Abandon your plans to sell Lot 9 in your business estate to a water bottling company or we’ll see you in court, community action group Bung the Bore has told the Ashburton District Council. Speaking for the group at yesterday’s council meeting, leader Jen Branje read a substantial submission to councillors, giving a raft of reasons why the plan to allow a buyer to use a water consent on the lot to establish a water bottling plant
was flawed. “We cannot find any cohesive reason to allow 40 billion litres of our pure, potable water to be extracted and gifted to a commercial entity for their long-term gain. “Please note our absolute and unreserved opposition to the extraction of any water for the purpose of bottling in our red-zoned district,” she said She questioned the council’s understanding of social responsibility if it could decide to ‘give away’ the district’s water for a short-term gain.
“The Ashburton District Council has absolutely no mandate to be trading or offering our resources to buyers as part of the sale of public land,” she said. No-one knew what impact giving away 40 billion litres of water would have on future generations of Mid Cantabrians, Ms Branje said.
