An increasing number of prospective homeowners and landlords are opting to test properties for methamphetamine, an Ashburton real estate agent says. Kim Miller, a registered methamphetamine tester for MethSolutions, has seen the demand for the service escalate in recent weeks. “People are increasingly aware of the problem – it’s at the front of their minds,” she said.
Nationwide, up to 70 per cent of tested rental properties will return a positive result at some time, pointing to the extent of the problem in New Zealand, according to the MethSolutions statistics. “New Zealand and Australia have the highest rate of P (a common street name for the drug) users in the world,” Mrs Miller said. “In terms of prevalence P can be found in any town, any time anywhere and Ashburton is no different. “Last month about 40 per cent of the
company’s tests came back positive.” Users can be found across all echelons of society and are likely to live in top end accommodation as they are in social housing. “The measured demographic of P users, if there is such a thing, is a woman aged 35 to 50 with a disposable income – which is very scary,” she said.
