Apple Watch? Not so much The hype for the Apple Watch is noticeably more subdued than previous products, with 16 Aucklanders and 11 Wellingtonians queuing to buy the watch yesterday morning. Three Noel Leeming stores, two in Auckland and one in Wellington, are stocking the watch, as well as the online Apple store. On Thursday, technology commentator Peter Griffin said that with an entry-level price of $599, the Apple Watch was an expensive product.

“I see it remaining the domain of executives and early adopters for the time being,” Mr Griffin said.

Lambert slams Jackie O Adam Lambert has hit out at Kiss FM’s radio host Jackie O for perpetuating gay stereotypes. The breakfast radio co-host implied that Lambert could pursue a relationship with singer Ricky Martin since the two are single and gay. But Lambert wasn’t amused. “Don’t do that, you’re not allowed to do that,” he told the Kyle and Jackie O show. “That’s so silly ... ‘Oh a gay guy and another gay guy, oh you must date’, come on.” Jackie O tried to defend herself saying, “no there’s more to it than that”. “Is there?” questioned Lambert. Feeling like she needed to explain herself better, Jackie O tried to justify the comments by saying “you’re both in the industry, you both understand each other’s schedule, you’re both hot ... it would work”. “Well that’s very sweet,” Lambert replied insincerely. Guest host Chrissie Swan knew exactly how Lambert felt, comparing the remark to when people say she should date older, fatter men because the two are “similar”. Being a good sport, Lambert stuck around on the radio show to field some questions from listeners, and to lambaste Prime Minster Tony Abbott for not accepting gay marriage.

Khloe still calls Caitlyn Bruce Khloe Kardashian has revealed that she and her sisters still call Caitlyn Jenner by the name of Bruce and that her transition from male to female was hard on the reality TV family. The star, who is in Australia to promote the Kardashian Kids clothes line at Big W, said Jenner did not mind her stepdaughters using the name she had before she made the transition. “Me and my sisters we still call Caitlyn Bruce and we’ve been told that’s completely fine. She’s told us we’re allowed to call her any name we want to,” Kardashian said while on the Network Ten TV show The Project on Thursday night.

Te reo Maori goes heavy metal When someone tells you they’re about to perform a Maori song, you don’t usually expect drums, electric guitar, and head banging. Northland band Alien Weaponry have put a twist on the traditional Maori waiata with what they believe may be the first heavy metal song in te reo Maori – Ruana Te Whenua. “If you think about haka how similar is it to metal? It is really really similar to metal with the intensity and the emphasis on how loud and heavy it is and how much it punches you in the chest,” said 15-year-old drummer Henry de Jong. “The haka was designed to scare off the enemy and we’ve been at some gigs where bands have scared people off,” added his brother – guitarist and vocalist Lewis de Jong, 13. The two brothers are of Ngati Pikiao and Ngati Raukawa descent.

‘We want the Foo Fighters’ How would you go about luring American rock band Foo Fighters to perform in your town? One thousand rockers in Italy decided to practice like mad for a year before descending on the little town of Cesena in central Italy to record a performance of the Foo Fighters’ classic Learn to Fly. A professionally-edited video shows the “Rockin 1000” group of drummers, guitarists and singers performing the 1999 hit song in a field.

The incredible footage looks like it could be from a festival show. After the song, the rockers plead with the band to pay them a visit. “Our call is to ask you, the Foo Fighters, to come and play for us. Come and play in here, give a concert to all of us in Cesena,” says the organiser. Cesena, located north-east of Florence, has a population of less than 100,000.

Police authorised to carry tasers

All frontline police staff in Mid Canterbury and the rest of the country will soon carry tasers.

The new initiative was announced yesterday and was promptly welcomed by the district’s top cop.

Mid/South Canterbury Area Commander Dave Gaskin said it was not a significant change to the status quo but that it would nonetheless enhance safety in difficult situations.

This echoed the position of Police Commissioner Mike Bush, who said the rollout had been carefully considered and would be positive for staff and community safety.

Trained police have had access to tasers since 2010. The change meant they would make their way from a safe in police vehicles – where firearms are also kept – to be carried by police.

“This way they will just have them on their belt, so if they are in a position where all of a sudden they go to an area and a threat develops they’ll have the taser available to them.”

Having tasers more readily available would be a “great advantage” to staff safety and there would be rules around their use, Mr Gaskin said.

if any, cases where they’ve been used when they shouldn’t have been used,” he said.

Tasers served as more of a deterrent than anything else: “Everybody who’s been tasered has been warned before they’ve been tasered,” he said.

“Every tasering is captured on a camera and we can actually view the footage, which is a great evidential requirement for us and it also means that when complaints are made we can actually identify what happened.”

The safety of police officers in the Mid Canterbury and other districts has been put under the microscope in recent months.

An Ashburton officer required stitches after he was assaulted while trying to diffuse a large brawl in the town’s CBD in February.

Earlier this month a motorcycle patrol officer in Counties Manukau was strangled nearly to the point of unconsciousness by an offender who was attempting to escape police pursuit.

According to police figures, 224 New Zealand police officers were injured during serious assaults in the 2013-14 year. A further 1360 were assaulted but not injured over the same period.

According to Police Minister

Michael Woodhouse, tasers have been available to Police during more than 30,000 reported incidents. However in almost 90 per cent of cases they have not been discharged, he said.

“We know frontline officers often find themselves in rapidly

changing situations and it is not always practical to return to their vehicle to retrieve a taser,” he said.

“Having a taser strapped to their hip provides officers with another option to diffuse or deal with violent offenders.”

Killer tourist driver starts serving his prison term

De Malmanche not appealing

By TimoTHy Brown The tourist driver that killed Oamaru 5-year-old Ruby Marris spent his first night behind bars last night after his appeal against imprisonment was dismissed.

Justice David Gendall found no fault with the 18-month jail term handed to Jing Cao (32), of China, earlier this year.

Cao’s driving “bordered on gross recklessness”, Justice Gendall said during the sitting of the High Court at Dunedin yesterday.

“The only fair conclusion one can reach is that the appellant’s culpability was high.”

Cao had travelled more than 1300km, when he crossed the centre line in his rented Ford Ranger on State Highway 1 near Moeraki on February 21, and smashed into the Marris family’s station wagon.

Ruby died at the scene and her parents suffered serious injuries.

The Marris’ two other children, Georgia (9) and Sophie (7), suffered moderate injuries.

Justice Gendall said Judge Kevin Phillips had given “careful consideration”

when sentencing Cao and found the starting point (of 3 years and 3 months jail) and final sentence (of 18 months jail) were appropriate.

He “dismissed the appeal in its entirety”.

Cao was led away from the court by Corrections officers.

He sat silently through the hearing.

Cao was sentenced to 18 months’ jail when he appeared before Judge Kevin Phillips in the Dunedin District Court on June 9, for dangerous driving causing the death of Ruby Marris.

An appeal against the sentence was filed the following day and he remained on bail while the appeal was heard.

In addition to the 18-month jail sentence, Cao was sentenced to nine months’ jail (to be served concurrently) on each count of dangerous driving causing injury to the other four Marris family members as well as Cao’s mother, who was a passenger in his rented vehicle.

He was ordered to pay $27,500 emotional harm reparation to the Marris family and further reparations of $34,390.

A Kiwi jailed for 15 years in Bali after being convicted of smuggling methamphetamine into the country for his online girlfriend will not appeal.

Antony de Malmanche, from Wanganui, was arrested on December 1 last year after he was caught with 1.7kg of methamphetamine in his backpack when he arrived at Denpasar Airport.

He claimed he had been set up as a drug mule - by his girlfriend Jessy who he had met online.

The 53-year-old avoided the death penalty after a trial in Bali earlier this year but was jailed for 15 years.

His lawyers initially said they would appeal the verdict. Prosecutors indicated they would also appeal for a harsher sentence.

But Bali’s district court says it didn’t receive notice by the deadline – from either de Malmanche or the prosecution – and has declared the sentence final, 3 News reported last night.

Mogul’s properties sold off

By Catherine Gaffaney Former party pills mogul Matt Bowden yesterday watched the last of his properties go under the hammer.

Mr Bowden’s family home, where he has been living for two years, sold to an Auckland man at a mortgagee sale for $1,829,000.

The modern four-bedroom property on the rural outskirts of Auckland described by the auctioneer as a fine “prop-ortunity” was sold as liquidators try to recoup at least $1.42 million in debt from his company Stargate Operations, including an $850,000 bill to IRD. The property has a current

valuation of $1,460,000.

Mr Bowden said he was sad to see his home sell but was pleased it had fetched a good price.

“We bought the property because we wanted to live a simple life in the country ... At least it sold at valuation.”

Mr Bowden is known for introducing party pills to New Zealand. He later moved into importing and manufacturing synthetic cannabis. He also makes music under the stage name Starboy.

Mr Bowden told the Herald his intention was to develop safe alternatives to alcohol and other substances.

“I’ve spent nearly 20 years

advocating for quality and evidence-based products.”

The home was bought by an Auckland IT businessman who intends to live in the property with his young family.

Harcourts agent David Savery said he had 240 enquiries about the property – the most he’d had in the past 25 years.

“It was a good result,” he said. “There was about 40 parties involved and eight or nine that partook [in the auction].”

“It sold well above the CV.” Mr Bowden’s North Shore waterfront property at 80 Cliff Road, Torbay recently fetched $1.985 million. Mr Bowden paid $2.55 million for the

3500sq m property in February 2013 and it has a current CV of $2.6 million.

His other property, a fourbedroom 1960s house in Browns Bay, sold recently for $895,000 – $145,000 above its CV. Mr Bowden, who has two young children, was unsure where he’d go next but said he hoped to make psychotherapeutic products, which would improve neural processing and social interaction.

Liquidators said “all tangible assets” of Stargate Operations had been sold and demands had been issued for amounts outstanding.

Players expecting fair play in cup final Rakaia players Nete Caucau and Seti Koroitamana are not expecting any racist flak when they take to the field to contest the Watters Cup today.

The two ex-pat Fijians have played in Mid Canterbury for several years and have always received a good reception from team members, other players and spectators.

“People have always been friendly,” Mr Koroitamana said.

He thinks the racist attack on Christchurch rugby player Sake Aca last weekend are more likely to occur during the anonymity of city settings, where people are less likely to know each other on a personal level.

Mr Aca, who plays wing for Christchurch, left the field in tears after racial abuse from a spectator during the second half of the senior match against Lincoln University at Rugby Park on Sunday.

A group of Lincoln University students have been cited in the incident, which has been referred to the police.

A 74-year-old woman is dead after a two-car crash in Queenstown yesterday. The woman was driving on Frankton-Ladies Mile Highway when her vehicle and another collieded head-on. The 74-yearold was the sole occupant of her vehilce. The driver of the other car is in hospital with moderate injuries. Police crash Investigators attended the site. Inquiries are ongoing.

Run over by tractor A Warkworth man is in a critical condition after being run over by his tractor yesterday. The Auckland Westpac Rescue Helicopter was called to a Warkworth property at 8.37am after an accident was reported. Intensive care flight paramedic Russell Clark said the man was in his 50s and appeared to have been run over by his own tractor. The man was flown by helicopter to Auckland City Hospital with suspected head and chest injuries.

Motorcyclist named Police have named the man who died after he was thrown from his motorcycle on Wanganui Beach on Thursday evening. He was Cherokee Martin, aged 29 of Whanganui. Mr Martin was riding the motorcycle on the beach with friends at around 5pm. Police believe he had struck a log while riding and was thrown off. He was not wearing a helmet at the time.

The man’s friends called emergency services and paramedics attempted to revive him but unfortunately he died at the scene. The death has been referred to the coroner.

They were found in the car park of a shopping centre 300m down the road.

The Ministry of Education has launched an investigation into how the children escaped the centre.

Four people have been handed lengthy jail terms following a million dollar methamphetamine bust in central Wellington last March. The raid on a Chews Lane apartment, just a block from the central city police station, found 1.2 kilograms of the drug. Kevin Chea and Kien Dao were last month found guilty of eight charges including importing, supplying and possessing a Class A drug for supply, and receiving stolen property. In the High Court in Wellington yesterday, they were sentenced to 17 and 15 years in jail respectively, with minimum terms of eight and a half and seven and a half years each. Another man, Michael Debreceny [debraSEE-nee] has been sentenced to nine and a half years jail for importing, while Abby Cummins will serve three and a half years for possessing methamphetamine for supply.

Teen hurt in fall A Waikato teen is in a stable condition after falling off a bolting horse. About 12.40pm yesterday, the Auckland Rescue Helicopter was called to Onewhero and the 16-year-old girl was flown to Auckland City Hospital in a critical condition. Intensive care flight paramedic Bruce Kerr said she had “fallen quite heavily” off the horse.

She required a blood transfusion and the patient was transfused while enroute to Auckland City Hospital.

Farmers sit tight, eye land prices

Fewer dairy farm sales in Mid Canterbury during the first half of the year reflect weakening confidence in the industry as milk prices continue to tumble, according to the latest Rural Value report.

At the latest GlobalDairyTrade (GDT) auction midway through July milk prices dropped by 10.7 per cent.

Rural Value national manager David Peterson expects the decline in farmer income will translate in a reduction in dairy land prices.

Mid Canterbury rural real estate consultant Chris Murdoch agrees, however he thinks the real picture will not become apparent until later in the year.

“The latest price drop has dented confidence, but there’s absolutely no proof of downward land prices.

“Until we get a sale we are not going to know where it sits,” he said.

“Land prices in the Mid and Central Canterbury districts

With the current low dairy prices expected to impact on farm prices, many current and potential dairy farmers are taking a wait and see approach to prices.

Murder charge ruled out due to teen accused’s brain injury By sophie RyaN A teenager found guilty of killing a West Auckland shopkeeper would be serving time for murder had he not suffered a brain injury when he was 8, a High Court judge told him yesterday.

The 14-year-old was found guilty of the manslaughter of Arun Kumar a shopkeeper at the Railside Dairy in Henderson, and was yesterday sentenced to six years imprisonment.

He will be eligible for release before he turns 17.

The teen was cleared of a murder charge, and his 13-year-old co-defendant was cleared of manslaughter for the June 10, 2014, killing.

Yesterday the 14-year-old had his name suppression lifted

by Justice Graham Lang, but an appeal by his lawyer has kept his name hidden from the public.

Mr Kumar’s family did not provide victim impact statements to be read in court and

said through prosector Kieran Raftery that they felt there were no words that could explain their tragedy.

Earlier this week the family said they would not attend the sentencing in a boycott against the justice system they said failed them.

They were particularly distressed by the defence counsel’s position that the 14-yearold had been acting in defence of Mr Kumar, who had armed himself with a pole after the two teens entered the dairy.

In sentencing, Justice Lang said he was not satisfied by the defence’s claim the teen was acting in self-defence.

Mr Kumar was acting “completely defensively”, he said, and was “in a vulnerable situation” when confronted by the 14-year-old with a knife.

The teenager’s early-life and upbringing that was “turbulent in the extreme” was the underlying factor to his actions in the Railside Dairy, Justice Lang said.

The 14-year-old suffered a

“serious traumatic brain injury” when he was struck by a vehicle at age 8.

His mother drank alcohol heavily and took drugs during her pregnancy, Justice Lang said, and the 14-year-old had symptoms of Foetal Alcohol Syndrome.

He was addicted to synthetic cannabis at the time of the attack on Mr Kumar, and was living in a house that was used by drug-takers.

Justice Lang said an expert had told the court the teenager’s brain injury made him “extremely vulnerable to complex factual situations”.

The teenager’s lawyer Maria Pecotic said Justice Lang should not compare his case to that of Bailey Kurariki, who was sentenced to seven years imprisonment for the manslaughter of pizza delivery worker Michael Choy because of the elements of pre-meditation and the number of other offenders involved.

Justice Lang agreed. He said there was little assistance the

case could give to his sentencing yesterday.

He put his starting point for sentencing at seven and a half years in prison.

He took into account the teen’s youth, he said, but would only place light weight on the teenager’s brain injury, saying that discount had already been given by the jury.

“I have no doubt you would have been convicted of murder [otherwise],” he said.

He settled on a sentence of six years imprisonment with a minimum non-parole period of three years and three months.

The Crown were seeking a starting point of 10 years imprisonment for the teenager.

Justice Lang said the family of Mr Kumar were “forced to relive their family member’s final moments” throughout the trial.

“They will never be able to replace Mr Kumar. They will never be able to live their lives as they were [before his death].”

“I’ve got a couple of places that are probably going to come on the market, they are not for sale at this point, but people are watching where this is heading and deciding whether to take their money out,” he said.

“Until there is some recovery in dairy prices we are not going to see too much action.”

Mr Murdoch was confident banks would continue to support dairy farmers through the tight times ahead.

Canterbury consultant to Rural Value Ian Bunt said there were rumours of some purchasers attempting to back away from agreements signed at 2014/early 2015 levels.

“Potential buyers are now opting to sit and wait for several months – or at least until the first distressed sales occur before committing to a purchase,” Mr Bunt said.

Batteries removed from smoke alarms A chimney fire attended in Westport on Thursday night has highlighted the danger of people taking batteries out of smoke alarms to be used in other gadgets.

Westport Volunteer Fire Brigade fire chief Alan Kennedy said they were called to a Mill Street house at 9.10pm after a passing police patrol noted the occupant outside and in difficulty.

The chimney was emitting the usual sparks and flames from an unclean chimney and was relatively straightforward to contain.

Mr Kennedy said the smokefilled house had plenty of smoke alarms but “typically” the batteries had been robbed and used for other things.

He said the brigade encountered the scenario all too frequently.

Often it was because families with small children who had a plethora of battery operated toys removed the smoke alarm batteries for a quick fix.

“You don’t have to be a rocket scientist when you see the toys about the place,” he said.

Sharing the secrets to a long life

Gardening, hard work, and growing your own veges – all secrets to a long life, according to some of Ashburton’s oldest residents.

Figures released by Statistics New Zealand show Mid Cantabrians are living longer than they were just a few years ago.

Over the 2005-07 period, the average life expectancy for men in the Ashburton District was between 77.9 and 79.4 years, while for women it was between 81.7 and 83.1 years.

That has risen slightly over the 2012-14 period, with men living, on average, to between 78.6 and 80 years old.

Women continue to out-live their male counterparts, with an average life expectancy of between 82.7 and 84.1 years.

For Ashburton couple Hilda and James Murdoch, both 95, eating lots of fresh vegetables, playing bowls, and working in the garden helped to keep them healthy.

The couple have been married for an impressive 73 years and spent most of their lives in Palmerston before making the move north to be closer to their daughter.

They now reside at Coldstream Rest Home, Hospital, and Retirement Village.

While Hilda says their healthy lifestyle is the secret to their longevity, she says younger generations don’t share the same values.

Part of the problem was the accessibility of fast food, she said.

For fellow Coldstream resident Joan Jones, making it to the age of 99 is about healthy eating, exercise, and not drinking alcohol.

Pye tied at 63rd position Mid Canterbury agribusiness entrepreneur Alan Pye has again been confirmed among the ranks of New Zealand’s wealthiest people in the National Business Review’s Rich List.

The publication estimates Mr Pye’s wealth at $200 million, about the same as it was when he appeared on the list last year.

It ranks him 63rd richest with Wellington businessman John Holdsworth.

Mr Pye sold his 25 per cent stake in Dairy Holdings, the mega dairy farm-owning company he started up in 2000, last year.

The NBR says the sale was worth $100 million.

In June, he confirmed he and business partner David Gartner were selling Coonawarra Fresh Produce, one of the biggest horticultural producers in southern Australia.

Among the company’s assets was more than 900 hectares of

cropping land that was expected to fetch up to $14 million.

Mr Pye continues his association with farms under the Highfield group in Canterbury and he holds other interests with sons Mark and Leighton.

Among them is Zerella Holdings, a growing, packing, processing and wholesaling business that is one of the major producers and suppliers of fresh produce in Australia.

Other rich-listers with Mid Canterbury connections in-

cluded the Turley family, which owns farms in Mid and South Canterbury, with an estimated wealth of $135 million.

The owners of Ashburton’s The Courier newspaper, Dunedin-based brothers Sir Julian and Nick Smith, were ranked 160th with an estimated wealth of $70 million.

Auckland-based packaging magnate Graeme Hart remained the wealthiest person in the country, with an estimated wealth of $9 billion.

Impressive turnout for Big Latch On event

Drinks recalled Fears over possible glass particles in Phoenix soft drinks have triggered a recall of thousands of bottles. About 15,000 bottles were being recalled across the country.

Affected drinks included Phoenix Cola, Lemonade, Light Cola, Orange Fizz and Raspberry Fizz.

Consumers were being asked to return bottles with best before dates between April 13 and July 7 next year. There were no reports of glass particles found in the bottles but consumers were warned not to drink them. No other batches were affected. Better Drinks Company chief executive Craig Cotton said the firm was calling distributors and customers to alert them to the problem and had set up an 0800 number for concerned consumers.

Consumers can return their drinks from the place of purchase for a full refund or call 0800 577 588.

Car flips over A car has flipped and collided with a bank after it lost a wheel near Maungatapu Bridge in Tauranga yesterday. Police and St John responded to a small vehicle which lost a wheel and collided with a bank on State Highway 29. The sole occupant of the car suffered minor cuts and bruises and appeared to have been shaken.

A small section of the left lane was closed off but traffic was not affected. Constable Paul Gunner said the cause of the crash was a mechanical fault and the crash could not have been predicted.

The second-time mum, who played Kasey on the West Auckland-based show, took part in the Big Latch On – an event that saw women around the country “latch on” simultaneously yesterday.

The Women’s Health Network event was a part of World Breastfeeding Week and aimed to normalise breast feeding as part of everyday life.

Ms Whippy, who also played Michelle in Nothing Trivial, joined 38 other mums in “latching on” at a Te Atatu cafe. “I felt like crying when I saw how many people were here,” she said. “I would have been happy with 20 people turning up ... That’s boob power right there.”

Ms Whippy has a six-monthold, Vida Holden, and a sixyear-old, Pearl.

She said she brought Vida to the Big Latch On because there were too many people who didn’t accept breastfeeding.

“There’s still a lot of people that think it’s wrong to breastfeed in a public place,” she said.

“If you have a problem with it, you should be the one that leaves because it’s a human right.

“It shouldn’t even be referred to as ‘feeding in public’, it should just be referred to as ‘breastfeeding’ because that’s what it is.”

The Big Latch on started in New Zealand 10 years ago and now has about 30 countries that take part.

Big demand for West Coast garnets

By Laura MiLLs The clamour for garnets has reached Greymouth, with an American company seeking permits for beaches from near Point Elizabeth south to Camerons.

In recent months, international and New Zealand companies have pegged out beaches and rivers Coastwide, particularly south of Hokitika, for the grain-sized sand minerals.

Industry commentators say it is too early to know if a garnet industry is viable.

However, as more companies

ban the use of silica for abrasives because it can cause silicosis (lung damage), there is a growing demand worldwide for garnets as the only viable alternative. Consequently, the price of garnets has been steadily rising.

Whitesails, which was only registered in January, sent two people from the United States to the West Coast a few months ago, focusing mainly south of Hokitika.

It is connected to the New York-based Barton Group, one of the largest garnet abrasives businesses in the world.

Whitesails has recently ap-

plied for two more prospecting permits – the first from the Greymouth aerodrome south to Camerons, generally on both sides of the highway, including Karoro, South Beach and Paroa. The other extends north from the Cobden tiphead.

The applications are currently being assessed by the Crown agency New Zealand Petroleum and Minerals.

NZ Petroleum and Minerals has received close to 30 applications for permits to prospect or explore for garnets in the Coast’s sands this year.

Labour Party MP Clare Curran has apologised for lifting paragraphs from business magazine The Economist for an issues paper on the Future of Work. Ms Curran, the party’s ICT spokeswoman, admitted yesterday that sections of the issues paper which she was responsible for had not been attributed. “A large number of documents were used during the research for this paper, from many sources over a period of weeks and months,” the Dunedin South MP said in a statement. “These paragraphs should have been cited in the final text. Not guilty pleas A man accused of murdering a Christchurch toddler earlier this month yesterday entered not guilty pleas. But the 22-year-old Christchurch roofer who denies assaulting and killing 15-monthold Ihaka Paora Braxton Stokes on July 3 still has interim name suppression. The man appeared in the High Court at Christchurch yesterday for a pre-trial hearing.

Defence counsel Phil Shamy said the man would enter not guilty pleas. Mr Shamy also asked for interim name suppression to continue. Justice Cameron Mander granted the interim suppression order. Discussion from yesterday’s hearing was suppressed. Ihaka suffered multiple blunt force injuries in the alleged assault.

The man was remanded in custody to October 2. A further hearing on name suppression will be held before then.

Kate White finds teaching people te reo Maori a particularly fulfilling job.

An enduring passion for te reo

A

shburton resident Kate White has been captivated by all things Maori since she was a teenager.

With this week being Maori Language Week, the te reo teacher is keen to celebrate in style.

New Zealand has marked Maori Language Week every year since 1975, but it wasn’t until 1987 that Maori was recognised as an official language. This year’s theme is Whangaihia te reo Maori ki nga matua, which means helping parents to pass te reo on to their children.

With a love for the language, Kate works at Ashburton Borough School as a specialist te reo Maori language teacher for the junior school.

She also runs a Maori club before school on a Tuesday for students, families and teachers.

This week, Kate asked students at the school how they wanted to celebrate Maori Language Week.

the new administration block and had to be paired up with their Maori counterpart, which were spread around the school.

“There were loads of kids out having a great time,” Kate said.

Another of Kate’s roles within the school is to keep an eye on Maori students and offer support.

To keep up with this, she has

made an effort to get to know all students of Maori descent enrolled at the school.

Kate is also secretary of the Hakatere Marae Committee – a position she took up five years ago and holds a te reo class at the marae on Tuesday nights.

But her passion for Maori culture goes back much further.

The 37-year-old said she had been fascinated with all things Maori since she was a teenager in high school in Dunedin.

She wanted to take Maori at school, but her father didn’t think it was the best use of her time.

While Kate has no Maori lineage herself – although she said at times she wished she did – her interest in the culture prevailed.

Kate joined a kapa haka group and in sixth form (Year 12) decided to follow her passion further and completed her School Certificate in Maori.

Kate headed overseas in her final year of school and her love of different cultures evolved. After coming back home and settling down in Dunedin once again, she attended Otago University, studying Maori in her first year before going on to complete a degree in social work.

After further travel, Kate amped up her CV gaining a teaching qualification in Denmark.

In 2009 she arrived in Ashburton and started work at Ashburton Borough School.

“I started as a normal classroom teacher, but the opportunity for a teacher’s study award came up,” she said.

“You apply and, if you get chosen and if the board of trustees is happy, then you take a year off and study.”

Kate won the award and completed a post-graduate bi-lingual immersion teaching

diploma – Hoaka Pounamu – at the University of Canterbury in 2012.

While fluent Maori was a prerequisite, Kate’s ability to speak Danish fluently, a dash of Russian and her a basic grasp of a few other languages resulted in acceptance for the course.

“It was hard – really hard,” she said.

“I was nowhere near fluent [and] it was very challenging, a few tears were shed but I got through.”

Everything was in Maori – from presentations to lectures to essays.

Kate studied hard – even taking up a language course at Te Wananga o Aotearoa – and graduated with distinction.

Her love of the Maori language is something that pushes her to remain focused in her aim to raise the profile of te reo Maori.

Locals to serve on national panel A pair of experienced Ashburton bookkeepers have been selected to help improve education and support for the industry nationwide.

Kim Hamill and Tanya Hulme have just returned from the industry’s annual conference where they joined fellow book-keepers from around the country to learn more about the latest technologies and processes for their industry.

The New Zealand Bookkeepers Association aims to raise the standards of bookkeepers by providing certification and a pathway for ongoing education, as well as support and collaboration.

Members are required to pass an exam to become certified, and this year the association is also developing a Certified Professional Development programme where certified members will be required to complete a range of ongoing education to keep their certification.

Both Tanya and Kim have been selected to serve on the panel to design and implement this programme.

For decades, the tiny Southland town of Tuatapere on the fringe of Fiordland has laid claim to having the best bangers in the land.

The handmade hog casing sausages have been a must-have for any traveller passing through the rural hub on the Southern Scenic Route from Invercargill to Te Anau.

Tuatapere Sausages are even listed in the AA travel guide’s ‘101 Must-Do’s For Kiwis’.

But now, the town – population of 582 – has opened itself up to claims from other Kiwi centres.

Butcher Tony Gillies closed down Tuatapere Sausages a few years ago.

He sold the the famous trademark and secret recipe to nearby Tui Traditional Butchery.

But Tui recently shut its doors and now the town is without a butchery.

“It’s a bit of a blow,” said local councillor George Harpur.

“We still have the title but it’s a bit fictitious at the moment.”

The butchery’s closure is representative of the struggles faced by many rural New Zealand towns, Mr Harpur believed.

Four Square Tuatapere owner Aaron Challis, himself a trained butcher, cur-

rently sells Hellers sausages and Leckies’ saveloys. But he is planning to make his own gourmet sausages in store.

“I think it’s reasonably important to keep the tradition going,” he said.

Hamish Preston, president of Retail Meat New Zealand, which represents and promotes the interests of independent butchers, hopes someone will grasp the baton.

“Tuatapere has long been known for its iconic sausages,” he said.

“It’s a real blow for the town [that] there is currently no one producing sausages locally.

“Retail Meat New Zealand has over 180 members and I’m sure they’ll all agree there is most definitely an opportunity in rural Southland.”

The favourite pub and fish ‘n’ chip shop of Venture Southland’s tourism team leader Warrick Low are still selling Tuatapere sausage stocks.

But they will soon run out.

“It’s concerning to me as a sausage eater,” said Mr Low. Food is fundamental to any tourist’s experience. Southland is well placed to cater for the travellers’ palate, with Bluff oysters, Stewart Island crayfish, Orepuki pies, and until recently, Tuatapere sausages.

“That is now in jeopardy,” Mr Low said.

“It’s upsetting, but we’re hopeful that someone will take it over and we’ll look forward to the barbecue when they come back.”

StarUpon the builtup landscape of Ashburton, there is one small building that is the Ashburton Astronomy Group’s observatory. Members meet there to look out into space and share their knowledge of the vast world of stars, planets and galaxies.

But if you are going there for one of the observatory’s open nights, you will hear the voices of those setting up for the evening. On the night myself and a photographer went along, we followed the voices and when we arrived found other visitors LET of like mind, people excited about THER the hour or two or star gazing which lay ahead.

Group member Alistair Perkins was our host and the first thing he showed us, through his own telescope which he set up outdoors, was Jupiter and its four moons. The largest planet in our solar system appeared as a small bright circle through the lens, and the moons as even smaller dots.

Next was Venus, it was in its crescent phase, appearing as a small, bright sliver.

“When Galileo looked at Venus, it helped him make up his mind that the sun was the centre of the solar system,” Mr Perkins said.

Next we went inside the observatory, where the roof had been winched back, to look at the moon through E one of the facility’s interior telescopes.

The Milky Way, which stretches above us, we learned on this night, is a mixture of stars of various colours and shades of brightness, and planets. Even neighbouring galaxies can be seen if you know where to look, and three can be viewed with the naked eye.

Mr Perkins trained the telescope on the M104, or sombrero, galaxy. It gets its colloquial name from its shape and appeared as a haze of stars with a couple of brighter stars within it. It didn’t look too extraordinary, although one could not help but have a sense of wonder upon being told it is 30 million light years away.

Among the most beautiful things we saw on the night were a range of star clusters. These included Kappa Crucis, or the jewel box. A mere 8000 light years away, its stars looked like encrusted jewels, themselves loosely forming the shape of a small star.

“That truly is beautiful, it really is,” said one of the attendees, Peter Foote, as he looked through the telescope.

His comments echoed the sense of wonderment and fascination many will have shared in this small building over the years.

The night skies are there above us every evening when we close our eyes to go to sleep, but when you get a chance to really gaze into them and consider their detail, they hint of a reality greater than our own, of a vast and com-

plex universe of which mankind is just one small part.

Mr Perkins said he first became interested in astronomy while walking along Wakanui Beach around Christmas time at the age of 14 and viewing the bright moon above, with an awareness that at that time three astronauts were orbiting around it. It was the Apollo 8 mission in 1968, the first manned spacecraft to orbit the moon and return safely to earth. Its three astronauts were the first humans to see the earth as a whole planet and to directly see the far side of the moon, and then the first to witness the earth rise.

Mr Perkins remembers the associated news item just like he heard it yesterday and recalls listening as the astronauts read a passage out of Genesis in the Bible as the earth rose above the lunar surface.

“It was fascinating to think here they were reading one of the most ancient writings while they were orbiting the moon,” Mr Perkins said.

He went along to the inaugural meeting of the astronomy group in 1970. The observatory was

built in the early 1970s and the group is still going strong today, although it has reduced in size over the years and members are hoping to attract new recruits.

Call for registration plates

BY DAMIAN GEORGE A concerned police officer has called for mobility scooters to be equipped with registration plates as tension grows between their drivers and pedestrians in Mosgiel.

A meeting was held at the Mosgiel RSA yesterday to address concerns raised by residents about the use of mobility scooters in the area.

Mosgiel community constable Senior Constable Karren Bye said she had been receiving complaints from pedestrians for some time.

She said she would approach the NZ Transport Agency to request registration plates for scooters to help address the problem.

“Part of the problem is identification.

“We get complaints and a lot of the time it’s a random person on a mobility scooter and we have no way of finding them.”

The meeting was attended by more than a dozen Mos-

giel residents, both pedestrians and mobility scooter users, as well as Dunedin City Council community road safety adviser Deborah Palmer, Mobility Scooters Otago owner-operator Tony McCarthy, and Ms Bye. Mr McCarthy said mobility scooters had become bigger and faster and were subsequently more dangerous.

“When they were first designed, they were to get people to the letter box. Now they’re going further and faster.

“The top speed used to be 10 kilometres per hour, but now some of the newer ones can go up to 15 or 18 kilometres.”

Mr McCarthy said some elderly people were given mobility scooters by family and often did not know how to use them properly or were not given a suitable scooter.

The main complaint of pedestrians were of mobility scooter drivers going too fast, not looking, and thinking they had the right of way.

plained of space issues including parked cars and hedges encroaching on to the footpath.

Mr McCarthy was at a loss to comprehend why the problem had become so big.

“I can’t see why pedestrians and people on mobility scooters can’t get along – I just can’t understand it.”

Mosgiel resident and pedestrian Karen Ferguson said it was unacceptable mobility scooter drivers were able to use the vehicles without any testing.

“Drivers that are older have to go through regular testing – then why don’t these people need to be monitored as to their capability?”

There is no warrant of fitness required for mobility scooters or their drivers.

There are 12 offences a mobility scooter driver can commit while using the vehicle and the fines range from $50 to $3000.

Another meeting will be held on August 26 to further address the issue.

Not so Dirty Politics after all That’s the message from police over a blogger accessing Labour Party computer systems to gather financial and membership details.

The country’s most senior detective Rodney Drew yesterday told the Labour Party that “there is no evidence of criminal offending”.

“While the matter may raise privacy and ethical issues, these are not the domain of criminal law.”

It’s almost a year since details of the 2011 intrusion were described by journalist Nicky Hager in the controversial pre-election book Dirty Politics.

Hager wrote how Whaleoil blogger Cameron Slater conspired with a staff member in the Prime Minister’s office, Jason Ede, to access Labour Party information through a hole in its website.

He reported how Ede had avoided being identified by using a “dynamic IP address,” which meant efforts to track him failed.

The details revealed in the book led to a multi-layered complaint by the Labour Party on the website intrusion and other claims made in the book.

The other matters were dismissed by police last year.

The reason, in a letter from Mr Drew, was that the “only evidence being relied on was contents of Mr Hagar’s (sic) book and the entities and persons named did not want to pursue any action”.

The letter from Mr Drew spelled Mr Hager’s name wrong and the name of the Labour Party general secretary Tim Barnett.

Mr Barnett – “Barnnet”, according to police – said the police conclusions were “unbelievable”. He said the party was

considering further action.

He said compared to the effort being put into investigating Slater did not compare to the energy put into investigating Hager.

“I would expect to see a level of energy from the police that was equitable and we certainly haven’t seen that in the treatment of us.”

Two government inquiries into matters raised in Dirty Politics found evidence given by Slater could not be relied on – and that he had overstated his contacts and influence.

Hager is awaiting a High Court judgment on whether he can claim journalistic source protection in relation to the anonymous individual known as Rawshark who claimed to have hacked material from Slater’s computer system.

It followed a complaint by Slater and a police raid on Hager’s house searching for information leading to the hacker’s identity.

Police had previously dismissed a complaint by Matthew Blomfield that Slater had illegally accessed a computer hard drive to get emails and personal information used for blogposts. Blomfield has since taken defamation action against Slater over the posts.

Ongoing fallout from Dirty Politics saw The Standard website recently lay a complaint with police alleging Slater had attempted to hire a hacker to access the left-wing blog.

Slater – who did not wish to comment – has denied any wrongdoing.

Slater said he would be seeking an apology from Andrew Little over the accusations.

In brief ‘US spied on Japan’ The WikiLeaks website published documents yesterday that it says shows the US government spied on Japanese officials and companies. The documents include what appear to be five US National Security Agency reports, four of which are marked top-secret, that reveal internal Japanese discussions on international trade and climate change policy. A notation on one of the top-secret reports on climate change before the 2008 G-8 summit is marked for sharing with Australia, Canada, Great Britain and New Zealand. It’s not clear if it was actually shared.

WikiLeaks also posted an NSA list of 35 Japanese targets for telephone intercepts including the Japanese Cabinet office, Bank of Japan officials, Finance and Trade Ministry numbers and fossil fuel departments at Mitsubishi and Mitsui. The Japanese government had no immediate response. - AP

Searchers scour beaches After 16 agonising months without answers, loved ones of those on board Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 will likely have to wait at least another day for confirmation that it crashed into the sea, as investigators work to identify the source of a barnacle-encrusted wing part that washed up on a remote Indian Ocean island and searchers scoured the shoreline for more debris.

Though several officials have expressed confidence that the debris found on the French island of Reunion is from a Boeing 777, French authorities are planning to send the piece to southern France for analysis before confirming it came from the missing Malaysian aircraft.

The part could arrive today or tomorrow, according to the Paris prosecutor’s office.

Officials, keenly aware that families of those on board Flight 370 are desperately awaiting word on the fate of their loved ones, hope to have at least some answers within the next day or two.

“The most important part of this whole exercise at the moment is to give some kind of closure to the families,” said Australian Transport Minister Warren Truss, whose country is leading the search for the plane in a desolate stretch of ocean off Australia’s west coast.

Still, given the myriad false leads that have peppered the search, some would prefer certainty to speed.

Jacquita Gomes, whose husband, Patrick, was a flight attendant on the missing plane, is anxious for the results of the

analysis, but wants authorities to ensure they’re conclusive before announcing them.

“It’s going to be a nail-biting weekend but we cannot rush it,” said Gomes, of Kuala Lumpur. “We have been waiting for more than 500 days. The agony continues and I hope there will be answers soon.”

But even if the piece is confirmed to be the first confirmed wreckage from Flight 370, there’s no guarantee investigators can still find the plane’s vital black box recorders or other debris. A multi-national search effort now focused on the southern Indian Ocean has come up empty.

Air safety investigators, including one from Boeing, have identified the component as a “flaperon” from the trailing edge of a Boeing 777 wing, a

US official said.

Flight 370 is the only missing 777.

A French law enforcement helicopter is scouring the waters around Reunion in hopes of spotting more debris, and Malaysian authorities were headed to the island and to Toulouse.

Scanning the beach’s distinctive black volcanic sand and stones yesterday, searcher Philippe Sidam picked up a plastic bottle for laundry detergent.

“This is from Jakarta, Indonesia,” he said, pointing to the writing on the bottle. “This shows how the ocean’s currents bring material all the way from Indonesia and beyond. That explains how the debris from the Malaysian plane could have reached here.”

Revellers dancing and singing through the streets of Jerusalem during the holy city’s annual gay pride parade were left shrieking in pain and panic, as an anti-gay extremist lunged into a group leading the march and stabbed six people, Israeli police and witnesses said. Police said the attacker, Yishai Schlissel, who was arrested at the scene for the attack, had been released from prison just three weeks ago, after serving a sentence for stabbing several people at the parade in 2005. Two of the wounded in the latest attack were in a serious condition, Eli Bin of Israel’s emergency service said.

Cecil’s killer hunted Zimbabwe intends to seek the extradition of an American dentist who killed a lion that was lured out of a national park and shot with a bow and a gun, and the process has already begun, a Cabinet minister said yesterday. Oppah Muchinguri, Zimbabwe’s environment, water and climate minister, told a news conference: “We are appealing to the responsible authorities for his extradition to Zimbabwe so that he be made accountable. There has been an outcry,” Muchinguri said. “Almost 500,000 people are calling for his extradition and we need this support. We want him tried in Zimbabwe because he violated our laws.

Suicide bomber kills 10

Taliban release statement praising new leader

A suicide bomber killed about 10 people at a crowded market early yesterday in a blast that thundered across the northeastern Nigerian city of Maiduguri, witnesses said.

The region has been pummelled by suicide bombings that have killed hundreds carried out by the Boko Haram Islamic extremists since Nigeria elected a new president who promised to root out the extremists. Trader Bukar Shettima said the explosion lifted him off his feet and threw him to the ground.

“Thank God I was not too close,” he said. “But I saw nauseating corpses and battered bodies of humans littering the ground.”

A police bomb expert said the bomber was a man who was in a tricycle taxi that exploded at a taxi rank outside Gamboru wholesale vegetable market.

The Afghan Taliban yesterday praised their new leader, saying he was one of the most “trusted” associates of the late Mullah Mohammad Omar, a statement likely meant to rally followers behind the leadership at a time of a deeply fractured insurgency.

The statement, sent to The Associated Press, said the new leader, Mullah Mohammad Akhtar Mansoor, had also been given the title of “Commander of the Faithful,” conferring on him the supreme status held by Mullah Omar.

Mansoor has been an “active director” of the jihad, or holy war, for some years, it added.

The statement did not give any details of when Mullah Omar died or from what illness.

The Taliban on Thursday confirmed that Mullah Omar died of an illness some time ago and said they elected Mansoor as his successor. The Afghan government announced on Thursday that the reclusive mullah had been dead since April 2013.

The Taliban reacted by pulling out of peace talks that were

scheduled to take place yesterday. The Pakistani government, which was to host the meeting, postponed the negotiations indefinitely.

Afghanistan’s government said it regretted the postponement of the second formal face-to-face meeting with the Taliban. In a statement, the Foreign Affairs Ministry said Afghanistan “as always, is committed to the peace negotiations with the Afghan Taliban movement and hopes that the aforementioned meeting will be held in the near future.”

While the future of the peace process, which is a priority for Afghan President Ashraf Ghani, is uncertain, the ministry added that “Afghanistan believes that in the current situation, peace negotiations are (more) possible than any time before.”

The new leader of the Taliban is seen as close to Pakistan, which is believed to have sheltered and supported the insurgents through the war, now in its 14th year. This may put him in a position to revive the peace talks.

Last shot at the title

By Dana Johannsen Laura Langman remembers well the sickening feeling sitting in the team debrief the morning after the Silver Ferns’ heartbreaking one-goal loss to Australia in the 2011 World Cup final.

Looking around at the shattered faces in that room, Langman was struck with the sad realisation that for some of the team’s long-serving stars that had been their last chance at a world title.

The veteran midcourter is determined she won’t be departing Sydney with the same uncomfortable feeling at the pit of her stomach.

“That was really gut-wrenching for me, looking around and thinking that we hadn’t done the job for some amazing netballers like Temepara George and Irene van Dyk and not being able to share a World Cup win with them.

“And I think there’s a lot of girls in this group that have given so much time and energy to netball and the Silver Ferns.

“So it’s time to get the job done,” said Langman.

Langman, who has 119 tests to her name, can include herself in that group.

She is one of what was considered at the time a golden generation of netballers after leading the New Zealand under-21 side to a surprise victory at the 2005 World Youth Cup in Fort Lauderdale, about 40 km north of Miami.

That team also included the

likes of Casey Kopua and Maria Tutaia who, along with Langman, made their senior international debuts later that same year, going on to form the three pillars in the Silver Ferns lineup over the past decade.

Along the way many others from that 2005 side have joined them, with 10 of the 12-strong squad having played for the Ferns at some point in time.

Now, just five remain for this year’s World Cup - Katrina Grant and Grace Rasmussen being the other two.

For many of them, Sydney will be their last shot at winning a world title at senior level.

It is this realisation that has driven the Ferns to adopt the mantra “one shot” for this year’s World Cup campaign.

“Obviously that certainty about being around for another four years isn’t quite there like it was.

“I think too, we have been to a number now where it’s time to draw a line in the sand and say ‘this is it, no more learning _ this time we will do the business’,” said Langman.

Given the Ferns’ awful run of results against Australia over the past two seasons, there is not a lot of optimism from outside the camp about the team’s chances in Sydney.

The feeling was much the same for the under-21 side heading into the World Youth Cup 10 years ago.

But those that were there in Miami know from experience how far grit, determination, and yes, a dash of luck, can take a

side in the unpredictable tournament environment.

The team had been, in Langman’s words “whopped” by 20-plus goals in many of their outings against their Australian counterparts leading up to the tournament.

The Australians were just too fit, too fast, and too slick for New Zealand. So far, so familiar?

About six months out from the tournament, after a particularly poor round of fitness testing, New Zealand coach Te Aroha Keenan sat the players down and told them she didn’t want a bunch of “half game players”.

Keenan made it plain - if players didn’t get their strength and conditioning up to scratch they could expect another 20-goal hiding to Australia at the World Youth Cup. “I think for me that was a turning point to say ‘right I need to be able to perform at high in-

tensity for 60 minutes’ and that’s kind of shaped my philosophy towards my strength and conditioning from that point in time,” said Langman.

But for all the work they had done in the lead-up there was still a sense that it might not be enough. The way the draw was shaping up, the Kiwis would meet Australia in the semi-finals - the team knew even if they played at their absolute best there was a strong chance they could still go home with bronze.

They were up against it in the semi-final with the Australian line-up including the likes of Julie Corletto, Kim Green and Susan Pratley, all budding stars.

You could say the New Zealand side have Miami’s rainy season to thank for their win.

A power cut at the stadium saw halftime extended from the usual five minutes, as it was in those days, to about 20.

“To be honest our fitness was still a little bit dubious, so I think the timeout was very valuable for us,” laughed Langman.

“We were pretty rapt with ourselves from memory, and we just had a surge and pipped them at the post at the end.”

They didn’t realise it at the time, but the one-goal scoreline was to be just a taste of what was to come over the rest of their careers when it came to trans-Tasman finals.

“It was just like it always seems to be with New Zealand and Australia [finals] - one team is in tears, and the other is absolutely ecstatic by what they’ve done,” said Grant.

Tough times in V8s taking their toll He’s the driver of a highly tuned expensive V8 Supercar but Scott McLaughlin admits his confidence in the reliability of his Volvo S60 is shot.

Like a nervous student hoping their banged-up lemon can make it to their next destination, McLaughlin says he’s sweating on every unexpected noise or smell from his car.

After a golden 2014 when he picked up five race wins in Volvo’s first season in the V8 championship, the New Zealander can’t buy a trick this season.

He appeared to have turned a corner with his first pole position of the season at Townsville only for his car to again break down during the race. It was McLaughlin’s fifth DNF for the year and, despite an impressive display in yesterday’s practice run at Queensland Raceway, the 22-yearold isn’t expecting anything great.

“If it happens, I’ll just keep pushing on with what I’ve got,” he said. “I tell you

what - I’m hearing every noise in the car.

Every smell, I think it’s going to do something.

“Just to get a bit of confidence back, hopefully, we can finish all three races and push hard towards Eastern Creek and the enduros.”

Despite his hardships, McLaughlin says there have been positives to take from his difficult year.

“I’ve learnt in some ways, apart from Garry (Rogers, team owner), I’m the team leader for my guys and you’ve got to keep your head up in these tough times,” he said.

“We had plenty of good days last year.

The bad days are coming and that’s what happens.

“Unfortunately, we’ve just got to deal with it for now but I’m sure we’ll be back there. I haven’t forgotten how to drive and the boys haven’t forgotten how to set me up with a good car.”

swim team members, and any one from the pool’s level five swimming programme upwards, but was also a chance for the club’s young swimmers preparing to head to the national age group championships next

week to put in some final practise.

It was also the first chance to put the new state-of-the-art electronic timing system at the EA Networks Centre stadium into practise.

Warriors ‘still have faith’

By Joseph pearson Konrad Hurrell’s return to the Warriors has been a familiar theme throughout this season.

The Sharks visit Mt Smart today and it’s the first time Hurrell and Anthony Tupou will face each other since Hurrell was suspended for three games in May for raising his knee as Tupou tried to tackle him.

Tupou told Australian media this week he’d moved on from the incident which left him with a broken jaw.

The former Kangaroos test star couldn’t speak for three weeks and he couldn’t eat properly.

The Warriors said they would help Hurrell to change his running style and the 23-year-old centre admitted he still thinks about what happened.

“Obviously I’ve been thinking

about it but I’m just happy that he’s back playing and doing what he loves to do best,” said Hurrell.

“He’s straight back into a top side.

“It’s been good to see him back on the field running. His first game was last week and he’ll be tough to face but I’m looking forward to it.

It’s my first game back in a couple of weeks and I just want to focus on my game.”

Hurrell has played only seven games this season and his return to the NRL this weekend comes as a welcome boost for the Warriors, who’ve struggled to maintain a regular backline all season long.

Injuries to David Fusitua and Shaun Johnson have forced Andrew McFadden to revamp his backline again.

Hurrell’s recovered from his shoulder injury in training a few

weeks ago and he was due to return last weekend but he was cited for a grade one charge in the New South Wales Cup the week before, meaning he was suspended for Manly’s visit to Auckland.

Hurrell revealed his frustrations had got the better of him but he’s now ready to move on and help the Warriors strengthen their position.

“The incident ... obviously wasn’t a good look for myself but I’ve had the week off and now I’m back into it.

“The shoulder’s good.

“When it happened I thought it would be worse but it’s only been a couple of weeks. I’m back and I’m ready to go,” Hurrell said.

“It hasn’t been a great year for me but hopefully we’ll finish the job well and get in the top eight.

“This is now a good chance for

me to finish the year well and we can now put our best foot forward.”

Hurrell was another player who could only watch as the Warriors fell apart last weekend against Manly, but his return will strengthen their right edge and help to compensate for the loss of Shaun Johnson.

oday’s Watters Cup rugby final will either result in a rare hat-trick for Rakaia, or a rare double for Methven.

Just a few short years into their senior rugby comeback, Rakaia will be looking to make it three Watters Cup final wins in a row against Methven, while Methven will be looking to become the first team to win both the Combined Country Cup and the Watters Cup in the same season.

For either team, to

finish off their season by holding the most prestigious prize in Mid Canterbury Rugby aloft is the dream, but to get there they both know they’re going to have to produce their best 80 minutes of rugby this season.

When the sides last met in the round robin, Rakaia didn’t produce its best performance and Methven beat them for the first time since 2012, and the defending champions’ coach Wayne Foxcroft knows his side needs to turn that form around if they’re to win this time.

Recent finals have been every spectator’s dream – close to the dying end.

“We played really positively against Rakaia

last time but the three-week gap is a bit of a worry,” he said.

“But the boys are pretty positive and keen to prove themselves.”

Two finals losses against Rakaia in a row are still very much fresh in the minds of Methven’s players and management and they’re keen to turn the tables and prevent a rare hat-trick of Watters Cup wins.

“If we can get back to how we were playing against Rakaia in the last game, and the latter part of the Combined Cup, I think we can do it,” Palmer said.

Palmer said the last couple of finals had been close, so Methven

would need to be quick off the mark and look to frustrate Rakaia, maintain pressure and turn defence into attack.

They’ll field a side full of experience, which includes Brenton Connell at fullback, returning from injury for the match, and former Tasman Makos player Gary Redmond at seven.

Both sides know they’ve done all the preparation they can, and come 2.45pm today they’ll run out onto the main oval at the Ashburton Showgrounds with just one thing on their mind – winning.

“We are not going back next week to fix it, it will be too late,” Foxcroft said.

College boys tops on the court

Valerie Adams’ pursuit of a fifth world championship shot put title is in doubt, with a decision on whether to press on to Beijing next month expected in the next 72 hours. Double Olympic champion Adams has been battling in her return to the throwing circle this month after a lengthy layoff to recover from double surgery on her right elbow and left shoulder.

In four events, Adams has finished fifth, first - in a lowerkey event in Lucerne - second and, yesterday, fourth at Stockholm in Diamond League meets.

Her manager, Nick Cowan, admitted yesterday that Adams’ involvement in the world championships in Beijing on August 22 is “up for review”.

Mid Canterbury’s top senior men’s basketball team has been found and it’s a team of youngsters from Ashburton College.

The college team took out Wednesday night’s senior men’s basketball title at the EA Networks Centre in a close final against Farmers Corner. College trailed for much of the game, and were down 32-27 at half time before clawing their way back with time almost up to win 59-56.

League fraternity keeps the news boys busy F or most sporting operations, being the PR/ promotional guy is a tough gig; you’re charged with getting your sport on to the back page (or at least the inside pages) on a regular basis, with constant radio bites and hopefully occasionally an appearance on the telly.

Not so tough if that’s your job for rugby league.

Somehow the sport just keeps creating the headlines all by itself, whether it be on the field or off it.

On NRL 360 this week (still the best of all the league shows on TV) I think the first five items were all major stories, and none had anything to do with running with, catching or kicking a ball.

Injuries are always good fodder for the cameras/microphones, as someone goes down in a screaming heap and is recorded for posterity from a

dozen different angles, in-yourtortured-face close-up, and Shaun Johnson last week provided the best sort of drama, scoring a try whilst being summarily dismissed for the rest of the season with a horrendous ankle injury.

A top-eight side losing their playmaker - last year’s Golden Boot winner no less - is the sort of news that can even make the front page, if it’s the New Zealand side in the competition, and it did.

Benji back in Black?

Suddenly a story that had done its dash a few months back, with coach Stephen Kearney and former Kiwi Benji Marshall apparently at irreversible loggerheads, finds new legs, with Benji right back in the frame for touring duty with the Kiwis side, and all due to Johnson’s misfortune.

Perhaps the story about trouble in the camp came from

the same source that insisted Benji was about to defect to Scotland - even though he has no possible connection, no Scottish grandparents hiding in the wardrobe, all just a fabrication from one of those promo guys looking to get his name in print.

Another Kiwi in the headlines, for the wrong reasons, was Jesse Bromwich, but luckily the judiciary saw sense in that one, and a biting charge was rightly thrown out.

Over at Manly there really is trouble in the camp; the news that Geoff Toovey, a longstanding player and coach for the club, and a genuine hero of the sport, is ‘no longer required’ by the powers that be has not gone down well with other club stalwarts, many of whom spent a lot of time on the field with Toovey, who captained the club to a premiership win in 1996.

Blacks dumping someone like Buck Shelford from the team with no warning - oh, wait, yeah that did happen.

Sure the Sea Eagles have had a lean patch this year, but every team goes through that, getting rid of an absolute icon of the club doesn’t quite seem the right way to get everybody onside and doing what’s required to get things back on track.

New coach Trent Barrett is one of the new breed of recent ex-players finding their way to the top of the coaching ranks; I hope he’s ready for the immense pressure he’s going to be under if there’s a few early losses

under his stewardship.

And now Aussie league great Billy Moore, also on NRL 360, claimed the Warriors played a “coconut style” of football.

We know he’s always been a brash, vulgar Aussie loudmouth, but really?

Doesn’t he read the newspapers, or watch the news over there, currently full of stories about racism and Adam Goodes?

It would appear that they just can’t help themselves.

It’s all an ongoing saga that’s bigger than Coro Street, and all grist to the mill for those journos who have gone to the dark side, and those who were clever enough to choose league as their target sport haven’t had to do much digging this year (or last year, or the year before) to find their golden nuggets.

Amathea gone

Carnival ‘never disappoints’ Former top jumps jockey Danny Crozier is looking forward to his favourite week of the year.

“The Grand National meeting is when all the good horses and the good horsemen come out to play,” he said.

“It’s a lot of fun, a great atmosphere and I love it.”

Crozier established himself as a leading rider over fences in New Zealand before he successfully plied his trade in Australia after heading to Melbourne in the late 1990s.

He rode more than 200 winners there, including the South Australia Grand National Steeplechase, before a shoulder injury suffered in a fall at Pakenham in 2011 ended his riding career and he returned home to open his Riccarton stable.

“I didn’t win a National here, I had plenty of placings, so I’d love to win one as a trainer,” Crozier said.

“It won’t be easy though with those North Islanders coming down to try and take our cash.”

Crozier will be represented

by Needastar and Red Magic

in today’s Racecourse Hotel & Motor Lodge Sydenham Hurdles with plans to back both horses up in next Wednesday’s Hospitality NZ Grand National Hurdles.

“As long as they perform and come through the race well they will run in the National,” Crozier said.

“Needastar has got more ring craft than the other fellow and on paper he’s my best, particularly with the way the track is drying out.

“Needastar has done a terrific job and he loves his racing and jumping. He gets some huge weight relief on Saturday as well at only half a kilo above the minimum.”

Daniel Miller will continue his association with Needastar while Michael Mitchell takes the ride on Red Magic.

“They are both terrific blokes and super riders,” Crozier said.

“Daniel will ride Needastar in the National if he wants to stick with him and Michael might stick with Red Magic if he goes a slasher.”

Jonathan Riddell will have his first ride over fences for more than 12 months when he partners Kings Deep in the Racecourse Hotel & Motor Lodge Sydenham Hurdles. Riddell won a host of New Zealand’s major jumping events before he switched his attention to his flat career, a move that has been rewarded with multiple Group One successes, most notably with Jimmy Choux.

Family focus on further National glory The Anderton family has matching sets of Grand National victories, and their Wingatui-based operation will have two strong chances to advance their tallies in both prestige jumping events over the next week.

Both horses will be in action at Riccarton today with High Forty to contest the NZI Koral Steeplechase and Harry Hill will round off his preparation with a run in the Gold Club Premier.

“High Forty is probably better on firmer ground so he’s going to be fine,” Brian Anderton said.

“He’s done a very good job and he’s going into the race with a little bit of improvement in him.”

New Zealand business confidence fell for a second month, to the most pessimistic in six years, led by the agricultural sector and construction companies.

A net 15 per cent of firms were pessimistic in July about the general economy over the year ahead, up from a net 2.3 per cent in June, according to the ANZ Business Outlook survey.

A net 19 per cent expected their own businesses to grow in the next 12 months, down from 23.6 per cent last month.

The New Zealand dollar fell to 65.79 US cents after the survey was released, from 66.08 cents immediately before, on speculation weaker confidence adds to the case for the Reserve Bank to cut interest rates further this year.

Times have changed for police Stu Oldham

he debate now is not whether New Zealand police should be armed, but whether our society has matured enough to accept that officers are not always safe behind a smile and a stab-proof vest.

About 5500 police officers will routinely wear tasers when they are on duty. They will be strapped to their hips and they will be authorised to use them to deal with violent offenders.

Police have had access to tasers since 2010 but they have been carried in locked boxes in patrol cars. Now, the locked boxes will be for the guns also routinely carried in the cars.

So the Police Commissioner’s announcement yesterday is not another step toward arming the police: they are already armed, albeit in a subtle way that protects vulnerable sensibilities.

Now, we must grapple with the vulnerable sensibilities that expect otherwise unarmed police to calm explosive situations with a quick word and a stern look, like they did in the old days.

Even then the quickest-witted copper risked being harmed or killed when responding to a violent incident. Many were hurt back then, when violent crime was more than back-page news.

These days, violent incidents seem commonplace and even the police union, once moderate on arming the police, reckons officers need coercive force in order to better serve and protect.

The statistics say why. Police were assaulted more than 40 times a week during the past decade. Tasers, meanwhile, de-escalated 90 per cent of the incidents in which they are presented.

Civil libertarians will worry that arming police with tasers heralds the end of more than 100 years of policing by consent and that rights may be trammelled where officers make split-second decisions.

Fair enough – we should all expect that taser use will be monitored and controlled – but we must also remember we live in a world where violent offenders make split-second decisions, too.

He confessed that he had asked our sheep dipping contractor to supply extra chemical and if I had not taken control he would have emptied a bucket of it over her head.

He swore that this would be a safe solution, that there was no withholding period in sheep so therefore no risk to my little cherub’s lovely mane of hair.

This is, I’m afraid, nothing new and many of you that are co-habitating with a farmer will empathise.

It’s not that I haven’t appreciated his ideas of “flushing” me when trying to conceive (a practice commonly deployed to nourish ewes prior to mating) and I could see some merit in using pink eye ointment for the tiny terror’s last bout of conjunctivitis. But there is a limit…

I really should have known better after the first visit to his house when a steam bath was escaping the microwave and a mouldy stench pervaded my nostrils. On polite request he opened the door to reveal a pile of soggy jocks that obviously needed to be dried in a hurry.

It can be exhausting keeping up with his practical nouse …

Last week I arrived home to find the vacuum cleaner mysteriously dumped in the middle of the room.

On questioning, the middle child admitted the farmer had been using it to put her hair in a ponytail in my absence that morning and made me faithfully promise with a terrified tremble that I would never let him near her with it again.

I also politely declined the cow manure he uses for the maize – remembering the year when all our washing smelled as if it had been inserted in a cow’s backside.

I walk a tightrope between not hurting the farmer’s feelings, but gently reminding him that we are not all one species with a one-treatment-fits-all philosophy.

As the eldest daughter said with a disgusted air this week.

“I’m not a sheep Dad.” “No,” he said. “But you’re just as wool blind – how about I go and fetch the hand-piece?”
