Funny girl from AshVegas Rookie comedian Bec Sandys is finding success in the world of comedy production and is rubbing shoulders with top names in the business.

Susan Sandys reports.

T

here’s a persona Bec Sandys portrays when she gets up in front of a crowd.

She’s the girl who grew up in AshVegas and Methven, rocked it out in her bedroom to homemade cassette mix tapes, taught her younger sister to smoke at the age of 10 and caused mayhem at woolshed parties.

That was all before the bogan phase really kicked in, followed by the hippy phase.

It’s a picture that never fails to get audiences laughing, even if they are not from Mid Canterbury.

That’s the power of comedy, the gags that work best are those that have a sense of authenticity about them. People are identifying not just with the punchline, but with the whole narrative, and the person behind it. continued next page

Bec’s passion for comedy and acting grew from when she was just a child, fol-

lowing a role in Ashburton Operatic’s production of Annie. She later studied theatre and film at the University of Canterbury and has starred in amateur and professional productions in Christchurch. In 2015 she won a Theatrefest regional best actor

award. In 2016 she scored a lead role in the feature-length movie Cade. The movie was never released, but Bec made many contacts in the industry and got into comedy producing shortly after. continued over page

Performing comedy herself is her first love, it is something she enjoys doing even more than producing.

The first time she did this was in 2017 at Auckland comedy club The Classic, considered the home of comedy in New Zealand.

“Everyone who’s a great comedian in

New Zealand has walked the boards of that stage, from rookies up to top professionals,” she said.

“I thought I will give it a go, if I get a few laughs that will be good, but people really liked it, and I got addicted to the adrenalin.”

She has been performing ever since, at comedy nights in Auckland and Christchurch.

This year a career high came in the form of having her Role Models show accepted at the New Zealand International Comedy Festival, starring herself alongside fellow comedians Audrey Porn and Brooke West.

She is now writing another show, aiming to take it to the festival next year, as well as fringe festivals in New Zealand.

Bec makes no pretences about life as a comedian and comedy producer – it does not bring in quite enough to pay the bills.

Splitting her time between Christchurch and Auckland is difficult.

Her professional background is mainly in marketing and event management. In order to help pay the mortgage she takes on temporary work in these fields, as well as a barista.

“It’s hard, I have thought about giving up comedy and going back to fulltime work, but I just love it too much.”

As brutal as it is to the bank balance, comedy can have an even more harming effect on the ego.

The shows are R18 and generally performed in pubs, and there is always the possibility of hecklers taking things one step too far. At one gig an audience member grabbed the crotch of one of the male performers and he was quickly evicted.

“Sometimes you can ignore it, but sometimes you do have to draw the line,” she said.

Crowds are also, of course, honest with what they find funny and what they don’t find funny.

“Sometimes you will spend hours writing something and then when you perform it, no-one finds it funny,” she said.

“It’s an ongoing process, I’m always trying to find that perfect balance and get the laughs.

“Comedy isn’t about you, it’s about making the audience laugh.”

Bec bases herself in both Christchurch and Auckland, but her two main venues for producing are Auckland and, more recently, Methven.

“I thought Methven would be a really great place to do comedy, because they tell really good yarns out there.”

She has spent a lot of time in the ski town in years gone by, with family based there and as a keen snowboarder.

She held an open mic night last week, where half a dozen people performed, and she sold out the venue.

She will be holding another night again on August 1 and said she already had a few people lined up to give performing a go.

And on August 31, Bec is bringing Wellington comedian Li’i Alaimona to the Blue Pub in Methven.

Diet, lifestyle can affect your skin

Does your diet have any impact on your skin? Niki Bezzant explains.

Can what we eat help our skin look clear, youthful and glowing? As an acne-plagued teen, I hoped this was true; I avoided junk food and ate dusty-tasting carob instead of chocolate, just in case the latter was aggravating my skin.

Sadly nothing much made a difference that I could see. Time and age eventually took care of my acne; ironically by about the time it was replaced with wrinkles.

But things have moved on in nutrition and dermatology since the 80s, and it’s acknowledged these days that diet and lifestyle factors have definite links with skin health, just as with other systems in the body.

We still may not be able to eat away acne, but we can definitely eat for a healthier appearance overall.

There’s no magic here. We know instinctively I think that when we are healthy and eating well, sleeping well, not drinking too much and not under too much stress, we tend to look better. Science has some things to say about this too.

It’s known that nutrition plays a key role in the normal functioning of our skin. We need to eat a balanced diet for the building and repair of skin cells.

But there have also been studies looking at how nutrition impacts specifically on

appearance and how well (or poorly) our skin ages.

A 2007 US study of 4000 women aged between 40 and 74 found that higher intakes of vitamin C and linoleic acid (an essential fatty acid) were associated with better skin ageing and appearance. So were lower intakes of carbohydrate and fat overall.

A review in 2012 of the literature linking nutrition and skin ageing looked at many different factors, including ingredients we often see in topical skincare: Vitamins A, C, E and D; Coenzyme Q10; green tea.

It concluded that there’s some value in the intake of antioxidants to support the skin and slow down the ageing process.

But for those hoping to take a shortcut

with one of the many beauty-oriented supplements around, the researchers sounded a note of warning: popping a pill is not the way to do it, they said.

“Fruit and vegetables consumption may represent the most healthy and safe method in order to maintain a balanced diet and youthful appearing skin”, was their verdict.

So, what are the foods that will do the job? Again, there’s no one magic food that will give us lovely skin.

The antioxidant polyphenols the researchers identified are found in lots of foods. Polyphenols are plant-derived chemicals that it’s thought might defend us against ultraviolet radiation and attack from pathogens.

To get your polyphenols, think colour: vegetables like broccoli, spinach, asparagus and tomatoes, and red, blue and black fruit like strawberries and blueberries.

There are polyphenols in tea and coffee, too, and yes, in red wine – although too much of that will have the opposite effect.

There are also polyphenols in tea and coffee.

Fat is important for skin health; specifically the essential fatty acids, which may also have a protective role against sun damage. These are found in lots of foods: fish, shellfish, flaxseed, hemp oil, canola oil, chia seeds, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, walnuts, sesame seeds, avocados, salmon and tuna, among others.

Are you sensing a theme here? A skin-friendly diet is sounding a lot like a Mediterranean pattern of eating; a diet of nutrient-dense, whole, unprocessed foods.

Which as we know is anti-inflammatory, and also has lots of benefits for our health overall.

Add to that the accompanying lifestyle factors: not smoking; drinking minimal alcohol; getting enough sleep and keeping a lid on stress, and we’re likely to be on our

way to if not a smooth-skinned old age, certainly a healthy-looking one.

And what about acne? Evidence now suggests that there are some foods that can aggravate it. Foods that rank high on the glycaemic index – refined carbohydrates like white bread, cakes and biscuits – when eaten in large amounts, have been shown to promote acne.

A low-GI diet may help to improve it.

And as it turns out, teenage me was depriving myself for no reason: chocolate is

mostly low-GI, so it’s unlikely to be causing spots.

How to hugely improve balance P

roprioception is a little known and little challenged sensory system that when understood, can really help you improve your balance.

Whether for improving your control and lowering injury risk in netball or basketball or decreasing your risk of a fall, this is well worth a go!

First of all, it is helpful to know the three different systems that combine to help keep you upright.

The first is the vestibular system, which are little organs in your inner ear that detect movement of the head. The second is your visual system which helps in detecting your movement relative to other objects. Last but not least is your proprioceptive system, which gives us positional awareness from the rest of our body and, as well as proprioception, is often also called kinesthesia.

Our proprioceptive system gives us the ability to know where we are in space, without relying on our eyes, but is so often lost and not challenged well enough to regain it after injury or as we age.

Often when I ask patients to balance on one leg, they straight away fix their eyes on one spot, but that isn’t testing the proprioceptive system much, but mainly the visual system. This is often the case in balance classes as well, where people are at times actually encouraged to fix their vision on one spot, massively missing on improvements by not challenging the proprioception.

When we are playing sport, going for a walk or a run, we aren’t fixing our vision on one spot, so if we can mimic real life and let our eyes wander when working on balance, we can make much bigger improvements.

Quick test: Here is a very easy way to see if you need to work on your balance – stand on one leg (just make sure you are near a bench to grab on to if needed) and see how long you can hold it for.

Then compare that to balancing on the same leg with your eyes closed.

Through this you can sometimes see the huge difference when you are relying on your vestibular and proprioceptive systems rather than your vision.

As a guide, a normal amount of time to be able to stand on one leg with eyes closed is 10-15 seconds for those aged 18-39 and this then decreases with age.

If you are under 50 and struggle to stand on one leg with your eyes closed for 10 seconds, then it is definitely something you can work on!

You don’t need to close your eyes when practising, but also try not to look at one spot when practising, try instead throwing a ball around with someone or looking around outside.

Ginger biscuits

125g butter 225g sugar 225g flour 1/2 t baking soda 1t baking powder 4t ginger 2T golden syrup 1 egg

– Set oven to 180°C. Grease a tray with butter and flour and set aside. Measure out the butter, cut into small cubes and set aside to become soft.

– Measure the sugar and set aside.

– Measure the flour and the dry ingredients and sift together and set aside.

– Using a cake mixer, place the softened butter and sugar and set on low and mix the two ingredients together until they

are creamed – become soft and white in colour. Stop and clear the butter and sugar from the sides as you go.

When the butter and sugar are creamed, add the egg and mix quickly until blended. Remove cake mixer and hand mix all the three ingredients thoroughly. Add the golden syrup and mix.

Sift the dry ingredients and, using a spatula, make sure the ingredients are blended through.

Using a teaspoon, make round balls and place on tray. DO NOT FLATTEN. Place in the middle of the oven and cook for 12 minutes.

Set aside and finish the dough. Makes plenty of small ginger biscuits. Take out of the oven to cool, then place on a wire rack to go cold.

ronchitis occurs when there is irritation of the mucous membranes that line the lungs.

They are inflamed and make excess amounts of phlegm. The associated inflammation causes coughing due to the restriction of the airways. The body is working hard to try and expel the excess mucous build-up.

Bronchitis can be an acute or chronic condition, often following a cold or influenza virus. It can be quite debilitating, but often resolves itself on its own. If you have any concerns with infection, be sure to seek medical advice.

Symptoms that accompany bronchitis is a predominant persistent cough, a build-up of excess phlegm that the body is constantly trying to expel, chest discomfort that is associated with chronic coughing, wheezing described as a whistling sound upon exhaling being caused by constricted airways associated with the cough.

Breathlessness can occur also when the nose and throat are blocked with phlegm.

Clearing these passages can allow for deeper chest breathing. A runny nose and fatigue are also often associated with the bronchitis and they subside as the condition gets better.

Home remedies to treat acute/chronic bronchitis: Chamomile or peppermint tea: Peppermint and chamomile have antispasmodic properties that help to alleviate the muscle constriction often associated with bronchitis. Drink when required. Always use good quality herbal teas to get the desired herbal effects needed.

Drink plenty of fluids: Keeping fluids up is all important for aiding bronchitis. Drinking herbal teas, diluted fruit juices, warm water and freshly-squeezed orange juice can help to keep

fluid levels up and avoid dehydration.

Drinking a herbal tea such as lemon honey, ginger and cinnamon, use 1/2 the juice of a lemon, 1t honey, 1 slice of ginger and a pinch of cinnamon.

This blend should soothe the throat and help with the spasming, aid in the cough and clear the passageways to allow for easier breathing. Include 1-2 ginger biscuits from recipe on P21 with any of the above teas.

Salt water solutions: If you don’t stock any of the above teas in your pantry and feel too sick to go to the shop to get any of the products or make the ginger biscuit recipe provided, a simple salt water solution could be of great benefit.

Use 1t of salt in a small glass of water – gargle, rinse and spit until the glass of water has been finished.

This method helps to dry out the phlegm sitting in the back of the throat, soothing the irritation and persistent cough associated with bronchitis.

Garlic, ginger and cinnamon: Garlic, ginger and cinnamon are all beneficial in aiding with the symptoms of bronchitis. Try and get garlic into your diet whenever possible.

Chop 1 clove of garlic and pop that into a 1/2 C of plain yoghurt, on top of toast.

Or try a clove sliced and put into a toasted sandwich.

Garlic’s considered nature’s antibiotic, so

if

the phlegm is yellow or green, the garlic can help with getting rid of any lingering infection.

Ginger is a great spice to aid in the opening of the airways, to allow for more efficient breathing and helps stop the muscle spasms of the bronchitis.

Cinnamon is really helpful for coughing. It works really well as an antispasmodic, antimicrobial, and antibacterial. An easy option is to put 1/4 t of cinnamon on to 1t of honey and have it off the spoon. Considered a fast and effective way to soothe a cough.

Oranges and lemons: Oranges and lemons are great natural source of vitamin C, if you don’t have powder or tablets at home.

Vitamin C is used up really fast during an infection, therefore replenishing this vitamin is important as the body does not make it itself and is required from food sources.

It’s the number one nutrient required during an infection and a great way to get fluid into you when you are feeling absolutely miserable.

Get plenty of rest: Most important of all is to get that extra

rest and sleep where possible, as suffering from bronchitis can be really draining on your energy reserves. It can also disrupt sleep with coughing attacks. Getting that much-needed rest helps your body concentrate on healing itself.

Cough medicines: Sourcing a cough medicine with a variety of authentic herbs appropriate for chest conditions and a deep-seated cough is well worth the money if you are really struggling with a long-term cough.

The cough associated with bronchitis can linger for a very long time, which then interferes with your body’s ability to become completely healthy once again.

Herbal cough medicines to look for are ones that contain good-quality herbs that target the cough required for treatment.

Above are some suggested home remedies that may help to move your body through a bout of bronchitis quickly and effectively.

Because sometimes doing nothing at all only helps hinder the healing time.

I

Duct tape is my friend

’m embracing the number eight wire mentality this month.

My car, which I’ve had for around 18 months, is much lower than the previous 4WD, coupled with my confidence driving in paddocks which is suddenly much higher.

So when I went for a fearless off-road mission to deliver a beauty of a flat white to the farmer (yes, I’m the best wife ever) unsurprisingly I heard a crunch-scrapedrag sort of a noise from underneath my vehicle. But living by the mantra of don’t sweat the small stuff, I was barely bothered by it.

Until, that is, a few weeks later, on my way in to the bright lights of Ashvegas, when

I once again heard the scrape-drag and this time a bit of a click from under the car as I crossed the railway lines. Only now, it wasn’t going away.

A quick investigation while in a shop carpark revealed two things. One, that I had punctured a hole in that plastic under-thingy of my car, and two, it had also split and dropped, with one part of it now dragging along the ground. Bugger.

These sorts of things always happen when the farmer is away and, right on cue, I’d realised he was in Wellington for the weekend.

As I tried to think of what to do, like a beacon of light, the farmer’s sister appeared in front of me (all glammed up for a fancy lunch she was heading off to). Merran is a townie now, but thankfully spent her years

as a kid kicking around at the farm.

She just knows things I don’t and thinks a bit differently to this Aucklander.

I explained my conundrum and like a flash of a superhero she took off inside the shop and reappeared with a $7 roll of duct tape.

We’ll tape it! Even in her new, black, floor-length dress, with fancy earrings and a face full of lipstick, she managed to slink down on the cold and dirty concrete to begin the task of taping it all back together.

I obviously was helpful too – I was on the look-out for cars, so she didn’t get run over, which luckily she didn’t.

She then stood up, brushed herself off and headed out to lunch. Impressed!

She left me with some advice to take the underbody thing-a-ma-jig off with a Phillips (whoever that is) and sort out a new one. But I’m back to being relaxed again and several weeks on that $7 dollar duct tape is still doing a mighty job holding my car together!

In this month’s issue discover some quick and easy brunch ideas for you and the family.

From moroccan chicken souvlakis to simple, yet tasty, French toasties, this month’s issue is perfect for your weekend cravings!

FOR FOODIES with Sarah Kingsbury

Moroccan chicken souvlaki Makes 6 souvlakis

Coleslaw: 3 silverbeet leaves 1C each red and green cabbage 1 carrot 1/2 red onion

3 chicken breasts 3T moroccan seasoning 6 souvlaki breads 1/2 C grated cheese Sweet chilli sauce

Yoghurt dressing Handful mint leaves, roughly chopped 3T mint sauce 500g unsweetened yoghurt 1t garlic, crushed 1/2 cucumber, chopped into fine dice

Hummus: 1 lemon Small handful parsley 2T tahini paste 1/4 C sesame oil 1 can chickpeas

– Dice the 3 chicken breasts. Mix them with oil and moroccan seasoning before frying. Fry on a hotplate until cooked, a golden-orange tinge. Place to the side.

– To make the yoghurt dressing: Combine mint leaves, mint sauce, salt and pepper, yoghurt, garlic and cucumber.

– To make the hummus: Whiz chickpeas with sesame oil. After, add in tahini paste, whole lemon, minus ends, and parsley. Mix in salt and pepper for a final touch and blend the mixture until

smooth.

– To make the coleslaw: Shred red and green cabbage and grate the carrot.

Dice the red onion and the silverbeet.

Mix all vegetables together for the coleslaw.

– Leave the chicken, coleslaw, yoghurt dressing and hummus mixtures to the side while preparing the souvlaki bread.

– Heat 6 breads with oil in a frying pan.

When hot spread the hummus mixture, grated cheese and baby spinach over. Place a handful of the coleslaw and cooked chicken on top.

– For a tasty finish, add lots of the yoghurt dressing and sweet chilli sauce.

– Souvlakis can be served flat or rolled up with a skewer through the middle.

Kumara, pumpkin, bacon soup 1/2 pumpkin 4 large kumaras 2 onions 2L water 2C cream 200g bacon 2T garlic 1T vege stock powder 1T chicken stock powder Salt and pepper 1T curry powder

– Firstly, place the half pumpkin on an oven tray. Do the same with the 4 kumaras as they are. Roast the kumara and pumpkin at 160°C until cooked, approximately 45 minutes.

– Remove kumara and pumpkin from oven tray and leave to cool, once cool take off the skin and scoop out any pips. Throw the flesh into a large pot to be used in the soup.

– Add all other ingredients – onion, cream, bacon, garlic, vege and chicken stock, salt and pepper and curry. Then pour in the water. Boil the ingredients together for 20 minutes and then whizz the mixture well.

– Finally, check the seasoning and add salt and pepper if desired.

French toasty Makes 6

12 slices fat toast bread 9 eggs 3/4 C cream 12 slices streaky bacon Baby spinach Swiss cheese slices Hollandaise sauce Tomato relish Salt and pepper

– Fry 6 eggs and the streaky bacon in a pan until cooked, keeping them to the side for now.

– Then, whisk the remaining 3 eggs, cream, salt and pepper together to create the bread dip.

– Dip the bread slices in the egg mixture on both sides.

Fry the bread until cooked.

– To assemble the toasty, place 1 piece of fried bread on the bottom, then tomato relish, a cheese slice, baby spinach, 2 slices of bacon, 1 fried egg.

– Spread hollandaise sauce over the second slice of bread and put the sandwich together.

– Done! Serve for a family brunch or for yourself. This dish can be reheated in an oven for 10 minutes if desired.

The Mt Dobson Snow Shuttle operates each day from Fairlie to Mt Dobson Ski Area and back.

It departs the Fairlie BP at 8.45am and leaves the ski area at 3.45pm.

There is also a pick up at the bottom of the mountain road at 9.00am.

The cost is $35 per adult return trip or $25 for children aged 12 and under.

If the kids love machinery, there are often old tractors and farm equipment out on display, as well as historic fire engines.

Methven Skills Park

The Methven Skills Park, ie BMX and Pump track, is such a great community project that shows that volunteerism, hard work and fundraising definitely still exists in small communities such as this.

This skills park is probably aimed at school children and older, however younger kids will be able to do parts of this with help.

If you have older children, this is definitely worth the trip as the huge downhill will help the kids get plenty of air. Young kids will just have to be careful if it is busy.

Parents will need to be hands-on with under fives.

Winter blues?

By Louise Thompson ot so long ago was the shortest day of the year – June 21.

Dark when you woke up.

Dark very early evening too.

You are not alone if you feel that you lose your mojo during winter, feeling down, tired and losing that natural zest for life you have in the summer. Here are some strategies to help you beat the winter blues and stay happy through the chill: 1. Start the day with purpose A good start to the morning is key, especially when you start and finish your work day in the dark. Make a plan the night before – what do you want to achieve the next day?

Get organised with your food, gym kit, etc, and start the day off positively. Get as much sunlight as you can during the day to naturally regulate your mood (even nipping out of artificial lights at lunchtime for a brisk walk round the block will help) and if you can, squeeze your exercise in and move your body in the morning to set you up for the day.

2. Be social Summer is full of barbecues and socials galore. In the winter, not so much, as people tend to hunker down at home.

Social interaction is a powerful mood booster so make the effort to deliberately create some winter socials.

Create some excuses for planned social interaction that

don’t rely on perfect weather conditions.

3. Practise extreme self-care When we have a bit of a summer glow and are outside a lot our self-care is naturally better (being seen in a bikini is also strangely motivating).

Again this is something that can slip in the winter, so make a plan to keep your self-care standards high.

From nurturing and pampering (long bubble baths, pedicures, facials, whatever that is for you) to regular exercise. If you are finding self-motivated exercise (eg, running solo) harder as the nights draw in, join some organised group exercise like a dance class or bootcamp. If you look good you feel good and that is an instant remedy for the winter blues.

4. Attitude is everything We get down when we fight reality. So moaning about the weather does not make the weather any better. So, accept that’s what creates our beautiful clean green environment.

It’s easy to get in a group where we can talk each other into being miserable which, although there is a sense of camaraderie to the moan-fest, it really helps no-one. Embrace the time and space we have for reflection at this time of year to stretch out of your comfort zone creatively, physically or intellectually.

Hormone imbalances

Hormones are an incredible network of chemicals that influence how we feel daily.

When our hormone levels are higher or lower than optimal, we may find that we don’t feel our best.

4 – Acne and skin issues

What shows up on your skin is almost always an expression of what’s going on inside, and hormones are often part of the picture.

DESTINATION with Nathan

Every year, the Globus family of brands take away their top 10 sellers from New Zealand (and top 20 from Australia) on a trip and this year, I made the cut, we were off to the USA! Flying direct from Auckland to Chicago was relatively easy, especially given that we did it in 14 hours instead of the scheduled 15! On arrival we were met by our amazing tour director Peter and whisked away to our hotel.

Chicago is known for its architecture and is on the banks of Lake Michigan where parks basically run between the lake and buildings for the length of the city.

It is also home to the deep dish pizza, Chicago style hot dogs (complete with nine ingredients) and brownie to name a few – we got to taste the best on a food tour!

After two nights, we travelled to St Louis, home of the Gateway Arch (the world’s tallest arch), before heading to one of my highlights of the tour – Nashville!

I was not into country music at all before, but after visiting the Country Music Hall of Fame, Ryman Auditorium and spending an evening with three songwriters who talked about their lives and singing some of their songs over dinner, that all changed!

Great live music at the bars – day and night – something for everyone. We also visited historic RCA Studio B where more than 200 of Elvis Presley’s songs were recorded, so it was an honour for us to record a song of our own in the same studio, Elvis’s Can’t Help Falling in Love!

Memphis was our next stop, famous for blues, soul and rock ‘n’ roll, Graceland and the National Civil Rights Museum ¬ located in the former Lorraine Motel where Dr Martin Luther King Jr was assassinated!

But also the Peabody Hotel where, since 1933, the Peabody ducks have been walking the red carpet from the hotel fountain to the lift to their palace on the rooftop!

Finally, our biggest travel day, took us to New Orleans, my next favourite city after Nashville, with its distinctive French and American quarters, jazz music and where Creole and Cajun cuisines have unique

heritages and complex backgrounds.

The main highlight here was going out onto the swamp and bayous on an airboat and holding an alligator!

We also made cocktails, had a cooking demonstration and enjoyed a walking tour where we sampled Beignets made from deep fried choux pastry and covered in icing sugar, delicious!

As I said, our tour director Peter was amazing, he was knowledgeable, passionate and fun. He had different outfits for each city which got us in the mood for what was to come, he really made the tour for us. This is the second coach tour I have done and I truly believe it is a great way to travel, whether you’re a first time or experienced traveller.

ypical winter conditions now dominate with frosts, chilly prevailing winds, wet and cold soil – hardly inviting gardening weather!

However, the gloom of winter is lightened by the appearance of flowers on azaleas, camellias, daphne, early-flowering rhododendrons and the first of the flowering cherries Prunus campanulate.

Houseplants A reminder not to overwater your houseplants in winter, some plants require watering only once a week. A light misting of indoor plants with lukewarm water helps prevent leaves from drying in heated indoor conditions, you may need to shift your houseplants during the winter months as parts of the house can become too dark for healthy growth.

Vegetable garden Continue harvesting winter maturing vegetables, artichokes (jerusalem), broccoli, brussels sprouts, cabbages, cauliflowers, carrots, celery, leeks, lettuce, parsnips, peas, silverbeet, spinach and swedes. Spread compost around maturing vegetables as this helps absorb excess water during winter downpours and eventually improves the soil. By raising vegetable plots drainage is enhanced and vegetable growth improved.

Flowering annuals Winter flowering annuals should now be providing masses of colour in your garden and containers. Remove dead flowers, deadheading encourages continuous blooming throughout winter.

Flowering annuals for winter display include ageratum, calendulas, cineraria, cornflower, nemesias, pansies, poppies, primulas, snapdragon, stock and sweet pea. continued over page

From P37 Fruit trees After completing the annual pruning of fruit trees, spray with copper oxychloride to reduce the possibility of fungal disease reappearing in spring.

Kiwifruit can now be pruned as all the fruit have been harvested. In warmer areas a number of citrus are now ripening, mandarins, lemons, limes, grapefruit and early oranges. Complete any plantings of new pip and stone fruit trees.

Ornamental trees and shrubs Garden centres now have the widest range of trees and shrubs. July is a very ‘safe’ month for planting so prepare individual planting sites thoroughly with plenty of compost.

Roses Complete your annual rose pruning, spray with copper oxychloride after pruning.

Plant new specimens where required as garden centres have excellent supplies in July. Plant into well-prepared soil to which compost has been added. Prune your new plants to outward facing buds before planting.

Container gardens Potted colour (winter annuals grown to the flower stage) brightens up a dreary winter garden and provides an instant flowering effect! Always use a good quality container mix or potting mix.

Lawns A quiet month for lawn maintenance, but an excellent time to have the blades on your mower sharpened! Check for wet areas in your lawn that will require remedial drainage work in summer.

Moth woes

Kathleen Glassey is this month’s winner with the following question: I found this stick-like insect crawling up my window here in Mid Canterbury. I have been told it could be a bagworm. I have never heard of these before and any information you can provide would be great. I have a rhododendron that looks like something is eating it and on close inspection, there are several cocoon types of insects hanging. Could these be the same thing? Only these aren’t as colourful as the one in the photo.

The picture provided is an excellent example of a case moth. The caterpillars of this moth build a covering over their bodies as they grow and carry these spindle-shaped bags around with them. The caterpillars feed on the leaves of both evergreen and deciduous trees and shrubs.

Where small garden shrubs are infested in limited numbers, hand picking and destruction of the caterpillars within the cases should be an adequate means of control.

A garden hose at high pressure can also be used to remove the caterpillars in large shrubs or trees. They can be sprayed with an insecticide, however, this can affect beneficial insects in the garden.
