Ashburton will be the official launch site of the country’s newlook fire service today, kicking off with a parade of 35 new and old appliances on East Street this morning.

The event marks day-one for Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ), bringing together New Zealand’s rural, urban, career and volunteer firefighters of 40 organisations into a new single organisation.

“Our firefighters are highly respected and trusted and do a great job already, but their roles are changing all the time,” he said.

“Firefighters once just focused on fire. Now they do a lot more, responding to motor vehicle crashes, medical emergencies, hazardous materials spillages, storms, floods, earthquakes and

a wide range of rescue situations.

“In addition to the ongoing fire risk and these extra demands, there are more extreme weather events with greater frequency, and the population is ageing and changing. The work we do and how we approach it is constantly evolving.”

Updated legislation provides firefighters with the appropriate powers to do their jobs. They will now be funded for all this work, and not just firefighting.

“There will be no disruption to

current services, and preventing and responding to emergencies will always be our number one priority,” Swain said.

“Our trucks will continue to roll out as normal and people should still call 111 in an emergency.

Swain said the aim is to gradually integrate existing urban and rural structures over the next three years to provide a worldleading, integrated, well co-ordinated and resourced organisation delivering reliable service across New Zealand.

Ashburton, Chertsey and Mt Somers ratepayers will be hardest hit in the Ashburton District Council’s rate strike for the coming year.

Rates on the average value Ashburton property, quoted as $292,000 by the council will lift 8.5 per cent, up $122 to $1977.60. The increase is almost solely attribut-

able to the district’s new wheelie bin kerbside collection. This sees refuse collection rates lift from $57.70 to $192.60.

The greatest increases, however, are in Chertsey and Hinds, both up by 13 per cent, again boosted by the wheelie bin service. Mt Somers property owners will pay 12.3 per cent more while Methven’s rates will rise by the district average, 6.5 per cent.

The winners in this year’s rates round are Lake Hood, a rise of just 0.9 per cent while rural property owners will see a 0.1 per cent drop. A rural property with a capital value of $9 million will pay $7790 in rates.

Rates on all properties include a uniform annual general charge of $509. This funds wholly or in part council activities such as the library, arts, culture and heritage,

recreation facilities and services, civil defence, community grants and events, community safety and well being, public conveniences, democracy and governance and environmental health.

Water rates are paid by all ratepayers, but vary according to the scheme to which they are connected. All properties pay a group fee of $208.

The targeted water rate is as low

as $150 in Rakaia and $208 in Ashburton through to a high of $2638 at Dromore (Dromore does not pay the group rate).

The council has opted to continue with its two monthly payment cycle, with the first rating instalment of the new year due on August 20.

A 10 per cent penalty will be added to rates instalments paid after due dates.

If the council opted to look at a rink it had to keep in mind that its user catchment was far wider than just the district, Direen said.

“It’s a decent option and it’s worth considering.”

Councillor Neil Brown was non-committal on the proposal, but told Direen if he was serious about the project he should make a formal submission to the council’s long term plan.

It would then become part of the line up of projects that were vying for council money or support, Brown said.

Irrigation NZ considers appeal

Irrigation New Zealand is considering appealing ECan’s Plan Change 5, which deals with the regional land and water plan, to the High Court.

Irrigation New Zealand chief executive Andrew Curtis says the organisation believes the new policy and rule framework are workable but it is concerned about the irrigation proxies used in ECan’s farm portal.

Ashburton is sitting on an opportunity just begging to be taken with vacant land around the EA Networks Centre sports facilities, promoter Alan Direen said.

He put the case for an ice rink to be built alongside the stadium to councillors at Thursday’s Ashburton District Council meeting, saying it would not only attract a high number of users, but would also cut the centre’s energy costs.

He previously talked to the council about including water features in the centre’s pool complex and yesterday when he looked at the centre he said he was impressed by the huge community use it received.

“The numbers going through are way higher than I would have assessed and that’s a real credit to you (the council),” he said.

New technology and new innovations meant an ice rink could be completed for between $8 million and $10 million, but there were significant energy savings when a rink was located alongside a pool complex.

Rinks were traditionally built either as a council project or by involving a private developer.

Ashburton was a logical place to build an ice rink as it would be used by people from Christchurch and Timaru, Direen said.

ECan councillor David Caygill is not too concerned about talk of an appeal, pointing out that the council has undertaken 10 plan changes over the past six years and on all but two of those, it received appeals on points of law to the High Court.

“Most of these appeals have been able to be resolved through discussion with the appellants

without the need for a formal High Court hearing,” he said.

“It would not be surprising if appeals were received on a plan change as significant as the Nutrient Management and Waitaki Plan Change, even though they can relate only to points of law.

“If any appeals are received we will discuss the issues raised directly with the appellants to start with. We are unable to comment on any individual appeals until they have been received and resolved.”

Appeals over the content of Plan Change 5 must be made to the High Court by July 21.

When Lot 9 in the Ashburton Business Estate was up for sale to a water bottling company, the future of its water consents became national news. The sale fell through and the land owner, the Ashburton District Council had to decide the fate of the resource consents to abstract and discharge water. District councillors had to choose whether to let the consent run its natural course until expiry in 2019 or to have it cancelled. At the council’s service delivery meeting the future of the contentious consent was decided without discussion; this week councillors signed off that decision, agreeing there would be no action on the resource consents at this time.

Trading big engines for tiny motors

For more than 40 years Robbie Maw has made a living fixing big motors; from Monday he’ll be trading down and turning his mechanical skills to fixing some of the smallest motors around.

The long serving Smallbones Isuzu mechanic signed off yesterday after 42 years with that company and almost 50 years in the industry; on Monday he starts a new job, fixing sewing machines in wife Rachel’s quilting shop.

Robbie did his time with Mid Canterbury Transport, leaving school and picking up a mechanics’ apprenticeship. Eight years later he headed overseas and on his return home saw a job opportunity at Smallbones. He applied, won the job and suddenly 42 years have been logged, he said.

In all of those years, Robbie said he’s never regretted signing on with the company – great vehicles, great workmates and a great company to work for, he said.

In the early days TK and J1 Bedford trucks were his speciality. That was in the day when mechanics were a one-man team – from diagnosis to fixing the problem.

“Today it’s all quite different, totally different, now you have to be good with computers and electronics. The computers help with

Because Smallbones has always held a new vehicle franchise, apart from elderly farm trucks, most of the vehicles through the workshop were relatively modern, Robbie said.

As a trade, being a mechanic takes a lot of beating, he said, but for too long the trades in general fell out of favour in schools

and that is still showing up in the small numbers of school leavers wanting to sign on.

The scarcity of qualified mechanics sees many companies forced to bring in qualified staff from overseas.

He looks back fondly on the days of the big engine Holden Kingswoods and Belmonts, but says that unlike many mechanics, he’s never really been a car enthusiast.

Over the years he’s always been too busy with other commitments, to be an after hours tinkerer.

In saying that, Robbie said, he has a 36 Chev stored away in pieces in the garage waiting for the day when he has time to restore it.

“It’s pretty rough at the moment. I’ve had it for 20 odd years and rebuilding it keeps getting put back,” he said.

He’s been a volunteer firefighter for 35 years and said that job takes a fair slice of time, particularly when competition work is involved. It’s time he willingly gives.

“It becomes a big part of your life.”

His later years in the workshop have been spent largely on Certificate of Fitness work with big trucks. He says he’d always promised himself he’d retire the first winter after he turned 65. There has to be a point where you call time on spending your working day in a chilly workshop, he said.

There are few on the workshop floor with his years of service, but remembers director Bob Grant was already on staff when he joined – as the office junior.

Come Monday morning Robbie will turn up for work at Annie’s Country Quilts and will learn the intricacies of fixing sewing machines.

He hopes his wife will put him on the payroll; if not, he’s anticipating a bit of pocket money might come his way.

And, he admits, he won’t be severing all ties with Smallbones.

When he signed off as a full time employee, he signed on as a casual.

“If they get stuck, I’ll come back and help out.”

Arable specialist to explore farming in the digital world

Ashburton arable specialist Kate Kircher is heading to Australia to explore how farming can put its best foot forward in a virtual world.

Kircher, who works for Carrfields, is attending the Innovation Generation conference in Adelaide, which begins on Monday. She will be with an Arable Ys group of about 14 that also includes Foundation of Arable Research staff.

The theme of the annual conference is Telling the Ag Story in a Digital Age, and speakers at the event, aimed at 18-to-35 year olds in the grain growing industry, include those who already have a digital footprint to those who can explain how to make that footprint more visible in the future.

Topics include keeping track of agricultural data; utilising social media; challenges around the

agritech revolution; and roadblocks to agricultural innovation.

Other sessions include one on how consumer trends are driving consumption in grains and another on understanding con-

sumer attitudes to food production.

For Kircher, it’s a great opportunity to get the lay of the land involving some of the latest technology applicable to the industry

and to meet some of the different people involved.

She has not attended the conference before but has spoken to some who have, so is expecting to hear plenty of cutting-edge ideas

College seeks to broaden Year 13 vocational subjects

When a Year 13 student leaves school part way through the year for a job, Ashburton College principal Ross Preece counts that as success; the Ministry of Education counts it as a failure.

In his drive to ensure every Year 13 student is engaged in study that is meaningful for them and that qualifies for NCEA level three credits, the college is introducing a range of new vocational subjects for senior students.

“This means we’ll be catering for the significant number of Year 13s who are returning to school for various reasons but who’re not planning to go to university.

Principal Ross Preece If those students leave part way through the year for work then we see that as a success, but to the ministry it’s a fail for us,” Preece said.

The fail mark comes because the student does not achieve NCEA level three.

For the college, it was a priority

to keep students at school rather than disengage with education and leave without a job or a career path, he said.

“This gives them time to make up their minds about what they want to do and gives them a chance to get level three.

We want our students to be engaged and have a meaningful timetable.”

The college currently offers some vocational subjects such as agriculture, trades and hair and beauty but will add furniture manufacturing, hospitality, construction and possibly more to next year’s Year 13 subject list.

In broadening what it offers the college, and many other second-

ary schools, faced some opposition from polytechnics as the subjects they were including were often a cross-over with polytech subjects, Preece said.

“Understandably they want the students to do that study and qualify with them and all schools are finding it a bit difficult to work through this.”

The college starts its expanded year 13 subject range next year and Preece says the move is long overdue.

Expanding the curriculum does not come with a cash injection from the Ministry of Education, and schools electing to do this have to staff those classes within set budgets.

Kircher said she is expecting to gain more insights during those visits that she can bring back to New Zealand.

Road work on rail crossing

WWE-style wrestling is coming to Methven, but ticket sales are not going as well as organisers had expected.

Christchurch-based Aftershock Pro Wrestling (APW) will present Mountain Mayhem, a seven-match card including two title matches, on July 8, at the Mount Hutt Memorial Hall.

Business operator and professional wrestling fan Richard Sheppard has organised the event to raise funds for Methven Primary School and Our Lady of the Snows School.

He said on Thursday that about 70 tickets had sold, but altogether there were about 250. He hoped to sell a lot more leading up to the event, and there would also be door sales on the night.

The two title events were a ladder match and a bull-ring match.

“I have seen it on the American wrestling and it’s quite a dangerous thing,” Sheppard said of the ladder match.

It involved a hanging championship belt and competing wrestlers trying to fend off each other as they climbed a

Ashburton motorists might need to change their route from the east side of town to the west this week as work gets under way on resurfacing the Walnut Avenue railway crossing.

The road across the railway line is expected to be closed between 7am and 6pm from Monday to Thursday.

The crossing will be open to motorists travelling from East Street to the west on Monday and Tuesday nights and to motorists travelling from west to east on Wednesday and Thursday nights.

Detours will be in place throughout the work.

Council Projects & Operations Manager Viv Eyberg says the road will be milled out and a fresh layer of asphalt applied to improve the surface of the crossing.

“The condition of the road over the railway line is quite uneven, and we want to fix this up for road users. We were hoping to complete this work while renewing the wastewater pipes under the railway line last month, however we were unable to successfully co-ordinate the two jobs with KiwiRail, due to resourcing,” he said.

Community co-operation had been excellent over the past few months while work was being carried out in the Walnut Avenue and Harrison street areas, Eyberg said.

Work on the crossing is expected to be completed on Friday.

Datlen living his space race dream T

he sky is certainly no limit for former Ashburton College student Pete Datlen, who is working in his dream job in the aerospace industry.

Datlen, whose last year at college was 2007, works for Rocket Lab, which last month successfully launched the first orbital-class rocket into space from a private site on the Mahia Peninsula.

The launch was surreal, he says.

“It was, without a word of a lie, the most exciting thing I have ever been a part of. The moment the engines ignited and the nose of the rocket appeared from behind the plume … the room erupted. It was deafening and the whole room was electric.”

Datlen is one of three vehicle assembly technicians with the company, assisting with building vehicles for Rocket Lab. Ten years earlier in his last year at Ashcoll, Datlen had no idea what he wanted to do with his life. He says he was never a straight A student, but he made a decision to do what he loved and tackled everything at 100 per cent, including school activities as Green House vice-captain. “Although I was terrible at almost everything, I really enjoyed all of it!”

He particularly remembers his form teacher Karen McKenzie, who always had words of encouragement. “I can remember so many great things she used to tell me. ‘Pete, how are you so great?’ ‘Pete, you’re the coolest guy I know’, ‘You’re going to be president one day

When Datlen’s father died in a plane crash during his last year at school, he decided to join the Royal New Zealand Airforce and became an aeronautical technician.

He then trained as a commercial pilot before ending up in the aerospace industry working for Rocket Lab. It is a dream job, but he typically downplays his ground-breaking work to stay humble.

“As a small town boy born and raised in Ashburton, it’s important to me to not forget where I came from and all the people that have helped me along the way. I owe almost all of who I am to Ashburton and especially to Ashburton College.

“I never considered myself a particularly smart guy and I wouldn’t say I was ever top of my class in anything, but I decided to do what I love. The encouragement from teachers, friends and family are a huge part of the reason I’m doing what I love today, but more importantly, I never told myself I couldn’t.

It’s cliché, and I hate myself for saying it, but find something you are passionate about and put everything you have into it “As the great Joe Dirt once said, ‘you can’t have “no” in your heart’.”

Looking back, he says he is grateful and fortunate.

“I guess what I take from everything is that you don’t have to know what you’re doing or where you’re going, but it’s important to be passionate about something. Work hard no matter how minor your job is. Put everything into making yourself and what you do better, and the opportunities open up.”

He sees exciting times ahead for the aerospace industry and launching the rocket was a huge step for the company, and the country.

“If we keep sending rockets up and finetuning them then the opportunities for us are endless for everyone. More satellites mean greater things like worldwide internet in Third World countries.”

Datlen, who is now based in Auckland, says he still makes it home to Ashburton to catch up with his mum Ningsih and friends for important occasions.

Alumni helps build heritage As a newcomer to our school and town I was delighted to discover a fledgling alumni organisation.

Like many new organisations this has been founded by a groundswell of ex-pupils determined to give something back to “their old school”.

This hasn’t been established by the college itself but rather by an enthusiastic group of ex-pupils who have been kind enough to include me in their meetings and future plans.

I see the alumni providing two key functions. The first of these is to link with the school’s past and to support the development of an Ashburton College heritage.

As a newcomer to town it’s very clear that long established features such as the house system are essential to maintain.

One of my staff members (who is an Ashcoll old girl) was offered a promotion as head of house.

She turned it down because it wasn’t “her house”.

In town I’ve had many conversations with ex-1st XV members interested in this year’s team.

Any ex-pupil of the college has a link to the past.

The second feature of our alumni is helping Ashburton College to prepare for the future. This comes in numerous forms but is often via support for future initiatives, links with the local businesses and employers and the adoption of a “how can we help attitude”.

As principal it gives me much pleasure to support the Ashburton College Alumni.

Jones ‘threat to country’ The OIA was a year old but Seymour said he had waited to release it until today.

“We wouldn’t attack people who weren’t threatening to do any damage to New Zealand and it hadn’t come to that point with Shane Jones.

“But now he is potentially a threat to the prosperity and stability of the country, I think it should be out there.”

Jones said Seymour’s attack was not worth commenting on. But asked if he considered himself to be such a threat to the country, he laughed at length and added “rest assured I’m not a political form of myrtle rust”.

However, Seymour did not write off Jones’ chances of winning in Whangarei, the city Seymour was raised in. He said it was hard to say how Jones would go against National’s Shane Reti.

Seymour has been using the possibility of NZ First holding the balance of power to try to push his own campaign to prevent that happening.

Todd Barclay, whose resignation has meant National needs to restart the selection process in the Clutha-Southland electorate.

National restarts selection process National has re-opened selections for the Clutha-Southland seat and already there are three names in the mix – including the man who unsuccessfully challenged Todd Barclay for it a few months ago.

Barclay was re-selected for the plum National safe seat, but announced he would no longer stand after the furore around claims he had secretly taped one of his staff members.

The National Party’s Southern Region Chair Rachel Bird said nominations will close on July

18 and the candidate will be selected in August.

There are already three names in the mix. Hamish Walker, 32, has confirmed he will seek the selection after standing for National in Dunedin South in 2014.

Walker told the Otago Daily Times he had been approached by a number of people aware of his campaign in Dunedin South and believed having an experienced campaigner was important because of the limited time before the election.

Walker has family in the elec-

torate. Before moving back to Dunedin in 2014, he had a property management company in Auckland.

Simon Flood, an ex-Merrill Lynch investment banker, is believed to be considering it again after challenging Barclay for the seat last year. Gore District Councillor Nicky Davis has also confirmed she is considering it.

Bird said Clutha-Southland was one of the largest electorates and the new candidate had to be energetic and “understand local aspirations.”

Act leader David Seymour has taken a pot shot at Shane Jones for standing for NZ First, accusing Jones of being a “show boater,” profligate, and even “a threat to the prosperity and stability of the country.”

Just hours before Jones’ announcement that he was standing in Whangarei for NZ First, Seymour sent out an Official Information Act release which showed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs spent $128,525 in a year on Jones’ travel and entertainment costs in his role as Pacific Economic Ambassador.

The OIA also showed the estimated budget for Jones’ role – created specially by Foreign Minister Murray McCully for Jones in 2013 – was up to $100,000 a year.

Seymour said it showed Jones would clearly feel at home with NZ First. “It’s a reminder that far from being the antidote to irresponsible public spending, NZ First are some of the worst culprits and Shane Jones is going to fit right in.”

man walks into a public toilet with a gun – and finds himself embroiled in a battle with the law lasting almost two years, which finally played out in a two-day trial in the Ashburton District Court last week.

Police alleged the defendant was unlawfully in possession of two restricted weapons, described as military style semiautomatic (MSSA) firearms.

These charges were laid following the search on his property, however no charges eventuated relating to the firearm seized from the defendant’s vehicle after he was seen carrying it in a public place in Ashburton in September 2015.

He had the correct endorsement on his firearms licence to possess the Heckler & Koch SL8 semi-automatic rifle and was, by law, required not to leave it unsecured at any time. Therefore, charges relating to that particular firearm were dropped.

The problem with the other two weapons, which do carry unlawful possession charges, largely amounted to technicalities.

Police argued the two firearms, a Hatsan Escort 12 gauge shotgun, and a Panther DPMS Arms A-15 .223 calibre rifle, fall into the category of MSSAs. Defence countered that they were not. Both sides called expert witnesses.

prosecution. He explained how changes to the Arms Act, which came into effect in 2013, redefined the description of semiautomatic pistol grip rifles or shotguns to categorise these firearms as MSSA firearms, requiring an “E” endorsement on a firearms licence.

By legal definition, MSSA describes a self-loading rifle with one or more of these features; a folding or telescopic butt; a magazine which holds more than seven cartridges, or is detach-

able and has the appearance of holding more than 10 cartridges (other than .22 rimfire), a bayonet lug, a permanently-attached pistol grip and/or a flash suppressor.

Holders of an E endorsed licence must register each MSSA firearm in their possession to the licence.

The pistol grip of the Panther DPMS found in the defendant’s possession, was, according to Ngamoti, non-compliant in that it was attached to the barrel using two screws, in contravention to

the regulations, which state the grip must only be attached at one point. The second screw was added post manufacture, he said.

If either screw was removed the grip would still be attached to the rifle, thereby defining it as an MSSA. Ngamoki said the grip was modified to comply with the Act. When Ngamoki received the rifle, along with a 30-round magazine; when photographed at the scene at the time of removal, a smaller cartridge was attached.

It later emerged Timaru firearms licensing officer John Wainwright had sent the larger magazine to Ngamoki, along with the larger magazines seized at the defendant’s home during a warranted search, conducted after his arrest near Dunsandel earlier in the day.

The defence took umbrage with this. Lawyer Michael Starling pointed out it was not illegal to possess magazines of any size, saying it was duplicitous implying the larger magazine was found in the firearm.

Sergeant Nerida Manson was surprised to learn the defendant had not committed any crime in carrying an unloaded rifle in public, when asked if she was aware of the law. She, along with constable Kieran Parsons, was at the defendant’s home to collect the rifle, and a number of other firearms secured in a gun safe in the wash house, when he arrived back at the property.

The defendant had to surrender all his firearms as a bail condition.

When questioned in court, Manson said people were fearful of military-style weapons and the defendant’s actions had provoked just such a response.

And, to be fair she had a point.

When he was seen toting a firearm scarcely a year after two women were shot dead in the Ashburton Work and Income offices it was bound to cause concern, however he was not breaking the law.

According to firearms enthusiasts the shifting sands of the police-issued Arms Code is a big part of the problem.

The most recent botch-up resulted in 35,000 copies riddled with errors distributed, which ratcheted up frustration and distrust in police and their ability to administer laws pertaining to firearms.

They say the 70-page booklet showed police intentions to implement an illegal gun control policy “wish list” that targeted law-abiding shooters rather than gangs and other unlicensed users.

Among the errors was an assertion gun owners would be required to justify the number of firearms held during police inspections of security, which contravenes the Arms Act. Federated Farmers has also spoken out on the subject, saying further restrictions on semiautomatic firearms is not the answer to the illegal possession of firearms in New Zealand.

National president Katie Milne said the organisation did not support the recommendation of the Parliamentary Select Committee inquiry into the illegal possession of firearms that semi-automatic firearms be further regulated and that permits to lend firearms to other gun licence holders be required.

“This is a case in which the National Party needs to back up its election promise of less and better regulation,” Milne said.

Semi-automatic rifles and shotguns are commonplace on farms and offer no greater risk than other types of firearms when used correctly. Many farmers were forced to purchase modern semiautomatic shotguns to comply with new steel shot regulations introduced by Fish and Game and this review puts their considerable investment at risk.

“A knee-jerk reaction to this type of firearm has the potential to impact tens of thousands of firearms licence holders across New Zealand.

“Police resources would be better spent enforcing the current Arms Act and focusing on

the criminal gang activity and home burglaries that the inquiry was intended to address,” Milne said.

Kiwigunblog author Mike Loder reiterates Milne’s position, saying police should be concentrating on criminal activity, rather than targeting law-abiding gun owners.

Loder recently obtained statistics relating to gang-related firearms offences under the Official Information Act and found a shocking 44 per cent of the country’s 3900 patched gang members and prospects had been charged with firearms offences.

Of those, nine per cent had been charged with five or more firearms offences. The number one offender had 46 firearmrelated convictions.

One-sided results on court

It was a night of one-sided matches in the first night of the third round in Mid Canterbury Netball’s premier competition on Thursday evening.

Round two runners-up Celtic opened the night with a comprehensive 32-18 win against Hampstead.

It was Hampstead who started the match the stronger however, not allowing Celtic to register a goal in the first three minutes of the first quarter.

As the quarter drew on, Celtic were able to play themselves back in to the game and finish the quarter a whisker ahead, with the score at 7-5.

From that point, Celtic did not look back, piling on the points to hold an 18-10 lead at half-time.

Similar to their last week performance, they played an exceptional third quarter, extending their lead to 27-13.

All that was left in the fourth quarter was to see out the game, which they achieved with the final score of 32-18.

After saving their place in the promotion match on Tuesday, Southern had a challenge waiting for them on Thursday when they faced round 2 winners, Ashburton College.

In the first quarter, it seemed Southern were up for the challenge, starting with three unanswered points.

However, AshColl bounced back with 5 unanswered points of their own.

Rakaia, who lost in the promotion match on Tuesday to Southern, showed why they are one of the leading sides in the grade with a classy 39-28 win against Hampstead B. Celtic C were able to take out a comfortable win against Southern B, 33-22.

n the 1970s, fans of Millwall Football Club used to sing from the terraces, ‘no one likes us, we don’t care’.

It was a celebratory act of defiance from a fan base that revelled in its notoriety as being among the game’s most organised and proactive hooligans. It was a vicious cycle, in that the more they came to be loathed, the more Millwall’s fans enjoyed their status.

In a different context, the All Blacks have been part of a vicious cycle in the last decade, yet it is one that makes little sense given the paradox at the heart of it.

The ditty to have developed in the last 10 years is in relation to their tight five, their pack in general, and it is essentially, ‘no one rates us, we don’t care’.

It is entirely beyond reason that the perception continues to exist, particularly up North, that the All Blacks are vulnerable at set piece and in their general grunt work.

Such a view doesn’t have a shred of evidence to support it, but nonetheless, since 2004, a procession of teams have travelled to New Zealand convinced they are going to be able to beat up the All Blacks.

They come with their blunt instruments, hard hats on and a conviction that if they roll their sleeves up it won’t take long before the All Blacks are lying in pieces in front of them, disassembled and essentially broken.

The Lions of 2005 came to New Zealand with no other thought in their heads, than if they turned up and walloped the All Blacks hard in the first test, that would be that.

It was utter nonsense of course.

The Lions ran into a brick wall.

They went clunk and lots of bits and pieces fell off and the All Blacks’ dominance in the forward exchanges was total.

There was a kind of post Apocalyptic feel to tests two and three with the visitors trying to recover from the carnage of the first.

But that series didn’t act as a deterrent and plenty of other teams have fallen into the trap of seeing things the same way. The French, the English, the Boks, even the Wallabies over the last 13 years or so have imagined they will be able to inflict untold damage in the core areas of scrum, collision and lineout.

Yet for all that these teams have believed in their muscular superiority, none have been able to prove it – including the current Lions.

Much like their predecessors, they built their plan prior to arrival on the premise they could poke a hole in the soft underbelly of the All Blacks’ tight five.

They picked big men in their squad, then their biggest and most scary for the first test with a clear view to try to crush the All Blacks scrum, destroy their lineout and own them in the collisions.

History repeated, though, and once again it was the All Blacks tight five who were dominant – producing the game-winning moment with an enormous scrum.

“Tonight’s test was always going to be won in the tight five and I think we won that battle,” said Steve Hansen. “We have got to be extremely proud of what we did.

You don’t become the number one side in the world for as long as we have been – and I don’t want to sound like we are bragging here – without a very good tight five.

“I always find it amusing when everyone tells us they are going to beat us up in the tight five. We are not just a team that plays flashy rugby. I think we can play down and dirty rugby too if we have to and I mean that in the most respectful way.”

In the wake of such an epic

response, there would be good reason for the All Blacks tight five to take their moment in the sun and perhaps shine their light back at the Lions and all those who continue to doubt them.

But the prevailing view within the tight five cabal is that firstly the job is only half done and secondly, performance is far more eloquent than words.

They would also rather not let on that the continual commentaries – direct and implied – are quite a handy tool to help them get in the right head space.

Motivation at this level is always intrinsic, but the All Blacks coaching staff don’t mind at all that their tight five are constantly under scrutiny and running out with a little extra personal desire to make their presence felt.

Whatever the players may think privately, publicly being continually under rated and targeted is not a source of frustration says tighthead prop Owen Franks.

He understands why it happens and it’s more, he thinks, because opposition teams from North of the Equator especially, have a different attitude that they don’t easily suspect the All Blacks share.

“It is just the difference of styles you know,” he says. “In the

UK they look to get dominance and psychological edge with the scrum. Some teams in New Zealand are just really efficient at getting good ball from the scrum for their backs to play off.

“I don’t think it necessarily means you are not a good at scrummaging, you just play off it a different way.”

The Lions learned the hard way at Eden Park that if the All Blacks feel the need, they can scrummage for penalties.

They can also make giant inroads using the likes of Brodie Retallick and Sam Whitelock to hit the ball up in the middle of the field.

With the likes of Beauden Barrett and Rieko Ioane weaving their particular brand of magic, it may superficially look like the All Blacks are all about their dash rather than their bash.

But that’s the picture the All Blacks want opponents to believe they are looking at. The truth is more as prop Wyatt Crockett explains it: “We want to make sure that we front up and don’t let them dominate us. It has been talked about over the last three or four weeks in particular and the coaches have demanded that we get the job done up front.” - NZME

There’s everything to gain, but also plenty to lose for Celtic when they step out onto the paddock in Watters Cup action this afternoon.

A victory in their clash against Methven at home will see them stride to the top of the standings which could be vital with their bye week approaching next weekend.

Five valuable points would give them a clear buffer and leave them in a good position to push forward to a home semi-final in the Watters Cup race.

Shane Enright will have hammered home to his men the threat that Methven can often pose to any team and that the

need to be clinical in everything they do will be paramount.

Fresh off the back of their victory over Combined finalists Rakaia last week, complacency could be an issue, but Enright is savvy enough to ensure it’s not a problem.

Methven, on the other hand, will be out to get things back on track.

Thus far, 2017 hasn’t been all that kind to them and while some results have shown what they are capable of – others have left a bit of a sour taste in the collective mouths of some of their supporters.

Perennially proud, the black and white brigade will see the next couple of weeks as being vital from Andy Pearce’s men and

with a spot in the semi-finals very much still up for grabs a win against a top-flight side like Celtic will greatly help their chances.

This afternoon’s second match will see Hampstead host Rakaia in a pretty important clash for both sides.

Hampstead are still languishing this season and need to get kick-started somehow, which will be tough after being smashed about by competition leaders, Southern just seven days ago.

The flair and brilliance expected from the side doesn’t seem to be there and with that missing it’s exposing other areas that will be frustrating Regan Broker and Maurice McGoon.

For Rakaia the clash is highly important.

Their opening match of the Watter’s Cup – after a wonderful Combined Country Rugby campaign – went pear-shaped when they were beaten by Celtic last week.

Up 14-0 after 10 minutes, Rakaia went to sleep and took their opposition for granted, much to the ire of their coaches Wayne Foxcroft and Sean Carter.

You would imagine that trainings next to the river this week have been rather forceful as they try and put that result behind them and get things back in the right direction today.

On paper, Rakaia should romp home and secure five valuable points, but after last week’s shock defeat anything is possible on the rugby paddock.

All Blacks’ leaders required to step up

BY PATRICK MCKENDRY Ben Smith’s quality as a player and, as is becoming more evident, a leader, means the All Blacks don’t start an important test without him if he is fit.

The All Blacks fullback and vice-captain played 12 of his team’s 14 tests last year – he missed the end-of-year tour matches against Italy and France – and this second test against the British and Irish Lions will be the first significant one he has missed in a long time.

Coach Steve Hansen believes he is the best No15 in the world and so does his Lions counterpart Warren Gatland.

A case could be made for Smith being the best wing in the world too when he plays there.

So in his absence in Wellington, various others will have to step up and make their voices heard.

With men such as Sam Whitelock, Sam Cane, Aaron Smith and Beauden Barrett in the team that won’t be too difficult. All possess

special rugby intelligence and are excellent leaders in their own right.

The expected backlash from the Lions after their first-test failure will also serve to focus minds for the men in black at Westpac.

It has the potential to be up several notches in intensity compared with last weekend and it will be important that Israel Dagg, Smith’s replacement in the No15 jersey, offers skipper Kieran Read some insight from the back.

Read said there was no official vice-captain in Smith’s absence, but that several of his teammates had the capabilities of performing that role.

“I’ve got a good bunch of men around me, there are probably a few guys putting their hand up,” Read said yesterday after the captain’s run at the stadium.

“We’ve got our leaders. Beaudy will step up and drive us around the field, Aaron Smith as well ... we’ve got leaders across the whole forward pack.

“Izzy has played 50 tests – we need to use his eyes because he

“The talk coming out of their camp is that they’re definitely going to play a bit more than they did last week so we’ll certainly expect that.

“If anything it’s going to be more physical on Saturday and we can’t wait for that battle.”

The All Blacks are seeking improvements across the board and in particular their lineout.

In Whitelock, Brodie Retallick, Jerome Kaino, Cane and Read

himself, the All Blacks have one of the best attacking and defensive lineouts in the world and they were disappointed to lose several on their own throw at Eden Park.

“It was an off day for us,” Read said. “We certainly pride ourselves on the lineout. We haven’t worked any harder, just a bit smarter this week and probably when we look back on it, it was our own errors really – one when they got in front of us and the rest were our own fault.”

Told that the Lions players were viewing this test as the biggest of their careers, and asked about whether it compared with a World Cup final, Read said: “I guess it compares in terms of the one-off nature of the game.

“If they win they’re in the series and if we win we win the series... it’s pretty special, the fact that it [tour] comes around every 12 years is another factor.

“I certainly know we’re pretty excited by the whole challenge of what the Lions have brought.

“We knew last week we were in a huge test match.”

Streaker convicted The man who invaded the pitch at last weekend’s All Blacks test at Eden Park – naked apart from his socks – has been convicted. Jordan Wade, 23, appeared in court yesterday on charges of invading a pitch of a major sporting event and offensive behaviour. He pleaded guilty to both charges.

Wade jumped three barriers and dodged a security guard to sprint onto Eden Park in the final minutes of the test match between the All Blacks and the Lions.

Combo likely to excite The transition to a Johnny SextonOwen Farrell playmaking axis for the British and Irish Lions’ second Test against the All Blacks is coming along “seamlessly”, according to Farrell’s father and Lions assistant Andy. Warren Gatland’s test selection has rolled the dice with the series on the line in Wellington, slotting Farrell in at second-five for the benched Ben Te’o and injecting Irish linchpin Sexton into the starting XV. Andy Farrell said that Sexton and Farrell had spent plenty of time together behind closed doors, despite their limited on-field minutes, and were looking impressive.

Girls fly the flag for College All three Ashburton College junior basketball teams competed in the Aoraki Secondary Schools’ Junior Championships this week, with the boys’ teams in Ashburton on Wednesday and the girls’ team in Timaru on Thursday.

At the boys’ tournament, the Junior A team finished top of their pool and won their semifinal to earn entry into the A final against a sizable Waitaki Boys.

The boys battled throughout, but struggled to overcome Waitaki’s pace and strength, going down 32-12 for second place.

The Junior B team fought hard all day picking up wins against Roncalli B in pool play and Roncalli A in the crossovers, finishing the day in sixth place.

The junior girls had a dominant tournament in Timaru, outscoring most of their opponents by 30 or more points.

In round robin play, the girls defeated Craighead, Roncalli A, St. Kevin’s, Timaru Girls’ 9 A, Timaru Girls’ 10 A and Waitaki Girls’.

Waitaki went the closest, with the College girls taking a 42-17 win and the overall tournament championship trophy.

Warriors hooker Issac Luke is likely to return to the footy field within a fortnight after dislocating his shoulder in Friday’s 21-14 NRL win over the Bulldogs, according to coach Stephen Kearney.

The 30-year-old Luke, a strong performer in recent weeks, was forced off Mount Smart Stadium in the first half of his side’s win over Canterbury.

He’ll skip this weekend’s trip to Perth to take on Manly, before taking advantage of next week’s bye round to rest and rehabilitate.

He’s expected back for the following game on July 14 against Penrith, with Nathaniel Roache to slot into the No.9 jumper in his absence.

“Depending on how his rehab goes, we anticipate he’ll be back for the Penrith game,” Kearney told reporters on Thursday. “He’s pulled up pretty well.”

Elsewhere on the personnel front, star five-eighth Kieran Foran is looking good for tonight’s match after being named in the extended squad.

The Kiwis playmaker missed the side’s win over the Bulldogs, his future employers, with a quad strain picked up against the Gold Coast.

Kearney was quietly confident he’d be able to call on Foran against his former NRL club in Perth, reuniting with halves partner Shaun Johnson.

Young gun Ata Hingano, capable of playing in the halves or at dummy half, has been named in the squad as additional cover.

“He’s a lot further ahead this week than he was,” Kearney said of Foran.

Solomone Kata will miss the trip west due to a family grievance in his native Tonga, while Manu Vatuvei has been named on the extended bench.

With Ken Maumalo and Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad producing the goods on each flank, the Warriors veteran has struggled for minutes in 2017.

Kearney said Vatuvei’s opportunity would eventually arrive.

“It’s just a matter of being ready – Manu’s kept himself in wonderful shape and he’s a player who’s been around a long time,” Kearney said.

All eyes turning to Wimbledon As tennis turns to Wimbledon, there’s been a bit of a throwback feel to this Grand Slam season so far.

At the year’s first major tournament, the Australian Open in January, Roger Federer beat Rafael Nadal for the men’s title, and Serena Williams defeated her sister, Venus, for the women’s title.

Matchups from a decade ago or more, right?

Then, at the French Open in May and June, Nadal reached a second consecutive major final for the first time since 2014, and won one for the first time since that year.

In brief Off with a bang At just 14 kilometres, the opening time trial in Stage 1 in Duesseldorf is short enough for a good number of riders to harbour ambitions of winning it and becoming the first wearer of the race leader’s iconic yellow jersey – a guaranteed highlight of any rider’s career. It also isn’t long enough for riders who are strong against the clock, like defending champion Chris Froome, to open up big gaps over weaker time trialers like key rival Nairo Quintana. With most riders still in contention after the time trial and full of nervous energy, they will race hell for leather over the next three flattish stages, increasing the likelihood of crashes that could take out top contenders.

Two-wheel challenge With 21 stages, 23 tough climbs in five mountain ranges, three mountain-top finishes and two time trials, the route for the Tour de France, which begins tomorrow in Duesseldorf promises to challenge the wide variety of skill sets in the professional cycling peloton.

The final climb is short, but nasty and at the end maxes out at 20 per cent. This is where the heavy hitters will make their first overall claims.

July 9, Stage 9 – Nantua to Chambery, 181.5km Billed as potentially the toughest climbing day of this year’s Tour, this day in the Jura features three “hors categorie”, or abovecategory ascents. The Col de la Biche makes its Tour debut, fol-

lowed by the Grand Colombier and the Mont du Chat, plus a tricky descent to the finish.

July 13, Stage 12 - Pau to Peyragudes, 214.5km Pau – that means the Pyrenees.

The climb to the summit finish at Peyragudes was where Froome famously went ahead of his Sky team leader and eventual race winner Brad Wiggins, confirming they were as much rivals as teammates.

July 14, Stage 13 – Saint-Girons to Foix, 101km Bastille Day will be short but savage for the riders, with day two in the Pyrenees featuring a succession of category one climbs. The last climb, the Mur de Peguere, was where defend-

ing champion Cadel Evans and several other riders fell victim to sabotage in 2012 as tacks were thrown onto the road.

July 19, Stage 17 – La Mure to Serre-Chevalier, 183km The first true Alps stage this year features the Col du Galibier, one of the Tour’s most famous climbs.

Galibier is on the race route for the first time since 2011, when it was a crucial battleground in Cadel Evans’ triumph.

At 2642m, it is the highest point in the race.

July 20, Stage 18 – Briancon to Izoard, 179.5km For all the prestige of Galibier, this time it is not a summit finish.

Izoard is.

And it’s a real brute – the hardest of the three summit finishes this year. It will be the first time that the 14.1km Col d’Izoard climb has hosted the end of a stage, despite its mythical status in Tour history. The last mountain stage of the race.

July 22, Stage 20 – individual time trial in Marseille, 22.5km This year’s Tour only features 36km of time trialling – 14km in stage one at Dusseldorf and then the crucial second-last stage.

Porte is one of the class time trial riders in the field and if he is at the pointy end of the overall standings, this could mean to him what the Grenoble time trial meant for Cadel Evans six years ago.

EPO ‘has no effect’ says new test The blood booster at the heart of the Lance Armstrong doping scandal does not improve real-world cycling performance, according to the most rigorous study yet of how the protein EPO affects athletes.

The results, published yesterday in the journal Lancet Haematology, may convince some to pay more attention to the harms of supposed performance-enhancing drugs by punching holes in the myths surrounding them, researchers said.

One support rider already has

been dropped from his team after a test was positive for EPO. In 2012, Armstrong was stripped of his seven Tour de France titles for doping and he later admitted to using EPO and other banned substances.

The anti-doping agency’s science director, Olivier Rabin, said he would read the study with interest, but doubted it would change the group’s ban on EPO. “We would need much more than this,” Rabin said. “The scientific community will receive this with a lot of skepticism.” - AP

Sprinters like Marcel Kittel, who can hit speeds of 70 kilometers per hour over short distances, will be looking for victories on the stages between Duesseldorf and Day 5, when the Tour veers sharply uphill in the Vosges – spiky, hilly terrain where bulkier, muscly sprinters struggle. They will get more opportunities for victories in Burgundy wine country at the end of week one, in week two before the Pyrenees and, of course, on the cobblestones of the Champs-Elysees boulevard at the end of the final stage in Paris on July 23.

Ouch, that will hurt In their perpetual quest to innovate, Tour organisers have slightly cut down on the quantity of climbs in 2017 but increased their steepness. Six particularly steep ascents stand out, starting in stage 5 with 20 per cent gradients up to the Planche des Belles Filles ski station in the Vosges in eastern France. Froome won the stage there in 2012. The Col du Grand Colombier, in the Jura mountains on stage 9, has the sharpest gradients — 22 per cent, steep enough to test the clutches of reporters who follow the race by car if they’re not careful.

Tour’s Queen Stage Every Tour has a stage that stands out for its difficulty and drama — the so-called “Queen stage.”

This year that appears to be the unprecedented mountain-top finish at the Col d’Izoard in the Alps. The hostile terrain of sunand snow-scorched rocks and the thinning mountain air on the long climb to an altitude of 2360 metres (7742 feet) could make the Izoard, at the end of stage 18, the last big battleground among surviving contenders for the winner’s check of 500,000 euros ($550,000).

Last but not least The 22.5 kilometre time trial in the Mediterranean port city of Marseille on the penultimate stage 20 should settle overall rider placings before the largely ceremonial final ride into Paris the next day. It will start and finish in the Velodrome Stadium that is home to the city’s football team, and will go through the Old Port, with a short climb to the white basilica that overlooks France’s second-largest city.

Danielle taking on the world Danielle Johnson will take on the best female riders in the world when she travels to Sweden to compete in the inaugural Lady Jockeys’ Thoroughbred World Championship.

“I leave this Saturday, straight after the meeting at Te Rapa.

“I’ll head straight up to Auckland airport to fly out that night and will land in Sweden on Sunday night their time,” Johnson said.

The competition will take place on July 4 at the newly built Bro Park, located 40 kilometres outside of Stockholm.

The track isn’t foreign to Johnson who competed in a similar competition at the venue’s opening last year, but was plagued by bad draws.

“They had a really good turnout last year,” Johnson said.

“It was a great day with a lot of people attending, but this year I hope to get better luck with the draw of my horses.”

She will compete against nine

other riders over five races on Bro Park’s 1900m dirt and 2100m turf tracks, including Britain’s most successful jockey Hayley Turner, who is coming out of retirement for the competition.

“I’m really looking forward to returning to Sweden and competing against some of the best female jockeys in the world,” Johnson said.

Trotting dominates racing interest in the Scandinavian country, but Johnson said the thoroughbred industry is trying to increase its popularity. They have some star power assisting their cause with former ABBA member Benny Andersson backing the competition.

“Harness Racing is so big over there, galloping is such a small part of their industry.

“But they are trying to make it bigger with events such as the Female World Championship and investing in tracks like Bro Park,” she said.

“It’s an amazing set-up that

they have over there. Last year was such a fantastic experience, but the track was still maturing, so going back over there I’d say there would be a huge change.”

After the one-day competition, Johnson will take advantage of being in Europe and will visit family in England and France before flying back to New Zealand.

“My mum’s family is from Europe so I’m going to London on July 5 to catch-up with a few uncles. I’ll then arrive back in New Zealand on the 13th, before Stephen (Marsh) and I go to Hawaii for a proper holiday for two weeks.”

A front-runner for the jockey premiership, Johnson said she was going to go to Sweden regardless of her position, but with Chris Johnson now 11 wins ahead of her she has elected to extend her stay.

“Chris has kicked quite clear of me now. He’s going to keep travelling and will be very hard to beat,” she said.

Prize-money on rise New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing has announced stakes increases of more than $2 million for Feature and Premier 2 meetings next season. Minimum stakes for non-maiden races at all Feature meetings will rise to $22,500 as part of a $6.5 million funding boost from the New Zealand Racing Board for each of the next two seasons. Eminent on target Martyn Meade believes the course at Sandown will be ideal for the New Zealand-owned Eminent in next month’s Gr.1 Eclipse Stakes.

The Frankel colt, raced by Sir Peter Vela, showed he was progressing well toward the July 8 feature with a smart midweek gallop over 1400m at Newmarket. “He worked very well and he’s on course to go to Sandown. That’s the plan,” Meade said. Eminent performed with credit when sixth in the Gr.1 2000 Guineas then fourth in the Gr.1 English Derby after creating a good impression when winning the Gr.3 Craven Stakes.

When the KiwiSaver Act was passed, its main purpose was clear: encourage a long-term savings habit and help individuals build up their assets to smooth the path to retirement, allowing people to enjoy a similar standard of living in retirement as they did beforehand.

For those aged 55 to 64, the reason they aren’t in the scheme may be that they are already well prepared for retirement and don’t

need KiwiSaver, she says.

Then there will be a group who say “sure, KiwiSaver is great but I can’t afford it”.

“For those already working, joining KiwiSaver represents a reduction in take-home pay,” says Matthews. “If you are in a low paid job or have high costs, they may be in a position where they can’t afford it.”

But she says those are the very people who would probably benefit most from joining KiwiSaver.

Matthews says the people who have no excuses are the young – the 18 to 28-year-olds who entered the workforce in the past 10 years.

In a further ERA determination, delivered on March 31 but publicly released this week, the authority said the company had paid $28,000 in to the Crown’s bank account as of March 27. The Companies Office has since removed the firm from its register while Lally

declared himself on May 26, according to the Insolvency Trustee Service.

The latest ERA decision said the Land Information New Zealand register showed Lally owned two properties along with other family members. Lally told the ERA that he had sold his house last year and after payment of his mortgage and all other costs was left with $49,270.

“No documents have been provided to the authority to support Mr Lally’s statement that he sold either of his two properties although a transfer of ownership was made,” the decision said. – NZME

Kiwifruit boss bankrupt, owes $200k A kiwifruit company that didn’t properly pay employees or meet employment obligations has only paid $28,000 of the $226,000 it owed and the boss has now declared himself bankrupt.

Freemind Enterprize Limited and its director Gurmail Lally were in June last year ordered by the Employment Relations Authority (ERA) to pay $161,343.67 for money owed to workers and $65,000 in penalties for other breaches.

This followed a Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) investigation that revealed the company did not have written employment agreements, wage,

Sleeping KiwiSavers miss out on billions From the outside, KiwiSaver looks like a huge success story.

The retirement savings scheme – which celebrates its 10th birthday today – has more than 2.7 million members, with investments worth more than $40 billion.

Dig a little deeper, though, and the gloss isn’t quite so shiny.

While the number of members is high, many of them are children who were enrolled by their parents to collect the $1000 signup bonus, which has since been scrapped.

Take away the kids and you are left with 2.4 million out of a possible 2.94 million adults who are eligible to belong to the scheme.

More than 500,000 New Zealanders between 18 and 65 don’t belong. And of those who do, many are sleeping savers.

Inland Revenue figures show 580,000 Kiwis got no government grant in the 2016 KiwiSaver financial year, which means they didn’t put in a single dollar.

These people aren’t on official contribution holidays: they just aren’t contributing.

Another 609,000 people put in less than $1043, the amount needed to get the maximum government grant.

NZX will carry out an extensive review of its business with the results due in November and while shareholder Tony Falkenstein wasn’t elected to the board, his observations will be considered as part of that review, chairman James Miller told yesterday’s annual general meeting.

Chief executive Mark Peterson – who took the helm on January 1 – told shareholders in Wellington that the review “will determine the shape of our business and influence the strategies we will adopt in growing the business and New Zealand’s capital markets for the longterm.” The goal is to make sure “we have a business that’s completely connected back to the core” and that any adjacent businesses can be leveraged back to that core, he said.

Good timely decisions Sue Newman

ot everyone will like the outcome, but at least a decision has been made on the site of Ashburton’s new civic centre and library.

After months of dithering, the Ashburton District Council has finally made a decision, and it’s essentially the same decision they were ready to make almost nine months ago.

The only difference is that ratepayers will find themselves adding many thousands of dollars to the cost of the project through extra investigative work and rising building costs.

Of course councillors should not make decisions on the fly without solid research and plenty of debate, but on this project Ashburton’s councillors have pushed the decision making process to the extreme.

Full credit to the last team of councillors for opting to leave the final site decision to the new team. They’re the ones who will be seeing the project from drawing board to reality, but not a lot of credit to those members of the new team who were responsible for further delays and additional costs.

One of the things to become apparent as the project was pushed back and reopened for debate, was the lack of understanding some councillors had of the project. It’s been discussed, debated, public consultation has been held on at least two occasions and all the facts and figures have been spelled out for everyone to see. Nothing has been hidden, yet some councillors appear not to have grasped the positives, negatives, costs, options and likely outcomes for each site Clearly it is not safe to assume that anyone standing for council will be well informed about current projects and neither is it safe to assume that every councillor who sat round the council table last term was up to speed. And that’s something we, as voters, should be pretty disappointed about.

Being elected to council comes with huge responsibilities and those responsibilities include making sure you have an absolute understanding of every issue that’s up for debate, that you are well informed and if you need answers you get them before the issue comes up for debate. That’s called doing your job.

And the job is also about, like it or not, making the right decision for your community, not necessarily what might be right for you or your mates.

David As a member of Southern and a holder of a club managers licence I find this completely frustrating situation for clubs and there responsibilities towards the licencing laws. We held our club day last Saturday and had lots of rugby playing kids and parents, grand parents etc through the clubrooms we fed the kids and some people had a drink of some sort these are a good social platform for people to catch up and celebrate with the kids right through to senior level. Like everyone has said previous it is getting a lot harder for the volunteers of clubs to function. These laws and conditions need to be readdressed or club stuff in any form will vanish from our social calender which is what us Kiwis are all about.

When little brother wins D

o we have to be related to Australians in a global sense of the word? I know we share many similarities, but seriously, can we stop promoting being anywhere near them?

You know that completely dominant, in your face, beat them to pulp thrashing Team New Zealand just handed out, well it seems the Australians wish to claim some fame by reporting the boat represented Australasia!

Now they only want to do this because they don’t really have any international sports trophies for their bare little display cabinet in the Opera House.

And it’s not that I am really against them but I dread the whole notion of being little brother to their big brother when they really have some of the silliest ideas this side of the equator.

This is the country that has had more prime ministers in the past five years than I have had haircuts. They love to get the job and claim victory, but are unsure what to do next, because it was all about winning.

Let’s not forget that one of their most brilliant prime ministers, Tony Abbott, said this “What the housewives of Australia need to understand, as they do the ironing, is that if they get it done commercially it’s going to go up in price – and their own power bills when they switch the iron on are going to go up.”

If New Zealand and Australia had to enter a team in University Challenge, the Australians would hit the buzzer first, raise their hands in triumph, then turn to the Kiwis and say “here little Kiwi cuz, you answer the question this time.”

And of course we would, and then Australia would take the credit.

Recently it was reported that two schools in Oztralia had banned cartwheels and handstands!

Yip because obviously those are really, really, naughty activities for children to do.

Nope, they said it was, and I quote the brilliant school principal Shane Dougherty, “the ban was to stop them from hurting themselves.”

In fact the news article did use the incredible amount of injury data gathered to report that the school banning handstands experienced at least two children a day with sore wrists.

No wonder Greg asked younger brother Trevor to bowl underarm, he was complaining of having sore wrists.

Hmm, so let me get this straight. You are a school where children go to learn. Your job is to teach children about how to do stuff and in doing so allow them to make mistakes and practice until they get it right.

So you didn’t think that maybe having someone teach them how to do good handstands or cartwheels was part of what you do?

That maybe you could be creative and use local parent knowledge or older students to help them learn about gymnastics?

So, what would it mean if other incredibly dangerous activities are likely to be banned in Australian schools?

Well skipping does increase the risk of rolling an ankle or dislocating a knee.

It has been known that running leads to improved health, and clearer thinking, and that is definitely not good for you.

Also throwing and catching a ball may result in hyper extension

of the elbow, and playing tag significantly raises the slight chance of you ending up with one arm longer than the other because you keep reaching out to tag someone.

So what could the average Australian be useful for once they have had a typical Australian education? Well, funny you should ask!

After learning that all physical activity is harmful, the average Ocker is good for one occupation – professional polisher.

Yip, polishing smooth surfaces until they shine is the only accepted physical activity they are allowed to do.

So what sort of job is available to a professional polisher? Well there is the Rugby World Cup

that needs a clean, including the cabinet.

Then there is the Number 1 Song in the US at the moment, sung by Lorde. That needs polishing.

And of course, there is the America’s Cup, won by TEAM NEW ZEALAND, that needs a lot of polishing, but don’t go too over the top little Aussie battler, you might get sore wrists.

Trump’s travel ban far cry from original With Donald Trump’s travel ban now in place, the White House is declaring victory on the first major policy push of his presidency. But it can’t be the win Trump imagined.

Once a blanket ban on Muslims, it then became a temporary ban on visitors from seven majority-Muslim countries and has now finally arrived as a list of confusing new visa restrictions.

Trump’s eye-popping campaign promise to deliver security by blocking entry into the US has become the incredible shrinking travel ban – rewritten, tweaked, watered down and litigated nearly beyond recognition.

All but lost in the five-month editing process and court fight is the president’s stated aim: keeping dangerous people out of the US. Trump initially billed the temporary ban on visitors from certain countries and refugees as an urgent and necessary tool to keep out would-be terrorists while the government crafted new “extreme vetting” procedures. But five months and no ban later, the administration has made little effort to build a stronger case and offered scant new evidence to back up its claims.

The restrictions which are now in effect, reinstated temporarily by the Supreme Court, are a far cry from Trump’s initial executive order, which sparked protests, chaos at airports and legal challenges in his administration’s earliest days. That order was withdrawn after being replaced with a version that Trump himself described as “watered down” and “politically correct”.

“What the Supreme Court did was watered it down even further,” Kari Hong, an immigration law expert at Boston College Law School, said of the version that took effect.

The justices’ ruling exempts people if they can prove a “bona fide relationship” with a US person or entity. Under State Department guidelines, visa applicants from six Muslim-majority countries for the next 90 days need to show close family or business ties to the United States.

Citizens of Syria, Sudan, Somalia, Libya, Iran and Yemen with a parent, spouse, child, adult son or daughter, son-in-law, daughter-in-law or sibling already in the United States could be allowed to enter.

Williams runs red light Tennis star Venus Williams caused a car crash earlier this month that led to the death of a passenger in another vehicle, according to police. Palm Beach Gardens police say witnesses told investigators that Williams ran a red light in her 2010 Toyota Sequoia SUV, causing a June 9 crash that injured 78-year-old Jerome Barson, who died two weeks later. The report says a 2016 Hyundai Accent driven

by Barson’s wife, Linda, crashed into the side of Williams’ SUV. Williams said she had entered the six-lane intersection on a green light but was forced to stop midpoint by traffic ahead.

The same requirements, with some exceptions, apply for the next 120 days to refugees from all nations who are still awaiting approval.

Experts aren’t expecting large numbers of people to be immediately affected.

Temple University law professor Peter Spiro, an immigration law expert, noted the numbers are difficult to predict because of likely legal challenges over the interpretation of the term “bona fide,” which the court did not define.

While Trump declared the court ruling a “win,” his administration did not lay out a clear case for the national security

merits of the plan.

In a conference call with reporters Thursday, only one of five administration officials – one representing the White House – couched the Supreme Court order as a step that will have a marked impact on improving national security. The other four officials, from the departments of State, Justice and Homeland Security, described the actions more narrowly.

Asked specifically how the measures would improve security, a State Department official said only, “The guidance we have from the president is to put a pause on certain travel while we review our security posture”.

The officials all spoke on condition of anonymity despite describing a public executive order.

Things blow up on Territory Day Screaming children running for cover, dogs carrying live fireworks in their mouths, men extinguishing fires with their thongs and explosions setting off car alarms; just a normal run of events on Territory Day. A compilation of disastrous, expletiveladen home videos has been released by NT Police on social media as a warning ahead of today’s cracker night, the one time a year Territorians can legally blow things up.

Kids and adults alike scream and run for cover in the footage posted to Facebook, with some sage safety advice from Territory cops: “don’t be stupid”.

Some 336 tonnes of fireworks have been imported into the NT to be sold between

9am and 9pm on July 1 as locals mark the 39th anniversary of self-governance from the Commonwealth.

The proud tradition spans almost four decades, but authorities are urging people to be responsible to avoid any casualties as they celebrate.

In the 10 years to 2016, 197 people have gone to hospital with firework-related injuries including severe burns, lacerations, visual impairment, hearing loss and even broken bones.

Of these, more than half were children under 16 and the majority of injuries were avoidable, Centre for Disease Control Acting Director Dr Charles Douglas says.

“In more than one-third of cases, by-

standers who were not directly involved in the lighting of fireworks were injured.”
