Work and Income has turned its back on a new purpose-built office on Tancred Street.

The high-security was built as part of the $40 million Eastfield precinct development. In early December Ministry of Social Development general manager property Vaughan Crouch said plans were on track for practical completion on March 31 and would be officially open shortly after that date.

However, this week Crouch revealed a change of plan. The yet-to-be-outfitted

building will now house a Child, Youth and Family office.

The ministry will continue to look for a suitable site for Work and Income, Crouch said in an email statement.

The decision was based on staff safety concerns.

“We have been working closely with local staff and taking on their feedback, as we find a permanent location for our new Work and Income site in Ashburton,” he said.

“We are now looking at options where it is possible to incorporate more exit points for our Ashburton team.”

Ashburton Work and Income staff have worked out of Portacom offices on the grounds of the police station since staff members Peggy Noble and Leigh Cleveland were shot dead in the agency’s Cass Street offices in September 2014.

Child, Youth and Family occupied part of the same building, which was reopened last year as Community House, housing a number of community welfare organisations.

111 call goes Influx of new entrants at Borou into overload

An Ashburton woman who tried to call through to the police 111 call centre on Sunday, was alarmed to receive an overloaded message.

Unable to place the call at 5.40pm, she was concerned and left questioning what she should do next.

A police spokesperson said they were not aware of the specific incident, but said the 111 system has a high demand message that automatically plays if a caller has waited for more than 30 seconds for the Initial Call Answering

Point (ICAP) to answer, indicating that all the ICAP operators are busy on the phone with other emergency calls.

“For example, a major crash occurs on the state highway and 10 people ring 111 at the same time and are answered by the ICAP, if the 11th call waits over 30 seconds to be answered, the high demand message will play.

“The caller should stay on the line until they are answered as the next operator could be free in a short time frame.”

ICAP is operated by Spark and ICAP receives and filters the calls to the relevant emergency service.

Body found near business park A body has been found on the side of State Highway 1 near the Ashburton Business Park yesterday.

St John were called to the scene at 4.22pm, where ambulance officers discovered the person was

deceased.

Two ambulances and four police cars were observed nearby a stationary vehicle.

Police are investigating due to the circumstance of the death, a St John spokesperson reported.

Ashburton Borough School’s new entrant class is bursting at the seams as the roll hits its highest level in at least two decades.

New entrant teacher Sarah Hey had her hands full yesterday as she was teaching a class of 18 exuberant five-year-olds in the school’s new entrant class.

“It’s very busy,” she said.

For 15 of the pupils it was their first day when school went back on Monday, and there had been some nerves and one child who cried, Hey said.

But by yesterday everyone had settled in and they were reveling in all the fun learning activities.

“They took a while to come out of their shells, it’s a whole different ball game today,” she said.

Ashburton Borough, like many schools in Mid Canterbury, is in a pattern of roll growth.

Principal Sam Winterbourn said he expected there to be three new entrant classes by the end of the year. Last year’s starting roll was 406, and this year’s was 435, the highest he had known in his 23 years at the school.

By the end of the year it was projected to be 490.

Roll growth was Mid Canterbury wide and due to population growth, a reflection of the district’s economy and good job prospects attracting newcomers.

“All the schools have benefited from confidence and buoyancy in the community,” Winterbourn said.

And when it came to the corresponding growth in children where English was not their first language, this was a wonderful element to incorporate into the school. And he was grateful to the Ministry of Education for the support it offered in ESOL support. “I’m in awe of some

Yesterday sizzled in Ashburton Two-year-old Lottie Church was keeping an eye on her one-year-old brother George at the Ashburton Domain paddling pool yesterday. The pool was packed as youngsters cooled off in hot and gusty conditions. Temperatures climbed to over 30°C and winds were recorded to be gusting around 72 kilometres per hour at 4pm. It was only the second time in 30 days that temperatures reached over 30°C in Ashburton, in what has so far been a lacklustre summer in Mid Canterbury.

New traffic lights on State Highway 1 are now operating.

NZ Transport Agency finally flicked the switch at 11am yesterday.

The lights were to have been turned on at 11am on Thursday last week, however, NZTA issued a statement later in the day saying the tactile pavers “were not in place”. The yellow pavers provide tactile and visual information to assist blind and visually impaired pedestrians to negotiate crossings.

The new lights were funded by Progressive Enterprises at a cost of about $1 million, to facilitate access to the company’s new Countdown Supermarket.

Flying high in skies over Ashburton

When Waitangi weekend rolls around the skies above Ashburton will be buzzing as about 100 aircraft from around New Zealand make the Ashburton Airport their home for the weekend.

The Ashburton Aviation Museum is hosting its biennial sport aviation national fly-in and indications are that this year’s event will be bigger and better than ever.

As well as locals who will be rolling back their hangar doors and wheeling aircraft out onto the runway, the museum team anticipates up to 100 aircraft will be flying in from around New Zealand. Those aircraft will arrive on Thursday and Friday, with competition day set down for Saturday.

Competitions involve landing, take off and circuits and the winners will be announced at a gala dinner on Sunday night.

Ahead of the dinner, pilots will be airborne in a mass fly-in to Mesopotamia Station.

The fly-in is not just about the aviators, it is a public event where people can get up close to admire aircraft and talk to pilots, many of whom have built their own planes. And for anyone inspired to buy, there will also be aircraft for sale.

Spectators can enter the air field free of charge at the aviation museum gate or can park around the perimeter of the field to admire aircraft being put through their paces in the air.

The sport aviation fly-in will be held at the Ashburton Airfield on Saturday, February 4.

Christmas elderly wishes 2016

he Christmas spirit is definitely alive in the Ashburton District.

When the Guardian put out a call for people to lend a helping hand to the elderly this festive season, the community responded in large numbers Dozens of people asked for help and dozens of people were keen to give some of their time to make the festive season a little easier for a stranger. While it is impossible to thank every person individually, our reporters have been out and about taking photos as some of those requests for help were granted.

New toilets for skiers at Mt Hutt

Skiers and snowboarders on Mt Hutt this year will have the luxury of a new interior toilet block.

The current men’s and women’s block facing the skifield car park and accessed from the outside, will be scaled down, as new toilets are constructed at the skifield base building.

The improvements are part of more than $1 million in upgrades the skifield is undertaking this summer, work supported by strong early-bird season pass sales.

Manager James McKenzie said construction of the new toilets would begin in April. The current women’s toilets would be closed

and the men’s toilet area would be upgraded and turned into women’s and men’s toilets.

These toilets would continue to be handy for people to access from the carpark, but the main toilet area would be accessed from the café, and built under the Huber’s Hut restaurant balcony.

Overall the number of toilets would increase by 10 per cent.

However, the reason behind the work was not to increase the number of toilets, but improve their standard.

“When the toilets first went in at Mt Hutt they were long drops, so we have moved on a long way since then,” McKenzie said.

The skifield is also purchasing a replacement new PistenBully

groomer costing about $550,000.

Other improvements included a once-in-20-year cable replacement on the quad chair, additional snow guns, bar and restaurant upgrade to ensure faster service, and earthworks to improve trails and snow retention in windy areas.

McKenzie said it was exciting to be undertaking the improvements, especially against a backdrop of strong early-bird season pass sales for 2017.

“It gives us some confidence in what we are doing,” McKenzie said.

The early-bird price of $299 for a season’s pass finished at midnight January 31. It then increases by $50 for a period before going to the full price closer to ski season.

NZ’ers could be exempt from travel ban New Zealanders could be exempt from US President Donald Trump’s travel ban but the government is still unsure how the controversial ruling will be applied several days after it was announced.

Foreign Minister Murray McCully is directing all visa inquiries to the US Consulate General in Auckland while the New Zealand Embassy in Washington is still “urgently” working to determine how dual nationals will be affected.

An executive order signed by Trump last week has suspended US entry for travellers from Iran, Iraq, Syria, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen for 90 days.

The 90-day suspension has been complicated by multiple US court rulings with regard to green card holders and those with valid visas to enter from those seven countries.

“We are working to ensure New Zealand dual nationals are not disadvantaged and to ensure that New Zealanders are covered by any exemptions being offered,” McCully said.

It’s believed exemptions may be in place for citizens of nations involved in the Five Eyes intelligence alliance with the US - New Zealand, Australia, Canada and the UK. British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson confirmed he had been

assured the order would make no difference to British passports holders, irrespective of their country of birth or whether they hold another passport.

Australia and Canada have also publicly confirmed exemptions, leaving New Zealand the only Five Eyes nation yet to do so.

Prime Minister Bill English says processes are under way to ensure Kiwis won’t have trouble at US borders.

As far as he’s aware no one on a Kiwi passport has so far been caught up in the uncertainty, which has caused chaos at airports around the world.

Figures weren’t immediately available on how many New Zealanders were born in or hold dual citizenship with one of the countries affected by the ban.

It’s not clear if English will discuss the travel ban or its implications for New Zealanders in a call with Trump, reportedly due to happen this week.

English said no call had been scheduled as yet, noting the process for a phone call had been “unpredictable”.

Trump has already spoken to a number of world leaders since becoming president almost two weeks ago, including Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull last week.

Sri Lankan crash injures 6 Six New Zealanders have been injured in a van crash in Sri Lanka, according to local media.

A van carrying the tourists collided with a car on at Kalalpitiya, Nittambuwa on Monday, the Daily News said.

The Sri Lankan news outlet said three males and three fe-

males, all from New Zealand, were taken to Wathupitiwala Hospital. It’s understood that their injuries are not serious.

New Zealand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFat) said it had not received any requests for consular assistance after the crash.

Holiday spike in St John assaults Rushing to save a patient having a heart attack in a Hawke’s Bay pub in December, St John’s medics instead found themselves caught in a drunken fight and roughed up and assaulted.

In Canterbury in the same month, a separate set of paramedics were kicked in the head by a patient high on drugs, while in Auckland another crew had a gun pulled on them as they helped a domestic assault victim.

The three incidents were among a continued spike in assaults on St John staff in December as 11 sought hospital treatment following serious incidents, up from five in December 2015.

St John New Zealand chief executive Peter Bradley says the increase was sadly predictable because half of all assaults on ambulance medics are alcoholfuelled.

dangers they face. Mr Bradley said the video had been a success with 500,000 views, including a large number by its main target audience of 18-to-24-year-old men.

However, he said it would take time for the video’s message to take effect, saying a similar campaign in Australia had taken about three to four months to help bring about a reduction in assaults on medics.

HPV vaccine programme to be extended A new awareness campaign about a vaccine programme at schools was launched yesterday, in a bid to help parents better understand how it can help their children.

Health Minister Dr Jonathan Coleman yesterday announced the campaign to inform parents and caregivers about HPV (human papillomavirus) immunisation.

The HPV vaccine Gardasil has already been available to girls in Year 8, but will now be extended to include boys as well.

The programme was controversial to some, as Gardasil is more

widely known to protect against cervical cancer. But HPV also causes other cancers in both men and women, according to the Science Media Centre.

Coleman said New Zealand was among a growing number of countries, including Australia, providing free HPV immunisation schemes to boys and girls.

“In Budget 2016, the Government invested an extra $124 million to enable Pharmac to further increase access to new medicines.

“Pharmac announced last July it was widening access to HPV and chickenpox vaccinations.”

HPV-related cancers caused more than 50 deaths, every year, in New Zealand, he said.

“A growing proportion of throat cancers are caused by HPV and they affect males at higher rates than females.

“Immunisation protects both males and females from most cancers caused by HPV.” Auckland University associate professor Nikki Turner, said the vaccine programme was a positive.

“Parents need to be aware that the vaccine is expected to be highly effective against a

range of very nasty cancers and against genital warts.

Turner also pointed out that vaccinating young teenagers was a better move.

“Younger people have a stronger immune response to the vaccine than as we get older. So the recommendation is that for young people under 15 years of age, they only need two doses.

“Whereas if someone misses out on getting the vaccine when they are younger, they need three doses to be as effective. This is a good reason not to delay vaccinating younger teenagers.” - NZME

Underwater eruption near Tonga A Kiwi scientist has unexpectedly discovered what appears to be a huge undersea volcanic eruption near the main island of Tonga.

For the past two years, University of Auckland coastal geomorphologist Dr Murray Ford has been using satellite images to track the evolution of a kilometre-wide island of ash and large rock fragments, created by a large eruption in December 2014 and January 2015.

But when scanning images yes-

terday, he observed a vast plume measuring 30km long and 20km wide, not far from the newlyformed island and just 33km off the coast of Tonga’s main island Tongatapu.

The plume, appearing as a greenish cloud in the ocean, was captured by the open-source US Geological Survey/NASA Landsat 8 satellite on January 27.

“It’s come out of nowhere,” said Ford, who immediately contacted

volcanologists who had recently travelled to Tonga.

“It was pretty unusual to get an image without any cloud in it - and then I saw this big, turbid plume of volcanic debris, so I checked in with our volcanologists to see what was going on.”

Satellite images analysed this afternoon showed the plume emerging early last week and growing larger.

“We are now relatively confident

that these images are representing a submarine eruption,” Scott said.

The plume appeared to have originated from a site that last erupted between December 1998 and January 1999, and which previously erupted in 1911, 1923 and 1970.

Scott said a check with the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI), showed it had not detected any signatures of volcanic gas in the atmosphere.

Undersea volcanic eruptions are not rare occurrences in the Pacific.

In November, a Royal New Zealand Air Force crew spotted a huge pumice raft across a 100km area of ocean west of the Minerva reef, about 500km southwest of Tonga, pointing to a large undersea eruption.

Scott said this month’s eruption appeared to be about 420km from the pumice seen on November 1516.

New Zealand should allow more refugees New Zealand communities should be allowed to sponsor refugees on top of the nation’s current 750 per year quota, United Future leader Peter Dunne says.

While Mr Dunne backs doubling the current baseline quota he believes there’s a smarter way to look at refugee settlement by engaging New Zealand’s community spirit.

“Up and down the country, and in my own Ohariu electorate, I see the compassion of New Zealanders welcoming refugee families and putting their hands up to help those who need support,” he said.

“Our refugee programme should engage directly with that generous and inclusive spirit and allow communities to sponsor refugees in addition to our current quota.”

A community sponsorship pilot programme, for up to 25 people, is due to be trialed this year.

Such a programme, which already exist beyond trials overseas, would still be subject to vetting and immigration security.

Expansion of the family reunification category, which currently has 300 places for families sponsoring family members, would also limit the cost to government, he said.

Energy Minister Judith Collins has signalled there could be an inquiry into rising petrol margins launched next week.

The Automobile Association today called for fuel companies to explain to motorists why the national price of fuel rose 5 cents per litre during January, despite no increase in commodity prices or a drop in the exchange rate.

Collins, who became Energy Minister at the end of 2016, said ensuring a competitive market was the best way to keep fuel costs down and she would be discussing this with Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment officials today.

“I will be taking some suggestions through to my colleagues, but I think there will be some actions announced next week,” Collins told Fairfax.

“I am, like any other person in New Zealand, concerned if these margins continue to rise when there seems little justification for it.

“I will get to the bottom of this and next week I expect to have something to anno unce.”

et ready, Ashburton. Monday’s Multi Cultural Bite is going to be a powerhouse of celebration and festivities from across the globe brought direct to the town centre.

Let’s face it, international politics involving anything to do with race, multiculturalism and immigration has been gloomy of late.

The news has been dominated with suggestions of hate, racism, travel bans, seclusion and violence, which does nothing to help us grow, develop and take positive steps forward.

The weekend’s Multi Cultural Bite is just the pick-up we need.

The event will be a beautiful celebration of the amazing cultures represented here in the region. Let’s make the most of it and celebrate diversity in all its many forms.

The vast range of cultures represented in Mid Canterbury rivals that of any other small New Zealand town.

Families from far and wide – including Argentinians, Colombians, Romanians, Japanese, Russians and Lithuanians to name just a few – have chosen to make the region their home, and are contributing to its vibrancy and positive outlook.

We have so much to learn from each other. Often, we don’t know what hardship has caused someone to move from their homeland, but whatever the case, they’ve had to make a decision to live away from loved ones and familiarity, in another foreign land.

That involves a bravery and strength that deserves to be recognised and acknowledged.

And this is why we must celebrate on Monday. To make sure everyone is welcome, feels at home and we showcase our diversity.

The cultural food and dance festival is expected to attract more than 14,000 visitors, with more than 25 stalls representing dishes in ‘bite-sized’ portions to allow your taste buds to travel the world – without leaving East Street.

So, make sure you head along on Monday and soak up all the creativity, as locals share with you the heritage, pride and passion of their homeland.

Mid Canterbury has so many fantastic attributes to admire Donna Favel

R

ecently, Selwyn District Mayor Sam Broughton and his council took the opportunity to visit Ashburton and, in particular, our newest facility, the EA Networks Centre.

The visit was a reminder to me of all the good things that this district has to offer and seemed particularly poignant while we were preparing for last week’s council workshop on building new administration and library facilities.

Often we can look at other places with envy – they have greater growth, newer facilities and the like – but the good planning and great foresight of our forebears has done this district many favours.

As a mayor, it is my job to encourage that sound planning to continue.

At last week’s workshop, it was good to see councillors coming to grips with the complexities of making major decisions that will affect future generations.

Several questions and further discussion points were generated from the meeting and I am looking forward to more robust debate when we meet again on February 23.

Another source of district pride: I was recently privileged to attend the Advance Ashburton Community Foundation’s distribution of more than $50,000 to 28 recipients in our community.

The goal of this foundation is to provide a simple, effective and long-lasting way for individuals and families to help charitable causes in the district. It raises funds through donations and legacies, invests them and then provides grants and scholarships back to the community.

Among the many worthy causes it has supported in recent years is the Ashburton Hospital’s new Rural Health Academic Centre.

It was at the launch of the centre last year that I heard young scholarship recipient Sam Ruck speak about how important it was to know that his community was behind him during his legal studies.

‘Yates, you’re fired’ President Trump fired Acting Attorney General Sally Yates yesterday, after Yates ordered Justice Department lawyers not to defend his immigration order temporarily banning entry into the United States for citizens of seven Muslim-majority countries and refugees from around the world.

In a press release, the White House said Yates had “betrayed the Department of Justice by refusing to enforce a legal order designed to protect the citizens of the United States.”

The White House has named Dana Boente, US attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, as acting attorney general.

Boente told The Washington Post that he will agree to enforce the immigration order.

Earlier yesterday, Yates ordered the Justice Department not to defend President Trump’s immigration order temporarily banning entry into the United States for citizens of seven Muslim-majority countries and refugees from around the world, declaring in a memo that she is not convinced the order is lawful.

Yates wrote that, as the leader of the Justice Department, she must ensure that the department’s position is “legally defensible” and “consistent with this institution’s solemn obligation to always seek justice and stand for what is right.”

“At present, I am not convinced that the defense of the Executive Order is consistent with these responsibilities nor am I convinced that the Executive Order is lawful,” Yates wrote.

She wrote that “for as long as I am the Acting Attorney General, the Department of Justice will not present arguments in defense of the Executive Order, unless and until I become convinced that it is appropriate to do so.”

Also yesterday, State Department diplomats circulated various drafts of a memo objecting to Trump’s order, which was issued Friday.

The document is destined for what’s known as the department’s Dissent Channel, which was set up during the Vietnam War as a way for diplomats to signal to senior leadership their disagreement on foreign policy decisions.

More than 100 diplomats have signed the memo, which argues that the immigration ban will not deter attacks on American soil but will generate ill will toward US citizens.

What will happen next is unclear.

A Justice Department official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said those who would normally defend the order under Yates’s authority can no longer do so.

Yates will probably be replaced soon by Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.), Trump’s attorney general nominee, who could be confirmed as early as Thursday or Friday.

The Senate Judiciary Committee is scheduled to consider his nomination Tuesday, and the entire Senate must wait one day before voting.

A White House spokeswoman did not immediately return an email seeking comment.

White House domestic policy adviser Stephen Miller said on MSNBC that Yates’s decision was “a further demonstration of how politicised our legal system has become.”

“It’s sad that our politics have become so politicised that you have people refusing to enforce our laws,” Miller said.

A Justice Department official familiar with the matter said Yates felt she was in an “impossible situation” and had been struggling with what to do about a measure she did not consider lawful.

A Justice official confirmed over the weekend that the department’s office of legal counsel had been asked to review the measure to determine if it was “on its face lawful and properly drafted.”

In her memo, though, Yates said her role was broader.

She wrote that an office of legal counsel review does “not address whether any policy

choice embodied in an Executive Order is wise or just,” nor does it “take account of statements made by an administration or its surrogates close in time to the issuance of an Executive Order that may bear on the order’s purpose.”

That could be a reference to Trump’s campaign trail comments about a “Muslim ban” or the recent assertion

by Trump surrogate Rudolph W. Giuliani that the president had asked him “the right way to do it legally.”

Yates’s memo came as civil rights lawyers and others across the country increased the pressure on Trump to dial back the ban – filing or threatening to file legal challenges to the executive order as they worked to determine if people were still being improperly denied entry or detained.

The defiant legal conclusion from the country’s top law enforcement official will surely boost their arguments.

Lee Gelernt, deputy director of the ACLU’s Immigrants’ Rights Project, who worked on one of the legal challenges, said, “It sends a very strong message that there’s something very wrong with the Muslim ban.”

Barton drugged, disorderly Disturbing footage of a drugged Mischa Barton has emerged, showing the actor “erratic” and screaming after she had been given GHB. Masterpiece stolen with disconcerting ease An art thief had all the climbing skills of Spiderman, a French court was told yesterday.

Yet he needed none of them to walk off with more than $100 million worth of masterpieces – including a Matisse, Picasso and Modigliani – from a Paris museum with “disconcerting ease”.

An alleged accomplice has claimed he later threw the lot into a rubbish bin in a moment of panic.

derman nickname stems from his ability to scale buildings to rob apartments, was accused of stealing five paintings after he broke into the Musee d’Art Moderne opposite the Eiffel Tower in May 2010, in what has been described as one of the biggest painting thefts in recent years.

But in an ironic twist, all Tomic had to do was break one pane of glass and a puny padlock to carry out his daring heist, a special Paris court for serious financial crimes was told.

Presiding judge Peimane Ghalez-Marzban lamented the “disconcerting ease” in which the athletic thief evaded “defective” security to steal the “priceless” mastepieces whose value “far surpasses their market value”.

Paris city hall put the total value of the haul at $100m but some experts said they were worth twice that amount.

the thief was able to move around freely without them noticing the thief.

The guards said they had switched off the alarms as they kept going off at the slightest movement.

During questioning, Tomic told police he had initially broken into the museum only to steal a Fernand Leger work – the 1922 painting titled Still Life with Candlestick – but once inside was “surprised” when the burglary alarm failed to sound.

Guns N’ Roses have arrived It’s a big welcome to the concrete jungle for rockers Guns N’ Roses yesterday.

The band touched down in Wellington yesterday for the first stop of their latest New Zealand tour. Wellington Airport posted a photo to Twitter, writing: “Legends @gunsnroses have arrived ahead of their Wellington concert”. The group arrived in their own private plane, which has their logo – two guns and two roses in a bloody circle – emblazoned across it six times. Not In This Lifetime is the latest tour for the band, which formed in 1985.

New record for tourism, immigration

Spotcap to enter NZ market Spotcap, a Berlin-based lender to small and medium-sized businesses, is to enter the New Zealand market offering unsecured credit lines and business loans of up to $250,000.

At the same time, Heartland Bank announced a funding facility for Spotcap Australia that it says will help grow its presence across the Tasman.

Spotcap, which operates in Australia, the UK, and mainland Europe, was founded in 2014 by chief executive Jens Woloszczak.

It can provide unsecured loans

to qualifying firms “on the basis of a quick yet rigorous credit assessment of a firm’s financial condition, using a combination of a unique proprietary credit algorithm and expert underwriters,” according to its website.

Heartland raised $20 million last month to support its digital strategy and maintain its capital ratio. Today, chief executive Jeff Greenslade said the partnership with Spotcap “provides Heartland with the opportunity to gain exposure to online SME lending in Australia and support an innova-

tive fintech solution that aligns with some of Heartland’s key strategic priorities including expanding its digital strategy and growing its presence in Australia”.

“We are delighted to gain further exposure to online SME lending and look forward to working with Spotcap to grow its Australian operations,” he said.

Heartland shares last traded at $1.56 and have gained 27 per cent in the past 12 months, outpacing the S&P/NZX 50 Index’s 15 per cent gain.

Vodafone becomes a 51 per cent majority shareholder in Sky TV, in what amounts to a reverse takeover.

The pay-TV operator will borrow $1.8b from Vodafone to fund the purchase, repay existing debt and use for working capital.

The agreement allowed for an interim dividend of up to 10 cents per share and the two companies have agreed to alter the deal to allow the larger return.

The amendment means Sky TV’s cash portion of the Vodafone acquisition will increase to reflect the 5 cents per share difference.

The transaction still needs Commerce Commission approval.

Sky TV shares last traded at $4.68.

Hellers, New Zealand’s biggest producer of bacon, ham and smallgoods, has acquired family owned packaged foods business Gramart Foods, which trades as Flavour House, for an undisclosed amount.

The purchase follows collaborations between the two companies on products such as Hellers “sweet and sticky” pork ribs and My Main Course range of prepackaged meal bases.

Gramart was founded by the Titheridge family in 2001 and has 12 staff.

Hellers, which sells more than 28,000 tonnes of products a year through retail and foodservice channels, has been expanding since Wellington-based investor Rangitira bought into the business in 2003.

Rangatira increased its stake to 62.5 per cent from 50 per cent in December 2015, paying $9.5 million for the extra shares and valuing its holding at $52.2 million. The increased stake meant Hellers became a subsidiary and Rangatira booked a $36.3m fairvalue gain in its 2016 accounts.

Sky Network Television will pay an early interim dividend ahead of the planned merger with Vodafone New Zealand and raise the cash portion of its acquisition of the telecommunications carrier to reflect a bigger return than their agreement provided for.

Auckland-based Sky TV will pay 15 cents per share, or $58.4 million, on February 22 to shareholders on the register on February 15, it said.

The announcement was released ahead of Sky TV’s firsthalf result to enable a return to shareholders ahead of the planned transaction with Vodafone.

Last month, Sky TV warned earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation for the year ending June 30, is expected to be 5-7 per cent below the $296m forecast it gave in June. It paid an interim dividend of 15 cents in 2016.

New Zealand saw record numbers of tourists and immigrants in 2016 with more migrants coming in on work visas and more holidaymakers than ever before, and economists expect migrant inflows to keep rising.

Annual net migration hit 70,600 in December 2016, with the biggest net migrant gains from China, India, the UK and the Philippines.

Migrant arrivals rose 4 per cent to 127,300 in the year, also a new record, while migrant departures dipped 0.5 per cent to 56,700.

Short-term visitor arrivals, reached 3.5 million in the year ended December 31, up 12 pe rcent from the year earlier, Statistics New Zealand said.

More ways with courgettes W

6 courgettes, finely sliced 1 chilli, chopped 1t dried oregano 5 eggs 1C milk 1/2 C self-raising flour 1C tasty cheese, grated

hen they’re out of season or first in season, courgettes are a beautiful thing, but if you’re a gardener and put in a plant or two in the first flush of spring, you’ll be all but drowning in courgettes right now.

The Guardian is putting up some courgette recipes again this week to give you some more ideas for the plentiful vegetable.

While they’re incredibly versatile, they’re not the tastiest available and once you’ve had your fill of sauted, stir-fried or grated courgettes, you’re usually in need of new ways to use your surplus crop.

Like any mild-flavoured vegetable, courgettes marry well with a host of herbs, spices, meats and other vegetables.

■ ■

■ Preheat oven to 180°C. ■ Heat oil in a pan and gently cook the chopped onion, bacon and garlic.

■ Add finely sliced courgettes, chilli and oregano and cook for a further minute.

■ Whisk eggs and milk together and season with salt and pepper.

■ Mix together the courgettes, flour, egg mixture and cheese.

■ Pour mixture into a greased 22cm round pie dish and bake in oven for 25 to 30 minutes.

■ Stand for 10 minutes before serving.

Courgette fritters

Cheesy courgette muffins

4T oil 1 red onion, finely chopped 1 clove garlic, finely chopped 5 courgettes, grated 1T parsley, finely chopped 2T fresh basil, chopped 200g ricotta cheese 2 eggs, lightly beaten 1/2 C flour ■ Heat 1T of the oil in a frying pan and gently cook chopped onion and garlic until softened.

■ Squeeze out as much moisture as possible from the grated courgettes.

■ Combine courgettes, onion, parsley, basil and ricotta in a bowl.

■ Add lightly-beaten eggs and flour and season with salt and pepper.

■ Mix until well combined.

■ Heat remaining 3T oil in a frypan.

■ Cook large spoonfuls of batter until cooked through and golden

brown on both sides.

Courgette pickle 1.8kg courgettes, thinly sliced 500g onions, thinly sliced 1/2 C salt 4C apple cider vinegar 2C white sugar 2t mustard seeds 2t celery seeds 2t ground turmeric 2t mustard powder

■ Drain and then let drip for about 15 minutes.

■ Place in a saucepan.

■ Boil together the rest of the ingredients.

■ Pour over the zucchini and onion and stand for 1 hour.

■ Place over a medium heat, bring to the boil and boil for 4 minutes.

■ Bottle in hot jars.

2C plain flour 4t baking powder 1/2 t salt Black pepper to taste 1C grated tasty cheese 1/4 C grated parmesan 3/4 C milk 2 eggs 3 courgettes (250g) grated ■ Preheat the oven to 210°C with the rack just below the middle.

■ Grate unpeeled courgettes and squeeze out as much liquid as possible.

■ Sift or fork the first four ingredients together in a large bowl.

■ Add the pepper and cheese and stir to combine.

■ In another bowl, beat together the milk and eggs with a fork, then stir courgettes.

■ Tip the liquid mixture into the large bowl, and combine the in-

gredients, folding together. Stop mixing while the mixture still looks rough and lumpy.

Coat the muffin tins with nonstick spray or brush with oil.

Fill tins and bake for 12 to 15 minutes.

Tops should be golden brown and the centres spring back when pressed.

Leave for 2 to 3 minutes before transferring from the tins to a rack.

Courgettes and pasta 4 eggs 500g pasta 2T olive oil 1 small onion, finely chopped 2 cloves garlic 4 slices bacon, sliced Sliced courgettes 100g parmesan cheese, grated finely 100ml cream 1C chopped parsley with a little thyme Salt and pepper ■ Cook pasta per the packet instructions.

■ In a large frying pan heat the oil and add the onion, garlic and bacon.

■ Cook for 4 or 5 minutes until slightly coloured.

■ Add the courgettes and cook for a further 2 or 3 minutes.

■ In a small bowl, beat the eggs with a fork lightly and add the cheese, cream and herbs.

■ Add plenty of freshly ground pepper and salt to taste.

■ Drain the pasta, and add to the onion mix.

■ Toss through. Turn off the heat, and add the egg mixture to the pan.

■ Stir until well combined.

■ Serve straight from the pan with a little extra parmesan on top and freshly ground pepper.

1 lemon, cut into wedges 1 red onion, cut into wedges 1 Tegel Fresh Whole Chicken 2T olive oil 1T finely chopped rosemary 1 bulb garlic, cloves separated, unpeeled 1C chicken stock 1/2 C dry white wine Extra rosemary for garnish Polenta: 2C chicken stock 2C milk 1C instant polenta 1/2 C grated parmesan 10g butter Freshly ground black pepper ■ Preheat the oven to 180°C. ■ Place the lemon and red onion inside the cavity of the Tegel Fresh Whole Chicken. Rub the olive oil on the chicken then sprinkle with the rosemary and season with salt and pepper. Place the chicken into a roasting dish. Add the garlic, chick-

en stock and wine.

■ Roast the chicken for 1 1/2 hours or until the juices run clear when pierced through the thickest part of the thigh. Baste occasionally. Leave to stand for 10 minutes before carving.

■ Serve the chicken on a bed of polenta. Drizzle the pan juices and the garlic cloves over the chicken.

Squeeze the garlic cloves to release the creamy garlic. Garnish with extra rosemary. Serve with seasonal vegetables.

■ Polenta: Place the extra chicken stock and milk into a saucepan.

Bring to the boil then add the polenta in a steady stream, stirring constantly. Simmer for 3 to 4 minutes or until it is thick and creamy.

Stir in the parmesan and butter and season with black pepper. Keep warm.

Tennis finds its true GOAT T

hey called it the Flashback Slam, but there wasn’t much archaic about what we witnessed from the Rod Laver Arena on Sunday night.

And when Roger Federer crashed to the court after a gruelling five-set battle with Rafael Nadal and broke down into a bumbling, emotional heap – you just knew you were watching something special.

For months now the speculation has been that these two superstars of the tennis court were nearing the end of it.

The seemingly invisible aura around them that had been there for most of their careers was flickering like a candle in the wind and so close to being extinguished that there seemed no hope.

Guys like Novak and Murray had surpassed them in terms of greatness.

The two old boys’ hopes were faltering.

But as the old saying goes that form is temporary and class is permanent, the pair rose from the ashes to produce one the nail-biting finales in world tennis.

And a match that ended in a Hawk-Eye decision.

And as the world zeroed in on the computer graphic shot of the ball flying and landing on the line to confirm a Federer success, you could hear the world cheer.

People from all corners were willing it to be good.

And good it was.

Almost as good as the match itself.

Federer’s emotion and joy was special to behold.

He hasn’t been that uncontrollable with his feelings since he lost to Nadal in 2009 – incidentally on the same court – but his 18th Grand Slam victory had a little bit more to it than the 17 previous.

He went to Australia without the expectation of the world on his shoulders.

No one really predicted him to win this tournament.

But he did.

And for it to come against Nadal – one of his greatest rivals, the 35-year-old couldn’t have scripted it better.

Collectively it’s been Nadal who has had the edge too.

Their 13-year-old rivalry has seen them bump racquets on 35 occasions.

Nadal has been the dominant force winning 23 of those matches.

So once again the odds were stacked in his favour on Sunday night.

Many consider the 2008 Wimbledon final – a four-hour slug-a-thon in which Nadal emerged victorious as the greatest game of tennis ever player – but somehow, even if it is for stoic reasons, Sunday night’s match will be viewed by many as the match to at least surpass, if not equal it.

And now, for Federer at least anyway, what happens next doesn’t matter.

After a long absence from the Grand Slam podium, he’s back there.

The tennis world is his once more.

And what he chooses to do with the success and the form, is almost irrelevant because now those who believed that he couldn’t do it are left to ponder why they ever doubted one of the greatest of all time.

Wenger hails Arsenal soccer strike force

By Mark Mann-Bryans Arsene Wenger believes he boasts the best attacking unit he has ever had at Arsenal – with his current crop of forwards eclipsing even the ‘Invincibles’.

While names such as Thierry Henry, Dennis Bergkamp, Robin van Persie and Ian Wright have all been managed by Wenger during his two-decade reign in charge of the Gunners, the Frenchman reckons his 2017 strike force is the strongest collection he has assembled to date.

Wenger saw Danny Welbeck return from a serious knee injury to score twice in the 5-0 FA Cup win at Southampton on Saturday – before Theo Walcott struck a hat- trick to seal an impressive victory.

Olivier Giroud boasts five goals in his past six appearances while summer signing Lucas Perez has hit six goals this season despite finding his first-team chances limited.

Add to that the 15 Premier League goals from Alexis Sanchez, who is tied with Chelsea’s Diego Costa as the division’s top scorer so far this season, and Wenger’s suggestion starts to makes sense.

There may be statues to Henry and Bergkamp outside the Emirates Stadium and the likes of van Persie, Wright, Sylvain Wiltord, Emmanuel Adebayor, Robert Pires and Freddie Ljungberg may have all weighed in with plenty of goals during their Arsenal careers – but the 67-year-old feels he now has a stronger attacking contingent than at any previous time at the helm.

Chelsea close to title The English Premier League title race will be all but over if Chelsea win their next two matches against Liverpool and Arsenal, says Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino. Pochettino, whose Spurs side face bottom-of-thetable Sunderland at the Stadium overnight, is likely to have one eye on how Chelsea fare at Liverpool.

Antonio Conte’s side will see their title credentials firmly tested, first at Anfield, and then five days later when they host rivals Arsenal.

But Pochettino believes victory in both matches could be enough for Chelsea to clinch the title.

“No doctor can tell you it is March or January.

“He was ahead of schedule so after sometimes you have a congestion there as some players come back quicker than expected.

An $11 million offer to lure Socceroos midfielder Aaron Mooy away from Manchester City has reportedly been knocked back by the English Premier League giants.

French Open next target

Comeback still on the agenda

By Darren Walton Roger Federer has ruled out skipping the French Open to save himself for Wimbledon as he hunts down more major silverware.

The resurgent Swiss made it clear he wouldn’t be playing on for second prizes after being buoyed by his return to the top 10 in the wake of his unexpected Australian Open triumph.

The rankings boost will allow him to pick and choose a lighter schedule in 2017 without worrying about chasing points to retain seeding status at the big events.

“If I would have lost first round (in Melbourne), I would have dropped outside of the top 30.

“Now winning, I’m back in the top 10. It’s that’s crazy,” Federer said before flying home for some well-earned r&r.

“So it gives me options for the remainder of the season – good options and then it’s important to play with fire and be hungry.

“You have to play that way.

Just spending time on tour is not good enough.”

A 10-times finalist on the All England Club lawns, Federer swatted away suggestions he may bypass Paris – as he did last year – to have another big crack at landing an eighth Wimbledon crown.

“I don’t see that because now we have an extra week on the grass, so I don’t see myself skipping the French,” he said.

“My goal needs to be to stay healthy.

“So when I do go on court that, really, it’s a highlight.

“I know you can’t make 25 tournaments a highlight, but you can make 15 a highlight and really be well prepared for those and enjoy it in the process.

“I have a month now until the tournament in Dubai comes around.

“So that’s going to give me some time to reflect and see how I will attack the rest of the season.”

In wiping out Tomas Berdych, Kei Nishikori, Stan Wawrinka before toppling Rafael Nadal in the Melbourne Park final on Sunday night, Federer became the first man since Mats Wilander at the 1982 French Open to beat four top-10 rivals en route to a grand slam title.

Roger Federer has every intention of getting his hands on more tennis silverware.

“It was definitely special on so many levels,” Federer said of his 18th major win.

“Being the oldest guy to win the Australian Open for some time now. That’s maybe almost the least of things that I think about.

“I see the comeback (from six months out of the game) as a such a beautiful thing.

“Then I see the epic match with Nadal, playing three five-setters during the tournament. I never thought that my body would be able to handle that.

“And then just beating these top-10 players along the way, that just makes this a super special tournament and one that I’ll remember maybe the most.”

Federer humbled to join sport’s greatest

By Darren Walton Roger Federer is too humble to rank himself among sport’s alltime greatest athletes but admits he’s honoured to be in the conversation.

In matching Jack Nicklaus’s magical 18 golf majors at an age most players are long retired and his peers are at the peak of their own powers, the superstar has sparked fresh debate around who deserves the mantle of best in sport.

The 35-year-old is undoubtedly the Pele, Ali, Nicklaus, Jordan or Bolt of the court after pulling four majors clear of Rafael Nadal and Pete Sampras on the all-time grand slam title leaderboard.

Federer, though, says it’s not his role to judge or compare where he belongs in the argument.

“Crossing sports or even comparing players, I mean, what’s better – is it doing something later on your career?

“Is it better to do something

earlier in your life?” Federer told AAP as he savoured his remarkable Australian Open final triumph over Rafael Nadal.

“What I do admire is longevity and making the game more popular and the ones you’ve mentioned have done that in their respective sports.

“And I think Sunday was a celebration of tennis and it was great to be part of that. It was beautiful.

“To be compared to different athletes is great, but it’s unknown

really to yourself to know the magnitude you have in the sporting world.”

Federer said his return to the grand slam winners’ list for the first time since 2012 and in his first official tournament back after six months out recovering from a knee injury was “special on so many fronts”.

“It tastes better when you have to wait for a while and then when you finally get it, I think the joy is different,” he said.

When even Tiger Woods’s archcritic is declaring that there are many positives to take from the 14-time major-winner’s fifthworst performance in his 21-year career, then it is obvious how much golf has invested in the successful return of its superstar.

Yet, in fairness to Brandel Chamblee, the former PGA Tour winner turned Golf Channel analyst, he was saying only what many were thinking, after Woods missed the cut at the Farmers Insurance Open.

Granted, the 41-year-old had previously won at Torrey Pines eight times and just a few years ago, it would be impossible to think of a 76-72 return in San Diego as anything other than a disaster.

Yet that only shows the depths from where Woods is attempting to launch his comeback, after almost 18 months on the side-lines due to multiple back operations.

Afterwards, Woods spoke of “being rusty” and of “making dumb mistakes”, and intimated that his mind is on fixing the flaws in time for Augusta in April.

The forthcoming tournaments will all be about continuing the day-to-day progress he showed in California, starting with the Dubai Desert Classic on Thursday.

The improvements effected by Woods in just 24 hours were written on the stats sheets.

He hit only four of 14 fairways on the South Course, but on the North Course, missed only four.

Chamblee, an erudite character who has repeatedly slated Woods for committing “self-mutilation” with his swing, was uncharacteristically impressed.

“On Thursday, his swing was under plane and he was going to miss it right and right time and time again. Friday, he did a much a better job of getting his hands in front of him on the way down.

“Was it as good as Tiger Woods at his best? No, nowhere near.

“But we are holding him to the greatest standard of golf we’ve ever seen.

“But there’s a lot of good news to take to Dubai.”

Of course, the most important source for optimism is his health.

Woods admitted beforehand that there were fears how his spine would hold up to four tournaments in five weeks, but in the first of these, there were seemingly no problems.

“Tiger looked great physically, didn’t grab his back once, which was great news,” Chamblee said.

Woods appeared and sounded more content than ever before, after missing the cut (this was his 16th time) and claimed that his sole fear was the gruelling, first-class trip to the United Arab Emirates.

“My only concern is I’ve got a long flight,” Woods said. “How is my body going to handle the flight? It’s 17 hours, but it’s all good.”

Guptill to miss second ODI New Zealand opening batsman Martin Guptill will miss the second one-day cricket international of the Chappell-Hadlee series in Napier, after feeling tightness in his hamstring during the opening match in Auckland on Monday.

Coach Mike Hesson said it was a minor strain but, as a precaution, Guptill won’t be considered for selection.

“Martin felt tightness in his left hamstring while fielding yesterday and, after being monitored over the last 24 hours, it’s become apparent he won’t be ready for Napier.

“If you want 100 runs off 10 overs anywhere in the world, it’s probably Eden Park.

We certainly got hit to areas we didn’t want to, but [second match venue] McLean Park is different again, so it comes down to our ability to adapt.

“It’s difficult to have a perfect performance against the No.1 side in the world, so to get a result is pleasing.

“We had to fight a few times, especially with the bat, to get a score which took experience, craft and skill at the end.

“It wasn’t a complete performance, but it was a workable one.”

A thumb injury will rule White Ferns allrounder Sophie Devine out of the coming home and away cricket series against Australia. The bighitting Devine suffered the injury while playing for Adelaide Strikers in the women’s Big Bash League.

Goldolphin boss impressed John Ferguson finally found a window in his hectic schedule to make his Karaka debut this week and his only regret was that he wasn’t able to find the time to visit sooner.

“Sir Peter Vela has been trying to get me here for 20 years or more and I’m thrilled to have made it,” said the chief executive and racing manager for Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum’s Godolphin operation.

“I’ve loved every second of New Zealand and while it’s not got the biggest thoroughbred population, it’s one of the best and it has been great to have been part of that at last.”

Under the Godolphin banner, Ferguson signed for three Savabeel fillies during the Premier session – one out of Banchee for $750,000, the daughter of Sitting Pretty for $350,000 and the other from Croix du Sud for $120,000.

“I arrived 10 days before the sale and I was able to have a look around some farms and went from Taupo to Queenstown, it’s been wonderful,” the Newmarket-based Ferguson said.

“I was here to buy a couple of New Zealand-breds and we got three lovely fillies.”

Ferguson also announced that the internationally-successful blue racing silks of Godolphin could be seen in New Zealand in the not too distant future.

Ferguson flew out of New Zealand last night and has vowed to return on future Godolphin buying and racing expeditions.

“It’s been a fantastic experience and Karaka is the best facility in the world, no doubt about that,” he said.

Due diligence pays dividends for Ellis The many hours that Te Akau Racing boss David Ellis puts in behind the scenes in the buildup to the annual NZB National Yearling sale paid a handsome dividend yesterday when he secured his self-described ‘colt of the sale’ during the selling action at Karaka.

Ellis and his team set out to inspect every catalogued yearling on at least one occasion, and often several times more, before the sale commences.

Amongst the individuals that Ellis surveyed during that exercise was Lot 312, the handsome Exceed And Excel colt from New Zealand 1000 Guineas runner-up Oasis Rose who was consigned

by Karaka legend Sir Patrick Hogan through his Cambridge Stud draft.

Ellis admitted that this was a colt he had inspected well in excess of his normal average.

“I first saw this colt as a foal at Cambridge Stud,” he divulged.

“Since then I’ve probably had the opportunity to see him at least another ten times before he went into the ring today.

The four-year-old, who won the VRC Oaks in the spring of 2015 and won last year’s Caulfield Cup, worked from the 2000m mark to the 1200m. Oaks hope ‘needs to win’ Angeline will need a decent excuse to continue her classic campaign if she doesn’t further her record at Hastings today.

Trainer Shaune Ritchie has high expectations of the filly in the Bostock New Zealand 2000 from his Gr.1 Wellfield New Zealand Oaks hope.

“She needs to be winning, if not extremely competitive in that field,” the Cambridge trainer said.

“She drops back in class, obviously, and we’re going to apply the blinkers just to sharpen her up and allow her to race handier.”

A daughter of Cape Blanco out of the Gr.2 Wellington Cup winner Megapins, Angeline ran fourth in the Gr.3 Eulogy Stakes two runs back before she was out of luck when unplaced in the Gr.2 Royal Stakes.

At Ellerslie, she went back from the outside gate and then had little chance in a slowly-run race.

“She’s had some horrific draws, but from barrier three this time she should be able to position up a lot better,” Ritchie said.

“Horses that win the Oaks don’t lose races like this.”

Meanwhile, Ritchie’s other classic contender Devise is in good touch after her fourth placing in the Gr.2 Eight Carat Classic followed by a strong run for second behind Nicoletta in the Gr.3 Desert Gold Stakes at Trentham last Saturday.

Smith to stay with NZ rugby All Blacks fullback Ben Smith is set to re-sign with New Zealand Rugby, after turning down a lucrative offer from French side Pau, according to a French newspaper.

Midi Olympique reports the Highlanders co-captain was courted by former All Blacks Conrad Smith and Colin Slade, along with coach Simon Mannix, but has decided the stay in New Zealand, with his eye on the 2019 Rugby World Cup in Japan.

The 30-year-old Smith has played 60 tests for the All Blacks since his debut in 2009, becoming a regular starter in 2012. He played in 12 of the All Blacks’ 13 tests last year.

Overseas clubs have been chasing Smith, who was also linked to Irish side Munster, along with All Blacks team-mate Israel Dagg, who is also off contract following the Lions tour in June.

Smith and wife Katie revealed in the NZ Woman’s Weekly this week they are expecting their second child this year.

Much of your time will be spent visiting customers and distributors spread across New Zealand, and in representing our company at shows and exhibitions. A full drivers licence and flexibility to travel regularly are therefore also required.

Close mentoring and supervision will be provided initially as you settle into the role and learn our products and culture. You will also attend relevant training courses as required.

Thurston confirms debut

By Laine CLark Johnathan Thurston will make his long awaited Auckland Nines debut this weekend after North Queensland confirmed his selection yesterday.

Thurston will finally be unleashed at Eden Park after missing the first three Auckland campaigns, sharing the Nines captaincy reins with Queensland back-rower Gavin Cooper.

Thurston spearheads a strong squad also featuring Dally M Medallist Jason Taumalolo, Kangaroos utility Michael Morgan, Queensland flyer Justin O’Neill, NRL prodigy Kalyn Ponga and Maroons wing contender Kyle Feldt.

The inaugural 2014 Nines champions have also named recruits ex-Melbourne playmaker Ben Hampton and former Titans back-rower Shane Wright.

Back-rower Ethan Lowe has been named to make his return after a spinal injury ended his 2016 finals campaign.

While excited about Thurston’s Nines debut, Cowboys coach Paul Green was also looking forward to watching his youngsters run out on to Eden Park.

Queensland Emerging Origin back-rower Coen Hess, flyer Gideon Gela-Mosby, Shaun Hudson and young lock Corey Jensen also feature in the Cowboys squad.

“I always said this Nines squad would allow some of the younger guys and newer faces at our club the chance to impress,” Green said.

“The squad’s a good mix of the lesser experienced players with the guys who have played a bit more footy, and who do well in this format.

“I think the Nines is a great tournament.

It’s a little bit less pressure and everyone seems to be in a more relaxed mood, from the coaches to the players.”

The Cowboys fly out for Auckland on Wednesday.

They play Nines pool games against Sydney Roosters, Canberra and South Sydney.

Ngatai in doubt again The future of Chiefs Super Rugby midfielder Charlie Ngatai remains up in the air as he continues to battle the symptoms of a serious concussion.

The one-test All Black suffered a head knock against the Highlanders in May and has not played a game since then, missing the remainder of the Super Rugby season and New Zealand’s national provincial championship. Chiefs coach Dave Rennie told reporters that the 26-year-old was not back in full training and could miss the entire competition. “Richie McCaw went through this when he was out for 12 months; his health is the most important here so we are not going to rush it,” Rennie said.

First win a stunner

The tale of how Tutoko Kid came to win his maiden race at Motukarara on Sunday is not your traditional harness racing success story.

In fact it couldn’t be much further from the usual.

But when the ghostly grey, trained by Ashburton horsewoman, Kelley Duncan, found clear air and powered home over the top of his rivals to win at odds of $63-to-one, he proved that there is no true proven formula for the path to success.

It was Duncan’s first success as a trainer, but not her first harness racing victory as she and her husband Brent had enjoyed success in the past as owners with Grant Lea, who won five races out of the Maxine Green stable.

They bred Tutoko Kid after being on the lookout for a grey standardbred mare to breed to one of Duncan’s arab stallions with a view to producing an

endurance horse – another passion of hers.

Bred from a mare who was initially sourced to breed to Arab stallions to produce endurance horses the big son of Klondike Kid has taken plenty of time to fill out his big frame.

“There has been times where I’ve wondered if he would make it,” Duncan admitted.

“He’s a bit of a laid-back sort of horse and probably not that competitive so it’s been a case of trying different things with him along the way.”

After qualifying and racing a few times without success, Duncan decided to put a bit of variety into the life of the big grey and took him and trained him last summer to become an endurance horse.

She rode him over long distances in some of the most serene trekking spots available in the South Island.

“We had a bit of success with Grant Lea when we took him and started riding him and

“It’s just a case of trying to keep things different I think.

“They seem to enjoy that.”

After his stint as a saddle horse, Tutoko Kid returned to training and although results weren’t instant there was enough promise there.

As the first horse Duncan has trained, she relied on the advice and teachings of others to help along the way and said that if it hadn’t have been for that help they wouldn’t have achieved Sunday’s Motukarara victory.

“We’ve been incredibly lucky,” she said.

“Carl and Lyn Markham did a great job getting him up and going and qualified, then Nigel Perkins gave me plenty of help too.

“And then, recently, we have been really lucky to have had some ideas and tips from Colin DeFilippi and he produced a

great drive to get him up on Sunday.

“It was a great thrill, half way down the straight I was thinking we were going to get a fourth or fifth and it was going to be great, but he just kept coming.”

The Duncans will continue their march forward this weekend when Tutoko Kid lines up at the Ashburton Trotting Club meeting on Saturday – a foray on the home track.

Then there’s the brothers and sisters to Tutoko Kid at home to get excited about too.

“There’s a full brother, he’s going to take a bit more time I think because he’s a big lump of a horse too.

“And the latest is a filly by Ohoka Arizona.

“We had to go to a smaller stallion because the mare kept producing such big foals.”

Duncan’s not sure if she will end up training the siblings or not though.

“I don’t know if the nerves can take it or not,” she laughed.

Former NZ Kiwis skipper Benji Marshall will make his Brisbane Broncos debut at this weekend’s NRL Auckland Nines. Controversial flyer James Roberts also features in a star-studded Broncos squad.
