Community News Dog walkers joined the hike

Lovely day for a walk! For the third year running, Oswestry and Cambrian Rotary Club held their Oswald’s Trail event, a 10 or 12.6 mile hike around the beautiful hills and places of interest surrounding Oswestry. The event is held to raise funds for the locally based charity, The Movement Centre, and is always held on the Sunday nearest to St Oswald’s Day which is 2 August, this year the same day as the event! A mixture of runners and walkers took advantage of an early start to get going and beat the heat of the day. A big thanks to St Johns Ambulance volunteers who attended, thankfully no casualties were reported! As well as taking in the glorious views and sites of interest those that took part were delighted to find at the Racecourse halfway point a great selection of cakes, tea, coffee and cold drinks provided by the Movement Centre. A welcome break to have a bit of a rest before tackling the second half was appreciated by all. Oswald’s Trail was devised by the Oswestry Ramblers Group and their help and presence was really appreciated before and during the event. Everyone who completed the trail received

a certificate and a badge. The local Catholic School, Our Lady and St Oswald’s, took part in a Rotary competition to design this year’s badge, and the 2026 winner was Isobel. Months of planning are involved to put on events like this and The Rotary club would particularly like to thank Neil Ruby Italy Hair and Beauty Ltd for all the printing involved, Oswestry Library for allowing us to have a month long display to promote it , and GRUM for all the excellent photos. Now it’s time to start planning for 2027. Just one question, why were most of the walkers women? It would be great to see a good number of men taking part next year. So put 1 August in your diary!

Cae Glas Park has a fresh reason to explore: the new OswesTREE Trail, a free, family-friendly route celebrating the remarkable trees that shape this much-loved towncentre green space. Inspired by RHS In Bloom judge Tony Comley, the trail leads visitors past notable specimens, combining an easy outdoor activity with accessible lessons about nature, heritage and the environment. Visitors can pick up a guide

from the park pavilion or use QR codes on signs to follow the digital version. Created by Oswestry In Bloom, the project is sponsored by Oswestry and Cambrian Rotary and was produced with support from the Cae Glas Park Committee and Oswestry Town Council. Organisers hope the year-round attraction will spark curiosity, strengthen appreciation of the park and

Tony’s Singalong Night Returns to Trefonen Following the success of his first singalong evening, local author Tony Wright is bringing another fun-filled night of music, singing and dancing to Trefonen Village Hall this October. After writing and publishing an amusing book about pop music from the 1950s and 1960s, Tony began giving talks to local groups, accompanied by snippets of some of the era’s best-known songs. He soon discovered just how enthusiastically audiences enjoyed singing along. Inspired by the response, Tony organised a singalong evening at Trefonen Village Hall last December. The event proved a great success, with guests not only singing along to their favourite tunes but taking to the dance floor too. Following plenty of positive feedback, Tony decided it was time to do it all again. The next Fun Singalong Night will take place at Trefonen Village

Hall on Saturday 17 October, from 6.45pm until 10.30pm. The evening will feature a carefully selected collection of records, primarily from the 1950s, 60s and 70s, chosen especially for their singalong appeal. This is not karaoke – there is no pressure to perform. Everyone can simply join in with the singing, have a dance or sit back and enjoy the music. And for anyone who doesn’t know all the words, Tony’s advice is simple – just “la-la” along! To help keep the cost of the evening as low as possible, food and drink will not be available at the venue, so guests are welcome to bring their own refreshments. All profits from the event will go towards the upkeep of Trefonen Village Hall. Tickets cost £6 and will be available from early September from Trefonen Village Shop or directly from Tony by calling 01691 653307.

Oswestry Dark Morris is off and dancing! Newly formed Oswestry Dark Morris had it first of its weekly Wednesday meetings and dance practice at The Last Inn at Upper Hengoed. Founder Mike Lade said, ‘We had our first get together with 27 people. Some enjoying the social aspect, some dancing and for many it’s their first time with musicians playing a number of different instruments to have a great fun evening. With the guidance of Deb and Andy May as experienced Morris dancers, two dances with sticks were rehearsed – in the true Border style of Morris. Border style is a high-energy, traditionally rowdy style of English folk dance originating from the Welsh border counties of Shropshire, Herefordshire and Worcestershire. It is characterised by stick-clashing and simple stepping to music. The new Oswestry Dark Morris welcomes anyone of 16 plus who wish to be part of this new project as a dancer (no experience required), musicians with their own instrument on flute, tin whistle, fiddle, guitar, recorder, banjo, accordion, concertina or drum etc. Please contact Mike on 07803 038858, via Facebook @OswestryDarkMorris or via email at mikelade1975@gmail.com. Music at Whittington

Music lovers can look forward to two special concerts in Whittington this autumn as Whittington in Winter presents an enticing programme of live music at St John the Baptist Church. The first concert takes place on Sunday 18 October 2026 at 3pm, when harpist Bethan Conway will perform Sunday Serenade, a beautiful harp recital in the historic surroundings of the church. The autumn programme continues on Saturday 28 November 2026 at 3.30pm, when Scholars & Gentlemen present In dulci jubilo, a programme of Renaissance Christmas music, offering a wonderfully atmospheric start to the festive season. Both concerts will take place at St John the Baptist Church, Whittington, SY11 4DU, with tickets priced at £15 on the door, including refreshments. The two performances offer audiences the chance to enjoy very different musical experiences, from the distinctive sound of the harp to the rich traditions of Renaissance Christmas music, all within the beautiful setting of Whittington’s parish church. Zest for life

Zest is a Strength, Fitness and Pilates studio based in Oswestry, run by women, for women. There are many misconceptions in female fitness that can be confusing and costly to navigate. Zest is an authentic, down to earth, community based space aiming to myth bust and educate women on how to meet their goals in the RIGHT way. Now in their 17th year, Zest trainers have collectively over 75 years experience in the industry, but they have also gone through all different stages of what a woman may experience in her lifetime from injury to mental health challenges to the menopause and into the challenges that aging brings. Our varied timetable of classes reflect this experience and we can guide our ladies through exercise at any point in their life. Zest is particularly outstanding with rehabilitation of injuries and exercise adaption. We strongly believe that exercise should be open and accessible to all women. Their timetable is varied from “LIFT”, a weightlifting class to “Active for Life” which is for those who just need that extra bit time to move that may not be afforded in an average class. This is a studio with a community feel and at its heart, are the members who attend. They are all strong, supportive women who will help any newcomer feel immediately at ease in a wonderfully strong and inspiring space. If you are new to exercise, overcoming an injury, are anxious to enter a fitness environment or just want to move your body with a fun and welcoming class, then Zest is a fitness space you should really explore.

With Love From… How would you like to borrow outfits for fancy events FOR FREE from your local library? You just turn up with your library card, browse the rails of beautiful, preloved clothing offering everything from ballgowns to dresses for the mother of the bride to hats and handbags, available in a wide range of sizes. Sounds too good to be true? Well, it isn’t! Introducing “With Love From…” a shared wardrobe concept, lending party, event clothes and accessories via Oswestry library (soon to launch in Shrewsbury library), enabling people to borrow lovely clothes just like books - and we also offer dressing up bags for kids! It’s completely FREE! You can choose up to 10 items (so you can have a good try on session at home) and check them out for three weeks. No more dragging yourself around the shops, flinching at price tags, and regretting having said yes to the event as you don’t think you’ll ever wear your new outfit again, meaning you get to keep more of your hard-earned cash so your budget stretches further; plus, you can get to wear something different to every event you go to! All you need is a Shropshire library card, and all we ask is that

items are returned in the condition they were borrowed in. If something does happen to the items while they are on loan, we collaborate with local repair café teams where possible and if items are beyond repair, we put them into a collection for our sustainable fashion workshops where they are customised and upcycled. Since January 2025, of the 750 items donated to Oswestry library shared wardrobe, 423 were checked out, 99 were renewed and 77 of those were purchased. Pretty impressive. But aside from the fun of borrowing clothes for free, it also means that we stop clothing going unnecessarily into landfill. The hard facts are that the current fashion system is extremely harmful to people and

planet. It can take around 2,700 litres of water to make one cotton t-shirt. ONE! And approx. 70% of clothing today is made from synthetic fibres, which is basically plastic – and plastic is made from fossil fuels. Each year, the UK generates around 1.45 million tonnes of used textiles, with nearly 350,000 tonnes ending up in landfill instead of being recycled or reused. Shockingly, one bin truck full of textiles is sent to landfill or incinerated EVERY SINGLE SECOND. Think about that. However, there is good news extending the lifespan of clothing by just nine months can reduce its carbon footprint by up to 20%; similar research suggests that an extra 18 months of wear could roughly double that saving. By simply by sharing our wardrobes, donating clothes we no longer wear and keeping them in circulation we can slow down the fashion cycle, reduce waste and protect the earth’s precious resources. We want people to keep re-wearing and sharing for as long as possible, reducing their carbon footprint easily, one party / wedding / prom at a time. With Love From ... is on a mission to bring joy to recycling, re-wearing and re-using. Grab your library card and come and have fun browsing through our clothes, hats, bags, and shoes. And don’t forget, it’s completely FREE! By Pamela Green, volunteer Oswestry life

Coach House Fitness: More Than Just a Gym More than three years after taking over the former Wynnstay Hotel gym, Coach House Fitness continues to thrive. What began as a bid to save a much-loved gym in the heart of Oswestry has grown into something much bigger: a welcoming community where people of all ages and fitness levels come not only to exercise but to improve their overall health and wellbeing. Owner Rad Danailov believes that while the gym has evolved significantly over that time, its values have never changed. “From day one, we’ve wanted to create more than just a gym,” he says. “Anyone can fill a room with equipment, but that’s not what Coach House Fitness is about. We want to create a place where people enjoy coming, where they feel supported, and where fitness, recovery and community all work together. Seeing our members become healthier, happier and more confident by making lasting changes to their lives is what drives everything we do.” One of the biggest innovations over the past year has been the opening of the new Recovery Room. Featuring a traditional sauna, full-body red light therapy panels and a dedicated relaxation space, it reflects the club’s growing focus on promoting overall wellbeing. Widely used by athletes, red light therapy is gaining recognition as an essential component of recovery and, together with the sauna, has quickly become a popular addition to the Coach House Fitness experience. Alongside new facilities, Coach House Fitness has also introduced a Premium Membership designed to offer members even greater value. Premium members receive personalised training programmes updated every six weeks, unlimited fitness classes and full use of the Recovery Room. With a varied timetable of classes held in the purpose-built studio, created in 2024 by transforming the former swimming pool, there is something to suit all ages, abilities and fitness goals – whether it’s Spin, Boxercise, yoga, stretching and mobility, low-impact circuits, the popular Ab Attack class or soon to be introduced Pilates. Launched in 2025, the Coach House Fitness Bootcamps have become one of the club’s biggest success stories.

Demand has grown rapidly, with Bootcamps now running three times a year and every programme selling out. Many participants have gone on to become full members, making Bootcamp an ideal introduction for anyone new to the gym. Combining expert coaching with a supportive group environment, it helps people build the confidence to make exercise part of their everyday life. Claire is one member who knows that better than most. She joined a six-week Bootcamp in April 2025 looking to kickstart her fitness journey. The programme gave her the confidence to become a full member and now, some 16 months later, she regularly attends classes, follows personalised training programmes and has lost an incredible 6 stone. More importantly, she’s discovered a love of exercise and made fitness part of her everyday life. Reflecting on her journey, Claire says: “I was really nervous about joining Bootcamp, but everyone was so welcoming and supportive that I soon started enjoying it. Joining the gym afterwards has completely changed my life. I’m healthier, happier and doing things I never thought I’d be able to do.” For anyone considering taking the first step, Coach House Fitness is keen to make getting started as easy as possible. Free trial sessions and day passes allow people to experience the facilities, meet the team and discover the atmosphere before committing. Although the gym has expanded and developed its offering considerably since 2023, the team are now preparing for one of their most ambitious upgrades yet. Later this year, members will see the existing strength equipment replaced with the latest Technogym machines, complemented by a full redecoration as part of a significant enhancement to the gym. “We’ve got some exciting ideas for the future,” Rad adds. “We’re always looking at ways to improve the experience for our members, so watch this space.” Anyone interested in finding out more, arranging a free trial or discovering what Coach House Fitness has to offer can visit the team at 43 Church Street, Oswestry, SY11 2SZ, call 01691 650083 or email info@coachhousefitness.net Oswestry life

Minutes with the MP By Helen Morgan – MP for North Shropshire As summer draws to a close and September arrives, many of us find ourselves looking back on the months just gone. Whether you’ve spent time with family and friends, enjoyed a holiday, explored somewhere new or simply made the most of brighter evenings closer to home, I hope you’ve had the chance to enjoy time with the people who matter most. For me, one of the highlights of the summer has been spending more time across North Shropshire, particularly here, in and around Oswestry. Parliament’s summer recess offers a valuable opportunity to step away from Westminster and spend more time listening to residents face to face. Throughout the summer, I held a series of Summer Tour events across the constituency, visited local organisations and businesses, and attended many community events. It was a pleasure to meet so many people and to learn about the issues affecting them. Every conversation, whether at a

public meeting, community gathering or on the high street, helps me to better understand the challenges and the opportunities facing our area. One of the things that always strikes me about Oswestry is the strength of its community spirit. Time and again, I’ve seen people coming together to support local causes, champion local businesses and make our area such a special place to live. September often feels like a month of new beginnings. As children and young people head back to school and many of us return to familiar routines, there’s a sense of renewal in the air. It’s a chance to reset, refocus and look ahead. I feel that same sense of purpose as Parliament returns, and it’s the conversations I’ve had over the summer that will come with me back to Westminster. I will continue to fight for the issues residents have told me matter to them most, from improving public services and supporting local businesses to ensuring our rural communities get the attention they deserve.

Paws for thought

Pet-proof your home Even the best-behaved pets can wreak havoc. One survey from Novuna Personal Finance found that 75% of owners had suffered pet-related damage. Soiled carpets and flooring, chewed furniture and belongings, and torn upholstery featured high on the animal vandalism list.

Naming and shaming

Cats tend to cause chaos with their claws, with scratched and ripped furniture being a common problem. Dogs can chew your possessions or your soft furnishings, and dig in your carpet. Both can knock over ornaments. Many mouse, hamster and gerbil owners find themselves stumping up to repair rodent damage, according to the Novuna poll. Gnawing on furniture and skirting boards, and chewing through wires can be an expensive side effect of your little pet escaping.

Prevention strategies •

Ensure you have pet damage cover when you take out home insurance (your pet insurance won’t cover this) Keep prized possessions out of tail-wagging range or away from clumsy cats Train your pet early on Give dogs plenty of exercise so they don’t have pentup energy

• • •

• • • • • • •

Don’t leave dogs alone for long periods when they might get bored or anxious Leave the radio on when you’re out,to reassure them Give cats a scratching post to steer them away from wallpaper or furniture Opt for scratch-resistant furnishing fabrics and hard floors Have designated areas for pets, with gates and covers Create a sanctuary for your pet, in a cosy corner or with a comfy bed Give your dog toys to entertain it and channel chewing urges.

Oswestry Badminton Club Invites New Players to Join the Action As one of the area’s longestestablished sports clubs, Oswestry Badminton Club has a proud history and passionate membership and are looking for new players to grab their rackets and come down for some rallies. Meeting every Monday night at Oswestry Leisure Centre (8pm-10pm), the club hosts a lively and inclusive evening of games. Where everyone gets to play with a range of partners, helping to mix abilities and create a fun yet competitive atmosphere. Whether you’re wanting to improve your technique or get back into the sport after a break, the pace is lively, the games competitive, and the focus is firmly on enjoyment and development - Oswestry Badminton is the place. Oswestry Badminton Club are pleased to be recently awarded grants from Oswestry Sports Forum and Cash4clubs to help with running costs and develop the

sport into the wider community. “We have players of Indian and Chinese heritage where badminton is ranked highly as a sport. Through their love of the sport, it has been an opportunity to connect, socialise and make new friends. Through badminton there are a number that have formed friendships and book courts and play regularly outside of our Monday session.” Craig Marston, long-time member and captain of Oswestry’s Men’s A Team, has been playing badminton for over 30 years. Passionate about the sport and its benefits, he’s clear about what makes it so special. “Pickleball and padel may be trendy right now, but badminton remains the fastest racket sport out there with smashes reaching speeds of 350mph! Compare that to the fastest tennis serve which tops out at half the speed at 163mph. “Badminton is quick, skilful, and good exercise. At Oswestry Badminton Club, we have a strong membership of all levels and ages. We’re a friendly group, and we want to see new players joining us.” So, whether you’ve played in the past or currently play recreationally, you’ll find a warm welcome and a good game waiting for you here,” Craig adds. “Our club night is 2 hours long; everyone gets plenty of court time and there is no time for sitting out and having a rest.” Competitive players will also find plenty to enjoy as the only local club to field teams in the Shropshire County badminton league, offering members the chance

to take their game to the next level. League players regularly support and challenge developing players, offering encouragement and advice to help improve their performance. One such example is Alex, who joined the club a year ago after relocating to the area. “I started to play badminton at a social level after being introduced to the sport by my Grandad but since joining Oswestry Badminton club my game has really developed thanks to the help of other members,” he says. “I love the game and now I am playing for a team which is another level.” Oswestry Badminton Club is particularly looking for more ladies to join to form a ladies team, playing social matches against other clubs with the goal of entering a team in the league. The club is building momentum with visitors welcome at any time. You just need to bring a racket, suitable footwear and a big bottle of water to rehydrate. Above all, Oswestry Badminton Club prides itself on being both friendly and competitive. It’s a club where social sport meets serious skill. “Badminton is such a great sport, it’s fast, fun, and brilliant exercise,” says Craig. “Whether you’re returning to the sport, looking to sharpen your skills, or just want a great way to stay active and social, Oswestry Badminton Club is the perfect place to play. We’d love to see some new faces on court.” If you’re interested in joining or would like to visit one evening to try it out, get in touch with the club by emailing oswestrybadders@gmail.com Oswestry life

Smithfield Street, Oswestry SY11 2EG Jewellery and Coin roadshow

A very lucky couple called at one of our recent roadshow events with a couple of old gold chains and a silver charm bracelet and a bag of old silver British coins. We paid them over £1600 just for the coins alone. They turned out to be pre 1947 silver coins that were normal currency a few years ago and are now highly collected. We asked them for their permission to pass on this story to help other people realise what they may be sitting on and they were only too pleased to allow us to let everyone know that they might be sitting on a goldmine and not even know it! Like most people, who can only dream of winning the pools or the lottery, a lot of normal households have a hidden treasure of old gold jewellery, silver jewellery, teapots, trophies, trays and old objets d’art. Why not get a free valuation from our experts at one of our roadshows. There is no queuing and our experts will give you a one on one appraisal of the value of your treasured possessions in a private area, where there are no prying eyes, watching the process evolve. If you like the valuation our expert will make you the same offer in cash which you can accept or decline at no cost to yourself. The whole process of Valuation is free of charge and very private, so you have nothing to lose and a lot to gain.

OF THE MONTH SEPTEMBER 2026

Train Dreams (12A) AVAILABLE ON NETFLIX

Some films demand your attention from the opening scene. 2025’s Oscar nominated Train Dreams does the opposite, gently drawing you into its world until you suddenly realise you›re completely absorbed. It’s a slow, thoughtful film that rewards a bit of patience. Joel Edgerton stars as Robert Grainier, a railroad worker and logger trying to build a life in the American Northwest during the early twentieth century. His world is shaped by backbreaking work, breathtaking landscapes and the joys and tragedies that come with an ordinary life. The story unfolds at an unhurried pace, almost like someone recalling memories from long ago, while the stunning scenery becomes as important as any of the characters. There’s very little here in the way of action or big dramatic moments. Instead, Train Dreams quietly reflects on love, loss and the passing of time. It won’t suit viewers looking for edge of your seat thrills, but if you enjoy films that linger in the mind long after the credits roll, this one is well worth the journey. By Michael Hudson

Oswestry tribute to top star There’s a special screening in Oswestry this month to celebrate the long and successful career of international leading man Sam Neill. The highly versatile, multi award-winning actor who recently died was a familiar face for over 50 years. His roles (from a very long list) include the Jurassic Park franchise, The Piano, The Hunt For Red October, The Omen series and - on TV Peaky Blinders. The Oswestry Film Society is showing (Sep 30) one of Neill’s own favourites from 2016 - The Hunt For The Wilderpeople. It is still the highest-grossing New Zealand film, and Neill’s performance was critically acclaimed. OFS Wednesday nights, hosted by Oswestry’s Maona cinema, are open to all. Advance tickets for OFS and all films in Maona’s rich mix of an ever-growing schedule via www.maonacinema.com - or if available on the door. There’s a nice cafebar there too!

Exhibition

The Longest Yarn… Britain’s wartime story woven in wool Currently halfway through a three year tour of the UK, The Longest Yarn exhibition opens to the public from 2pm on Tuesday 1 September and then daily until 30 September from 10am (last admissions at 4pm). The exhibition depicts life in Britain during World War II and features eighty, one metre tableaux created entirely from wool either knitted or crocheted. Britain at War examines how Britain navigated World War II, from the declaration of war on 3 September 1939 to VE Day on 8 May 1945. This includes significant events such as D-Day, the King’s Speech, The Blitz, the bombing of major cities, Britain coping with the war – the Home Guard, the Women’s Land Army, rationing, and much more. The 3D wool art display will feature eighty panels. In addition, there will be life-size knitted displays representing real people such as army leaders and land girls. There are also a number of talks, concerts and plays that complement the exhibition. The Longest Yarn is run by a small, passionate, self-funded non-profit association. They’ve brought this exhibition to life through determination, creativity, and the support of generous people like you.

Every contribution — big or small — makes a real impact. Your support helps cover essential costs like travel, transportation, and protective display boxes, making it possible to share this work with communities across the UK, Ireland, and beyond. Any surplus funds are donated to veteran charities, ensuring all generosity continues to make a difference long after the exhibition moves on. By supporting the association, you’re not just funding an exhibition you’re joining a community that celebrates creativity, honours history, and believes in human connection. So, thank you for being part of the journey. Admission is by a minimum donation of £5, accompanied under 14 year olds go free. School visits are welcome and evening visits can be made by arrangement. Put 200g of the pistachios into a blender and blitz until the consistency of ground almonds. 3. Whisk the sugar and eggs together with an electric whisk until pale and fluffy. Add the rapeseed oil, whisking continuously, and then fold in the ground pistachios, polenta, baking powder and salt. Wellness

Ready is a Decision, Not a Feeling

by Jenna Ward, Life Coach and Reiki Practitioner.

I read this somewhere recently and it really resonated with me. We often think we need to learn more, train more, buy more or become more before we’re ready. But what if ready isn’t something we feel? What if it’s simply a decision? It reminded me of a cycling trip I did through Spain with a friend in 2016. We cycled from Seville to Santiago, to Gijon over six weeks, during June and July (two of the hottest months of the year) over hills and mountains, with about five rest days. You might wonder how many months we’d trained for this and

can spend weeks, months or even years trying to feel ready, or we can decide to simply begin. Because here’s the thing: even when we can’t pedal, we can still walk. You don’t have to do everything perfectly. You don’t have to look like everyone else. The goal isn’t to ace every moment; it’s to have the experience in the first place. How many experiences have you talked yourself out of because you didn’t feel ready? And what might change if you decided that you already are?

what specialist gear we invested in. We didn’t. I said yes just three weeks before I left. I barely sat on a bike beforehand. I borrowed almost everything: bike, helmet, panniers, tent, sleeping mat. I bought the other basics and cycled in my trusty Birkenstocks, my friend in her flip-flops. We started early, rested over lunch (bread roll, tin of tuna, tomato) with a siesta (in some very interesting spots, including under a highway overpass!), then often rode until dusk. Some days were hard. There were climbs where I physically couldn’t move the pedals because of the incline and had to get off and push. I’m not generally one for jumping in at the deep end and this was definitely that, but what the experience taught me was something invaluable. We

Health

Staying Strong for Life One of the biggest misconceptions about ageing is that we should start taking it easy. While it’s true that our bodies change as we get older, becoming less active to ‘preserve’ the body isn’t the answer. In fact, it’s often the very thing that Callum, PT & Fitness Instructor. accelerates decline. Strength, rather than being something that peaks and then naturally fades, is in fact something we need to maintain. Habits built in our 40s, 50s and beyond have a huge influence on how mobile and independent we remain later in life. Unfortunately, many people see exercise as something reserved for weight loss or athletic performance. In reality, strength training is one of the best investments you can make in your future health. Maintaining muscle supports healthy joints, improves balance, strengthens bones and helps preserve independence by making everyday tasks easier. It also reduces the risk of falls, a major cause of injury as we age.

Perhaps the greatest benefit is confidence. Knowing your body is strong enough for everyday life gives you freedom to keep saying yes to new experiences, whether that’s hiking with friends, travelling or playing with grandchildren, without worrying about your body letting you down. The good news is that building strength doesn’t mean spending hours in the gym. Two or three well-planned sessions each week are enough for most people to make meaningful progress. That’s why, at Coach House Fitness, every premium member receives a personalised training programme designed around their goals, ability and experience. Many people ask themselves, “How do I want to look in six months?” A better question might be, “How do I want to feel in twenty years?” Choices you make today will have a lasting impact on how well your body moves and supports you in later life. Exercise isn’t about turning back the clock. It’s about giving yourself the best chance of staying strong, independent and able to enjoy everything life has to offer for as long as possible. To learn more, visit www.coachhousefitness.net, or to book a free 30-minute consultation and gym trial, email us at info@coachhousefitness.net.

Health with Dr Paul Middleton

Gender is important, complicated and meaningful Leonard Sax This month we are walking into a minefield: medicine and sex. Sex is, like gender, complicated: not everyone with a Y chromosome is physically male, not everyone with two X chromosomes is physically female but, and here is the crux of this article, sex and your chromsomes do affect your health. Apart from the obvious differences there are more subtle effects too. Immune systems react differently to the same insult which partly explains why more men died of covid. Almost all medical textbooks were written by men until fairly recently. Almost all medical research was based on male subjects, including the animal aspects of drug development. This might explain why biological women experience more drug side effects. Medicine has, over the centuries, had a male bias. It is only recently that medical trials have started reporting sex-based results. It is an amazing fact that many of the commonly prescribed drugs have no published data to support their use in women!

If this isn’t enough then there are clear sexbased differences in how symptoms are presented to the doctor. Women tend to use a wider range of vocabulary to describe their symptoms and this is often not reflected in medical training. There is evidence that women are using both their cerebral hemispheres – men only the left one! Chest pain often described in terms of severity by men may be called intolerable or frightening by women. This might explain why coronary heart disease, amongst other conditions, takes longer to diagnosis in women. It is now known that women get more small vessel related heart disease so present differently in many cases. There is now active research into these differences. It appears that there are sex-based differences at the cellular level and, although there will always be a significant overlap in all these areas, in sex-based science there is still much to be learned that will benefit all of us.

Most of us are good at planning for the things we can see coming – a new home, retirement or our children’s futures. But it’s often the things we don’t plan for that can have the biggest financial impact. Oswestry-based independent financial adviser, Craig Roberts, from Belgrave Wincham, explains how the right protection can help you weather life’s storms. “The biggest financial shocks tend to come from three places,” says Craig. “A serious illness or injury that stops you working, a critical diagnosis that brings unexpected costs, or the sudden loss of someone your household depends on. Each one can put a huge strain on a family’s finances – and yet many people have little in place to help if something like this happens. “Income protection,” he explains, “addresses that first scenario. It means that if illness or injury prevents you from working, you will typically receive a proportion of your salary each month. That support continues for as long as your policy provides cover, giving you breathing space when you need it most.” Alongside this, critical illness cover can provide another layer of financial protection. “Rather than a monthly income,” Craig continues, “critical illness cover can pay a one-off, lump sum if you’re diagnosed with a condition listed in the policy. This can be invaluable if you have significant debts, a large mortgage or need to adapt your home.” Many families could also benefit from the security that life insurance offers, Craig adds. “Life insurance,” he says, “can be the third piece of the puzzle. Should the worst happen, it can provide your loved ones with a lump sum or regular payments to help with the mortgage, household bills and day-to-day living costs, easing some of their financial worries at an already difficult time. “None of us likes to think about these situations, but having the right protection in place can make all the difference, turning a financial crisis into something your family can manage.” If you’d like to understand what protection could support your family, Belgrave Wincham can help - call 01691 886554. This guide is for information purposes and does not constitute financial advice, which should be based on your individual circumstances. Benefits of insurance products will be put at risk or cease altogether if premium payments are not maintained. Cover and benefits are subject to eligibility, policy terms, conditions and exclusions.

Is a court approved financial settlement necessary if we agree everything between ourselves? Q: My wife and I are getting divorced. Everything is perfectly amicable as we have just drifted apart due to work commitments, different interests etc, and have virtually been living separate lives for the past two years. We plan to sell our home and just split everything down the middle, but my brother says we should still get a formal financial order from the court. Is this really necessary? A: It would definitely be advisable to follow your brother’s suggestion. Even though matters may be amicable finalising of financial matters and a severing as to financial ties would be beneficial. This would prevent the risk of your wife in the future pursuing you particularly if there is then a change in your financial circumstances such as greater savings, inheritance, sudden windfall etc. A court-approved financial consent order would provide this surety. A financial settlement can cover issues such as the family home, savings, investments, pensions, business interests, debts, spousal maintenance etc. The Court will consider whether your proposed agreement is fair to both parties, taking into account each person’s income and earning capacity, housing needs, financial resources, standard of living during the marriage, the length of the marriage, ages of the parties and the welfare of any children under 18. Even if both of you agree with the terms then there is the potential that the Court may intervene if they believe that such an agreement is unfair. Seeking advice from a solicitor to help you draft an agreement will ensure there is no ambiguity or loophole and that the agreement is fair and you are not selling yourself short. The solicitor will also advise you of whether the court is likely to approve it. In cases where parties cannot agree, a solicitor can explain the options of negotiation, mediation or court proceedings depending on circumstances.

This question has been answered by Deon Hayward, a Solicitor with GHP Legal. World-class tennis returns with the Lexus Wrexham Open One of the biggest events in women’s tennis is set to return to North Wales this autumn, bringing international players, local businesses and the wider community together for the Lexus Wrexham Open. Oswestry law firm Lanyon Bowdler is proud to be supporting the tournament, which has grown from modest beginnings in Shrewsbury in 2008 into one of the highest-profile events on the tennis circuit. Tournament organiser Dave Courteen says the competition now attracts players from across the world, alongside many of Britain’s leading female tennis stars. “The Lexus Wrexham Open is part of the ITF World Tennis Tour and is now one of the biggest women’s tournaments on the circuit,” he says. “It started out in Shrewsbury back in 2008 as a much smaller tournament and has grown into what

is now a major ranking tournament, with players coming from all over the world to compete here.” Dave chats with Jemma Groves, of Lanyon Bowdler’s corporate and commercial team, about the challenges of organising the tournament for an episode of the firm’s Legal Lounge podcast. “There is so much to think about, from supplying the right kind of food at the right time for players, to transport, accommodation and ball crews,” he says. “It costs around £450,000 to stage an event like this, so the support of sponsors like Lanyon Bowdler is absolutely vital. Quite simply, without sponsors it wouldn’t be able to go ahead.” Along with its base in Oswestry, Lanyon Bowdler has offices in Shrewsbury and North Wales, as well as Telford, Ludlow and Hereford, making its support of the tournament

Jemma Groves and Dave Courteen

a natural fit as the event has evolved and moved across the border. Jemma Groves, corporate and commercial solicitor at Lanyon Bowdler, says: “We are delighted to be long-time supporters of the tournament and helping an event that brings world-class sport to our region. “With offices serving clients across Shropshire, Herefordshire and North Wales, the tournament reflects the communities we work with every day, and we are proud to play a small part in its continued success.” To hear more about what goes into staging an international tennis tournament, listen to the The Legal Lounge podcast on the Lanyon Bowdler website or your preferred podcast platform.

Everyone deserves a place to call home There are certain things in life that we take for granted, and a home is something we rarely stop to think about. But for many across Shropshire, finding a stable home can be one of life’s biggest challenges. This is what inspired Felicity Davies to set up Foundation Homes & Support CIC, a not-for-profit organisation which at its core believes that everyone deserves the opportunity to move forward, regardless of what hurdles life has placed in their path. With over 20 years experience supporting vulnerable adults, Felicity has worked alongside people facing homelessness, mental health struggles, domestic abuse, substance misuse issues and more. “People don’t just need a roof over their head,” she says. “They need stability, encouragement and someone who believes they can progress in life. With the right environment, people begin to rebuild their confidence, and that’s when real change happens.” Founded in 2024, Foundation Homes and Support provides supported accommodation, combined with personalised support that helps residents work towards living independently. No individual’s story is a ‘one size fits all,’ so support is tailored to the individual’s needs. This may include helping someone develop everyday living skills, access education or employment, manage finances or simply regain the confidence lost through difficult experiences. Through building close links with local services, families, and partner organisations, Foundation Homes & Support aims to provide a strong network of support that helps people achieve lasting, positive change. For Felicity, the inspiration behind the organisation is both professional and personal. Supporting loved ones through their own challenges has shone a spotlight on how important stable housing and the right support can be to a person’s wellbeing and independence. “We all need support at different times in our lives,” she says. “No one should be defined by their most difficult moments.” As demand for supported accommodation grows across Shropshire, Foundation Homes & Support is playing an increasingly important role in helping people move towards a brighter future. The success

is not measured in numbers or statistics but in the everyday moments of progress residents make – confidence growing, reconnecting with others and building hope for whatever happens next. The organisation is particularly keen to work with local landlords across Shropshire who would consider leasing their premises to Foundation Homes, offering a secure and socially responsible opportunity to make a positive impact on someone’s life and the community. Sometimes all it takes is the right support and a place to call home to help someone take that first step towards a better future. To find out more, visit www.foundation-homes.org

Perfectly Situated

Located in Park Hall by the villages of Whittington and Gobowen and close to the Market Town of Oswestry, Wynne Place benefits from countryside living with the hustle and bustle of town life just a short drive away.

Remembering its history, Wynne Place is named after Major Wynne Corrie, who owned the Park Hall Estate, and gave it over to the military to use as their local headquarters during the First World War. The land at Park Hall remained a military camp for many years after the end of World War I and through World War II, finally closing in the 1970s.

Well-connected

Wynne Place is just a four-minute drive from Gobowen Train Station with direct connections to Chester, Crewe, Shrewsbury and as far as Manchester and Cardiff. Likewise, there is a bus stop conveniently located next to the development with services to Oswestry and Ellesmere, providing connections to Shrewsbury. Additionally, with Wales on the doorstep and easily routed off the A5 to North Wales, Chester, Shrewsbury and the Midlands, Wynne Place couldn’t be more accessible.

Gardening

September in the garden by Graham Mitchell Predicting the weather is becoming too difficult. Nowadays, I just go with “expect anything”. We have had a battle this summer. Everything peaked early, and watering became a daily military operation. September is usually a gentle turning point from summer into autumn and can be one of the most useful months for gardeners. Days are usually mild, with average highs of around 18°C and cooler evenings near 10°C, so plants are still active, but growth begins to slow. We should expect rain, which helps newly moved or planted specimens settle in. But who knows this year? In borders, the aim is to balance tidiness with wildlife value. Keep deadheading dahlias, roses, cosmos and other late-flowering plants to extend colour into the month, but leave some seedheads on plants such as teasels, sunflowers and ornamental grasses for birds and autumn structure. It is amazing how beautiful some of the seedheads can be. Lift and divide overcrowded perennials once they have finished flowering, replanting healthy sections into refreshed soil. September is also a good time to begin planting spring bulbs such as daffodils, crocuses, hyacinths, and fritillaries. Tulips can wait until later in

Keep your Dahlias flowering

autumn, especially if the ground is still warm. In the vegetable and fruit garden, the month is mainly about harvesting, storing and making space for the next crop. Apples, pears, plums, late raspberries, beans, potatoes and courgettes should be picked regularly before cooler weather and heavier rain reduce their quality. On empty beds, you can sow hardy salads, spinach, rocket, winter lettuce or green manures to protect the soil. Lawns will also need attention, and cooler, moister weather should encourage recovery without the stress of this summer’s heat. Scarify to remove thatch, aerate compacted areas, overseed thin patches and lay new turf if needed. Overall, September gardening is about harvesting what summer has produced, keeping displays going for a little longer and setting up the garden for a stronger, healthier spring.
