Dear Readers, Welcome to our 24th edition of Asheboro Magazine – wow, two whole years have gone by since we launched the magazine. About 12 issues ago people finally stopped asking, “Aren’t you going to run out of things to write about in Asheboro?” I think they started to realize there is a lot going on in this town!

I recently got a chance to speak with Elizabeth Hudson, Editor of Our State magazine. She graciously agreed to be our Community Character this month and it was refreshing to find out we had so much in common. We shared stories, ideas and lunch at Bistro 42. I look forward to seeing her more often in Asheboro, as she had some great things to say about the changes that have been taking place here.

feature, which while popular, wasn’t local enough for our readers. We are launching Motherhood, written by Gina McKee, a local school teacher and mom. She will be regaling us with the joys of raising a busy toddler, soon to be infant, working and being a wife at the same time. I look forward to her stories and insights and hope you will find something to help you through the same stages of life.

I don’t know about you, but I miss drive-in movies. When I was a kid, we would pile into my Dad’s Chevy Blazer, loaded down with pillows and blankets because I always fell asleep before the second feature started! We drove in and picked out our spot, hooking the speaker to the car window. Then I would wheedle money out of my Dad so I could hit the concession stand for candy, popcorn and soda.

In high school the drive-in movies became all about who you were with and what kind of car they were driving, instead of what film was playing. Drivein movies were a wonderful part of growing up, and I get a little nostalgic whenever I drive by one that has been

shut down.

MY FUN MANIFESTO -PART DEUX

L

ast month I started writing My Fun Manifesto as a part of a series. I have yet to decide how long the series is going to be; as long as it takes for me to wake up in the morning and say to myself, “Self, I couldn’t be happier if I had all the tea in China.” Perhaps that day will never come, but I’d argue there are worse things I could be doing than searching for pure, unadulterated happiness. Again, it isn’t that I am UNhappy; on the contrary. I have so much to be happy and grateful for, but there is something missing, and to date, I haven’t been able to put my finger on it. Maybe, with the help of My Fun Manifesto, I will not only find the missing piece, but also solve some of the world’s ills in the process.

Although last month’s list was only seven items long, it proved to be a bit overwhelming. So much change in such a short period of time is daunting, even for the most open minded of us. Therefore, I picked the first item on the list and focused on doing less of the things I hate doing and more of the things I love doing. The result was nothing short of extraordinary. I read more. In fact, I finished a novel I have been trying to read for about six months. I watched some mindless television. I worked less. And, I spent time with friends.

We even hosted a 10





party. The long and short of it - I am happier than I was last month when I began writing this series.

One of the things not on last month’s list will be the only thing on this month’s - taking inventory of all that I have to be grateful for and focusing on what I have as opposed to what I don’t have. I started doing this last month, even though it wasn’t on the list, and I want to share the results.

All too often, I find myself admiring the things that other people have and wondering where I went wrong.

What I realized is I

didn’t go wrong. I just didn’t go in the same direction they did. In reflection, I am certain there are things I have that other people wish they had. And, when I took inventory of all I do have, I concluded that I am very fortunate indeed.

One of the other things I did, which was on the list, was spend more time reading funny or inspirational things on the internet. I am in front of the computer all day so it is easy to get caught up in my work and

not take time to better myself. If nothing else, I figured it would make me smile. In doing this, I stumbled upon a website called Marc and Angel Hack Life-Practical Tips to Productive Living (www.marcandangel.com). Specifically, I landed on an article titled 25 Inspiring Stories to Make You Smile. After reading them, I was not only happier; I knew I had to share them with the readers of Asheboro Magazine.

I e-mailed Marc and Angel and got permission to republish some of the stories. These were my favorite. Please be sure to visit their site and read the others.

1. Today, my dad turned 91. He barely has enough strength to speak. But every time my mom (she’s 84) walks into the room to check on him, he says, “Hello beautiful.”

2. Today, when she woke up from a six month coma, she kissed me and said, “Thank you for being here, and telling me those beautiful stories, and never giving up on me… And yes, I will marry you.”

3. Today, my grandpa keeps an old, candid photo on his nightstand of my grandma and him laughing together at some party in the 1960’s. My grandma passed away from cancer in 1999 when I was 7. This evening when I was at his house, my grandpa caught me staring at the photo. He walked up, hugged me from behind and said, “Remember, just because something doesn’t last forever, doesn’t mean it wasn’t worth your while.”

4. Today, as I pulled into my apartment complex I noticed my neighbor, who’s about 8 months pregnant, struggling with her groceries. I stopped and helped her bring them up the stairs into her apartment. This evening, when I got home from the gym I found a freshly baked apple pie sealed in Tupperware sitting on my doorstep with a note that said, “I used the ingredients you helped me carry to bake this. Enjoy!”

5. Today, I met the prettiest woman on a plane.

Assuming I wouldn’t see her again after we made our connections, I told her how pretty I thought she was. She

gave me the most sincere smile and said, “Nobody has said that to me in 10 years.” It turns out we’re both in our mid-30’s, never married, no kids, and we live about 5 miles away from each other. We have a date set for next Saturday after we return home.

6. Today, the homeless man who used to sleep near my condo showed up at my door wearing the business suit I gave him nearly 10 years ago. He said, “I have a home, a job, and a family now.

10 years ago I wore this business suit to all my job interviews. Thank you.”

I am sure if you think about it, you have a story like those above of your own.

These are the real treasures in life and when you are taking inventory of all that you have, be sure that you include your own stories.

So, although there is only one thing on this month’s Fun Manifesto, I hope it proves as valuable to you as it has to me. Certainly when I think about how fortunate I am to have a loving, supportive wife who is my very best friend, two great children, and a roof over my head, clothes on my back and food on my table, everything else is icing on the cake. ©

ickie Walters has worked in the staffing industry since 1994. She started as a Customer Service/ Sales Representative for a staffing company located in Greensboro. After working there for a very short amount of time, she became the top producer for the company. When an opening for a sales person became available in their High Point office, Vickie was moved from the office in Greensboro to High Point to establish new business for that location.

Vickie grew up in Asheboro and graduated from Asheboro High School. She attended Randolph Community College, graduating with an Associate’s Degree. Since she was from Asheboro, she wanted to bring Asheboro area business to the Greensboro based company. She started receiving orders from Asheboro companies. She landed a couple of large accounts, but they stipulated that they must have a local Asheboro office to work with in order to do business with her company.

Vickie approached her manager and told him that she could get the business, but he would have to open an office in Asheboro. He agreed, and she opened the office for them in 2004 on S Fayetteville Street.

Her daughter, Michelle Key, also was a graduate of Asheboro High School. She started working in the Asheboro office cleaning and occasionally filling in for the receptionist. The owner of the company recognized that Michelle was a hard worker and that she enjoyed the variety of duties she performed around the office, so he asked her to join the staff permanently. She started as a full time Customer Service Representative. Within a short period of time, she was asked to move into a recruiting position, responsible for attending job fairs, and finding quality employees throughout the county. In 2005 the office was moved to 1512 Zoo Parkway, beside Something Different Restaurant.

As the office grew, Michelle found that she really

enjoyed talking to people about what the company was all about and how using a staffing service to help fill their open positions allowed them to “try someone out” before hiring them on a permanent basis. The owner soon realized that Michelle was a natural, and needed to join the sales team.

In late May, 2007, the owner of the company decided to close the Asheboro office. He offered Vickie and Michelle positions in the Greensboro and High Point offices. Vickie no longer wanted to spend so much time commuting to work, and Michelle lived in Seagrove so it would be a very long drive for her to either location.

Michelle approached Vickie one day and asked, “Why are we doing this for someone else? Why don’t we start our own staffing service?” This was a question that Vickie had heard before from her son, her husband and several of her close friends.

After thinking it over, she approached her employer, explained to him her dilemma, and broached the subject of launching her own staffing service in Asheboro. He agreed to let her out of her employment contract with him to pursue her dream of owning her own company. Vickie and Michelle had exactly one month to come up with a name for their new company, design a logo, write a business plan, and find a bank willing to give them a loan for the start up of the business.

“Everything just fell into place,” said Vickie. “It was a fairly smooth transition.” Piedmont Staffing Solutions, Inc. opened on Zoo Parkway on July 1, 2007.

Vickie and Michelle work hard to provide staffing services to the companies of Asheboro and Randolph County. They provide companies with employment screening, which include criminal background checks, drug screening, E-Verify and skill assessments. Every employee goes through a rigorous screening process so they can match the right employee to a specific job.

They also provide customized billing reports, which provide valuable information to their clients that can be used for planning staffing needs, evaluating seasonal fluctuations and trends, as well as budget planning and projections. They carry a comprehensive liability insurance policy to protect clients from the risk of accident or loss.

Some of the staffing programs they offer are direct hire, contract employees, temporary to direct hire, long term temporary assistance, temporary and also payroll services.

They can handle any employment needs, and they save companies time and money by pre-screening job applicants.

In addition to the business, Vickie and Michelle are very involved in the community. They were among the founding members of Randolph Business Women in 2010. This networking group is for women who own their own business or are in a management position to share challenges and successes with each other. The group meets the second Thursday of each month at The Exchange on Fayetteville Street. Vickie was the New Member Director and Michelle is the current Vice President.

Last year the RBW group sponsored a “Head to Toe Fashion Show” at Pinewood Country Club to benefit Emmy Spicer. Many local businesses were involved and the evening was a huge success.

Michelle and Vickie have also held many other fundraising activities to support local charities in Randolph County.

Michelle and Vickie were beverage cart sponsors of the recent Chamber of Commerce Golf Tournament on June 19 at Pinewood Country Club.

The Golf Tournament is an annual event to support the mission of the Chamber, and Michelle and Vickie have sponsored the Beverage Cart for several years.

Vickie was featured in the Mar/ April 2011 issue of the “Business Leader Magazine,” as one of the Triad’s Top 50 Catalyst Entrepreneurs.

Vision, leadership, inspiration and philanthropic pursuits - these are among the qualities of the 2011 Class 14

of Top Catalyst Entrepreneurs. An impressive group that helps define the quality of leadership in the Triad’s private, public and non-profit sectors. An executive who continues to make an invaluable impact in her organization and community.

Michelle is highly involved with community activities and Chamber events. She served as the Chairman of the Special Events Committee, as well serving on various other committees. She lives in Seagrove with her husband and two children, Austin and Lauren. Michelle is an avid horsewoman and spends as much of her free time as she can riding horses and four wheelers.

Missy Louris is a recent addition to their staff as Front Office Manager.

She attended Randolph Community College and Brookstone College.

Missy has certifications in Customer Service, Employment Law, and Safety and Quality. She has been in the staffing industry for over fifteen years.

She works closely with the staff as well as management to ensure that clients are receiving the best possible customer service.

Briana Craven is the new Account Coordinator. She has been with Piedmont Staffing Solutions for just over six months and is quickly learning the staffing industry. She is genuinely concerned that the clients as well as the employees receive top notch service. She enjoys helping people find employment and helping companies find good employees.

Briana has two boys, Trie and Jayce.

She enjoys an active outdoor life with her boys. Most weekends you can find her riding a horse, or on her Honda sports bike.

LOCAL MUSICIANS RELEASE MUSIC VIDEO

B

ack in the early 80s, I had a penchant for music that made my parents cringe. I chalked it up to their inability to appreciate the nuances of heavy metal artists like The Scorpions, Iron Maiden and AC/DC. Fast forward to today and I find myself, as a parent, wondering what my kids find appealing about some of the music they are listening to. That is, as my parents would say, if you can call it music; I guess you know you’re getting old when. Luckily, I have fought the urge to dismiss the music my kids listen to off handedly and have discovered some great tunes because of my willingness to open my mind to new possibilities.

Recently, a local heavy metal Christian band (you read that right), Wake of Redemption, released their first music video. Since I am a lover of music and their influences were listed as some of my favorites from my formative years, I found myself wondering what exactly a heavy metal Christian band sounds like. This led me to their Facebook page (www. facebook.com/wakeofredemption) which led me to their website and finally to YouTube to watch their video.

If you appreciate the raw, impassioned, visceral sounds of loud distorted guitars, dense bass-anddrum and vigorous vocals combined with a spiritual message you will love their music. I would even go as far as saying that if you understand the distinction between the various types of metal music, you will appreciate the thrash metal undertones. Frankly, I thought combining heavy metal with Christian music would be akin to putting a loud chopper engine on a

moped, but Wake of Redemption pulls it off masterfully.

The band is comprised of local musicians Stephen Wiley (Drums/ Lead Vocals), Nick Wiley (Guitar/ Backing Vocals), Matt Hoover (Guitar) and Arthur Summerlin (Bass). Whether or not you like heavy metal, it is undeniable that these guys have real talent. In fact, I would go as far as saying they are fan-freaking-tastic which is refreshing in light of all the watered down, bubblegum sounds that masquerade as music these days.

Some of the stuff that gets radio play astounds me especially when there is real talent, like these guys, out there struggling to get a break.

Their new video, ”Mars” is outstanding and brought me back to the days when MTV actually played music videos. It was created by Reflex Productions, a local video production company, and is magnificently done.

It starts off with birds chirping and the band walking into the scene, picking up their instruments and beginning to play. You are then transported to a battlefield where a Trojan army is about to go to battle with a contingent of Vikings. The coolest part of this video is the soldiers from the two armies are played by children from the Asheboro area and their weapons are squirt guns and water balloons. The song is about the perils of worshiping false idols, specifically in this case, the mythological god of war, Mars.

he answer to this question is YES, YES, YES! The need for foster families to be as diverse as the children in foster care is critical in order for DSS to best serve each child. No two children who come into foster care are alike and all come from a broad range of backgrounds.

There is a constant need for families of different races, cultures, religious backgrounds, social classes, family compositions (i.e. single, married, blended families, families with live-in grandparents), etc. to best suit the many different children who are served through foster care. There are few foster families who are fluent in Spanish, causing a great need for bilingual families in our area.

The agency strives to place each child who comes into foster care with a family who is the absolute best fit for that child. This is often times difficult due to the lack of diversity we currently have in our foster families. When the home is not the best fit for a child many times the result is moving a child one or more times. TEACH YOUR TEENAGER HOW TO MANAGE A SUMMER SALARY

ummer jobs give teens new found freedom and money to spend. Just how well your teen handles his or her first paycheck may set a precedent for life.

Here’s some advice that may help your teen make the most of his or her summer salary and develop a solid basis for future financial success.

1. Set a Good Example. Parents should provide a good example of financial responsibility and involve their children in money management activities. It’s important that teenagers see their parents live within their means and practice sound money management -- budgeting, setting long-term financial goals, making wise purchases, saving and investing.

Demonstrate how saving helps you buy the things your family needs, rather than charging. Also, explain your investment plans and strategy.

2. Teach Them to Save and Spend Wisely. Once your teenager is receiving a regular paycheck, show them how to save and spend. In other words, help them develop a budget.

Establish three categories: essential purchases, savings, and discretionary items. Essential items you expect your teenager’s paycheck to cover may include car insurance, gas, telephone bills, or school lunches. After establishing essential expenditures, set a savings goal with your teen, but be sure money is left over for fun. Your teen will be quickly disillusioned with working if there’s no money to play with.

3. Make Saving a Priority. For successful savings, encourage your teen to define his or her financial goal, and develop a plan for saving toward that goal. By high school, every teenager should have a bank account. A savings account is best for younger teens, but older teens should know how to use a checking account.

Teach your teen how to write and record checks and how to balance statements.

4. Teach Savvy Shopping Skills.

Encourage your teen to comparison shop by checking prices with different retailers. Show them how to save money by buying generic brands or shopping at thrift shops. Make sure they grasp the concept of unit pricing so they better understand what they are getting for their money. Have him or her create an expense log showing exactly where the money is going.

Your teen may not even realize how much money is being spent on snacks, entertainment, and other activities.

This can help put spending habits into perspective and help your teen change his or her ways early on.

5. Explain the Real Cost of Credit.

before going to college and receiving hundreds of credit card offers. He or she needs to know how credit cards work and understand that late or unpaid credit card bills can affect the ability to buy a house or car in the future. Most importantly, educate your child about the hidden costs of using credit. Explain that if a purchase is made for more than what can be paid back in one month, they will be subject to interest charges that add to the cost of their original purchase.

6. Talk Taxes. Teenagers probably get their first introduction into the world of taxes when they discover their paycheck was less than expected, thanks to income tax deductions. CPAs say it’s important to be sure your child understands the responsibilities for paying taxes and, if required, filing tax returns.

Finally, it is wise to keep track of your teen’s earnings so that you have an understanding of how your child is spending that money.

W

hen we launched our magazine we wanted to offer a similar resource on a much more local basis. I felt a twinge of pride when the November 2010 cover of Our State was a story that I was working on for Asheboro Magazine, the Blessing of the Hounds in Southern Pines. I figured if they were doing a cover story on something I was also writing about, I must be on the right track.

Recently, I had the great fortune to meet Elizabeth Hudson, editor of Our State, who grew up right here in Asheboro. Her parents Phil & Susie Hudson still live in the area and she gets back to visit as often as she can.

Elizabeth attended Fayetteville Street Christian School from Kindergarten through 3rd grade, and her family lived on Salisbury Street behind the courthouse. Her dad owned a photography studio in High Point with his brother, Harris, and they worked mainly in the furniture industry. Her mom opened a craft store in 1972 called Kit ‘n Caboodle. It was located in a little yellow house across from Sir Pizza on N Fayetteville Street, close to Elizabeth’s school. Her mom later moved the store downtown to the old Hedrick Arcade Building and then again later, to the Randolph Mall, until she closed it in the early 1990s.

In 1978, her parents moved to Farmer, and she attended Farmer School on Old Highway 49 until high school. Her dad retired from photography and opened a sandwich shop, situated next to the Kit’n Caboodle in the Hedrick Arcade, called Phil’s.

In the summertime, Elizabeth would hang out in her parents’ shops, and when she grew bored or her Dad would shoo her out of the store, she would go to Scott’s bookstore next door and sit in a corner and read all the comic books she could get her hands on. Archie, Casper the Friendly Ghost, Richie Rich, she read them all. At the time, Chip Womick worked behind the counter and one day as she settled down to read, he handed her a book, A Wrinkle in Time, by Madeleine L ‘Engle, and told her it was time to start reading books instead of comics. If not for Chip Womick, she might never have discovered her love for reading.

When they lived on Salisbury Street, her grandmother’s house was situated behind theirs on S. Cox Street, and she spent a lot of time there. Her grandmother was a huge influence in her life. Her grandmother, Norva Allen Hudson, worked for the Tax Department and her grandfather was an insurance salesman for Blue Cross/Blue Shield. His passion was golf, and Elizabeth’s favorite memories of him all include him holding a golf club.

Elizabeth would cut through the backyard to get to her grandmother’s house, and they would walk to the library to check out stacks of books. In the garden behind her grandmother’s house there was a hammock and Elizabeth would sit and read for hours during the summer months, enjoying the sweet fragrance of the roses, drinking sweet tea and eating figs right off the tree planted there.

Elizabeth graduated from Southwest Randolph High School in 1988. When she was a junior, all her friends were making decisions on what college they were going to attend, but she just didn’t feel pressured to send out a bunch of applications. Her parents were supportive, but not pushy.

They wanted her to find her own way and if college wasn’t what she wanted, they were not going to push her towards it. But she started to feel like maybe she should apply, so she went to the Guidance Counselor’s office. The brochures for different schools around the state and around the country were displayed and she grabbed the first one she saw. She filled it out and mailed it off, not really even reading much about the school itself. The brochures were arranged in alphabetical order and she had just applied to Appalachian State University. She was accepted without ever visiting the school itself.

Her freshman year at Appalachian, she realized her first mistake. It was cold in Boone! When they got a snowstorm on her birthday in November, Elizabeth thought to herself, “Where AM I?” She struggled through the winter months, hating school and the weather. At the end of April, two weeks before final exams, she packed up her car and drove to her parents’ house in Farmer. “I’m done and I’m not going back.”

They didn’t give her grief, as some parents might, but supported her decision. They were entrepreneurs themselves and realized that you have to try a few things and fail before you find what you love. The only thing her Mom said to her was that if she wasn’t going to college, she needed to get a job. She went to the Zoo office and filled out an application.

They hired her to drive the tram around the park. She worked there for nine months, before deciding to go back to school – this time a little closer to home.

She took a semester of courses at Randolph Community College, before transferring her credits to the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She took to UNCG like it was made for her. It offered a solid liberal arts program, and she enrolled in the English program, taking courses from some of the most amazing writers, like Michael Parker and Fred Chappell. “I read more than I ever had, and was writing more than ever.”

She paid for college by working at a video store and at FotoOne, a photo developing mini-lab in the Randolph Mall. She worked until 9 o’clock at night and then would go home to do her homework. She graduated with a degree in English and a subdegree in Geography.

At this point, she didn’t know what career path she wanted, but she knew she wanted to be surrounded by books so she applied at the new Borders Bookstore opening in Greensboro. The testing process for this chain was very extensive. She was given three different tests, about authors and books. They wanted to make sure that the people they were hiring were not just clerks, but had an appreciation of books that would allow them to provide above average customer service to the patrons of the store.

She was hired to work in the media section of the store.

Borders encouraged all their employees to take home books and read them so they could recommend them to customers, as long as they were kept in pristine condition. This was a dream job! Elizabeth worked at Borders for two years,

surrounded by the world of books and print. One Sunday morning she was scheduled to work the register and the store was fairly quiet. Before starting her shift, she quickly browsed the shelves in the media section, looking for a magazine to read while she was at the register.

The cover of the July, 1997 issue of Our State Magazine caught her eye, out of the thousands of magazine covers to choose from. She still remembers the title and photo today, “Tomatoes: A True Summer Romance.” Having grown up in the country, Elizabeth often packed her lunch and brought it to the store with her, a tomato, 2 slices of bread and a little container of mayonnaise – fixin’s for a tomato-and-mayonnaise sandwich. It was as if those big juicy red tomatoes on the cover of the magazine were speaking directly to her. She stood at the cash register and read every word of the magazine that morning. At that time, Our State was 42 pages, saddle stitched together (stapled like Asheboro Magazine) with 40,000 subscribers. The editor wrote an article about what it was like to work at the magazine. Elizabeth decided in that moment that it sounded like the perfect place. “It was where I wanted to be.”

On her way home from work that day, she stopped at WalMart and purchased an answering machine, just in case.

She wrote a letter to the Editor of the magazine and mailed a copy of her resume with it. Then she sat back to wait.

A few days later, Lynn Tutterow, the Vice President of Our State Magazine, left a message on that new answering machine. They had received her resume and, although they didn’t have any openings in the editorial department —

Bernie Mann had just purchased the publication and the staff was minimal — they were looking for someone to answer phones in the circulation department.

Elizabeth was thrilled. She started at Our State in 1997, answering phones and opening the mail. For the year she was in the circulation department, if someone wanted to purchase a subscription or had a story idea, they likely talked to her. She got to speak to readers and find out what they loved about the magazine; she got to hear what stories they were interested in. “You cannot make a magazine without understanding the audience. You have to understand their needs before you can serve them.”

About a year later, the company created an editorial

position for her and, through hard work over the next ten years, she worked her way up to senior editor. In 2007, Mr. Mann launched a spin-off magazine, Signature, aimed at a younger, more affluent audience, and Elizabeth was promoted to editor of that publication. After 10 issues, the economy began exerting its influence and the advertising base started to drop off. Bernie made the painful decision to cut the magazine, but moved Elizabeth and her staff over to Our State.

Elizabeth loves working for the magazine, and for Bernie Mann. He is a great publisher, and an extraordinary person who runs his business not necessarily driven by money, but by people. “It’s the greatest place on earth to work,” Elizabeth says. “Disney has nothing on Our State.” Since 1997, the subscriber base has grown to 160,000 paid subscribers. “These people vote with their checkbooks every year — this is a magazine that they want to read.” An additional 20,000 are printed for newsstands and 20,000 for promotional copies.

Each year, the staff starts with a clean slate – 12 issues to fill, each averaging about 200 pages. As the story ideas flow and the pages begin to fill up, Elizabeth wishes she had 60 issues each year — there is so much in this state that is worthy of being published in the magazine. “The people who work at Our State are the most passionate, inspired people. We get to talk about why we love this place [North Carolina] every day.” ©

LETTING GO by jacquie Reininger

W

e’ve lived in our current home for almost 20 years. As happens when one settles down, one tends to procure stuff. It’s not that we intentionally gather it, but it just accumulated over time. We have souvenirs from my husband’s trips around the world. We all love to read and have several bookcases full. We have knick-knacks and craft supplies and camping gear and Christmas decorations tucked away in every possible storage space in this old home. It’s a nightmare to see the attic, or the shed. Twice, we held yard sales in attempts to clear it out. But mostly, we simply rearrange and reorganize the stuff into more efficient bundles— packing it in ever tighter.

Well, the time has come to move.

A lovely home has presented itself to us and it is a buyer’s market as our agent Waynette says! I told my friend over lunch that this move was going to give me the opportunity to start fresh. Either that, or it would kill me, I joked! It wasn’t really a joke. I know that moving can be very stressful, and I’m already quite busy. But I realize I have a choice in how to respond to the upcoming challenge, and I have decided to use it as an opportunity to grow!

This is not going to be easy. But I am enthusiastic and I know that somewhere someone needs this stuff more than I do. The Red Door Home Store is going to love me!

But first let me tell you about the last time I was trying to clear out my “closets”. Years ago I took it upon myself to begin a journey of selfinquiry. At some point in our lives, we should all review where we’ve been, take stock of where we are and refine our plans for the future. For this exploration, I chose to study the yamas 24





and niyamas of Yoga philosophy.

These are rules to help us live ethically as individuals and as members of society… they are universal guidelines that can direct us to a path of right living. Non-violence, non-stealing, non-lying, for instance, make us better citizens in our community.

So I focused on one rule at a time, explored how it applied to my life and made appropriate adjustments to aspects of my behavior in order to walk a higher path. The journey was going along quite smoothly. I grew more compassionate, more patient, more graceful towards myself and my family and acquaintances. That is until I reached the 5th Yama: Aparigraha (“non-hoarding” or “non-attachment”).

UH oh! Though I am not as bad as those hoarder reality shows, I do enjoy beautiful things, and I like to be prepared for that next project. My approach has always been that as long as there is room in which to store it, and it might come in handy one day, why not squirrel it away for the future?

I actually had to let this concept of “non-hoarding” sit on the back burner for a while before making any changes in my life. I had no idea how to begin to release my possessions. I had always thought I would save the old baby crib for my grandbabies.

And I was sure that I would need that bag of wine corks one day for a craft project! I simply didn’t know where to start! I did some more reading on the topic. What was meant by our possessions? Did the rule literally mean we need to discard the mementos in the attic? Maybe it meant for us to look inwards to see what types of thoughts or beliefs or experiences we hold onto as if they were the matrix of our many selves, holding us together? What mental and emotional baggage was

I carrying? Now here was something I could work with! I knew right away that the grudge I have been carrying against my big brother needed to be resolved! It was ages old and not serving anyone to be retained! So I called him up and we talked and cried and we let bygones be gone.

There was definitely a sense of having released a burden! So there! I had taken a step towards non-hoarding!

Moving on to the next rule, I could feel good about my continuing selfimprovement. Even though forgiving and moving on are certainly ways we can practice aparigraha, I think I actually avoided doing the literal work of letting go of my attachment to “stuff” at that time.

So here I am, years later, with closets full of even more possessions.

Like a hovering thundercloud, they do weigh upon me, and sometimes seem to stifle me. But this time I am prepared for the challenge. I have to be! I’ve begun the process of purging. I am starting small: emptying shelves and drawers and removing things I never use. The pile of things on the front porch to be donated is growing larger.

Hopefully as momentum gathers, I will be even more generous in clearing the attic and the shed. There is a sense of satisfaction when I do this work. I am encouraged.

And I can feel how this effort is making a difference in my emotional, mental and energetic houses, too. I am grateful for this opportunity to release grudges, revisit once steadfast beliefs and feel the clarity that arises when I remove that which doesn’t serve me in my life. It’s like Spring cleaning my head!

The move is going to be exciting and fun, and I can’t wait to begin anew. By the way, does anybody need a bag of corks? ©

CITY OF ASHEBORO’S SECOND ANNUAL “NATIONAL NIGHT OUT”

FOOD DRIVE CONCERT TO BENEFIT CUOC

antum Rooster, a local band, is holding a benefit concert for the Christians United Outreach Center (CUOC) on July 29th at 7:00 pm in Bicentennial Park. The Food Pantry runs dangerously low in the summer and needs our help.

Bantum Rooster members range in age from 20 to 24 years old are and most are from right here in Randolph County. Zack Beane plays lead guitar & vocals; John Phillips is on rhythm guitar, brothers Shane Morgan, on keyboards & is also the MC of the group & Christian Morgan, on drums & vocals.

Additional band members include John Chaney, from Campbell University on Bass guitar & vocals and Jimmy Platter from Fayetteville on saxophone. They have been playing together and holding the benefit concerts for six years. They are passionate about supporting the CUOC and it’s a great way for them to give back to the community.

On Sunday, July 29th bring the family down to the park at 6:15 for FREE HOTDOGS and all the trimmings.

sheboro police officers and community members will gather on Tuesday, August 7 at 6 p.m. at the First Wesleyan Church (825 Highland Street) to send the message that the community is united against crime. The event will conclude at 8:30 p.m. when participants will be asked to return home and turn on their porch lights to signify that it’s “lights-out” for crime in Asheboro.

This is a fun, familyoriented event with activities for kids and displays from the Asheboro Police and Fire Departments. Free hot dogs, sides, desserts and drinks will be served thanks to donations from area businesses.

The event is being hosted by the City of Asheboro Police Department and the Rich Avenue Crime Watch group. Crime Watch members will be speaking with attendees about how successful the program has been in their area, and the Police Department will share information about how to start a Crime Watch group.

Over the past 29 years, thousands of communities have held National Night Out events. More than 37 million people participated in last year’s celebrations, according to the NNO website. Target is the national corporate sponsor and donated generously to Asheboro’s first event. ©

DAYTIME AND NIGHTTIME HOURS

ave you ever arrived at work, sat down at your desk or cubicle and just stared at your computer for a moment trying to think of what you need to be doing?

You may glance at some post-it notes that litter your desk area or review some emails that you recently received to find some glimmer of hope of what you need to be doing. Sure, you need to work and that is a given, but many of us walk into work without a plan of what we need to accomplish that day or that week. Granted, you may have a project manager or boss who assigns you work. If not, you are left to your own devices to figure out the best way to accomplish your job.

If you find yourself in this predicament more often then not, consider using the daytime and nighttime hours approach.

The nighttime hours can be used to

plan, document, and generally catchup on items that need to be done before the next day. If you are in sales, spend the nighttime hours researching potential clients, reviewing who is in your network that can help introduce you to those potential clients, entering sales meetings notes, and creating a plan of action for the next day. I am not trying to encourage bringing a lot of work home. It is good to have a break from work and great to spend time with family and friends. For me, the time I do work at night is after my kids go to bed and my wife is reading or catching up on a few work items herself.

The daytime hours are when you execute on the plans you developed the night before. You can now call those potential clients empowered with the knowledge of your research and meet with co-workers or mentors to understand more about your market area. It is a great feeling to walk into work knowing exactly what you need to do and to finish the day with a sense of accomplishment.

There are some variations to this approach. Some might want to plan a week at a time. Others may plan for the next month or quarter, especially if they need to do a lot of travelling.

The point is to help you be more productive. Sure, there may be times when you become so busy, you don’t take the time (or make the time) to plan better. So you start your workday and realize that you have no business appointments or lunch meetings scheduled. You scramble to see who can meet last minute and probably hit a wall when no one is available on short notice. You then end up spending the rest of the day making plans for the following day so the day is not a total loss in productivity.

Remember, it’s your time, so use it as best as you can. Brian Tracy, an expert on personal effectiveness, says, “Every minute you spend in planning saves 10 minutes in execution.”

Using that ratio of planning time and execution time, just imagine how much time you can save by doing just one hour of planning. ©

My name is Jeff White, MD and I have been an oculoplastic specialist at Carolina Eye Associates for seven years. I perform cosmetic, functional and reconstructive procedures around the eyes and face. One of the most common procedures that I perform is blepharoplasty, or eyelid lift, of the upper and lower eyelids.

As we age the skin of the eyelids loses its elasticity and can start to rest on or overhang the eyelashes. This redundant tissue is often accompanied by protruding fat pockets in the upper and lower lids that can give a tired or excessively aged appearance.

To rejuvenate the upper eyelids, a blepharoplasty can be performed to remove this excess skin and give

a more alert, youthful appearance, leaving only a minimally noticeable scar. The lower lids may often be corrected through an internal approach leaving no scarring. Each patient is unique and needs a surgical plan tailored to their desires and their particular anatomy.

Prior to deciding on surgery I evaluate patients with a complete eye examination and look for other associated conditions. We discuss the patient’s goals and expectations and that we strive for a natural look after surgery. We then go through the preoperative preparation, the surgery itself and the postoperative care. After surgery patients are able to use their eyes and usually there is only minimal

discomfort. We recommend that patients avoid strenuous activity for 1-2 weeks and they may return to work in this time frame. The final results are apparent in 2-3 months.

The ideal patient for eyelid rejuvenation is someone with excess tissue around the eyes, is healthy enough for surgery, and has realistic expectations. The goal is to correct the sagging of the upper lids and the bulging fat pockets of the lower lids that give a tired appearance. If so, you may be able to get a tax credit for those expenses. Now the rules: 1. Children must be under 13 years of age while the child was at camp.

2. Parents must be working or looking for work.

3. Overnight camps do NOT qualify.

4. Whether it is a camp or for a childcare provider at your home or other facility, you will get some credit.

5. The credit can be between 20% and 35% of the qualifying expenses, depending on income.

HEALTH CARE REFORM Like it or not, health care reform has been upheld. As a result, a series of tax hikes are poised to take effect. The good news is that nothing will impact the amount you pay for 2012 taxes, filed by April 2013. However, starting January 2013, some tax will kick in.

WHAT YOU WILL SEE IN 2013: 1. Starting with your 2012 W-2, some employers will report the amount of coverage under an employer-sponsored health plan.

You will see this show up as in Box 12 as code DD. It must be said that most employers will qualify for transition relief. So don’t be surprised if it shows up on your W-2, but don’t panic if it is not there either. The big take away – it will NOT increase your tax liability if it is reported on your W-2.

2. The amount you are able to contribute to a health flexible spending account will be capped at $2,500. Previously, the cap was set by your employer.

3. The 7.5%-of-AGI floor for deducting medical expenses will jump to 10% for those under 65.

The 10% rule will not take effect for those 65 and older until 2017 4. A 2.3% excise tax on medical devices takes effect. Common

items such as glasses, contact lenses and hearing aids are exempt from the tax 5. A 0.9% Medicare surtax on singles with wages exceeding $200,000 and married couples earning over $250,000. This also includes self-employed.

6. A 3.8% Medicare surtax on unearned income for singles with income above $200,000 and married couples over $250,000.

Unearned income for this surtax includes interest, dividends, capital gains, annuities, royalties and passive rental income, but not tax-free interest or payouts from retirement plans.

WHAT YOU WILL SEE IN 2014: 1. All individuals will be required to have health insurance (Medicare & Veteran Plans count) or owe a penalty tax equal to the larger of $95 or 1% of income above the filing threshold. For families, the penalty will be capped at$285 and rise sharply for 2015 & 2016 with the top fine $2,085.

2. Health Insurance Tax Credit will kick in for those who purchase their own insurance. The amount of the credit will depend on the amount of insurance and income.

3. Firms with 50 or more full-time employees but no health plan or an insufficient health plan will owe an excise tax of $2,000 times the number of employees.

As Benjamin Franklin said in 1789 – “In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death & taxes.”

If you don’t have a library card it is simple to obtain one. All you need is your identification and your current in-state address if it doesn’t match your ID. If you have recently moved to North Carolina, just provide your address from an official document and we will sign you up.

If you’re just passing through and you need to check your email, we will issue you a temporary pass which allows you to check your email and surf the web for up to five visits.

Have you had a library card before but lost it?

No problem. We just need your ID and we can look up your account, update your information and it is usually only one dollar to replace a lost card. If you’ve lost your card more than once, it is five dollars but just think about all you have access to: free internet, books, ebooks, language learning software, small engine repair help and so much more.

If you are looking for a classic novel or biography for your summer reading assignments we have it. If you know which author you are looking for, we can do a search for you from any of our seven branches. If it isn’t in our building, we will request it for you and you will have it within

DON’T FEAR THE KNEE REPLACEMENT

’m usually known as “the back therapist” or “the back guy” but I also have 20 years of experience treating post-surgical knee and hip replacements. I love watching people for the way they walk. And of course when I see someone walking with a limp or painful gait, I have to ask what’s wrong. Many times the reply is “my doctor says I need a knee replacement, but I just dread the surgery” or “I have a friend who had knee replacement surgery and they had a terrible time.” I understand the reluctance to undergo such an invasive surgery but you simply cannot allow your entire state of health to deteriorate because of a single joint. Do your research, pick a good surgeon, get good physical therapy

Therapy will take approximately eight weeks. You will have 2 to 3 weeks of home health physical therapy, where the therapist comes to your home, followed by 4 to 5 weeks of out-patient therapy in a clinic.

During therapy, the initial focus will be on decreasing the pain and swelling while at the same time keeping sufficient motion in the knee so that function is not lost. As time and therapy progress, less emphasis will be placed on managing the post- surgical pain, inflammation and swelling and more emphasis will be placed on increasing the range of motion and strength of the knee. Lastly, the therapist will assist you in returning to an active lifestyle for everyday function: walking, climbing steps, and riding a bike in addition to specific exercises that you do at home.

I am proud of the protocols I have developed over the 20 years of seeing thousands of patients. My methods are efficient in that I can return someone to a pain free level of healthy mobility in the fewest visits with the least amount of pain. My methods do not rely on “pushing through pain”, its simply not necessary. Instead, I rely on gentle consistency of therapeutic activity so the knee gets what it needs but it gets it in metered doses so an optimal balance is struck between allowing the knee to heal but yet challenging so that progress is made.

drag you down into disability. And the good news with a hip replacement is that the post-surgical therapy is quite easy. However, there are three positions you cannot put your into called “hip precautions” that you must observe so the hip does not come out of its new socket until the hip has healed. This is usually about 8 weeks, and then you are back to an active daily routine.

So don’t fear the knee replacement.

ne evening a father and daughter enjoyed peach shortcake in a local’s diner crowded with tourists. Seated nearby was a mommy with a toddler. As dinner was served the little girl erupted into tears, complaining of a hurt wrist -- but she wouldn’t show her wrist. Her mortified mommy consoled her, but the crying became louder.

The father and daughter tried distracting the little girl.

Their distraction failed and the toddler’s crying became a wailing chant, “I want to go home.” Quickly, a doggy bag was organized.

As the mommy and toddler left, the father and daughter scanned the restaurant and saw sympathetic, understanding eyes, and relief, too. Few people take pleasure in the pain of others, thank God. When the pain of other’s hurts us, we feel empathy. When those we love suffer they need us for comfort and support, like a toddler

needs a mommy. When we suffer, we find our living God in the loving arms and eyes of others.

A kind word helps those who suffer. A hug. A look. A smile. A visit. A hand held. A prayer. A call. A card. A text. Even when words fail, what remains is the kindness of showing we care. It’s not so much what we say, it is what we do. A little loving kindness lightens the burdens of fear and loneliness.

Let’s Pray: Dear God we pray with loving kindness for those who are hospitalized or bedridden or lonely. May our arms, our words, our eyes, and action be healing to them or let loving others hold us. Amen. ©

And right in the middle of doing all this, I’m busy growing our second child as well. I believe there is nothing better for the soul than laughter, love, and lots of fun. Motherhood has brought so much joy to my life and I look forward to sharing a few moments of laughter, learning, and challenges from the eyes of a mother with you. As a Randolph County native, I hope to bring you a “home grown” perspective on raising a family in our multifaceted local community.

However, since I have spent the past few weeks on vacation, I drew my inspiration from the changing dynamics of a family vacation when a young child is involved.

Is This Still a Vacation?

Here’s the scene: everyone in the family takes a week off work to go on a family beach vacation. Sounds wonderful, doesn’t it? You know, the perfect relaxing beach vacation with your toes in the sand and surf, catching some rays, and leaving all your responsibilities behind. However, the once do-whatever-you-want-whenyou-want style vacation has flown out the window. Why the change, you may ask? Well, it’s as if we have left one job to come work on another. What is the task? Our new job for the week is… a toddler. A full-fledged, curious, walking, talking, running, tripping, notafraid of anything toddler. And this, my 40

friends, is how a vacation becomes a vacation no longer.

Take a step into our “preparation conversation” before heading out to the beach one morning.

“Honey, do we really need to lug all this to the beach?”

“Yes, honey. He needs all of it. I promise you.”

Cooler full of Capri Suns and lots of water? Check.

Wagon overflowing with fifty beach toys? Check.

Ten umbrellas? Check.

A ridiculous amount of snacks?

Check.

A change of Swimmies, swim trunks, rash guard shirt, and beach hat? Check.

Plenty of SPF 50 for multiple applications? Check.

Beach chairs? Check.

“Never mind, who are kidding? We don’t need those anymore.”

For all parents of small children out there… does this sound remotely familiar?

During our beach vacations over the past two years, this is pretty much what we sound like as we are packing up the wagon to take the hike to the beach with our little boy.

And in the back of my mind on our trek to the sandy beaches, I am always thinking to myself, “Why is it that such a tiny human being requires so much stuff?”

If you are a parent then you completely understand the thought running through my mind and you also understand this next statement.

Taking a toddler on a beach vacation is NOT a vacation. It’s work.

It’s a lot of work.

Once a toddler is added to the mix, your relaxing vacation becomes a sandy, busy, wet, even more sandy, sweaty, did I mention sandy, constant play time. Gone are the days of lounging in my beach chair, consumed by my favorite book plot, topped off with an icy cold beverage in my cup holder.

And all you families out there know it doesn’t just affect Mommy. It affects the whole family. My husband, sisters, mom, dad, cousins, aunts and uncles seem to rearrange their vacation for our little toddler too. Everyone must pitch in to carry some of the load out to the beach that comes along with a toddler. Our beach time must coincide with his “awake time” and we must go back inside for his “nap time.” Our dinner plans must match up with his “happy time” because who wants to take a fussy child out in public? If you dare to live on the edge and endure a 45-minute table wait, ordering time, food preparation time, and by the time the food is brought to your table, you’ve got a full-on melt down on your hands, then everyone is miserable.

So yes, everything on our vacation is carefully timed and calculated to ensure optimal “happy toddler” time.

Because you know that a toddler is capable of flipping his/her switch on and off at the drop of a sippy cup!

Okay, so maybe I am exaggerating just a tad. But I am telling the truth, aren’t I? The hilariously honest truth.

For us, beach vacations aren’t what they used to be; however, I wouldn’t trade them for anything in the world.

While, yes, I once spent all my time on the beach diving into the plot of my latest beach read and/or analyzing how much time I spent on “my front side” versus “my back side”, those are now long-gone-thoughts of the past. It is no longer about me, or my plans, or if I got enough sun for the day.

It is now about showing my son the wonderful creations on the coast and

seeing it all through his newly exposed eyes. I used to sit up on the shore and take in all its beauty, but never really dig my hands in and get dirty to feel it, learn it, and get excited about it. Now, chasing my curious toddler around the wide, vast open beach, jumping waves, riding on the boat, and taking early morning walks are honestly so much more exciting when I view our change in scenery through the eyes of my innocent toddler.

Through the eyes of my little boy I have come to love a few things I haven’t noticed in many years: How exciting are the little baby waves that come crashing upon the shore? They make for a fun “jump the tiny wave game” over and over again.

How exciting is the search for sea shells to collect in his bucket?

How exciting are the sand fiddlers that you catch in your hand while digging through the shallow surf?

How exciting are the small little sand creatures that can be found everywhere you look?

How exciting is it to ride on a boat in the open water? To feel the breeze through your hair? To feel the waves splash up into the boat? To just feel the sand between your toes?

And most importantly, how exciting is it to lick all the salt water off your hands?

“No sir, we do not drink the salt water,” could have been heard repeatedly if you hung around us long enough.

Basically, my point is that while our family vacations have changed, (and I’m not sure my youngest sister is happy about the prep time it takes to get out to the beach anymore) they have changed for the better. While they have definitely become busier and more involved, they have become simpler. Family vacations have become exactly that: family vacations. Having a toddler in the bunch affects everyone.

hungry time, his play time, etc. It is a group effort to get out to the beach, take turns playing on the beach, take a boat ride, get ready for dinner, and plan after-dinner activities.

We literally all work together until his bedtime. And then we crash. And we crash hard. But it is so worth it when that blonde headed, blue eyed, little sweet heart wakes up the next morning with that big toothy grin and melts all our hearts once again.

And we don’t mind the shift in vacation tradition because a child just loves the basics, don’t they? We really don’t have to do anything fancy to impress him. He is content to just be a “nakey boy” on our dock, with a pretend fishing rod in his hand, while becoming enamored with all the water/sand creatures down below us. He doesn’t care about the “cutest swim trunks” or the “SPF 50 Ralph Lauren Polo Rash Guard shirt” I bought him for our summer time fun. He just cares about holding our hands

and exploring the great outdoors and being close to the water with all our friends and family in tow. And isn’t that really what family beach vacations are all about? Just being together? Keeping it simple? We are the only ones that feel the need to glitz & glam it all up. So maybe we should all become more child-like in our mindsets and just do the simple things we love with the ones we love.

And then, maybe we will see the exciting, new world through the eyes of a busy, curious toddler once again. And yes, we will most likely find ourselves more tired at the end of the day and in great need of a nap, but isn’t it then when we can say, we made the most out of every single day with the ones we love?

So even if I won’t get my do-whatever-I-want-when-I-want vacation for another eighteen years (or more) maybe our busy, exhausting, new family vacation transformation was exactly what we needed. ©

fter School Fun Club begins Wednesday, August 22 for City Schools and Thursday, August 23 for County Schools!

The After School program is for students in grades K-5 and gives parents the comfort of knowing their children are in a safe, supervised and structured environment with a multitude of activities to keep them engaged both mentally and physically. The YMCA offers pickup from Lindley Park Elementary, Guy B. Teachey Elementary, Donna Lee Loflin Elementary, Charles W. McCrary Elementary and Southmont Elementary and operates daily

until 6pm. The After School Fun Club provides participants with homework assistance, devotions, new computer learning center, new 2400 sq ft classroom, new Teen Center, new Splash Pad features swimming, field trips, weekly youth fitness classes, gymnasium, arts & crafts, playground, sports, games and much more. HOW LONG BEFORE MY INGROWN TOENAIL HEALS?

h, that painful ingrown toenail… when will it heal?

Answering the question of “When will my ingrown toenail heal?” is a bit more involved than a simple number of days. Consideration of several factors must occur before a definitive answer is given and even then, the length of time it takes to heal may vary from person to person.

THE SEVERITY Healing of an ingrown toenail depends upon the severity of the condition of your toenail. For example, if you have just begun to feel tenderness or soreness in and around your toenail, there are immediate steps to take to promote healing in just a few days. If ingrown toenails are treated before infection occurs, care at home may be all that is necessary for healing.

As soon as you realize you are having problems, take the following steps: • 3-4 times daily, soak your foot in

warm water • Keep your foot dry at all other times • Gently lift the edge of your ingrown toenail from its position and insert cotton between the skin and your nail. Change the cotton daily.

• Only wear shoes with adequate room for the toes. You may want to wear sandals until the ingrown nail is better.

• Ibuprofen or acetaminophen can be taken for relief of pain.

• If the condition of the toenail worsens, or there is no improvement within 2-3 days consult your podiatrist.

If your ingrown toenail is more severe or has been troubling for a number of days, infection may be present. It is important at this time to see your podiatrist.

THE CAUSE Ingrown toenails are often the cause of wearing shoes that are too tight, or incorrect trimming of the nails. Make sure to choose and wear shoes with adequate toe room. Trim your nails straight across at the edge of the toe without rounding on the sides.

memorable meal. I remember having dinner with friends in a local restaurant and how delighted we were when our food arrived. We oohed and aahed over the artful presentation, which added an unexpected and exciting dimension to our eating experience.

We savored the food with our eyes before we even lifted our forks! So many levels of enjoyment are available to us when we are willing to pause for just a moment and savor each aspect of our experience.

Beyond seeing our food, there’s an aromatic aspect. While slicing peaches and cantaloupe from the local farmer’s market, I noticed the sweet fruity scents made my mouth water with anticipation. Then came the best part.

Tasting; allowing the juicy sweetness of the fruit to fill my mouth and excite my taste buds felt like the fulfillment of summer’s promise. What an amazing time of the year; the season of earth’s abundance. A time to savor all that nature — the sun, the clouds and rain, the soil — and our local growers, provide.

The culmination of our capacity to fully experience— to savor our food as it begins to nourish our physical bodies — is found here, in our sense of taste.

This is where we, in North America, also begin to touch, or feel, our food.

(In cultures where people eat with their hands, feeling the food begins with the sense of touch in the fingers.) We become aware of the texture; whether what we are eating is soft & slippery like a piece of ripe melon, hard & crunchy, like a fresh apple, or soft & chewy like a rich dark chocolate brownie. If we truly savor our food, this is where our taste buds and the food they encounter create a symphony of delight.

According to the MS Word dictionary, savor is defined in the following ways: 1) to enjoy something unhurriedly; 2) to relish something.

Can you honestly recall the last time you appreciated the moment of eating something so much that you recognized it as a truly pleasurable experience?

What might our lives be like if we took time to savor each moment? To sit down with friends and loved ones, and truly appreciate each other? If we could commit to living our lives this way, starting with one day a week — perhaps starting with one small meal — might we deepen our experience and satisfy our deeper hunger for connection?

How much greater might our sense of satisfaction be if we became present to each moment we’re alive? If we’re willing to do this, to simply stop our multi-tasking ways and focus on what’s right in front of us — whether it’s the ticking of the clock on the wall, the colors of the books on our shelves, or the beating of our heart — this moment becomes the only moment there is.

Friends of mine have a clock on their kitchen wall that simply says NOW where the numbers usually are. No matter how rushed you feel, no matter what’s going on in your life, what would happen if you simply paused for a moment and allowed yourself the experience of Now? Try it.

If you’re willing to try it — willing to drop all the lists and pressures you feel even for a moment — notice what happens. Do your shoulders loosen and drop away from your ears? Does your breath slow? How does your relationship to food change if you bring this kind of attention into your meal? Into your next bite?

In the midst of such a diverse and often hectic seeming world, in the face of all of our activities and responsibilities, there is one thing we can all do. We can catch our breath, stop, and simply savor this moment.

1ST ANNUAL RANDOLPH RAMBLE OPEN STUDIO TOUR

T

he First Annual Randolph Ramble Open Studio Tour will be held on October 20-21, 2012. You are invited to explore and delve into an array of original art created by local artists while enjoying the fall colors of October in Central North Carolina. Visitors will take a Free Self-Driving Tour through the beautiful rural scenery of Randolph County to visit local artists’ studios.

The Randolph Ramble Open Studio Tour, sponsored by the participating artists and the Randolph Arts Guild, spotlights a diverse selection of art by regional artists in the Randolph County area. The tour promotes the distinctive talent of each artist, and in turn underlines the creativity within our broader community. The participating artists will display their work in their own studios as well as at group locations where you can view their original creations and possibly watch a demonstration by the artist!

Each studio will have art for sale so we invite you to keep your holiday gift list in mind. There will be a wide variety of unique gifts affordably priced along with larger pieces for the art collector.

Studios will be open for the self-guided driving tour from 10 am to 5 pm on Saturday and from 1 pm to 4 pm on Sunday. This tour is free and open to the public – look for the blue balloons at each location! In addition, there will be an opening reception on October 19 from 6-8 pm at the Moring Arts Center in Asheboro, where the participating artists will exhibit a sampling of what will be available through the tour.

I HAVE NEVER HAD THE PLEASURE OF REVIEWING A NEW RELEASE. ALL THE REVIEWS I’VE WRITTEN IN THE PAST HAVE BEEN INFLUENCED BY RESEARCH AND REVIEWS WRITTEN BY OTHERS. PART OF THE FUN OF REVIEWING WINE IS SEEING HOW MY REVIEW STACKS UP AGAINST THE “PROS.” I ALSO LIKE TO SEE IF MY SENSES PICK UP THE SAME SUBTLE NUANCES AS THEIRS. FOR THIS MONTH, I CAN DO NONE OF THESE THINGS BECAUSE THE WINE I AM REVIEWING, 2009 HEAVYWEIGHT OLD VINE ZINFANDEL, WAS JUST RELEASED IN APRIL OF THIS YEAR AND IF ANYONE HAS WRITTEN ANYTHING ABOUT IT, I HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO FIND IT. f you did not read my review on the 2008 Heavyweight Purple Petit Sirah in the May 2011 edition of Asheboro Magazine, visit our website (asheboromagazine. com), click on the previous editions tab and read the review on page forty-two. It will give you an excellent background on my feelings about the Heavyweight brand. For those who don’t go back and read it, suffice it to say that, to date, the 2008 Heavyweight Purple has been my absolute favorite bottle of wine.

I am also very fond of big, bold, juicy, jammy petit syrahs. In order of preference, I will drink a petit syrah first, a merlot second and a nice zinfandel third.

When Jen, purveyor of fine wines at Lumina Wine and Beer, introduced me to Heavyweight’s Zinfandel, my eyes lit up. The prospect of a Zinfandel made by my favorite wine maker made me giddy to say the least. I felt like a little boy in a candy store or, perhaps, like a big boy in a wine shop. It was fairly crowded at Lumina that evening and I bumped into more than my fair share of patrons (luckily, I didn’t knock anyone over) as I followed Jen to the bar to get a glass of this new and exciting wine. I must have seemed like a wino who hadn’t had a drink in a while because my hands

were literally shaking as the first sip teased my taste buds.

After writing wine reviews for any length of time, new adjectives become hard to find, especially those that relate to wine. I thought about writing this article as though I was a boxing commentator and using phrases like uppercut, knockout and combination, but I thought that would be too predictable and even a little too kitschy. Normally, I would have thrown caution to the wind and done it anyhow, but I didn’t want to detract from the absolute masterpiece that is the 2009 Heavyweight Old Vine Zinfandel. One could easily get the wrong impression from the label and consider this wine, with all the other Heavyweights, more about marketing and less about being a serious contender (my apologies…I couldn’t help myself). If Ads Wines’ (makers of Heavyweight wines) blatant marketing ploy with their label design has prevented you from trying a bottle of Heavyweight in the past, I hope this review changes your perspective.

The Heavyweight brand is part of the Scotto family’s Heritage line.

The Scotto family has been in the wine business for five generations.

They are known for their Villa Armando wine which is one of the oldest wine brands in the United

States. According to their website (adswine.com) over 200,000,000 glasses of Armando Villa Wine have been served over the years. To say the Scotto family knows wine is akin to saying Cassius Clay (Muhammad Ali) knew how to box (there I go again). There is no doubt in my mind that the Heavyweight brand was developed by the Scottos because they are Heavyweights in their respective wine-making divisions.

And, I might add, I think their wine, marketing, and labels rock!

The 2009 Heavyweight Old Vine Zinfandel is simply scrumptious. Like many of the Heavyweight wines, it is actually a blend containing 82% Zinfandel, 14% Syrah and 4% Mourvedre. It is bold and unabashed. It is fruit forward with a long finish. It is, dare I say, perfectly

balanced. And it is versatile, adaptable and can go toe-to-toe with any Zinfandel with a pure pedigree.

I’d even go as far as saying the Syrah and Mourvedre create a taste profile that puts most Zinfandels, which can be hit or miss, to shame.

What else needs to be said about this bottle of wine? If you have passed on Zinfandels in the past, you need to revisit them with this wine. It is, without a doubt, the best Zinfandel (blend or otherwise) I have ever had the pleasure of tasting.

And as the label suggests, “whether you’re ringside, by the bar, or at the table, you will appreciate these brisk berry and spice flavors and mild oak accents.” The only thing I like better than slick marketing is slick marketing that tells it like it is. The long and the short of it is that you

will not be disappointed with this bottle of wine. And although I would caution anyone on any new release, the 2009 Heavyweight Old Vine Zinfandel is a real contender and will go the distance (OK, I am done with the boxing metaphors).

Naturally, you can find this wine at Lumina Wine and Beer at a price point that is not only palatable but pleasurable, which makes for a great combination (I had to get one more jab in). Because this wine’s heritage is Italian, I would suggest having it with pizza, eggplant parmesan or spaghetti bolognaise. However, like many of the wines I review, this Heavyweight is flexible enough to weigh in with just about any dish or antipasto. Any way you serve it, this wine “floats like a butterfly and stings a bee.” ©

2013 ZOO SOCIETY TRIPS HIGHLIGHT COSTA RICA, HAWAII, CHINA, GALAPAGOS ISLANDS Story by Tom Gillespie, NC Zoo staff

rom photography and bird watching in the tropics to volunteering in a Chinese panda breeding center to a trip to the enchanted Galapagos Islands, the North Carolina Zoological Society will offer guided trips in 2013 for every lover of the natural wonders around us.

Next year’s Society trips additionally include family adventures to Yellowstone and Grand Tetons national parks and a customized California tour that includes the San Diego Zoo and Yosemite National Park.

The Zoo Society started these trips more than 25 years ago, primarily as a benefit for Zoo Society members who wanted to travel with small groups of like-minded people and experience first-hand the plant and animal species and ecosystems they saw represented at the N.C. Zoo. Six major trips will highlight the 2013 schedule: Guests can begin the year with an adventure to the tropical grandeur of Costa Rica with national awardwinning photographer Tom Gillespie, Jan. 18-25. Stops will include bird watching and photography at Braulio Carrillo and Tortuguero national parks and Tirimbina Biological Reserve.

Ranging from a high-altitude cloud forest to a tropical lowlands rainforest, Braulio Carrillo maintains one of the highest levels of biodiversity in Costa Rica and provides a unique snapshot of ancient ecological conditions.

the Costa Rican shore is abundant with sea turtle-nesting beaches. The park’s extensive network of freshwater creeks and lagoons are home to seven species of river turtles, spectacled caiman, southern river otters, crustaceans and more than 50 species of freshwater fish.

Grab your flowered shirts and sandals for the second trip, a Pacific-island adventure to Hawaii March 7-13.

Stops include the Maui Ocean Center (the largest tropical reef aquarium in the Western Hemisphere), whale watching, the Kealia Pond National Wildlife Preserve, snorkeling, catamaran sailing and much more.

China beckons guests May 12-25 to the third trip, with stops at the Great Wall; Xian, the eastern terminal of the Silk Road and the site of the famous Terracotta Warriors of the Qin Dynasty; Shanghai, China’s most populous city; and the Bifengxia Panda Breeding Centre, where guests can volunteer to care for and work with pandas.

For those travelers who like to stay closer to home, the Society’s Wild West adventure, July 1-8, might be just the ticket. The trip will immerse the guests in the splendor of Yellowstone and Grand Tetons national parks; then it’s on to Ucross, Wyoming, where guests can fulfill those dreams of becoming a cowhand when they work on a dude ranch.

It’s on west to California for the fifth trip, Oct. 15-25.

Guests will visit the heart of the Golden Bear State with stops in San Diego and the San Diego Zoo; San Juan Capistrano, best known for the annual migration of the cliff swallows that reputedly migrate each year from Argentina to the mission there; Los Angeles and the Monterey Bay Aquarium--with an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour; Yosemite National Park; and, finally, San Francisco.

The highlight of this year’s travel schedule is a two-week journey to Machu Picchu, Peru, often referred to as the “Lost

City of the Incas” and perhaps the most familiar icon of the ancient Inca World; and the Galapagos Islands, crown jewel of the natural world and one of the few places left on the planet where the footprint of human presence is kept to a minimum. The Galápagos archipelago is worldrenowned for its unique and fearless wildlife--particularly the giant tortoises, but guests will also encounter sea lions, penguins, marine iguanas and a variety of bird species on their cruise onboard the Galapagos Legend.

THE STARS AND MOON ARE HIDING BEHIND THE CLOUDS, BUT THE BEAUTY OF NATURE IS STILL SO BRIGHT.
