An Ashburton burglary victim has praised police work on an ongoing investigation, despite national stats showing most go unsolved.

Paul Wylie, owner of Cyclerama on Burnett Street, suffered a burglary last month when the store was broken into and a $1200 bicycle was stolen.

The Momentum iRide Paul Rocker 1 mountain bike was stolen in the early hours of June 10, after a thief chiselled a hole in the front door and a large window on the side of the shop was also smashed.

He said he was informed about the break-in by his security company and was met by police at the scene.

Mr Wylie said unfortunately the bike had not yet been recovered however, police have been doing a good job and the investigation is ongoing.

He said police have called him a couple of times over the past few weeks to give him an upWylie date and touch base.

A June release by Statistics New Zealand showed the overall “victimisation rate” increased by 3.1 per cent from 2014/15 to 2015/16.

Following the release Police Minister

Judith Collins said from this month police will treat house break-ins as needing greater urgency.

The 3.1 per cent rise equates to 12,060 more victimisations however, a person can be victimised more than once per year.

“From this increase, 72 per cent is attributable to burglaries. Police remain committed to improving burglary resolution rates and reducing the number of burglaries.”

A series run by The NZ Herald revealed 164 burglaries went unsolved nationwide each day.

The Hitting Home series ran in March and reported that the national average resolution rate for burglaries fell to single figures for 2015, with only 9.3 per cent solved in the year to December 31.

Help for first home buyers

Mine still closed after accident

First home-buyers will be able to earn more and buy more expensive houses but still qualify for a government housing subsidy, following changes announced yesterday.

Building and Housing Minister Nick Smith said the Government would increase income and house price caps on the KiwiSaver HomeStart scheme to ensure it was helping people into their first house.

The scheme offers a grant of up

to $10,000 for an existing house, and $20,000 for a new house to add to a deposit for first homebuyers.

Due to a rise in both income levels and house prices since the scheme was first announced, increases in the limits were needed, Smith said.

Income caps would increase from $80,000 to $85,000 for a single person and from $120,000 to $130,000 for a couple.

House price caps would

increase from the existing $350,000, $450,000 and $550,000 depending on region to $400,000, $500,000 and $600,000 for an existing home, and to $450,000, $550,000 and $650,000 for a new home.

“This reflects the $50,000 increase in the national median house price since the scheme began,” Smith said. “We are deliberately increasing the cap for new homes by an additional $50,000 to help drive growth in new resi-

dential construction.”

The highest price range applied only to Auckland.

The next range is for Wellington, Christchurch, Hamilton, Tauranga, Queenstown and Nelson-Tasman. The lowest range is for the rest of the country. The changes will come in from today.

The caps will also apply to Welcome Home loans. Those loans enable first home buyers to buy with a 10 per cent deposit.

Gamblers tightening wallets Times might be a bit tougher around the Ashburton District, and that is translating into fewer dollars spent on the pokie machines.

Over the three months to June 30, Ashburton gamblers slipped $1.525 million dollars into gaming machines, hoping for a quick pay day.

The number was slightly down on the same period in 2015 when $1.562 million dollars were spent.

For the April–June quarter in 2014 punters spent $1.518 on games of chance.

Ashburton continues to be a low contributor to New Zealand’s overall gaming machine spend, at 0.71 per cent of the national total.

For the first half of this year $2.9798 million were spent on gaming machines, about $85 for every man, woman and child in the district.

This was down on the spend for the same period in 2015 when the amount spent totalled $3.045 million.

Getting healthy with kombucha The fermented tea kombucha was the star of the night during a Back to Basics fundraiser at Ashburton’s New Life Church on Friday.

While the fundraiser was based around the documentary Food Matters, organiser Julia Crosson said the kombucha bar was a huge hit with every-

one at the event. Kombucha is a fermented tea that is claimed to have health benefits for gut health and strengthening the immune system.

She said the documentary was a real eye opener and was based on the belief that food should be the body’s medicine.

“It was factual, not emotional

and it was pretty inspirational,” she said.

The event was attended by about 70 people and many of those indicated they were keen to learn how to make kombucha. Experts Grace and Brent Henry are planning to take classes to share their knowledge.

The Waihi mine where a worker was killed will remain closed until Wednesday as staff prepare to attend his tangi today.

Tipiwai Stainton, 29, died on Thursday night when the large front-end loader, also known as a bogger, he was operating fell down a hole he was backfilling with rock in OceanaGold’s Correnso mine.

OceanaGold spokesman Kit Wilson confirmed the mine would not re-open until Wednesday morning following a blessing.

Staff have been told to meet at the Waihi Memorial Hall at 7.30am on Wednesday before returning to work.

“You can’t get on site. The only thing we’ve got running is essential services like water treatment.

The mill is not turning, we are not producing, staff are not here.”

Mr Wilson said the reason for the closure was to both show a mark of respect and allow for Police and WorkSafe New Zealand to complete the extensive investigations.

The first blessings were given on Friday morning to the mine vehicle which removed Stainton’s body from the mine and to the entrance of the site so investigations could begin.

Staff including members of the mine rescue team which Stainton was a part of travelled about two hours to the Maraenui Marae near Te Kaha to assist with tangi preparations. It is understood his body was taken to the marae on Saturday.

Mr Wilson did not know exact numbers, but said a large number of the company’s 300 workers were expected to attend the tangi to farewell their workmate today. Stainton was an experienced miner who had worked at the company for eight years and had recently been made a leader of one of the mine rescue teams.

Civic centre project ready to launch

The facts, figures and finer details about Ashburton’s $16 million civic centre and library rebuild have been prepared, but for now they are under wraps.

Last week the Ashburton District Council gave the green light for the project to move to stage two, public consultation.

As the council and consultants Opus have worked through stage

one, the number of site options has narrowed and now includes just four - the existing council site in Baring Square west for either a rebuild or a strengthen and extension of the existing library. Both options on this site would include a new library.

Other sites under consideration are in the Eastfield complex, land on the corner of Cameron and Cass streets where the Balmoral Hall is located or a complex that

would be built where the Baring Square Church and the Baring Square east council building stand.

With each option, the library will move from its Havelock Street site to be part of the new civic build.

The council earlier decided strengthening and reshaping the existing library to meet modern needs and standards would come with too high a price tag.

Councillors and council staff met with Opus designers last week to fine-tune the options and costings and these will shortly be made public.

When the project is put out for public comment it will include details of how each site scored against evaluation criteria.

Details of each project will be displayed on large panels and will come with a preferred option identified.

The costs will include fit-out and any relocation costs that would be required if the current council building was strengthened and renovated.

The summary will also show possible property sales costs and the estimated net cost of each project.

No date has yet been set for the project to go public and the second stage of public consultation to begin.

Concert boosts fundraising efforts

If members of the Ashburton Phoenix Chorus were in any doubt they’re heading for the big time, those doubts were dispelled when they performed in the Ashburton Trust Event Centre during a fundraising concert on Friday night.

Chorus members were joined by five past members for an event that choir manager Carolyn Clough described as “sensational”.

“It was a fantastic celebration of the Phoenix Chorus past and present,” she said.

Five past chorus members Zara Ballara, Luke Glendinning, Jack Hanrahan, Tom Kitchen and Olivia Brown all performed during the evening and each brought something special to the event, Mrs Clough said.

If there was a star of the evening it was Ballara who has lived, taught and performed in London, Mrs Clough said.

“Wow. She brought the whole performance to a new level and I think this event relaunched her to Ashburton audiences.”

As much as the concert was

about the guest performers, it was very much Phoenix’s night, she said.

“They performed beautifully, they were polished and slick and they loved the experience and were so excited to walk out on the stage to a big audience. If it didn’t feel real before, it will now.”

The fundraising concert was

held to boost funds for the chorus to compete as a finalist in the Glee! 2016 performing arts competition on Australia’s Gold Coast.

While audition videos were sent to the organisers in April, the chorus did not find out it had made the finals until June 23 and that meant a major fundraising campaign had to be launched and

wrapped up quickly.

“We’re so grateful to everyone in the community for their support.

We had Rotary virtually knocking on the door, saying what can we do to help,” Mrs Clough said.

The 25 choir members and their support team leave early Thursday for the competition which runs until Saturday.

Skiers trigger avalanche Skiers have triggered an avalanche near Wanaka.

The group of four were in an “out-of-bounds” area in the Hidden Valley area of Treble Cone about 12.30pm when the avalanche was triggered but they managed to ski out safely.

“Before doing so they checked

the debris and carried out a transceiver sweep of the site which did not reveal any signals,” a spokesman said.

“The group also searched for visual tracks and any further clues outside of the area and the full length of the debris, and did not find any evidence of other in-

dividuals or groups in the area at the time.”

The spokesman said the avalanche was a “size 2”, on a scale of five, five being the largest.

It was up to half a metre deep in open terrain.

alerted mountain workers.

Treble Cone initiated its search and rescue procedures and informed Wanaka police.

A helicopter, Treble Cone patrollers and two search dogs with handlers are in the area to search the debris.

Charged over robbery A 34-year-old Mt Roskill man has been arrested and charged with 15 aggravated robberies three days after police released CCTV footage of an assault and robbery at a Papatoetoe dairy. The man will appear in Manukau District Court today. The assault, which took place on July 7, was described

by Counties Manukau Detective Inspector Fa’amanuia Va’aelua as “sickening”. The robber had been armed with a knife, which broke during the assault on a shopkeeper. The worker assaulted was not seriously hurt.

Hit-and-run An early morning hit-and-run has left two people with serious injuries in Wellington. Emergency services were called to the intersection of Adelaide and Cuba St in Petone at about 1.30am yesterday where two cars crashed.

A man from one of the vehicles ditched his car and sprinted away on foot, while the injured occupants of the second car called for help, a police spokesman said.

Two people were transported to Hutt Hospital in a serious condition.

A friendship deal that will next month be signed between Ashburton and the Chinese city of Xianyang, will be about creating opportunities across wide-ranging issues, says mayor Angus McKay. Last year a delegation of civic and business leaders from the Ashburton District visited sister Chinese sister city Puyang and while there travelled to Xianyang, home base for the Fineboon Dairy giant, partners in the New Zealand Dairy Co-operative Group, that plans to develop a goat milk factory in Ashburton.

During that visit, Mr McKay said there was a clear message that Xianyang was keen to have closer links with Ashburton.

And next month an 11-strong delegation will arrive in Ashburton to sign a friendship deal.

While here the group will visit a number of local businesses that have trade links with Asia, as well as touring the district’s main business areas and scenic attractions.

“They were very taken with the presentation we made when we were over there and said then they were keen to return the visit.”

It is planned to sign a friendship agreement while the delegation is in Ashburton and this could grow in the future into a sister city relationship, Mr McKay said.

The group will arrive in Ashburton on August 19.

Mayfield winter market a hit When the Mayfield hall’s doors opened on Saturday morning, stallholders at the village’s Marvellous Winter Market were swamped by bargain hunters and six hours later, they went home exhausted but happy.

The inaugural winter market succeeded all expectations in terms of numbers through the door, said organiser Janine Sundberg.

“It was amazing, a real success and I’ve had really good

feedback from the stall holders.”

She is not ruling out running a similar event again next winter.

“But I just want to catch my breath first,” she said.

A silver and white car linked to the shooting of a 14-year-old boy in June has been recovered. The discovery of the vehicle comes after police appealed to the public on Friday asking for any information about its whereabouts.

The car, which had a silver panel on the driver’s side, was involved in the shooting of the teenager in the suburb of Bader, Hamilton on June 16. The boy was left with minor injuries. Police thanked the public for their help and are following new lines of inquiry as a result of a forensic examination.

In 1990 Milner Jacob bought a car for $400. It had been used by its former owner to drag a boat around.

Ten years later he was driving around in a fully restored 1954 Mark I Armstrong Siddeley Sapphire.

Milner wouldn’t say how much he spent on restoring the car but did say he and his wife tossed up between an around-the-world trip or doing-up the car.

The car won.

The company who manufactured the car, Armstrong, also happened to be the first company to make a jet engine, which they called the Sapphire.

“On the bonnet you can see two little engines, they are a tribute to the sapphire engines, just like the car is,” Milner said.

The doors on the Siddeley Sapphire are also something special.

These types of doors are commonly known as suicide doors

and they open the opposite way, meaning the hinges are closer to the back doors instead of near the bonnet.

The Siddeley Sapphire weighs two-and-a-half tons and under the hood is a three-and-a-half litre, sixcylinder engine.

Milner said the car often gets used as a wedding car and he can’t drive it anywhere without a few people staring.

“We were driving up to Cromwell one summer to visit my son

and his family and while we were parked at the camping ground some American fellas were circling around, kicking at the tyres and I came up to them and told them about the car and they said to me ‘Where did you get one of these from’?,” he said.

When painting the outside of the car, Milner said he wanted a light red and a light grey, but after trying six or seven different shades, decided none of them were quite right.

Someone suggested he try out silver instead.

“It’s gotta be it, it just had to be right”.

Milner said the red seats are the executive colour, which he said you can only get if you ordered the car before it had been manufactured.

“The car is made of a solid metal, not tin, meaning it is much tougher than most cars.

“There isn’t a record of someone dying in a Sapphire, lots of crashes, but no deaths,” he said.

Complaints could land The Block in trouble Worksafe NZ will be meeting with producers of TV show The Block over adherence to basic health and safety rules following complaints from viewers.

Members of the public have raised concerns about the DIY construction show with the Government’s health and safety regulator, which says it is looking into the matter.

The show, which is in its fifth season in New Zealand, follows four couples as they renovate a property and sell it at auction.

Guy Harris, a carpentry tutor at Whitireia in Wellington, told Fairfax that some practices by the contestants appeared to breach health and safety standards. Apprentices at his polytech found the lack of standards hypocritical, he said.

“The apprentices from all over the district come in and say ‘How come The Block doesn’t have to follow the rules?’“ People working under scaffolding had not worn hard hats, and some people had worked on scaffolding two or three storeys

up without a harness, he said. Others had not used earmuffs or safety goggles.

A Worksafe spokesperson said it had received complaints from viewers of the The Block and would be meeting with its producers “in the next few weeks”. The show had made some improvements since the previous season, the spokesperson said, but the public was still raising concerns about practices on the show.

“We have noted improvements for controlling high-risk activities, like working at height.”

Worksafe met with the producers in 2014 and last year.

“We discussed various health and safety issues brought to our attention by viewers,” the spokesperson said.

Warner Bros NZ, which produced the The Block, told Fairfax that everyone involved was briefed about health and safety rules, and that no one had been seriously injured since the show began in 2012.

Rotarian awarded fellowship Ashburton Rotarian Ray McLaren was last week awarded a prestigious Paul Harris fellowship.

The presentation of a Paul Harris Fellow recognition is the Rotary Foundation’s way of expressing its appreciation for a substantial contribution to its humanitarian and educational programmes.

It is named after the founder of Rotary, Paul Harris, a Chicago lawyer who started the organisation with three business associates in 1905.

Mr McLaren joined the Ashburton Plains Rotary Club in 1986 and over 30 years has been a director of most of the committees within the organisation.

He has chaired a number of sub-com-

mittees, including the club’s flagship classic car run.

Club member Malcolm Tarbotton said Mr McLaren had actively supported all the club’s activities. Although quiet by nature, Mr McLaren was first to working bees to pick potatoes, split firewood, deliver meals on wheels, assist with car parking and much more. “He has always been there when help is needed.”

Mr McLaren has worked for Gluyas Motor Group since 1982 and is also president of the Black and Coloured Sheep Breeders Association of Mid Canterbury.

Mr Tarbotton said Mr McLaren had given outstanding service for a very long time.

Conditions force evacuation White-out conditions at Mt Ruapehu forced the evacuation of dozens of people from the slopes yesterday.

A blizzard that hit the mountain had dumped stacks of snow on the mountain’s Whakapapa and Turoa skifields overnight – and left around 30 people trapped in nearby lodges.

A wayward Hong Kong matriarch arrives in New Zealand, uninvited, for her grand-daughter’s wedding.

Cue cultural misunderstandings, some very confused backpackers – and Por Por’s family having to face a few home truths.

Expect a few tears and some laughter in Hweiling Ow’s dazzling performance in Under the Same Moon, in which she plays three generations of one family.

Actor and producer, Hweiling is a regular performer on stage, screen and online. In 2014 she garnered rave reviews and standing ovations in Carl Nixon’s Two Fish ’n’ a Scoop at Dunedin’s Fortune Theatre, and later played the same role in Centrepoint Theatre, Palmerston North.

Although the play is fictional, award-winning playwright Renee Liang has drawn from memories of her two Chinese grandmothers, to write this loving tribute to families separated by time and distance. The set features images drawn from Li-

ang’s own family album.

Performed in English, the play is suitable for school groups, families (ages seven and over), those interested in the migrant experience, and anyone up for a warm and funny night out at the theatre.

Hweiling has appeared on Shortland Street, as the mandarin teacher in My Weddings and Other Secrets, as a real estate agent in Agent Anna and has a recurring role in the Flat 3 web series, written by Renee’s sister Roseanne Liang.

Hweiling has worked as a producer and actor in the 48 hours

film festival competition, winning best actress in 2014. She is originally from Malaysia and speaks Hokkien, Cantonese, Mandarin and Malay.

The play is directed by Borni Te Rongopai Tukiwaho, with lighting and sound design by Sam Mence and set design by Deborah McGuire.

Under the Same Moon will be performed at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre on September 28, courtesy of the Arts on Tour NZ Trust as part of a nationwide tour.

Ashburton’s own Tainui Kuru will play the lead role of Danny Zukko in the musical Grease when it plays here on November 24 at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre.

Kuru, head boy at Ashburton College in 2009, went on to graduate from NASDA with a Bachelor of Performing Arts in 2012.

He has established himself on New Zealand’s entertainment scene.

Tradition versus change on the field Sue Newman

hether you’re a rugby fan or not, you won’t have escaped the furore that’s going on around Ashburton at the moment, all over a rugby match.

The Watters Cup is the pinnacle of the Ashburton District’s rugby season. Making it to the final is what every senior team strives for and winning is what they all dream of.

Winning, however, means just that. A final is made up of two teams, one teams wins and the other team loses. That doesn’t happen if the match is the Watters Cup. On Saturday Rakaia and Southern battled it out at the Ashburton Showgrounds. The players played their hearts out and the spectators urged their team on with spirit and full voice. Everyone wanted a winner, but that’s not what we got. After 90 minutes when the full time whistle blew the score was tied - 26-all.

In any other match, for any other trophy the game would have gone into extra time. Not the Watters Cup. It seems the rules laid down 90 years ago when William Watters donated the cup were that the score at the final whistle was the score. No extra time. If the game was a draw then the trophy was shared.

That was 90 years ago in a more gentlemanly age, but what was okay in 1926 may not be considered okay today. Sport is not about co-leaders and shared glory, it’s about winners and losers.

Saturday’s result has the community talking. The die-hard traditionalists believe the old rules should stay, but there’s a huge groundswell for change.

The Watters Cup debacle won’t be the only one where old rules simply don’t fit modern day needs and attitudes to sport.

Around the district there are probably dozens of trophies with quirky rules that are now lying in cupboards because their rules don’t match modern needs. And that’s a shame. It means while the trophies languish, unpresented, the stories behind their donors are forgotten.

It is fantastic that the Watters Cup is not far short of its 100th birthday, but perhaps it’s time the Mid Canterbury Rugby Union took a look at its presentation criteria, bit the bullet and moved it into the 21st century.

YOUR VIEW Lot 9 consent As a voter I (and I’m sure other voters) would find it very helpful if the two councillors who want to cancel the Lot 9 consent could tell us what cancellation would achieve in a practical sense.

I understand the symbolism involved, but hope that the people concerned are above simply pandering to a noisy minority in order to garner a few votes.

I also understand the practical arguments for retaining the status quo and would appreciate hearing practical arguments from the cancellation point of view.

My impression is that over allocation of water is an Ashburton River issue and that the underground water, around Ashburton, is not over allocated.

Again I would appreciate some factual information on this question.

Perhaps you can persuade ECan to break their silence and give us some authoritative comment.

Clearly, decisions of this nature should be based on factual information and scientific opinion.

The more we can shine the

hard light of facts and science on issues such as this the less we will be influenced by emotion, speculation and rumour.

An informed voter makes better decisions.

ecently I had the opportunity to host two of my Parliamentary colleagues, National MPs Stuart Smith and Barbara Kuriger, for a series of meetings in the Rangitata electorate.

Under the banner of Provincial Priorities, the meetings were part of a series held in provincial electorates throughout New Zealand over the past year. These meetings have given an opportunity to those outside urban areas to tell us what they think the priorities are for their area and raise any issues which concern them.

The MPs spoke about the value of getting out into the more rural parts of New Zealand both from the perspective of learning about what was happening in the electorates they visited but also how those issues were reflected back in their own electorates.

While numbers turning out weren’t large, the range of issues raised was wide and very diverse.

At the Hinds meeting issues centred mostly on education and particularly access and choice of good quality early childhood education (ECE) for rural families.

Qualified ECE teacher ratios and Government spending on ECE, which included an extra $397 million in Budget 2016, were also discussed along with changing demands on rural families.

Among other education issues

raised were teaching of financial literacy and capability, and trades training.

The Methven meeting considered a completely different set of issues including local government reorganisation. I was able to tell the group that the current legislation being considered by the Parliament was about enabling councils to work together and not a way to force councils to amalgamate.

Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) were also the topic of much discussion, especially in the light of the United Kingdom’s Brexit vote and where this would leave our trading future with the European Union.

Roading issues, which were described by one attendee as the biggest concern facing the Ashburton District, were also given a good airing. Concerns about the increase in heavy truck traffic and general traffic were voiced.

I explained that the equation for district roading funding had been adjusted recently and that it was up to local councils to apply for further funding if they had special cases which required more money.

It was noted that the Ashburton District Council’s roading funding had been increased.

Other transport matters discussed included road tolls, changes to left-hand turning rules, KiwiRail and coastal shipping.

The meeting concluded with a brief discussion on water ownership, storage, irrigation technology and water allocation.

Getting out and about and hearing first-hand from constituents about what concerns them is valuable for any MP. Our day of meetings in Rangitata helped me answer some concerns and raised some issues which I will consider further.

Turkey to rein in forces Turkey will shut down its military academies and put the armed forces under the command of the defence minister, President Tayyip Erdogan said in a move designed to bring the military under tighter government control after a failed coup.

The changes, some of which Erdogan said would likely be announced in the government’s official gazette today, come after more than 1700 military personnel were dishonourably discharged for their role in the abortive July 15-16 putsch.

Erdogan, who narrowly escaped capture and possible death on the night of the coup, said the military, NATO’s secondbiggest, needed “fresh blood”.

The dishonourable discharges included around 40 per cent of Turkey’s admirals and generals.

Turkey accuses US-based Islamic cleric Fethullah Gulen of orchestrating the putsch, in which a faction of the military commandeered tanks, helicopters and fighter jets and attempted to topple the government. Erdogan has said 237 people were killed and more than 2100 wounded.

Gulen, who has lived in self-imposed exile in the United States for years, denies the charge and has condemned the coup.

So far, more than 60,000 people in the military, judiciary, civil service and schools have been either detained, removed or suspended over suspected links with Gulen.

Turkey’s Western allies condemned the attempted putsch, but have been rattled by the scale of the resulting crackdown.

“Our armed forces will be much stronger with the latest decree we are preparing.

Our force commanders will report to the defence minister,” Erdogan said in an interview on Saturday with A Haber, a private broadcaster.

“Military schools will be shut down ...

We will establish a national defence university.”

He also said he wanted the national intelligence agency and the chief of general staff, the most senior military officer, to report directly to the presidency, moves that would require a constitutional change and therefore the backing of opposition par-

ties. Both the general staff and the intelligence agency now report to the prime minister’s office. Putting them under the president’s overall direction would be in line with Erdogan’s push for a new constitution centred on a strong executive presidency.

Erdogan also said that a total of 10,137 people have been formally arrested following the coup. European leaders worry that their differences with Erdogan could prompt him to put an end to a historic deal, agreed in March, to stem the wave of migrants to Europe.

“The success of the pact so far is fragile. President Erdogan has several times hinted he wants to terminate the agreement,” European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker told Austria’s Kurier newspaper in an interview, when asked if the pact could fall apart.

Erdogan has called on Washington to extradite Gulen. President Barack Obama last week insisted Turkey must first present evidence of Gulen’s alleged complicity.

Thrones coming to an end HBO has confirmed what Game of Thrones fans never wanted to hear: The fantasy-thriller phenomenon will be coming to an end after Season 8.

Recently HBO renewed the series adapted from George RR Martin’s novels - for a shortened seventh season consisting of seven episodes. The eighth season will bring the saga to a close. The number of episodes for that last cycle has not been determined, HBO programming chief Casey Bloys said at the Television Critics Association’s summer conference.

“We’ll take as many as the (producers) will give us,” he said. After that, a spinoff remains a possibility.

Many IS leaders ‘fleeing’ Many Islamic State leaders have fled Mosul with their families towards Syria ahead of a planned offensive by US-backed Iraqi forces on the city.

Iraq’s defence minister Khaled al-Obeidi said yesterday he had intelligence of increasing conflict, especially over financial issues, among ultra-hardline militants of the group known as Daesh in Arabic by its enemies.

“Many Daesh families and leaders in Mosul have sold their property and sneaked out towards Syria, and a segment even tried to sneak out towards (Iraq’s Kurdish) region”, he said.

Islamic State has lost at least half the territory it seized in Iraq in 2014. The group has also lost territory in Syria, where it emerged amid a civil war which is now in its sixth year, but US-backed rebel forces there have had less success in beating it back.

Fighters in Mosul, the group’s de facto capital in Iraq and the largest city under its control anywhere across its self-proclaimed caliphate, are thought to number in the thousands but probably under 10,000.

Iraq is expected to mobilise up to 30,000 members of the armed forces to retake the city in co-ordination with US-led coalition air support.

The campaign has gained momentum in recent weeks after government forces restored Falluja and retook a key air base south of Mosul, though some officials still question whether the military will be ready. - Reuters

Hot air balloon crash kills 16 A hot-air balloon burst into flames over central Texas after apparently striking power lines and plunged into a field, killing all 16 people aboard.

The US Federal Aviation Administration said the fiery crash occurred at the weekend near Lockhart, a town about 50km south of Austin, the Texas capital.

The Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office said 16 people were believed to have been aboard the balloon and that there were no survivors.

The Texas Department of Public Safety also confirmed that 16 people were dead.

Emergency staff in Texas said the basket portion of the hot-air balloon, which carries the passenger and crew, had caught fire.

Aerial television footage from the aftermath of the accident showed remnants of the red, white and blue balloon, adorned with a large, yellow smiley face wearing sunglasses, lying flattened at the crash site.

The National Transportation Safety Board offered no details on what may have caused the accident, which occurred on a clear day.

But a spokesman at the scene said teams from that agency and the Federal Bureau of

Investigation were being dispatched to help in evidence gathering.

The spokesman said the balloon probably belonged to a tour group that offers rides to paying passengers.

Margaret Wylie, a resident in the area, told reporters she believed that before the balloon crashed, it hit high-power lines, which caused popping sounds like a gun going off.

“It went up like a big fireball,” she told reporters, adding the balloon’s chase crew, which follows the aircraft on the ground to assist with its landing, arrived on the scene after the sheriff’s department.

The crash of the balloon was the deadliest on record in the Western Hemisphere, said Jeff Chatterton, a spokesman for the Balloon Federation of North America.

“There are thousands of balloons that go up every year,” he said. “This is unspeakably tragic but it is rather unique.”

More than 150 commercial hot-air balloon companies operate in North America, he said. More than a dozen police vehicles could be seen on pasture land at the site of the crash.

Harry Potter has cast his last spell, his creator JK Rowling says at the gala opening of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child in London’s West End. Asked at the weekend whether the stage production, and the publication of its script, which is being billed as the eighth in the Harry Potter series, heralds a new phase of stories, Rowling said: “No. No. He goes on a very big journey during these two plays and then, yeah, I think we’re done.

This is the next generation, you know. So, I’m thrilled to see it realised so beautifully but, no, Harry is done now.” Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is a script rather than a narrative novel. The play and book feature a grown-up Potter as an overworked employee of the Ministry of Magic and father of three children who is grappling with his past.

Trump rescued Republican US presidential nominee Donald Trump (below) has been rescued from an elevator that was stuck between the first and second floors of a resort. The Colorado Springs Fire Department said yesterday it was called to rescue about 10 people, including Trump, trapped inside the elevator at The Mining Exchange, A Wyndham Grand Hotel & Spa resort. The department says the firefighters opened the top elevator hatch and lowered a ladder into the elevator. Trump and the others used the ladder to climb out of the elevator to the second floor. The department says no injuries were reported. The Trump campaign confirmed that the incident occurred but did not provide details.

Retro family fun on NSW coast BIG4 Sunshine South West Rocks Holiday Park’s main aim is to bring people together for a dose of old-fashioned family fun and relaxation.

I

t was somewhere between watching the egg and spoon race and human wheelbarrow relay that I realised I hadn’t laughed so hard since I was a kid.

My cheek muscles started to cramp and my eyes were watering – seeing your eight-year-old daughter face plant when her 11-year-old brother drops her in the dirt will do that.

But for all the bells and whistles, Sunshine’s main aim is to bring people together for a dose of old-fashioned family fun and relaxation.

It boasts a family club, rather than just a kids’ club, with activities like the retro races and trivia to get everyone involved.

Park owner Tony Mayne says his vision was to recreate the family holidays of yesteryear with modern touches.

“I think we are starting to look back at simpler times when family came before ambition and assets, and what makes us truly happy,” he says.

“Life is just crazy nowadays, and our purpose is to get you to walk and talk slower by the time

you leave.”

The park has been a labour of love for Tony and his family, who have aimed to make it one of the most family-friendly resorts on NSW’s north coast.

He invested $1 million in launching Shipwreck Island, converting an old fishing trawler into the stunning Golden Rose pirate ship – the centrepiece of the attraction, named after Tony’s young daughter Ella-Rose.

While aimed at under-12s, it’s a jaw-dropping sight for the young at heart as well.

“Shipwreck Island is a huge hit with kids and parents, they play on it all day and moan when they have to go home for dinner,” Tony says.

“There isn’t a day when I can’t hear shrieks and squeals of delight all day coming from Shipwreck Island.”

Tony gets misty-eyed when describing the park’s evolution and its most recent addition.

“I designed and built Shipwreck

Island based on my own longheld childhood fantasies,” he says.

“I started designing it 15 years ago, which involved converting an old, wrecked 50-foot timber fishing trawler into a replica pirate ship, and it gets to me sometimes when I see the reaction in the faces of kids when they see it and are playing on it ... very cool!”

We visited in the recent winter school holidays and kids were still enjoying the waterworks.

There’s heaps to do even in the cooler months, with a huge fire pit a focal point for families to gather around at night, toasting marshmallows and telling tall tales.

Another great reason for a winter visit is the whale watching, with pods of majestic humpbacks and right whales cruising past nearby Trial Bay on their way north.

A resident mob of eastern grey kangaroos roam the park, along with a riot of kookaburras, which

cheekily perch near anyone with food – though the park makes a point of discouraging feeding the wildlife.

Feeding yourself is no problem though, whether it be slapping up a feast of snags on the barbecues or taking in the park’s licensed restaurant – Full Circle Eatery.

We stopped in a couple of times – the bacon and egg rolls are as big as your head and there’s even kids’ milkshakes in half-pint (300ml) bottles.

Sunshine is surrounded by Hat Head National Park and is just 10-minutes walk to the renowned Trial Bay Beach, with six more glorious beaches close by.

It’s close to all the local attractions – including Trial Bay Gaol and Smoky Cape Lighthouse – and is two kilometres from the town centre, which has an array of great food options and a couple of big supermarkets to stock up on supplies.

The park borders a large saltwater lagoon and you can hire canoes to paddle around its tranquil expanse.

Bikes and pedal carts are also available for hire and the town’s cycleways are safe and mainly flat.

Sri Lanka in huge upset Sri Lanka have capped a massive comeback to score a famous 106-run win over Australia in the first Test in Kandy, ending Steve Smith’s 11-match unbeaten streak as captain.

Veteran left-arm spinner Rangana Herath bowled the home side to victory, taking 5-54 in just the second Test triumph for Sri Lanka in 27 matches between the teams.

As dark clouds lurked around Pallekele Stadium towards the end of day five’s second session, Herath bowled Stephen O’Keefe to end Australia’s resistance as they were bowled out for 161.

O’Keefe and Peter Nevill threatened to ruin the party, digging in for the ninth wicket in scoring just four runs off 178 balls, mostly due to the latter

carrying a hamstring injury.

The disappointment for Angelo Mathews’ team was there were so few Sri Lankan fans at the ground, with travelling Australian fans potentially making up the majority of the paltry crowd.

The upset over the No.1-ranked Test side marks a big turnaround for No.7 Sri Lanka, who went into the match with an inexperienced XI – including two debutants – and followed a dismal tour of England, where they were thrashed 2-0.

Aside from Herath’s match figures of 9-103, 21-year-old Kusal Mendis was the hero for the home side when his stunning 176 on day three hauled them back into the game after they were rolled for just 117 in 34.2 overs on Tuesday.

His haul helped Sri Lanka to a second-innings total of 353 and set Australia a target of 268, which was a tall order given the visitors’ recent struggles on subcontinental pitches.

Australia’s poor record of chasing large totals in the region is stark – in 14 attempts their only successful Test run chase above 200 was when they made 307 against Bangladesh in 2006 in Dhaka.

That’s not to take anything away from Sri Lanka’s well-balanced slow-bowling attack led by 38-year-old Herath and complemented by exciting left-arm wrist spinner Lakshan Sandakan, who took match figures of 7-107 on debut, and right-arm offie Dilruwan Perera.

Smith was out just before

lunch for 55 when he was lbw to Herath to just about end any hopes of an Australian victory after they had resumed in the morning at 3-83.

Smith was given caught behind not long after he had become the first Australian to score a halfcentury in the match, but was reprieved on review.

However, the captain soon after played down the wrong line to a Herath delivery and was trapped in front lbw.

Mitch Marsh hit some powerful drives in his 25 but was also lbw to Herath.

The 71-Test veteran also accounted for Adam Voges (12) in a bizarre caught-and-bowled that at first looked like a bump ball but was shown to be a fair catch by the TV match official.- Reuters

A record 253-run sixth-wicket partnership between Ross Taylor and B-J Watling and three wickets in six balls from Trent Boult has New Zealand poised to win the opening test against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo.

Taylor scored 173 not out and Watling made 107 in the visitors’ 576 for six declared, their highest total against the hosts.

Zimbabwe were 121 for five in response at stumps on the third day, still needing 291 runs to make New Zealand bat again.

The loss of nightwatchman Ish Sodhi to Michael Chinouya for 11 brought Taylor and Watling together for the highest stand in tests between the countries.

Taylor also regained sole grip of the second-most test centuries title from captain Kane Williamson.

Taylor has 14, Martin Crowe leads with 17.

Watling reached his sixth test century.

Both employed the square cut and pull with authority, and otherwise played Sudoku-like innings plugging the gaps as New Zealand exerted their dominance.

They were parted five overs after the tea break when Watling pulled a short delivery to deep square-leg. The dismissal led Williamson to declare with a lead of 412.

Curiously, and in contrast to the Brendon McCullum captaincy era, there were no sixes in the New Zealand innings.

Boult’s wickets in the second and fourth overs had Zimbabwe 17 for four. An unbeaten 49 from Craig Ervine helped them recover.

“Kane told us to just be positive and bat with intent,” Taylor said.

“You still have to respect the bowlers. We could have batted on longer but it was a good sign to declare when he did.”

Tim Southee had Hamilton Masakadza caught at slip in the first over before Boult bowled Brian Chari in his first over, then dismissed Chamu Chibhabha and Prince Masvaure with consecutive deliveries in his second. - NZME

New-look Heartland squad

Lions maul Highlanders

The 2016 Mid Canterbury Heartland squad was announced after the Watters Cup final on Saturday.

Only eleven players will return from last year’s group that progressed to the Meads Cup semifinal before falling short against Wanganui.

Co-coaches Craig Dunlea and James Jowsey said a selection of youth and experience was the aim with one eye on the representative side’s future.

“It is quite a different squad, but it’s very good and we’re very happy with it,” said Dunlea.

“I think we’ve got five players

that are still Colts eligible, so it will be great to give them a taste of Heartland footy.”

With 27 selected, there is still another addition to be made ahead of Mid Canterbury’s first pre-season hit out against West Coast on August 13.

“There’s still one to be added and we’re looking at a couple of options at the moment,” he said.

“It will be a back of some sort, whether it be a 10 or a utility, we’re not sure yet.”

Mid Canterbury will kick off their Heartland Championship campaign against North Otago at the Ashburton Showgrounds on August 27.

Southern makes it a senior B clean sweep

The Southern men have retained the Senior B cup following a convincing 39-11 victory over Mt Somers at the Ashbur-

ton Showgrounds on Saturday.

It’s been another clean sweep for the Southern B side after retaining the Michael Duff Memorial Trophy and the Centennial Mug.

The defending champions lost just once in 14 outings of roundrobin rugby before taking out their Senior B final in convincing fashion.

Fellow finalist Mt Somers

have also had an impressive 2016 season, placing second in both the Michael Duff Memorial Trophy and the Centennial Mug en route to Saturday’s big final.

The Highlanders’ hopes of defending their Super Rugby title have been crushed on the Ellis Park anvil.

Instead, it will be the Lions who have to travel across the Indian Ocean to play the Hurricanes in the final, after downing the Southerners 42-30 The victor of the competition showpiece in Wellington next Saturday between the two top-seeded sides will win their maiden title and the Hurricanes will be heavily favoured to go all the way.

Like their quarter-final and semi-final opponents the Sharks and Chiefs, respectively, the Lions will the third team in three weeks to travel from South Africa for a knockout match against the Hurricanes.

Johan Ackermann has forged this Lions team into an excellent side, but it’s difficult to see the Canes, beaten finalists at home last year, contriving to lose this one.

The effects of the Highlanders’ recent jet-setting were clear to see in Johannesburg this morning.

They lacked energy and accuracy, the Lions cutting them to pieces; orchestrated by the vision of first-five Elton Jantjies, who was outstanding and in tears after the match, plus a pack which won the collisions and put enormous pressure on the visitors’ scrum.

The two Smiths, Aaron and Ben, battled to get the Highlanders over the gainline, but they were hampered by the first-half injury to wing Patrick Osborne.

With only two backs on the reserves bench, the loss of their strike weapon was a big one.

The Lions loose trio, led by skipper Jaco Kriel in the absence of Warren Whiteley, dominated their opposites.

New All Black Elliot Dixon, one the heroes for the Highlanders in last year’s final at the Cake Tin, dropped the ball over the line in the first half after Waisake Naholo and Malakai Fekitoa fashioned something out of nothing, a mistake typical of the Highlanders’ performance.

It meant the Lions took a 17-6 halftime lead, and while the Highlanders are as good as anyone in this competition at chasing a match, this was a bridge too far following their gruelling schedule in recent weeks which has seen them travel from South Africa to Argentina to New Zealand, Australia and back to South Africa again.

“They fully deserved the win,” Ben Smith said. “The kind of rugby they’ve been playing has been unreal. We wish them all the best for the final, it’s going to be an unreal final.

In brief Loss for College Ashburton College’s 1st XV fell to 51-14 loss to Christ’s College in their UC Championship clash in Christchurch on Saturday. College were 29-6 down at halftime and the division leaders didn’t let up in the second stanza. It was always going to be a tough test for Dave McCrea’s side against a Christ’s team that has lost just once this season. College will face fellow UC Championship strugglers Roncalli next Saturday.

Barrett’s X-factor There’s nothing quite like x-factor to get the job done. And there’s no one with x-factor like Beauden Barrett and Ardie Savea. These two were a magical double act who took it in turns to pull off the impossible and pile on the misery for the Chiefs on Saturday. There was no limit to what they were able to do – score tries, save tries, make tries and dig into their respective bag of tricks every few minutes to do something that mattered. Long renowned as the best replacement in test rugby, Barrett may now, in fact, be the most influential player in all rugby.

Cup final a thriller

The Watters Cup will be shared

by Rakaia and Southern following a 26-26 stalemate in the competition’s 90th final on Saturday.

The finalists certainly entertained in front of a good crowd at the Ashburton Showgrounds, even if the outcome wasn’t what either side would have hoped for.

Defending champions Rakaia drew first blood through prop Luke Leasoki with an unconverted try inside five minutes, before Richard Fridd put Southern’s first points on the board from a penalty.

But Rakaia added their second try soon after as second five Nete Caucau found centre Maleli Sau, who crossed over unchallenged for a 14-2 lead.

Southern put the pressure on from the kick off and looked to utilise their rolling maul; which had been devastatingly effective on their journey to final.

To Rakaia’s credit, they diffused what could have been a troubling spell – something they failed to do when the two sides last met.

Southern’s persistence was rewarded after 25 minutes, though.

Camped on Rakaia’s line for a

prolonged period, hooker Angus McKenzie eventually bundled over for his side’s first try of the afternoon and Fridd added the extras as Southern narrowed the deficit to four points.

Rakaia were then reduced to 14 as referee Kevin Opele sent first five Andrew Letham to the sin- bin for a reckless tackle on fellow 10 Fridd, before flanker Isaiah Renata joined his captain less than a minute later for a spear tackle.

Things soon went from bad to worse for Rakaia as loose forward Jon Dampney put Southern ahead for the first time with his side’s second six-pointer of the day.

Fridd was on target with the conversion to extend the challengers’ lead to 18-14 on the half hour mark.

Undeterred, a depleted Rakaia were quickly back on the attack, and what came next could have been the try the season – let alone the final.

Caucau set off on a mazy run before delivering the slickest of offloads to fellow Fijian Sau, who released thundering wing Seta Koroitamana to charge over between the posts from 30 metres.

But, to the dismay of the Rakaia

faithful, the try was ruled out due to a knock-on in the buildup and Southern headed to the sheds with a four point lead.

Southern came out firing in the second 40 and took just three minutes to cross the white line through stalwart halfback Will McKenzie, and Fridd was again on target from his conversion.

Southern were in a commanding position at 26-14, but Rakaia began to dominate possession and soon cut Michael Ellis’ side’s lead again as full back Timoci Nabeke touched down.

Letham steered his conversion wide, but the tide was turning in Rakaia’s favour.

With just a six-point difference and 15 minutes to play, the Rakaia supporters could have been forgiven for dreaming of a fourth successive cup win, and skipper Letham had certainly read the script.

The first five put the hammer down from half way and had just enough gas left in the tank to fend off Southern wing Ryan Williams and dive over in the corner for an outstanding individual try.

With proceedings levelled at 26-26, Rakaia wing Koroitamana took on kicking duties but his effort fell wide.

The action didn’t end there, though.

Caucau became the third Rakaia player to be sent to the bin with four minutes remaining for slowing down play before Southern captain Eric Duff joined him for the deliberate knock down of a pass.

Southern spent the last ten minutes hammering the Rakaia line, but resolute defence held out every attack.

An easy two points from a penalty was passed over in favour of a kick to touch in search of a match-winning try, but again Southern couldn’t quite get their rolling maul working effectively.

True to form, the enthralling contest’s outcome came down to its last act.

Fridd let fly from a drop-kick in the dying seconds, but his effort curled agonisingly wide of the post before the devastated first five fell to the floor in a heap and Opele called time on the thrilling encounter.

Hurricanes skipper Dane Coles will be given until moments before the Super Rugby grand final against the Lions to prove his fitness. Coles suffered a rib injury during his side’s 41-0 quarter-final mauling of the Sharks and was unable to recover in time for Saturday’s 25-9 semi-final win over the Chiefs.

Head coach Chris Boyd was keeping his fingers crossed for Coles. “I’m not a medical man but they say that with these things, when you’re ready, you play,” Boyd said.

Shield stays in Hamilton Waikato have retained the Ranfurly Shield, and given their coaching staff plenty to ponder in the process.

A 55-0 victory over King Country at a muddy Bedford Park in Matamata was as efficient as expected, and promoted the region’s young talent. In what was realistically a pre-season friendly artificially elevated by the presence of the Shield, Waikato battled through some woeful conditions to seal the eight tries to nil win. One day, a Heartland province will pull off a stunning upset, creating the tantalisingly bizarre prospect of the Shield bouncing around the grassroots of New Zealand rugby for a season.

Lucky break for TJ The Hurricanes are poised to win their first Super Rugby title, but they and influential playmaker TJ Perenara might be breathing a sigh of relief the halfback wasn’t cited for foul play during their 25-9 semi-final victory over the Chiefs.

If so, Perenara might have missed next Saturday’s final. Cane, charging through a ruck, brought down Perenara some metres beyond it, and the 24-year-old All Black, captaining his side in the absence of the injured Dane Coles, extended both feet, appearing to catch Cane in the face with his sprigs. Cane stayed down clutching his face, but to his credit made nothing of it.

Mid Canterbury United Masters ran out 4-2 winners over Ferrymead in Christchurch on Saturday, despite getting off to a slow start.

Mid Canterbury went 1-0 up inside 15-minutes courtesy of a Ferrymead own goal, but the home side levelled proceedings from the penalty spot for a 1-1 halftime score.

Mid Canterbury played with more urgency in the second

half, though, and took the lead through a well-taken finish from Matt Galbraith.

Ferrymead continued to attack and goalkeeper Phil Collins came to his side’s aid with two fine saves to keep Mid Canterbury’s lead intact.

Shortly after Collins’ heroics between the sticks, Maikel Vallejo (right) gave Mid Canterbury some breathing space with two goals in quick succession.

The forward lashed his first effort from 25-yards to put Mid

Canterbury 3-1 ahead, before keeping his cool one-on-one to neatly chip the goalkeeper and put the game out of Ferrymead’s reach.

Ferrymead did add a consolation goal late on, but Mid Canterbury looked comfortable throughout to take a deserved three points.

Mid Canterbury will play their final league game of the season when they lock horns with Ferrymead again at the Ashburton Showgrounds next Saturday.

Seniors downed Mid Canterbury’s senior men’s football team were downed 3-1 by FC Twenty Falcons in their Pool B cup clash on Saturday. Mid Canterbury were level at 1-1 at halftime thanks to Greg Feutz’s goal, but basic errors were punished in the second half forty-five.

Setback for keeper New Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius is set to miss the first two months of the EPL season after breaking his hand in a friendly with Chelsea. The Germany under-21 international broke his right hand when punching a ball and colliding with his own defender, Dejan Lovren. The 22-year-old was seen as a likely No.1 goalkeeper at Anfield after an off-season transfer from German club Mainz.

Firebirds create netballing history

The door has been opened for Robbie Farah to return to the Wests Tigers line-up after halfback Luke Brooks was ruled out for up to five weeks with a knee injury.

Brooks was diagnosed with a torn posterior cruciate ligament after failing to return to the field after halftime during the Tigers’ NRL win over Parramatta at ANZ Stadium on Saturday night. It could result in NSW hooker Farah returning to top grade just two weeks after being dumped by coach Jason Taylor.

By Vince rugari The Queensland Firebirds have etched their name into the annals of trans-Tasman netball history, holding on for a thrilling sudden-death extra-time win over the NSW Swifts in yesterday’s grand final in Brisbane.

Despite a woeful shooting performance from import shooter Romelda Aiken, the Firebirds prevailed 69-67 after scores were locked at full-time and after two seven-minute periods of added time.

Aiken – who made 63 of her 89 attempts on goal at an uncharacteristic 70 per cent – drained the winning shot under the ring, prompting a huge roar from the sold-out crowd at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre.

It is Queensland’s third grand final win, making them the most successful franchise in the transTasman era which ended yesterday ahead of next year’s launch of an eight-team all-Australian league.

Romelda Aitken shot the winning goal despite a poor game.

They also became the first team to win back-to-back titles, having beaten the Swifts in another thrilling finish at the

same venue last year.

In a further sign of the sport’s surging popularity, a sold-out crowd of 10,312 was on hand

– the biggest-ever for a netball match in Queensland and the third-biggest in trans-Tasman netball history.

But it could have been very different for the Firebirds, who gave the Swifts a foothold into the contest with their inaccurate shooting.

Despite becoming the first player in the history of the trans-Tasman competition to surpass 5000 goals, Aiken was well below her season average accuracy of 87.5 per cent and was seemingly rattled by NSW enforcer Sharni Layton, who kept her in check.

Goal attack Gretel Tippett, who scored the winner in last year’s decider, was kept quiet with 6 of 11 shooting but provided 47 feeds.

NSW’s Caitlyn Thwaites (34 of 41) and Susan Pettitt (30 of 39) were, in comparison, nailing shots from all angles – but after a strong opening quarter, the Swifts never led by more than one goal.

‘Giant cesspit’ awaits Olympic sailors When Olympic sailors compete in Rio the cameras will show a made-for-television scene of sparkling tropical waters and mountains.

Luckily, the billions of viewers won’t catch the revolting stink.

More than nine million people live in Rio and towns around the rest of Guanabara Bay. At best only half the sewage they produce is treated before it pours into the city’s watery heart.

Incredibly, the fact that sailors will compete in a giant cesspit – which Brazilian researchers say contains drug-resistant superbacteria – is not their main worry.

It’s the big, floating stuff capable of snaring or even damaging boats and medal dreams that

keep athletes like Kahena Kunze and her 49er crewmate Martine Grael up at night.

Because garbage collection in greater Rio is no better than the sewage treatment, the bay brims with plastic bags, bottles, discarded furniture and dead animals.

The New York Times published a picture this week of a bloated human body in the bay.

Another body part washed up on Copacabana beach, just outside Guanabara, in June.

“It’s shameful,” Kunze said.

As part of its winning 2009 bid to host the Olympics, Rio promised to treat 80 per cent of the pollution, a task requiring enormous, expensive infrastructure improvements.

Having completely failed to deliver, Rio opted for emergency measures.

A fleet of 12 trash-collecting boats called “eco-barcos” have spent months patrolling the bay, plucking an average of 45 tons of rubbish a month – about one and a half tons daily – from the water, according to officials.

When the races start, the floating garbage collectors will be out in force.

The first lines of defence, though, are so-called eco-barriers. These are nets placed across 17 rivers entering Guanabara – rivers used by millions of people as garbage dumps and open sewers.

neighborhood, there was a soup of plastic, car tires, children’s toys and household appliances including a microwave and a fridge.

“We’ve found dead dogs, rats, cats, everything,” recalled one of the workers on the clean-up, who said he makes only 1400 reais a month ($432) and works nine hour days.

Surveying the scene, Rio’s state secretary for the environment, said eco-barriers are enough to ensure a trouble-free Olympics – or almost.

“Is there a chance we’ll have some problem?” he asked.

“It’s not impossible.

“But I am very optimistic that we can guarantee a fair regatta.”

Lydia set to miss out Lydia Ko’s remarkable run of contention at major tournaments is set to come to an end, with the world number one 13 shots off the pace after three rounds of the Women’s British Open. Ko moved up the leaderboard with a three-under par round of 69 overnight, to be in a share of 27th at three-under for the tournament.

However, the tournament front-runners were even more impressive, with young star Ariya Jutanugarn shooting a stunning six-under 66 to take a two-shot lead at 16-under.

In brief Monbet Horse of the Year Outstanding trotter Monbet has picked up the major prize of the night at the annual Harness Racing Awards. Golden point - at last

The Warriors have stopped their losing run and proved they can win in golden point.

A moment of Shaun Johnson magic sealed a nailbiting 2016 win over Penrith on Saturday, with the halfback skipping through from 20m out with less than 30 seconds to play in the extra-time period.

It’s a big, big result.

Not only did it take the Auckland club back into the top eight – ahead of the Titans on points differential – but it provides some confidence that might have been starting to slip away, after the heart-wrenching defeats against the Sharks, Sea Eagles and Raiders.

Another golden point loss could have been the end, the kind of emotional whack teams don’t recover from.

Instead they would have woken up with a spring in their step and head to the Gold Coast next week full of belief.

“There’s a fair bit of relief there,” admitted coach Andrew McFadden.

“It’s been a challenging month. We needed that little bit of luck, something to go our way to set us off.

“We have had some tough losses of late. You need to get some momentum and that is what winning does.”

The Warriors should have wrapped the game up much earlier, after taking a 16-8 lead midway through the second half before two Josh Mansour tries in the space of seven minutes levelled the match.

The golden-point period was even more nervy than normal.

Kieran Foran: No time frame for return to rugby league.

“It was a handful. I remember getting told the next day by the nurses that it wasn’t enough to kill me but definitely enough to make me crook.

“At the time I was hoping that it was gonna do the job. I’m grateful I’m here today, but I remember waking up the next morning wishing that it had worked.”

Foran says there is no time frame for a return rugby league.

“My priority at the moment is getting myself right,” he said.

“I know there will come a time where I need to earn a living.

“When I get that love and desire back for rugby league, then I will know I will want to play it again.

“At the moment I have no motivation to play it. I wanna get my shoulder right.

Shaun Johnson: Magic play in the last minute

Foran ‘nearly lost hope’ Troubled former Parramatta and Manly star Kieran Foran has admitted he tried to take his own life as personal issues involving his ex-partner got the better of him.

The Kiwi international was granted a release from the beleaguered Eels last week, less than a year after joining the club from Manly on a five-year deal worth $5 million.

In a candid interview with News Corp Australia, Foran revealed that he has walked away from the NRL to focus on getting his life back on track.

He told Eels coach Brad Arthur in December that he was struggling to cope before his life spiralled out of control in April.

“The intent was there,” Foran said.

“I wanted out. About 1.30am I remember driving in my car, thinking in my head what way I was going to kill myself.

“I ended up driving back to my apartment, where I was staying in the city. I had a batch of left-over pills that were painkilling medication.

“I tried to basically overdose.

“I remember the week vividly. I had been struggling, I had a lot going on. Trying to work through my relationship breakdown, with two young kids, with my ex-partner, while juggling football.

“I just wasn’t coping. I could see I was starting to lose hope on life, really.

“I just couldn’t see that light at the end of the tunnel.

“I just remember one late Thursday night it all got too much for me.

“I can’t remember the exact amount (of pills I took).

Sport Back where it began Last month he was targeting an All Blacks jersey but Kevin Locke has now returned to the club where it all began. The former Warriors fullback on Saturday made his first appearance for Northcote since linking with his old side, helping the Tigers to a 14-12 win over Otahuhu in Mt Wellington. Locke began his life in league as a junior at Northcote before in 2008 being signed by the Warriors to kickstart a six-season stint in which he made 88 appearances in the NRL. After Sam Tomkins moved to Mt Smart in 2014, though, Locke’s preferred position of fullback had been filled and he headed offshore.

To draw or not to draw Time for change?

The 26-26 draw in the 90th Watters Cup final on Saturday again brought about discussion of a potential rule change to prevent the cup being shared in the future.

The competition’s no overtime rule has been in place since its inception.

William Watters, who donated the cup, deemed that it must be shared should the final end in a draw.

Watters was president of the Mid Canterbury Rugby Sub-Union and became the inaugural Union president in 1927.
