Security guards are likely to remain in place at Ashburton’s new Work and Income New Zealand (Winz) office when it opens next year.

A new high-security facility is under construction on Tancred Street, as part of the $40 million Eastfield precinct development.

Ministry of Social Development general manager property Vaughan Crouch said the building was progressing well,

with practical completion on track for March 31.

“The building opening is yet to be confirmed, but is planned to follow not long after this date,” Crouch added.

The cost of the project was confidential due to this being “commercially sensitive”.

The building would include elements of a security design which had been tested at two trial sites in Wellington and Levin. Crouch provided no further detail of the design in his emailed response to

the Guardian, except to say it would not include bullet-proof glass.

He said Winz was currently operating access and security monitoring through use of security guards in its front-facing sites.

“It is likely that this will remain in place in the Ashburton site when it opens,” he said.

Hampstead Kapa Haka entertains community groups

The Hampstead School Kapa Haka group had a busy day yesterday, performing to various pre-schools, a hospital and a resthome.

About 25 students hopped on a bus yesterday morning and started their tour at Child’s Play before moving onto the Baptist Early Learning Centre.

From there the group visited the Ashburton Hospital, Rosebank Rest Home and Hospital, Jigsaw Preschool Ashburton and the Hampstead Kindergarten.

After singing and dancing their hearts out, the students returned to the school for one last show.

The students want to give something back to the community and displaying their kapa haka performance is one way to do it.

Hampstead School principal Peter Melrose said it was a little busy for the students but they gave their best at all the events.

The students have practised their performance throughout the year so it was a good opportunity to show more people.

“We just thought they’ve worked so hard on their performance this year.

“It was a chance to give something back to the community.”

NZEI claim disputed locally

Claims from the New Zealand Educational Institute (NZEI) that the results from a recent international maths and science survey indicate the Government’s National Standards programme has failed is a “stretch”, the Mid Canterbury Principals’ Association president says.

NZEI Te Riu Roa president Louise Green said, in a press release, the latest results from the 2015 Trends in Mathematics and Sci-

ence Study (TIMSS), which show New Zealand children in Year 5 and 9 near the bottom of international rankings compared to other developed nations, confirms the National Standards programme has failed.

It is the second time since the standards were introduced in 2010 that New Zealand children have been ranked low.

Green said this should serve as a warning to the Government that National Standards are not the answer to lifting students’

achievement, rather well-resourced schools and supported teachers are.

“Kiwi parents will be concerned to learn that National Standards have failed to do the job the Government set them up to do – make children score better in maths.”

She said one of the biggest problems highlighted by the study is the imbalance between the results of Maori and Pasifika students compared to other students which National Standards

have done nothing to address.

“New Zealand will never perform well in these international rankings if the needs of Maori, Pasifika and children from low income families are not met.”

However, Mid Canterbury Principals’ Association president Hilary Boyce said the test conducted by TIMSS is quite narrow and only refers to science.

She said it was hard to measure whether National Standards affected the TIMSS results because there is no national standard at

this stage for science.

“National Standards are a target to aim for and nationally, we should be wanting as many children as possible, doing as well as possible.

“National Standards are not a test or single assessment. To say that they are to blame for a lack of achievement is a stretch.

“NZEI seem intent on being critical of everything the Government does when in fact there are many areas of success in our schools to celebrate.”

Ratepayers asked to help fund project

Ashburton District ratepayers could be asked to help fund a major environmental project that is helping improve water quality and quantity.

The groundwater replenishing project at Lagmhor, also known as Managed Aquifer Recharge or MAR, needs about $750,000 to complete a five-year trial that is already proving successful in raising groundwater levels and diluting nitrate levels.

To expand the project at another four sites over the next 10 years would cost about $11 million.

The trial project is essentially a pond designed to leak water underground into aquifers; water scientists are recording the effects on nearby wells Mayfield farmer Rab McDowell, a member of the MAR pilot working group, said it was a significant environment project and would help farmers meet new environmental targets around water use and nitrate leaching.

Farmers and irrigation companies do expect to pay their share of the costs but targeted or general rates could be used as another funding stream as the work benefited the wider district.

McDowell said results of the

pilot project indicated other sites in different parts of the district would benefit. Sites in the upper plains would be useful for recharging aquifers, sites in the middle plains could be used for diluting groundwater nitrates, especially around known hotspots, and sites in the lower plains could augment streams and drains.

The Ashburton Water Zone committee has endorsed the MAR project and will write to the Ashburton District Council to ask if it can keep using a council water-take consent (previously used for stockwater races that no longer exist) to continue putting water into the trial site.

Zone committee member Jackie Wright said she hoped farmers would continue their sustainability work on farm and not rely on the MAR to produce the lion’s share of environmental improvements.

McDowell said finding funding and water for the programme were the next challenges.

With Water Conservation Orders on both the Rangitata and Rakaia rivers, water could have to come from already-consented takes.

The working group will now look for people who could implement expansion of the groundwater replenishment programme.

Half million dollar target in sight

Methven Care Trust is climbing towards the half million dollar mark as it fundraises for a new resthome in the town.

The latest fundraiser involves selling high country rocks, following a home and garden tour which raised $8000 last month.

Since the trust launched its resthome project last year, it has

raised an impressive $450,000.

Building will not begin until the $5 million needed for the facility is in the bank.

Trust members are heartened by the incredible community support the project has received.

The feature rock project was a case in point, with Harmer Contracting transporting the rocks from the high country, and KT’s Contracting displaying the rocks

in its yard and delivering and installing them for buyers.

Trustee Colin Lill said Methven businesspeople and residents felt a sense of ownership for the resthome project, so were happy to support it. Chairwoman Joanna Suyker said the community-run Methven House had worked well for generations in the town and Methven Care Trust was continuing that model.

Get ready, Christmas just around the corner

Ashburton’s Santa parade just keeps on getting bigger and better says organiser Carol Johns.

She’s masterminded the event for the past five years and said she’s overwhelmed by the community support that pours in each year to keep the festive event in business and this year is no exception with at least 10 new floats taking the number of participants to well over 200, she said.

“I think the community has really taken ownership of the event now; last year it was so big that the first floats were returning to Mona Square before the last float, Santa’s, had left.”

The parade runs from Mona Square to the Ashburton Post Office on an out-and-back route that ensures no matter which side of East Street you’re standing on you have an opportunity to take a good look at every float, Johns said.

The parade formula might be tried and tested, but every year there are new additions and a few changes, she said.

“We’ve got new costumes this year and this time we’ll have clowns with 1000 bags of lollies that they’ll be handing out.”

float - that’s a huge job and Rural Transport is giving us the truck and trailer.”

While city parades such as Christchurch came with a hefty budget, Ashburton’s parade was pulled together on the smell of an

oily rag,” Johns said.

The Santa parade will begin its journey down East Street at 12.30pm on Saturday and is anticipated to run for one hour. It will be followed by a fete in the Borough School grounds.

Plane crashes, 71 killed Colombian authorities searched for answers into the crash of a chartered airliner that slammed into the Andes mountains while transporting a Brazilian soccer team whose Cinderella story had won it a spot in the finals in one of South America’s most prestigious regional tournaments. All but six of the 77 people on board were killed.

The British Aerospace 146 short-haul plane declared an emergency and lost radar contact just before 10pm, according to Colombia’s aviation agency. It said the plane’s black boxes had been recovered and were being analysed.

The aircraft, which departed from Santa Cruz, Bolivia, was carrying the Chapecoense soccer team from southern Brazil for Wednesday’s first leg of the two-game Copa Sudamericana final against Atletico Nacional of Medellin. Twentyone Brazilian journalists were also on board the flight.

Massive service to honour Fidel Castro Regional leaders and tens of thousands of Cubans filled Havana’s Plaza of the Revolution yesterday for a service honouring Fidel Castro on the wide plaza where the Cuban leader delivered fiery speeches to mammoth crowds in the years after he seized power.

The presidents of Mexico, Ecuador, Bolivia, Venezuela, Panama, South Africa and Zimbabwe, along with leaders of a host of smaller Caribbean nations, flew in to Havana to pay tribute to Castro, who

Boy star bounces back Actor James Rolleston was looking sharp in a suit at the Attitude Awards in Auckland on Tuesday night, four months after a car crash nearly cost him his life. In a tweet sent by Attitude Live, Rolleston can be seen on stage in a sharp suit and smiling at the award ceremony.

He was presenting the ACC Supreme Award at the ninth annual ceremony, which was won by Debra Lampshire, an advocate for change in the mental health system. The Attitude Awards recognise the achievements of Kiwis living with disabilities. Rolleston, who found fame starring in Taika Waititi’s Boy, was seriously injured in an Opotiki car crash on July 26.

What’s in our future?

ope for the human race is taking a rollercoaster ride in the 21st century.

There are medical science advances daily, giving rise to the vision of a human race unburdened by diseases of the modern age, such as diabetes and dementia.

Yet mankind moves towards the brink of a potential apocalypse, the spectre of which was raised this week by a visiting climate change scientist.

News of one medical science development was yesterday released by Australian researchers, who had discovered platypus venom had a long-lasting form of a hormone useful in diabetes control.

Apparently male platypus have this venom to fend off rivals during the breeding season. The hormone exists elsewhere but only in a less stable form.

The function in venom had most likely triggered the evolution of a stable form, which was “highly desirable” as a potential Type 2 diabetes treatment.

And this week there was the awarding of a $500,000 Health Research Council grant for a groundbreaking dementia study.

Parkinson’s disease is the second most common cause of dementia after Alzheimer’s and the study will look at the brains of Cantabrian sufferers.

Differences in the build up of tau, the abnormal protein associated with Parkinson’s dementia, and blood flow, will be examined.

Targeting these build ups before they cause impairment gives a better chance of delaying or even preventing onset of the disease.

The good science news is offset however, by the concerns of climate scientists.

Visiting professor Guy McPherson, from the University of Arizona, said we will all be dead in the next decade, perishing from starvation, dehydration, disease and exposure. New Zealanders would be among the last ones standing due to the country’s low population and being surrounded by large oceans which would buffer temperatures.

Brief internet research reveals he is considered a crackpot in many circles and out of step with mainsteam climate science.

Phew.

Nevertheless, it is widely accepted that climate change will threaten the human species in generations to come and we need to reduce our emissions and switch to renewable energy sources.

“Hope is a horrible idea,” says Professor McPherson. However, surely this can never be the case and anything humans can do to turn around rising temperatures is worth the effort.

R&D trails comparable countries New Zealand’s science and innovation system is trailing comparable economies in some key areas, a new report has found, sparking a fresh call for more investment in home-grown research.

An innovation commentator has also highlighted concerns with Kiwi research and development progress, calling it “anaemic”.

The Science and Innovation System Performance Report, published by the Government this week, found our sector is relatively small, but efficient when it comes to scientific publications produced per research dollar.

But while New Zealand’s research quality was better than the OECD average, it still fell behind what Australian and other “small advanced economies” like Ireland, Israel, Switzerland, Singapore and Denmark were producing.

The country produced relatively fewer graduates in STEM subjects than these comparable countries, but numbers were growing.

New Zealand was also successfully attracting significantly more qualified scientists, and technol-

ogy and engineering professionals than left overseas each year: the net inward migration of these professionals was more than 2000 in 2015.

While New Zealand’s total expenditure on research and development had grown by 77 per cent in real terms since 2000, companies were still reporting low levels of such innovation, and progress toward pushing business R and D over one per cent of GDP remained “slow but steady”.

Science and Innovation Minister Steven Joyce said the report offered a performance benchmark against other OECD countries and increased transparency about how public funding for science and innovation was being invested.

It follows last year’s National Statement of Science Investment (NSSI), which set out a 2025 vision of a “highly dynamic system” that enriched the country and made a “more measurable contribution to our productivity and wellbeing”.

“Achieving the NSSI vision will require reliable, timely information and robust evaluation of science and innovation system per-

formance,” Joyce said.

“We know that better performance data will enable us to target our growing science investments effectively and to maximise their long-term value to New Zealand.”

Science commentator and Auckland University physicist Professor Shaun Hendy said available data on the system’s performance showed that it performed well on a per-dollar basis, but could do with further investment.

“Relative to the small advanced economies, our recent performance has remained decidedly mixed across a range of measures,” Hendy said.

“While MBIE awards itself a pass mark on its goal of lifting business R and D to 1 per cent of GDP by 2018, for instance, the data in the report provide little assurance that this is on track.

Hendy noted the number of post-doctoral fellowships available for early career researchers had taken a “significant hit” a few years ago when the Government cut the country’s national postdoctoral fellowship scheme.

Brendish said the global dairy market remained volatile and industry commentators did not have a consensus on where final payout figures were likely to settle.

Killer line-up for Aorangi Young Farmer finals It’s a tough road to make the grand final of the FMG Young Farmer of the Year if you come from the Aorangi region this year.

Traditionally a strong region with six grand final winners in the past 14 years, this year looks just as tough with eight extraordinary young men vying to get through at the regional final in Methven on February 25.

The North Otago district contest and skills day provided the final two contestants this past weekend with Arjan Van’t Klooster and John Mehrtens taking out first and second.

Van’t Klooster came fourth at last year’s regional final where the winner, Athol New, went on to become the FMG Young Farmer of the Year.

And at only 25, the hot favourite to take out the Aorangi regional final has a lot of expectations on his shoulders. “Particularly from my parents,” he jokes.

Van’t Klooster and his fiancée Kelsie Chamberlain bought a 164- hectare 600-cow farm in Glenavy last year and are also

lower order sharemilking 1200 cows on his parents’ farm.

Overseeing eight staff and managing two properties and holding a Bachelor of Commerce and Agriculture means Van’t Klooster will be a major threat to the other contestants.

However, Mehrtens is considered to be another frontrunner with his all-round experience working on dairy, arable and pig farms.

He also competed in the regional final last year where he finished

sixth, and in his last eligible year in the contest he wants to give it his all to get through.

Currently working on a 650ha Waimate dryland cropping farm, Mehrtens previously worked on a Mid Canterbury dairy farm, harvested in America and worked on a large cropping and pig farm in the United Kingdom.

He also has a Bachelor of Agriculture to his name and has contest history in his family with his uncle Tim

Mehrtens being a former Aorangi regional finalist.

South Canterbury’s Toby How and Caleb Strowger and Mid Canterbury’s Cameron Black are also expected to be hot contenders to make a grand final with early speculation that whoever wins this tough contest could be on their way to winning the grand final for Aorangi for the third year in a row.

The regional finalists are: Cameron Black, David Wards, James Gunson, Robbie Hill (Mid Canterbury), Caleb Strowger, Toby How (South Canterbury), Arjan Van’t Klooster, John Mehrtens (North Otago).

Winners of the seven regional grand finals will go to the grand final at Manawatu in July next year.

Mid Canterbury’s Cameron Black is heading to the Aorangi Young Farmer of the Year final in February.

www.guardianonline.co.nz Age Concern Ashburton A number of Age Concern’s 206 Club members attended the inaugural Hip Hop session for seniors on November 23 at the Balmoral Hall. They returned suitably flushed and enthusiastic!

Age Concern’s 206 Club offers stimulation, interaction and the opportunity to enjoy music, singing, quizzes, housie, craft skills as well as a two course midday meal, morning and afternoon tea.

All enquiries are welcomed at the Age Concern office, 206 Cameron Street, phone 3086817.

A very successful Confident Driving Course was held on November 4 with 20 participants engaging in an excellent presentation from Age Concern Canterbury’s Yvonne Palmer, assisted by an officer from the Christchurch Traffic Department.

The committee look forward to hosting members at a Christmas afternoon on Friday 9 December 2pm-4pm at the Senior Centre, 206 Cameron Street.

Ashburton Branch of Ostomy Society Instead of going to a restaurant this year, our Christmas party was held in the Savage Club Rooms which lent itself to a more relaxed atmosphere and a chance for members to socialize and mingle. Treasurer, Coyla Chisnall, entertained with her display of Santas each one having a different skill which caused a lot of laughter. Lunch was a variety of delicious Dominos pizzas and wedges followed by fresh fruit salad, pavlova and icecream and to top it all off homemade Christmas cake made by Coyla. Our members in Resthomes will be receiving a sample of this cake over the next few days. Later on in the afternoon some of us drove to the Galletley’s property to view their collection of vintage cars. The weather was good and the company better. Season’s greetings to you all and we hope to see you at meetings next year.

Ashburton Electronic Organ and Keyboards Club Michael Kingsbury played for us in this evening for the last meeting of the year. The hall was decorated with coloured lights and Christmas decorations and looked lovely.

Ashburton Pakeke Lion’s Club The November meeting of Pakeke Lions Club attracted a large attendance of 79 members and partners, with only three member apologies recorded.

A special presentation was made to Lion Ken Smith with the awarding of Privileged Member status, an honour bestowed on members who have given long and committed service to the club but due to failing health are now unable to attend meetings.

Recognition was also made of the outstanding support that Ken’s wife Mary has contributed over the years.

Members would be assisting with the Borough School Fete on December 3, the Special Needs outing on December 6 and the remaining days for selling of Christmas raffle tickets.

Guest speaker Kaji Sherpa from Nepal was introduced by Lion Owen Everest.

Kaji is now a farmer near Kathmandu where surprisingly sugar cane along with millet, maize, potatoes and other similar crops are grown at an elevation equivalent to halfway up Mt Cook.

Kaji trained to become a Sherpa and eventually made eight expeditions to the top of Mt Everest. Sherpas’ ages range from 15 to 77 years. The talk was illustrated with photos of the spectacular Himalayas and items of interest such as base camp, yak, the mode of transport.

Then everyone joined in with the singing of Christmas songs with Margaret playing the piano.

Raffle prizes were then drawn and distributed; followed by another round of entertainment from Roger, Alison and Margaret.

Winners of the lucky draw prizes were announced by Natalie, and the prizes were distributed.

Greer thanked the entertainers and presented each with a gift.

Peter thanked members for their generous contributions to the local foodbanks and wished all a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. This was followed by a generous Christmas themed afternoon tea.

Next meeting February 20, 2017; Mayor Donna Favel has been invited to speak, but as yet has not confirmed her availability.

Ashburton U3A A successful year concluded in November as Club members and visitors were welcomed by President Linda Baker. Anne Fleming then introduced Roanna Dalziel, Literary Manager at The Court Theatre, Christchurch who presented an overview of the Arts scene in Christchurch post-earthquake and focusing particularly on The Court.

After time in the UK working as an actor as well as a practising lawyer, Roanna returned to New Zealand to work for Creative New Zealand as a Senior Arts Advisor. Acknowledging the huge amount of work achieved over the past five years, she is constantly seeing challenges in Christchurch for the arts.

In the wake of the February 22, 2011 quake which put paid to The Court’s premises at The Arts Centre, leaving everything behind including an extensive costume department, the hunt was on for alternative premises along with most other groups.

The Shed was a possibility providing funds could be raised to construct a theatre within. The Sponsors Board in the foyer tells a true story of generosity while friends and members were busy raising funds by various means.

Months later The Court re-aunched itself with a Roger Hall play but would an audience turn up with the ongoing aftershocks? 150,000 did over the next 12 months and support has continued.

The Court Theatre is committed to eventually returning to the city centre.

Ms Dalziel was thanked by Bob Engelbrecht. Members were extended the compliments of the season and reminded that U3A will resume on Tuesday February 28, 2017.

Wim Melchers brought along a sample of fake wood, used for fencing, floors, as it will not rot, does not require painting.

Dave Busby demonstrated making a miniature bird house on a sample from the USA. With a section of branch wood between centres, he turned a spigot at one end, remounted and bored a hole at the other end using a drill and tail stock, hot glued the end piece back into place. The rest of the section was rounded off, a hole drilled into the side and eventually a bird home was completed.

President Colleen Hands welcomed members on November 24. Apologies were received. Hope McIntosh played piano, while the RSA song was sung. Also Happy Birthday to those celebrating. Sympathy was given to anyone who has sadly lost a loved one. Sick members were wished a speedy recovery, especially our patroness.

Colleen wished Merry Christmas to members who won’t be at the Christmas meal. She also thanked those who play the piano and write Guardian reports.

Sue and her Line Dancers entertained us. They meet at the Balmoral Hall on a Thursday morning. They clearly get pleasure from participating. The music and dancing was really enjoyed with Colleen joining in the last item. The ladies were thanked for giving up time to come along.

The Plains Ladies Club It was a lovely sunny morning for our Christmas meeting held at Marg and Bob Verrall’s.

Sixty-nine members travelled by car to visit the gardens and enjoy morning tea. The 1.8ha gardens of today are set among 5ha of the original homestead trees, oak, poplars, wellingtonia, cherry and willow trees, planted after the land was settled in 1853.

The gardens have developed around where the original homestead once stood.

The box hedging along the winding drive has been extended enhancing the many plantings over the past 40 years of rhododendrons, modern roses, maples and perennials. Large manicured lawns make this a very peaceful setting.

While members were enjoying relaxing in the garden, President Wilma reminded those who are going on the Black Cat ferry trip on Wednesday, November 30 that the bus leaves at 10am from The Hotel Ashburton.

The morning came to a close with several raffles being drawn and Wilma wishing everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

The next meeting is January 23, 2017.

SVG set to win Supercars They haven’t touched the Bledisloe Cup trophy since 2002, they don’t even hold the ChappellHadlee cricket trophy and now Australia is only three days away from losing the Supercars championship to New Zealand.

That’s right, in yet another blow for everyone that loves green and gold, Holden driver Shane Van Gisbergen will end Australia’s 25-year stranglehold on the V8 championship trophy to become the first Kiwi to win the title since Jim Richards in 1991.

And that is only the beginning of the pain for Aussie Supercars fans with New Zealand legend Greg Murphy predicting Van Gisbergen will spearhead a new era of Kiwi dominance that could last a decade.

“It’s not just Shane Van Gisbergen,” Murphy said.

“He is obviously the right guy in the right team right now but we also have Scott McLaughlin and Fabian Coulthard who will challenge for titles.”

Van Gisbergen will become just the third Kiwi driver to win an Australian Touring car title this weekend if he survives an unlikely all or nothing bid from Red Bull Racing Australia teammate Jamie Whincup on the streets of Sydney.

Radradra in court Semi Radradra has been forced to surrender his passport after he appeared in Parramatta Local Court yesterday. The Parramatta Eels winger failed to show for a hearing relating to domestic violence charges on Monday as he cared for his ill father in Fiji. Magistrate Tim Keady gave Radradra 48 hours to provide sufficient documentation for missing the original hearing, otherwise he could be found in breach of his bail. Radradra, was not required to speak during yesterday’s hearing.

Big budget blowout

Shane Van Gisbergen could be crowned Supercars champion this weekend. ing Sydney 500, which will begin on the streets of Sydney Olympic Park with practice on Friday, the new kid on the Red Bull block leads by 191 points and is guaranteed to lock up the title on Saturday if he finishes fifth or better.

And this is just the beginning for the driver they call the “Wild Thing” with four-time Bathurst champion Murphy declaring he is already a great.

Murphy said the soon to be

champion was already a household name in New Zealand and arguably the country’s best sporting export after the All Blacks.

“He has done everything to put himself on the radar,” Murphy said.

“Him, Scott and Fabian are already well known in New Zealand. They follow the sport religiously and he is a genuine sporting identity back home and winning the championship will

just cement that.

“We have had Kiwis competing in this sport forever and a day.

And we haven’t won a title since 1991. This is going to mean a lot to our nation. This will be huge for Kiwi sports freaks all over.”

Yep, the “Gis” is set to be a big deal in New Zealand. He may become the most famous nonrugby player in New Zealand who hasn’t scaled Mt Everest.

Montoya to drive for Penske at Indy 500 Juan Pablo Montoya has accepted an offer to race the Indianapolis 500 for Team Penske and will not drive full-time in IndyCar next season.

Montoya said the offer was the “best choice” for the Colombian.

Mumm in, Genia out Wallabies flanker Dean Mumm has been cleared to face England at Twickenham on Saturday by a World Rugby independent disciplinary committee. Sport Eye injury revealed Ross Taylor has provided a graphic illustration of the eye injury that will keep him out of the game until 2017.

The Black Caps batsman tweeted an extreme close-up photo of his left eye as he prepares to go under the knife to remove the pterygium – a growth on the tissue that lines the eyelids. Taylor told media last week he has had the pterygium for “five or six years”, but has seen it deteriorate over the past few months and the decision was made that surgical intervention was required.

Thrills, skills on display

Thrilling plays and great miniball skills were on display in the weekend at the Oxford Street Basketball Stadium for the Basketball Mid Canterbury Miniball finals.

Last Sunday marked the end of the junior mini-ball season and the Ashburton Christian School Rams came out on top against the Ashburton Borough Warriors 39-26, to claim the final of the Year 6 mixed grade.

In the Year 6 girls’ grade the Hinds Hornets were too good

for St Joseph’s Minibells, beating them 23-10.

However, the St Joseph’s Flash Bros fared better in the Year 6 boys’ grade, winning 3720 against the Allenton School Aces 61.

The Netherby Thunder were triumphant in the Year 5 mixed grade after they beat The Mount Somers Thunder 29-12.

In the Year 5 girls’ grade the Allenton Aces 52 won by 10 points against the St Joseph’s Cavaliers with a final scorecard of 22-12.

The Year 5 boys’ final was

much tighter as the Tinwald Hot Shots battled it out against the Longbeach Bulls. The Bulls were too good as they beat the Hot Shots 23-19, by just four points.

Mid Canterbury Basketball vice-president Michael Clark is happy with the support shown by the more than 200 family and friends who attended the games.

Clark is pleased with the skills being shown by the children.

He said basketball is growing in Ashburton with more people playing each year.

Three St Joseph’s students

took home the Year 6 MVP awards, with Deborah Muchiri taking the girls’ and Fletcher and Ollie Hobbs sharing the boys’ award.

Allenton School’s Holly-Jane Feutz claimed the Year 5 girls’ MVP and Longbeach School’s Kamal Larry took the Year 5 boys’ award.

The basketball women’s semifinal was also played with the Rakaia Women beating the Rebels 88-36.

Rakaia will play MSA next Monday in the final at the Ashburton EA Networks Centre.

Breakers star arrested for alleged assault Star New Zealand Breakers basketball player Corey Webster has been arrested for assault following an incident at an Auckland bar yesterday morning.

Police confirmed a 28-yearold man had been charged with

assault, following an incident at a Takapuna bar.

Police were called to reports of a fight at The Takapuna Bar about 12.30am, a police spokeswoman said.

The victim was not seriously injured.

The accused had been bailed and would appear in the North Shore District Court on Monday, the spokeswoman said.

It was Webster’s birthday on Tuesday.

Webster has been a standout player for the Breakers in

recent seasons, even attracting the attention of American NBA scouts.

The Tall Blacks star is averaging 11 points a game this season and was the fourth highest scorer in the Australian NBL competition last season.

Britain’s only other three-time world champion Jackie Stewart slammed Lewis Hamilton’s selfishness, calling him “a little ballerina” whom Mercedes should cut loose if he refused to follow their orders again.

Hamilton was vying with teammate Nico Rosberg for the title. Hamilton slowed down when in the lead to try and force Rosberg into a pack with rival cars and prevent him from climbing up the grid, ignoring Mercedes’ instructions in the process.

Bautista Agut top seed Defending champion Roberto Bautista Agut is the top seed for January’s ASB men’s tennis classic, with the full field just released. The world number 14 is one of two top 20 players alongside 19th ranked John Isner, but the tournament drawcard, Argentine Juan Martin del Potro, is unseeded. On Monday, del Potro capped his stellar year by inspiring Argentina to their first Davis Cup victory. Del Potro fought back from two sets down to beat world no. 6 Marin Cilic in five sets, and almost five hours, in what he called, one of the biggest wins of his career.
