Ashbury College, Junior School The Junior School distinguishes itself by providing an academic environment that inspires and challenges students as individuals. It is our aim to enable every student to develop in the areas of academics, athletics, arts, co-curriculars, community and leadership skills. Clear standards and guidelines in work, sport, dress and behaviour help to achieve these goals.
• I will not use abusive language. • I will always speak truthfully. • I will not engage in disruptive or annoying behaviour. • I will actively participate in classroom activities. • I shall not shy away from asking for help when necessary. • I will wear my school uniform proudly.
As a Round Square member school, Ashbury College’s core values closely align with those developed by Kurt Hahn, founder of Round Square and Outward Bound. Hahn’s philosophy of learning through experience is at the core of Ashbury’s pedagogical approach to teaching and learning; the ultimate goal is to provide Junior School students with leadership opportunities where they must take responsibility. The IDEALS of Round Square – Internationalism, Democracy, Environmentalism, Adventure, Leadership, and Service are woven into the daily life of a Junior School student and are demonstrated through charitable and fundraising events, field trips to museums and outdoor adventure sites, and our connection to the wonderful resources of the National Capital Region.
Academic Excellence
Community
Our challenging, broad-based academic program, which promotes critical thinking and creativity, prepares students for success in university and in life.
Ashbury is a caring community offering a safe, structured environment in which students and staff are encouraged to reach their potential. The spirit of Ashbury—characterized by enthusiasm and cooperation—is seen in the strong and productive relationships among day and boarding students, staff, alumni and parents.
Ashbury Junior School teachers are subject specialists who enrich the Ontario curriculum by extending learning beyond the borders of the classroom. Our bilingual program is offered to qualifying Grade 7 and 8 students. The Junior School curriculum is delivered in an innovative learning environment with hands-on, trans-disciplinary experiences occurring daily through stimulating class discussions and group projects. Our academic program is enhanced with competitions in music, mathematics, social studies, poetry and public speaking. Academic excellence is encouraged through high standards, while expectations and effort are monitored in our learning skills reports. Each student has the opportunity to self assess and create learning goals in dialogue with their teacher. The result: students assume greater responsibility for their learning success!
Ashbury students have a strong sense of community which closely aligns with the Round Square value of Democracy. These values are demonstrated through a House System (student elections), Ashbury Cares (special student initiatives), the Young Round Square Club (discussion of global issues) and student-run assemblies. Inter-house competitions serve to further unite students in academics, co-curricular activities, community and personal growth.

International Engagement
Athletics, the arts, outdoor education and community service lead to the development of healthy, selfconfident individuals by encouraging students to participate, to strive for excellence, and to develop strong leadership skills.
Ashbury’s unique location in the heart of Canada’s bilingual capital city, together with the cultural diversity of our community, fosters international understanding and global responsibility.
The goal of the Ashbury physical education and cocurricular program is to foster skills and to instill values of health and fitness, teamwork, leadership and commitment that are an essential part of maintaining lifelong participation in these activities. Various co-curricular clubs are offered each day after school throughout the school year. Students enjoy further engagement in the arts, sports, science and more. Through these optional activities, students have the opportunity to discover disciplines that they may not have previously considered!
A wide range of human qualities and attributes within the school contributes to academic excellence and institutional success. Students are encouraged to challenge their assumptions, take intellectual risks and learn to work collaboratively with different people. Junior School students experience international understanding first hand through academic and co-curricular trips and exchanges locally, provincially and nationally. Students have the opportunity to travel internationally with the Young Round Square program.

SERVICE TO OTHERS
Character Development Ashbury fosters ethical and spiritual growth in a community founded upon integrity, mutual respect, environmental stewardship and service to others. Our Life Skills Coordinator meets with Junior School students through our Chapel Program three times per week. The IB Learner Profile, which highlights the caring, principled, balanced and open-minded learner, is explored through this program and applied to everyday life. Our students are further supported by a nurse, counsellor and learning strategist—a team approach that encourages students to understand moral and ethical questions in a safe and nurturing environment allowing them to grow confidently.
In addition to the study of environmental issues, all students partake in a year-long outdoor education program and have the opportunity to contribute to the school’s environmental sustainability plan. Learning spaces such as the school’s green roof, grow towers corner and science and discovery laboratories help support this core value.
