready to go,” McKenzie said. “We are getting ready for a reasonably big storm.” There could be over 50 centimetres of snow today, and even up to 70 centimetres. “Potentially this could be the storm to start the season, we are keeping our fingers crossed it will come through.” Just how much snow would be received was hard to call at this stage, as the weather system was moving around, and it was still possible there could be very little snow.

“We could end up with a complete disappointment,” he said. Nevertheless, the cooling temperatures would keep the snowmakers churning out plenty of white gold. “It only takes four to five days of good snowmaking for us to get what we need.” Meanwhile, NIWA meteorologists have predicted above average temperatures for the next three months on the eastern coast of the South Island in their winter forecast released this week. Precipitation totals are likely to be average. Early June will feature unsettled weather and colder than average temperatures, while July could turn out to be a more settled month with an increased chance for high pressure systems. “Despite a low chance for a winter season with below average temperatures, cold snaps and frosts remain likely to occur,” they said.

Community safety given higher profile By Sue Newman

The Ashburton District is now a member of a growing network of towns and cities around New Zealand that have joined the Safe Communities network. Achieving the accreditation required to become part of that network, however, has involved hours of work by the 27 agencies involved and the rewards came on Wednesday when the official paperwork was signed off in a ceremony at the Hakatere Marae. Lesley Symington has been the key player in pulling the accreditation project together and has worked with each of the agencies involved to prepare an in-depth picture of the way safety issues are already covered, what was already being done well and where any gaps may be. One of the big issues to emerge was the high rate of falls among the elderly, Symington said and that now forms one of six key areas that will be the organisation’s focus. Also included is rural safety, road safety, harm prevention and reduction – which includes family harm and suicide, alcohol and drugs, and the natural and built environment. Evaluation was an important part of the process as the work that was being done had to be proven to make a difference, Symington said.

While achieving accreditation had involved a significant amount of work, the real work would begin now the paperwork had been completed, she said. The 27 agencies involved cover a wide range of community safety services, including crime prevention, injury prevention, alcohol

and drug-related harm, family harm, falls prevention, road safety, rural safety, emergency services, education and early intervention/prevention have worked together to seek Safe Community accreditation. A Safe Community is defined as “a community where people can go about their daily activities in an environment without fear, and without risk of harm or injury.” District councillor Liz McMillian chairs the Safe Communities steering group and said the key

strength of the initiative was that it brought together all the agencies involved in working to create a safer district. “Lesley has had to collate everything in the district that makes us a safe community and we’ve had really good input from all the agencies. We now know what we have and where the gaps are so we’re not reinventing the wheel,” she said. One of the key issues identified was the high rate of falls among the elderly, with Ashburton ranking second behind Waikanae in fall numbers. “Falls prevention will be a big thing for us and this data shows we need to do something around this,” McMillan said. An initiative the group will be working on is a safety village expo at the Ashburton A&P Show, where groups involved in safety in the community will create an information base. Fifteen groups have already signed up. The beauty of the Safe Community model was that it brought agencies together, to apply their collective “weight” to reducing injury and crime statistics over time and agencies working together had much more impact than agencies working alone, she said. “Accreditation is a great beginning to our journey towards a safer district and improved quality of living for all Ashburton District residents”.

In brief Car crashes into ditch Emergency services were called to Hinds on Thursday night after a car crashed in to a ditch. A police spokesperson said they received a report of a vehicle going into a ditch at the intersection of McDougalls and Fountaines roads about 11.10pm. St John spokesman Gerard Campbell said a female patient was treated at the scene for minor injuries and did not require transport to hospital.

Police seek owner Ashburton police are looking to locate a man who lost a number of items including a chainsaw, golf clubs and a petrol container from the back of trailer earlier this week. The man was advised to report the missing items through the police’s non-emergency number and has failed to do so. The items have since been handed in to police and they would like for the man to come forward to collect the items from the Ashburton Police Station. The Ashburton Police Station will be closed for the long weekend and will re-open on Tuesday.

A fund that has been making a difference in the lives of cashstrapped families with students at Ashburton District schools has been given a significant boost by its key funder. The Principals’ Discretionary Fund is well used by virtually every school, said Hampstead principal Peter Melrose, and it enables youngsters who would otherwise miss out to be able to access some of the extras many families take for granted.

Money for the fund is provided by the Mid South Canterbury Trust and is used to pay for things such as club membership, tuition for music or dance. It enables all children to be involved in activities, Melrose said. How much is available for each school in the Principals’ Fund varies from year to year, but can typically range between $3000 and $8000, he said. “For us it’s an extra bonus so we can do things, make things happen for the kids who might be missing out.”

The fund is one of several avenues schools have to boost options for children who may otherwise miss out, Melrose said. Individual schools disperse money from the fund as they see fit and each provides feedback annually to the Mid South Canterbury Trust This year the trust agreed to grant $228,737 to the fund, up 62 per cent for decile one to four schools and up 42 per cent for decile five schools. Smaller increases have been built in for higher decile schools.

Trust chief executive, Liz Shea, said the increased grant was in recognition of the growing number of challenges facing communities, the increasing cost of living and the importance of removing barriers to participation for children. “The community trust deeply values the knowledge and relationships held by local principals and centre managers and the needs based distribution of funds is therefore at the discretion of these community leaders,” she said. Individual students at a school,

kindergarten or early learning centre could receive assistance with costs for a range of things such as exam fees, uniforms, meals, stationery, camps or sporting or cultural activities,” Shea said. In other circumstances the funding might be used to provide additional teacher aide time or resources for one or a group of students. Kindergartens and early learning centres receive a fixed sum, the amount provided to each school is calculated using roll and decile data.

Students at Wakanui School now have the chance to enjoy more hands-on outdoor play thanks to a new play pod at the school. Teacher Cherie Livingstone introduced the idea of the play pod to the school’s community and they took up the challenge of getting the pod produced. “We have quite a lot of families within the school who work for Talleys and they donated the container and had it custom-built for purpose,” she said. The container holds a variety of things such as empty plastic barrels and plastic crates, along with other objects that students can use in creative play. “We found that a lot of the students were playing in the trees and making forts, but there wasn’t enough stuff for them to use so we came up with the idea for this,” she said. “It is just about increasing those interpersonal skills through play.” Livingstone said during her

research for the project she found that the play pods were prevalent in places like England and France, but that she had not seen any in New Zealand before. The pod has been on the school grounds for two weeks and has already been immensely popular with the students. “We have had them using it in groups from their classes and now we are going through the junior kids and up,” she said. “Even the bigger kids, like the Year 7 and 8s, are getting into it, which we didn’t really expect, and it is great to see them using their imaginations as well.” In an increasingly techbased world, the experienced teacher said it was important the students were able to do some hands-on learning. “We are an IT-based school, but it is good to have a balance with physical learning as well, like learning to tie ropes and how, if you connect two things together, how to get them to stay upright,” Livingstone said.

Long weekend equals busy roads Queen’s Birthday weekend is one of the busiest on New Zealand roads and, with thousands of Kiwis heading out on long road journeys, government safety agencies are urging drivers to take care and be prepared for heavy traffic, delays and changeable weather conditions. Police, the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) and Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC) are urging drivers to think about their and others’ safety first. “The roads will be busy,” police national manager of road policing superintendent Steve Greally said. “If you’re driving, stay alert, be patient and don’t rush – the lives of you and your passengers are worth more than arriving a few minutes earlier.” Police say they will have an active and visible presence throughout the weekend, targeting high-risk driving behaviours and focusing on highways and open roads that are popular holiday journey routes. “More than 160 people have died on our roads this year. Tragically, many of those deaths could have been prevented if everyone took these four simple and proven road safety actions that prevent serious injury and death on our

Be aware of the increased number of vehicles around you, pay extra attention on open roads and in rural areas, and adjust your speed to the driving conditions.” Drivers should also make sure their vehicle is equipped for long

That means checking tyres, wipers, indicators, rust and lights. Check your tyres for pressure and tread; check that your

wiper blades are in a good condition in case of bad weather; check your indicators are working, especially if you’re towing; check there are no signs of rust and check that your lights and headlights are in working order.” From 4pm Friday, May 31, to 6am, Tuesday, June 4, drivers detected by a safe speed camera exceeding the area’s posted speed limit by more than 4km/h will be ticketed. “As always, police’s focus is on preventing harm on our roads.”

Celebrating Samoa in dance and music Hampstead Kindergarten took a trip to the Pacific Islands on Thursday as part of their celebration of Samoan language week. During the week the youngsters have been learning to count in Samoan as well as learning a range of other Samoan words for everyday items. Beyer not attending Destiny Church’s big gay out NZME The high-profile former politician Georgina Beyer has spoken of her “deep suspicions” over Destiny Church’s attempted embrace of the rainbow community and why she will not be attending an event it is hosting. Beyer, who was invited to today’s event, said she would not allow her profile to be used by Destiny Church as an endorsement of its Saturday event to which up to 50 members of the LGBTQI+ community had been invited. “Brian Tamaki has brought a lot of hurt and damage to the rainbow community over the years. I’ve spent a lot of my time since the early 2000s, in regards to Destiny Church, railing against what they have said. “I would have to hear an apology. It would have to be incredibly profound – an expression of remorse for the damage and hurt caused to the rainbow community.” The Destiny Church event is pitched as building relationships with the rainbow community Beyer was the world’s first openly transgender mayor and MP, and was a leading figure in promoting civil union legislation in the mid-2000s, against which Destiny Church bishop Brian Tamaki organised protest marches. Speaking to media, Beyer recalled the abuse hurled at her by those among thousands of Destiny Church protesters outside Parliament.

An audio archive from the protest captures Beyer confronting the protesters, telling them: “I’m happy to stare you in the eye. Why do you hate people like us? I’m going to come and look at each and every one of you. Your hatred is totally intolerable.” Beyer revealed an encounter with the Tamakis years later which had her feeling they might have softened their views. During a period in which she was suffering chronic kidney disease, and was requiring regular dialysis, there was a tribute evening in her honour which the Tamakis attended. “He walked into the lion’s den that night,” she said. “I said ‘I’ll take that as a sincere gesture’. Why would you come to me? I destroyed their political attempts last time.” Beyer said shortly after Tamaki was in the headlines with his notorious comments about sin – including same sex relationships – causing the Christchurch earthquakes. It led her to believe any support behind the couple’s appearance at the tribute evening wasn’t genuine. Beyer said she would not be attending because of concerns as to how her attendance could be used. “I don’t want them to have any opportunity to use me to trade on. To say, ‘look, she’s coming, she was here’.” Beyer said an appearance at the event might give support to those in Destiny Church who were gay.

ed to a former Christchurch MP driving gay marriage as a cause. He said: “Leviticus says that the earth convulses under the weight of certain human sin. Massive earthquakes have already hit in Christchurch. You could have almost predicted that one.”

Family of cancer victim want changes By Michael Neilson NZME

The family of an ex-inmate and cancer sufferer who received inadequate care from Corrections are considering legal options to ensure nobody else suffers the same fate. In 2016 Vicki Letele was sent to the Auckland Region Women’s Corrections Facility, in Wiri, where she told staff she had been diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome some months before. Soon after, she developed more serious symptoms, including a burning throat, nausea, and high levels of pain. It was about six months before she was seen in person by a doctor, and shortly after she was admitted to Middlemore Hospital where she was diagnosed with gastric cancer. She died in 2017 after being released from prison on compassionate grounds following a high-profile public campaign. On Monday, a report by the Health and Disability Commission (HDC) found the Department of Corrections had failed to provide adequate care to Letele. Letele’s uncle Ula told media the report validated their view Corrections had provided a “shocking” lack of care. “If you and I are sick generally

we have access to care in 12 to 24 hours, for Vicki it took six months, and by that stage the cancer was too advanced. “Even though it was terminal, she didn’t receive the care she needed. If she had, and the cancer was picked up earlier, she may have lived longer or even be saved, but she was never given the chance.” Letele was survived by her partner Leah and their three children. Ula said they were waiting on a Human Rights Commission report into Letele’s care, and once that was finished would look at all the issues and legal options. “It is not so much a question of money, but the consequences of Corrections not being geared up to deal with these illnesses properly. “Improvements are needed – no human being should be treated with a lack of dignity and respect.” Letele was sent to prison in 2016 for 10 offences of mortgage fraud that netted $500,000. On her arrival she told staff she had been diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome some months before. Four months later Letele reported a burning throat and sore right ear, that she was unable to hold down food and that she was

very light-headed and feeling weak. She also told a nurse who saw her that sometimes she woke up with acid in her mouth. This information was relayed to the prison’s medical officer who prescribed reflux drug, Losec. A couple of weeks later the doctor, who still had not seen the patient, prescribed Letele Mylanta for heartburn and increased her dose of Losec. Another couple of weeks on, the doctor finally saw Letele. He prescribed ranitidine, which decreases stomach acid production. Letele continued to report reflux symptoms and three weeks after seeing the doctor arrived at a walk-in clinic held by the nurse. She was given different medication but returned to the clinic a couple of days later. She was seen by a different doctor who suspected an inner-ear disorder and gave her medication to treat the nausea. The next day she told a nurse she was vomiting frequently and the vomit contained black matter. She was scheduled for a review by nurses the next day. By that stage she was in a wheelchair and described her pain as “10/10”. Her oxygen saturation level was low, and her temperature was low. She was sent to the emergency

department at a public hospital where she was diagnosed with advanced gastric cancer causing near complete obstruction of the outlet to her stomach. The Parole Board originally refused to release Letele on compassionate grounds, but a campaign that began on Facebook quickly gathered steam. Twelve thousand people signed a petition calling for her release. A second application was successful in November, with the Parole Board stating she was “seriously ill and is unlikely to recover”. She was expected to live for less than five months. Letele died the following May. Following the HDC report’s release, Department of Corrections national commissioner Rachel Leota said they accepted the findings that they failed in their responsibility to ensure that Letele received appropriate health services, and that it breached the code of Health and Disability Services Consumers Rights. “On behalf of Corrections, I am sorry that we failed to deliver the appropriate standard of health services, which resulted in this woman’s unnecessary discomfort and distress. “We have been in touch with the patient’s family with a view to meeting with them face to face to

apologise for the distress caused to them.” Deputy Health and Disability Commissioner Kevin Allan referred Corrections to the Director of Proceedings, the most severe recommendation he could make. Allan was critical of the initial doctor’s lack of contact with the woman when prescribing medication, or increasing doses. But he found the second doctor breached the code by failing to take into account her history or perform an appropriate examination. Allan said the nurse’s response to reports of black vomit was seriously deficient and lacked the required urgency. He said Corrections failed in its responsibility to ensure she received services of an appropriate standard. Allan recommended the doctor, nurse and the Department of Corrections all apologise to Letele’s family and referred Corrections to the Director of Proceedings for a further review. In response, Corrections provided evidence of staff training and hired an independent nursing educator to provide nursing staff with education on commonly presenting health conditions. Corrections also commissioned an independent review.

Finally back in the final Four players who were there the last time Southern made the combined country rugby final, will again play important roles today when Southern finally gets another shot at glory. Erin Tasker reports.

on Dampney has played well over 200 games for Southern, but he still remembers his 50th game like it was yesterday. It was the 2005 Combined Country Cup final and Southern went down to Darfield 10-8 in what turned out to be their last shot at Canterbury Country rugby supremacy in well over a decade. Today, 14 years after their last final appearance, Southern will finally get another shot at the title when they travel to Omihi to take on Glenmark-Cheviot and, despite the years that have passed, Jon’s not the only member of the 2005 crew who will be climbing aboard the team bus today. The team that lined up against Darfield in the 2005 final featured a young Jon at lock, packing down in the scrum behind cousins and front-rowers Andrew and James Carr in the scrum, and an even younger Richard Fridd on the right wing. Today, Jon, James and Richard are still integral parts of the Southern squad, while Andrew is now the side’s coach. The four know all too well how hard it is to make the combined competition’s final, let alone win it, and they don’t want to let another opportunity pass the club by. Southern has technically never won the competition. Back in the days when it was just fought between Mid Canterbury and Ellesmere teams, Southern lost that 2005 final, and incredibly drew two finals in a row – 2002 with Collegiate and 2003 with Celtic. North Canterbury teams joined the competition in 2007 and since then only one Mid Canterbury team has won it – Methven in 2015, with a win over Waihora in the final. Rakaia lost the final to Waihora last year and to Southbridge the year before, while Methven also lost consecutive finals in 2010 and 2011. They have been the only appearances by Mid Canterbury sides in the final since North Canterbury joined the fray. Since 2005, Southern has only made it as far as the quarterfinals. They’ve had a couple of fifth-place finishes, but have

not managed to get past that quarterfinal stage again, until this year. They’ve played in their fair share of local Mid Canterbury Rugby Watters Cup finals in that time, but that doesn’t count for much today. Andrew said they may have made a lot of finals, but they’ve also lost a lot of finals. “It comes down to who wants it more on the day. It comes

down to hunger, if they really want to win it they will go out there and play like that,” Andrew said. For the rest of the 2005 crew, the hunger is well and truly there. “It’s all mental. We’ve got all the tools, now we’ve just got to get our heads right,” Jon said. In 2005, Southern were the favourites, having gone through the competition unbeaten. But

on that cold, muddy day at Leeston, it was Darfield who came out on top in an arm wrestle 10-8. Southern dominated the first half, but Darfield got on top in the second, with Southern’s only points being a first-half try and penalty to Matt Dunlea. This season, Southern has also been a top contender all the way through. They topped the pool A leaderboard at the end of the three-pool round-robin, only losing the one game in pool play, to Darfield. Darfield were then the team they had to get past in the quarterfinals, and they did, before coming from behind to beat Lincoln last weekend to seal their spot in the final. They played their last four games at home at the Hinds Domain, but having come second on a combined leaderboard to Glenmark-Cheviot at the end of pool play, today they find themselves on the road. Glenmark-Cheviot are threetime champions, having taken out the competition in 2008, 2009 and 2010, and they will be tough. They demolished Springston in their semi-final 49-7, and were just as dominant in their quarterfinal win over Burnham-Dunsandel-Irwell. Southern may be the underdogs, but they won’t be going down without a fight. They’ve got the talent, the depth and the experience and are more than capable of doing the job.

In club rugby, they don’t come much more experienced than Jon and James. Today, Jon has 228 games to his name for Southern – just one more than James, who has been hit hard by injury in the past couple of seasons. This season though, touch wood, James has come through unscathed, as had the majority of the squad. Jon said that their depth has been one of the keys for Southern this season. That depth and experience will be one of the big things on Southern’s side today against a Glenmark-Cheviot side they know will be disciplined and tough to beat. Andrew said it will all come down to ball retention. “At the end of the day people can’t tackle for 80 minutes, they get tired and gaps appear,” Andrew said. If Southern can look after the ball, put points on the board and come away with the trophy at the end of the day, it will be an achievement made all the more special given the fact it’s Southern’s 25th jubilee season. But that will be far from the minds of the Southern players today. “To win any final is the ultimate and you’ve got to push all that stuff aside and do it for the group, because that’s first and foremost,” Jon said. But all four agreed, a win would be the icing on top of the jubilee cake.

Connecting environmental dots Protecting and improving Mid Canterbury’s native plants and ecosystems by simply sharing information is the goal of a new trust. By Linda Clarke

ngela Cushnie has been criss-crossing the Mid Canterbury plains with her camera, excited by the new native plantings she sees on farms, in town, alongside riverbeds, irrigation ditches and on special reserves. She has turned her enthusiasm into an entity called the Kanuka Mid Canterbury Regeneration Trust and her simple aim is to help connect all local people, ideas and resources to protect and improve the environment without going broke. Cushnie says she has spent the past two years on a big learning curve and wants to create a respectful hub in the district to co-ordinate the protection and regeneration of our natural heritage. She says collaboration is important between groups, not confrontation. The trust has applied for charitable status and Cushnie’s fellow trust members are from diverse

sectors of the community: Farmer Tricia Macfarlane, lawyer Tania Paddock, lawyer and biological sciences graduate Emma Bush, lawyer Sam Ruck and accountant Steve Carr. Paddock and Bush grew up on farms in the district. With half the board under 30 the future of our district is well represented, she said. “Everyone has a role to play and something to offer when it comes to our environment.” The Kanuka trust is looking to grow a team of volunteers, young and old, friends of the trust, like-minded people and other groups, to contribute time and resources. Using connections and collaboration they aim to identify and develop regeneration projects throughout the Mid Canterbury region. Two generous sponsors have partnered with the trust, Fonterra and the Murney Trust, and they will be seeking more partnership opportunities over time. Cushnie has been doing similar work off her own bat for the past

couple of years, encouraging Hinds School to become champions of the endangered Canterbury mudfish, inviting members of the community to join her on planting days in public places and bringing fresh thinking to her role as a member of the Ashburton Water Zone Committee. While they couldn’t change the beginning when it came to the environment, they could help change the end, she told committee members this week. Cushnie’s own beginnings were in Hinds, where she spent a lot of time on farms, in river beds swimming or searching for agates, and in the back country lakes and streams on fishing trips with her dad. “The Hinds region has changed significantly over time and with that change has come challenges in terms of our environment and our water quality.” Cushnie, a writer, says she had the privilege of interviewing the highly-regarded engineer and water guru, Terry Heiler, in 2013 about the Canterbury Water Man-

agement Strategy and his role as a community member on the regional committee. “He highlighted the need to balance developing our economy with the protection and enhancement of our environment. Collaboration was key, we all need to be pulling on the same footy jersey and working together as a team.” In 2015, she researched and wrote about the Mayfield Hinds Irrigation scheme alongside journalist Anita Body and published the book Water, Farming and Families. “The story began with our pioneers, in the 1850s, and steps through the decades. It talks about land development, food rationing, war, politics, unemployment and how each new challenge impacted on the social and economic future of our ancestors.” Back then, she said, cultural values, environmental footprint and sustainability were unheard of and there was too little understanding about the need to protect our natural heritage.

“Much has changed and 160 years on we are very aware of the need to better balance our social, cultural, environmental and economic responsibilities.” Cushnie joined the Ashburton Water Zone Committee in 2017 and has been on a learning journey ever since. She’s been asking thousands of questions, met hundreds of people, read, researched and gained a better understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing Mid Canterbury. Her melting pot of ideas for the district includes government, schools, industry, landowners, youth and communities. And she wants this group to be enthusiastic and collaborative. These are early days for the trust and Cushnie is looking for projects she can nurture, facilitate, share or help in any way. “Native plants are an important part of the natural environment. The trust is about bringing together people and projects, and experiences, to regenerate plants and ecosystems.”

Exploitation earns suspension Chorus says it has suspended sub-contractor Clearvision Communications from doing work on its Ultra Fast Broadband (UFB) network, following an Employment Court ruling released yesterday. “Chorus and its contractors stand ready to assist any Clearvision technicians working on Chorus’ UFB network impacted by this decision, including with any visa transfer process,” said Chorus general manager network field and management Andrew Carroll. Last October, a Labour Inspectorate investigation found systematic abuse of labour laws among Chorus subcontractors. And an independent report commissioned by Chorus was critical of the company’s oversight, particularly as the number of vulnerable migrant workers involved in the UFB increased. “The changes we have made following the release of the independent report are already having a positive impact. There is still more work to be done, of course,

Telco continues on its modest growth trajectory with 2.6% rise Ten-year-old 2degrees, which first made it into the black in 2016, is continuing on its modest growth trajectory. The telco made a net profit of $19.6m for the 12 months to December 31, 2018, according to a Companies Office filing posted yesterday – a 2.6 per cent increase on the $19.0m net profit it booked for 2018. Revenue rose 10 per cent to $805m from the year-ago $733m. Ebitda was not included as a line item, but 2degrees says operating earnings increased to $131m from the year-ago $119m.

2degrees says a highlight was a 9 per cent increase in customers on contract, but its prepay subscribers sank 6 per cent – in part because of the closure of its 2G network. Although now profitable and growing, a decade after its launch 2degrees still trails the Big Two by some margin. Spark made Ebitda (ebitda plus investment income) of $489m on revenue of $1.75b in its half year to December. Vodafone NZ had revenue of $1.99b in the year to March 31 and adjusted ebitda of $463m,

NZX a ‘safe haven’ in escalating war By Liam Dann NZME

The New Zealand stock market has been one of the world’s best performers this year despite growing trade war tensions, said Pie Funds chief investment officer Mark Devcich. Since the trade war started early last year, Chinese stock markets have fallen close to 14 per cent, Devcich said. The US market has risen more than 5 per cent but has been hit by regular sell-offs related to trade war news. “The markets obviously think the trade war is a lot worse for China than it is for the US,” he said. US President Donald Trump wants to propel markets higher and has been using tweets to move sentiment about possible resolutions. Meanwhile, though, New Zealand’s NZX has risen 21 per cent. “It has probably been one of the best performers globally in that time, it’s really escaped the impact of the trade wars,” Devcich said. “Maybe people see New Zealand as a bit of a safe haven.” The NZX had a lot of domestically focused companies with no exposure to trade tensions. It also had a lot of defensive type utility companies and that combination may have attracted investors down here, he said. “Where we have seen it is in the currencies,” Devcich said. “The New Zealand dollar has fallen against the US in the past 12

That’s been the main impact.” Commodity prices have also been doing okay, although risks remained from falling Chinese consumer confidence. Stepping back a bit to look at the cause of the tensions, Devcich highlighted Trump’s concerns about the US trade deficit with China. “In 2018 alone there was a $420 billion trade deficit between the two countries.

“What Donald Trump can see is that if the growth continues at current rates, then China will be the biggest economy in the world.” Despite many economists considering it to be a counter-productive trade tactic, Trump has a 25 per cent tariff on $US200 billion dollars worth of Chinese imports. He has also threatened to impose them on all imports if the dispute is not resolved.

As well, he has imposed a ban on US companies selling technology to Chinese phone company Huawei. This could create a technology cold war, Devcich said. China has introduced its own tariffs, although it has less firepower because of the trade deficit. There had been a slowdown in both economies but more particularly in China, Devcich said. Chinese consumer confidence had taken a hit and growth in retail sales had fallen. “We’ve seen 10 consecutive months of retail automobile declines in China.” Factory orders in the US had also declined. The biggest risk in the US was rising inflation as the costs of tariffs get passed through to US consumers. Trump continues to say that Chinese companies pay the tariffs – they don’t. While tariffs hurt Chinese companies by making their products less competitive, it is the importer who pays the tariffs and the costs get passed on to the US consumer, Devcich said. This risk for markets is that rising inflation will force the US Federal Reserve to lift interest rates – which would cause stock markets to fall. “The number one concern for markets now was the resolution of the trade war,” he said. “It was getting close a couple of months ago but now it is looking at least six to 12 months away.”

porting legends are plentiful in the Mid Canterbury region and we’re lucky we now have an outlet in which to recognise them through the Mid Canterbury Sporting Legends at the annual sports awards. Those spots though, are generally saved for those who perform at the most elite of levels, men and women who represent their country. Who win medals at the Olympics and Commonwealth Games and wear the silver fern with pride. But what about those who don’t reach that pinnacle, but still make a contribution to their chosen field that is almost unparalleled by any other? There’s plenty of them out there, but only a few shoot to a

status that has them known by almost everyone in the street. Southern rugby player, Jon Dampney, is one of those people. He’s lived and breathed rugby for longer than anyone cares to probably remember. He’s worn the red, white and blue of Southern rugby at senior level more than 200 times, been a frequent member and leader of the Mid Canterbury Heartland

side and earned recognition as a member of the New Zealand Heartland side. Almost 14 years ago, I was a sports reporter at the Ashburton Guardian in my early journalism days, I can now admit to not knowing many of the faces in our local senior rugby competition, but Jon Dampney was one I picked out pretty quick. He was a Mid Canterbury representative at that time and I remember travelling to Oamaru one day to watch them play North Otago for the Hanan Shield, we hadn’t won it for a number of years and Dampney was a key figure in ending that drought. When I returned to this office over 10 years later, it came as no

surprise to see him still plying his trade and doing it for the sport of rugby. His legs might not be quite as quick as they once were, but the skill set is still there, and the respect that comes with experience such as his. You hear little youngsters on the sideline at rugby on a Saturday speak in awe as he runs past them and rival teams know exactly who he is, and what he can do, so treat him with the utmost caution. But there’s been a glowing omission in Dampney’s career, he’s won the Watters Cup, he’s won the Meads Cup too, but he hasn’t won a Combined Country Rugby final but today he gets the opportunity with his South-

ern team mates and victory would be the most fitting result to cap off all his years of service to the club and to the sport. He won’t like being in the limelight too much, that’s not his style. He’s a team man through and through and will bleed for his jersey if he has to and he’d rather just remain his quiet and unassuming self. But the truth is that Dampney has been such a part of rugby in this region for such a long time that if he, and his team mates, can achieve victory in one of the toughest rugby competitions on the mainland – he deserves to be hoisted onto shoulders and carried off like a hero.

know I should know better being a cynical old hack, but I can’t help feeling disillusioned this week with the state of our politicians. All of them. What a disappointing bunch of misfits. I had high hopes when Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern talked about being a better, kinder government and being open, honest and transparent. I hoped for a nanosecond that that may actually be the case. More fool me. It isn’t. Instead, we have lies, accusations, bullies, dishonesty, no transparency at all, and no accountability. To be fair, National hasn’t been much better. No they may not have acted illegally in accessing Treasury documents, but what would have been a morally better avenue for them would’ve been to take the high road and say look we’ve managed to very easily breach your confidential secure files, we won’t release what we’ve found, but just know it’s not safe, and easily accessible. They could’ve exposed Treasury’s incompetence, without

Jacinda Ardern exposing the detail. Instead they waved around their ill-gotten gains and teased the public with how they got it. Lame. Speaking of the Treasury though, what a bunch of muppets. How incompetent are they? And that’s before we get to the Deputy Prime Minister of this country and his merry sidekick who were claiming they knew exactly what had happened – when they clearly didn’t have a clue. It didn’t stop them making accusations anyway, and Shane Jones going so far as to say someone needed their head

lopped off with a taiaha. What? How’s that being a kinder, better government and doing things differently? Who even talks like that in 2019? There were calls for apologies all round but do you know who really needs an apology? We, the voters. For being represented by such a petty bunch of squabbling tyre-kickers. And underlying all of this, the part that really grinds my gears, is the fact the biggest bully of them all, Speaker Trevor Mallard, has seemingly had his own scandalous behaviour kicked

under the carpet and usurped by all this. It feels wrong to me that he gets off the hook. Where is the accountability? This man cried rape, ran a man out of work over it, killed that man’s reputation, conducted the whole thing inexplicably through the media in a very public forum – and has now retreated along with the PM claiming it “shouldn’t be played out in the media”. Why then did he air it to the media in the first place? And how does he get to just go to ground after arguably wrecking someone’s life? This kind of double standard does not smack of an honest, transparent, accountable, and kind government at all. All I see are bullies and incompetents being let off the hook. Somebody wake me when the transparency, honesty and kindness starts. hat we have witnessed this week is the worst week of this Government’s term - and by quite some margin. They have had their individual bouts of ineptitude. The Clare Curran fiasco, the ongoing disaster that is KiwiBuild, the Meka Whaitiri scandal – but what made this week record-breaking was not just the cock-ups and shambles, but the cock-ups and shambles in a week that should really have shone bright for them. Budget week is the crowning glory outside of an election victory, Budget week is the cream on the cake of the fiscal year. It’s the facts, the figures, the intention, the outlook, the projection, the forecasting of all you are and what you stand for as a government. It’s your annual parade of fiscal and political brilliance. It is your crowning glory, because it’s got money, handouts and results – and a summation of all the reasons you are in government.

And yet they took this week and blew it up. The KiwiBuild confession, given the size of it, was remarkable in itself, but was the least of their problems. Given we already had been well versed on what a mess it is, adding mess on top of the mess seemed by Thursday to have been just another chapter in the saddest and most incompetent of policy attempts in many a year. They now confess that by the time their first (and possibly last) term of government comes staggering to the finish line that they will have built 1600 houses – not the 16,000 they said. It’s laid bare, yet again, the cold hard truth about their ability to oversell an idea, and under-deliver it. Then came the Mallard scandal. If the man Barry Soper talked to is the same bloke Mallard called a rapist, and if the man’s story matches with the investigations held, in other words the complaints were unsubstantiated, then Mallard should have quit, or been sacked, or failed

a vote of no confidence – or all three. He is a bully, and don’t get me started on this Government’s treatment of unsubstantiated bullying allegations against Diane Maxwell, the Retirement Commissioner. Here is where this Government is coming to pieces in the eyes of so many. This is the Government that has bent over backwards to talk about kindness, mental wellbeing and inclusiveness. This is the most open, honest and transparent government we have ever seen – and yet this week has shown that between Mallard, Grant Robertson, and Winston Peters they are nothing of the sort. Mallard, in further irony, got bumped out of the headlines because along came Treasury Secretary Gabriel Makhlouf, and his bumbling mates Robertson and Peters yelling hack, hack, hack. Not only did they have no clue about technology, they, like Mallard, took a bad situation and, in a play straight out of the Mallard ‘bullying tips for all MPs’ book,

dumped all over the National Party. Only to have it blow up in their face. And do we see apologies? Of course we don’t, that’s not what bullies do. For those of us who aspire for this country to be great, this is the frustration. This lot are hopeless, they’re amateurish, they’re beginners in a professional game. They are taking this country, this economy and its hopes and aspirations, and butchering them. And to make it worse, they’re obfuscating, stalling, blustering, blundering, and generally behaving appallingly. And it’s all come to a catastrophic, shambolic head this week. And they’re only halfway through their term. From the minute Southern step off the team bus in Omihi today, they need to be in the zone. They may have proven themselves to be one of the top two teams in this year’s combined country rugby competition, but when they run out onto the field in the final today against Glenmark-Cheviot, what’s happened so far this season won’t mean a lot. It all comes down to today. It comes down to who wants it more, and you’d be hard pressed to find a team that wants it more than the Andrew Carr-coached Southern side. Technically, they’ve never won it. They’ve never got their hands on the most sought after prize in Canterbury Country rugby. To change that, they’ll have to get past a bunch of Glenmark-Cheviot players who know how to win it. They’ve done it three times – in 2008, 2009 and 2010 – and Carr said although he hasn’t seen them play this season, he’s been told they play a similar style to Southern. Whether that’s a good thing, or a bad thing, remains to be seen. Another unknown is how much of an impact today’s forecast bad weather will have on the game. One thing that is known though, is that if Southern want to get back on that bus at the end of today with the Luisetti Seeds Cup in their possession, they’ll have to step it up a notch. “We’ve just got to try and do what we do, and try and do it better,” Carr said. “And be more clinical and more organised, and communicate well on the paddock, and I think if we do those things, we will go well.” Southern are traditionally one of the strongest senior club sides, and while they’ve won a few Mid Canterbury Watters Cup crowns,

They’ve made three finals; losing one and drawing the other two, but they haven’t made a final since the Mid Canterbury and Ellesmere competition expanded to take in North Canterbury sides in 2007. This year, Southern know they’ve got the side capable of taking it out but, for it to happen their heads need to be in the right space. They’re an experienced team, with a couple of players who have played well in excess of 200 games for the club in the form of Jon Dampney and James Carr, and while the Eric Duff captained

side is known for its strength in the forwards, their backs are also more than capable of producing some magical moments. There may not be any lack of finals experience within Southern’s ranks, but most of that experience has come from the Mid Canterbury competition. “We know how it feels to lose and it hurts, and we know how to win, and it’s a good feeling,” Carr said. “We are going up there to do our best, and hopefully our best is good enough.” Despite the game being almost as far from home as it could possibly be for Southern, they’re likely to be helped along by a sea of red,

blue and white supporters. Carr said he understands multiple buses are heading up, and the club’s Colts are playing at 10am this morning in Hinds to ensure they can get up there, and their senior Bs have moved their game against Allenton to Monday afternoon. Carr and his team are hopeful they’ll put on a performance that will give them something to cheer about. “It will be who controls the ball the best, who is mentally up for it, and whose defence is the strongest,” Carr said. The last time Southern made a final in 2005, Carr was on the field as a prop, and it’s a similar story

United A overcame some early nerves to ensure their return to Mid Canterbury Netball’s premier one grade on Thursday night, was a winning one. A week after finishing round one of the premier two grade unbeaten and earning promotion to the grade they were relegated from in 2018, United A took on Mt Somers and came away with a 32-18 win. Mt Somers started the stronger of the two, but once United A’s nerves settled they started climbing into the match and led 10-5 by the end of the first quarter. United A’s stand-in coach Karla Newlands said that helped lift the team’s confidence. Also helping United A was Olivia McLennan’s once again impeccable shooting record, landing 23 from 23 in the match, while down the other end of the court goal keep Anna Edzes was also in fine form, getting her hand to 17 tips and intercepts. United A won each quarter and Newlands said that was something they had talked about leading in their return to premier one, being competitive for the whole game. “We still have plenty to work on but it was great to start the move into prem one with a win,” Newlands said. Also picking up a win to start round two, were defending champions Celtic A, who, despite missing some of their regulars, came away with a 34-17 win over the team they beat in last year’s final, Methven A. An injury to shooter Amelia McKnight in the opening minute meant Methven A’s start wasn’t the best and while McKnight carried on, the Celtic defensive duo of Anna Holland and Julia McLeod made life tough for them, with

McLeod’s defence in the midcourt also top-notch. Celtic led 8-3 at the end of the first quarter and had extended their lead to 17-8, and while the third quarter was much more even and much more what people had probably been expecting, Celtic were still well in control at 24-15 heading into the final quarter. By full time, the margin was 17 and Celtic A were back where they wanted to be after their unbeaten run from the past couple of sea-

sons almost came to an end at the hands of College A last week. College A drew with Celtic A in their final game of round one, and this week’s game against Hampstead A followed a similar pattern for the first three quarters, although, unlike last week where it was the College side that always seemed to have the slight edge, this time it was Hampstead. A tight first quarter finished 8-all and at half time Hampstead led by one 18-17, and by three-quarter

time they had the lead by two, 2725. The fourth quarter was College A’s though, as they fought back to claim the win 38-35. Meanwhile, round two of premier two started with the newly relegated Celtic B side taking on one of the two teams that had been in the running to take their place in premier one last week, Southern A. Southern A came out on top in that one, winning 34-31, while the

two Hampstead sides now featuring in the grade both picked up losses. Hampstead B took on Ashburton College B and lost 31-23, while Hampstead C lost their first game of premier two 43-26 to Methven B. Hampstead C were the team promoted from Saturday afternoon netball to premier two, taking the place of the bottom team from premier two at the end of round one, Celtic C.

College girls pick up a win, but boys not so lucky An improved effort across the court resulted in win for Ashburton College’s senior girls basketballers on Tuesday night, but things didn’t go so well for the senior boys. Ashburton College’s boys were dwarfed by St Thomas in their Thomson Trophy Canterbury secondary schools’ competition clash, but for the first quarter in Christchurch both teams slugged it out, going basket for basket. College combined the break with some good early perimeter shooting, but Fotu Hala got into early foul trouble and spent half of the quarter on the bench. College kept the intensity up though and held a slender 20– 18 lead at the first break, but St Thomas began to break down the College defence in the second quarter, driving well and causing College to foul. St Thomas got out to a 52–40

lead ahead of a helter-skelter third quarter where intensity increased, and Hala fired up, strong on the drive and nailing three-pointers. But just as the Ashburton boys drew closer, St Thomas got themselves back into the game, muscling in under the hoop to score through their big men and extending their lead to 81–63. College attacked hard in the fourth and Quinn Ritchie offered a glimmer of hope, hitting four three pointers, but St Thomas had a reply for anything. Hala fouling out made life

more difficult, but a tiring College battled until the final whistle going down 107–84. Coach Brian Kerr said the scoreline didn’t reflect what a good game it was. “We were seriously out-sized and St Thomas have some pretty good personnel playing,” Kerr said. College were also missing players through injury and illness and while Kerr said that wouldn’t have changed the result, but the extra manpower on the bench would have helped. Ritchie’s fired up fourth quar-

ter saw him finish with 24 points (6 – 3 pointers), while Hala also finished with 24 points, and Sam Pearce was strong defensively and managed to nab 16 points in a solid display. “The positive is that each team member contributed. Pasi Hala worked hard on the boards and managed to get himself into some good scoring spots. Kalen Tait played well with his first real taste at this level, his increasing confidence gained through the local Wednesday night competition starting to shine through,” Kerr said. Thomas Patterson, Liam Sullivan and Riley Sa all put in big defensive efforts, too. “They gave it everything and as a coach you can’t ask for any more.” Meanwhile, in the Whelan Trophy, the Ashburton College senior girls were on the new courts at Avonside Girls’ High School

and came away with a 57-50 win. Coach Randall Anderson said his side stepped it up a couple of notches when it came to defence compared to their the first two games, and that led to a much improved offensive set. “Special mention should go to Ella Pearson and Julie Mushonga for their intensive on ball defence which forced several turn overs,” Anderson said. Some great passing to the open player allowed for a relatively even spread of scoring across the court, with Sophie Adams leading the scoring with 22, Eilish Pierce dropping nine and Tessa Thompson adding six. The Ashburton girls had to see off a late fight back from the young Avonside team, with a 19 point lead whittled down to just three at one stage, but they held their composure in front of a large and loud crowd, Anderson said.

Wins sealed in the final quarter Strong finishes helped College and Team Donkey to wins in Wednesday night’s round of the Basketball Mid Canterbury men’s A grade competition at the Oxford Street stadium. Team Donkey’s opposition, Farmers Corner, started well and found the net early with a controlled offensive display while Team Donkey struggled to get theirs going, but three three-pointers from Pip Johnston kept them in the game. Farmers Corner took a healthy 25–16 lead into the second quarter before Team Donkey began to string together some better plays and although they were still 10 points down at the break, momentum appeared to have swung. The third quarter seemed to validate that as Team Donkey applied more defensive pressure and were able to secure their defensive boards whilst unleashing their fast break. They ended the quarter on a roll leading 57–51. The fourth quarter was hard fought with Team Donkey able to extend their lead early on with Farmers Corner trying hard to fight back, but Team Donkey controlled the last four minutes well and took out the game 82-75. For Team Donkey, Johnston top-scored with 34 points and was particularly strong on the drive, finding some form from the arc with six three-pointers, while Josh Lowe finished with 14 points and Cam Butler hit 10 points. For Farmers Corner, Marvin Agacer shot well with 24 points, while Randy Buenafe scored 21 and Ramil Ilumin 11. The defining part of the game was Team Donkey outscoring Farmers Corner 22–8 in the third quarter and changing the game’s momentum. The night’s second game pitted College against Newlands Gannets, with the young school side finishing strong and taking the win. Both teams shot well from the outside especially Riley Sa, who

hit three three-pointers, but neither team were really able to gain any ascendancy, with Newlands taking a 29-28 lead at the end of the first. The second quarter was also tight as Newlands were able to break on the young College team and extend their lead slightly, only for College to come back hard to take the lead at the halftime break 51–50. In the third quarter College employed a man-to-man defence in an effort to increase the tempo of the game and while that worked to a degree, Newlands were still able to run the ball back at College and the third quarter ended in a stalemate at 68-all. College dropped their first five baskets, including a couple of three-pointers, to start the fourth and create a break in the score. They hustled the tiring Newlands team and were able to finish the game strongly and take out a 99– 85 victory. For College Fotu Hala led the way with 28 points and some aggressive drives to the basket. He was well supported by Quinn Ritchie on 22 points while Riley Sa netted 12 points and Sam Pearce 11. For Newlands, Jason Greig top scored with 27 points and worked hard on the boards, while Marc Juntilla continued his good allround form with 27 points, and a pleasing aspect was Liam O’Connor finding good shooting form, adding 24 points and forming a good partnership with Juntilla on the break. College chose to play a zone defence to try and nullify the seven-foot Jason Greig in the Newlands team but it wasn’t as effective as hoped, and the change to man-to-man lifted the College team. But it was College’s superior fitness in the fourth quarter and their fast break that took the game away from a Newlands team that was missing three players, including two starting players.

Big weekend for representative sides Testing her shooting skills before heading away to represent Mid Canterbury this weekend is Emma Hill. Hill is part of the Mid Canterbury Under-17 team which has headed to Christchurch for the first tournament of their season this long weekend, while Mid Canterbury’s under-15 A and B sides are in Nelson for a one-off three-day tournament. There’s less than 24 hours until their opening game of the Cricket World Cup, and the Black Caps are still uncertain as to who will be spearheading their starting XI. Black Caps coach Gary Stead wasn’t ready to commit to naming his opening batsmen and opening bowling partnerships at training in Cardiff yesterday, with injury niggles complicating an already tricky process before he selects his side to play Sri Lanka. Two spots have been up for grabs all summer, with Henry Nicholls and Colin Munro vying to be Martin Guptill’s partner to open the batting, while Matt Henry and Tim Southee have been battling to share the new ball with Trent Boult. Despite having yet to truly fire in the opening role, Nicholls surely has the edge over Munro, whose selection would be a rather bold call, considering

he has made just one 50 in his last 17 innings. The other Henry – Matt – looked to be the frontrunner to open the bowling after some strong displays against India and Bangladesh, but an absolute tonking (2-107 from nine overs) by the West Indies, and a strong resurgence from Southee, may have turned the tables. Stead acknowledged that the warm-up matches had made those calls clearer, but said he was still unable to make a definitive decision. “We’ve got a few little niggles in the camp which we’re monitoring at the moment and that may have a bearing on what we go with,” Stead explained. Those niggles include Munro, who has a bruised foot, though still managed to bat and bowl at training. It’s hardly the walking wounded, with most players getting through a decent workload out in the middle at Sophia Gardens, but there was enough

concern for Stead to err on the side of caution when discussing his options. “At all times you’ve got things people are managing, we have got a couple of other [niggles] but I hope it’s not going to be [injuries] ruling them out – it’s just too early to say. “I think it’s just that factor of coming back together again and little things that just get picked up as you start lifting that intensity.” Despite the few worries emerging, Stead was still pleased about how things were tracking, and has no trepidation heading into the tournament. “We had a couple of really great warm-up games, it was good to get the boys back together and playing again. “I was delighted with both workouts, we were put under pressure, and we had a good outing against India first up. All in all, I think confidence levels are high going into the World Cup.”

Malta Altus withdraws challenge for 36th America’s Cup NZME The America’s Cup will have at least one fewer challenge than expected after the withdrawal of Malta Altus. What was meant to be a historic moment for sailing in Malta, their first ever challenge for the Auld Mug, they have officially pulled

the plug on the operation. “This is a disappointing outcome.” Team New Zealand boss Grant Dalton said in a statement. “The Malta Altus Challenge had a strong foundation with some highly experienced and reputable America’s Cup personnel linked to the team. “So, for them to pull out is not

just a shame for the event but also for those people that have worked so hard trying to get this challenge to the start line. We hope they will continue to build on their foundation over the next 18 months with a view to the future and challenging for the 37th America’s Cup.” Malta Altus were one of three teams rumoured to be struggling

with the financial side of putting their challenge together earlier this year. Along with the two other late entries in Stars and Stripes Team USA and DutchSail, the Maltese challenge was said to be on shaky ground early on in their preparations. Stars and Stripes Team USA and DutchSail remain involved to this

point, and have until July 1 to confirm their respective challenges. The Times of Malta reported in February that Malta Altus team principal Pasquale Cataldi had been unable to tie up a support agreement with the government that would help the Italian entrepreneur be in a position to mount a serious challenge in 2021.

A day of mixed emotions By Matt Markham

’m heading up the road to Addington this morning with mixed emotions. On the positive side, the racing purist in me is excited about one of the biggest days of the year in racing circles while on the negative side, the Mid Canterbury lad in me is disappointed that it’s not happening here. Then again, with the predicted weather perhaps it may be a godsend that we’re not at the Ashburton Racecourse today. Over a year ago we discovered that the Harness Jewels, which were born and took their first step here in Ashburton were being taken from us, handed off to big brother up the road Addington like a parent stripping the younger child of something special and passing it onto the older sibling. I was always okay with the prospect of the Jewels going somewhere else, but my hopes were that it would continue to keep its grassroots feel and not become another flash in the pan race day at Canterbury’s major racing venue. And that’s my fear. I fear that I’ll go to Addington today and it will feel like Cup Day, albeit a wee bit colder, with all the bells and whistles laid out

among the concrete jungle and the unique feel that made the Jewels what it was will be lost among the familiar feels of any other day at the track. I don’t wish bad luck on the Addington team either, they’ve put a power of work into getting this event off the ground and should be proud of their efforts because it’s no easy task. But bitter is a word I’m happy to say. But I’m also going to keep a keen eye out for those same tired feelings that Harness Racing New Zealand used to quantify removing the Jewels from Ashburton and that’s more about the concept than whoever is hosting it. After more than a decade of the day, perhaps it’s getting a little too stale. More of the same, with the same peo-

ple winning and the drama and mystique fastly evaporating. Moments like GTH Aveross winning at close to $100 to one, or Geoff and Jude Knight taking over the birdcage all the way from Oamakau are becoming less and less likely. And that’s a shame, because the model is exceptionally good. It just needs a bit of a revamp to be brought forward once more. If you’re heading to Addington today, enjoy it. If you’re at the MSA watching on with the crowd of locals, enjoy that too. Or if you’re boycotting the whole thing, I know there are some, then enjoy whatever it is that you do. It as after all, just another race day.

Hopeful, but not confident By Matt Markham

He’s far more hopeful than he is confident, but Ashburton trainer Brent White knows that if everything falls into place he could be heading home from today’s Harness Jewels at Addington with two very positive results next to his name. The former South Canterbury trainer, who is now based in Ashburton, has two Jewels chances today; One Apollo and Cranbourne, neither of whom are setting the bookies’ desk alight but, on natural ability, are more than capable of both being competitive. But that doesn’t necessarily mean winning. “It’s hard to see that happening,” White said yesterday. “Not because I don’t think they’re good enough to be really competitive, they are – but what they’re up against makes it pretty hard to think they could be winning chances.” White’s main hopes for the day are on three-year-old trotter, One Apollo.

PHOTO SUPPLIED He’s been consistently good all season, and clocked some impressive timings in his last start third behind rival for today, Get Lucky. “His sectionals were great and he covered a lot more ground than anything else, I thought it was a very good performance. “He’s been good all season though and deserves his spot in the field, I’m certain that at his

best he’d be right up there with most of them.” But if there is a concern, it’s the wide barrier draw of eight which will make things difficult. “It’s only a bad draw after the race, I’m going to go with that. “You can’t do anything about it, but try and make it work for you and, if we can settle in a handy spot, then who knows, I think he’ll

show a lot up the straight, he’s got real speed.” The 3YO Ruby is a star-studded affair with everyone seemingly set to try and fend off the brilliant Enhance Your Calm but there’s also plenty of interest in what Australian raider, All Cashed Up will produce. White’s second runner for the day is two-year-old pacer Cranbourne. An emphatic winner on debut he’s been out of sorts since, but there’s an air of confidence about White’s voice as he speaks about the promising pacer. “His last run was horrible, I was really disappointed. “But his bloods were right out after the race, so we’ve worked away on him and he’s been great this week, I’m really happy with where he’s at. “They all seem to be chasing the All Stars horses in that race, so if he could finish in the top five I’d be going home very happy.” Cranbourne is raced by a couple of Mid Canterbury locals, Ross McCutcheon and Neale Pierce along with Temuka’s Barry Phillips and Ross Smith.

Purdon declares All Stars runners ready NZME This is the story the bookies don’t want to read. Because the odds setters know there will be an avalanche of money for the All Stars runners at the Harness Jewels and the bad news is champion trainer Mark Purdon couldn’t be happier with his team. The All Stars have eight of the nine favourites for the $1,275,000 mega meeting at Addington and, as always, they will bet the centre of the multi bets which are so popular on Jewels day. And in good news for favourite punters, after a few setbacks late last week, when Oscar Bonavena just missed a Jewels start and then several of the All Stars horse reacted badly to a worming paste,

Purdon couldn’t be happier going into today. “The worming paste was just a reaction thing and not a big deal and the horses are all well over that,” said Purdon. “The ones who raced last Friday (Turn It Up, Ashley Locaz, Elle Mac and Funatthebeach) weren’t treated with it while we took a lot of the other Jewels runners into Addington on Wednesday for their final fast work. “I couldn’t fault any of them. It is getting late in the season and some horses get tired but I couldn’t be happier with where the team is at.” Purdon thinks Elle Mac (mares) and Turn It Up (boys) will win their four-year-old pacing races but he is not as confident with

Winterfell and King’s Landing in the trot. “Winterfell is back to his best but the way Sundees Son won the two big races in Auckland if he behaves himself he might be too good for us, especially from the draws.” The two-year-old pacing races also look the All Stars to dominate with One Change and Sweet On Me deserved favourites. “The way the draws have worked out I think One Change will lead and that will make it really hard on (stablemate) Flying Even Bettor while Sweet On Me’s work on Wednesday was very good. But while the stable has $2.40 favourite Tailored Elegance in the juvenile trot Purdon warns she faces a big task. “She is very professional and a

lovely filly but there are some nice horses in there,” says Purdon. The three-year-old raises the most interesting tactical battles for the All Stars, with none of their three favourites guaranteed the lead. Princess Tiffany looks to be in a two-horse race with arch rival Belle Of Montana and Purdon is positively beaming about his filly. And Purdon saves some of his highest post-workout praise for Jesse Duke, who is the only group one winner in the three-year-old male pace. “He worked very well on Wednesday so he is in the right place,” he says. “That could make it a tricky race but I am confident he (Jesse Duke) is in the right form to try that.”

Mid Canterbury’s most decorated harness racing identity isn’t expecting to add any more glitter today at the Harness Jewels, but when it comes to Ricky May you just never know what might happen. The legendary horseman, who is fast closing in on becoming just the third harness racing driver to reach 3000 career wins has what could best be described as a mixed bag of drives on the big day and in his own summation said that if he could pick up a couple of placings it would be a good day. “It’s going to be tough, we’re all up against it,” he said. Of his five drives, May expected the Mark Jones trained twoyear-old filly Stylish Memphis to be one of his better chances, although she’s heading into the unknown. “I don’t think people realise just how good she is, and how good she’s going to be. “She’ll run a good race, I just hope we don’t have to do too much work out of the gate. “If we don’t, then I think she’ll be fine.” The Greg and Nina Hope trained Midnight Dash is May’s other leading hope for the day although his chances rest firmly on his manners as opposed to his ability. “I think he’s got the speed to mix it with them, he’s shown me that, but we just need to keep him down and trotting.” May also drives Skippy’s Delight and Flying Mister Ideal for his good mate Brendon Hill and takes the reins on One Over Da Skye for the Hope barn later in the day.

New Zealand beaten by Uruguay NZME The New Zealand U-20 men will meet Colombia in the Round of 16 at the FIFA U-20 World Cup after signing off on pool play with a 2-0 defeat to Uruguay in Poland yesterday. Going into the final Group C clash, history was beckoning for New Zealand as no team from these shores had ever progressed to the knockout stages of a FIFA tournament in pole position. Des Buckingham’s side had put themselves on the verge of finishing top with back-to-back wins – the first time that had been achieved by a Kiwi side at an U-20 World Cup – but couldn’t complete the job against the classy South Americans. With their respective passages to the Round of 16 already secured, both sides took the opportunity to freshen their starting line-ups as Buckingham made

with an injury. That made it a disrupted start for New Zealand and Uruguay took full advantage by dominating the opening exchanges. They shaded the possession stakes and enjoyed the better of the openings before taking the lead in the 40th minute, Darwin Nunez firing in at the near post as New Zealand conceded their first goal of the tournament. Goalkeeper Cameron Brown was one of the many players brought into the side and provided a safe pair of hands throughout, making several saves before finally being beaten with one of the last kicks of the game. With New Zealand pressing forward to find an equaliser, Uruguay broke on the counter for Brian Rodriguez to slot home and ensure first place in the group for his team. It was cruel on the Kiwis, who had been enjoying one of their best periods of the match and

very nearly got themselves on level terms just a few moments earlier. The Oceania champions will aim to make the most of such situations in taking on another South American opponent in the Round of 16 on Monday morning at 6.30am (NZT). Colombia have a similar record to New Zealand after finishing second in Group A with two wins and a loss. “It was disappointing not to get the win but the boys have done extremely well and I’m very proud of them,” Bell said. “We’re the first New Zealand team to win two games at this World Cup and I think we put a great shift in today. It was unlucky but that’s football sometimes,” he added. “We have to move on now and obviously the next game is extremely important for us so we’re going to be fully-focused on that.”

The evolution of booze and rugby in a new era By Phil Gifford

ooze and rugby in New Zealand used to be conjoined twins. The first time sponsors’ labels went on the All Black playing uniform was in 1993. Steinlager had a logo on the shorts, and the next year the beer moved up. In ’94 it was the silver fern over the left breast on the jersey, and Steinlager over the right. Beer firms wrestled over pouring rights in clubs, when on Saturday afternoons the busiest bar in many towns and suburbs was at the local footy club. But that was then, and this is now, and the old phrase of “boozy rugby players” trotted out by social media critics whenever claims emerge of misbehaviour by professional players, from the Chiefs’ strippergate to the Crusaders in South Africa, is an ingrained, knee-jerk reaction that grows less true by the year. Today’s professional players, from All Black to super rugby to Mitre 10 Cup level, are virtually teetotallers compared to the people who came before them. Not much more than a decade ago that’s a paragraph that would have been impossible to write with any integrity, and impossible to read and keep a straight face. But the plain fact is, as Rob Nichol, the head of the Professional Players’ Association told me this week, “Professional players now don’t drink during a campaign because they can’t afford the damage to their reputation. There are too many eyes, and too many cellphones, and today they’re basically working. Whatever your job, you don’t drink at work.” In a startlingly frank section of his 2015 biography, Jerome Kaino talks about how he tried to buck that idea early in his career, drinking with mates and then sometimes turning up hungover for training at the Blues.

“I felt the drinking went along with my success, and was a perk of being an All Black. I was in my own little bubble, thinking that what I was doing was normal,” he says. A drink-driving conviction in 2008 snapped him back to reality. So did a talk with the All Black coaches when the team assembled in Wellington. Kaino apologised, and said if he was given the chance he’d pay them back with performances. Head coach Graham Henry replied, “Jerome, we don’t want to be paid back. But there are a lot of guys in New Zealand rugby who would kill for that shirt we’ve given you. They’re the guys you have to pay back.” It’s instructive that Kaino’s major fall from grace (he’d been out drinking until 5am then was driving with a mate on Dominion Road when he rear-ended a car that had stopped at a pedestrian crossing) came during a week off during the 2008 Tri Nations series. Rob Nichol says the players’ association has support in place with counselling for those struggling with alcohol, just as they do with any addiction, or mental health issues. Among the people Kaino says he was grateful to for their support, as he got his drinking under control, are the players’ association and the NZRU. It’s thankfully a far cry from the dark days of one of the saddest stories in rugby, the secret banning of All Black Ron Rangi in 1966, which would see him then struggle with alcohol for the rest of his life, until he died, aged just 47, in 1988. Rangi, rugby historian Paul Neazor established, was a teetotaller before he made the New Zealand Maori team for a tour of Fiji in 1964, and then the All Blacks in 1965. From then on he was on the road to alcoholism. Rangi was banned from the All Blacks in ’66 at a closed meeting of

Dan Carter celebrates the All Blacks World Cup win at Twickenham. the NZRU after it was claimed he had fled an after-match function at the Papakura military base with a bottle of whisky. Journalist Bob Howitt broke the story, and eventually the ban was withdrawn. But the damage to Rangi had been done. The hypocrisy of the action by the NZRU then staggers the mind. In the 1960s and 1970s, Sunday on an All Black tour was an off limits day for training, because the party after the Saturday game into the early hours of the next morning was a rite that was always observed. When the game was amateur, drinking was sometimes used as the glue to bind a team. In 1988, after a scratchy 19-all draw with Australia in Brisbane, coach Alex Wyllie told his players to have their training gear with them on the plane when they flew to Sydney. “We’ll have training as soon as we get off, and you won’t have time to get it out of your suitcases.” Ferried by bus to a club ground in Terrogal they nervously changed, when Wyllie suddenly barked at them to leave their jerseys on, but to put on long trousers. When they re-emerged a massive number of beers were lined

up at the bar. “We basically,” Mike Brewer would recall in 1995, “kept drinking until we fell over.” At the time the session received glowing reviews from the players, as a way to blow away any bad memories of Brisbane. In the third test, 12 days later, they trashed the Wallabies, 30-9. Even when professionalism arrived in 1996, there wasn’t a great sea change in attitudes inside the All Blacks until 2004, when, as has been well recorded, Wayne Smith was so horrified at an old-school drinking session after a test in Pretoria (“It looked,” Dan Carter would say, “like a stag do gone wrong”), Smith offered his resignation to head coach Graham Henry if the culture wasn’t changed. It did, to the point where Rob Nichol says one of the behaviours his association, and professional teams, work on is helping young men and women playing the game to work out how to go out with friends or family, and not feel awkward socially by not drinking. “Ironically,” he said, “it’s sometimes easier for elite payers to avoid drinking when they’re with the team, because all of them are in the same boat. They can’t drink too much because they’re too damn busy during a campaign.

We work to give them the tools to say ‘no’ when they’re out without causing offence, so they can stay on the straight and narrow.” There will be slips. The All Blacks, by the nature of the game, are mostly men in their 20s, and they are, as Nichol wryly notes, human after all. In some ways, the cementing of the new era in off-field behaviour with the All Blacks came in 2005, after the All Blacks had arrived in Cardiff at the start of what would be a grand slam tour of the British Isles and Ireland. Told they could go out for a few drinks in town, but to keep the volume down, a group of six, including Dan Carter, decided it’d be a good idea to go by taxi to London, 240km away, to have some drinks at a famous bar, The Church. “Eventually we found a cabbie mad enough to take us,” Carter said in his 2015 biography. “We gave him 300 pounds, grabbed some mix CDs, and a box of beers, and were soon speeding towards London.” Like a black Will Farrell comedy, everything started to go wrong as the sun came up. The Church was closed when they arrived at 10am, and on the train they frantically caught back to Cardiff their phones started pinging with angry messages from team management. That evening they were summoned to a meeting, just with the other players. “It was as low as I’d felt as an All Black,” says Carter. “We’d let our peers, and our friends, down. Tana (Umaga, the captain) absolutely ripped into us. ‘You should be sent home’.” It was the start, as Carter notes, of a new time, where players impose discipline on themselves. Despite the odd shock, horror, headline, and young men being young men, there will be more headlines in the future, it’s a system that works surprisingly well.

Jake Bailey is the ex-Christurch Boys’ High School senior monitor, whose end of year speech made worldwide headlines after going viral in 2015. A week before he was due to deliver this speech, Jake fell ill and was diagnosed with Burkitt’s NonHodgkins Lymphoma. Jake was given two weeks to live if this was left untreated. He persevered through to make his speech to his school and the video of this went on to touch the hearts of millions and draw support from around the globe. Since being announced in remission in January 2016, Jake has gone on to share his experiences, his story, and the things he has learnt which have given him clarity throughout his journey, in the hopes of helping others facing difficulties. Jake would be the first to tell you that nothing in life is certain, but one thing quite categorically is: Jake Bailey has a gift for making us want to be better human beings, simply by telling his story.

Julie Zarifeh

Resilience is a frequently used, but in reality, little understood term. Julie Zarifeh is a clinical psychologist with professional and personal experience of the need for resilience in our lives. She will share her extensive knowledge on the topic, combining academic insights with personal experiences gleaned from living through the Christchurch earthquakes and navigating personal tragedy. Her talk is insightful, inspirational and, above all practical, as she translates key research findings helping us all navigate challenge and change more effectively.
