Pupils at Longbeach School will soon swap surfing the internet for surfing the waves. In a new initiative launched today, the school will be holding surfing lessons for pupils at Ashton Beach. The new programme, which will begin with the Year 7 and 8 students, will see pupils and teachers “hanging 10” and hitting the waves. Principal Neil Simons said surfing was not only great for physical health, but it was also fantastic for mental health. He hoped the lessons would encourage the pupils to think more about their natural environment. “As we see more surfers, we see a better world,” he said.
“A world made of people who know how to take care of their natural resources, who enjoy the ride of life, that know that in front of the immensity of the oceans we are all just human-beings wanting to pursue our happiness in a peaceful world.” He said the pupils were “very excited” about hitting the waves and they aren’t the only ones. “The parents are really excited about this new initiative, as they can see the benefits of the programme,” Mr Simons said. Unorthodox outdoor education programmes seem to be increasingly popular in Mid Canterbury schools. Methven Primary School principal Chris Murphy said while surfing was not on the agenda yet, he was looking at mountaineering as an option for the
junior school. The surfing programme at Longbeach School could also be the catalyst for renewed interest in the sport locally, with Mr Simons hoping to see a wave of keen young surfers heading to Mid Canterbury beaches. If enough interest was sparked, big changes could be on the horizon for Ashburton’s latest big-ticket project. “We are hoping to lobby the council to add a wave pool to the new EA Sports Centre so that we can grow the sport locally,” Mr Simons said. Ashburton District Mayor Angus McKay said the council had discussed the possibility of a wave pool at the centre, but it went out for consultation on a hydroslide instead. It was hoped local surfers would be ready to hit the pro-circuit by April 1 next year.
