Thousands of Pumpkins Head to Park Hall

A popular farm attraction in Oswestry is preparing to open Pumpkinfest during October. Park Hall Countryside Experience has 3,500 pumpkins heading to the farm to kick off its annual autumn event.

Pumpkinfest will be held on October 3rd, 4th, 5th, 10th, 11th, 12th, 17th, 18th, and 19th October and then daily between October 24th and November 2nd during half term.

Every paying child will receive a free pumpkin to carve in the farm’s pumpkin shed, which can be taken home at the end of the day. There will be Halloween activities around the farm, including Pumpkin Alley, The Little Scare House, and a Spooky Trail. The team will get handson, leading games of ‘pass the pumpkin’ and the ‘mummy wrap’.

Richard Powell, joint owner–director of Park Hall Countryside Experience, said families love getting in the Halloween spirit at their annual event. “Pumpkinfest is a big hit with families, where we have just the right amount of spookiness that isn’t too scary for our young visitors. Thousands of pumpkins will be waiting to be picked from our large indoor pumpkin shed to be lovingly carved in the adjacent shed and taken home, and parents can enjoy leaving all the mess with us!

“We’ll have lots of Halloween fun, with singing pumpkins and games going on around the farm. Access to the whole farm attraction is included with tickets to Pumpkinfest. Indoors, we have our Little Oswestry Role Play village, sand and water play, brickworks, a demon drop slide, under 4’s sensory play area, music room, science area, planet room, multiple museums, and a chance to meet the rabbits and guinea pigs.

“Or take in the fresh autumn air outside with the Crazy Farm Adventure Course, Woodland Adventure Play Area, zip wire, Big Blue Tractor Ride, see the rabbits in Burrow Land, the goats in their playground, the pigs racing, and lots more animals. We promise a family Halloween day out to remember.”

Advance online tickets are £2 cheaper than on the gate. Purchase tickets at www.parkhallfarm.co.uk

Good news for Oswestry about the Illuminated Tractor Run

The annual run, organised with the Whittington & Oswestry Young Farmers Club and Lingen Davies Cancer Fund is in memory of Will Roberts of Pennant Farm in Gobowen who sadly died from a brain tumour on 12 December 2022. It will now start with the parade driving through Oswestry on the outward journey as well as returning through Oswestry.

Spokesman Mike Lade said, “The change of route is hoped to give more of the Oswestry residents and their little ones a greater opportunity to see the spectacle of the illuminated tractors and enjoy the sound of their air horns in the town. We will of course still be going through surrounding villages and towns on our revised route of Morda, West Felton, Ruyton XI Towns, Baschurch, Burlton, Cockshut, Ellesmere, Duddleston Heath, Ifton Heath, St Martins, Gobowen, Whittington, then Oswestry again to return to the Livestock Market soon after 8.30pm ish.”

Once again there will be the Junior Tractor Run within the Market area so it’s fun for the whole family.

Last year the run raised £20,000 for the Lingen Davies Cancer Fund based in Shrewsbury for the treatment of local people. The organiser’s aim is to at least match that figure. That’s a total of £32,000 so far for the last two years of the run!

More details are to come and the online entry form to register tractors will be released in November. The run takes place from Oswestry Livestock Market on Saturday 13 November at 5pm.

Creating Space to Learn and Play: Aico’s Project SOS Supports Woodside Primary School

Aiming to support the local community, Oswestry-based Aico’s Project SOS has returned for its third year. For 2025, the chosen winner was Woodside Primary School, Oswestry, which applied in the hopes of improving their outdoor spaces ahead of the children’s return in September.

Laura Ellis, Woodside Primary School’s Operations Manager, commented, “We applied for Project SOS because the amount of money we have to spend on maintenance is quite small, so this support really means a lot to us.”

Over the course of a week, a team of 22 Aico colleagues dedicated their time to transforming the school’s outdoor spaces. The work included extensive weeding, trimming hedges and bushes, repainting benches, storage sheds, play sheds, and refreshing tired areas to create a brighter, more welcoming environment. They also carried out general tidy-ups and enhancements to outdoor reading and play spaces, ensuring the children will have a safe and inviting area to enjoy when they return in September.

The impact of these efforts has been warmly received by the school community, with staff remarking on how valuable the improvements will be for pupils’ wellbeing and enjoyment of outdoor learning.

“After receiving ten fantastic applications from community groups, charities and schools, we were delighted to select Woodside Primary School as our Project SOS partner this year. From the outset, it was clear that our support could make a real difference to their children’s learning. With so many schools facing

increasing challenges due to restricted funding, being able to give our time and effort has been especially meaningful. The improvements to the outdoor learning areas have created more welcoming spaces where children of all ages can thrive as they begin the new school year.

It has been a real pleasure to support the school in this way.” Jane Pritchard, CSR and Community Engagement Lead, Aico.

Laura Ellis added that the project’s impact will be felt immediately, saying, “It’s such an amazing space for the children to use in September.”

Now in its third year, Project SOS continues to demonstrate Aico’s ongoing commitment to supporting the local community through hands-on volunteering and meaningful, sustainable impact.

Connecting People Through Food

OsNosh is a place where food brings people together, where community is built through kindness, and where no one is turned away. Based at The Centre on Oak Street, OsNosh is a Community Interest Company that’s been steadily growing its reach and impact in Oswestry.

At the heart of OsNosh is a dedicated team. Donna Murdoch has been with the organisation since 2019, first as a volunteer and now as one of its directors. Donna coordinates around 40 volunteers of all ages who give their time to help OsNosh flourish. In 2024, Bex Syrett joined as a director, bringing a background in community work, catering, and public health. Together they lead a vibrant team supported by two talented cooks, Rebecca Wilmott and Jock Tyldesley, who serve up delicious meals in the OsNosh Community Café,  Rebecca also brings creative ideas to keep the centre welcoming and engaging, while Jock is known for his inventive dishes and much-loved Jock’s Hot Sauce. The garden is cared for by Lesley Wills, a biodynamic grower and wellness movement teacher, who leads volunteers in producing fruit and vegetables without chemicals.

Volunteers are the backbone of OsNosh, helping prepare and serve food, keeping the café running smoothly, collecting surplus food from local shops, and providing a friendly welcome to visitors who may be going through difficult times. The garden volunteers also play a vital role, nurturing the sensory garden and growing produce that is shared in the café or sold one local market stalls.

In April, OsNosh welcomed HRH the Duke of Edinburgh, who met volunteers and enjoyed a meal cooked with pupils from St Martins School. The team also catered for the Mayor’s Civic Dinner and a wedding, gave talks to local groups, and entered the Oswestry in Bloom competition. Over the summer, families enjoyed picnics and games in the sensory garden, an initiative supported by Wrekin Housing Trust.

The OsNosh Community Cafe has been mainly funded over the past 2 years by the Big Lottery. That funding has recently ended, and the team are now working on a plan for what the next phase of OsNosh looks like.   Thursdays will continue to be the day OsNosh and

Qube work together hosting the Lunch Club; enjoy a two-course traditional hot meal and some good company. After September, Thursdays will be the day of the weekly food share, and an opportunity to order one of our surplus produce boxes, made up of a selection of that week’s surplus.

OsNosh will also be looking at other opportunities to redistribute the food surplus to other organisations and venues in Oswestry, finding ways to support a wider number of people in the community.

More recently, funding has been provided by The Household Support Fund to provide ‘home-cooked’ style meals for the Oswestry Food Bank to redistribute to its clients.

People come to OsNosh for many reasons. Some come for an affordable hot meal, others to share food that would otherwise go to waste. Many enjoy the company and the welcoming space, while others take part in workshops from singing to healthy movement. Volunteers come to learn skills, support the community, and make friends.

Looking ahead, OsNosh is launching a consultation to understand how best to support working families who are still struggling to make ends meet. They are also planning to expand catering for local businesses, providing lunches and more jollier occasions such as weddings and birthday parties, whilst continuing to seek grant funding and community support.

You can help by supporting the share table, attend the Lunch Club (via Qube), volunteering, or supporting the upcoming crowdfunding campaign to help OsNosh as it moves forward in it’s journey. Every meal enjoyed or pound donated helps keep OsNosh’s essential work alive. And don’t forget, if you need some catering for an office lunch or other function, give us a call.

mayor’s minutes

Mayor cllr Rosie Radford

Summer in Oswestry was alive with colour, music, and community spirit. The Balloon Festival entertained crowds; from sheepdogs herding ducks to local dance groups, culminating in the magical Night Glow. I particularly enjoyed the 6am launch of balloons from Cae Glas Park. Congratulations to the organisers, partners, and volunteers, and on the funds raised for Nightingale House.

It was also a pleasure to welcome the Britain in Bloom and Heart of England in Bloom judges, showcasing our vibrant gardens, floral displays, and community pride. We eagerly await their verdicts, proud of the effort and dedication on display.

I had the joy of visiting Oswestry Allotments, a little bit of heaven filled with love, care, and shared community spirit. Awarding trophies to the most productive and creative plots was a privilege, highlighting the dedication of local growers. Equally inspiring was visiting Connect For Life, supporting residents with memory issues. Running two sessions each week, it provides companionship and engagement, and volunteers are always welcome.

The Oswestry Show celebrated farming, small businesses, and heritage, with award-winning sheep-shearing experts reminding us of our traditions. I’m especially grateful to the Show President for making my two daughters and I feel so welcome, it was an honour to attend. The Oswestry Food Festival, a partnership between the Town Council and BID, brought streets alive with smells, flavours, and creativity, a perfect summer gathering.

Amid these festivities, there were moments of reflection. Commemorating Victory in Japan Day was profoundly moving, particularly as my grandfather was a prisoner of war in Burma. Standing alongside the community to remember those who sacrificed so much reinforced the importance of peace and the value of living in a town that honours and cherishes its shared history. Looking ahead, I’m excited for Heritage Open Week, Apple Day, and the warmth and sparkle of our winter festivities. More opportunities to come together and celebrate the very best of Oswestry.

With gratitude and pride,

Rosie Radford, Mayor of Oswestry

A Safe Space to Grieve Suicide

Grief is never simple, and when a loved one dies by suicide, the loss can feel especially heavy, confusing, and isolating. In Oswestry and the surrounding areas, a peer-led self-help group is working quietly but powerfully to change that. Survivors of Bereavement by Suicide (SoBS) Oswestry, provides a safe and supportive space for people who share this unique kind of loss.

The group is run entirely by volunteers who have themselves been bereaved by suicide. This lived experience gives them a deep understanding of the complex emotions that can accompany such a loss like anger, guilt, fear, confusion, sadness, and, at times, even laughter as memories are shared. Because everyone in the room has walked a similar path, there is no need to explain or justify feelings. It is a space where emotions are welcomed, not judged.

The purpose of the group is simple but profound: to allow people to meet others who understand, to share their thoughts if they wish, and to find comfort in knowing they are not alone. It doesn’t matter whether the bereavement was recent or happened many years ago –everyone is welcome.

Sessions are held on the first Monday of every month, from 7–9pm. The meetings cover a wide area including Oswestry, Wrexham, North Wales, and surrounding communities. For privacy and safety, full details of the venue are only given once attendees have completed a GDPR form.

A friendly conversation before the meeting can help put minds at ease and ensure any particular needs are understood. For many, simply making that first call can feel daunting, and it’s perfectly normal to change your mind as the date approaches. The facilitators understand this entirely – attending for the first time is a huge step, and nobody is ever pressured to move faster than they are ready.

At the meeting itself, people can choose to say as much or as little as they wish. Other than sharing their name and who they’ve lost when new members are present, there is no expectation to speak. However, many find that once they feel the warmth of the group, they are able to open up more freely than they expected. For those who prefer to listen, that too is absolutely fine.

The atmosphere is compassionate and respectful. Tissues are close at hand, supportive ears are always available, and members are free to show as much emotion as they need. At the same time, everyone is asked to express themselves with consideration for others in the room. Confidentiality is taken seriously –what is shared in the group stays within the group.

New members are welcome to bring a supportive friend or family member if it helps them feel more comfortable, provided the group knows in advance who

will be attending. What matters most is that every person feels safe and supported.

The facilitators aren’t professional counsellors, but they have completed training through the Survivors of Bereavement by Suicide National Office. Their strength lies in their shared experience – they know the unspoken weight that comes with this type of bereavement, and they can offer empathy and understanding in ways that may not always be possible elsewhere.

SoBS Oswestry also welcomes offers of fundraising support from the community. The group relies on donations to keep providing its vital service. Anyone wishing to help in this way can get in touch via oswestry@uksobs.org.

For those living with the aftermath of suicide, it can feel as though nobody else could possibly understand. But in a quiet room, every month, people gather who do. They come together to share stories, to cry or sit in silence, and sometimes even to laugh. Above all, they come to find a little comfort and strength, in the company of others who truly understand what it means to grieve a life lost to suicide.

Those attending for the first time are encouraged to call ahead on 07930 633 388 or email oswestry@uksobs.org.

Choosing the right school

Ellesmere College combines the best of both worlds: strong traditions and a modern outlook. It’s a school that values character as much as results and prepares young people not just for exams, but for being life ready!

Nestled in the heart of the Shropshire countryside, Ellesmere College is more than just a school – it’s a vibrant, nurturing community where students are encouraged to thrive academically, socially, and personally. On Saturday 11th October, they are inviting families from across North Wales and beyond to experience this for themselves at their annual Open Day.

Whether you’re a day pupil, a weekly boarder, or a full boarder, life at Ellesmere is designed to be enriching, supportive, and full of opportunity. Their various boarding options reflect the diverse needs of modern families, offering the chance to experience the benefits of a close-knit community while maintaining the right balance between school and home life.

Day pupils enjoy full access to our extensive cocurricular programme and facilities, while weekly boarders benefit from the structure and camaraderie of boarding during the week, returning home for weekends. Full boarders immerse themselves in the full Ellesmere experience, forming lifelong friendships and enjoying a vibrant calendar of activities, trips, and events.

Ellesmere has long been known for its commitment to developing the whole child. From the youngest pupils in Lower School to Sixth Form students preparing for university and beyond, their approach is rooted in a balance of academic rigour, creative expression, and personal growth. Ellesmere offers an education that prepares young people not just for exams, but for life. Whether it’s through their internationally recognised

sports programmes, their thriving arts and music departments, or their innovative curriculum that includes both A-levels and the International Baccalaureate, Ellesmere offers a breadth of opportunity that is truly distinctive.

But what really sets Ellesmere apart is its atmosphere. Visitors often comment on the warmth and friendliness they feel the moment they arrive. Their students are confident, articulate, and grounded –qualities that stem from being part of a school where every individual is known and valued. The Open Day is a chance to meet these students, speak with the dedicated staff, and see first-hand how their ethos translates into everyday life.

Throughout the day, guests will enjoy guided tours of their beautiful campus, including state-of-the-art facilities, boarding houses, and the historic main building. There will be opportunities to explore classrooms, watch live demonstrations, and hear from the Head, Teachers, current pupils and parents about their Ellesmere experience. Whether you’re considering day or boarding options, or simply want to learn more about what makes the school unique, the Open Day is the perfect starting point.

Choosing the right school is one of the most important decisions a family can make. At Ellesmere, they believe that education should be inspiring, inclusive, and tailored to the individual. The school hopes you’ll join them on Saturday 11th October from 10am – 1pm (last Tour at 12pm) to discover how they bring that belief to life every day.

WHY PETS VOMIT YELLOW BILE

When a pet vomits yellow bile, often in the morning or after a long period without eating, it may be due to the stomach being empty. If it occurs soon after eating, it could be related to dietary or other health issues.

When dogs eat grass, and then throw up yellow bile, they do this to help naturally cleanse their digestive system.

Common Causes

Dietary Influences: Dietary Changes to your dog’s diet can upset their stomach, leading to the expulsion of bile.

Food Intolerance/Allergies: Some dogs may be intolerant to ingredients in their food, which can lead to vomiting bile.

Health and Environmental Factors: When their stomachs are empty, bile can irritate the stomach lining and cause vomiting.

Gastrointestinal irritation from ingesting something unusual or toxic: Acid reflux can cause the stomach’s contents, including bile, to flow back into the esophagus, resulting in yellow vomiting, especially in the morning or after napping.

Motion Sickness

Underlying Health Conditions, eg liver problems, pancreatitis, or gastrointestinal diseases.

Natural Treatments

Meadowsweet: Good for acidity, over-reactivity, and pain in the stomach. Ideal for dogs who are thin and lacking vitality.

Dried Meadowsweet: 150mg for every 10kg of body weight, twice daily with food.

Tincture: 1 drop per 5kg, twice daily before eating. Dilute in water.

Chamomile: Reduces spasms and inflammation in the digestive tract, prevents acid reflux.

Dosage: Infusion with 2 Tbsp chamomile to 1 cup water. Steep 30 -60 mins. Give 1-2 tsp for extra small, 3 tsp for small, 1-2 Tbsp for large, 3-4 Tbsp for extra large dogs, 2-3 times a day.

Marshmallow Root: Calms the stomach and soothes the gastrointestinal tract.

Dosage: as chamomile.

Dietary Adjustments for Prevention and Care

• Feed smaller, regular meals

• Give your dog a bedtime snack

• Introduce new foods to your dog gradually.

• If symptoms continue, or you have concerns, visit your Vet ASAP!

Like so many, we have been affected by cancer

Rachel’s much loved brother Matthew Turner died in December 2019 aged just 44. He was treated at Lingen Davies Cancer Centre many times during his cancer battle. Rachel often went and sat with him whilst he had his treatment and during this time she saw the amazing staff working so hard to help all the patients and their families. The charity helps so much within the local community supporting patients and raising awareness.

Rachel sadly lost her dad, Roger Turner to cancer in 2011. He was unable to have treatment, and Rachel knows how different the journeys were with Lingen Davies being involved. Rachel decided in 2024 she wanted to do something to help other families who are going through such difficult times so decided the obvious solution was to run the London marathon!

Lingen Davies has been a big part of Carrie’s family’s lives for just under 20 years with Carrie’s Grandad, Nan, Mum and many other family members and friends being treated at the Centre. She also notes that the wonderful staff support not only the people with Cancer but their families, too, which is absolutely incredible and makes an otherwise daunting and uncertain time, a little easier to bear.

Rachel ran the London Marathon in 2025 and raised a whopping £13,774.25.

When Rachel was fundraising, Carrie offered to put on a Charity Ball to help towards the effort which was a massive success. Since then, they’ve been talking about ways to raise more money for Lingen Davies Cancer

Centre and one day, Rachel semi-seriously suggested that maybe together they could raise £50,000 in Matt’s memory as it would have been his 50th birthday in July. Not one to turn down a challenge for fundraising, Carrie was completely up for it straight away and thus began the crusade!

Our crusade actually coincides with the newly unveiled Sunflower Appeal, which aims to raise £5million to branch out Cancer Care to Telford to enable more treatment for more people.

So far we’ve hosted an Afternoon Tea in the Wynnstay, Oswestry (sellout event), raising almost £2,000 towards our target. We had our special guest, Sophie Jones who was sadly diagnosed with Low-Grade Serious Ovarian Cancer last year. Sophie was treated at the Centre and after finishing her final chemo, she has since received the amazing news of having “no evidence of disease”. The afternoon tea was kindly sponsored by Malcolm Lewis Windows and Derwas of Welshpool. Having these businesses help out, meant that we could add more to our total.

We will be hosting many events over the next year including open air cinema showing at the Wynnstay in Oswestry, a Moonlight Walk, a

psychic night, another afternoon tea and much more!

We would like to say a massive thank you to The Wynnstay who have been hugely supportive of the quest. We are also planning a Summer Ball which will be in July 2026. Rachel will also be undertaking The Great North Run, Everton 10k, London Landmarks Half Marathon and Manchester Marathon, too!

Karen Roberts, Lingen Davies fundraiser, said a huge thank you to Rachel, Carrie and their friends and family for their incredible efforts so far, and dedication to fundraising for the charity. “Rachel and Carrie are fundraising superstars. Rachel has already become our top marathon runner in terms of fundraising success after donating more than £13,000 from her London Marathon challenge.

“I’m delighted to be supporting both with their goal of reaching £50,000 in memory of Rachel’s brother Matthew and Dad Roger, Carrie’s Grandparents who sadly lost their lives to cancer, and all their family and friends who have received treatment at the Centre.”

We are looking for local businesses to help us achieve this target and support any further fundraising events, if this is something you could support, please email us: rc.crusade@gmail.com.

Bracken-rolling at the Old Racecourse

Working horses are an uncommon sight these days, so it’s great to see the tradition being maintained by Barbara Haddrill’s Carnog Working Horses (based at Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant).

Barbara spent five hot and dusty days in early July behind her horse Molly, rolling and flattening the bracken on the Old Racecourse above Oswestry on behalf of Shropshire Council.

Bracken rolling isn’t just quaint and picturesque - it provides a low-impact and relatively cost-effective way of reducing bracken, an invasive species which would otherwise take over the landscape.

Cheaper and lower impact than chemical defoliation, rolling is also more effective than cutting, which actually encourages rapid regrowth. The horse and roller can go places that tractors and quad bikes would struggle to reach, and the action of rolling, which breaks the bracken stems and flattens them back to the ground, is friendly to other wildflowers and plants as well as to small animals.

Bracken-rolling is an efficient and ecologically friendly way of maintaining the environment and keeping it usable

through the summer months for Oswestry walkers and their dogs. It’s also a great example of how even in an era of highly mechanised agriculture and landscape management, horsepower has not yet had its day.

For more information on bracken rolling and working horses, visit Carnog Working Horses at carnog.co.uk.

OF THE MONTH OCTOBER 2025

Night Call (15)

AVAILABLE FROM NOWTV/SKY CINEMA AND ELSEWHERE.

Few films scratch an itch like a quality European thriller, Denmark’s ‘The Guilty’ springs to mind. To this we can add the Belgian film, ‘Night Call’, which, like the others, delivers a lean slice of cinema surely destined for a US remake.

We’re in Brussels and locksmith Mady has just helped a young woman, Claire, get back into her apartment after losing her keys.  While she goes out to get the cash he waits inside, soon she calls him back with a warning, “Get out!”. Perhaps it’s not her apartment after all? The parts of the city we rarely see are beautifully rendered as we follow Mady, fleeing from both sides of the law, relying on his wits to escape from one stand off to the next. Tense and thrilling, it’s simply brilliant. by Michael Hudson

What films tickle your fancy?

By the time you read this, the curtains should have been pulled back, the lights gone down, and the first films at Oswestry’s reopened cinema featured on the big screen. Maona - opening in the former Kinokulture cinema building - has been a labour of love for proprietor and self-confessed movie buff Tatenda Jamera.

The community fund-raiser reached its target of approaching £40,000, then it was full steam ahead to install the new projector (funded by the Oswestry Film Society) and the new sound system. “It’s a big thank you to everyone who has supported us, from those who donated hard-earned cash to those volunteers who gave their time to help upgrade the building,” said Jamera.

Hundreds of people had a close look behind the scenes at Maona’s recent open days. “It was wonderful to experience their enthusiasm and excitement for the new project,” Jamera added.

Daytime and evening screenings will be spread across Thursday to Sunday. Look out for news, updates and film schedules on Maona’s new social media presences, and here in Oswestry Life.

If you  would like to volunteer some time to help, as a steward or working behind the bar, or would like to suggest some films or genres, contact Maona’s manager Holly Maries via email at holly@maonacinema.com.

Pickled Onion Perfection

Did you blink and miss summer? At Covent Garden Fruit & Veg we certainly feel that way - autumn crept up on us fast!

The locally farm-sourced giant marrows and courgettes were fantastic this year, and as soon as the delicious Victoria plums and damsons landed, it sent our jammers into a frenzy.

Now, it’s time for pickling and cocktail onions. If you’re just making the odd jar for yourself, you’re probably looking for small quantities. But for those considering themselves serious picklers, we recommend a 5kg net. You can’t make pickles without vinegar so what’s your preference - spiced malt (available in 2.5ltr and 5ltr) or white distilled vinegar (available in 5ltr)?

For those who want the end result without the tears, Dawn’s been hard at work, filling all the recycled jars that our lovely customers have been saving for us, with her delicious homemade pickled onions. A quick win if you’re in a rush. But don’t miss Dawn’s other delights - pickled beetroot, eggs and red cabbage.

Now October’s here, it’s time for pumpkins and we love receiving deliveries from the same local farm as our marrows and courgettes. They come in all shapes, sizes and varieties. Whether you use them for cooking or carving we guarantee you’ll find one (or two) that’s perfect for your needs.

Dare we say it, Christmas is only two months away! If you’re one of the organised and already planning or need some ideas to get you in the festive mindset, have you considered a hamper? Our ever-popular fruit, veg and mixed hampers are back for another season. They’re great gifts for friends and family, because they show you care, and you can tailor them to special dietary requirements.

Take the stress out of your Christmas fruit and veg shopping, pre-order to collect at a convenient date and time. See you in store!

Drinks with a Twist at 56

After running a feature on 56 earlier on this year, we’ve caught up with Amie and Rod to see what they’ve been up to on Leg Street.

It’s clear to see they are loving their roles behind the bar and last month saw them really put their stamp on the place. The first change you notice is the name on the door, not a name change but following a throwaway comment from Harrison, Amie’s son, they’ve added the tagline of Amie’s WineHouse to the facia which has brought a smile to people’s faces.

Inside, the décor is stylish with a fun twist, the addition of a 1970’s acoustic guitar to the wall with a ‘Take me down and play me’ sign below has certainly become a bit of a talking point! The seating has been changed and with the addition of lower seating, it’s a very comfortable place to enjoy one of the great wines, local beers and fantastic charcuterie boards on offer. There are new items to both the food and cocktail menu and the new ‘Fizzty Six’ prosecco-based drink has been very popular!

As we head into the silly season, bookings are being taken for Christmas events, you can book a table or two, downstairs, upstairs or the whole place. One thing you can guarantee is a good night will be had by all.

With all the changes going on it seemed like a good idea to introduce a website. Take a look at bar56.co.uk, keeping you up to date with the events that have proven very popular over the summer months. There have been Greek, Caribbean, French and American events that have seen everyone dressed up, enjoying a 3 course meal, listening to live music and having a sing and a dance. Such is the popularity of these events, the Mexican night planned for this month was sold out by July!

56 is open Wednesday to Friday from 5pm and Saturday from 1pm, booking is advised and can be done via Facebook, WhatsApp or the website, 07969 903 136.

| Preparation time 25-30 minutes

Cooking time 40-50 minutes plus cooling

IngredIents

• 4 large ripe bananas, peeled

• 50ml Borderfields Gold Cold Pressed Rapeseed Oil

• 100g light brown sugar

• 25g ground almonds

• 1 heaped tsp baking powder

• 2 tsp cinnamon

1. Preheat the oven to 200°C, fan 180°C, gas mark 6. Grease a 900g/2lb non-stick loaf tin and line the base with baking parchment.

2. Put 3 bananas into the bowl of a food processor along with the oil, sugar and tahini, and blitz until smooth.

3. Transfer the mixture into the bowl of a stand mixer. Add the flour, almonds, baking powder, cinnamon, mixed spice, vanilla extract, dates and pecans, and mix until combined.

7. Remove the cake from the oven and leave to cool in the tin for 10 minutes before turning out onto a wire rack to cool completely.

8. Drizzle the icing over the top of the cake, allowing it to drip down the sides, and sprinkle with some sesame seeds.

Unity 4 Performance: Oswestry’s New Gym with Big Fun Energy

Oswestry, it’s time to raise the bar—literally. Unity 4 Performance has landed, and we’re not your average gym. Forget rows of soulless treadmills and half-hearted bicep curls—we’re talking coached sessions, Olympic weightlifting platforms, functional fitness workouts, and a community that sweats, laughs, and wins together.

So, what makes Unity 4 different?

First, the community. We’ve built Unity 4 as a space where everyone—from total beginners to competitive athletes—trains side by side. No cliques. No judgment. Just people coming together to get fitter, stronger, and happier. Our sessions are coach-led, meaning you’ll never be left guessing what to do or worrying if you’re “doing it right.” We guide you through every lift, every workout, and every step forward.

Second, we’re unapologetically passionate about Olympic weightlifting and functional fitness. Whether you’ve never touched a barbell before or you’re chasing your next PB, our team of experienced coaches will help you nail the basics, build confidence, and unleash your potential. And don’t worry—if lifting heavy isn’t your thing, we’ve got plenty of cardio, conditioning, and fun team workouts to keep you moving (and smiling).

And that leads to the third point: fun. Fitness shouldn’t feel like a punishment—it should be the best hour of your day. Our members say it’s the atmosphere that keeps them coming back. Think high-energy music, coaches who actually care, and workouts that challenge you but leave you buzzing.

Viva la Différence!

Imagine walking into a room where you don’t have to explain yourself. Nobody raises an eyebrow if you fidget, pace, or need a quiet moment. Conversations flow gently, pauses are okay, and laughter bubbles up when someone shares a story that feels all too familiar. This is NeuroFriends, a peer support group in Oswestry for neurodivergent adults and young adults, a space where difference is not just accepted but celebrated.

NeuroFriends was created to give neurodivergent people in Oswestry a place to meet, make friends, and take part in things they might not otherwise do. It began when Richard Howell was going through his own diagnostic journey and realised there wasn’t space locally where people could feel accepted and heard. So NeuroFriends was born.

“When I first started the group, I was nervous nobody would come. I remember sitting in the room before our very first session, wondering if people would walk through the door. When they did, I realised just how much this space was needed, not just for me, but for so many others who had also been searching for a place where they could belong.

“A typical NeuroFriends session is calm, welcoming, and full of variety. Some people enjoy crafting, others chat, and a few dive into a game of Warhammer. We have even launched a subgroup called NeuroHammer, designed specifically for neurodivergent Warhammer players. Both groups meet at the same time and place, so you can choose what feels right for you.”

During a session you can also visit the tuck shop, which offers tea, coffee, soft drinks and snacks (for a small donation). NeuroFriends is a space to simply be yourself. There is no set agenda. Some people bring knitting, others sketch or paint, and sometimes we have board games in one corner while quieter conversations happen in another. The mix changes every month, but

A typical NeuroFriends session is calm, welcoming, and full of variety. Some people enjoy crafting, others chat, and a few dive into a game of Warhammer. We have even launched a subgroup called NeuroHammer, designed specifically for neurodivergent Warhammer players.

the constant is that you are never judged for how you join in. Whether you are full of energy or just want to sit with a cuppa, it is all welcome.

As one member put it, “Walking into somewhere new is always scary, but I was met at the door with a warm welcome. There were plenty of things to do, or space to sit quietly with no pressure. Plus, tea and biscuits for a small donation—perfect!”

If things get too much, you can retreat to the newly added quiet space. With soft blankets, soothing sounds, bubble lamps and a projector that casts beautiful patterns across the ceiling, it is designed to help in those moments of overstimulation.

The group has grown from strength to strength in a short time. A small team of volunteers now supports Richard in running NeuroFriends, which helps take some of the pressure off. Attendance has increased month on month, with regular faces returning for every session. Real connections and friendships are being built in a safe, inclusive space.

NeuroFriends meets at the Senior Citizens Club in Oswestry on the third Sunday of every month. For more information you can email the admin team at facilitators@neurofriends.net, check out the website neurofriends.net, or visit the Facebook page: facebook. com/neurofriendsgroup

Whether you come for a chat, to play a game, or just to sit quietly with others who understand, you will always find a warm welcome at NeuroFriends. The door is open, the kettle is on, and there’s always a seat for you.

Unlocking the Health Benefits of Sauna & Red Light Therapy

At Coach House Fitness we pride ourselves on being more than just a gym and are always looking for new ways to support health and overall wellbeing. Our latest step is the introduction of two new recovery therapies — a traditional sauna and fullbody red light panels.

Sauna in its various forms has been used for thousands of years across many cultures for health, hygiene and social purposes. Many of us enjoying a ‘spa day’ will opt for a sit in a sauna for relaxation. However, experts believe regular sauna bathing may offer benefits for arthritis, chronic fatigue, cold symptoms, muscle soreness, psoriasis and stress. Sauna exposure may also be good for the heart. As skin temperature rises the body attempts to keep cool by increasing the heart rate, causing blood vessels to open thus boosting circulation. Research suggests sauna use for 15 minutes after a workout, three times a week, may have a more positive effect on blood pressure than exercise alone.

Red light therapy, in contrast, does not produce heat but works by enhancing cellular function and regeneration. Differing from traditional infrared therapy, it uses specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared (NIR) light to stimulate mitochondrial activity in cells. Reported benefits of regular use of red light therapy include improved skin tone and texture, reduced inflammation and accelerated muscle recovery. By penetrating deep into tissues it promotes collagen production, enhances circulation and supports overall energy levels. Widely used by athletes, red light therapy is gaining popularity as an accessible and effective addition to everyday health routines, with benefits reported from 10–20 minutes’ use, two or three times a week.

Opening this autumn, our new Recovery Room will make these therapies accessible to both members and non-member visitors. If you have any questions about the therapies and their potential benefits for you, or about gym membership, please contact us at info@coachhousefitness.net or visit www.coachhousefitness.net.

Bespoke Home Support for Peace of Mind

Before some of us have even opened our eyes in the morning, carers from Approved Care & Support are often already on the road. Their destination? Homes across Oswestry and Shropshire with someone waiting for help in staying independent and safe. For this local business, care is never generic. It’s deeply personal and tailored. And now they’re calling on people of all ages to join their team, and reaching out to those in need of private home support who want excellence delivered with compassion.

Approved Care & Support has built its reputation on core values: compassion, respect, integrity and excellence. Clients are visited in their own home, and a plan is built around their specific needs including routines, medication, personal care, companionship and daily tasks. The goal is to help people stay independent and to feel like they matter.

Why You Should Consider Working Here

One of the most exciting things about Approved Care & Support is its commitment to recruiting a diverse workforce. Working here means more than a job and for many, it’s a calling. The firm provides training, support, and safe working practices. Moreover, the roles offer flexibility. Whether someone wants to work mornings, evenings or weekends, you get to be part of a small, dedicated team. The aim is to fit the needs of both clients and staff.

There are few careers more rewarding with each day presenting new challenges. You will meet people whose stories are different every day and see the direct impact of your work.

Private Care That Makes a Difference

For our clients; older people, individuals with disabilities or those recovering from illness, Approved Care & Support offers bespoke services, tailored schedules, and respectful care delivered at home.

Clients receive a weekly schedule, so they know who’s coming and when, along with a care plan they can read and understand. Focus is on doing things with dignity and comfort and making small things matter for our clients. Because it’s often the little acts like helping with personal care, medication reminders, daily routines and companionship, that impacts someone’s quality of life.

Our clients say…

“I am so glad we had Approved Care and Support to care for Mum. They were all brilliant and always ready to go the extra mile.”

“Mum certainly loved her carers, and they were so sweet when she wanted to share poems and so on with them. They were like friends to her and gave her the attention she needed.”

“My most grateful thanks for all the care & attention I have received over the last three years. Everyone has been so pleasant and caring. Nothing has ever been too much trouble.”

If you or someone you love could benefit from home support that honours their wishes, and treats them as a person, contact Approved Care & Support for a confidential chat.

Health with Dr Paul Middleton

“Your hands tell the story of your life” Anon

“Why do doctors look at my hands?”, a friend asked me recently. He actually asked if it was to see if he bit his nails! But, just like our title today, your diagnosis may be shown in your hands. Let’s start with the nails alone – are they spoon-shaped? (koilonychia) which might mean anaemia, are they “clubbed”? (meaning you have lost the normal angle of the nailbed to the finger)and all medical students can reel a list of causes for this that range from heart and lung diseases through to thyroid disease amongst other diagnoses, they might be pitted or have thickened nails which might have split (onycholysis) which indicates psoriasis. They might have little splinter haemorrhages with endocarditis or you may simply have caught your finger and got a very painful subungual haematoma – a nail bruise! Your hand joints can show changes indicative of different types of arthritis, bruises in unusual places may indicate blood disease. Do you know your life line on your

palm? I’ve seen fatty deposits here indicating a very high cholesterol. Gout can produce joint changes and even present as a red, hot, painful hand joint.

Your hand has 34 different muscles and sometimes, if the nerve to them is compromised they can waste a bit. Persistent twitching, usually due to stress, caffeine or fatigue can have more serious implications. We can develop a whole host of tremors as humans and these can indicate a range of problems too – from anxiety to thyroid disease, liver disease to Parkinsonism.

Do you have “Viking finger”? It’s more commonly known as Dupuytren’s contracture and is a thickening of the palm. It can be associated with your genes or sometimes heart disease, epilepsy or diabetes.

I’d like to finish on a more positive note. All medical examination is a form of assault really - assault with permission hopefully. What better way to start than holding hands?

“My most grateful thanks for all the care and attention I have received over the last 3 years. Everyone has been so pleasant and caring. Nothing has ever been too much trouble.”

Get the support you need to stay at home right now - If you’re not eligible for care from your local authority or the NHS, don’t worry; whether you need 24 hour support or just 30 minutes a day, we’re here for you. And the best part?

Our prices are up to 20% less than other home-care providers, o ering top-notch care with experienced and caring workers.

“People

I love this time of year. I can’t walk past a ripe blackberry bush or apple tree without picking a few to enjoy. The other morning, I walked past a tall blackberry bush brimming with juicy, ripe berries - all out of my reach. Instantly, the scarcity story crept in - just a whisper inside my mind: “All the good ones are gone. I’ve missed out.”

Without even looking, I decided that this was the only bush available and stood, for quite a while, trying to plot a way to reach those top berries. It wasn’t happening. Disappointed and feeling denied, I accepted defeat and walked on. Just around the corner, though, there was another bush - overflowing with berries at exactly the right height!

That moment made me pause. How often do we tell ourselves limiting stories like this? Stories that quietly shape the way we see the world, our opportunities, and even our sense of self?

Scarcity (fear of not enough) isn’t the only story that sucks our belief in what’s possible for us. How many of these narratives sound familiar to you:

“People like us don’t ____.”

“We’ll never be able to ____.”

“Some people have all the luck.”

“That’s not for people like us.”

While uplifting beliefs can help us to thrive, beliefs that are rooted in fear or limitation can hold us back. The key is noticing and reframing them. Pay attention to the words you use, even casually (in your mind and out loud)phrases like “typical” when you

miss a green light can reinforce a mindset of scarcity, unworthiness or limitation.

We all have dreams. If you want to pursue them and change your life, start with your beliefs. And if you want to change your beliefs, begin by rewriting your narrative.

Help with Outstanding Tax Bills

If you’re struggling to pay a tax bill, HMRC’s Time to Pay scheme may provide breathing space by allowing you to spread payments over time and avoid immediate enforcement.

Self-Assessment

You may be able to set up a plan online if you’ve submitted your latest return, owe £30,000 or less, are within 60 days of the deadline, and have no other debts or arrangements with HMRC.

Employers’ PAYE

An online plan may be available if you’ve missed a payment deadline, owe up to £100,000, can repay within 12 months, and have no other HMRC debts. All required PAYE and Construction Industry Scheme (CIS) submissions must be up to date.

VAT

Payment plans can be arranged online if you owe £100,000 or less, intend to repay within 12 months, have filed all VAT returns, and the debt relates to a period starting in 2023 or later. However, businesses using the Cash Accounting Scheme,

Annual Accounting Scheme, or making payments on account are not eligible online.

Simple Assessments

You may qualify for an online plan if you owe between £32 and £50,000, can clear it within 36 months, and have no other HMRC debts.

When Online Isn’t an Option

If you don’t meet the online criteria, you’ll need to call HMRC directly. They will ask about your income, expenses, tax liabilities, savings, and assets – and may expect you to use available resources toward your bill.

HMRC may agree to give extra time if they believe you cannot pay in full immediately but will be able to in the future. If they decide more time won’t help, they can demand payment in full and begin enforcement action

Taking early steps is essential. If you’re worried about managing a tax bill, seeking professional advice can help you secure the most suitable arrangement and avoid unnecessary stress.

Oswestry Careers Day

The New Saints FC Foundation is proud to announce Oswestry Careers Day; a new initiative aimed at connecting young people with local businesses and challenging the notion that they must leave their hometown to find a fulfilling career. The free event, supported by a growing list of local organisations and businesses, will take place on Friday, 3 October, from 4pm to 6.30pm at The Centre Spot, Oak Street, Oswestry, SY11 1LW.

The Oswestry Careers Day provides a unique platform for young people to meet with businesses, organisations and professionals. Attendees can explore a wide range of career paths and discover diverse job opportunities available here in Oswestry. The event is designed to

inspire the next generation by offering a firsthand look at the vibrant local job market.

In addition to networking with employers, the event will feature dedicated sessions to help young people prepare for their future. Experts will be on hand to offer one-on-one advice on how to create winning CVs and master interview techniques. Attendees can learn about apprenticeships, further education, and the benefits of volunteering to build valuable experience. The event is completely free to attend, including complimentary refreshments.

Gill Jones, Foundation Manager stated, “We work closely with many young people and services through our youth clubs, school services, holiday activities and fun football sessions and keep hearing the same. Young people want to know more about employment opportunities in the area.

The Oswestry Careers Day is a direct response to a community need, providing a tangible way to link local talent with local employers. It’s an opportunity for young people to see the possibilities open to them right in their own community and take their first step towards a successful career.

A number of key local businesses and organisations have already committed to attending, including Martin & Jones Marketing, Ridgeway Construction, Milanos, Approved Care & Support and SiFi. The event will also feature educational and employment specialists like North Shropshire College, Enable and SBC Training.

Redefining the way into a career in law

A Shropshire law firm is helping to redefine the traditional route into the legal profession, with new apprenticeships providing opportunities for people from all walks of life.

Lanyon Bowdler, which has offices in Oswestry and across Shropshire, as well as in North Wales and Herefordshire, offers a range of apprenticeships and training programmes.

Emma Harrison, learning and development manager, says apprenticeships are a fantastic way to begin a career in law.

She says, “I am a great advocate for apprenticeships because university doesn’t suit everyone, and an apprenticeship provides a way into a profession without having to go to university.

“People aren’t always academic, but they may have the aptitude, and it gives them the chance to practice, whereas they wouldn’t have had that opportunity even five years ago.”

Cameron Petch is currently undertaking the Solicitors Qualification Examination (SQE) Apprenticeship, which is a great way of qualifying as a solicitor without the significant cost of going to university.

He says, “Essentially, you are studying for the SQE within the apprenticeship, so it’s a combination of academic study and training whilst actually doing the job at a law firm.

“It’s been a big step up from my previous qualification, as it’s a Level 7 apprenticeship which is the equivalent of a Masters, but it’s been really good. The beauty of it being an apprenticeship is that it’s modular, so it’s just a case of taking it step by step.

“The sheer variety of law we go into has been eyeopening for me. I elected not to go to university and now all of a sudden, here I am learning about contract law, business law, wills, trusts, criminal law… it has really made me feel like a ‘proper’ law student and I am loving it!

“I have spoken to a lot of people who are convinced that because they have not done law at university that a legal career is shut off to them, but that’s simply not the case.

“It’s become so much more accessible and open for people. You don’t need to do a law degree at university anymore; there are a lot of different routes into the legal profession now.”

For more information, visit the Lanyon Bowdler website at www.lblaw.co.uk

October in the garden

As we prepare for winter, we should still have reasonable days out in the garden. The nights are drawing in, so evening work is becoming less possible, and for most people it will be weekend work. Time to admire the winter colours of ornamental trees including acers.

If you have vegetable plot, then there will be root vegetables to harvest. On good well drained soil you can leave some in all winter, but you do risk cold damage and rot, especially in wet areas. You can also think about the spring by sowing some of the cool temperature crops – brassicas, peas and broad beans. You may need to protect the young plants from any snow fall though. If you have a greenhouse, you may still have some salad crops to pick, but now is also the time to give it a good clean out, wash down and disinfect.

Protection from frost applies across the whole garden too. If not already done, get those potted delicate plants indoors and be ready with some fleece to protect others from frost. It is also time to get ahead with planting spring bulbs for some early colour next year. There are plenty on sale in the supermarkets and garden centres. Postage costs soon add up if you buy on-line. However, I

am writing my seed purchase shopping list, and of course their postage costs are less.

The biggest job this month is a general tidy up. Weeding continues, but now it is joined by clearing all the dead vegetation. Allowing air to circulate prevents disease and means garden pests have fewer places to over-winter.

Thinking ahead to winter weather, make sure tall plants and climbers are secured to protect them from strong winds and heavy snowfall. It is much easier now and nicer to do it now rather than in the middle of a snowstorm. It is a great time to cut back overgrown shrubs as the risk of disturbing nesting birds is over. IS IT TIME TO GET FINANCIAL ADVICE?

Have you ever wondered if you’re missing out on ways to save money or grow your nest egg? Maybe you aren’t sure when to access your pension? Or perhaps you think you could be paying less tax?

If so you’re not alone.

They’re questions many of us ask ourselves, but just 8% of people in the UK seek advice according to a survey from the Financial Conduct Authority. This is despite research from the International Longevity Centre showing that those who do get advice have, on average, nearly £48,000 more in pensions and other financial assets.

Here, Craig Roberts, director of Belgrave Wincham Independent Financial Planners, shares four ways that an independent financial adviser could help make your money go further.

Tailored advice to grow your savings One of the biggest benefits of working with an independent financial adviser (IFA) is that you’ll receive personalised advice tailored to your situation. They’ll help you set clear targets, choose the right savings tools, and create a long-term plan to grow your savings with confidence.

Maximise your tax allowances Tax is one of life’s certainties, but overpaying doesn’t have to be. From ISAs and pensions to trusts and other tax-efficient investments, a good financial adviser can help make sure you’re not paying more than necessary.

Review and improve your investments It’s easy to overlook older investments that might carry higher fees or deliver lower returns. An experienced IFA can review your pensions and investments to ensure you’re getting the best value and not missing out on new opportunities.

Plan pension withdrawals wisely Careful planning can also help maximise your income when it’s time to access your pension. An independent financial adviser is able to guide you through your options, help reduce your tax liabilities, and support you in planning a comfortable, happy retirement.

Why not take the first step and get in touch to see what independent advice could do for you? You can call Belgrave Wincham on 01691 886554 or email mail@belgravewincham.co.uk.

Q&A

What happens to the graves when a church is sold off?

Q: The village Methodist church where my grandparents purchased a double plot and are buried is to be sold at public auction. Sale details state the purchaser will be required to take on the adjacent Burial Ground on a 999-year lease and they must fence it off. They will be responsible for the upkeep of the burial Ground and the Methodist Church ‘will retain a right of access for burial purposes and the visiting of graves’. I regularly visit my grandparents’ grave and hoped when my time came I could be laid to rest there with them. Now I am worried about future access to the plot and ongoing maintenance of the churchyard. Can you provide any clarity?

A: Methodist burial grounds are generally not consecrated unless the Managing Trustees specifically choose to consecrate them, so the legislation that applies to Anglican cemeteries does not necessarily apply to Methodist burial grounds.

Where the sale of a Methodist burial ground forms part of the sale of other land and buildings, however, the burial ground itself must be sold by way of grant of a long-term lease to the buyer (tenant). This helps to ensure that the Methodist Church can enforce the covenants placed on the former burial ground and the history of the land as a burial ground retains recognition.

Until the disposal takes place, responsibility for the burial ground will lie in the hands of whoever has undertaken managing trusteeship. This is usually the local Church Council but could be the Circuit Meeting or another Church Council if managing trusteeship was delegated when the church ceased to worship. The burial ground’s governing document (like a trust deed or constitution) should explicitly state who the managing trustees are.

The above suggests that access and maintenance should not be an issue, but you may want to request sight of any Special Conditions Sale from the auctioneers and, if necessary, seek further legal advice then.
