Oswestry In Bloom celebrates
Community News
Oswestry charity aims to clear child therapy waiting list The Movement Centre in Oswestry has launched its ambitious “30 for 30” fundraising campaign, where the charity team hopes to win the backing of 30 different businesses, organisations, groups or individuals, who will each fundraise and donate £1,500. The total sum of £45,000 would ensure every child, who is currently on the waiting list for specialist Targeted Training physiotherapy at The Movement Centre, would receive the specialist equipment they need to begin their journey to independence. Each of the £1,500 donated cash pots would fund a specialist standing frame for a youngster to receive the specialist equipment they need to begin their journey to independence. The first people to back the fundraising mission with a £1,500 donation were Nigel West and his family, who own Fiveways Insurance Group in Newport and Stafford. The West family has already seen the impact the Targeted Training physiotherapy can have on a young person, after their godson Jacob completed the programme at the centre when he was just four years old. They have given an additional £500 to fund the refurbishment of two further standing frames. Jacob, who is now 20 years old and a proud supporter of the charity himself, attributes his physical strength and level of independence to The Movement Centre physiotherapy programme. Helen Knight, Chief Executive Officer at The Movement Centre, based on the same site as the Robert Jones & Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital in Gobowen said, “We’ve reached a point whereby there are many children who could benefit from our therapy, but we simply don’t have the resources to help them. “It would be amazing if we could say, ‘we’ve raised £45,000’ before Christmas and give each of the 30 families on the waiting list an early Christmas present.” To pledge your £1,500 please email claire.s@themovementcentre.co.uk or call Claire, Curtis or Nicky on 01691 404248. To book your place at the “30 for 30 Business Breakfast” on 30 September visit: www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/business-breakfast-at-the-movement-centre-30for-30-tickets-1998219854375 and to pledge your support visit the-movement-centre.co.uk/30-for-30
Oswestry In Bloom brought together residents, businesses, schools, community groups and volunteers for a friendly presentation evening celebrating the people who help make the town brighter, greener and more welcoming. The evening recognised outstanding floral displays, gardens, shopfronts, community projects and environmental efforts across Oswestry, highlighting the creativity, care and teamwork shown by entrants throughout the year. Awards were presented across a wide range of categories, with thanks given to local sponsors, judges and supporters whose contributions continue to strengthen the competition. The evening also offered an opportunity to thank the volunteers whose behind-thescenes work keeps the town’s displays thriving through the seasons. Their efforts, alongside the enthusiasm of residents and organisations, continue to support Oswestry’s reputation for horticultural excellence and community activity. Organisers said the success of the presentation evening demonstrates the strength of Oswestry’s community spirit and the value of working together to create attractive, sustainable and welcoming places for all who live in, work in and visit the town. Curtains Up at ‘The Grove’
Oswestry School officially opened the doors to its magnificent new Grove Performing Arts Centre last month, marking the culmination of an ambitious £1.5 million fundraising campaign. The special ‘Curtains Up’ event brought together supporters, benefactors and many of the people whose generosity, vision and hard work made this transformational project possible. Guests included Helen Morgan MP, representatives from Oswestry Town Council and Shropshire Council, and members of the Shropshire Lieutenancy. In an inspiring address, Headmaster Peter Middleton shared the remarkable news that, only that morning, he had received a telephone call from a generous benefactor
pledging the final £60,000 required to complete the campaign. The donation means that the school’s £1.5 million fundraising target has now officially been reached, providing a fitting and memorable finale to the project’s fundraising journey. Peter Wilcox-Jones, now in his 27th year as Chair of Governors

Health
Join ‘Walk With a Doc’ group for health & talks By Dawn Milner - walk leader and retired GP It’s nearly a year since I waited by the park gates to welcome my first walkers to join me on a WWAD. I was inspired to open a new chapter of this organisation when perchance I joined a group in Washington DC in August 2025. The aim is to increase physical activity, provide free health education and build social connections. The not-for-profit organisation was started by Dr David Sabgir, a cardiologist in Columbus Ohio who realised that just telling his patients to walk more was not having much effect. He decided to invite them to take a walk with him….and they did…in large numbers! There are now more than 700 communities involved around the world. Some of these groups are led by “future” doctors and also some by other licensed healthcare providers. As I remember, it was raining on that first walk , and I was joined by two brave walkers. Unfortunately, a third potential walker, Joan, was sheltering in a nearby coffee shop and missed us! We took cover in the back of St Oswald‘s Church to register the event using the QR code and I gave a short talk on stress management. Numbers fluctuate but have steadily built up and there’s now a small but loyal group of supporters. Amusingly it’s often thought that I’m leading walks with a dog….my fault for including my dog in the poster. Well behaved dogs are indeed allowed. Various topics have provoked interest: fibre in the diet, healthy aging, bowel cancer, stroke and high blood pressure, eye health. The talk on blood pressure was given by Dr Pam Linney, a local GP, and she even brought and used her blood pressure machine. In May, the community care coordinator, Letitia Orritt,
invited me to provide a drop in information table at Plas Ffynnon Medical Centre . This definitely helped spread the word. It turned out that May is National Walking month. These walks are free and last an hour. They take place on the second Tuesday of each month, and we meet at Cae Glas Park gates at 10.30am. Our park is a beautiful place to be proud of and it’s a pleasure to walk round each at their own pace. One of my regular walkers, Mel, told us that she loves our walks because she’s met some great new friends and the talks are always very interesting. She says she learned something every time! Joan says, “ Walk with a Doc is a safe way for people in all stages of life and health conditions to exercise with Dawn. She delivers health education which is beneficial to all attendees before walking round.” From a personal point of view, I’ve also made new friends. We know how important walking is for physical and mental health and being out in nature and making friends is so special. A day when you don’t speak to another human being is not a good one. As a retired GP, I’m happy to answer questions during the walk and would encourage people of all ages and abilities to join our little group. I’d also like to put out a plea to local doctors and health care providers who may be able to join in and indeed take over the group when I get too old to contribute! For more information check out the website walkwithadoc.org. Walk leaders get lots of support including suggestion for topics and information sheets. Oswestry life

Paws for thought
How to choose a vet First things first
The first consideration will be how far each practice is from where you live and whether you can park nearby. Their opening hours need to suit you too. It’s a legal requirement for any practising vet to be registered with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS). Check this on the RCVS website: www.rcvs.org.uk.
The services on offer
An independent vet might be able to offer more continuity of care and not have to follow corporate procedures on treatment and pricing. But a larger chain can often offer more extensive facilities, for example, diagnostic equipment.
All vets have to offer 24-hour emergency cover. Does this take place at their premises? If they are part of an arrangement whereby several practices group together to provide it, or if they outsource emergency cover to a dedicated out-of-hours service, you might have to travel some distance. If your pet has a particular condition, you might want to look for a practice that has a specialist in that area. For unusual pets, a vet experienced with that species will be reassuring for you.
Counting the cost
Where to look
Local or corporate?
Prices vary, so shop around. Compare the cost of various treatments and services, such as consultations, prescriptions, and vaccinations. Some vets offer payment plans.
Ask other pet owners or use the comprehensive RCVS online directory (findavet.rcvs.org.uk). For an independent vet, search the Federation of Independent Veterinary Practices (FIVP) database (www.independentvets.co.uk).

Wellbeing
Boosted energy and calmer mind with Qigong sessions If you’re interested in helping support your body, weekly sessions of Qigong (pronounced chee-gung) are now being run in Oswestry. Qigong can be used as a simple, accessible routine for reducing stress, improving energy, and feeling more grounded in daily life. Sessions combine gentle movement, breath, and mindfulness to support both physical and mental well-being. Qigong is thousands of years old: Qi refers to life force or energy, and Gong means work, skill or cultivation. So, roughly speaking, Qigong means ‘energy work’. It was developed to help Buddhist monks to strengthen and move their bodies, as they were weakened from hours of sitting in meditation. It has stood the test of time. Now, scientists are beginning to acknowledge how important Qigong can be for both mind and body. As well as working the joints, muscles and tendons, Qigong works the soft tissue and organs. It has many dimensions and everyone has their own personal
I started doing Qigong because of the pain that fibromyalgia causes me to suffer and thank God since I started practicing I feel much more relaxed which helps to have less pain, I really enjoy it and I will continue to practice, thank you for the opportunity.
experience whether it be the physical movement, the internal alchemy, or the breath work that you prefer. It calms the nerves, reduces blood pressure, creates grounded balance, improves posture, organ function, strengthens bone density, improves hormonal balance, and consequently lifts mood, strengthens the immune system, and reduces pain and inflammation. Claire Irwin who runs the sessions says, “I discovered Qigong when a friend told me it could possibly help with carpal tunnel syndrome. I had no idea at the time of the life changing journey Qigong would take me on. It has changed my way of thinking, moving and living life - and my carpal tunnel symptoms have virtually disappeared. I know Qigong will be in my life forever and my aim now is to share what I have learnt and help as many people as I can.” Claire is a qualified Yoqi Qigong instructor and holds a Qigong session every Tuesday, 6-7pm at Oswestry Senior Citizens Club, Lorne Street, Oswestry. Sessions last an hour. To find out more, contact Claire on 07957 519461 or follow on Facebook @ Qigong Within. Oswestry life

MAYOR’S MINUTES Mayor Cllr Jonathan Upton
Three Months On as Mayor – Continuing to Celebrate Our Community. So… where was I? Oh yes! Since having the honour of opening the Oswestry Food & Drink Festival, my diary has remained wonderfully busy. Over the past few weeks, I have joined Cae Glas Cricket Club for their Supporters’ Day celebrations and the commemoration of the 10th anniversary of the refurbishment of Gatacre Pavilion. I was also delighted to welcome the Heart of England in Bloom judges to Oswestry and to judge the town’s best shopfront for the prestigious Mayor’s Award. The busy schedule continued with a visit to Llysfield Nursing Home’s annual Summer Fete, judging the bestkept plots at Gatacre Allotments before presenting the awards at their Open Day, and selecting the best-kept trade stands at the Oswestry Show. I was also honoured to open the annual Oswestry Balloon Carnival and join the team at the Memorial Hall for their Open Day. One particularly memorable occasion was attending the final OsNosh Community Café. It was a bittersweet event that celebrated the tremendous impact the project has had in bringing people together and supporting our community over many years.

Alongside these engagements, I have continued to support my three chosen charities by volunteering at Oswestry Town Museum, joining Men Walking and Talking on their weekly walks, and helping the Oswestry Senior Citizens’ Club with their regular DIY sessions. It has certainly been a busy few months, but an incredibly rewarding one. Open days, awards, judging, celebrations and, most importantly, memories. Every event, meeting and conversation reminds me what a privilege it is to serve such a vibrant and community-minded town. As summer draws to a close and the Council reconvenes in September, attention will soon turn to Remembrance events and Christmas preparations. I remain committed to serving the people of Oswestry in any way I can and look forward to the opportunities, challenges and celebrations ahead. Mayoress, Cllr Ruth Simmonds, and I look forward to meeting more residents and supporting the groups that make our town special. If you would like to invite us to an event, please get in touch via Sandra Trevor at sandratrevor@oswestry-tc.gov.uk or via the Oswestry Town Council pages

To Board or Not to Board? A Taste of Boarding Life When considering the best school for your child, there used to be only two choices: boarding or not boarding. Today, families have far greater flexibility, with a wider range of options available to find the right balance. Alongside academic excellence, parents value an environment where their child can grow, develop confidence and enjoy a consistent, supportive education. Many boarding schools now offer a variety of options, with part-time or weekly boarding becoming increasingly popular. Providing a bridge between day school and full boarding, it allows pupils to experience the benefits of boarding while maintaining the comfort of home. Flexibility is Key Distance from school is often one of the biggest considerations when choosing the right school. Weekly boarding can open up new possibilities, allowing pupils to stay during the week before returning home at weekends or, where appropriate, part-way through the week. For many families, this makes schools that may once have felt too far away a realistic option. Rather than spending hours travelling each day, pupils can focus their time and energy on learning, activities and friendships. Weekly boarding can also work well for students who have experienced occasional boarding, whether due to family commitments, travel arrangements, or academic and co-curricular opportunities. It provides a flexible approach that can adapt as needs change. For parents, this offers practical support in balancing family life and work commitments. At the same time, pupils benefit from a consistent routine, evening activities and opportunities to develop their time-management and organisational skills. As students progress through the school, weekly boarding can provide a natural pathway towards full boarding, particularly in Sixth Form. It helps pupils build the independence and confidence they will need for university and life beyond school. St. Bede’s
St. Hilda’s
Independence, Community and Opportunity Weekly and occasional boarding give pupils the chance to become part of a wider school community. They can build friendships across year groups, meet students from different backgrounds and nationalities, and take part in opportunities beyond the classroom. Living alongside others also develops teamwork, communication and responsibility. Opportunities such as becoming a Head of House provide further chances to develop leadership skills and confidence. Creating Memories That Last a Lifetime And last but not least… boarding is fun! Whether weekly or full-time, pupils can enjoy a wide range of activities, from sport, drama, CCF and Duke of Edinburgh to golf, swimming, gym sessions, debating and evening activities. Weekend trips and activities also provide opportunities to try new things, strengthen friendships and make the most of life at Ellesmere. Come and Experience Boarding for Yourself There’s no better way to discover what boarding at Ellesmere is like than by seeing it for yourself. Join us at our Open Morning on 26 September, from 10am–1pm, where you can explore the College, meet staff and pupils, and experience our boarding community first-hand. Whether you’re considering full, weekly or occasional boarding, our Open Day is a great opportunity to discover whether Ellesmere could be the right fit for your child. Book your visit and come and experience Ellesmere for yourself: ellesmere.com

OF THE MONTH OCTOBER 2026 Watch the Skies (12) AVAILABLE ON AMAZON PRIME, RENT OR BUY ELSEWHERE. There’s something wonderfully familiar about 2025’s Watch the Skies, an English-language Swedish sci-fi adventure that feels like someone has thrown Stranger Things, The X-Files and Interstellar into a blender and accidentally made something new. Cue strange goings-on, a child caught up in something much bigger than herself and plenty of wide-eyed looking at lights in the sky. In 1980s Sweden, 8-year-old Denise joins her father in the UFO research he carries out with members
of an amateur club. One night, her father disappears. A decade later, his empty car reappears, giving Denise hope of finding him. She joins the UFO club and together they set out to uncover the truth. The finale delivers a genuinely emotional punch, not always something you expect from a film involving time travel and UFOs. It’s pure old-fashioned with the feel of a great 1990s movie.

Can you imagine the sensation when films with SOUND were first shown? 2026 marks the 100th anniversary of when the first big one hit the screen. There’d been experiments with recorded discs being played alongside films but embedding sound - pioneered by the three Warner Brothers in America - changed everything. The Jazz Singer with Al Jolson is celebrated as the first real full feature with sound in 1927 - but the ball was set rolling the previous year by the romantic and actionpacked epic Don Juan, filmed with the wordless grace of the silent screen but with music and sound effects added. When you take a look at this month’s schedule for Oswestry’s community cinema - www.maonacinema. com - think of those excited pioneers from that low-tech time 100 years ago who produced what we now take for granted, from the cinema screen to the little videos of everyday life we take on our phones!

introducing the Blue lantern sessions at hermon chapel Hermon Arts at Hermon Chapel, Oswestry will be collaborating this autumn with husband and wife team, Katie and James McGregor, the Wrexham-based folk-pop duo ‘Igloo Hearts’ featured on Y Llais (S4C) and The Piano (Channel 4) to bring their Blue Lantern Sessions to the Chapel on the first Sunday of the month (October-December). After two years of sold-out shows at Storyhouse theatre in Chester, this acclaimed live music series lovingly curated by Igloo Hearts, has built a reputation for presenting some of the finest artists from the UK folk, Americana, roots and acoustic scene in an intimate, Jools Holland-inspired setting. The first Blue Lantern session (4 October) features the Liverpool singer-songwriter Robert Vincent
Igloo Hearts
who is one of UK’s most celebrated Americana and roots artists. Winner of the UK song of the year (2025) after previous wins with the Album and Artist of the year at the Uk Americana Music Association Awards. The second session on 1 November, features the internationally recognised musician and multidisciplinary artist Rachel Croft performs. She is known for her powerful vocals, cinematic songwriting, and electrifying stage presence. Her music is featured on Netflix, the BBC and has premiered
on major global outlets including CMT (USA). The final Blue lantern session this year will be on 17 December in a Christmas special led by BBC Radio’s Mark Radcliffe and friends (‘Radco’). They will make a genial meander through twenty-five years of music by Radcliffe’s previous bands such as The Family Mahone, Foes and Galleon Blast picking out songs from their “less-than-illustrious” back catalogue for a relaxed, ageappropriate re-appraisal! BOOkS An UnbelievAble inheritAnce By Peter Bevington The Quinta dates back to around 1800 when the owner of the estate was a member of a leading English aristocratic family with famous royal, military and political connections. The full story, available for the first time, is a fascinating plot with many twists and turns. Since opening in 1985, The Quinta Christian Centre has done its share in putting Oswestry on the world map with over half a million residential visitors and its extensive global network. The Quinta story reveals a rich tapestry of insights spanning two centuries, from the worlds of leading aristocrats and politicians to that of troubled city children and many ordinary people giving their best. It is provocative and challenging as it grapples with issues relevant today. This not-for-profit book is available on Amazon and locally at the reduced price of £7.50 at The Oswestry Christian Bookshop. Details of The Quinta conference facilities can be found at www.quinta.org. One of OM’s two ships that normally visit ports across the world is in Liverpool from Oct 22 - Nov 10. chAse to the cUt By Dave Andrews In Chase to the Cut, one man is attacked in his hotel room on the outskirts of Oswestry and another is murdered in Ellesmere during its annual Winter Festival’s Lantern Parade. It’s up to Detective Chief Inspector Gary Llewelyn Probert and his team to discover whether there’s a connection between the two incidents and catch whoever is responsible. The complex investigation throws up a mysterious link with the Beatles, especially John Lennon. DCI Probert, as if he didn’t have enough on his plate, also needs to deal with the fact that one of his colleagues is developing an unwelcome romantic interest in him. Oswestry author Dave Andrews has recently published his fifteenth book. Chase to the Cut is the final novel in his Inspector Probert trilogy of murder mysteries set in the Oswestry area. Chase to the Cut and Dave’s other books are available in Booka, Siop Cwlwm, Oswestry Library or direct from Dave at daveauthor54@gmail.com Chase to the Cut costs £9.99.

Sam with his Great Taste award
It’s The Cruffin Man
If you haven’t tried a cruffin yet, local baker Sam Widnall is hoping to change that. Part croissant, part muffin, crispy on the outside and soft in the middle, the cruffin is at the heart of Sam’s Gobowen-based business, Widnall Bakery – and it’s something Sam has become well known for in Oswestry since launching his bakery and now has the nickname, ‘The Cruffin Man’. Behind these unusual pastries is an accomplished pastry chef with years of experience, including a stint on television. Originally from the West Midlands and now living and working in Gobowen, Sam’s love of baking began with his late grandma and memories of making birthday cakes. But it was working a job at a golf club in Stourbridge that first suggested pastry might become much more than an interest for him. Tasked with producing huge quantities of sausage rolls for functions, Sam discovered not only that people loved what he made, but that pastry was something he was particularly good at. His career eventually brought him to this part of the country, where he joined the team at five-star country house hotel Palé Hall in Wales, working as a pastry chef under Gareth Stevenson. It was here that Sam developed the finer skills of professional pastry making and cemented his passion for it. In 2019, that experience also took him onto Bake Off: The Professionals, where Sam competed, reaching the semi-finals. Last August, Sam decided to put those years of experience into something of his own and launched Widnall Bakery, producing sweet pastries and traditional cakes to order, with gluten-free and vegan options also available. However, it’s his cruffins that have become his real speciality. Made using a croissantstyle process, cruffins combine The cruffin cupboard the characteristics

of a croissant with the shape and more substantial texture of a muffin. They remain light, but have a denser bite than a traditional croissant, with crisp layers giving way to a soft centre. Sam changes his selection of flavours throughout the year, giving customers something new to discover, while larger orders can also provide an opportunity for flavours to be customised. Perhaps most remarkable is how they are made. Sam talks us through it. “While larger bakeries may rely on specialist machinery and laminators to produce pastry at scale, I make the cruffins by hand. Apart from my trusty KitchenAid mixers helping with the bulk dough, I’ve kept the process traditional.” For Sam, who is deaf, working this way also brings a very personal connection to his baking. “I can focus all of the energy of the dough, as well as my own, into the product,” he explains. “I believe that love shows within my cruffins – authentically made, authentically Widnall.” Currently a small independent business, Widnall Bakery sells at various markets and events, while customers can also order for collection or delivery. Sam welcomes orders from both individuals and businesses, whether you fancy something different for the weekend, need treats for an occasion or are looking for pastries to serve to your own customers. As the bakery has grown, Sam uses lots of locally sourced ingredients and supports the British farmer. All the jams and curds are homemade using fresh homegrown produce and not an additive in sight. Just two years into the business and Sam has recently won the 2-Star Great Taste Award for his Plum Crumble Cruffin. Widnall Bakery has also been nominated for ‘Bakery of the Year West Midlands’ with My Local Awards. Amazing news! For now, however, his focus is on introducing more local people to genuinely handmade pastry – and giving Oswestry something a little different to enjoy. As Sam puts it: “A good cruffin can turn any bad day into a good one.” Get in touch via emailing s.j.widnall@gmail.com or by following on Facebook @widnall.bakery or Instagram @widnall.bakery

Pumpkin chilli con carne This fright-night feast isn’t just for Halloween – it’s the perfect winter warmer the whole family will love. Serves 4 Preparation time 20 minutes Cooking time 1 hour
IngredIents • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •
1 small pumpkin or butternut squash 2 tbsp vegetable oil, plus extra to drizzle Salt and black pepper 500g beef mince 1 small onion, peeled and diced 1 green pepper, deseeded and diced 1 tbsp tomato purée 1 x 400g tin kidney beans, drained and rinsed 1 x 500g carton passata 1 tsp chilli powder (heat of your choice) ½ tbsp dark brown soft sugar 1 tsp yeast extract 1 x 400g tin chopped tomatoes 700g baby potatoes 1x 300ml tub crème fraîche 30g watercress, finely chopped
Method
1. Preheat the oven to 180°C, fan 160°C, gas mark 4. 2. Peel and halve the pumpkin (or butternut squash) and scoop out the seeds. Dice half of the pumpkin into 1cm cubes and reserve. Chop the remaining pumpkin into large chunks, place in an oven tray, drizzle with oil and season. Roast in the preheated oven for approximately 25 minutes or until cooked through. 3. Meanwhile, place a large pan on a medium-high heat. Add the oil and heat until beginning to smoke. Add the minced beef and fry until browned. Drain the beef onto some kitchen paper. 4. Turn the heat down to medium. Add the beef back to the pan, then add in the onion, diced pumpkin and green pepper, cooking until the onions are translucent. Stir in the tomato purée and cook for a further minute before adding the kidney beans, passata, chilli powder, sugar, yeast extract and chopped tomatoes. Cover the pan with a tight-fitting lid and simmer for 1 hour. 5. Place the potatoes in an oven tray, drizzle with vegetable oil and season. Roast in the oven for 30-40 minutes, or until cooked through and crisp on the outside. 6. Once the roasted pumpkin is cooked, remove from the oven and place into a blender. Add a ladleful of liquid from the chilli and blend until smooth. Add to the simmering pan and stir through. 7. Mix together the crème fraîche and watercress, and season to taste. 8. Divide the potatoes between four bowls. Add a ladleful of chilli and serve with a generous dollop of crème fraîche.

Money Saving Tips from OsNosh by Bex Syrett

IngredIents • • • • • • • • •
175g unsalted butter, softened, plus extra for greasing 60g soft light brown sugar 60g caster sugar 1 tsp vanilla extract 1 egg, beaten 125g plain flour 1 tsp baking powder A pinch of salt 200g chocolate chips (try a mix of milk, dark and white) and broken chocolate, or just use chocolate chips
We are now in Autumn and the long hot summer is behind us. However, the summer drought has bought many challenges to farmers and we the consumers, will be experiencing price rises as a result of poor harvests both at home and abroad. More reason then, to think about cutting down on food waste and making the most of what is in the fridge. If you are lucky enough to have a veg plot or a fruit tree in your garden, you may have been busy making jams and chutneys or freezing your produce. However, if that isn’t an option for you, it’s good to consider alternative approaches. If you notice at the supermarket or your local fruit and veg shop, a good price for vegetables or fruit, why not buy up a load and batch cook meals such as soups or stews. One of our customers at OsNosh pointed her phone at the vegetables she had bought then asked AI for a recipe. Our customer then went on to make a ragu which she said was delicious! Homemade jams or chutneys make a great gift at Christmas. The market stalls in Oswestry may be happy to give you a cheaper price for their produce
Method
1. Preheat the oven to 200°C, fan 180°C, gas mark 6. Grease and line a 24cm round cake tin or ovenproof frying pan with baking parchment. 2. Using an electric whisk, beat together the softened butter, sugars and vanilla extract in a mixing bowl until combined. Add the egg and then stir in the flour, baking powder and salt. Do not overmix. Fold in the chocolate chips. 3. Spoon the batter into the prepared tin or pan, pressing it to the edges, and bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes until golden brown. 4. Leave to cool. When cool, remove from the tin or pan and cut into wedges to serve.

Health with Dr Paul Middleton
Humans are exposed to between 2,000 and 6,000 antigens every day
OP EN
Your immune system is amazing, and amazingly complex. It can recognise foreign, potentially nasty, invaders (the antigens of our title) and mobilise a vast array of different cellular mechanisms to protect you. Sometimes this involves being able to destroy your own cells – ones that have perhaps contracted a virus. However, like most of our body systems, it is not perfect: it can go rogue and attack your own healthy cells causing what is termed autoimmune disease. There are over 140 of these diseases affecting 1 in every 10 of us in our lifetime. It is very likely you know someone with type I diabetes mellitus, psoriasis, Hashimoto’s thyroid disease, coeliac disease or MS, let alone the other 130 odd, rarer ones. So why does this happen? I hear you ask. These illnesses are more common in women and many have a genetic element that can be provoked by environmental triggers, like certain infections,

exposure to certain chemicals, smoking and stress. You may be surprised to hear that your gut is a major part of your immune system: a healthy gut has about 38 trillion bugs in it, all in a balance contributing to your body health! Sometimes, perhaps after a course of antibiotics, this balance is disturbed and your health deteriorates. Many autoimmune diseases are quite rare and difficult to diagnose: your doctor might need your help for the penny to drop! Making a list of symptoms with a timeline can help, knowing your family history and being prepared to ask for another opinion may be wise. I had a few patients with very rare autoimmune diseases. Some of them definitely knew more about the disease than I did! We were sort of partners in its care. The British Autoimmune Support and Awareness (ASA) foundation was set up in 2022 and seeks to raise the profile of these rare, and not so rare, diseases that are still poorly understood.

Health
What “Healthy” Really Means As a relatively new member of the team at Coach House Fitness, I was delighted to be asked to write my first column for Oswestry Life. I wanted to focus on something that has shaped my own fitness journey and the message I hope to share as a personal trainer: Ffion, PT & Fitness Instructor what does it really mean to be healthy? Social media has created an unrealistic idea of what the “perfect” body should look like. We constantly see edited photos, carefully chosen angles and unrealistic standards. It can be difficult not to compare ourselves and feel as though we are never quite good enough. But health isn’t about looking “perfect”. Health is about having the energy to enjoy life, the strength to do the things you love and the confidence to feel comfortable in your own body. It is about feeling good on the inside, not simply looking good on the outside. Sometimes taking care of your health means going to
the gym, lifting weights or going for a run. But it can also mean taking a walk, getting enough sleep or enjoying a meal with family and friends. We also need to change the way we think about nutrition. Food is not something we need to earn, and exercise should not be used as punishment for eating. Our bodies need food for energy, strength and everyday life. A healthy lifestyle should include enjoyment, not guilt. The fitness industry can make being healthy seem complicated, expensive and intimidating. But it doesn’t have to be. You don’t need fancy gym wear, supplements or equipment to make positive changes. Small, realistic habits can have a greater impact over time. Instead of chasing the “perfect” body, perhaps we should focus on a better life. Move because you enjoy feeling strong. Eat because your body needs fuel. Rest because your body deserves recovery. Health is not about becoming someone else. It’s about becoming the healthiest version of you. To learn more, visit www.coachhousefitness.net, or to book a free 30-minute consultation and gym trial, email us at info@coachhousefitness.net.

Woods Orthotics celebrates 5 years It’s hard to believe that Woods Orthotics has now been based in Oswestry for nearly five years, and that they’ve been in their current location for two and a half years. They are an orthotist-led clinic providing orthotic care for people experiencing pain, mobility difficulties or balance issues. Orthotics encompasses a wide range of devices, from head to toe, designed to support joints and limbs, improve function and reduce pain. With on-site manufacturing facilities and trusted orthotic partners, they can provide an extensive range of devices for the whole body. “Since moving into the town, we’ve been overwhelmed by the support we’ve received from the local community. It’s a real testament to the wonderful people of Oswestry and the local businesses, who all do so much to support one another,” explains Tom, Co-owner. “Our journey from full-time employment within the NHS to working as independent, self-employed clinicians has been challenging but thoroughly rewarding. We’ve learnt an enormous amount along the way and have really enjoyed being able to take full control over the way we work and the service we’re able to provide to our patients.” There have been some big developments in the clinic offering over the past few years, including modernised manufacturing processes using CNC milling and 3D printing. They’ve also made significant developments in their gait analysis technology, including digital foot pressure assessment and analysis, alongside highresolution video recording. These technologies have given Tom and Ffion greater accuracy and control throughout the assessment process, allowing them to refine their orthotic prescriptions and the orthotics they provide. “It’s been fantastic to see such a wide range of people coming through our doors, from children as young as
Tom and Ffion one year old through to patients in their 90s. We’re also seeing people travel to us from further afield, which we’re incredibly grateful for,” says Ffion. Looking ahead, Tom and Ffion are excited about continuing to develop the clinic and expand the services they can offer. Currently, they’re working towards certification to provide cranial remoulding helmets for babies with plagiocephaly, as well as bracing for pectus carinatum and pectus excavatum to help manage chest wall deformities. They will be sharing more information about these new services later in the year. “We’d like to take this opportunity to say a huge thank you to everyone who has supported Woods Orthotics over the past five years. Whether you’ve recommended us to a friend or family member, visited the clinic, worked with us, or simply supported us along the way, we really do appreciate it. Here’s to the next chapter!” – Tom and Ffion To find out more visit www.woodsorthotics.com, call 01691 592156, or email info@woodsorthotics.com. Stay Strong, Steady & Independent into Older Age Given how much we spend sitting down these days, driving, working and resting, finding things that will help us keep our mobility into our later years, is critical. Gus Reid is a movement and consciousness enthusiast and runs two weekly movement classes in Oswestry, at Open Space Studios. “I’m fascinated with the body and how we can improve our health and expand our consciousness through movement and questioning the overlooked-obvious,” Gus says. The Saturday class, called Gustamove, is a very varied class open to everyone, practicing different ways of embodying the principles of an effortlessly effective body - and therefore a satisfying relationship to life. Gus explains what the classes look like: “We work with balance, coordination, rhythm, groundedness and moving from the centre. We

also play games that sharpen attention, focus and present moment awareness - solving movementpuzzles with our bodies.” Monday’s class is called Aging Gracefully and is aimed at pensioners in their prime. This class focuses on fall prevention and falling safely strategies, balance, coordination, nervous system regulation, vestibular training and more. Gus’ goal is to keep the aging population independent and mobile as late into life as possible. The number one cause of people going into nursing homes are falls and loss of independence. Through lived experience and knowledge, Gus has found his class attendees find the task-oriented training, games, mobility drills and coordination skills engaging and reflect everyday movements. They also compliment banded exercises

usually prescribed by physical therapists. “If there’s been injury, we want to get to the point where we are stronger in that joint than we were pre-injury. If some exercises don’t resonate with a client I can quickly pivot, never losing sight of their goals.” To find out more email gus@gusreid.com or follow on Instagram @gustamove or Facebook @gustamove. 1:1 coaching services are available – speak to Gus for information.

“I wish I had made that first call years ago.” A patient who had not seen a dentist in nine years, on what finally changed her mind HOW LONG HAD IT BEEN?
WHAT WAS THE FIRST VISIT LIKE?
Nine years. And that is the part nobody warns you about. The longer you leave it, the harder it gets to go back. It stops being about your teeth and starts being about the embarrassment.
Nothing like I had built it up to be. Nobody lectured me. They explained what they could see and what it would cost before anything was done. That was the part that got me. Just knowing.
WHAT WERE YOU ACTUALLY AFRAID OF?
WAS THERE A MOMENT IT CHANGED FOR YOU?
Being judged. I had a picture in my head of somebody looking into my mouth and sighing. I was more frightened of that than of anything they might have to do.
WHAT MADE YOU FINALLY PICK UP THE PHONE? My daughter asked me why I never smile properly in photographs. I did not have an answer for her.
WHERE DID YOU GO? Thomas Dental in Oswestry, next to the Peugeot garage. I had driven past it hundreds of times.
When he said it could be sorted. Not that it was fine, because it was not. Just that it could be sorted. I sat in the car afterwards and cried, which sounds ridiculous.
DID YOU NEED MUCH DOING? Some. But less than there would have been if I had left it another two years. That is the part that stays with me. Every year I waited made the list longer.
AND THE COST? Less than I had feared. I went onto the monthly plan, so now it is one amount that never changes. Nineteen pounds ninety. They broke it down for me and it works out at sixty six pence a day for private care, and I can usually get in the same day or that week when I need to.
WHY THE PLAN AND NOT JUST PAY AS YOU GO? Because I know myself. If the bill is a surprise, I will find a reason not to book. If it goes out on the first of the month with everything else, I just go.
WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO SOMEONE STILL PUTTING IT OFF? Make the call. Everything after the call was easy. It was the nine years before it that cost me.
Has it been a while? Six months, six years or sixteen. It changes nothing about the welcome you get. Oswestry life

Is boredom the answer to less stress, more clarity and creativity? by Jenna Ward, Life Coach and Reiki Practitioner. Some days I long for the feeling of boredom staring into space, nothing particular on my mind, nothing pressing to be done, no irrelevant question to answer simply because I thought of it. Remember when you’d ponder a question and, aside from a potential debate, that would be that? Because there was no way to clarify it, so it didn’t really matter anyway. Now, with the answer quite literally in our hands, pondering, debating and wondering seem to happen less. What did you used to do when waiting to meet a friend, or when they
It’s good to be home
went to the loo, leaving you alone at the table? I used to stare into space, people-watch, daydream. I challenge myself to do this now because I don’t much like being on my phone, even though what once felt natural now feels somewhat awkward. This downtime is important. Boredom is something we need - it’s rest for our brains. In this downtime our brain does important work: processing experiences, consolidating memories, reflecting on lessons learned and how they might be used in future, daydreaming, and coming up with creative solutions and ideas. Think about how many times you’ve solved a problem or had a great idea in the shower or on a walk, your mind free to wander whilst your body is engaged in a mindless task.
Boredom can also support our nervous system. The constant consumption that comes from scrolling keeps our bodies in a state of mild, chronic alertness. Boredom can act as a ‘circuit breaker’ - without constant input, the sympathetic nervous system (fight, flight, freeze) can quieten, making space for parasympathetic recovery (rest, digest). Boredom isn’t something to fear, avoid or beat. It’s a normal part of being human. Perhaps we could change our mindset around boredom, viewing it as an opportunity to rest, reset and revive our brains, making space for calm, inspiration, creativity and answers.

Celebrating Samhain Samhain – otherwise known as Halloween is the ancient Celtic celebration of the end of the harvest and the start of Winter. approximately halfway between the autumn and winter equinox as the year transitions from light to dark, it was thought that the boundary between this and the ‘otherworld’ opened allowing spirits to pass through. not only did fairies step into the world but so did the spirits of the ancestors. death is not often spoken about in our culture, yet it is a vital part of our lives and for some, this time of year may feel particularly challenging. oswestry Bereavement Group (part of the county wide Shropshire Bereavement Group CiC) meet at the Memorial Hall, 1st Wednesday of the month 11am-1pm. Quality home care is life changing Visiting Angels North Shropshire is delighted to have been awarded an overall GOOD rating by the Care Quality Commission (CQC). The inspection recognised the high standard of care provided to clients across the region, as well as the dedication of the local office team and caregivers who support them every day. Now based in Shrewsbury, Visiting Angels continues to have strong roots in Oswestry while expanding its services across North Shropshire, helping more people access high-quality care in the comfort of their own homes. “Oswestry remains our flagship area, but our move to Shrewsbury has enabled us to reach even more people across the county who could benefit from personalised care and support,” explains Rachel Wintle, Operations Manager.
As the colder weather sets in
As autumn turns to winter, practical support can make a world of difference to older people and those living alone. At Visiting Angels, winter preparation often starts well before the cold weather arrives. The team works closely with clients and their families to help them feel safe, comfortable and ready for the months ahead. This can include helping to arrange boiler servicing and safety checks, ensuring homes are warm and energy efficient, checking that essential supplies are readily available, and helping clients unpack warmer clothing and bedding as the seasons change. For clients living in rural communities, planning ahead can be particularly important. The team develops contingency plans so that everyone involved knows how support will continue during periods of severe weather. “We want our clients to feel reassured that they are prepared, whatever the winter brings,” says Rachel. “A little planning can provide enormous peace of mind for both clients and their families.” The team can also signpost clients and relatives to local services and community resources that may help with heating costs, transport, social activities or additional support during the colder months.
Above all, regular communication ensures clients and families remain informed, connected and confident that support is always available when needed.
Companionship is vital
While practical support is important, the companionship provided by Visiting Angels is often what clients value most. Loneliness and isolation can have a significant impact on wellbeing, particularly during the darker winter months. Having a familiar face call in regularly provides reassurance, conversation and friendship alongside day-to-day assistance. Visiting Angels carefully matches clients with a small, consistent team of caregivers, allowing trusted relationships to develop over time. Many clients come to see their caregivers as an extended part of the family, enjoying the comfort and familiarity that comes from seeing people they know and trust. This person-centred approach enables people to maintain their independence, remain in their own homes and continue living life on their own terms.
Don’t wait for a crisis to hit
For many families, recognising that extra support may be needed can feel overwhelming. Whether you’re concerned about an ageing parent, a partner, or your own wellbeing, reaching out for advice is often the hardest step. At Visiting Angels, the team encourages families to start conversations about care early, before a crisis occurs. “We would much rather people pick up the phone and talk through their concerns than struggle alone,” says Rachel. “There’s absolutely no obligation. Sometimes a simple conversation helps families understand their options and feel more confident about the future. “Introducing support gradually can be a positive experience for everyone involved. It allows people to remain in control, maintain their independence and access help in a way that feels comfortable for them.” If you or a loved one could benefit from support at home, contact Visiting Angels North Shropshire on 01691 888558 or visit www.visiting-angels.co.uk/ northshropshire

Local Authority has ignored my requests to see my son who is in their care – what can I do? Q: Due to unfortunate circumstances my son had to be placed in Local Authority care. I miss him terribly and I know for sure that he will be missing me too, but I have not seen him for coming up to a year now. I have made enquiries several times with the Local Authority to ask if I can see him, but all my requests have gone unanswered. I am now desperate to arrange a visit to see him and it is affecting my mental health. What can I do? A: Your options for resolving this situation very much depend on the circumstances under which your son came to be in the care of the Local Authority and what legal Orders (if any) your son is subject to whilst in Local Authority care. If your son is subject to a final Care Order and the plan for him is one of long-term Local Authority care, then as a starting point the Local Authority do have a duty to promote contact between you and your son. There are of course times when such contact is not appropriate, for example if the Court has made an Order to set out that there should be no contact. You should be invited to Looked After Child review meetings that should take place around every six months. This is a chance for the Local Authority to review your son’s placement, education and his health, as well as other matters, and that would be an opportunity for you to ask about your contact with your son. You should set out clearly to your son’s allocated Social Worker that you want to have contact, and that your request is a formal request. Following this, if you do not receive a satisfactory response, you should arrange an appointment with a Solicitor who may be able to give you advice in relation to your next steps.

Charity urges older people to stay one step ahead of scammers Community groups across Shropshire are being invited to arrange a free talk to help older people recognise the latest digital scams and take simple steps to protect themselves. A local independent charity is encouraging people aged 55 and over to become more Scam Smart as fraudsters continue to find new ways to target people through phones, emails, text messages and the internet. Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin is offering community groups, clubs, societies and other organisations where older people meet the opportunity to invite a guest speaker to talk about current digital scams and how to avoid becoming a victim. The charity’s Scam Smart sessions provide practical, easy-to-understand advice about the types of fraud older people are likely to encounter. The sessions explain how scammers operate, the warning signs to look out for and, importantly, what people can do to protect themselves. Advice includes simple steps such as stopping and thinking before responding to an unexpected message or phone call, checking that a request is genuine, being careful about clicking links and never rushing into
sending money or sharing personal information. Jim Hawkins, Wellbeing Services Development Officer at Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin, said: “We would particularly like to hear from community groups across Shropshire where older people get together socially. Whether it’s a club, society, lunch group or another community organisation, we can come along and provide practical advice that could help members stay safer.” The charity says people do not need to be particularly confident with technology to benefit from a Scam Smart session. The talks are designed to be accessible and relevant to anyone aged 55 and over who uses a smartphone, computer, tablet or other digital device - as well as those who simply want to understand more about the scams they may encounter. For more information or to arrange a Scam Smart talk, contact Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin on 01743 233 123 or email enquiries@ageukstw.org.uk.

Miriam goes the extra mile for charity close to her heart An Oswestry solicitor is preparing to run her first marathon as she completes a year-long challenge to raise money for the Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital. Miriam Homer, a personal injury solicitor with Lanyon Bowdler, is taking on the Chester Triple - a 10K, half marathon and full marathon in the same year. Having already completed the first two events, including setting a personal best in the 10K, Miriam now has the biggest challenge ahead of her - the Chester Marathon. Miriam, who divides her time between Lanyon Bowdler’s Oswestry and Shrewsbury offices, decided to support RJAH because of the close relationship she has developed with the hospital since qualifying as a solicitor in 2023. “RJAH is one of the leading specialist orthopaedic hospitals and
has an outstanding reputation for high-quality patient care,” she says. “I have visited Horatio’s Garden in the spinal unit on several occasions to see clients and have seen firsthand how beneficial the garden is for patients. “I have also volunteered with the League of Friends in one of the hospital coffee shops and on the trolley ward rounds. It has been so rewarding to be able to assist patients and their families.” Miriam joined a local running club a couple of years ago and, after completing several half marathons, decided 2026 was the year to tackle the full distance. Training alongside a busy legal career has meant fitting long runs around work and everyday life, often with early starts at weekends. “You have to make sure your training schedule is manageable,”
Miriam Homer
Miriam says. “I appreciate that running my first marathon is a big undertaking and preparation is key, but I’m trying not to stress about it too much and to enjoy the training process.” With two races safely completed, Miriam is now focused on crossing the marathon finish line and raising as much as possible for a hospital which means a great deal to her. “I’VE GOT SAVINGS SO WHY DOESN’T IT FEEL LIKE I’M GETTING AHEAD?” On paper, you’re doing everything right. You’ve built up savings, avoided unnecessary debt and put money aside regularly. Yet despite your best efforts, perhaps it still feels as though you’re standing still financially? If that sounds familiar, you’re certainly not alone. Oswestry-based independent financial adviser, Craig Roberts, from Belgrave Wincham explains why it’s not always about saving more, but about making sure your money is working in the right ways. The comfort of keeping money in cash For many people, saving money means putting it into a savings account and leaving it there. It feels safe, familiar and easy to access – and having a financial safety net is an important part of any financial plan. However, over time, this could mean that your finances struggle to keep up with the rising cost of living, leaving you feeling like you’re no further forward. “Cash has an important role to play, particularly when it comes to having money available for short-term plans or emergencies,” explains Craig. “But it’s also worth thinking about what you want your money to achieve and whether your savings are helping you get there.” Giving your money a purpose This is where options beyond cash savings can come in. Among these, include things like investments and pensions, which may offer the potential for growth over the longer term. Craig continues: “The key is understanding what each part of your money is there for. A good financial plan is about balance and making sure that your finances help you live the life that you want. “For some savers, this can understandably feel like a big step, particularly when they’ve spent years carefully building up their cash reserves. “But it doesn’t have to mean choosing between growth and safety. With expert support, it’s possible to build on the security you already have and help put your finances in a stronger position for the future.” For a free 60-minute consultation call Belgrave Wincham Independent Financial Planners - 01691 886554. Step into comfort
Moth-resistant, easy to clean and sustainable, this soft carpet is made from 100% high-quality polyester and can be recycled into other products at the end of its life. Suitable for all rooms. Echo Co-RE carpet in Mossdale, from £102.25 per square metre, Alternative Flooring. www.alternativeflooring.com
How to choose a carpet you’ll love for years to come. Soft, warm carpet has firmly reclaimed its place in modern interiors. Insulating and sound-absorbing, modern carpets have also benefited from technical advances in durability, stain resistance and even sustainability.
Consider how the room will be used
The best carpet will always be the one that suits the way you use each room. Do you want to make a statement in a reception area or create a relaxed retreat? Match carpet performance to likely wear and tear. The deeper the pile and the more luxurious the finish, the greater care the carpet needs.
Choose colours and patterns wisely
If you are redecorating, it’s a good idea to choose the carpet first. Pale colours can enhance a feeling of space but may show stains, while dark colours create drama but can highlight dust. Neutrals co-ordinate easily and evoke calm and tranquillity. Patterns are great for disguising marks, but can be “busy”. A good compromise could be a flecked design, or a herringbone or narrow stripe. Study samples in situ in different lights. In a hard-wearing twist style and 100% polypropylene, this carpet is suitable for the bedroom, lounge, hall and stairs. Camilla carpet in Pale Sky, £59.99 per square metre, Tapi. www.tapi.co.uk
Texture is important, too
A carpet’s texture has an impact on how long it lasts. Loop carpets are hard-wearing – though beware of pet claws. Twist piles are also durable and can be used anywhere, while softer Saxony is popular for bedrooms.
Don’t ignore underlay
If you are replacing a carpet, never keep the old underlay and always buy the best quality possible. It will make the carpet feel more luxurious while reducing wear and tear, heat loss and sound.
Think long term
A carpet can last up to 15 years. While statement carpets tend to date quickly, neutral colours with an interesting texture will stand the test of time.
Find your fibre
Natural fibres include wool, coir, sisal and seagrass. Naturally flame-retardant and resilient to compression, wool is warm, soft, durable and does not stain easily. Synthetic carpets are made from nylon, polypropylene or polyester. Often budget-friendly, they are hard-wearing, stain-resistant and easy to clean. Mixes: To enhance performance, give a particular feel or reduce price, fibres may be blended. The recommended combination is 80% wool with 20% nylon.

Practical Magic After such a hot summer you might find yourself craving the grim weather so you can get cozy on your own terms. And autumn provides an abundance of opportunities to get cozy especially in our homes. Decorating your home for autumn doesn’t have to be dominated by a Halloween theme, instead you can go all out on natural elements like simple pumpkins and warm textures over bats, skeletons and spiders, but you can also easily add in witchy elements without going for the scare tactic. This autumnal edit is inspired by revisiting nostalgic themes from the 90’s especially from classic autumnal movies like Practical Magic. So, get yourself a warm coloured throw blanket, decorate your surfaces with pumpkins and herbs, curl up in your chair, light a candle and fully lean into that practical magic vibe.

New Name for a Growing Local Business A familiar Oswestry business is entering a new chapter, with Oswestry Handyman & Gardening Services becoming Charmley Property Services. While local customers will begin to notice a new name and branding, the people behind the business remain very much the same. For owner Steve Charmley, the change reflects just how much the business has developed since its early days. What began predominantly as a local handyman and gardening service has gradually grown into something much broader, with Steve and son Jack, now carrying out a wide range of property maintenance, improvements and renovation work across the area. Increasingly, this has also included working with local estate and letting agents, dealing with property maintenance and work orders alongside jobs for homeowners and landlords. As the scope of the work grew, it became clear that the old name no longer told the whole story. “Handyman and Gardening Services described the business when it started, but today we undertake a much wider range of work,” explains Steve. “The new name is really about reflecting the business we have already become.” Rather than opting for another generic business name, Steve decided to put the family name above the door. “Charmley Property Services not only gives the business a stronger identity but also represents its future.” Steve’s son Jack is increasingly working alongside him, enabling them to take on larger jobs and projects while maintaining the personal approach that has helped the business grow in the first place. Longer term, the ambition is to build Charmley Property Services into a family business that can continue to develop beyond Steve himself. For existing customers, however, perhaps the most important message is that very little is changing. It is the same business, same people and same service. 78

Steve and Jack
Existing jobs will continue as normal, while homeowners, landlords, estate agents and letting agents will still deal directly with Steve and Jack. What customers may notice is the investment taking place behind the scenes. Alongside the new website, professional email addresses, branding, vehicles and paperwork, Charmley Property Services has invested significantly in new systems to manage enquiries, quotations, job scheduling, estate-agent work orders and customer communication. It’s all part of creating a business capable of taking on more substantial property projects without losing the straightforward, local service customers value. For homeowners, it also means the Charmley name is one worth remembering when that list of jobs around the house starts getting longer. Whether it’s general property maintenance, those improvements you’ve been meaning to tackle, work required on a rental property or a larger renovation project, Steve and Jack can provide a local point of contact from initial enquiry through to completion. To get in touch, call 07453 233 853 or email steve@charmleypropertyservices.co.uk

Gardening
October in the garden by Graham Mitchell October gardens are usually associated with orange and yellow foliage fading in the softer autumn light. It is a mellow month for harvesting apples, pears, late raspberries, pumpkins and squash. This year, however, the season arrived early, with autumn colour appearing in late August. A summer of constant watering quickly emptied the water butts, before storms refilled them within hours. Misty mornings and the risk of an early frost signal a slower pace. Although growth is easing, October is one of the most useful months for preparing the garden for winter and planning next year’s display. It is becoming clear that the weather will increasingly determine what I grow and where I place it. October will therefore be a month for planning ahead. Because my garden is mainly a courtyard filled with containers, the sack truck will be busy. Several Japanese acers suffered in the heat and wind, so I will move them to more sheltered positions. Even in the town centre, wind scorch can leave foliage brown and frazzled. Next year, I will use much larger pots for my displays and add more mulch. Small containers, especially terracotta ones, dry out quickly and are easily missed
Agapanthus
during the evening watering round. I will also seek out more drought-tolerant plants. Agapanthus performed wonderfully this year, while geraniums and begonias coped well; many other bedding plants needed far more attention. There is still time to plant. Container-grown trees, shrubs and roses, along with native hedging, can be planted now. Hawthorn, hazel and holly complement our location and provide wildlife with food and shelter. Spring bulbs, including daffodils, crocuses and alliums, can also go into borders, lawns or pots. Prepare tender plants before the first hard frost. Move pelargoniums and other vulnerable pots under cover and protect borderline-hardy specimens with fleece. Once frost has blackened dahlia foliage, lift the tubers, let them dry and store them in a cool, frost-free place.

6 weird and wonderful facts about gardens 1. Microscopic munching in soil creates the energy that flows between plants. This plays an important role in the carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus cycle, which underpins life. Studies suggest that in just one spoonful of soil there could be more life than there are people on Earth. It includes bacteria, viruses, fungi, archaea (single-celled microorganisms), and protozoa (single-celled microorganisms which contain a nucleus). 2. One of the highest-maintenance plants in UK gardens is the hybrid tea rose. Roses require pruning twice a year. Repeat-flowering varieties need to be deadheaded. Diseases including blackspot and mildew are common. But more informal shrub or species roses are more appropriate for a naturalistic, easy-going style of gardening. 3. Buttercups are poisonous. They can be fatal to grazing animals, including horses and cattle. All
Buttercups are poisonous
species of Ranunculus contain an oil which can cause severe mouth irritation and stomach upset if eaten. Most animals avoid them. 4. There’s a poison garden in the UK. This is at The Alnwick Garden in Northumberland. The Chelsea Physic Garden in London also includes a dedicated area for poisonous plants, sited next to plants that have healing capabilities. 5. The dandelion was once a highly useful plant. Dandelion roots were cooked as a vegetable and leaves were used in salads. The flowers would be used in wine and the dye could stain wool. 6. There are around 200 slugs in an average square metre of garden.
