NIC

NATURE INTERPRETATION CENTRE

“Preservation, and furthering of knowledge is not just a matter of what material has been presented but also how”. The Nature Interpretation Centre - N.I.C - was designed to articulate the various environmental endeavors in the designing.

Keeping true to the ethos of the building, its execution uses recyclable material - cast earth, and bamboo.

The structure of the building itself is a large pavilion with earth walls and bamboo roofs.

Reconstituted bricks used for the execution of the building become a symbol of the enviromental concerns that it represents.

This binds and restricts young minds and induces unidirectional thought process. Instead the studio should be a boundless space that students mould according to their requirements and daily functioning. This encourages them to achieve unique forms sacrosanct to their individual interpretation of various assignments.

Similarly the building is designed on no precise concept, (but is an extrapolation of metaphorical instances we faced at our institutes) teaching them: •

Idiosyncratic Spatial Interpretation : The eccentric planning, perplexed internal structure and haphazard exterior appearance is all developed from a very simple plan, a satire satisfying the inquisitive nature of young minds that the best architecture is that, which is most comfortable for its inhabitants.

Adaptability : Each day they learn to configure and define their own comfort, hence learning to implement the same in their work Characteristic thinking : Significant for innovation Interaction : Evolution of innovation Lessons on materials : Emphasis on practical knowledge, construction technology and build-ability of each design- the metaphoric incident characterizing the building expression Respect for Nature : Through Sustainable engineering design

The Indian Institute of Technology is a name that is synonymous with academic excellence . These institutes have produced one of the best think tanks and innovators in the country. Therefore it becomes imperative that these environments are carefully crafted such that they become seats for interactive learning Established in the year 2009, the second phase for IIT Mandi is proposed to be constructed over a proposed zone of 48000 sq.m. Academic and Housing for Students and staff are proposed to be made functional post this segment of construction.

A.P.J ABDUL KALAM SCIENCE CITY CONCEPT PROPOSAL

There are three overriding issues of importance that is raised by the brief which our proposal addresses. The first is to do with integration in the city, how can a building of this scale engage the surrounding residential low rise neighborhood with which it is situated?

More over what is the right image to portray for a city of science in the context of Patna? Our approach is to design a city within a city, a museum that is a collection of forms that is analogous to the city as a whole. Our architecture does not yell “technology” rather it embodies the

latest principles for building sustainably.

It strives to be a living part of the city that is an exemplar for industry and the community.

Our proposal fills spaces with natural light and and landscape, making nature a constant companion for the visitor.

The second concern is for a clear and simple organisation that makes is a pleasure to learn. Our proposal has all exhibits on the same floor and centralises the circulation to make it easy to reach every space. Unlike other museums around the world, the visitor will not have to pass through any other exhibit or climb any escalators to reach

The third concern is for a sustainable way of building that integrates solutions into the core of its architecture and landscape design. Our ambition is for this to be an exemplary project for the region that can nurture new industries and ways of building.

ORGANISATIONAL CLARITY To make a simple and clear visitor experience for the museum all the exhibition halls are located on the same floor in large flexible halls (1). Circulation between different exhibition zones is centrally located around a Grand Court meaning all spaces are equally accessible and the visitor can choose the route they wish to circulate (2).

INTEGRATION WITH THE CITY The design breaks down the large mass of the building (1) into a collection of smaller boxes which are composed into a family of forms (2). Sun path dictates orientation of main openings. Landscape is experienced from every point in the museum by way of courtyards (4).

SUSTAINABLE PROJECT The project uses integrates a sustainable way of thinking in order to limit its impact on the planet and to improve local environmental conditions. We have a achieved a net zero energy building that covers all of the operational energy requirements through on site solar and wind power. Water is collected and recycled making it completely self sufficient. Through ecologically sensitive planting, soil decontamination, and local drainage schemes the design will promote a better urban environment for the surrounding residents.

DHILLON FARMHOUSE SUSTAINABLE ABODE

The sustainable residence is designed for a couple going into near retirement who plan to spend their time surrounded by nature and an unperturbed domestic lifestyle, punctuated only with occasional visitors. The husband is an aviator, while the wife is the green-thumbed partner in the relationship who already runs the place as an organic farm. Planned intensely around the requirements of the inhabitants, the design allows unobstructed movement from one space to another and views to the outside

landscape. The windows allow ample natural light. The double storey vaulted structure makes for an interesting natural geometry set into an earth berm (along the west protecting the long face from the harsh summer sun of the arid region).

The exposed north and south facades are lined with latticed terracotta screens relieving the summer sun. Integrating traditional Indian architectural principles with an international lifestyle, the

residence is designed to be a courtyard house. The courtyard planning helps to regulate temperature in the interior spaces. Verandahs and terraces opening out towards the lake and the landscaped area enhance thermal comfort by creating a buffer zone around the house.

RETREAT AT KABINI THE LAP OF NATURE

Located on the edges of the Nagarhole National park, the riverside plot was already a home to about a 100 coconut trees, meadows of touch-me-knots, custard apple boundaries and marigold shrubs. Wanting to hold on to the natural wealth of the land, the idea was to accommodate humble villas suiting the quaint, damp yet breezy weather of the South Indian tropics. Limiting the numbers meant limiting requirement of facilities, ensuring minimum encroachment of the nature. It also meant the design could dwell on the luxury aspect of the facility better, along with engaging with sustainable materials and construction methods to camouflage not just the resultant habitat but also balance the infrastructure towards minimum intrusion to the forest and river surrounding.

The built areas were retained farthest from the river; these included the common reception and restaurant areas as well as the segregated villas and duplex rooms. All rooms were oriented to face the river to the east, a set of villas were equipped with features like a luxury outdoor shower and individual pools.

Natural trails led down to elements that could function without

distressing the natural surroundings like private dining pergolas, camping tents and spa which are temporary constructions in bamboo and canvas.Though the area allowed for spreading of infrastructure and facilities, conscious efforts were made to leave the riparian corridor along the river untouched, which naturally added to the appeal of the forest to the compound backdrop.

The complex is built in natural local random rubble granite and walls in earth, along with strong accents of the Carnatic region making appearance in the form of thatch roofing, reclaimed timber pillars and corbels.

The key being sustainability, the complex is designed for net zero- energy and water. This is accomplished by means of PV Solar of equivalent capacity as the requirement and a Soil biotechnology-based sewage treatment plant. This is coupled with segregated waste management, rain water harvesting, passive design for ventilation and cooling, and Zero Budget Natural Farming.

SUSTAINABLE HOUSE The project is located in 28 chemin pink – cantley, quebec. It is a large rural site with large neighbouring lots (spaced from neighbours). We designed a sustainable - passive abode which is net positive and displays a hybrid system of modular construction.

Planning with the principle’s of only constructing what is required and reducing the carbon footprint with every design decision, the residence is compact and very functional.
