empathetic global citizen committed to personal growth

We believe students are best prepared for life when they graduate from our campus as people of character. The development of these values is fully integrated into all facets of school life: Classroom management, academic goals, faculty growth and evaluation, social-emotional curriculum, Chapel talks and service learning. They also encompass shared community expectations. Faculty, staff, board, volunteers and parents: We are all responsible for modeling what we expect from these young people, which is why we call it Portrait of a Saint.

KEEP READING TO LEARN ABOUT A FEW STAND-OUT SAINTS WHO EXEMPLIFY THESE VALUES WELL.

HEAR FROM OUR SAINTS ABOUT THE IMPACT OF THESE VALUES!

SENIOR CAPSTONE PROJECT: Bettering the Lives of the Homeless: Helping Improve a Non-Profit’s Membership Program A multi-faceted student, Jack can be found on the tennis courts or soccer field, editing the yearbook or touring prospective students. He has also served more than 90 hours with 11 organizations through the Young Men’s Service League. Jack’s Junior Honors Thesis was a very personal one and explored the challenges Native Americans currently face, citing the impact of language and cultural immersion programs implemented within communities, as well as the approach of curricula taught in schools from a colonizer’s perspective. From there, he sought to understand the progress Native American tribes are making within their communities by implementing new ways to preserve their culture, language, and education. Estella’s Junior Honors Thesis was launched from watching her aunt’s decade-long struggle with ALS. She explored the morality of the right to die through scholarly research, legal review, and interviews with physicians, patients and religious members. Her Senior Capstone Project explored the use of a cookbook specifically geared toward those living with ALS.

KELSEY NOWLIN RICE UNIVERSITY Health Sciences

Although Kelsey is an outstanding student, her generosity and humility of spirit are just as impressive. She has logged more than 400 hours of service, most of which were with faith-based organizations like her church, Normandale Baptist Church, as well as Union Gospel Mission, Rivertree Academy and World Relief: Christian Humanitarian Organization.

faithful community member

In Kelsey’s Junior Honors Thesis, Why a Refugee May Return to the Danger They Fled, she examined the factors behind refugee repatriation, and sought to identify the struggles that refugees undergo throughout their resettlement into their host country. A qualitative case study was conducted through interviews with refugees who resettled in the United States in hopes of gaining more insight into the perceptions that refugees might have held about many different aspects of the United States before their resettlement. She applied this research to her Senior Capstone Project by exploring ways to better support youth refugees through cultural orientation. Kelsey is Valedictorian, a Cum Laude Society Member, a National Merit Commended Scholar, and a National Hispanic Recognition Scholar.
