Statement of Interest: Ashely Waugh My name is Ashely Waugh, I am a senior in my fourth year of high school, at I.E. Weldon secondary school. When I am home and not doing school work, I enjoy drawing, painting, and jewelry making. My interests help me stay positive, motivated, and relaxed, this is because I get to express myself, and put how I'm feeling into a piece. Having art as an interest is very useful for architecture, having the skill and talent required to achieve the desired look and having a unique and creative perspective is very usful. I am not only motivated by art, but also by my past experiences with family; I enjoy spending time with my family and friends, and because I was adopted at a later age of fifteen, I try to make the people around me happy/proud. Having these past experiences, with my biological and adopted family, has not only caused me to be motivated, but to also have a unique and different perspective. Having these past experiences helped build character, I am more understanding and observant than most people, which is good in social situations, and teamwork! Another interest I have is my part-time job. I work at Subway, as a sandwich artist, I have been working there since august 26, 2019; I usually work eleven to sixteen hours a week, but recently with Covid-19, and the store hours being shortened for winter, I currently only work three hours a week. Having a job, even if it is part-time, shows that I can take on multiple things at once, and balance my education, hobbies/art, social life, and part-time job. It sounds simple, but there is a lot of effort and skill that is needed to achieve a balance between everything, it is useful for university because it shows I am hard working, and can be independent. I am also interested in my education, I am proud of the work that I do, I enjoy doing Mathematics, especially trigonometry; I enjoy doing work because I like testing myself and giving myself chances to succeed/change. Enjoying the work is great because it helps with motivation, and it helps me improve/grow and become more intelligent. For my education, I am currently attending I.E.Weldon and will be graduating I.E. Weldon in the year 2021, I hope to attend and graduate Laurentian University in the undergraduate architecture science program. After graduating from the program, I want to work for an architecture firm, while working, I would be saving my money to start my own firm/business, designing pieces for clients and companies. This would be my first time attending university, and I would be grateful to attend such an organized, and positive university. I would like to attend Laurentian University because I enjoy the location, I appreciate the funding for current and past crown wards, and the great quality of the university, programs, and staff. Currently, with Covid-19 it has been a struggle, trying to adjust to the new time periods, but with positivity, motivation, and skill, I have not been falling behind and doing quite well. At I.E. Weldon

secondary school, the courses are currently in-class for five business days, six hours a day, for twenty-two days of that course, due to the restriction of time after school, my marks have been lower then I hoped and worked for, there is a lot of room for improvement, which I intend to improve while attending Laurentian University. Doing school through a global pandemic shows that I am a strong individual, who can adjust to situations. I am very grateful for having the opportunity to apply to Laurentian University. As a past crown ward from the Children's Aid Society, I appreciate the opportunities I am given. I was born into a poor family, where we had so little income, we had to get food from charities and food banks. By the time I was ten, my parents broke up, and my two brothers and I went with our mother, she fell apart, she started doing extreme drugs, and didn't care much about my brothers and I. My lifestyle was very negative, for two years I lived with my abusive brothers, and my mother who was never home. When I was twelve, I was put into the foster care system, and at the age of fifteen, I was adopted by my foster family. I love my family, but not being there as long as their other biological and other adopted children, causes me insecurity of not being good enough, it feels like a competition with my siblings, but I use it as motivation, to try and earn their love, to make them proud. I have worked very hard to change, I used to not care for school, be bullied with no friends, lack interest in anything, and not care for others. I am thankful I got the opportunity to improve/challenge myself, and I hope I can continue to become a better and stronger individual at Laurentian University!
