Mid Canterbury school principals say they have no hard and fast rules about youngsters walking to school alone, but they teach road safety and expect parents to do the same. A coroner investigating the death of a six-year-old Gisborne girl has said she should not have gone to and from school unaccompanied by an adult. Carla Neems was run over by a rubbish truck in 2017 as she moved in front of the truck into her driveway; the driver, who had stopped to pick up refuse, did not see her. The coroner said had Carla been with an adult, she would likely still be alive.

Allenton School principal Bruce Tilby said road safety was important for the school as it was bordered by busy Allens Road and Harrison Street. Pedestrian crossings, manned before and after school, allowed students and family members to cross safely. The school also had a successful walking bus, which relied on volunteers to escort a group of children as they walked to school. He said not many students walked to school alone. Juniors, especially, were often accompanied by parents or caregivers. Many were dropped off at the school by car. The school did not specify when students could walk unaccompanied but
relied on parents to assess their child’s road safety awareness and make a decision. “I would say most of our Allenton parents are road safety conscious and I talk about it a lot in the newsletters. “There are always some who have no road sense at all. “Children are unpredictable on the road.” Hampstead School principal Peter Melrose said many of his students were transported to school, rather than walking.
