Bill provides extra layers of protection

A new bill introduced to Parliament this week will add extra layers of protection for the victims of domestic violence, a women’s refuge spokesperson says.

The Family and Whanau Violence Legislation Bill amends the Domestic Violence Act 1995 and other legislation.

The proposed changes will strengthen civil and criminal laws, and support agencies to work together better and intervene earlier to stop abuse and get people the help they need.

“Any changes in this area will be really good,” Mid South Canterbury Women’s Refuge and Family Safety Service manager Dawn Rangi-Smith said.

The proposed reforms include making it easier to get protection orders. Under the current system it can be very difficult for victims’ of psychological abuse to obtain protection orders, Rangi-Smith said.

“It’s easier for women who have been the victims of physical violence because it’s more obvious.”

Rangi-Smith hopes the costs of obtaining a protection order will also be addressed.

With the cut-off point for legal aid currently set at $21,000 a year many victims are disadvantaged.

The bill would also enable others to apply for a protection order on a victim’s behalf, and put in place a wider range of mandatory programmes designed to address the needs of both victims and perpetrators of domestic violence.

“At the moment there are

loopholes which can let offenders off attending programmes, for example they can use work as an excuse, we want the orders will enforced so we can stop the cycle of abuse.”

Offending while subject to a protection order would be treated as an aggravating factor in sentencing if the bill is approved.

Rangi-Smith said the women’s refuge service was disappointed there was no mention of clamping down on those who frequently and deliberately breach protection orders.

“We are surprised the reforms have not addressed that, given the amount of breaches we see that nothing is done about,” she said.

Prioritising the safety of victims in bail decision was another good move, RangiSmith said.

“We’ve come across situations when (the offender) has been bailed back to the victim’s house or to an address just two doors up the road.”

Changes will also be made to the way Parenting Orders are dealt with in the Family Court.

“The court will be told that a Protection Order is in force and if it has been breached – sometimes the court doesn’t get the full message of what’s been happening,” she said.

She congratulated Justice Minister Amy Adams for introducing the bill, which is a key element of the Ministerial Work Programme on Family and Sexual Violence, focused on building an integrated and effective family violence response system.

There are plans to put Ashburton on the sculpture tourist trail by replacing the clock tower with a giant cow.

Rakaia has a giant salmon, Omarama has a merino, Bulls has a bull, Ohakune has a carrot and Paeroa has an oversized L&P bottle – now Ashburton is set to make its mark on the county’s big sculpture tourist trail.

The town’s iconic clock tower is to be replaced with a sculpture depicting a cow.

The bold move recognises the contribution cattle have made to the district, and is in keeping with the Big Salmon sculpture at Rakaia, town planner Kiel de Grass says.

The fibreglass effigy of an upright cow on a pole, which represents the golden days of dairying, will be in place in 12 months’ time, de Grass said.

It will feature a solar-powered clock face, however instead of chiming every 15 minutes the new cow clock will bellow authentically.

The decision to change the clock face of Ashburton was made in response to retailers’ concerns about a slowdown in trade in the CBD. “It will bring a fresh new look to the centre of town, and we anticipate it will attract more tourists into the business district,” de

Grass said. Tenders will be called to design and construct the new clock in the next few weeks.

Meanwhile, the existing clock tower which has marked the passage of time in Ashburton for 40 years will be removed and the Baring Square East gardens revamped.

Plans are afoot to install a herd of life-sized bovine sculptures representing the diverse range of activities common in Mid Canterbury, de Grass said.

“We have considered a skiing cow, a cow on a water biscuit and perhaps a farmer cow, however we are open to suggestions,” he said.

Typhoid outbreak: 10 in hospital Ten people are in hospital in Auckland with typhoid.

The Auckland Regional Public Health Service (ARPHS) has confirmed the outbreak and says it is tracing people who have been in contact with those who have been infected with the disease and “following usual protocols” to stop it spreading further.

Medical Officer of Health Dr David Sinclair said it was unclear how

the outbreak started. “We’re trying to work that out. We’ve got some clues but other things we haven’t sorted out yet, so that will take a little while to sort out yet.

“But in general typhoid is imported. It comes from people returning to New Zealand from the Pacific or from Southeast Asia.”

Shellfish sourced from sewagecontaminated beds have caused earlier outbreaks in New Zealand,

the Ministry of Health website states.

Flies can also spread the bacteria to food, but most large epidemics are caused by faeces contaminating water supplies.

About 20 to 30 people are diagnosed with typhoid every year in New Zealand, so to have an outbreak of 10 infections in such a short period was concerning to officials, Sinclair said.

Lesley and Audrey busy sharing their golden years

When identical twins Audrey Ewing and Lesley Campbell left home more than 65 years ago, they never expected to spend the later years of their lives sharing a home again.

But when their husbands died, the twins decided living alone was no fun and that getting back together would be a great way to spend their golden years.

Today the twins celebrate their 91st birthday and were keeping their fingers crossed they might have the distinction of being New Zealand’s oldest twins. They’re not, that honour goes to a Mosgiel pair who will shortly turn 100.

Audrey and Lesley are the fourth on the oldest twins register.

There’s no real secret to their longevity Audrey said.

“We’re just from pretty good stock. We keep pretty well. The Lord looks after us, without him we wouldn’t be here.”

They might wear hearing aids that Lesley describes as “a flipping nuisance,” but there’s very little that escapes their sharp minds.

The church plays a big role in their lives, but when it comes to religion they take separate paths.

Audrey attends the Independent Baptist Church while Lesley is part of the Salvation Army family.

For many years, with Lesley living in the North Island, the twins kept in touch by phone and letters but when they decided to live together after many years apart

it felt as though those intervening years had disappeared, Lesley said.

“We’re fortunate we get on so well, she bosses me and I boss her and no one takes any notice.”

The sisters attend Park Street day care several times each week and say those outings are a real highlight.

They play Scrabble, are both

avid readers and on sunny days enjoy sitting on an outdoor lounge seat enjoying the gardens they now admit they pay someone else to keep tidy.

While they’re both in rude good health, they no longer drive.

“The last time I drove the family said, ‘you’re not getting in that car again’,” Audrey said.

She has five children, Audrey

none, but today those children are a shared family for the two women.

The pair lived at home with their parents in Dunedin until Audrey married at 30 and Lesley at 42.

They’re children six (Audrey who is 10 minutes older) and seven in a family of eight.

“With our sister Anne, we did everything together. She lives in

Christchurch now and we still do things together,” Audrey said.

When the three girls were young they were often mistaken for triplets.

The pair left school at 12 and worked in their older sister’s cake shop, Audrey baking and Leslie behind the counter. They both went on to train as nurses.

Today, while Audrey and Lesley celebrate their special relationship and know that over the years they were able to play many pranks by swapping identities, they also celebrate being quite different personalities with different strengths.

Audrey’s the kitchen boss doing most of the cooking, while Lesley is happy to be her dining companion.

“We never get annoyed with one another. If there’s something we disagree with we say and that’s it.

Life’s too short to be annoyed with one another,” Audrey said.

Lesley reckons living to a healthy old age has a lot to do with your state of mind.

“Some people when they retire they think they’ve had it, they think they’re old with nothing to live for but if things are tough you just get on and deal with it,” she said.

When they turned 90 Audrey and Lesley had a very large party; what their 91st birthday holds is a secret they’re not privy to.

“The family has something planned and I guess we’ll just find out today,” Audrey said.

Hot pools a tourism game changer

When the rubber stamp was placed on the Methven Hot Pools project, it was a red letter day for tourism in the Ashburton District, says Experience Mid Canterbury boss Bruce Moffat.

He described the pools project as a ‘game changer’ for the district and tipped it as one of the largest tourism attractions in the district, matched only by Mt Hutt Skifield.

“Given the proximity of the pools’ site to Mt Hutt it will help leverage more visitors into the district; imagine after a full day’s skiing on Mt Hutt or a long mountain bike ride soaking up the relaxing vibes in the hot pools and watching the sun set – bliss,” Moffat said.

While the project would be built in Methven, it would have a huge spin-off in terms of financial benefits across the entire district, he said.

“This is gold, it’s about creating a destination attraction for Mid Canterbury. When we talk about Mt Hutt, it’s a destination for winter but we’ve been missing an all-season destination product.”

He described the hot pools project as “all powerful”.

The benefits would come in people spending money on food, retail and accommodation, Moffat said.

“The key now is to get the money raised and to get it built.”

It was important to keep the community involved in the project and this could be done by people signing on as ‘friends of the pools’ and receiving regular updates, he said.

“As an organisation we’ll do whatever we can to support this and once it’s up and running we’ll be marketing it across the globe.”

That marketing will start shortly with plans and concept drawings being taken to tourism

“This is an excellent model and I suggest we sit down with the designers and promoters of this business.”

While the construction timeframe would be driven by the company’s ability to raise funds, Moffat believes the pools should be open for business within two years.

Pantomime set to entertain audiences

It’s a classic Arabian tale featuring pantomime and corny jokes. Add it the age-old theme of good versus evil, and a bit of a love story, and you have a production set to shine.

Mount Hutt College is to stage Sheik, Rattle ’n’ Roll on Sunday April 9 at 2.30pm, and then 7pm on April 10 and 11.

Director Jo Brennan said there was just a seven-week rehearsal period leading up to opening day. But the cast and crew of 70 were working hard and everything was coming together.

“My whole aim is to get kids on the stage who have never been involved before,” she said.

Not only were the theatrical newcomers having a ball, but they were gaining confidence as they went along, Brennan said.

And she had broken with tradition and opened up the show for Year 7s and 8s.

“It’s really nice we have a few juniors and they are growing with their skills. They are so keen and committed,” she said.

Daylight saving comes to end

6293 people who voted in a daylight saving poll conducted by neighbourly.co.nz wanted the period extended by another month, new research has debunked the value of the extra hour of daylight.

Daylight saving is harmful to our health, linked with increased risk of vehicle accidents, stroke and heart attack attributed to sleep deprivation, and contrary to belief, it may actually cost money, private digital media company Bloomberg reports.

The practice of putting the clocks forward an hour began in 1927 and was practised until

1946. Following a hiatus daylight savings re-emerged in 1974 and has occurred every summer since.

Ten years ago the period was extended from 24 to 27 weeks.

From that point the official daylight saving period has run from the last Sunday in September until the first Sunday in April.

Daylight saving was once thought to assist in energy savings and to encourage consumer spending, however using an analysis of credit card data compiled by US bank JPMorgan Chase, Bloomberg discredited that notion.

It found the additional hour

of daylight boosted spending by less than 1 per cent, but when the clock was wound back, spending dropped by 3.5 per cent.

The practice was also believed to translate to energy savings.

Not so, according to Bloomberg.

Yet dozens of studies around the world have found that changing the clocks has either minuscule or non-existent effects on energy use.

But, on the upside of the argument, the changeover serves as a useful reminder to check home smoke alarms, emergency kits and to get that chimney cleaned ahead of winter.

Tourists assaulted Two French tourists have been attacked in Nelson, with one knocked unconscious after being punched repeatedly in the head.

The tourists were standing near their vehicle when two men approached, according to police.

One of the men demanded money from the tourists. He then punched one of the tourists in the head several times and knocked him out. The second tourist was also punched and knocked to the ground. The attackers were found nearby and arrested.

The stage is set, the powder is ready and the teams are geared up and ready for Ashburton’s first Get Coloured Run. Yesterday saw race-packs handed out to teams, with numbers capped at 800 entries but the organisers were still being inundated with requests for tickets.

CanInspire Charitable Trust founder Sarah Clifford said 800 participants was a “pie in the sky” number when they first planned the event, and now there is the possibility too many people will show up.

“Kids under five don’t need a ticket to run so we do not know how many of them there will be there at the event,” she said.

“We have heard of some people saying they will show up and take part anyway but that is something we don’t want as we don’t have enough colour for more than 800 people.

“That would make it not fair on the people who have paid to take part.”

Prisoner fighting for his life after assault

Teachers refine their ‘toolbox’

Mid Canterbury primary and intermediate school teachers have been expanding their teaching toolkit through the help of Sheena Cameron and Louise Dempsey.

The pair gave two talks to more than 140 attendees yesterday, about written and oral learning.

The pair has more than 20 years’ experience working in the industry and have worked together for six years, releasing two books on the topics.

“The main focus is reinforcing the good things the teachers are already doing and then refining and adding to their teaching toolbox for the future,” Dempsey said.

Despite travelling throughout New Zealand and overseas to

places such as Australia to give talks, teaching in the classroom is still very important to the pair.

“We both still teach in the class as we think it is important to do so that we have a grounding for what we are teaching,” Cameron said.

Both agree the biggest change they have seen in the classroom over the years is the increased use of technology.

“Having the ability to share and make use of technology is good, but there are still benefits from handwriting,” said Dempsey.

“We find teachers are really committed to their professional development, coming to courses like this after school and on the weekends, wanting to improve their teaching ability,” Dempsey said.

By Kurt Bayer A prisoner at Christchurch Men’s Prison is fighting for his life after an attack by a fellow inmate.

Police are investigating after the assault on March 24.

Prison staff responded promptly, Corrections say, and the prisoner was taken to hospital for medical treatment.

John Roper, Christchurch Men’s Prison director, said the prisoner is still in hospital in a serious condition “which is being monitored closely”.

The attacker has been identified, Roper said.

“We have a zero tolerance for violence policy, and any violence or assaults against other prisoners or staff is not tolerated in prisons,” he said.

“Any prisoner using such behaviour will be held to account for their actions, including facing criminal charges.”

NZ, SAS reputation NZ saturated in at stake, says Little high humidity ■ NZ WEATHER

The reputation of New Zealand’s highly regarded SAS is at stake and the nation’s international reputation on the line without an inquiry into what happened during Operation Burnham in Afghanistan in 2010, Labour leader Andrew Little says.

He has again called for an independent inquiry into allegations made in the book Hit and Run by war correspondent Jon Stephenson and investigative reporter Nicky Hager that the SAS was involved in the killing of six civilians during the operation.

The NZDF initially denied all claims, saying reports of civilian casualties were unfounded, but have this week admitted civilians may have been killed.

They say NZDF forces never went to the villages referred to in the book, and rejected claims Operation Burnham was a revenge attack for the death of Lieutenant Tim O’Donnell, who was killed in a roadside bomb weeks before the raids.

“There’s everything to be gained from clearing this issue up once and for all. If the Prime Minister fails to order an inquiry, then suspicion will remain and that will only damage the reputation of our fine soldiers and our country.”

waiting for a report written by the chief of the Defence Force before making any decisions about an inquiry, but he’s previously ruled out investigating allegations of war crimes.

On Thursday, United Future leader Peter Dunne speculated perhaps the New Zealand Government didn’t want to expose that the United States was more explicitly involved than previously speculated.

But he said that was just a supposition and there needed to be an inquiry to stop rumours and theories becoming the “new unshakeable truth”.

Mr Dunne said the SAS had built up a highly deserved reputation and reluctance to hold an inquiry was “puzzling”.

“The only thing we know for certain is that something happened, somewhere, sometime.

Beyond that the rest is speculation,” he said on Thursday.

New Zealand First leader Winston Peters and the Green Party have also called for an independent inquiry.

Yesterday many towns and cities across the length and breadth of the country recorded tropical 100 per cent levels of humidity.

At 9.15am humidity in parts of Auckland and Christchurch had reached 98 per cent.

In Wellington and Dunedin where fog has caused major disruption to air travel, humidity levels had reached 100 per cent.

Elsewhere throughout the North Island, towns and cities recorded levels at 90 per cent or greater.

MetService forecaster Peter Little said it was abnormal to have the entire country saturated in high humidity.

“It’s unusual to have the whole country but we have had this northerly flow that’s allowed the moist air from the sub-tropics to push down over the whole country.”

Susie Nordqvist, st Sometimes smalltown girls grow wings and fly. One of those who did is Susie Nordqvist, Westerfield farm girl who has now become one of New Zealand’s widely recognised faces as a television news presenter. She talks about that journey with reporter Sue Newman.

ne hour in the hands of a makeup artist every day, a wardrobe full of designer clothes – for some women that would be a dream life; for Susie Nordqvist it’s simply life.

Today she’s the face of Three’s new afternoon news programme, Newshub Live at 4pm, she’s a media personality in her own right and being recognised on the street is just part of the deal.

She’s also a wife, mother of oneyear-old Arlo and, while by most standards her life is a glamorous one, at heart Susie says, she’s never moved too far from her rural roots.

The Westerfield farm girl dreamed of being an air hostess then decided she didn’t like flying, changed tack and wanted to follow her mum into teaching, but decided patience wasn’t one of her virtues. Eventually she settled on a career in journalism and that’s taken her to the top in the media world.

She doesn’t believe she was ever tipped for fame as a youngster.

“I suppose I’ve come from small beginnings really. There were just 27 kids at Westerfield School and when I went to college (Ashburton College) I was a pretty average student,” she said.

Initially she thought about a career in broadcasting, but found she was too young. Print media was the next choice and the prospect of a course that ran for just one year appealed. That year was spent at Aoraki Polytech.

Susie started down the traditional print media path – a job at the Timaru Herald writing advertising features, followed by a stint at the

Returning home also meant it was time to get serious about work. She secured a job at the New Zealand Herald intending to re-establish herself in print media.

Fate intervened.

“When I was working at the Herald I went down to Christchurch to cover the earthquakes. One of the camera guys asked me to get on screen and tell the story through my eyes. TV saw this and liked it.

They approached me and said ‘come and work for us’.”

That job offer dramatically changed Susie’s life in many ways, not least her sleeping patterns.

She became part of the breakfast show team and that meant getting up at 3am. Initially that was a shock, but it quickly becomes the norm when you’re doing it day after day, she said.

The first time on screen as a television reporter was terrifying, Susie said.

“I was covering a protest outside the High Court and if my legs hadn’t felt like jelly I’d have run a mile. Now I just tell myself I’m chatting to someone in their living room.”

If she’s emotionally affected by a news story she has no hesitation in letting this show, it helps viewers connect and it shows you’re human, she said.

“Stories about kids dying in war zones really get to me. It just makes me want to go home and give my baby a cuddle.”

She might be fresh back from maternity leave, but her break from news was short; she’s been filling in since Arlo was nine weeks old as a reporter and occasional

With the world beckoning, she opted for a short-term contract writing online news for the Press before packing her bags, boarding a plane and going off the media radar for two years.

Those years were profitable ones in terms of life experience and they came with the bonus of meeting her future husband, Graham Wright.

He’s from Northern Ireland and when her visa had expired they headed for New Zealand. Auckland provided Graham with job opportunities and by default that became the couple’s home.

“I love it here, but I have to return to Ashburton occasionally for a quieter pace,” Susie said.

They were married at Terrace Downs five years ago in November – in the snow.

“That wasn’t what we quite expected, but it was magical, beautiful,” she said.

With her maternity leave ending, the offer as presenter for the afternoon news programme was an unexpected windfall, Susie said.

It’s a job that brings the ultimate in challenges – not only does she source, write and edit stories, she works as producer and fronts the show. It’s a job where you need to be the complete package, she said.

“In today’s media environment you need all the skills. It’s good, it keeps me on my toes.”

Doing everything from sourcing stories, writing stories and presenting these on air creates a real sense of ownership, Susie said.

In a job where there’s no such thing as an ordinary day, two constants are makeup and wardrobe.

Makeup means one hour where Susie has to sit and let the experts loose on her face. Wardrobe means choosing from a large range of garments that the design team believe is right for the show.

we rotate through. I’m not fussy, I don’t mind wearing High Street clothes, but if they buy something and I don’t like it I certainly won’t wear it.”

And contrary to the myth that television presenters are required to fit a certain very slim body mould, Susie said there is no pressure to conform. She admits that she’s lucky. Weight has never been an issue.

The 4pm news show is still new (it launched last week) but Susie says she loves its format.

“It’s more-fast paced than 6pm news. It’s bang, bang. We get through a lot of news in the first 10 minutes. Every day is different.

This is always exciting. You don’t

know what a day will bring.”

Television is always a bit of a smoke-and-mirrors business because viewers see only what’s on screen; they have no idea of the work that’s gone on for several hours before screening time, she said.

When the cameras stop rolling Susie heads back to the dressing room, scrubs off her makeup, puts on her street clothes, leaves the office, hops on the bus and heads for home.

As a television presenter, it’s inevitable she’s recognised on the street, but takes that in her stride.

“Sometimes when you’re reporting live on the street, people are taking photos of you, but I’m

probably a bit blind to being recognised. I think people are being super friendly to me when they smile, but it’s lovely that people are watching you on television and that they can see that I’m a real person, not just a news reader.”

She knows she’s lucky. She’s worked hard, had some good breaks and right now has landed a job that meshes well with her lifestyle.

“This job is perfect for where I am in my life now, it’s 9 to 3, Monday to Friday.”

Like many mums, Susie juggles work and motherhood and admits that she couldn’t do what she does without Graham’s support.

“Our house is like a military

operation in the mornings, Arlo goes to daycare and there were definitely tears from both of us on his first day.”

For Arlo, the television mum is all a bit confusing.

“He toddles up to the screen, touches it and smiles. It’s very cute.”

Right now, Susie is not looking too far into the future; she’s happy with life as it is. Yes, she’s keen to travel again, but not with a toddler on board. She’s non-committal about adding to her family, saying she’s simply enjoying the happy mix of work and motherhood that’s hers today.

There’s little time for hobbies and interests outside of her work

and family and weekends are jealously guarded as precious family time.

She practices yoga – occasionally – and while she was once an accomplished singer, that’s been parked for the moment.

Her life today might be a long way from the Westerfield farm and she might present a glamorous face to the world, but underneath Susie says she’s changed very little.

“I’m still the same person from Ashburton.

“Coming home keeps me grounded and I manage to do that a couple of times a year, but not as often as I’d like.”

Right now, however, there’s plenty to be grateful for, she said.

Golden day on the water

Ashburton College has unearthed a new potential rowing star of the future at this week’s Maadi Cup on Lake Karapiro.

A large amount of the pre-regatta talk about the Ashburton crew centred around Veronica Wall, and rightly so as she continued her domination, but few knew much of Mollie Gibson.

But they do now.

The pocket rocket blew her rivals off the water in an enthralling Girls’ Under-16 Single Sculls Final yesterday morning – leaving many amazed at her performance after dropping back a long way at the start of the two kilometre race.

But as every 100 metres passed,

Gibson edged herself back into the race and when she hit the front inside the final 750 metres she was actually drawing away from her rivals to win comfortably.

Gibson had won her heat but placed second in both her semi and quarter-finals and showed she was starting to peak with a great finish on Thursday in her semi-final.

Her victory was the second half of a golden hour for Ashburton College after Veronica Wall and Grace Wilson claimed gold in the Under-18 Girls’ Double Sculls title in emphatic fashion.

and not look back as they cleared away inside the closing stages for an emphatic victory.

Wall then returned to the water late in the day yesterday to claim a third gold medal for Ashburton College when she blitzed her rivals in the Under-17 Single Sculls Final, much to the delight of some very vocal College supporters.

Wall’s run in the single sculls events have been incredible as she has been untouchable across

a varying number of age groups for the past 18 months and tomorrow she will line up to shoot for another when she competes in the Under-18 Girls’ Single Sculls Final.

In other results from yesterday’s racing, Haxby Hefford finished second in the B Final of the Under-17 Boys’ Single Sculls, while Harrison Davies finished sixth in the A Final, giving Ashburton two rowers in the top 10

for New Zealand in the age group.

Wyatt Burrows and Artem Kravchenko finished third in their Under-18 Boys’ Novice Double Sculls B Final.

Hefford and Davies finished third in their B Final for the Under-17 Boys’ Double Sculls and Olivia Gibson and Bobbie Rushton finished sixth in their B Final of the Girls’ Under-18 Novice Double Sculls.

The great day on the water sees Ashburton College currently in second equal with Kings College in the Star Trophy with half of the events remaining. The trophy is awarded to the leading school at the Maadi Cup. They lead the President’s Scull points race however which sees points awarded from sculling events.

Southern enter the fray

Michael Ellis is expecting nothing less than a traditional Southern and Methven clash when the two sides meet at Hinds this afternoon, despite harbouring the usual uncertainties that come with any first game of the season.

After enjoying the bye in last weekend’s opening round, Southern will step out today and open their account against a smarting Methven side who were beaten soundly last weekend by Oxford.

“You expect nothing less than an intense battle when Southern and Methven play each other,” Ellis, who co-coaches Southern, said.

“They’ve definitely, from what

I have heard, improved from last year and they always seem to step up another notch when it comes to playing against us.”

Southern will start their season without a few key personnel, including the experience of Jon Dampney who is recovering from a shoulder operation.

They are also awaiting on some paperwork from the French Rugby Union before they can unleash a new first-five on the scene.

“We have two French guys, who work on a dairy farm, and they are rugby mad.

“They’ve been here about 10 months and one has been cleared to play, but we haven’t got anything in regards to the other yet which is a shame for him.”

James Hastings is likely to

step into the No.10 jersey for the match and square off with Methven’s Davey Maw, who scored all of his side’s points last weekend in their loss.

Methven will welcome back captain James McLeod for his first game at the helm after he was overseas last weekend.

They will also welcome back to the side powerful mid-fielder Fa’aitu Tuamaheola.

A former Methven and Mid Canterbury Heartland player, Tuamaheola is renowned for his big ball-running game and will provide a valuable asset outside of Maw. In another all-Mid Canterbury clash this weekend, Celtic will play host to Hampstead in Section One.

The NSW Waratahs are hoping a touch of razzle dazzle and a splash of brash will unsettle the undefeated Crusaders in tomorrow’s Super Rugby showdown at Allianz Stadium.

Coach Daryl Gibson has turned to sevens convert Cam Clark and untried youngster Mack Mason after Wallabies stars Bernard Foley and Rob Horne were ruled out yesterday. Gibson, who himself won multiple titles with the Crusaders, senses Mason won’t be intimidated.

Netballers return to the indoor arena

BY AMANDA DURRY The EA Networks Centre will once again be a hive of winter sport activity with the 2017 netball season beginning today.

First into the action are the junior grades, which this year includes a new six-a-side competition for Year 5s and 6s, and three senior grades which play on a Saturday.

The social netball competition begins on Wednesday.

The top two grades, Premier 1 and 2, will not start until after Easter, with the six Premier 1 teams taking part in the InterCentre competition come April 20.

Throw in the Year 1-4 competitions starting in Term 2 and a lunchtime FastFive competition, and it makes for a busy time at the EA Networks Centre, which is now in its third season of hosting indoor netball.

Mid Canterbury Netball administrator Aimee Cosgrove said that netball numbers had surged since moving to the inside location.

When Mid Canterbury Netball first played outdoors, there were six social teams.

In 2017, there are 18 social teams and team numbers overall are up by seven for the 2017 season.

“We believe that the indoor courts have contributed to the growth of netball in Mid Canterbury and it has certainly changed the look of netball with evening competitions.

“Team numbers are growing and the wooden, sprung floors are a lot easier on bodies,” she said.

“Our numbers are up across all competitions, we are really pleased with the entries and looking forward to a busy netball season.”

The new Inter-Centre competition for 2017 is a particular highlight and will expose local players to a bigger challenge and hopefully help to strengthen the level of play in Mid Canterbury.

We like this photo for pic of the week because of the sheer focus and determination on her face. A quality, which without doubt, makes her the success story that she is.

Silver Ferns great retires The curtain has lowered on one of the great international netball careers, with former captain Casey Kopua announcing her retirement from the Silver Ferns.

World class defender Kopua, 31, says the time is right to spend time with her young family and focus on domestic netball with Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic.

She leaves the international arena as New Zealand’s most capped captain, having led them in 77 of her 101 tests.

An athletic and fiercely competitive defender, she played goal defence or goal keep at three World Cups and three CommonCasey wealth Games following her test debut in 2005. She won two Games gold medals.

Kopua was handed the captaincy in 2009 and remained at the helm until her final test nearly two years ago.

“It has been an honour and a privilege to wear the black dress,” she said.

“The memories and friends I have made I will always treasure, but this is the right decision for me and my family.

“Leading this young Magic side is very exciting for me – there is so much talent coming through and the sport is in good hands.”

Kopua expects the Silver Ferns to thrive under the leadership of Kopua her captaincy successor Katrina Grant, looking ahead to next year’s Commonwealth Games.

War of words escalating Skullduggery and spying are alive and well in the America’s Cup, and so too, apparently, is a nasty feud between Emirates Team New Zealand and the regatta’s organising authority.

In a statement explaining changes to the rules governing the extremely technical daggerboards that help propel the new generation of wing-sailed, foiling catamarans, the America’s Cup Event Authority took the highly unusual step of informing the world that Team New Zealand damaged two of their daggerboards shortly after they began testing their new boat in Auckland last month.

flaw in repairing damaged daggerboards.

Russell Coutts, a New Zealander who is both chief executive of the event authority and of two-time defending America’s Cup champion Oracle Team USA, posted the statement on his Facebook page.

Coutts has been at odds with Team New Zealand chief executive Grant Dalton in recent years and the Kiwis are believed to have won a case against ACEA before a secret arbitration panel that could result in a multimillion dollar award.

The ACEA statement came a few days after Coutts used his Facebook page to respond to criticism about Oracle Team USA breaking with tradition and being allowed to compete in the challenger trials, even though their spot in the America’s Cup match

“We have been watched very closely by the Oracle SoftBank spies every minute we have been on the water and their vigilance makes me think we built a very good racing machine,” Dalton said in a story on Team New Zealand’s website, about the Kiwis wrapping up training in home waters and shipping the boat to Bermuda for the trials.

SoftBank is a Japanese team that is receiving technical assistance from Oracle Team USA. Spying in the America’s Cup is an age-old tradition. Not so traditional is the event authority publicly commenting on information gained via spying and then offering repair advice.

“It’s a short run to the first corner from the starting point so I’m not sure where we’ll end up, but we won’t be rushing him up from the start,” Newman said.

“He showed at Trentham last time out that he’s still green and didn’t run straight, but if he’s on the rail he’s fine.

“He’s still very much a work in progress, he’s still got some growing up to do both mentally and physically.”

“Obviously, we’re in strong three-yearold company and we’re back to 2000 metres, but he’s very well and he can run on a wet track so he’ll be taking his chance,” Newman said.

A son of the ill-fated Group One performer Gorky Park, Gorbachev’s form hasn’t gone unnoticed by overseas suitors.

“There has been interest in him, but for the moment the owners have put that to one side and they’re happy to be racing him,” Newman said.

Simon Adlam is taking three good chances to Methven tomorrow, but is doing so knowing that anything is possible, both good and bad.

The local horseman will line up Meggy Mogs, Julia Lady and Motu Bettor Be Quick throughout the day at the 12-race meeting and with any luck, there is every conceivable chance that he could be in line for a good day at the office.

“They’ll all need things to go their way, but with a bit of luck, who knows?” he said.

Motu Bettor Be Quick showed last weekend at Motukarara that there’s enough ability in the tank to warrant a maiden victory and everything is headed in the right direction.

The company says it is New Zealand’s third-largest residential aged care provider and sixth-largest retirement village operator. Popular stocks Ryman Healthcare and Metlifecare are bigger than Oceania here.

“Oceania Healthcare has today registered a product disclosure statement to raise $200 million through an initial public offering of ordinary shares in Oceania Healthcare and to seek a listing on the NZX main board and ASX,” the company said.

Henderson wins rights breach case Christchurch developer and banned director Dave Henderson has won a declaration his rights have been breached in a longrunning tussle with the Official Assignee.

Henderson successfully complained to the High Court that his right under the Bill of Rights Act not to be subjected to unreasonable search and seizure had been breached by the Official Assignee.

A judgment by Justice Anne Hinton issued on Thursday confirmed the breach, but declined to award Henderson any damages.

His complaint relates to the convoluted passage of files on Henderson’s computer following his bankruptcy – his second – in November 2010, owing $142m.

The computer had been stranded in the red zone following the Christchurch earthquake, then seized by police, then claimed by a liquidator administering several of Henderson’s companies, before

Methven’s hot pools, gold in-waiting Sue Newman

ethven’s hot pools complex has the ability to change the face of the Ashburton District.

It’s been on the drawing board for about seven years, but this week it scored a massive win, it’s been granted a resource consent, a piece of paper that gives the green light for fundraising to start and building to commence.

Like any big and ambitious project, this one has had its knockers and its doubters. There were those who simply scoffed at the idea of hot pools in Methven, others who said it was clearly too ambitious for any town to consider and a few who simply didn’t want a bar of anything that might change the face of Methven any further.

To its supporters’ credit they refused to be deterred by that negativity. They battled on, overcame setback after setback, fine-tuned their plan to meet the market surveys told them would be there. They did all of this at a huge cost to themselves in terms of both time, money and probably other aspects of their lives.

This week they were rewarded.

With resource consent in hand they can start the hard work of raising capital and the fun part, the planning.

When entrepreneur Doug Hood dreamed big and saw a skifield on Mt Hutt, many said he was mad. Doug ignored them, fired up his bulldozer and carved a track to the top of the mountain. The success of that venture is now history. Its knockers have been silenced and Methven and greater Mid Canterbury continues to reap huge benefits from the winter influx of skiers.

Look at Lake Hood. Its supporters dreamed big and a bare paddock became a massive lake that supports major events and is home to hundreds.

And so it will be with the hot pools. Yes, the knockers will hang around until the business is open and the tourists are flocking to town. Then they’ll go away. What won’t go away will be the benefits those pools will bring to our district.

Look what the hot pools did for Tekapo. That beautiful slice of the Mackenzie now attracts visitors year round thanks to its hot pools. Methven will be no different and we’ll owe a huge debt of gratitude to those who dared to dream.

We regularly receive calls from readers concerned about driver behaviour at this intersection. Many people appear to be unaware of the correct behaviour when two lanes of traffic merge into one and others are worried that the combination of traffic signals and merge lanes is creating increased traffic congestion.

There are already significant lines of traffic building up along State Highway One and readers say the new layout will create an even higher level of chaos if traffic is built up across the railway line.

Schools opening on Saturdays NZ’s future?

chool will be open on Saturdays beginning exactly a year from now. And have a guess who we can blame for this – Aucklanders!

When I first started teaching I worked in Auckland and since leaving I have kept in touch with a colleague, who is now a principal up there.

I won’t name her school as she has pulled away from what’s known quietly as The Sector. It’s kind of like in Harry Potter when the wizards talk about “he who cannot be named”.

The Sector has the official name of Auckland Secondary Schools With Intermediates, Primaries Education Sector. Quite a mouthful, which is why it is shortened to The Sector.

They are a group of right wing thinking principals with National Party links. When government policy writers want to talk to educationalists, they contact The Sector first.

At the end of 2015 Minister Hekia Parata consulted with the wider education community to reform the Education Act. One of the ideas that came forward was from Auckland principals to allow enrolments to take place in groups, or cohorts as we call them. Basically a school could say, we only take enrol-

ments at the start of every term, or only twice a year. It is proposed under this policy, that children as young as four-and-a-half can enrol at school in order to meet cohort enrolment criteria.

They also proposed schools could be flexible when they could be open.

This means a school can set its hours of operation, including weekends. Teachers cannot oppose this as they are paid a salary, which is why they are paid for weekends and holidays.

Changes to the Education Act have been signalled to begin in 2018. It is currently still before various select committees at the moment as submissions have closed.

So how does this lead to Saturday schooling? Simple – money and, more to the point, a principal’s salary. See a principal’s salary is worked out on the number of students at their school.

If you want to earn more, you

take on a bigger school or your school roll increases.

The Sector principals have got together and signed an agreement that they would capture enrolments as early as possible under the proposed changes to the Education Act. They would then open their schools on Saturdays with reduced staffing and offer PE and sports as curriculum. This would draw families in, especially those who worked on weekends or wanted their children given an edge over others in sports.

How do I know this? My colleague in Auckland is still on their email list and has been getting copies of their draft agreement.

She said it would be foolish to ignore what is going to happen on this date a year from now.

This increase in enrolments would lead to a principal getting a pay rise. It will also lead to some unintended negative consequences which is why The Sector have kept this quiet.

According to one of their last emails the following scenarios are likely: Schools not part of The Sector will become disestablished as new parents enrol in Sector schools only. This could become a bitter division between schools and lead to sectarian violence

against Sector schools.

The only way for non-Sector schools to compete is to follow suit and it wouldn’t take long for all schools to be open on Saturdays. The winners would be those who got in first.

Parents would have to choose to pull their children out of weekend activities – sports, jobs etc – if they wanted to have their children attend Saturday schooling.

Now think of what weekend schooling would do here in Mid Canterbury.

I am seriously thinking about the ideas as we have the grounds to run sports and a hall if it is wet.

An increase in salary would mean a motorbike upgrade, so I must admit the idea has merit.

My Auckland colleague is so concerned she is putting together a national petition to oppose these amendments and stop this dead in the water.

Military controversy or just a money-making scheme?

M r N. Hager, the legendary and controversial investigative journalist (IJ), has come up with another coup, not quite Dirty Politics but on the same, well-worn lines.

He and another IJ – John Stephenson – have accused the New Zealand Defence Force of going on a revenge-fuelled rampage in two Afghan villages in August 2010, following the death of one of their own, Lt T. O’Donnell, in an earlier confrontation with Taliban insurgents.

The time chosen for the much-trumpeted launch of this publication was the eve of John Key’s valedictory, final exit from Parliament.

What a remarkable coincidence.

Dirty Politics, I should also remind you, concerned such things as “secret e-mails” supposedly involving National MPs. It also made a well-timed debut during the run-up to the 2014 election, created an instant

“storm”, as intended, though just as speedily, blew itself out.

No doubt, it sold a few copies during that brief period before its inevitable, unmourned demise.

Now, here’s another “sensational”, money-driven volume, the object of which seems to be specifically to denigrate the NZDF, particularly the much-respected SAS and its courageous operatives and, as an add-on, discomfort former PM, John Key, who gave the mission the official go-ahead.

Having already been “acquitted” of any infringement of the rules of war by two high-powered inquiries, the writers of this potboiler

want yet another “full and transparent” investigation of the events that August, seven years ago.

Apart from making money what is it that motivates these two IJs, as they rake over the ashes of battles long ago, battles, moreover, that have been well and truly examined.

A correspondent to a paper near me, Paul Granger, sees it this way: “Nicky Hager needed a payday so he wrote another nothing book about a nothing event and manipulated the media to promote it. Done deal. As always, it was timed for just before an election or an ex-MP’s retirement speech ... The raid by our SAS was backed-up by American Apache helicopters, which even Hager says did the alleged killing ... When will those being played by Hager wake up?”

New Zealand’s top soldier and currently chief of the NZDF, General Keating, in his face-the-media session on Tuesday, went to great lengths to defend the professionalism, integrity and honour of the SAS. It is not the sort of unit that runs on revenge.

PM Bill English seems, more or less, to have ruled out a further inquiry, for which Messrs Hager and Stephenson are calling. I, for one, very much hope he won’t change his mind.

There is absolutely no question of SAS members killing local civilians in cold blood on behalf of Tim O’Donnell; if a civilian was killed on that sad day in 2010 it appears to be the result of a faulty machine gun carried by one of the American, Apache helicopters.

Later news We are now told by Messrs Hager and Stephenson that although the names of the villages where the alleged – by Hager and Stephenson, that is – “war crimes” took place are correct as given in their book, their exact location – also as given in the book – is not as accurate.

Coup de grace? The Prime Minister’s damning comment: “You don’t have an inquiry just because someone’s decided to make allegations to sell a book.”

That jury is still out.

‘Wall of water’ coming Residents of low-lying parts of Logan and the Gold Coast have been told to move to higher ground as a “wall of water” heads towards the region.

The Gold Coast council has told residents near the northern suburbs of Stapylton and Jacobs Well to evacuate, and warned those who remain behind they risk being trapped by floodwaters for several days.

Police Commissioner Ian Stewart said people in the area should get out now.

“Floodwaters are approaching, and they are putting out SMS alerts to people in those areas, asking people to go to higher ground, to evacuate to friends and family,” he said.

“They are urgent alerts and we have asked the community to take them seriously.

Residents in low-lying areas around Beenleigh have also been told to get out as the Albert River continues to rise towards a possible 130-year record level.

The Bureau of Meteorology says the river level was expected to reach around 8.0 metres in the area yesterday afternoon, near the 8.1 metre record level set in 1887.

Watson’s decision came after the Department of Justice argued for a narrower ruling covering only the ban on new visas for people from six Muslim-majority countries. The department urged the judge to allow a freeze on the US refugee programme to go forward.

Government attorney Chad Readler said halting the flow of refugees had no effect on Hawaii and the state has not

Ex-president Park arrested South Korea’s disgraced former President Park Geun-hye was arrested and jailed Friday over high-profile corruption allegations that already ended her tumultuous four-year rule and prompted an election to find her successor.

A convoy of vehicles, including a black sedan carrying Park, entered a detention facility near Seoul after the Seoul Central District Court granted prosecutors’ request to arrest her.

Many Park supporters waved national flags and shouted “president” as Park’s car entered the facility.

Prosecutors can detain her for up to 20 days before formally charging her, meaning she will likely be in jail while her case is heard. A district court normally issues a ruling within six months of an indictment.

The Seoul court’s decision is yet another humiliating fall for Park, South Korea’s first female president who was elected in 2012 amid overwhelming support from conservatives, who recall her dictator father as a

Prosecutors accuse Park of colluding with a confidante to extort big businesses, take a bribe from one of the companies and commit other wrongdoing. The allegations led millions of South

Koreans to protest in the streets every weekend for months before lawmakers impeached her in December and the Constitutional Court ruled in March to formally remove her from office.

It made Park the country’s first democratically elected leader to be forced from office since democracy came here in the late

1980s. South Korea will hold an election in May to choose Park’s successor. Opinion surveys say liberal opposition leader Moon Jae-in, who lost the 2012 election to Park, is the favourite.

Prosecutors can charge Park without arresting her. But they said they wanted to arrest her because the allegations against her are “grave” and because other suspects involved the scandal, including her confidante Choi Soon-sil and Samsung heir Lee Jae-yong, have already been arrested.

The Seoul court said it decided to approve Park’s arrest because it believes key allegations against her were confirmed and there were worries that she may try to destroy evidence.

A day earlier, Park was questioned at a court hearing for nearly nine hours. As she left for the hearing, hundreds of her supporters, many of them elderly citizens, gathered at her private Seoul home. They wept, chanted slogans and tried to block Park’s car before being pushed back by police.

In brief Kim’s body released Malaysia has released the body of the assassinated half-brother of North Korea’s leader following negotiations with Pyongyang.

Prime Minister Najib Razak said a coroner had approved the release of Kim Jong-nam’s body. Mr Kim was murdered at Kuala Lumpur airport with a lethal nerve agent last month. The assassination led to a major diplomatic dispute between Malaysia and North Korea.

Malaysia has not directly blamed North Korea for the killing, but there is widespread suspicion that Pyongyang was responsible. - AP

Church in mourning The deaths of 13 senior adults in a crash as they returned home from a retreat has left fellow worshippers at their Texas church mourning the smiling regulars who served in the kitchen, led Bible studies and spent time in fellowship. “They were part of our church family,” said Brad McLean, senior pastor of First Baptist Church in New Braunfels, Texas. Authorities said the church members who died in the crash ranged in age from 61 to 87. They were returning home from a threeday church retreat when the small bus they were travelling in and a pickup truck collided head-on. - AP

‘Angel of Death’ dies after attack in prison cell The “Angel of Death” serial killer, who admitted to killing three dozen hospital patients in Ohio and Kentucky during the 1970s and 80s, has died after being attacked in his prison cell.

A prisons spokeswoman says Donald Harvey, 64, died at 2am Friday NZ time, two days after state troopers say he was found beaten in his cell at the state’s prison in Toledo.

The assault happened about 7am Wednesday NZ time, and Lieutenant Robert Sellers told the Toledo Blade that they have a suspect, but did not release anymore information.

Harvey became known as the “Angel of Death” after pleading

Donald Harvey guilty in 1987 to 37 murders.

He later said he had killed as many as 50 more.

He committed the murders while working as a hospital aide,

using a variety of methods, including turning off ventilators, giving patients fluid infected with hepatitis B, and suffocation.

But many of the killings involved his favourite poisons, arsenic and cyanide, which he would administer in food, using injections, or through an IV. Harvey had suffered sexual abuse at the hands of his uncle and a neighbour between the ages of 4 and 20, and was raped by his male roommate in 1970, when he was 18.

He also became fascinated by witchcraft and neo-Nazi groups as he grew older.

His first kill was on May 30,

1970 when he killed 88-yearold Logan Evans with a sheet of plastic and a pillow, and listened to his heart with a stethoscope as he died.

The following day he accidentally killed James Tyree, 69, when he used the wrong size catheter on him.

His third victim, on June 22, was also the first of a series of “mercy killings”. He said Elizabeth Wyatt, 42, had been praying to die so he turned down her oxygen supply until she died.

He killed people at Marymount Hospital in London, Kentucky, the Cincinnati VA Medical Hospital and Cincinnati’s Drake Memorial Hospital.

Atlanta officials say a massive fire that burned for more than an hour and caused the collapse of an interstate overpass has been extinguished. Fire department spokesman Sgt. Cortez Stafford said the fire was under control.

Stafford said a portion of the bridge on I-85 fell about 7pm. Witnesses say troopers told motorists to turn around on the bridge because they were concerned about its integrity.

Minutes later, the bridge collapsed.

Ferry heads to port A corroding 6800-ton ferry raised from the bottom of the sea off South Korea last week is now heading to port, where it will be searched for the remains of nine missing passengers from a 2014 sinking that killed 304. The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries said a heavy lift transport vessel carrying the ferry was expected to reach port late yesterday.

Day-Shift Chiller Leading Hand (Hours of work are between 7am-5pm) You will be responsible for the day-to-day organisation and allocation of chillers, and marking-up of products to specific customer requirements and standards. Strong customer service and comunication skills are essential.

Key tasks may include (but are not limited to): • communication with customers, including generating reports • ensuring communication with transport companies is up-to-date and stock is accurately dispatched • maintaining a high standard of quality by completing process control checks • producing weekly and monthly reports as required Night-Shift Load Out Leading Hand (Hours of work are between 7pm-5am) Our multi-species carcass allocation and load-out operation requires a Leading Hand responsible for the day-to-day organisation of chillers during the night, loading of trucks for customer delivery and communicating with various transport companies.
