Death of baby investigated A return to top form P18

Police are investigating the sudden death of a two-month-old baby in Rakaia on Saturday.

Senior Sergeant Scott Banfield, of Ashburton, said police were notified that a baby had passed away suddenly in Rakaia at about midday on Saturday.

“It is being treated as a sudden death by the Coronial Services Team.

“We have police and detectives making a wide range of inquiries in relation

to that,” Senior Sergeant Banfield said.

Some time over the next few days forensics will have completed their investigations and the Coronial Services Team will have more information about what happened, he said.

“A number of police inquiries have been made.”

They will not know anything more until after these investigations, Senior Sergeant Banfield said.

New classroom for Wakanui School Wakanui School is the latest Mid Canterbury school to have the building of a new classroom approved.

The news, which came at the end of the 2015 school year, couldn’t have come soon enough for the school’s principal Hilary Boyce.

This week they’ll start the school year with 125 students, well up from around 100 at the start of 2015.

It’s growth that is projected to continue, meaning that even with a new classroom, the school’s library is likely to be used as a classroom for some time yet.

“We started using the library when we needed the fourth classroom, and by the time we got the fourth classroom built, we needed a fifth,” Ms Boyce said.

“Once we get the fifth classroom built I’m not even sure the library will go back to being a library. We will just have to wait and see.”

The new classroom will be a design build, rather than a modular classroom, but it was not yet known when building would start.

“Unfortunately you can’t just click your fingers and it will appear,” Ms Boyce said.

Other country schools are also growing, although not with numbers as big as Wakanui.

At Mt Somers Springburn School, they’ll start with a roll of 88, up from 82 at the start of 2015, while Longbeach will start with 130, a similar number to last year.

The starting roll at Dorie School will be 63, up from 58 at the same time last year, and Carew Peel Forest’s starting roll is 74, up two on last year’s.

Lauriston School will start with a roll in the 80s.

Mid Canterbury GPs are being kept busy with an average of nearly 2000 patients each on their books.

The average number of patients to doctors in Mid Canterbury sits around one for every 1700 people.

The number is significantly higher than the historical national average of one to 1400.

In the district there is the fulltime equivalent of 18.2 doctors at eight practices, catering to more than 30,000 people enrolled with the Rural Canterbury Primary Health Organisation (RCPHO) and the Pegasus Health Primary Health Organisation.

Methven Medical Centre is under the umbrella of the Pegasus PHO and currently has 2.5 fulltime equivalent doctors and a nurse practitioner who cater to 4000 patients.

The RCPHO caters to the other seven practices in Mid Canterbury which currently cater to 27,019 patients, up from 26,888 in October.

Pipe bands march under a sunny sky More than 100 people made the most of the first sunny day in Ashburton this week to watch participants in a pipe band festival at the Ashburton Domain yesterday. Pipe bands came from as far away as North Canterbury and North Otago for the annual event.

Organiser Derek Cullimore said seven were set to compete but two had to pull out due to unforeseen circumstances.

The bands marched along Elizabeth Street before gathering in the domain picnic area off Grigg Street for a competition which included a medley and set piece.

“It was a very pleasant afternoon,” he said.

erbury doctors busy RCPHO chief executive Bill Eschenbach said within the seven practices there was a ratio of 1721 patients per doctor, up from 1713 in October.

“We try to balance our obligations with seeing enrolled patients along with trying to fit in unenrolled patients where possible,” he said.

“Our resources are mainly consumed with servicing the health requirements of our enrolled patients.”

As there is no longer a national recommendation for doctor to patient ratios, it is up to individual practices to decide on their own enrolment numbers.

The Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners (RNZCGP) told the Guardian there were many reasons there was no longer a recommended ratio.

This included projected population growth, whether or not practices were enrolling and GP vacancies.

To attract GPs to the district and

ease pressure, a $10,000 incentive is offered to sweeten the deal.

The Voluntary Bonding Scheme (VBS) is designed to entice medical graduates to work in a list of hard-to-staff communities or specialties for three to five years after they graduate.

The creation of zoning has also helped to relieve pressure on practices as has the inclusion of an eighth practice to Mid Canterbury last year, Ashburton Health First.

As for who is enrolling patients currently, both Moore Street and Methven Medical Centre have their books open, however Methven is only enrolling from within its zone.

Gym Company Medical and Tinwald Medical Centre have small waitlists and enroll when gaps arise.

Ashburton Health First and Rakaia Medical Centre chose not to comment and Allenton Medical Centre did not provide a response by deadline.

Rally deemed a success

The Ashburton Vintage Car Club’s 47th annual rally was a success despite overcast weather.

Nearly 60 vehicles turned up to the event which left from the clubrooms on Maronan Road on Saturday morning.

Club captain Neville Ross said everyone enjoyed themselves and only one car broke down, which is good for a group of old cars.

“It was great apart from the weather.”

Nearly 60 vehicles and their drivers, from as far afield as Oamaru and Culverden, had the option of choosing two routes – a 120km touring one and a short 97km course for slower vehicles.

There was even a couple visiting from England who drove a 1954 Morris Minor.

The great thing was seeing more than 30 spectators, including a number of families, come

to see them off from the clubrooms in the morning, Mr Ross said. “It was quite thrilling to see the people there.”

The rally ended with prizegiving and a meal.

Take care around schools Mid Canterbury drivers are being urged to take extra care on the roads this week as schools reopen for 2016.

Community services manager Inspector Paula Holt said drivers need to remember children were highly unpredictable and likely

to be excited to see their friends, so easily distracted.

“We need to do everything we can to safeguard our kids as they walk or cycle to school – some of them for the first time,” Ms Holt said.

“Slow down in and near school

zones, and take care when passing school buses.”

The speed limit is 20km/h when passing school buses dropping off or picking up children, and when driving around schools, there is a permanent 4km/h speed threshold, mean-

ing anything over 4km/h over the speed limit gets a ticket.

“If you are walking your children to school, show them the safest place to cross roads, reminding them to look left and right and look out for cars,” Ms Holt said.

Lushingtons burglary Police are investigating a burglary that occurred at Lushingtons Garden, Gift and Café centre at 1.20am on Sunday. Senior Sergeant Scott Banfield said thanks to the good work of a local security firm four people were located near the scene and two males, one 17 and the other a youth, were arrested and charged with burglary. It appears the offenders climbed over a fencing and made their way through the centre to where sensors alerted the security group.

Food items and other knick-knacks were taken, he said. The youth will be appearing in the Christchurch Youth Court on the next available session on the burglary charge and a number of outstanding matters.

Enquiries into the burglary are continuing due to a number of recent, similar incident, Senior Sergeant Banfield said.

Two-vehicle crash Rakaia Volunteer Fire Brigade attended a two-vehicle collision on the West Town Belt in Rakaia at 2.35pm yesterday. Deputy chief fire officer Tyrone Burrowes said both cars were damaged and one person was injured.

Sixty-four Year 13 Ashburton College students embarked on an intense three-day leadership camp at Living Springs near Lyttelton yesterday.

Year 9 Dean Dave Christensen, who has helped organise the camp for a number of years, said it is for the students who are most likely to undertake leadership roles at the school this year. It is a great way to learn skills, mix with

new people and take charge.

The camp is full-on and the students will complete a range of outdoor, physical activities that require leadership, he said.

“Everything revolves around somebody taking charge.”

The house leaders will also be chosen during the camp.

The group spent a few hours at the school participating in activities including public speaking before their bus trip to Living Springs early yesterday afternoon.

Mangere shooting Police have called for information about a shooting in Mangere which put at least three people in hospital with gunshot wounds.

Detective Senior Sergeant Kevin Tiernan of Counties Manukau Police said about 40 people were drinking in the Yates Rd Reserve just before 4.30am yesterday when a man entered the reserve with a gun and fired three shots at the group.

“A 22-year-old man was taken to Middlemore Hospital with gunshot wounds to his legs and abdomen. He has now been transferred to Auckland Hospital and whilst his injuries are serious, they are not thought to be life-threatening,” he said.

“A 16-year-old male was also taken to Middlemore Hospital, with gunshot wounds to his legs. He remains in Middlemore Hospital with moderate injuries.

Police are making a large number of inquiries and are going door-to-door in the Yates Rd area.

A 10-year-old girl injured in a Northland crash which killed her mother remains in a critical condition at Auckland’s Starship children’s hospital. The girl’s 2-year-old brother, who suffered a fractured skull, is stable in a ward, the spokeswoman said.

Siblings Malia and Bucko are the children of Anne Talijancich, who died when the vehicle they were travelling in crashed into a bridge at Te Kopuru, just before 4pm on Saturday.

House fire A person is “unaccounted for” following a house fire north of Kaikoura on Saturday night. Tasman Police District spokeswoman Barbara Dunn said Marlborough police are investigating the fire at a house on State Highway 1 at Waipapa Bay. The fire was reported about 8.30pm and was fully involved when emergency services arrived, she said. “One occupant from the house is unaccounted for.” A scene guard was in place overnight and police and fire service investigators will begin their investigation today.

Airlifted to hospital A woman was airlifted to hospital after a fall near the Waikato River on Saturday evening. The 45-yearold from Papamoa fell and broke her leg close to the river, near Whakamaru. A helicopter was dispatched due to the remote location and nature of the injury.

She was flown to Rotorua Hospital.

It wasn’t clear how she fell, or how far.

In brief Two teenagers dead Two teenagers have died after a police pursuit in Masterton early yesterday morning. Police attempted to pull over the driver of a stolen Honda Civic at about 2.15am. The vehicle failed to stop and although a pursuit commenced it was abandoned almost immediately due to the dangerous driving of the fleeing driver. A short time later police saw the still speeding vehicle crash into a light-pole on Queen St. Two were seriously injured and have since passed away as a result of their injuries. All are believed to be from Wairarapa and are aged in their mid teens.

A man sought by police following a violent assault of an elderly woman in an east Auckland rest home has been arrested. Rangi Joseph Harris, 45, has been wanted by police investigating the attack on the 75-year-old woman at a Botany rest home on Friday.

A tip-off from the public alerted police to his whereabouts, and he was arrested without incident at a Papatoetoe address shortly before 4pm yesterday. He would be charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, police said, and is due to appear in the Manukau District Court tomorrow.

Power cut to breathing machine The death of a Taupo woman is being investigated by police, after they were told she died because a power cut switched off her breathing machine.

Police were called to a Rifle Range Rd property at 8am on Saturday, after Fai Deane was found unconscious and unresponsive, the Sunday Star-Times reported.

The 50-year-old could not be revived.

spokesman Stephen Matthews said yesterday the person calling for help indicated a power cut may have been responsible for Ms Deane’s death.

“It’s been reported to us in that way, that a power cut has caused her oxygen machine to fail. Police are investigating.”

A forensic examination of the property took place on Saturday, Mr Matthews said.

In 2007, Mangere woman Folole Muliaga died the same day a contractor to Mercury Energy cut the power to her home.

A coroner later found the 45-year-old, who was using an oxygen machine, died as a result of morbid obesity, but also that the loss of power played a part in her death.

Mrs Muliaga’s power was cut off because she had not paid her $168.40 bill.

Less than a month later, Mercury Energy introduced changes to prevent a repeat of the tragedy, including requiring customers

facing power disconnection to receive a personal phone call to check whether there are medical or hardship reasons not to cut off the electricity.

The Electricity Commission, now called the Electricity Authority, also introduced voluntary guidelines - involving electricity retailers, hospitals and GPs - to identify and help protect vulnerable people from electricity disconnection.

Building ahead of schedule

Mt Somers Springburn School’s new building project will be finished well ahead of schedule.

The building, which is a multipurpose room with a kitchen, was expected to be completed in March.

However, principal Brent Gray said because it had been going so smoothly he had hoped they would be able to use it this term.

While the building is actually finished they will not be able to use it until their new toilet block is completed, which will be in about

two weeks, because both projects are tied to the same building consent and have been constructed by the same builders.

They also need to complete coding and compliance, he said.

Once opened it will be used for assembly and for some art and technology classes. The community will also have the opportunity to use it if needed.

The school will make use of it for the first time with an informal assembly and will have an official opening later in the term.

Building work began in August last year.

Silent retreat to focus thoughts

Mid Canterbury residents were able to immerse themselves in thought during two Buddhist retreats held in Staveley in January.

Last week, Zen held a week-long silent mediation retreat at the Staveley campsite and a weekend Buddhist retreat was held on the weekend of January 23 and 24.

The retreats were led by Hogen Green, a trainer at the Mountain and Rivers Order of Zen Buddhism in the US, who visits New Zealand annually holding a week of Zen teaching in Christchurch and about 10 days in Staveley.

He is also an assistant teacher at the Zen Center of New York City.

One of the organisers, Geoff Moore, said Mr Green did a great job at getting participants focused on their own thoughts.

He has held retreats in Staveley for the past three years and plans to continue coming back, Mr Moore said. Twenty people attended the weekend retreat and 28 participated in the week-long silent retreat. Both workshops were important because they allowed those involved time out of their busy lives to focus on their minds and in the end they came out happier and with a new energy, he said.

“During the period of meditation, whatever we think about, we see that, let that thought go, and come back to what’s arising in the present.

“Over time, our ability to maintain our awareness develops and with that comes a sense of grounded-ness and authenticity to how we live.”

Staveley was the perfect location because of its quiet, rural setting near the mountains and a beech forest.

Twenty-eight people attended a week-long Zen silent retreat in Staveley last week.

Time for school uniforms to go?

chool uniforms might take a hefty slice out of a family budget, but what’s the option?

Uniforms were introduced to create a look, style or statement for a particular school, as a way of ensuring it had its own identity and character.

They served the double purpose, however, also taking the fashion factor out of the school yard. Nothing divides kids into haves and have-nots more clearly than the clothes they wear.

As five-year-olds that might not be noticeable but older kids know what’s in, what’s not and they know a designer label from a mass-produced cheapie.

But has the school uniform gone too far?

It’s a captive market for manufacturers. Once the uniform code is set and the clothing items ordered, there’s usually not a lot of choice when it comes to where to buy and what to pay.

As a parent you’re stuck with buying what’s on offer where it’s offered.

Yes, there are second-hand uniform shops but there are never enough garments to meet demand.

Now, some school principals are suggesting that uniforms should be scrapped. That kids should simply wear to school whatever they have at home.

Fine in theory, but immediately when uniforms go other issues arise.

Who then decides what is and what is not appropriate school wear? What may seem fine to one parent would be deemed entirely inappropriate by another.

We all have different standards, different tastes – and different bank balances when it comes to clothing our children.

For the kids from homes where money is scarce, at least with a uniform, bought from a second-hand shop, through a school grant or from a retailer, there should be a good chance children are wearing warm and appropriate clothing.

Without a uniform those same children could be turning up at school in thin, summer clothing mid-winter, if their parents have other financial priorities.

Surely it’s more important that children have every opportunity and as few impediments as possible to learning.

If they’re warmly and appropriately clothed, that’s one hurdle out of the way.

here has been quite a bit of comment in the media recently about student loan debt, especially debt owed by students now living and working overseas.

I believe some perspective on student loans, student loan debt, collecting loan debt and the benefits to New Zealand of having a student loan scheme may be helpful.

New Zealand has one of the most generous student support systems in the world. The Government spends 48 per cent of the budget for tertiary education on financial aid to students, while the OECD average is just 22 per cent.

In addition, New Zealand is the only country in the OECD that doesn’t charge interest on loans after graduation.

New Zealand also provides tuition subsidies to all students, which cover on average, 71 per cent of the cost of tuition. About 40 per cent of the cost of each

interest-free student loan is written-off.

However, for students, the temporary cost of having a student loan is far outweighed by the ongoing benefits.

We know that the median earnings of young people who complete a bachelor’s degree are 46 per cent above the national median earnings five years after finishing study.

Around 60 per cent of student loans are for $20,000 or less.

Students who remain in New Zealand after study are projected to pay off their student loans on average less than six years after they complete their study.

Loans are repaid on annual

incomes of more than $19,084 at a rate of 12 cents in the dollar for borrowers in New Zealand.

Currently, there are 725,000 student loan borrowers. Fifteen per cent, just over 100,000, of these borrowers live overseas, the majority in Australia.

It is estimated these overseas borrowers owe $3.2 billion. Loan balances owed by overseas borrowers are not interest free.

Borrowers living overseas for six months or more are required to make repayments based on their loan balance at the end of September and March each year.

For example, a borrower owing $50,000 must make two repayments of $2000 each. Under certain circumstances a loan repayment holiday is available for up to a year.

In 2010 the Government began a compliance initiative. Since then, approximately $227 million in additional repayments have been made.

more calls to IRD from overseas borrowers, a 24 per cent increase in repayments from overseas in the financial year to 30 September and an increase in payments towards future repayment obligations.

For those who choose not to repay, there are consequences.

It is an offence for overseas borrowers in default on loan repayments to knowingly fail or refuse to make a reasonable effort to pay or make arrangements to pay.

One person was approached at the border by customs about their loan and paid back over $100,000 in one payment.

This shows there are people who can pay back what they owe New Zealand taxpayers – they just don’t want to.

There are too many borrowers who have spent a long time overseas, particularly in Australia, who refuse to meet their obligations and are being unfair to New Zealand taxpayers.

UK right clashes with left British police have arrested nine people after clashes between anti-immigration groups and anti-racism protesters in Dover, with media reports of smoke bombs and bricks being thrown.

Far-right groups such as the National Front confronted activists rallying against racism, such as the Kent Anti-Fascist Network, resulting in disturbances in the port town.

Kent Police said one person suffered a broken arm and five people sustained minor injuries during the demonstrations, as BBC television footage showed dozens of hooded protesters pushing through police lines.

Britain’s government is trying to curb rising levels of immigration from both EU migrants and arrivals from elsewhere in the world, over fears about the strain on public services.

Dover is symbolic as the entry point for many new arrivals.

It is a short ferry or train journey from Calais in France, where thousands of refugees fleeing war and poverty in Africa and the Middle East have gathered over the past year, using it as a stopover point before trying to enter Britain.

Kent Police said three arrests were made in Dover itself and six at a nearby motorway service station.

David Bowie (right) wanted his ashes to be scattered in a Buddhist ritual in Bali, according to his will. The Starman singer’s death certificate stated he was cremated on January 12, two days after his death from cancer at 69. The documents were filed under his legal name David Robert Jones in a New York court, US media said.

His estate, said to be worth around $US100 million ($NZ154.3m), will be divided mainly between his wife Iman, son Duncan and daughter Alexandria Zahra Jones. He left Iman 50 per cent of his estate, including the home they shared in New York’s SoHo district, while both children received 25 per cent each. His personal assistant Corinne Schwab was left $US2 million ($NZ3.1m) and his daughter’s nanny Marion Skene received $US1 million ($NZ1.54m).

Virus hits 2100 pregnant women More storms after flood death A man has been killed and several others rescued in floodwaters after severe storms dumped heavy rain over parts of Queensland.

Police say two men, who are related, had been returning home after visiting family when their SUV was swept away as they attempted to cross a flooded causeway at St Kilda, inland from Bundaberg, early yesterday.

The 64-year-old driver managed to escape, swim to an embankment and run home to raise the alarm.

However, his 68-year-old passenger couldn’t be reached in time and swift water rescue crews found his body inside the vehicle 150 metres downstream from Delaneys Road about 2.30am.

“It’s quite tragic ... the deceased warned the driver and yelled to get out of the car,” a police spokesman said.

“They were in the middle of nowhere so the driver has become disorientated when he tried to get home to raise the alarm.”

A Queensland Fire and Emergency Services spokeswoman said four people and two horses had to be rescued after a vehicle carrying a horse float became stuck at Apple Tree Creek, near St Kilda, about 2.45am.

About half an hour later a person was rescued from a tree at nearby Wallaville.

None of the people or animals was hurt in either incident.

Ashes to ashes in Bali

More than 2100 pregnant Colombian women are infected with the mosquito-borne Zika virus.

Colombia’s national health institute announced the statistic at the weekend, as the disease continues its spread across the Americas.

The virus has been linked to the devastating birth defect microcephaly, which prevents foetus’ brains from developing properly. There is no vaccine.

There are 20,297 confirmed cases of the disease in Colombia, the national health institute said in a epidemiology bulletin, among them 2116 pregnant women.

There are so far no reported cases of microcephaly or deaths from the virus in Colombia.

Zika cases have been confirmed in 23 countries and territories in the Americas and scientists are racing to develop a vaccine for

the virus. The health ministry has said Zika infection falls within the health requirements women must meet to get abortions in the country, which restricts the procedure unless patients are victims of rape, have significant medical problems or the foetus is fatally deformed.

Many women, especially those living far from large cities, struggle to find abortion providers even when they meet the legal requirements and illegal abortions are widespread.

The government has urged women to delay pregnancy for six to eight months to avoid potential infection. Officials expect up to 700,000 cases.

Brazil is the country hit hardest by the disease.

It has reported around 3700 cases of microcephaly strongly suspected to be related to Zika.

Collins reunites with ex-wife Phil Collins has reunited with his wife just eight years after paying her a reported £25 million ($NZ55 million) in their divorce settlement. The hitmaker split with his third wife, Orianne Cevey, in 2006 saying they had “grown apart” and the mega payout two years later was the second Collins had been forced to stump up to an ex-wife. But the two are an item again against all odds, as Collins revealed he had bought a house in Miami where Cevey and their two children live. He told Billboard magazine: “I’m actually back with my third wife - I haven’t really talked about it. We’ve been together for a while, and nobody’s noticed.”

Refugees ‘will go home’ German Chancellor Angela Merkel has tried to placate the increasingly vocal critics of her open-door policy for refugees, insisting that asylum seekers from Syria and Iraq will go home once the conflicts there end.

Merkel, despite appearing increasingly isolated over her policy, has resisted pressure from some conservatives to cap the influx of refugees, or to close Germany’s borders. A record 1.1 million migrants arrived in Germany last year.

But growing concern about the country’s ability to cope and worries about crime and security after assaults on women are weighing on support for Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party and its Bavarian sister party, the Christian Social Union (CSU).

Merkel said that despite efforts to integrate refugees and help them, it was important to stress that they had only been given permission to stay for a limited period of time.

“We need ... to say to people that this is a temporary residential status and we expect that once there is peace in Syria again, once

IS has been defeated in Iraq, that you go back to your home country with the knowledge that you have gained,” she said at a meeting of CDU members in the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

She said 70 per cent of refugees that fled to Germany from the war in the former Yugoslavia in the 1990s had returned to their home countries.

Her remarks come after Horst Seehofer, leader of the CSU, threatened to take her government to court if his demand to stem the flow of asylum seekers was not met.

Support for the right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD) has edged up into double digits. Its leader said in an interview published on Saturday that border guards should shoot at refugees to prevent them from illegally entering the country if need be.

Merkel has tried to convince other European countries to take in quotas of refugees, pushed for reception centres to be built on Europe’s external borders, and led an EU campaign to try to convince Turkey to keep refugees from entering the bloc. - Reuters

250g penne pasta 2T olive oil 1 onion, chopped 2 cloves garlic, crushed 1t Italian herbs or oregano 1/2 C dry white wine 1 425g can crushed tomatoes 2T tomato paste 1C chicken stock 1 Tegel hot cooked chicken, shredded, skin discarded 1/4 C chopped Italian parsley 1/2 C finely grated parmesan ■ Preheat the oven to 180°C. ■ Cook the pasta following the packet directions. Drain and set aside.

■ Heat the oil in a frying pan. Add the onion and garlic and cook over medium heat for 3 to 4 minutes or until golden.

■ Add the Italian herbs or oregano and wine and simmer for 2 minutes.

■ Add the tomatoes, tomato paste

and chicken stock. Simmer for a further 5 minutes.

■ Add the pasta, shredded chicken and parsley to the pan and mix well.

■ Place the mixture into an 8 cup capacity baking dish. Top with

the parmesan.

■ Bake for 20 minutes or until it is golden brown and heated through.

Step into world of Chinatown T

he best plan for tackling San Francisco’s Chinatown is no plan at all.

Simply wandering the wide streets and narrow alleys will take you where you need to go.

Whether you just happen to be in town or are visiting for something specific like the Super Bowl or Lunar New Year – the Year of the Monkey dawns February 8 – spending a few hours in the second-largest Chinatown in the United States (behind New York City) is always worthwhile.

Visit early and you’ll feel the rush of everyday life as the food markets and bakeries hum with activity – this is a real community as well as a tourist attraction.

Visit at dusk and Chinatown takes on a magical glow, the lanterns strung across Grant Street glowing red and the curio shop windows ablaze in a glitter of possibilities.

Here’s a quick guide to getting the most out of your stroll.

How to get there A good place to start is the much-photographed gate at Bush Street and Grant Avenue.

This is Instagram central and a short walk from Union Square.

You can also ride the cable car to Chinatown via either the Powell-Hyde or Powell-Mason lines.

Cable cars make many stops; two possibilities for alighting are at Washington and Mason streets or Powell and California.

Tickets, $7, can be purchased at the turnaround at Powell and Market streets or in advance online.

You don’t have to queue at the turnaround to board; you can walk a few blocks up the line – look for the brown and white signs indicating stops.

Be aware, though, that you may have trouble getting a seat

when it’s busy.

Where to eat Tourists and locals alike rejoiced when Sam Wo’s recently reopened. Before it closed in 2012, the restaurant had operated for more than 100 years on Washington Street and was known as a place for no-frills Cantonese fare where customers were once insulted by the “rudest waiter in the world,” the late Edsel Ford Fong.

Sam Wo’s reopened in October at 713 Clay Street, between Grant and Kearny.

Try the “jook,” rice porridge served with a variety of toppings.

Other standbys include House of Nanking, 919 Kearny Street, and Great Eastern Restaurant, 649 Jackson Street, known for its Cantonese-style seafood dishes.

What to do Grant is the main drag, but if you want to see the more workaday side to Chinatown, take a walk on Stockton Street, known for its produce and live animal markets.

Explore the tiny side streets where you’ll find everything from dive bars to tea houses to traditional Chinese apothecaries.

Waverly Place, between Washington and Sacramento streets, is home to several temples including Tien Hau, which has a different style on each floor culminating with a temple dedicated to the Goddess of Heaven, 125 Waverly Place, free but donations appreciated.

Another interesting temple is Kong Chow Temple, known for its colourful altars, and in the same building as the Chinatown post office, 955 Stockton Street.

The Golden Gate Fortune Cookie Factory, is open seven days a week, 56 Ross Alley.

Admission is free, but you need to pay 50 cents to take a picture.

Chinese New Year, understandably, is big here, with banners, fireworks, food and flowers.

This year, the two-week celebration wraps up with the traditional parade on February 20.

This year’s flower fair will be held January 30-31, from 10am to 8pm on Saturday and 9am to 6pm Sunday.

Location: Grant Avenue from Clay to Broadway, and Pacific, Jackson and Washington streets between Stockton and Kearny.

In brief Tennis a washout The return of open grade senior tennis will have to wait another week after the Ashburton Trust Tennis Centre courts were deemed too wet for play on Saturday.

Hampstead were scheduled to take on Allenton, while Southern met Methven and Fairton faced Tinwald before the day’s fixtures were called off. Whether the matches will be replayed at a later date will depend on the results of the next three weekends, but could serve as a playoff at the end of the round.

Intent proving the doubters wrong, Roger Federer is convinced more grand slam glory awaits despite his frustrating title drought continuing at Melbourne Park. Federer has now gone 14 majors and 3 years since landing his record 17th singles slam at Wimbledon in 2012.

Kerber savours stunning win

By Darren Walton Angelique Kerber is relishing her “crazy” ride to Australian Open glory after gatecrashing Serena Williams’ party to become the first German grand slam champion since the great Steffi Graf.

Kerber stunned the sporting world with a dramatic and fearless 6-4 3-6 6-4 triumph over the all-conquering world No.1 in a thrilling championship climax on Saturday night.

The three-set boilover was not only Williams’ first defeat in seven title matches at Melbourne Park, but also denied the American a place alongside Graf as the most successful women’s player in almost half a century of professional tennis.

Kerber is only the fourth player to conquer Williams in a grand slam final, joining the American’s older sister Venus, Russian Maria Sharapova and Australia’s 2011 US Open champion Samantha Stosur.

The 28-year-old is also just the second woman in the open era

to secure the title after saving match point in the first round.

“I had really crazy two weeks,” Kerber said.

“I had one leg on the plane to Germany and now I’m here. I get the second chance and I take my chance.

“To win it, it’s my dream come true. My whole life, I’ve been working really hard and I can say I’m a grand slam champion.

“It’s crazy.

“The best two weeks of my life, of my career, was here.

“I had goosebumps on the centre court when I was playing.”

As Kerber celebrated her magical breakthrough, Williams was left to lament another opportunity lost after succumbing to suffocating pressure for the second straight slam.

A shock US Open semi-final loser to Roberta Vinci with a calendar-year grand slam within sight in New York, Williams again stumbled trying to match Graf’s open-era record 22 singles majors.

Williams did her best to com-

mit tennis suicide, making a staggering 46 unforced errors as Kerber dominated, producing some awesome power and precision.

Mixing incredible forehand passes with deft backhand dropshot winners, Kerber soared to the biggest win of her career in two hours and eight tensionfilled minutes at Rod Laver Arena.

A first-round loser last year, Kerber again stood on the brink of defeat in her tournament opener against Misaki Doi, but didn’t look back, also taking out two-time champion and former world No.1 Victoria Azarenka en route to glory.

Apart from ending Germany’s 17-year major title drought since Graf’s 1999 Wimbledon triumph, Kerber will climb to a career-high No.2 in the rankings today and also bank a cheque for $3.85 million.

“Really, it’s a special moment for me,” Kerber said.

“I knew before that I beat her once in Cincinnati, that I really

must go out there to try to beat her again because she will not give it to me.

“It was a really great match.”

Kerber appeared to have missed her moment when Williams locked the final at a set apiece.

Ominously, the world No.1 was eight from eight in deciding sets of grand slam finals.

Undeterred, the underdog retained her cool to break Williams to love and surge to a 2-0 lead with a flurry of explosive forehand winners.

The top seed fought back to 2-2 before Kerber reeled off three straight games to have the American on the brink.

Kerber faltered trying to serve out the match at 5-4, but finally prevailed as Williams dropped serve for a fifth time trying to stay in the contest.

“My phone is just exploding right now,” the elated champion said.

“I don’t know how many messages I get.

“It’s like amazing.”

Tourney has doubters Former Wimbledon winner and Davis Cup champion Pat Cash says the newly proposed tennis teams event named after all-time great Rod Laver could struggle for credibility. The exhibition tournament is to be played over a September weekend in non-Olympic years but Cash doubts whether the world’s best players will sign up. He also suggests the tournament that would be left off would be the Davis Cup. “I like the concept but I don’t know if players will take it seriously,” Cash said. “It’s stuck in the middle of a tournament. With the Davis Cup struggling in some places in the world, I’m not sure we need another tournament to squeeze in.”

Shock loss for Mahe

Any hopes of a challenge may have been off the table, but Mid Canterbury ended their Hawke Cup campaign on a high with a first innings victory over Otago Country at Molyneux Park in Alexandra yesterday.

In the absence of injured captain Bevan Ravenscroft, standin-skipper Matt Winter won the toss and elected bat.

Openers James Southby and Callum Gallagher got the innings off to a forgettable start, posting 1 and 3 respectively before being removed by Tom Myles.

Will Southby (34) pushed on, but Des Kruger (8) became Myles’ third victim of the day.

With things looking bleak, Matt Tait steadied the ship with 153 off 160 delivers in an excellent display with the bat.

Captain Winter then walked for nought, but Ryan Cockburn (103 not out) was in a run-scoring mood with a ton of his own, while Hayden Sinclair (21) and Harry Jones (19) also made fine contributions before Mid Canterbury declared in the 82nd over on 365 for seven.

In reply, Otago Country were all out for 192 in the 68.3 overs as Mark Knox top-scored with an elegant 44.

Trailing by 173, Mid Canterbury sent Country back in to bat.

The home side were in a defiant mood in their second innings as openers Henry Burns and Sam Pringle, who was on debut, posted 18 and 29 respectively.

Pakistan rues dodgy umpire’s call

New Zealand wrapped up their ODI series against Pakistan at Eden Park yesterday, but it was a close thing.

When the rain, which had been threatening for some time, arrived New Zealand had just lost their fifth wicket, and needed 81 off 87 balls against opponents with their tails up.

The rain recalibration helped New Zealand significantly, the target trimmed to 53 off 45 balls.

And it seemed they’d walk it as Pakistan dropped Luke Ronchi in the deep, had another top edge from the same player fall between three closing catchers,

and watched Corey Anderson get the benefit on a catch at the wicket when Snicko indicated a fat edge.

In the end, six were needed off the last over by Wahab Riaz and it took two boundaries by Mitchell Santner to nail victory by three wickets, with two balls to spare.

Anderson’s role was important.

He struck 35 off 29 balls to push New Zealand to the brink; Ronchi, badly out of touch, hit 20 in 21 balls, but both fell late on, leaving Santner in the chair, and he responded impressively.

The Duckworth Lewis system is not perfect, but regarded as the best of the range tried down the years to solve rain-affected games.

It worked New Zealand’s way yesterday, those are the breaks, and they have now won 18 of their last 20 ODIs at home.

A crowd of just 9165 turned up, many perhaps keeping their money in their wallets for Wednesday’s blockbuster against Australia at the same ground.

Brendon McCullum’s anticipated return lasted just one delivery, hooking Mohammad Amir to long leg, but Martin Guptill and Kane Williamson are in prime touch.

Their 159-run stand is a New Zealand ODI record for the second wicket against all countries.

A stat to savour: it was their fifth ODI century stand and New Zealand are unbeaten in those

As in Pakistan’s innings earlier, both batsmen were staring at centuries and the prospect of steering New Zealand to what would have been a comfortable win.

Then they were gone in eight Azhar Ali legspinners.

The Pakistan captain served up some real dross, but in between persuaded Guptill to slice a drive to point, then had Williamson stumped with a beauty.

At one point New Zealand managed only 17 singles and a two in six overs, and lost Henry Nicholls and Grant Elliott too before the rain delay, which changed the whole complexion of the match.

The Cambridge Town Cup rowing regatta at Lake Karapiro has thrown up two early season shocks.

National quadruple sculler John Storey has defeated Olympic champion Mahe Drysdale in the men’s single scull, while Rebecca Scown and Genevieve Behrent have set an unofficial world’s best time in the women’s pair.

Rowing does not have world records because of the irregular nature of current flow in the rivers and lakes hosting regattas, like Karapiro.

Storey took advantage of tailwind conditions to pip Drysdale by 1.65s.

The 28-year-old time of six minutes 35.57 seconds was 2.22s outside Drysdale’s world best, set at Poznan in 2009.

Storey has been around the Rowing New Zealand elite scene since 2010.

His best international result came in the quadruple sculls at the London Olympics when the crew finished seventh.

At last year’s world championships in France, his crew missed qualifying for the Rio Games by one spot - they finished ninth but get a last opportunity to secure two remaining spots at the regatta of death in Lucerne during May. The result further complicates a difficult summer for Drysdale after the well-documented spat between his coach Dick Tonks and Rowing New Zealand.

The relationship breakdown potentially left him coachless for the Olympics.

It has since been resolved, with Tonks continuing on as his mentor.

Scown and Behrent recorded a time of six minutes 49.06 seconds to defeat world championship silver medallists Kerri Gowler and Grace Prendergast.

Their effort beat the previous world best of Olympic champion Brits Heather Stanning and Helen Glover by 1.55s.

It requires ratification from international governing body Fisa’s records team - when they wake up in Lausanne.

In brief Phoenix imploding It’s almost reaching crisis time at the Wellington Phoenix. The goals have dried up and their winless streak now stretches to eight matches, after a horrible 3-1 defeat to the Central Coast Mariners in Christchurch. Saturday night’s match swung on a three minute spell early in the second half, when a Glen Moss error and a moment of Luis Garcia magic saw the Phoenix net broached twice. There is no way to sugar coat the recent form of the Phoenix. Remember they lost to Newcastle two weeks ago, when the Australian side were on the verge of setting an A League record for a scoring drought, while Saturday night’s defeat was particularly galling.

City still on target Manchester City remained in the hunt for a record trophy quadruple after a hat-trick from teenager Kelechi Iheanacho helped them demolish Aston Villa 4-0 in the FA Cup yesterday.

Fringe players such as Iheanacho got their chance in fourthround games throughout the day, which also saw wins for cup holder Arsenal and Tottenham, while Liverpool was held by West Ham to 0-0 in the late kickoff.

But City’s convincing victory showed the real strength in depth of Manuel Pellegrini’s squad, with 19-year-old Iheanacho taking over the goalscoring duties from Sergio Aguero, who watched from the bench.

The bookmakers already make City the favourite to win the English Premier League, where it lies second behind surprise leader Leicester City, and also to beat Liverpool in the League Cup final at Wembley Stadium on February 28.

That leaves the Champions League, where City has a place in the last 16, and the FA Cup. Iheanacho opened the scoring, and the 19-year-old striker converted a penalty 20 minutes later after Raheem Sterling was brought down in the area.

Iheanacho struck again in the second half after a 30-yard (metre) run, and Sterling added City’s fourth just two minutes after that.

Asked about Iheanacho’s performance, Pellegrini said: “That’s why we didn’t replace (Stevan)

Jovetic and Edin Dzeko - because I see him working every day and I know how important he can be.”

The City coach also revealed he sent orders from the touchline for Iheanacho to take City’s spot kick.

“It’s unbelievable the way he takes penalties and I’ve seen him do it every day,” Pellegrini said.

“That’s why he was the right option.”

Down in north London, Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez scored one goal and made the other in a 2-1 home victory over second-tier side Burnley.

Sanchez set up defender Calum Chambers to give Arsenal the lead, only for Sam Vokes to head an equaliser for Burnley on the half-hour mark.

Sanchez struck the winner after the break, turning home Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s cross from close range.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger was quick to play down his side’s chances of a third consecutive FA Cup trophy.

“We are still in three competitions and we will try every time to get a team out to pass the round,” he told the club website.

Nacer Chadli scored twice as Tottenham cruised to a 4-1 victory in the early kickoff at Colchester United, after a clash of heads left one of the home side’s defenders in hospital.

Colchester said Alex Wynter suffered a deep cut in his mouth and was slightly disorientated,

but “otherwise doing OK” after colliding with team-mate Tom Eastman in the opening minutes.

Colchester, which is at the bottom of England’s third tier, then managed to keep the Premier League title contender at bay until midway through the second half - when Eric Dier scored with a deflected shot.

Chadli added his second with a header, but Colchester pulled a goal back when Gavin Massey’s shot rebounded off the post and defender Ben Davies turned the ball into his own net.

Tom Carroll came up with Spurs’ fourth goal.

“The job’s done, we’re in the next round,” Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino said.

The big upset of the day looked to be coming from the south coast, where fourth-tier Portsmouth was leading topflight Bournemouth 1-0 until Josh King’s equalizer in the 71st minute.

Marc Pugh then scored a second for the Premier League side to earn a 2-1 victory.

Elsewhere, West Bromwich Albion was held by third-tier Peterborough to 2-2, while Watford left it late to beat Nottingham Forest 1-0.

Watford’s top scorer, Odion Ighalo, came off the bench to get the only goal in the 89th minute.

A solo effort by Wilfried Zaha gave Crystal Palace a 1-0 win over Stoke in an all-Premier League game.

Melbourne Victory coach Kevin Muscat says he’s puzzled by the circumstances surrounding Fahid Ben Khalfallah’s sending off in Saturday night’s 3-2 A-League loss to Perth Glory. Ben Khalfallah was initially given a yellow card by ref Kris Griffiths-Jones for his faint kick to the leg of Glory defender Shane Lowry. But after consulting his assistant referee, Griffiths-Jones changed his mind and gave Ben Khalfallah a straight red for the offthe-play incident. And although Besart Berisha’s second goal levelled the scores, Perth scored the winner via the penalty spot in the 82nd minute.

Comeback for Pearce Former England captain Stuart Pearce is set to come out of retirement at the age of 53 to help out a minor league side who have conceded 183 goals in 19 games this season. The one-time defender has signed up to play one match for Longford AFC. The club play in Division Two of the Gloucestershire Northern Senior League, equivalent to the 13th tier of English soccer. “That’s the one thing that has been missing for Madam Victoria recently,” trainer Terri Rae said.

The daughter of High Chaparral showed her appreciation of the dead surface when she finished powerfully to add Sat-

urday’s Listed Speight’s Timaru Stakes to her record.

Madam Victoria has now won eight of her 18 starts with six of them on rain-affected going, including Listed successes in the NZB Air Freight Stakes and the Warstep Stakes during her threeyear-old season.

Matamata trainer Danica Guy gained some consolation for the disappointment of a wasted trip to Trentham on Saturday when her class sprinting mare In Style bounced back to winning form on her home track. Guy had headed south with the warm favourite for Saturday’s Gr. 3 Desert Gold Stakes in Capella however a minor hoof issue surfaced when the filly was unloaded at Otaki the previous day and saw her ruled out of the contest. That left Guy with just the one runner who provided a pleasant end to a frustrating day when she saw off a tidy line-up in the open 1200 metre event. - NZME

Storm hits Rosehill A sudden storm dumped 30mm of rain on Rosehill Racecourse in 20 minutes, forcing the last two races to be called off. Thunder and lightning preceded the rain which came just after the running of the Group Two Expressway Stakes, the feature race on Saturday. “There are sections of the track near the home turn and the winning post which are unsafe,” chief steward Ray Murrihy said. Taking on big guns Brisbane trainer Kelly Schweida is chasing Group One winning jockey Tom Berry to ride Miss Cover Girl in the Breeders’ Classic at Randwick.

Miss Cover Girl will make her third trip to Sydney to take on some of Sydney’s best fillies and mares in Saturday’s Group Two Breeders’ Classic (1200m) won for the past two years by Catkins. The winner of the Group Three P J Bell Stakes in April last year on a heavy track, Miss Cover Girl was third in a blanket finish to the Group Three Nivison Stakes in October. Miss Cover Girl has been racing well in Queensland without winning this campaign but Schweida has no qualms about taking on Sydney class.

Bennett coaching England?

Wayne Bennett will replace Steve McNamara as the England rugby league team coach, according to a report in the UK. Sky Sports says the Brisbane NRL coach will be announced as England boss in the coming days, taking over from Sydney Roosters assistant McNamara who has been at the helm since 2010.

Bennett’s Broncos take on English side Wigan in the World Club Series on February 20.

After losing out to Mal Meninga for the Kangaroos gig in December, former Australia mentor Bennett said he would consider being a head coach of a rival nation.

The 66-year-old weaved his magic with New Zealand in 2008 as an assistant to Stephen Kearney, helping the Kiwis to a World Cup victory.

Dual international and former Newcastle NRL and Great Britain winger Brian Carney had mixed feelings on the expected appointment of Bennett.

“On the one hand you have arguably the greatest coach in the history of the game, a man committed to the international game, lending his expertise, experiences and aura to the English national team which will inspire every single player that plays for him.

“I would have considered it a career highlight to have been coached by Wayne,” Carney told Sky. “That should see the England team’s performances lift to the levels needed to

win the Four Nations tournament.

“On the other hand I feel that Brian McDermott or Shaun Wane may have also been able to lift the English team up a notch too.”

Pearce’s departure to seek help comes after revelations the NRL is investigating a se-

ries of text messages between alleged fellow partygoers that appear to make reference to drug use on the night in question.

Foran and Pearce were

schoolmates at Marist North Shore and St Ives North Primary School and played Australian schoolboys together before breaking into the NRL. Foran described Pearce as likeable, friendly and diligent and the person portrayed in the now infamous video was far removed from his real personality.

“He’s a great bloke.

“He’s a respectful bloke, I just can’t speak highly enough of the guy,” Foran said.

“He comes from a great family, he’s dedicated, loves his footy.

“I’m sure the Roosters boys will tell you he’s one of their hardest trainers, he’s just a quality all-round guy.

“There’s some hiccups there when he’s on the booze and he’s admitted that.”

Don’t axe Pearce, pleads Foran Parramatta star Kieran Foran hopes his best mate Mitchell Pearce isn’t lost to the NRL in the wake of the Australia Day scandal.

Pearce has left Australia to seek treatment for alcohol problems as the Sydney Roosters weigh up his punishment after his drunken antics where captured on video.

Eels five-eighth Foran said he was supporting Pearce after he admitted his problems and hopes it doesn’t spell the end of his rugby league career.

“Footy is the one thing he needs in his life at the moment,” Foran said.

“It’s the one thing that keeps them on the straight and narrow and he’s really passionate about it.

Top starts for Coldstream, Allenton

The opening week of the Muirhead Rosebowl competition saw Coldstream post an eight-wicket win over Lauriston and Allenton down Methven by six wickets, while newly crowned Pritchard Shield winners Tech had the bye.

After finishing in fourth place on the Pritchard Shield ladder, Coldstream produced a performance to ignite their faltering 2015-16

campaign with a convincing win over Lauriston.

Lauriston skipper Jeremy Duckmanton won the toss and elected to bat as the clouds threatened to open throughout the afternoon.

Lauriston were all out for 160 in the 38th over with Scott Morgan (45) top scoring, while Duckmanton posted 37.

Mid Canterbury’s loss was Coldstream’s gain as representative stalwart Richard Print played the

role of the chief destroyer for the away side.

Print added another five-wicket bag to his growing collection, with five for 35 off nine overs.

In reply, Coldstream chased down Lauriston’s total in the 42nd over with eight wickets intact.

Mike Gilbert took two for 28 off his nine overs as Lauriston’s best with the ball, but Coldstream comfortably surpassed the target.

In the round’s opposite fixture,

Allenton got off to a winning start at Methven Domain.

Methven won the toss and sent the visitors in to the field.

The home team batted out their allotted 45 overs, recording 167 for eight with Chris Woods (46) and Andrew Cameron (42) in fine form with the bat.

Jeff Naish (two for 20 off two overs) was Allenton’s most economical bowler in his 151st club outing.

Allenton chased down the target in 28.5 overs at a loss of four wickets as Naish rounded off a fine day’s work to top-score with 77, while Jordan Bird (27) was his side’s second best with the bat.

Tech will return to action next Saturday as they look to put points on the board against Methven, while Allenton will be intent on continuing their fine run of form against Coldstream and Lauriston have the bye.

The Ashburton Rowing Club contingent performed well at the Meridian South Island Rowing Championships at Lake Ruataniwha on Saturday.

Veronica Wall’s fine form continued with a gold medal in the

women’s club single sculls A-final after qualifying first in her heat.

The 16-year-old recorded a time of 8.18.05 in the final to see off Cure Boating Club’s Rose McEwan in second and Nelson’s Tessa Smith in third.

Wilson, Fran Connelly-Whyte and Charlotte Cox took out a bronze medal narrowly behind the Avon Rowing Club team in second spot and winners Otago University.

Ashburton’s girls’ under-15 coxed quad scullers were also among the medals.

Lara Biggs, Katie Dolan, Mollie Gibson, Emma Stagg and Emma Jansen (coxswain) dug deep for a silver in a determined effort.

Not to be outdone, Matthew Rae, Riley Bruce, Corey Lewis and Harrison Davies placed second in their men’s club coxless quad sculls A final.

Teresa Eden, Andrea Witty, Rose Kellet, Kim Hamill and Jansen (coxswain) added to the Saturday medal haul with a bronze in the women’s masters coxed quad sculls (1000m).
