Oswestry’s Remembrance Day commemorations

Oswestry’s annual Remembrance Day Parade and Service will assemble on Bailey Head at 10.30am on Sunday 8 November. Porthywaen Silver Band will lead the procession to the Memorial Gates at Cae Glas Park where a Remembrance Service will be held. The service will be followed by the twominute silence and reveille before wreaths are laid. The Parade will then return to the Bailey Head before being dismissed by the Parade Marshal. All are welcome. A commemoration service will be held at St Oswald’s Church later that day at 4pm. For the Remembrance Day Parade and Service to take place safely, there will be temporary road closures in place on Church Street, Smithfield Street, The Cross, Bailey Street and Bailey Head on Sunday 8 November from 10am to approximately 12pm. Another service will be held at the Memorial Gates on Armistice Day, Wednesday 11 November at 11am. For the Armistice Day Service, there will be temporary road closures in place on Church Street and Smithfield Street on Wednesday 11 November from 10.30am to approximately 12.30pm.

Renaissance Christmas Concert Music lovers are invited to enjoy an afternoon of festive Renaissance music when The Scholars & Gentlemen perform at St Oswald’s Church in Oswestry on Saturday 28th November 2026 at 3.30pm. Directed by Mike Donkin, the group will present In dulci jubilo, a special programme of Renaissance Christmas music, offering audiences a wonderful opportunity to experience the sounds of the festive season in the beautiful surroundings of St Oswald’s Church. The concert will raise funds in support of the Whittington Music Festival, helping the registered charity continue its work celebrating live music. Tickets cost £15 per person, payable on the door, with refreshments included. The concert takes place at St Oswald’s Church, Oswestry, SY11 2SY. For further information, visit www.whittingtonmusicfestival.org.uk.

Every Tuesday morning, Place of Welcome opens its doors at the Parish Centre of St Oswald’s Church in Oswestry to offer local people somewhere to enjoy company and conversation. People of all ages are welcome at the informal chat café, which is run by volunteers from the church. Those who drop in join together in conversations around the tables, often discovering shared interests and forming new friendships. Although it can be daunting to walk into an unfamiliar place for the first time, volunteers and ‘regulars’ will always make sure newcomers are greeted and made to feel welcome. Coffee, tea or hot chocolate, with biscuits, small cakes or toast, are offered free of charge. There is also a very popular free book swap table. The drop-in is affiliated with the Places of Welcome network, whose aim is to help build relationships and combat isolation within local communities. It’s also registered with the Warm Welcome Spaces network offer a place for people to go if they are struggling to keep warm at home. Place of Welcome at St Oswald’s is open on Tuesdays between 10:30am and 12:30pm in the Parish Centre (church hall), which is off the Broadwalk between Church Street and Welsh Walls. When open, it is clearly signposted with banners and an A-board at the entrance. The building has wheelchair access, a disabled toilet and baby change facilities. Oswestry life

An Oswestry hero - nearly lost to history An Oswestry man, Arthur Bowles, served his country in two wars and throughout the Empire is all but forgotten for his name does not appear on any war memorial, but it’s now hoped his name will take its place of honour on the Park Gates War Memorial in Oswestry. Oswestry amateur historian, Chris Bryan-Smith came upon Arthur through the Oswestry History Group’s research on the Boer War and explained, “It just struck a chord with me, it just seemed so sad that Arthur thought he had no one in the world so would be totally forgotten – and he so nearly was! Arthur was born to an extremely dysfunctional family on 29 June 1876 in Llandetty, Breconshire but his father was soon convicted again for poaching, so Arthur and his siblings, Edward and Clara were dropped at the Oswestry Union Workhouse in Morda in 1878 when Arthur was just two. Their first recollection was of being in the Oswestry area, so they always assumed they had been born nearby.” Records are scarce as to what their childhood was like, but male and female were generally

segregated so he may have seen his older brother but would have very seldom seen his sister and when his brother was taken out of the workhouse and died, it left Arthur isolated. “Arthur joined the 1st Battalion, Royal Welsh Fusiliers in Wrexham when he was 18 years old on 15 June 1894,” continued Chris, “and served all over the Empire in such far-flung places as India, Malta, Crete, Egypt and ended up in the Boer War in South Africa where he was slightly wounded at a battle known as the Passage of the Tugela River. He then left the army until the outbreak of WW1 August 1914 when, he again, volunteered. The Fusiliers were sent to France as the German army ripped through Belgium and into France – this is before the trenches that we all associate with WW1 were even dug – and they were thrown in to try and halt the tide of Germanic zeal and were, but for a very few, wiped out.” It’s recorded that Arthur Bowles died in France on 19 December 1914 - of wounds - and was buried at Sailly-sur-la-Lys. It is believed he was wounded in the Well Farm attack (Rouge Bancs), just south of the infamous town of Ypres, the day before. “It’s interesting to note that when he signed up in 1894, he gave his next of kin as his sister Clara, who married a Joseph Jones and had several children – one named Arthur – but when he signed up again in

1914, he leaves everything to a colleague in the Fusiliers, Thomas Borthwick. In correspondence, Private Borthwick reports that Arthur had told him, ‘He did not have a single relation in the world’. We know that his sister died in 1915 so would have been alive at the time of his death, but we know nothing of the family dynamic. It’s just so sad that he thought himself so alone – he deserves to be remembered for his service and sacrifice for his country in the town he called home – Oswestry.” At the end of the war in 1918 there was no single national mandate or legal decree stipulating the nature of war memorials, instead, it was a massive grassroots movement, driven by grieving local communities immediately following the November 1918 Armistice. As no one knew Arthur, and the fact he had been killed so early on in that great conflagration, no one put his name on any list. It’s likely that there are living descendants of his sister Clara still in the area and Chris would love to hear from them on c.bryansmith@ btopenworld.com Images: Top: 1st Battalion Royal Welsh Fusiliers marching off to France in 1914 – there is a certain innocence to the picture (RWF museum); WW1 Royal Welsh Fusiliers cap badge (Chris Bryan-Smith) Left: Royal Welsh Fusiliers – in France in 1914 (RWF museum)

Voting is now open, and you have until mid-January 2027 to have your say, with winners being revealed in our March 2027 issue. Find Your Voice with The People’s Show Choir If you love singing in the car, find yourself humming along to the radio or simply fancy meeting new people, The People’s Show Choir in Oswestry could be just what you need to brighten up your Friday evenings. You don’t need to read music, have singing experience or even believe you can hold a tune. At The People’s Show Choir, everyone is welcome, and the emphasis is firmly on enjoying yourself, making friends and discovering the pleasure of singing together. Part of a national charitable organisation, The People’s Show Choir brings communities together through music. Its members come from all walks of life, including carers, NHS workers, parents, professionals and retirees. Some have sung for years, while others are discovering their voices for the very first time. The Oswestry choir is led by local secondary school music teacher Amy McCulloch, whose passion for making music accessible to everyone has helped create a friendly, supportive group where people can relax, build confidence and enjoy being part of something special. For Amy, singing is about much more than hitting the right notes. It’s an opportunity for people to connect, make lasting friendships and enjoy some welldeserved time for themselves. And it seems Oswestry residents have embraced the idea wholeheartedly. The choir has become so popular that it recently needed a larger rehearsal venue to

The Oswestry choir

accommodate growing demand. Recognising the value of the project to the local community, Holy Trinity C of E Primary Academy and Nursery was only too happy to offer its school hall as a new home for the choir. Rehearsals now take place every Friday during term time, from 7.30pm until 9pm, at the school on Middleton Road. Doors open at 7pm, allowing members to enjoy a cup of tea, catch up with friends and meet newcomers before the singing begins. It’s this relaxed, sociable atmosphere that makes The People’s Show Choir particularly appealing to anyone who might feel nervous about joining a traditional choir. There are no auditions, no expectations of previous musical experience and certainly no pressure to perform in front of an audience. Whether you’re 18 or 80, the only thing you need to bring is a willingness to give singing a go. After all, if you have a voice, you can sing! Of course, for those who dream of performing, there are plenty of exciting opportunities. Members can take part in local concerts showcasing the songs they’ve learned throughout the term, as well as larger events featuring choirs from across the country accompanied by The People’s Orchestra. There are also opportunities to

attend rehearsals at other locations, access digital resources, courses and workshops, and even participate in tours and international musical experiences. However, performing is entirely optional. Members are encouraged to progress at their own pace, with enjoyment and confidence always taking priority. For many, the weekly rehearsal becomes something to look forward to. It’s a chance to switch off from everyday responsibilities, share a laugh, learn something new and spend time with people who enjoy music just as much as they do. And with so many people looking for opportunities to make new connections locally, joining the choir could be the perfect way to expand your social circle while doing something you genuinely enjoy. Paws for thought

Do you have the right work-pet balance? Looking after a pet when you have a job can be a tricky juggling act. While some animals are very low maintenance, such as cats, rabbits and small rodents like hamsters, dogs in particular need exercise, stimulation and toilet breaks. Leaving them alone for eight hours while you go to work isn’t realistic. Dogs can become distressed, bark or howl, or be destructive if they stay home alone for too long.

What’s the limit?

You should only leave a puppy for a couple of hours, whereas the Dogs Trust recommends a maximum of four hours for an adult dog. You might need to come home sooner for an older animal.

What’s the best solution?

If you can’t work from home, coming back during your lunch break can reassure your dog and allow you to let them out or take them for a quick walk. You can ask friends, neighbours or family to do the same. Otherwise, consider doggy day care, a pet sitter or a dog walker. Find one on www.narpsuk.co.uk.

How can you reduce separation anxiety?

It’s best to get your dog used to being left on their own. With a puppy, start by moving a short distance away, then progress to leaving the room. Each time they remain calm, give them a treat. Then you can try leaving the house, just for a few minutes initially. Gradually increase the time you’re away. Once they’re happy on their own for an hour, they should be fine for longer. Always reward them when you come back.

What will make your dog’s day easier?

Leave toys to stimulate them, including ones they can chew and puzzle toys that dispense treats. Create a cosy sleeping area. Make sure they are walked, fed and have been to the toilet before you go out.

Accommodation destination near Oswestry £7.5m investment in holiday, corporate and wedding accommodation at historic Tedsmore Hall estate A £7.5 million investment in the historic Tedsmore Hall estate near Oswestry by the Robert Parker Collection Group has transformed former stable buildings and added new mews-style cottages, creating a high-quality accommodation destination on the Shropshire-Mid Wales border. The development includes the extensive conversion of former stable blocks, the construction of new mews-style cottages, investment in solar energy and ground-source heat pump technology, and major improvements to the estate’s landscaped grounds. The expanded accommodation is designed to meet growing demand from wedding guests, families, leisure visitors and business travellers staying in the area. Located near West Felton, Oswestry, Tedsmore is well placed for people visiting Oswestry, Shrewsbury, Wrexham, Chester, North and Mid Wales and the wider Welsh Borders for business or leisure. The cottages combine spacious living areas, fully equipped kitchens, stylish bedrooms and modern facilities, giving guests the flexibility to stay together while retaining their own space and privacy. For wedding guests, the accommodation provides an alternative to families and groups being split between separate hotels, guest houses and holiday properties. Groups can stay for a single night or extend their visit before and after the wedding, turning a one-day celebration into a relaxed multi-day gathering. The development also gives businesses an alternative to placing visiting directors, clients, contractors and employees in individual hotel rooms. It is particularly well suited to longer project stays, employee relocations and residential company gatherings, including leadership sessions, strategy meetings, away days and team-building visits.

| Oswestry life

Robert Parker, Chairman of the Robert Parker Collection Group, said: “This £7.5 million investment in the Tedsmore Hall estate has allowed us to bring historic buildings back into high-quality use while creating additional accommodation that meets a wide range of needs. “We welcome families and friends attending weddings, people visiting the region for leisure and employees working locally for anything from a few nights to several weeks. “Tedsmore Cottages allows groups to stay together, cook, eat and socialise in a way that is difficult when everyone is spread between separate hotel rooms. “At the same time, each cottage provides the comfort, personal space and privacy expected by today’s guests. “Tedsmore’s location makes it particularly convenient for people visiting businesses, attending weddings or exploring attractions across Shropshire, Wrexham, North and Mid Wales and the wider Welsh Borders, as well as those travelling along the Telford and Chester corridors.” Guests have access to extensive landscaped grounds, ample parking, Wi-Fi, recreational facilities and a private estate walking trail. The latest phase of the development provides 14 cottages with a total of 54 bedrooms, giving the estate capacity to accommodate up to 105 guests. Much of the stable-block refurbishment and new-build work was undertaken by local companies, supporting businesses and skilled trades across the surrounding area. Mr Parker added: “The investment is not simply about creating more accommodation. It is about protecting the character of the estate, supporting the local economy and encouraging more visitors to stay and spend time in this beautiful part of the world.” Further information about Tedsmore Cottages and the accommodation and facilities available can be found at www.tedsmorecottages.co.uk.

Mental Health

The Stories That Remind Us We’re Not Alone Behind every person we pass in the street, work alongside or see smiling on social media, there can be a story we’re not even aware of. For Sam, 39, that understanding comes from personal experience. For more than 20 years, he has lived with his own mental health battles – periods he describes as his “dark clouds” – including three occasions when his thoughts became so overwhelming that he didn’t want to be alive. Those experiences have now become the driving force behind ‘Don’t Hide’, an online mental health story-sharing platform built around a simple idea: real people telling their real stories, in their own voices. “I started Don’t Hide because I don’t want someone else to go through what I did,” explains Sam. “Having feelings so strong in my head that I didn’t want to be alive was horrible. Nobody should have to endure that, but sadly, they do.” Open to men and women over the age of 18, Don’t Hide gives people somewhere to talk openly about their experiences, while allowing others to read stories that may feel remarkably similar to their own. That sense of not being alone can matter. Social media is embedded in daily life now, and it mostly shows other people’s perfect lives. Holidays, relationships, careers and family milestones constantly on our phones, but it’s the most honest posts we don’t see. As Sam points out, admitting “I’m struggling” can feel particularly daunting when it appears alongside somebody else’s seemingly perfect life. The result is people suffering in silence, overwhelmed and unable to share they’re in need. Don’t Hide offers an alternative…somewhere without the expectation that life should always look polished. The website now hosts more than 81 personal stories, alongside articles exploring mental health, and has accumulated more than 200,000 Facebook page views. Every person who contributes is also given their own permanent Don’t Hide story number. It’s a small detail with considerable meaning for Sam. That number belongs to their story and will never be reassigned or changed, giving each contributor their own place within the project’s history. Sometimes people contact Sam without intending to submit anything at all. They simply need to tell somebody what they are experiencing. Putting grief, trauma, sadness or low mood into words can, Sam believes, provide a way of “unloading” thoughts that have been circling in someone’s mind. Others get in

touch simply to support the project and encourage him to continue. The platform is growing in other ways too. Volunteer writers are beginning to contribute their own mental health articles, giving them a dedicated place to explore subjects that matter to them. New partnerships are also being developed with businesses around Shrewsbury and Shropshire, with plans to expand further afield and eventually collaborate with charities. Sam hopes Don’t Hide could ultimately become a place where charities and organisations can direct people who want to share their experiences and where those stories can reach someone who needs to hear them. It isn’t intended to replace professional mental health services. Instead, it offers something different: community. A reminder that whatever somebody may be experiencing, there is every chance another person has been in a similar situation. Mental health services continue to face enormous pressure, making communities, charities, support groups and projects such as Don’t Hide an increasingly visible part of the wider conversation around mental health. Perhaps the most powerful part of the project, however, remains its simplest: One person tells the truth about what happened to them. Someone else reads it, recognises themselves and feels seen. And, for a moment, they know they aren’t the only one. Stories can be submitted through the Don’t Hide website donthide.co.uk/ share where readers can also explore existing stories, articles, resources and information about the project. Minutes with the MP By Helen Morgan – MP for North Shropshire It hardly seems possible that we’re already approaching the end of another year. Autumn got off to such a warm and sunny start that it felt like summer lingered a little longer than usual. The extra warmth was a welcome bonus for many of us, but for farmers across North Shropshire, the increasing unpredictability is less welcome. The changing weather patterns we are seeing, whether prolonged periods of heat, heavy downpours, or sudden shifts between the two, create huge uncertainty for farming businesses. Crops can struggle in extreme heat, which can damage fields and reduce yields, while intense rainfall can delay or even ruin a harvest completely. Farming has always carried on at the mercy of the weather, but farmers tell me that planning ahead is becoming more difficult than ever. These challenges are compounded by many other pressures currently facing the industry. Farmers are working hard to produce food, care for the countryside and protect the environment at the same time. Yet too

often they are met with unnecessary obstacles rather than support. The confusion surrounding the Government’s handling of the Sustainable Farming Incentive scheme is a recent example. Many farmers who were trying to take positive steps for the environment, while keeping their businesses viable, found themselves dealing with a frustrating application processes unfit for purpose. It contributed to a feeling that farmers are screaming into the void, all too often an afterthought in Westminster. It’s particularly disappointing because farming across the area supports jobs, underpins local businesses and helps maintain our wonderful landscape. Most importantly, it puts food on our tables. As your MP, I will continue to press the Government to treat farming as the strategic national asset that it is. Farmers deserve policies and processes that provide certainty, fairness and long-term support. Farming forms the backbone of the North Shropshire economy, and I will continue to stand up for the people and businesses that keep it strong.

College students celebrate 100% pass rate and first-choice university places Students studying Sport in conjunction with The New Saints (TNS) at North Shropshire College are celebrating an outstanding set of 2026 results, with both programmes achieving a 100% pass rate. But it’s not just their results that are worth celebrating. Every student who applied to university secured a place on their first-choice course, highlighting the wide range of opportunities available to students who choose to study at college. Students have secured places on a variety of higher education courses, including Physiotherapy, PE Teaching, Biomedical Science, Sport and Exercise Therapy, and Nutrition and Exercise. Their next steps demonstrate the breadth of careers that can follow a Level 3 qualification, from working with athletes and supporting rehabilitation to teaching, health, fitness and nutrition. The results also help to challenge a common misconception that choosing college means you cannot progress to university. In fact, studying a Level 3 course at college can provide an excellent pathway into higher education, while giving students the opportunity to develop practical skills, build their confidence and prepare for their chosen career. For students interested in Sport, there are opportunities to develop knowledge across areas such as fitness, performance, health and wellbeing. The New Saints (TNS) programme also provides a strong foundation for students looking to progress into a range of science and health-related careers. For the students celebrating this year, securing their first-choice university course marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter. Their achievements demonstrate what can be possible when students have the right support, opportunities and ambition. With a 100% pass rate across Sport and TNS and every university applicant securing their firstchoice course, the 2026 results are a fantastic achievement for both students and staff.

Thinking about your next step? If you’re considering your options after school and want to find out where a college course could take you, explore the courses available at North Shropshire College and discover the progression opportunities on offer. CINEMA NEWS

HAPPY FIRST BIRTHDAY!

prescient is the way social media has become obsessed with missing people, with online communities dissecting every scrap of information. Searching predicted this remarkably early. It’s a clever idea, but thankfully more than a gimmick. Every email, video and Facebook post seems to reveal another clue, and when you think you’ve cracked it, along comes another twist. Tense, emotional and clever, it’ll keep you guessing till the end.

It’s 12 months since the Maona community cinema opened its doors in Oswestry. The new arrival has found its feet now with a great mix of offerings - the latest films going round the country, lesser-known titles, children’s movies, documentaries, and the always-popular National Theatre Live screenings. At an open meeting last month, the owner Tatenda Jamera, revealed big hopes for the building in Arthur Street - including lift access, the redevelopment of the underused ground floor, and a second screen. Frustratingly there are still people who seem unaware that Oswestry HAS a cinema - so do spread the word and do keep coming to help Maona continue to grow. Check the latest schedules at www.maonacinema. com - there’s a licensed cafe-bar, and at your local community cinema you can be assured always of a warm and personal welcome.

Recipe

Miso cod and crispy rice salad

Pickles and Hampers make loving gifts

Serves 4 Preparation time 20-25 minutes, plus marinating Cooking time 45-50 minutes

IngredIents

• 100g miso glaze (store-bought) • 4 x 180g cod loins For the crispy rice salad • 2 x 250g packets of microwave basmati rice or 500g cooked rice • 1 tbsp sesame oil • 1 tbsp soy sauce • 1 tbsp sesame seeds • ½ cucumber, chopped into small cubes • A good handful of sugar snap peas (about 100g), sliced lengthways • 2 tbsp chopped coriander • 1 tbsp chopped mint, or a few small mint leaves For the salad dressing • 2 tbsp soy sauce • 1 tbsp rice wine vinegar • 2 tbsp mirin • 2 tsp sesame oil • Juice of 1 lime

Method

1. Pour 25g of the miso glaze onto each cod loin, spreading it out evenly. Leave to marinate for about 30 minutes or up to 4 hours (or overnight if you can). 2. For the salad, mix the cooked rice with the sesame oil and soy sauce, ensuring the grains are well separated. Sprinkle over the sesame seeds and mix through again. 3. Preheat the oven to 200°C, fan 180°C, gas mark 6. Spread the rice out on a baking tray and cook for 30 minutes, giving it a good stir a few times during cooking. 4. Meanwhile, make the salad dressing by whisking all the ingredients together in a small bowl. Set aside. 5. Once the rice is golden and crispy, remove from the oven and transfer to a large heatproof bowl. Add the chopped cucumber, sugar snaps, coriander and mint, then stir through the dressing. This can be served warm or cold. 6. When ready to cook the cod, roast in the baking tray in the oven for 12-15 minutes. 7. To serve, spoon the crispy rice onto serving plates and serve the miso cod on top or alongside.

This column has been a place where I have written about food waste and how to prevent it, this month’s article is taking a different focus. Have you heard about a group called Food and Community Oswestry? It is a group of people in Oswestry who have been meeting since April this year to talk about food and community. The conversations are focused on talking about food security and local resilience. Whilst we are currently experiencing a glut of food in the system, this may be a rapidly changing scenario as food shortages emerge from poor harvests globally, as a result of the extreme weather conditions being felt across the world. This will impact the amount of food available and the cost of it. The increase in fuel cost and the possible fuel shortages will also impact the cost of food to the consumer. The Guardian newspaper recently published an article highlighting the governments campaign telling people to stock up on tinned foods and be prepared for national emergencies such as flooding, extreme heat or cyber-attacks. However, the government does not yet have a plan on how to feed people if there are food shortages. If the government is slow to act and local councils are not responding to this situation, then it would appear that it is up to people in the local community to act and look for ways to build resilience on a local level. Conversations around setting up local food buying groups, (food co-operatives) are emerging from the Food and Community Oswestry group seeking to create opportunities for people to come together, enabling them to buy food at discounted prices from places like FareShare UK (a food distribution charity, saving good quality surplus food from going to waste). Economies of scale will allow groups to buy in bulk and therefore save money. If you are interested in learning more about this initiative then keep an eye out for posters, Facebook or the Oswestry Climate Action Hub for more information.

A Little Gem at Llangedwyn Mill There’s a café that’s quickly become much more than somewhere to stop for a cup of coffee. Open for just over a year, Millie’s Café at Llangedwyn Mill Workshops, has successfully established itself locally, bringing together good homemade food, a warm welcome and plenty of personality. Owner Ceri named the café after her then puppy, Millie, with the name also giving a little nod to the site’s past as the old sawmill for the Llangedwyn Estate. And history is a big part of its charm. The building that houses the café was once the Bridge Inn, serving the estate until the late 1950s. After falling into disrepair, the site was given a new lease of life in the 1980s when Antur Tanat Cain lovingly restored it and transformed it into workshops supporting local crafts and trades. Today, the workshops remain a home for craftspeople, artists and creatives, while Millie’s has added another reason to make the trip to Llangedwyn. For Ceri, good food is at the heart of everything. Homemade dishes and cakes are a speciality, with particular attention given to people who might normally struggle to find something tempting on a café counter. Millie’s Café also caters for the gluten and dairy free folks out there. The food has certainly made an impression on visitors. One customer described Millie’s as “a unique

Afternoon tea for two

Ceri also makes candles

style cafe offering a wide range of food, drinks, snacks and treats”, while another visitor, who had spent six months travelling around the UK, declared its English breakfast “the best they had eaten on their travels”. There’s more to Millie’s than food, though. Ceri and her three daughters have thrown themselves into making the café a lively part of the local community, organising events and parties throughout their first year. Halloween celebrations, Mad Hatter’s Tea Parties and pizza parties have all brought plenty of fun and games to the Mill. With indoor and outdoor seating, ample free parking and dogs welcome too, it’s an easy place to linger over coffee and cake before exploring the workshops. Its riverside setting adds another reason to visit. There’s plenty more planned at the Mill - Llangedwyn Mill Workshops’ Christmas Craft Fair takes place on 14 and 15 November, while next year Millie’s is looking forward to joining the Bike & Brew Passport Event, supporting a mental health charity. Millie’s Café is open Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays from 10am–4pm. Follow on Facebook @Millie’s Cafe. Whether you go for breakfast, homemade cake, a browse around the workshops or simply somewhere a little different to spend an hour or two, Millie’s is well worth discovering. Wellness

Nourishing Your Nervous System by Jenna Ward, Life Coach and Reiki Practitioner. Fatigue, a short fuse, struggling with clarity or decisionmaking, emotional overwhelm, generally feeling a bit fried, stressed or anxious. If you can tick any of these as something you’re feeling, the chances are your nervous system is taking a bit of a hit. Our nervous system is designed to help us survive stress and then return to balance. The problem with modern life is that there are stressors everywhere, and we often have to consciously choose to return to balance rather than it happening naturally. Alarms, mobile notifications, work pressures, home pressures, delays

when we’re in a rush - in fact, just being in a rush is a stressor. Our nervous system doesn’t know we’re not being chased by a sabre-toothed tiger; it simply registers that our heart rate is up, our breathing is shallow and our body is tense. Take a pause now. Take a deep breath, let your shoulders relax and your jaw release. Let your nervous system know: you’re safe, all is well. It’s not about being calm all the time, but about flexibility: • Mobilising energy when needed (‘fight, flight or freeze’) • Resting, healing and connecting when safe (‘rest, digest and heal’) Slowing down, taking pauses and resting are all ways of signalling safety to your nervous system. Rest isn’t always sleep - it can simply be powering down, sitting or lying in

stillness and silence, closing our eyes or staring at a tree for a few moments. Breathwork, grounding, gentle movement, hugs and meditation can all help calm and nourish our nervous system. With this in mind, I’m offering a weekly invitation to pause and fill your energy cup up: Pause & Relax. Each session includes gentle breathwork, guided meditation and lying-down relaxation with soothing music. There’s nothing you need to think about or ‘do’. Everything is guided. All you need do is arrive and ‘be’. Tuesdays 5:45 - 6:45pm Open Space Studios, Oswestry. First session complimentary. Please message to book: 07396 948 653.

Sleep – Go with the rhythm of the season and give in to a bit more hibernation! Prioritise this over everything for mental and physical healing. Try the Headspace app for meditations if you struggle to sleep. Morning sunshine – Studies show people who get adequate natural daylight (especially before noon) tend to sleep better at night. A morning walk counts but volunteering with an outdoors charity can help too. Try Shropshire Wildlife Trust 01743 284280. Move every day – Five minutes of squats as you unload the dishwasher or a couple extra times up and down stairs can make a difference. Try The Soma Space at the Memorial Hall for sessions combining strength training and exercise with mental health (trauma informed) education to assist you in building, enhancing and maintaining all round mind-and-body wellbeing www.thesoma.space. Stretch – Before you get out of bed curl into a ball to stretch your spine then stretch out long and wiggle you toes and ankles to loosen up. Hydrate – most of us don’t drink enough water and this often feels harder when it’s colder. Hydration is essential for brain function if you feel foggy, muscle action if you feel achy and helps you digest your food. Smile – listen to a podcast, head to a comedy night at www.thebuttermarket.co.uk Shrewsbury or laugh with a friend it’s a great release of endorphins and tricks your brain into thinking you are happy! Play the Glad Game (from Katie the Happiness Coach, katiethehappinesscoach.co.uk)– list at least five things you’re grateful for every night before bed. Stop smoking – from back pain to menstrual cramps smoking can increase pain levels by constricting the blood vessels and impairing healing and muscle function. Stargaze – feel the awe of the greater universe. Shropshire Astronomical Society have monthly meetings and public lectures to guide you: www. shropshire-astro.uk. Wild swimming – my favourite! Try Alderford Lake Whitchurch for a safe cold dipping experience and embrace the cold! Have a happy healthy month. Claire arnold The Meadows osTeopaTh CliniC

What Makes a Good Gym? When choosing a gym, it’s easy to focus on the most obvious thing: the equipment. Does it have the latest machines? Is there that particular piece of kit you’ve seen the influencers using on Instagram recently? While high-quality equipment is important, there is far Rad, Manager, PT & Fitness more to a great gym than Instructor the machines within it. Walking into a gym for the first time can feel intimidating, so creating an environment where everyone feels comfortable is important, regardless of age, experience or fitness level. You shouldn’t have to be fit already to feel like you belong. Having knowledgeable, approachable staff on hand can make a huge difference. Whether you’re unsure how to use a machine, need advice about a plateau in your training or simply want some new exercises, you should feel comfortable asking for help. This is why we have staff on hand throughout our opening hours at Coach

House Fitness, ensuring someone is always available to offer support and guidance. It might not be the most exciting consideration when choosing a gym, but cleanliness and maintenance can have a real impact on your overall experience. Equipment, changing facilities and training areas should be kept clean, organised and well maintained. A well-cared-for gym shows attention to detail and demonstrates that the people running it care about their members’ experience. A good gym also needs to fit easily into everyday life. With a town-centre location and free on-site parking, Coach House Fitness makes it easy to combine your workout with running a few errands or grabbing a coffee with friends. When getting to the gym doesn’t feel like an inconvenience, finding time to train becomes that little bit easier. Ultimately, a good gym is about much more than equipment alone. Quality facilities matter, but so do the people, the environment and how you feel when you’re there. After all, one of the simplest ways to stay consistent with exercise is to actually enjoy where you train. To learn more, visit www.coachhousefitness.net, or to book a free 30-minute consultation and gym trial, email us at info@coachhousefitness.net.

Health with Dr Paul Middleton

“I would like to lose weight: but I hate losing!” Anon There were at least three major campaigns to help people lose weight in my career and historically weight loss advice can be found in ancient Greece, Persia and India: it’s not a new problem. Now it seems we have the answer – the new GLP-1, or glucagon-like peptide receptor agonists. People lose between a tenth and a third of their body weight over the first year. Why do I remain a sceptic? My previous experience taught me that people lose weight quite quickly if they are keen to do so. The trick was keeping it off. These new drugs have the same issue – after stopping these drugs people put 60% or 2/3 of the weight back on. Two in three people do stop treatment after a year and most weight loss is only maintained with continuous dosing. The NHS is rationing its resources here: only a small number of very overweight patients with weight-related illnesses get offered treatment. Most people have to find the £100--£400 per month and

an organisation to provide a prescription. The NHS does offer a free 12-week weight management programme where your GP Practice refers you for an app-based support system that generally means you lose 4kg. This programme does encourage healthy lifestyle changes that many persist with. Up to 65% of patients stop GLP agonists because of side effects (mostly nausea, diarrhoea and constipation). Some people lose their enjoyment of food and sometimes enjoyment of other activities too. A significant component of the weight reduction is muscle loss: sadly, the weight gained after stopping is fat gain! So, in summary, there are new drugs making pharmaceutical companies huge profits (I read Lilly are making a million dollars every 25 minutes here!) that to work well, are a lifetime commitment and have significant downsides. For a few patients these drugs are a godsend. I have my doubts for the rest of us.

YOUR NEXT STEPS AFTER AN INHERITANCE Losing someone you love and inheriting money at the same time is a strange, often overwhelming combination. Grief and financial decisions don’t sit comfortably together, and yet suddenly you’re expected to make sensible choices about a sum of money that may be larger than anything you’ve handled before. Here, Craig Roberts, Oswestry-based independent financial adviser and director of Belgrave Wincham, shares a few helpful pointers… Give yourself time. There’s rarely a deadline attached to an inheritance once you’ve received it, so try not to feel rushed into making a decision. Putting the money in an easy-access savings account for a few months while you process things can be a perfectly sensible first step. Check where it’s protected. If you are holding a large sum in cash, however, remember that the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS) protects up to £120,000 per person, per institution if a bank fails, with temporary cover up to £1.4m in some circumstances. Spreading larger amounts across more than one institution can provide protection while you decide what to do next. Think about tax. Inheriting money itself isn’t usually taxed as income, but what you do with it afterwards might be – for example, any interest, dividends or capital gains could create a tax bill. So, understand your allowances, including your £20,000 annual ISA allowance, before making any significant moves. Consider the bigger picture. When you’re ready, think about what could genuinely improve your life – be it paying off debt, topping up your pension, helping someone you love, or setting yourself up for the future. It’s less about getting it ‘right’ and more about getting it right for you. Don’t go it alone. An inheritance can feel like both an opportunity and a responsibility. Talking things through with an independent financial adviser can lift some of that pressure and help turn a difficult moment into something that can support you for years to come. For more information, call Belgrave Wincham on 01691 886554. This article is for information purposes and does not constitute financial advice, which should be based on your individual circumstances. It is based on our understanding of legislation, whether proposed or in force, and market practice at the time of writing. Levels, bases and reliefs from taxation may be subject to change. The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) does not regulate Inheritance Tax Planning. A pension is a long-term investment and the value is not guaranteed.

With rising vet costs, can we have a “pet-nup” drawn up? Q: My husband and I are getting a divorce. We are making a joint application and doing it ourselves to keep the costs down. We have two middle-aged labradoodles, and we have agreed that they will live with me because my husband is frequently away on business. We stopped paying out for pet insurance some time ago as the monthly cost rose year on year and was considerably outweighing the cost of annual vet bills we incurred. However, as they are now getting on a bit, I am concerned that future costs could increase for me. Is there such a thing as a ‘pet-nup’ that I could get drawn up so that my husband has to share the ongoing costs? A: The first thing to say is that even if you are planning to apply for a divorce without the help of a solicitor, you should bear in mind that formally ending a marriage is not the same as formally ending your joint financial affairs. So it is hugely important to ensure you have legally severed all financial ties with a former spouse, otherwise they could make a financial claim against you at some point in the future, despite being divorced from you. This is why many DIY divorce couples opt for legal assistance to get a consent order that finalises the split of their finances and property. In that consent order you can include a “petnup” setting out who has responsibility for taking care of your dogs, both in terms of daily care and ongoing medical costs. Such legal agreements are becoming more popular as vet bills rise and pets get caught up in marital disputes. The “pet-nup” is a deed of agreement which expresses the intention of the signatories to be legally bound by its terms. Such an agreement can be drawn up at any time, not just during a divorce, and is also favoured by co-habiting couples who are not married.

From changing the world to making a difference in Oswestry From wanting to change the world as a human rights lawyer, Angharad Hird now makes the world a better place for people in Oswestry through her role at Lanyon Bowdler. Angharad is an Associate Solicitor in the Oswestry office, working in the private client team, and says her time studying human rights law has stood her in good stead for helping clients in a range of challenging situations. “I help clients during the difficult times that they might be going through, whether they have lost a family member and are dealing with the probate, or they are trying to put something in place in terms of Wills or Lasting Powers of Attorney, and I guide them through that process,” she says. Angharad did a traditional law degree and then a Masters specialising in human rights, particularly focusing on children’s rights. “I thought I was going to

change the world,” she laughs. “Unfortunately, that didn’t quite happen, but it did enable me to gain a lot of skills in dealing with difficult situations, which have transferred into what I do now.” Angharad then trained at a law firm in Cambridgeshire, which involved some time in the private client team - and she was hooked. “To be completely honest, I thought private client work would be boring,” she says. “I thought I would just be sitting in the office all day drafting Wills - but my whole outlook changed after just one week and I have loved it ever since.” Now Angharad is in Lanyon Bowdler’s Oswestry office after starting at the firm just under four years ago. “I really enjoy being in Oswestry,” she says. “As soon as I visited the town I knew I wanted to work in Lanyon Bowdler’s Oswestry

office - it’s a great town with lots of independent shops and little cafes. It’s just a nice place to be.” One of the things Angharad values the most at Lanyon Bowdler is everyone’s willingness to work together for the good of a client. Many people, particularly agricultural clients, often require a number of different legal services which they may not be aware of, as Angharad explains: “A client might come to me for a Will or tax planning, and as part of that we take a holistic approach to see what else they might need to support them,” she says. “Whether that’s drafting a partnership agreement or dealing with the transfer of land to different generations to maximise any inheritance tax relief, everything we do is in the best interests of our clients.”

Architectural designers among best in West Midlands after award win A local firm of architectural designers is among the best in the country after winning a major award for an innovative development of three new homes near Oswestry. Ke-design, based in Oswestry, has been named as the regional winner in the Best Small New House Development category of the LABC (Local Authority Building Control) Building Excellence Awards - a significant accolade in the construction industry. The firm will now go to the overall final in January where its work designing three highly energy-efficient homes in Coopers Lane, Porth-Y-Waen, Oswestry, could result in a national award. Craig Marston, managing director of Ke-design, said the project was a “designer’s dream” with a site which enjoyed spectacular views but also presented a challenge. He said, “It’s a designer’s dream when the client puts 100% faith in your design ability with a brief of ‘design what you think is best’. We were grateful to be given the opportunity to bring our vision into reality with this development. “Although the site is in a fantastic setting, the slope posed an interesting design challenge which we decided to turn into a strength rather than a constraint. The house designs embrace the site’s slope with split level floor plans. Each dwelling has a glazed double-height entrance, before a feature staircase goes down half a level to the open plan living space. “The whole aim was to make the most of the stunning views and bring as much natural light into each home as possible, and we were delighted with the end result. “It is always a proud achievement to see any project go from paper to a physical build, and to be recognised by the construction industry with this award is extra special. Being

able to go to London to be judged alongside some of the finest designs in the country will be a real privilege.” Mr Marston said he hoped the award would encourage other developers to have faith in more creative designs. “A sustainable home doesn’t have to be a grand design one-off,” he said. “This project is proof that speculative house builders don’t have to follow the same mould, and if you entrust the designer you can make a difference. “In this case, the client not only put faith in our design ability, but also our construction knowledge as they were not experienced in timber frame construction. Timber frame construction gives a highly-insulated airtight building envelope, which along with solar panels, underfloor heating and mechanical ventilation heat recovery, provides exceptional energy efficiency and low energy bills. “It would be great to think this project can set an example to other house builders that good design can be implemented, and that there is a demand for it. “Two of these homes were sold off-plan and we know from speaking to the residents how much they love them as family homes and really value the energy efficiency. “If any developers are considering bringing this kind of innovative design to their next project, we would be delighted to talk to them about working together.” The LABC Building Excellence Awards are the largest business to business awards in the building control sector, recognising quality and a commitment to driving up standards across the construction industry. The LABC network covers all local authority building control teams in England and Wales. For more information about Ke-design, visit www.ke-design.co.uk Oswestry life

20 Years of Keeping Oswestry Homes Warm Now we’re into the winter months, keeping our homes warm and energyefficient suddenly becomes a priority. For Ellesmere-based Princes LHS Ltd, 2026 marks an exciting year, with three significant anniversaries and a newly refurbished showroom helping homeowners explore smarter ways to heat and power their properties. The local business is celebrating 20 years of trading, 15 years of MCS accreditation and a decade as a Tesla Powerwall Approved Installer. Having worked in renewable energy long before it became commonplace, the team has built a wealth of experience in both traditional heating and modern technologies. Its recently refurbished Low Carbon Home Systems showroom in Ellesmere gives visitors the chance to see heat pumps, solar panels, battery storage and electric vehicle charging equipment from leading manufacturers, including Tesla, Samsung and Panasonic. With the cold looming just

round the corner, Princes LHS is encouraging homeowners to have their heating systems checked before temperatures plummet. “Don’t wait until the first really cold spell to discover your heating isn’t working properly,” advises owner Matt. From routine boiler servicing and repairs to installing air source and ground source heat pumps, Princes LHS offers practical solutions for keeping homes comfortable and running efficiently. Renewable energy installations are now its most popular service, with growing numbers of homeowners exploring solar panels, battery storage and heat pumps to help manage energy costs. What makes Princes LHS different is its ability to handle everything from plumbing and electrical work to complete renewable energy installations, with one experienced team overseeing each project. For anyone considering upgrading their heating or reducing

their reliance on traditional energy sources, the Ellesmere showroom is well worth a visit. Ellesmere Showroom Open Day – Friday 27 November, open till late. What customers say on Trustpilot: “…exceptional when installing our solar panels and battery storage. They did a very neat job…also helped sort a software glitch on the battery. Overall, cannot recommend this company highly enough.Graham.S, 5-star review, May 2026 For more information visit www.princeslhs.ltd, call 01691 624 336 or email mail@princeslhs.ltd.

Has the flip flopped? Rethinking property investment in an ever-changing market In recent years, the UK property landscape has undergone a profound shift. Tax adjustments such as Section 24, tightening regulatory compliance, and the introduction of the Renters’ Rights Act have created new considerations for private landlords. The main tenancy changes came into force on 1 May in England, creating distinct legislative timelines to keep in mind compared to areas like Wrexham. The era of effortless “house flipping” has drawn to a close, leading some accidental landlords to consider exiting the private rented sector. However, experienced voices emphasise that for strategic investors, real estate remains a compelling vehicle for long-term wealth creation when approached thoughtfully. The recent wave of regulatory changes has influenced property ownership across regions like Wrexham, Telford, Shrewsbury, and Oswestry. Many smaller landlords, particularly those owning just one or two properties, have felt the pressure of increased administrative tasks and liability risks, leading some to sell their holdings. At the same time, good small landlords who look after their tenants continue to play a vital, irreplaceable role in healthy local housing markets and community. Despite regulatory changes, property continues to offer clear structural advantages over many other asset classes, primarily driven by leverage and ongoing housing demand. Morgan Nunns, a local property expert noted: “Start with what you want the property to do for you, then check the local demand and all the 88

costs. Buying at the right price gives you room for things to go wrong, but it doesn’t remove the risk.” Securing stable underlying cash flow helps build resilience into your portfolio, but it requires careful ongoing management. A key mistake made by new investors is chasing trendy strategies without aligning them to personal goals, budget, or risk tolerances. Building a portfolio requires clear strategic segmentation: Cash-Flow Strategies: Utilising approaches like Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMOs) or holiday lets to generate regular operational income. Refurbishment Projects: Engaging in value-add projects to reinvest and build capital over time. Long-Term Holdings: Acquiring single-let residential units to support gradual capital growth over time. Venturing into commercial property can also offer longer leases and solid tenant retention, though it brings its own distinct set of risks, vacancies, and management considerations that require thorough review. So, has the flip flopped? Buying, renovating, and reselling can still work in today’s market, provided you buy at a genuine discount, manage your refurbishment costs strictly, and accurately budget for empty periods, finance costs, and fluctuating sale prices. Morgan commented: “Your purchase price is a big part of your

You must acquire assets with a sufficient margin to cushion against market changes, interest rate fluctuations, costs, or regulatory updates.” Rather than jumping between speculative trends, prospective investors are advised to build hyperlocal market expertise and maintain a long-term view. While individual tactics change, the core value of well-bought, responsibly managed real estate endures. Gardening

November in the garden by Graham Mitchell November can bring sharp frosts, heavy rain and blustery days, so simply work around the weather. If the ground is not frozen or waterlogged, you can plant bare-root roses, native hedging, fruit bushes and trees. Firm them in, add stakes where needed, water well and spread mulch without piling it against the stems. It is also an ideal time to plant tulip bulbs. Choose pots or a well-drained spot to resist rotting. Sweep leaves from paths and steps so they do not become slippery and rake them off the lawn so the grass can breathe. Cut away soggy or diseased perennial growth but leave strong seedheads standing for winter interest and wildlife. A layer of garden compost over empty beds and borders will also give worms something useful to work on. Move tender plants in pots into a greenhouse, porch or another sheltered place. Lift outdoor pots onto feet, make sure their drainage holes are clear and wrap delicate containers before a hard frost. If your soil is cold and wet, lift dahlias after the first frost. Clean the tubers and store them somewhere cool, dry and frost-free. Try not to walk on a frozen lawn, as your footprints can damage the grass. There is still plenty to enjoy in the vegetable patch.

Plant a pear

Plant garlic in well-drained soil or in modules under cover. Broad beans can be sown in a sheltered, free-draining spot. Pick leeks, kale, parsnips and Brussels sprouts whenever you need them. Stake tall sprouts so they do not rock in the wind, protect brassicas from hungry pigeons, and check stored apples, onions and potatoes. Remove anything soft or mouldy. Give garden visitors a helping hand by topping up bird feeders, putting out fresh water and cleaning feeding stations. Leave a small pile of logs or leaves in a quiet corner for insects and other wildlife and if you are planning a bonfire, check the heap carefully before lighting it.

Delivering professional driveway and garden solutions built to last.
