One Young Archer’s Climb to Success

Seventeen-year-old Alexander Hollinshead from Whittington has risen from trying archery at a Cub Scout evening to becoming the UK’s No.1 ranked junior clout archer and National Junior Clout Champion.

Alex first picked up a bow at Gobowen Scout Hut, but it was a ten-week Master of Arms Badge course run by Carl Hughes that sparked his passion. After COVID19 delays, he attended a taster session at Croesoswallt Archers in September 2021, where coaches quickly recognised his potential. He completed a beginners’ course in early 2022 and became a club

member later that year, with tuition by Head Coach Colin Chapman progressed steadily through shooting distances appropriate for his age.

Alex competes in both target archery (recurve) and clout archery (barebow), excelling in both disciplines. Recurve archery uses a modern Olympic style bow fitted with a sight and other accessories to aid precision and consistency, while Barebow archery strips the bow back to its basics, relying heavily on instinct, technique, and judging distance. Competing successfully in both disciplines highlights Alex’s adaptability and technical skill as an archer.

In 2025, he enjoyed an outstanding clout season, becoming National Junior Gentleman Barebow Clout Champion, England Junior Barebow Clout Champion, and UK No.1 Junior in the Clout Rankings. He also set a National Record for the Double Metric Clout (110m) and achieved Junior Master Bowman status.

Another celebratory St George’s Day Lunch

In target archery, Alex finished 7th in the UK U18 Men’s Recurve rankings, earned Master Bowman classification indoors and outdoors, and helped both the Shropshire and West Midlands Junior Teams secure gold medals. More recently, he placed fifth in the Adult Open category at the Shropshire County Championships, finishing just 24 points behind Olympian Patrick Huston.

Encouraging others to try archery, Alex said: “Archery really is for any age. You don’t have to compete, just enjoy the fresh air, the people, and the sport. Start with a taster session; you never know, you might catch the archery bug.” Looking ahead, Alex hopes to defend his National Clout title and maintain his position as UK Junior No.1.

You can follow Alex on Facebook at Alexander Hollinshead Archer. If you would like to try archery, then contact Croesoswallt Archers at: www.croesoswalltarchers.co.uk.

Last year saw the 21st Sunday Lunch to celebrate St. George and all things English. These lunches began with a small group of friends commenting on how St. David and St. Patrick are widely honoured, but St. George… not so much! And with that, this annual lunch to celebrate the patron saint of England started.

The 2026 lunch is being held on Sunday 26 April and will again be hosted by Oswestry Cricket Club. Lunch includes a glass of fizz upon arrival and a 3-course traditional Sunday roast lunch, served and provided by Oak Apple Catering.

The gathering includes a post lunch guest speaker, and all guests join in as we acknowledge St. George and England by singing Jerusalem, plus the wider United Kingdom and the Commonwealth with the national anthem (words are provided!).

We see many attendees on an annual basis, but over the years we have lost touch with a few guests… if you are one of those people and would like to join in again or if you are interested in attending a future lunch please email stgeorgesday2304@gmail.com with your name and contact details, and if you have been before then let us know!

Volunteers celebrated at special evening of thanks

League of Friends volunteers at The Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital (RJAH) have been celebrated at an evening of thanks, which took place on Thursday 29 January.

The event was organised to recognise and thank volunteers for the time, commitment and dedication they give throughout the year in support of patients, visitors and staff at RJAH.

Volunteers play a vital role across the hospital, from wonderful Ward Friends to Helpdesk heroes, they work to enhance the patient experience in countless ways.

The event was also attended by the charity’s Patron, His Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Shropshire, Mrs

Anna Turner, who joined volunteers and staff to recognise and celebrate their outstanding contribution to the hospital.

Anna said: “I was so pleased to have the opportunity to meet, thank and talk to some of the volunteers who are without shadow of doubt the nicest, friendliest bunch of people you could ever meet, they just love doing things to make other people’s lives better”.

The charity’s President, Lady Sally Kenyon, and Mr Brian Welti, Friends Trustee and Deputy Lieutenant, were also present, adding their support

and thanks to those who give so generously of their time.

Victoria Sugden, Friends CEO, said: “Our volunteers give so much of their time and energy to support the hospital, and it was wonderful to be able to bring everyone together to say thank you.

“The evening was about recognising how valued they are and celebrating the difference they make, while giving them the chance to relax and enjoy themselves together.”

Llwyd Mansion: Framing the Future Project takes important step forward

Llwyd Mansion is one of the iconic buildings of Oswestry. In 2023, Oswestry Town Council took the brave decision to purchase the Grade I listed building bringing it into public ownership for the first time in its history.

Oswestry Town Council are now putting together an ambitious project to restore the building and bring it back into use. This will be a lengthy process as they work to secure funding and build a project that will not only restore the building but bring it back into the heart of the community.

In 2025 the council was awarded a grant from The National Lottery Heritage Fund and Historic which enabled them to remove hairdressing equipment that remained from Toni and Guy along with modern partitions, stripping back the building as much as they can to its original shell. This has allowed the council to carry out a range of surveys to help understand the building and its condition. This is a vital piece of work as it will allow them to pull together a programme of works and understand costs which will go into the delivery phase application to The National Lottery Heritage Fund later this year.

If you would like to support the project, there are a range of Llwyd Mansion items for sale at the Guildhall and all monies raised will go to the project. If you don’t already, you can continue to follow progress on the Llwyd Mansion: Framing the Future Project via the Oswestry Town Council’s social pages.

Fancy a bike ride?

The Mule Cycling Club is always looking to welcome new members and would love to share cycling adventures with you. They are looking to establish a social riding group this year suitable for riders who are looking for a bike ride at a gentle pace covering a variety of distances. A series of social rides for potential new members, which they hope will be a great way to meet new people and see what the club is all about.

So, if you’ve got a new bike or have one lying unused in the shed or garage and want to get out on it more often, then these rides could be for you. If you are already an experienced and regular rider but looking for new motivation, the club want to hear from you too. There are ride groups to satisfy the speed merchants and the not-so-fast, ensuring no rider gets left behind.

Mule Cycling Club was created as an independent riding club in late 2025. The club is affiliated to British Cycling (the GB national governing body for cycle sport), Cycling UK (supporting all forms of cycling and protecting the interests of cyclists) and the Shropshire Cycling Club Association (the umbrella group for cycling clubs in Shropshire). They ride to suit all abilities, promoting the health and wellbeing benefits of

such an enjoyable and sustainable mode of transport. Cycling helps build fitness, confidence and bikehandling skills, helping you to be safe and responsible on the road in either a group or as an individual rider. The club welcomes both traditional and e-bike riders and the male and female members take part in most types of bike sports, including road, MTB, gravel, endurance and local cyclocross events.

At Mule CC, they believe cycling is better together, although members are equally happy to ride solo when necessary. “What we enjoy the most is just being out in the open air on two wheels, although on extremely bad weather days those lucky enough to have indoor bike training equipment stay connected via fitness apps and can indulge their competitive instincts in a warm and dry environment. We offer friendly, inclusive rides all year round at a pace to suit everyone using a mix of routes from scenic country lanes to mixed terrain and more rugged trails. We encourage each other’s personal riding goals, large or small,” explains Club Chair, Carl.

“Our members have a wide range of backgrounds and riding experience, which is shared freely to help each other learn and improve, enhancing the benefits the club brings to our community. This includes knowledge about how to set up and maintain your bike, the variety of local and regional cycling routes available (and even in other areas of the UK and overseas), solo and group riding safety and etiquette, and advice on all manner of cycling-related topics. Sometimes this can be as simple as who knows about local road closures or who can recommend a good pair of gloves.”

The club meets every Sunday outside the Mule bike shop in Oswestry for its regular road ride and there’s a Saturday option as well most weekends (when possible). They roll out at 9am in the winter months and 8.30am when the clocks change. Riders must wear a helmet. For further information, call into the Mule bike shop in Oswestry or look for Mule CC on Facebook and Instagram.

We would like to thank all the businesses that have kindly supported the magazine by sponsoring an award, therefore joining us in celebrating all the wonderful people, businesses and community groups that Oswestry has.

Special thanks go to the Flower Gallery, Pippo’s Bakery and Widnall Bakery.

OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT – SPONSORED BY APPROVED CARE

Nominee: Andrew Palmer Nominated by: Head of Engagement, Marketing and Communications for Pancreatic Cancer UK

“Andrew contacted us with Jen’s story just a year after she died. Although still grieving someone extraordinary, he was aware that, like Jen, 50% of people die from pancreatic cancer within just three months of diagnosis. He knew her experience could help others understand the urgent need for an early detection test and this selfless nature was evident from our very first conversation.

“Despite everything he and his family have been through, no ask was ever too much. Andrew was determined to help us reach as many people as possible, driven by the hope that sharing Jen’s story might spare other families from the same heartbreak his has been through.

“Although an incredibly busy man, juggling full-time work with caring for his four children, Andrew generously gave up his time to ensure that the breath test research announcement made a huge impact. He was an absolute star, appearing on media outlets like the BBC website, The Sun, and BBC West Midlands for his television debut.

“Our £1.1m investment to bring the world’s-first breath test for pancreatic cancer to a national clinical trial was a huge moment for people affected by this devastating disease. In the future, breathing into a bag at a GP surgery could be the important first step to being diagnosed in time for lifesaving treatment. The breath test has the potential to completely transform early detection and help to save thousands of lives ever year. However, we needed real stories from brave people like Andrew to highlight its significance to the wider public.

“People still tell us that they saw the announcement for the breath test clinical trial on TV, online or in newspapers. Thanks to Andrew, many more people now know about our charity, the work we do and, vitally, the symptoms that should prompt them to visit their GP. We cannot understate how grateful we are to him and his family for supporting us in Jen’s memory.”

One month in, and Oswestry is making it its own

In February, I wrote to Oswestry Life readers to say thank you and to invite the town to come and see what we’d been working so hard to create. One month on, I can honestly say the response has exceeded anything we imagined.

Since opening the doors to The Evo Project, we’ve welcomed people from every corner of the community. Some are long-time Evolution members who’ve been with us for years. Others are stepping into a gym for the very first time.

That’s exactly what Evo was designed for.

A SPACE FILLED WITH PEOPLE, NOT PRESSURE

What’s been most rewarding over the past few weeks isn’t just seeing the gym busy, it’s seeing how people are using it. Mornings filled with early risers finding their routine. Lunchtimes bringing in people fitting training around work. Evenings alive with classes, conversation and energy.

The gym floor, group training studio and Reformer Pilates studio have quickly become part of daily life for many in Oswestry. From strength training and circuits to Pilates and coached sessions, the variety of movement happening under one roof has been incredible to watch.

Just as importantly, the atmosphere has stayed exactly how we hoped it would, welcoming, supportive and unpretentious. People training at their own pace, encouraging one another and feeling comfortable enough to keep coming back.

CLASSES THAT BRING PEOPLE TOGETHER

One thing that’s been especially well received in these first few weeks is our class timetable, which is included as part of our basic membership. From high-energy sessions like Spinning and HIIT, to more accessible options such as Steps & REPS, Pilates, Yoga and our Intro to HIIT classes, the variety means people can train in a way that suits them. Whether someone is pushing themselves, learning the basics or simply enjoying moving with others, seeing our classes filled with people of all ages and abilities has been a real highlight and a big part of what’s making Evo feel like a community.

WHAT’S COMING NEXT

While the gym floor, studio and Reformer Pilates are now fully up and running, we’re not finished yet.

Over the coming weeks, we’ll be completing the final stages of the project, including our recovery suite and on-site café. These spaces are designed to make Evo somewhere you don’t just come to train, but somewhere you can recover, relax and connect and we can’t wait to share them with you when they’re ready.

THANK YOU — AND KEEP COMING

If you’ve already been through the doors, thank you for being part of the first chapter of Evo. Your support, feedback and positivity are much appreciated.

If you haven’t visited yet there’s no rush and no pressure, just an open invitation whenever you feel ready. This space isn’t going anywhere and there’s room here for everyone.

The Evo Project was never about a grand opening moment, it was about building something lasting.

One month in, it certainly feels like we’re on the right path.

Volunteers needed at Oswestry Community Action (OCA)

Oswestry Community Action (OCA) is on the lookout for more volunteers. Volunteer support is pivotal to the retention and growth of the fundamental services they have to offer to the people in the local and wider Shropshire area.

The services OCA offer have been developed in response to the needs of the local community and ultimately aim to keep them engaged and support inclusivity and wellbeing. The majority of their services are aimed at those who are disadvantaged which includes disability, health (including mental health), unemployment, rural poverty and isolation.

Their Community Transport Service is essential for enabling people in the community to get out and about with ease and makes a huge difference in their lives. The Dial-a-Ride and Community Car services are a large proportion of this service and offer door-to-door transport for people without access to public transport or a car. Journeys can include anything from grocery shopping, a trip to the hairdressers or even regular journeys such

as attendance at the OCA twice-weekly Wellbeing & Befriending groups, which help to maintain connection and engagement within the community.

Chief Officer at Oswestry Community Action, Kim Wootton says; “We currently have over 900 members signed up to our Community Transport Service, but we cannot service all of these people without more volunteer Community Transport Drivers. If more keen driver volunteers come forward and join OCA we will be able to continue our mission to combat isolation and rural poverty and improve wellbeing amongst the community.”

Without their fantastic, friendly team of volunteers, Oswestry Community Action wouldn’t be able to make the

Minutes with the MP

It feels good to be on the cusp of Spring. The dark nights are shorter, the birds are making their presence felt, and there’s colour in our gardens and parks again.

Spring is one of my favourite times of the year. There’s a great sense of promise and hope that accompany the shift in seasons.

This rhythm and regularity is comforting when we consider how much else is uncertain in our world right now.

And closer to home, recent months have seen several turbulent changes of heart from the Government. In fact, in just 18 months, Ministers changed their minds more than 10 times on different policies.

One of these U-turns saw the Government provide pubs with a 15% discount on what they were expected to pay in the way of Business Rates. This was small comfort to those hostelries who have battled against National Insurance Contribution

increases and higher energy bills for far too long.

But it didn’t go far enough and provides no help to shops or hotels facing a hike in property valuations –the measure that makes up Business Rates. Take the Pen-y-Dyffryn for example, whose rateable value had nearly quadrupled.

While the package announced for pubs and music venues was welcome, a lack of support for the wider hospitality and tourism sector is having long-lasting damaging effects.

Tourism is the lifeblood of our communities and the backbone of our economy, yet family-run businesses in Oswestry and the surrounding area have suffered through years of neglect.

Costs are spiralling out of control and footfall is falling. Even as we enter the busiest period of the year, many are struggling to survive.

If the industry is to be given hope for the coming months, the Government needs to take positive action and cut VAT to protect the hospitality and tourism sectors before it’s too late.

Pets are beloved family members, so it’s good to know that it’s possible to make arrangements for them in your Will if you’re no longer around.

Legal beagle?

In England and Wales, and in Scotland too, pets are legally classed as personal property – or chattels – similar to furniture or cars. This means they won’t automatically go to the person you might choose to look after them unless you specify this clearly in your Will. But it’s very important to discuss it with the potential future caregiver first, to ensure they’re willing and able to take on the responsibility.

Money matters

You can leave a financial gift to the person you designate to care for them, to help with costs such as food, insurance and vet bills. However, it’s worth considering what should happen to any remaining funds if they aren’t used up on your pet’s care.

Some people prefer to create a trust dedicated to ongoing pet-care expenses. This can be helpful for animals with high maintenance costs or long lifespans, such as horses.

Whether you are already a seasoned raw feeder or interested in switching your animals to a raw diet then we have everything you need and much more. As well as our large range of top quality raw minces, chunks and bones we also supply air dried chews and natural treats as well as herbal supplements to complement a natural diet. SOME OF THE BENEFITS OF RAW FEEDING: ■ Less Sensitivities ■ Great for allergy sufferers ■ Smaller less odorous poop

Clean teeth & breath ■ Shiny healthy coat

If you don’t have anyone suitable to name, certain charities offer pet rehoming schemes that can be written into your Will to ensure your pet is safe and looked after. More than talking: Local Mind Expert is Supporting Oswestry Men’s Mental Health

Oswestry Men’s Mental Health Support Club was created to give men a place to connect, share and improve their mental health and to break the silence locally…don’t suffer in silence.

Organiser Dane Coleman wanted a space for men to talk, but also a place where talking leads somewhere. He’s been bringing in local speakers because, as he puts it: “We want to give people an experience which is more than just talking, of course talking is the first step, but then what?”

That “then what” lands against a tough national picture. In 2023, male suicide rates in England and Wales rose to their highest level since 1999, with new survey data also suggesting, 15.4% of men in England experienced a common mental health condition in 2023/24 according to NHS England.

Dane’s answer is to blend peer support with planned topics, guest speakers and better routes into support. The club’s website describes the aim as providing “support, advice, and a space for men to connect and improve their mental health,” and says meetings will include planned discussions on key mental health themes.

Last month the group welcomed local mind mentor Marcus Matthews, founder of Make Your Life Count. Marcus is an advanced clinical hypnotherapist whose work has gained media coverage and awards, including support for Channel 4’s SAS Who Dares Wins contestant Charlotte Fisher. Marcus reached out after Charlotte’s early exit from the show and supported her to tackle panic and anxiety, with Charlotte saying she wants to return to the challenge.

Marcus also gained widespread media coverage including in OK Magazine, when in 2022 he helped former pop star and Queen of the Jungle winner Kerry Katona with her mental health. But the reason Marcus resonates with many men is simpler than headlines. “In 2018 when I was suicidal as a serving police officer, the services on offer didn’t help me, they made things worse,” Marcus said.

“I had one question - Why Do I Feel The Way I Do? No one could answer that, so once I discovered the truth about how the mind works, my mission became helping people understand that very thing and not what they’ve been sold about mental health.”

Marcus setup Make Your Life Count after a breakdown while serving as a police officer.

For Dane, that combination of lived experience, local

credibility and practical tools, fits the club’s direction for 2026.

Oswestry already has strong support options, but Dane and Marcus want to complement these by adding regular speakers and local services into a weekly peer space, so men leave with momentum as well as empathy.

“In the name of bigger and better for 2026 I welcomed Marcus to support the group because he shares our vision, to create open and compassionate conversations for men, which are followed by action, so more men can move their mental health mountains,” he said.

Oswestry already has strong support options, but Dane and Marcus want to complement these by adding regular speakers and local services into a weekly peer space, so men leave with momentum as well as empathy. Marcus said, “It’s all about giving people informed choice about support services available.”

Join in - Oswestry Men’s Mental Health Support Club meets every Wednesday at 7pm at Oswestry Senior Citizens Club. Find out more on the group’s website www.ommh.org.uk. Shropshire charity launches coffee mornings to combat loneliness

A Shropshire advocacy charity committed to supporting disabled and vulnerable people has launched a series of coffee and chat mornings aimed at combatting loneliness.

Oswestry-based Shropshire PCAS (Shropshire Peer Counselling & Advocacy Service) hosted the first event at Oswestry Memorial Hall in Smithfield Street in January with further monthly dates to follow up to and including April.

The charity says the dark and often cold winter months offer little comfort to people who may be living alone and have little or no contact with anyone for long periods, and hopes its new Winter Warm Up: Coffee and Chat get-togethers will encourage people to venture out and engage with the Shropshire PCAS team and others who find themselves in a similar situation.

Tarrah Lewis, Business Development Manager at PCAS, said, “Far too many people are experiencing loneliness, and this time of year often makes the situation worse. Many confine themselves to their homes with a general reluctance to go out and there are those who simply have no one to visit them.

Far too many people are experiencing loneliness, and this time of year often makes the situation worse.

“PCAS works with many vulnerable people who find themselves in these circumstances, which is why we have decided to launch a series of coffee dates in the coming months where anyone can come along for a couple of hours and chat.

“The first one was a great success, and others will follow on 17 March and 21 April. They are all on Tuesdays and all run from 10am until noon at Oswestry Memorial Hall. Our aim is to combat loneliness and people are welcome to drop in for a warm drink, homemade cakes and a friendly chat.

“We will also hold a raffle, which will help us in our efforts to support the vulnerable in our community. The events provide the opportunity to meet the PCAS team and discover how, together, we can help prevent isolation and loneliness during the winter months. We are also keen to hear from anyone who would like to

help us put on the coffee mornings by sponsoring the events.”

Shropshire PCAS has been a lifeline to more than 11,000 disabled and vulnerable adults across Shropshire and Telford and Wrekin for more than 30 years with advocates and volunteers at its Oswestry base working with clients who often have no one else to turn to.

The charity supports clients, most of whom live alone and have no family support, through complex issues including housing problems, safeguarding concerns, social care access, energy bills, and health challenges. But, despite the lifechanging support Shropshire PCAS provides, it receives no statutory funding for its core advocacy service and relies entirely on grants, donations, and fundraising.

For more about Shropshire PCAS visit shropshirepcas.co.uk or call 01691 658008.

If you go down to the woods...

As the seasons begin to turn, the woodland on the Llanforda Estate takes on a different feel. The days are noticeably longer, the footpaths become busier, and there’s a sense that people are ready to be outdoors again. For Woodland Roots, which is based there, this shift marks a natural point to reflect on the year ahead and how people are choosing to spend their time outside.

Founded and run by local outdoor instructor Tom Wright, Woodland Roots is centred around helping people spend time outdoors in ways that feel practical, engaging and well supported. Working with schools, young people, families, adults, and organisations, the emphasis is on learning through doing and making the most of time spent outside. Much of the work involves supporting young people as they develop and build on outdoor skills. School and youth group

sessions might include fire lighting, shelter building or campcraft, but the value often comes from how those skills are learned. Working together, making decisions and taking responsibility are all part of the experience, alongside a strong focus on safety and respect for the woodland environment.

Adults come to Woodland Roots for a variety of reasons. Some are keen outdoor enthusiasts looking to develop their skills, while others are simply looking for a change of pace from everyday routines. Spending time outdoors, working with hands and materials, tends to shift attention away from screens and schedules and onto what’s happening in the moment.

work with younger people. Woodland Roots is running its Summer Bushcraft Week again this year, alongside the launch of a new Easter Bushcraft Club, giving young people the opportunity to spend their school holidays, developing skills and confidence in a familiar setting.

Woodland Roots also now offers accredited Outdoor First Aid and Emergency Outdoor First Aid courses. Aimed at outdoor enthusiasts through to those working professionally outside, they focus on building practical skills and confidence for situations where help may not be immediately available.

This year, Woodland Roots is expanding its programme with the introduction of Cook and Camp sessions, which invite participants to build their own shelters, cook over an open fire and spend the night outdoors. Some sessions are designed for families, while others are aimed at adults only, offering a more immersive experience and time to settle into the rhythm of the woods. Holiday sessions continue to be an important part of the

There is also growing interest from organisations and businesses looking for team days that offer something different. These sessions are carefully facilitated, with a focus on shared tasks and time outdoors, creating a setting that often encourages better communication and collaboration.

As spring moves into summer, the woodland remains at the centre of Woodland Roots’ work — a place where fires are built, shelters take shape and people leave with muddy boots and new skills. It’s a straightforward approach, but one that continues to resonate with those looking to make the most of their time outdoors.

OF THE MONTH MARCH 2026

Election (15)

AVAILABLE ON BBC IPLAYER

Inspiring new films seem thin on the ground right now, so this month we’ll rewind to 1999 for a modern classic comfort view on iPlayer. Possibly the smartest and funniest American comedy of recent(ish) years, Election, stars Reese Witherspoon and Matthew Broderick, both at their peak.

Witherspoon plays overachieving high school student, Tracy Flick, one of those legendary comic creations you instantly recognise.  Flick seems a shoe-in for the role of School Council President, running unopposed until teacher Jim McAllister (Broderick) intervenes, claiming democracy must be demonstrated by a vote.

McAllister has his own agenda and persuades a popular school athlete to enter the election with disastrous results. The law of unintended consequences plays out as continued meddling gets McAllister deeper and deeper into trouble. The film flopped on release but made up for it with growing acclaim since.  With relatable characters and a razor-sharp script portraying impending comic disaster, Election is the rare comedy that’s funny from beginning to end. It gets my vote.

Borrowed Time

This is a bold, imaginative novel that blends fantasy, suspense and human drama into a fast-moving, emotionally charged story. Opening with a shocking supernatural bargain and a world where gods meddle directly in human lives, the book quickly pulls readers into a highstakes chase across realms. Ordinary people, troubled anti-heroes and celestial rulers collide in a plot driven by fate, sacrifice and second chances.

One moment we’re among emperors, demons and cosmic games; the next, we’re with characters trying to protect love, home and redemption. The writing is vivid and cinematic, with strong dialogue and striking imagery that makes each scene easy to picture.

Older teens and adults who enjoy inventive fantasy with grit and heart will find plenty to discuss.

Oswestry Film Society back in business

Friends old and new have welcomed the return of the Oswestry Film Society.

The OFS, which bridged the too-long screenings gap in the town, is now supplementing the full programme on offer at the new Maona cinema with Wednesday night showings.

It all started with a party atmosphere last month for the hilarious The Naked Gun reboot with Liam Neeson. This month (25 March) we have the glorious French comedy Holy Cow, and after that the acclaimed I Swear that’ll make you both laugh and cry.

You don’t have to be a member to watch these great films. The OFS is open to all: bookings can be made via the Quick Book section of the regular Maona website - www.maonacinema.com - or you can pay on the door.

Do also check out Maona’s schedule to see what’s coming up - try It Was Just An Accident - and support big-screen cinema (with its refurbished cafe & bar) back in Oswestry.

Jewellery and Coin roadshow

A very lucky couple called at one of our recent roadshow events with a couple of old gold chains and a silver charm bracelet and a bag of old silver British coins. We paid them over £1600 just for the coins alone. They turned out to be pre 1947 silver coins that were normal currency a few years ago and are now highly collected.

We asked them for their permission to pass on this story to help other people realise what they may be sitting on and they were only too pleased to allow us to let everyone know that they might be sitting on a goldmine and not even know it!

Like most people, who can only dream of winning the pools or the lottery, a lot of normal households have a hidden treasure of old gold jewellery, silver jewellery, teapots, trophies, trays and old objets d’art.

Mushroom and watercress French toast

This quick and easy anytime-of-day savoury dish isn’t just delicious; it combines the healthy super-ingredients mushrooms and watercress for maximum oomph!

Serves 1

Preparation time 10 minutes

Cooking time 10 minutes

INGREDIENTS

• 1 egg

• Salt and freshly ground black pepper

• 2 slices thick crusty bread

• Butter

• 50g grated Swiss cheese, grated

• 1 clove garlic, minced (optional)

• 100g mushrooms, wiped and halved

• 80g watercress, chopped

For more recipes, visit www.watercress.co.uk and for further information on the health benefits of watercress, visit www.thewatercresscompany.com.

METHOD

1. In a bowl, beat the egg and add a little salt and freshly ground black pepper. Dip in the slices of bread, covering both sides in the mix.

2. Heat some butter in a frying pan over a medium heat and fry the eggy bread for a couple of minutes, flip it and sprinkle the grated cheese over the side that is cooked so it melts.

3. Meanwhile, heat a knob of butter in a clean pan over a medium heat and add the garlic, if using, and the mushrooms. Add the watercress as the mushrooms start to brown and cook for no longer than a minute, so the watercress has just wilted.

4. Serve the mushrooms and watercress heaped on top of the cheesy toast and finish with a generous grating of black pepper.

Health with Dr Paul Middleton

“Anyone who has a heart…”

Some symptoms frighten us more than others –chest pain sits near the top of these. It is natural to wonder if any chest pain relates to one’s heart – and therein lies the anxiety: We all know we have only one heart! The good news is that other causes of chest pain are far more common. In General Practice almost half of cases are musculoskeletal coming from the muscles, tendons, nerves or bones of the chest wall and only about one or two in every 100 patients will be having a heart attack.

So, when should we be really worried? Sudden onset, severe pain is a danger sign, particularly if it is cardiac type pain; cardiac pain is rarely, if ever, a sharp pain. Patients have often heard of angina –more correctly angina pectoris – which derives from the Latin for chest strangling or choking pain. Some patients will say heart pain is not a pain at all but a pressure like feeling. If it radiates to the left arm

or jaw and is associated with sweating, sickness, shortness of breath or faintness then ringing 999 is the best course of action. Heart attacks or myocardial infarction are more common as we age and more likely if you smoke, are overweight, have a high cholesterol level or high blood pressure. Conversely sharp pain after chest wall strain or injury, sharp pain associated with stress, a fast pulse and dizziness or food related pain all suggest you need not worry about your heart. Chest infections can produce pain usually associated with cough, phlegm and often a temperature.

One of my favourite diagnoses was often in young patients with intermittent, very localised, sharp chest pain. It was often quite a severe, short-lasting pain and they were worried about their heart. They had “Texidor’s twinge”: a benign muscle spasm and could leave the surgery with a smile!

Training for Life: The Three Pillars of Health

Many people join a gym with aesthetic goals in mind. While this is completely understandable, a successful fitness routine can, and should, offer far more than looking good in a new outfit. A wellrounded approach can leave you feeling stronger, more confident, and even calmer in everyday life. As owner and founder of Coach House Fitness, I’ve built the club around the belief that the best long-term results come from balancing three equally important pillars of physical health: muscle strength, cardiovascular fitness, and mobility and flexibility.

The primary purpose of muscle isn’t simply to ‘look good’; it supports us every day, improving posture, helping us move more comfortably and protecting our joints. Even if building visual muscle isn’t a personal goal, our range of resistance machines, free weights and tailored training programmes can help all members build strength safely and effectively.

Cardiovascular fitness is the aspect many of us

associate with going to the gym. Think treadmill pounding or sweating on a cross-trainer. While there’s no need to take it to extremes, cardiovascular fitness is as important as muscular strength. A healthy heart and lungs support higher energy levels, improve everyday endurance, and play a key role in reducing the risk of chronic disease. Our dedicated cardio and functional training area, alongside both high- and lowintensity classes, allow members to train at their own pace.

The third — and often overlooked — pillar of physical health is mobility and flexibility. While it may not provide a post-workout ‘pump’, it plays a vital role in keeping the body comfortable and pain-free. Regular stretching, and learning to listen to your body, can also reduce the risk of injury and speed recovery. That’s why we offer members dedicated mobility and stretching classes every week.

Whatever your starting point, Coach House Fitness in Oswestry is proud to offer the support needed to develop all three pillars of long-term health. For more information, visit our website www.coahchousefitness.net

Animal Crackers

animals bring so much to our lives whether as pets or in nature. interacting with animals lowers stress hormones, reduces anxiety, alleviates loneliness and boosts mood.

Pet ownership, especially dogs, can encourage physical activity leading to improved heart health, lower blood pressure and also increase social connection as you meet new people on your daily walk or join owners’ groups. Having a sense of purpose is often overlooked in relation to health but caring for an animal gives structure and motivation to daily life that strongly support mental and physical health.

And just like that, spring is springing. Whether you’re feeling buoyed with renewed energy or not quite ready for spring just yet, March has arrived, carrying with it the promise of longer days, budding trees, blooming gardens and that quiet sense of excitement at unfurling.

At this time of year, it can be easy to lose sight of the intentions you’ve set for yourself - growing something, building something, learning something new, perhaps finally beginning that hobby you’ve been promising yourself for years (for me it’s learning Spanish). Spring offers many invitations of possibility that can distract.

When I was a child, I often played

catch with my Dad. He was always telling me, “Keep your eyes on the ball, that’s how you’ll catch it and when you throw it, keep your eyes on where you want it to go, that way you’ll hit your target” (or near enough).

It took me years to realise how deeply this applies to life.

Keep your eyes on the ball. Keep your attention on what you want and where you want to go.

If there is something you want to achieve, experience, see or create this year, keep it in view. There is no need for force or rigidity. As in meditation, where attention is soft and steady. Allow life to flow whilst keeping your focus on what matters to you. Small, intentional steps add up.

As spring unfolds and brighter days invite your attention, stay connected to what you want from

this year. Time moves quickly. Keep your eyes on the ball.

Life is full of distractions, and it’s easy to set dreams aside for habit and necessity. Working with a life coach can help you stay on track with what you want to build, grow and experience, offering space to reflect, clarity in decision-making and supportive accountability. Oswestry law firm GHP Legal has bolstered its dedicated Property department at 21 The Cross with the appointment of a new Senior Solicitor.

Janet Hawley joined the firm in January 2026, reflecting the firm’s continued growth and increase in conveyancing market share across the region.

Formerly a Partner and Head of Residential Property at a wellestablished Telford and Shrewsbury law firm, Janet had been keen to

New Senior appointment at law firm GHP Legal’s Oswestry office

return to her hometown to, she says, remove the need for a daily commute, support a better work-life balance and reduce her carbon footprint.

After gaining a degree in Law, Janet completed her solicitor training with Milton, Francis & Hughes in Oswestry, a firm that later became part of GHP Legal following its acquisition in 2018. She qualified as a Solicitor in 2002.

GHP Legal Senior Partner, Richard Lloyd, said, “In recent years our Oswestry Property department has enjoyed considerable growth and is now one of the largest in the region dealing with Residential, Commercial and Agricultural Property. We are now delighted to welcome Janet to the team.

“Janet brings first-class professionalism and extensive experience to the department,

Local Roots, National Standards

Most people assume secure document destruction is something only large organisations can access.

At EvaStore, we decided it should be available to everyone, without compromise on standards.

Based in Oswestry for over 20 years, EvaStore supports organisations across the UK with secure document storage, scanning, and confidential shredding. While our roots are firmly local, our approach is national in scope. We are ahead of much of the industry in adopting the latest British Standard for confidential waste destruction, BS15713:2023, reflecting the growing importance of traceability, evidence, and accountability in how sensitive information is handled.

Yet one of our most valued services is also the simplest: our walk-in shredding facility.

Anyone can bring confidential papers directly to our Park Hall site. There are no minimum charges, no specialist bags, and no complicated processes. We weigh what you bring, charge only for what needs destroying, and ensure it is shredded to the same high standards used for professional clients before being responsibly recycled back into the paper industry.

That balance between local access and professional

standards reflects EvaStore’s origins. When the company was established in 2003, the aim was clear: to build a secure, forward-thinking document management company with genuine local accountability and national credibility.

Managing Director Patrick Evans comes from a family that has operated businesses in Oswestry since the 1970s. Today, the wider group employs over 100 local staff. He also sits on the board of Oswestry BID, helping shape the future of the town’s business community.

EvaStore is also proud to support community initiatives, including long-standing fundraising for Hope House Children’s Hospices.

Whether you are a business managing compliance or a resident clearing out an overflowing drawer, EvaStore is here to make secure information management simple, reliable, and confidential.

Family law expert warns of greater domestic abuse challenges in rural communities

An Oswestry-based family law solicitor has highlighted the increased challenges faced by domestic abuse victims in rural communities compared to those living in urban areas.

Caroline Yorke, an associate solicitor at Lanyon Bowdler’s Oswestry office, says research had shown that victims in rural areas were half as likely to report domestic abuse than their urban counterparts, with the abuse going on for 25% longer before they report it.

“The problems were highlighted in a recent BBC Countryfile programme,” she said. “It was refreshing to see them tackle an issue that many family lawyers in our region frequently come up against.

“The obstacles I have seen which can hinder rural inhabitants seeking help for domestic abuse include geographical distance from vital services and support groups, distance from places of safety, and poor phone and wifi signal.

“There can also be issues with the presence of

weapons, usually properly licensed guns used for legitimate rural pursuits, which suddenly become instruments of threats.

“Social isolation can also often be a factor, especially if the victim of the abuse has moved into the area and the perpetrator comes from a large, well-known or established local family.

“A Government report into the safeguarding of women and girls has attracted criticism and the Government response, which was simply to say that they must focus on England and Wales as a whole, is inadequate which in itself perpetuates the view that there is no understanding of specific challenges faced in rural areas.

“Moreover, there appears to be no willingness to address or learn from this.”

The family law team at Lanyon Bowdler has seen a growing demand for its services in recent times and has welcomed a new solicitor to the firm’s Oswestry office.

Helen Davies qualified as a solicitor more than 15 years ago and brings a wealth of experience to her new role with Lanyon Bowdler, having worked for several firms across the north west of the country.

Westminster Stone Garden Paving: Family-run since 1985

As we move into 2026, Westminster Stone enters over four decades as a cornerstone of British landscaping. What began in 1985 has evolved into a thriving third-generation family business that remains as passionate about heritage and quality as the day the first flagstone was cast. Based in the heart of the Shropshire countryside, our story is one of tradition, craftsmanship, and a relentless commitment to being a wholly Britishowned manufacturer.

Handcrafting Traditional Excellence

Our reputation is built on our unique Stonecast flagstones. By sourcing original antique flagstones from historic sites across the UK, we use meticulous handmoulding techniques to create paving that is virtually indistinguishable from reclaimed stone. This instant maturity allows homeowners to add centuries of character to their gardens while benefiting from the consistency of modern manufacturing.

It is this unwavering eye for detail that earned us the coveted license for the National Trust Paving Collection, a range inspired by the footpaths and courtyards of Britain’s most cherished historic homes cared for by the National Trust. Whether it is the mellow warmth of the Hidcote flagstone or the traditional charm of Yorkstone paving, our products are designed to look like they have always been there.

Our Journey to Sustainability

At Westminster Stone, we believe that preserving our heritage requires us to look after our environment. We are passionate about making a positive impact on our built environment by using sustainable production methods and locally sourced materials.

In January, we reached a major milestone on this green journey with the installation of a 105kw solar PV system. This investment allows us to offset at least one-third of our total energy consumption through clean, on-site generation. The remaining energy required for our production is supplied by 100% renewable sources, ensuring that our manufacturing process is as mindful as the gardens our stones inhabit.

As a third-generation business, we are building for the generations to come. From our family to yours, we invite you to visit our newly refurbished Shropshire displays this Spring and discover how four decades of British expertise can transform your outdoor space.

white on

Bring freshness and simplicity to your home with an emphasis on different shades of this most neutral of colours.

Among many colour-of-the-year announcements, one always stands out: the prediction from the Pantone Color Institute. This time, its colour of the year is a white hue called Cloud Dancer, described by Pantone as ‘airy’, ‘ethereal’ and ‘billowy’, ‘a whisper of calm in a noisy world’.

Follow our guide to find out how best to use white to enhance your home.

Why white?

Using white extensively, from walls and ceilings to furnishings, window treatments and perhaps even floors, is an easy way to create harmony and provide cohesion from room to room. White rooms feel bright and spacious. They also make a great backdrop for art, books, plants and decorative accessories.

Where to use it

A white scheme can work well in both period and modern houses, and can help with small or dark rooms. Brilliant white paint used extensively, however, can make a space feel stark, especially when the room is north- or eastfacing. Choose a knocked-back off-white (like Cloud Dancer) instead. Shades of white with an undertone of yellow or pink feel warmer.

Choosing your shades

Whites and near-whites cover an enormous spectrum. Each one will look different in various lighting conditions, so try out sample pots, painted onto swatches of paper which you can move around.

Another consideration is the surface finish. These vary from chalky, matt emulsion to shiny gloss, and your choice will depend on the surface, how durable you need the paint to be and personal preference. Be guided by the manufacturer’s information and remember that combining different finishes of the same shade achieves a gently layered, sophisticated effect.

Use layered textures

Textures bring an all-white room to life with subtly pleasing contrasts, from the grain of limed floorboards to the soft weave of linen, the gleam of glazed ceramic to shaggy sheepskin. A successful white scheme carefully combines hard and soft, rough and smooth textures. For cosiness, add a soft rug to a hard floor or a woollen throw to a leather sofa. To emphasise light and space, consider elements such as satin-varnished floorboards, glosspainted cupboard doors, sheer curtains and silk cushions.

Create interest

Natural materials such as wood, wicker and terracotta complement pale hues, while brass, bronze or copper hardware adds warmth and shine. Wall art in matching frames, vases of flowers (dried or fresh) and plants with interesting shapes complete the look.

Peter & Carol Burt at Fold Cottage

Installed by QA Kitchens & Bathrooms in Church Stretton, this stunning project came together after Peter and Carol Burt visited our Craven Arms showroom, where they met Jack.

From the very first meeting, Jack helped guide them through the design process with patience and care.

Peter and Carol told us that Jack was excellent, he listened carefully to everything they wanted, took the time to understand their vision, and made them feel so confident that they didn’t go anywhere else after meeting him.

The installation was carried out by Charlie, whose work Peter described as exceptional. His attention to detail was incredible, and he kept everything spotlessly clean and tidy throughout.

Having restored the house himself, Peter found it difficult to let a company in to do work, but he said he trusted QA straight away.

The result is a beautiful, luxurious bathroom featuring a walk-in shower, a freestanding bath painted in a rich marine blue to perfectly match the furniture, and a finish that feels both timeless and indulgent.

Thank you, Peter and Carol, for trusting us with such a special space, it was an absolute pleasure

Transforming Spaces

Small Plot, Big Ideas

My plot is small. Very small. It’s not quite the sweeping, magazineworthy allotment I once imagined — but it is mine, and that’s what counts!

At first, I worried that a small plot would mean small harvests. What it actually means is creative thinking and a rapid loss of perspective when it comes to what qualifies as “enough containers.”

Despite its size, my allotment is extremely busy. I have raised beds, pallets and pots, along with the usual in-ground areas and, in a moment of true allotment innovation, old baby baths. Waste nothing has become my unofficial allotment rule. If it can hold compost and doesn’t collapse immediately, it’s officially promoted to planter status.

The baby baths are my proudest

recycling triumph — they’re deep and sturdy, so we’ll see how they get on with some potatoes this year!

Raised beds have been a revelation. They help keep the space looking organised and have made it much easier for me to plan what’s going where.

Then there are the pots. Lots of them. The upside is flexibility: if a plant looks unhappy, I simply move it somewhere sunnier and pretend this was the plan all along. I’m even trying a mini apple tree in one, so I can control the growth a little more.

We’ve already made a good start on planting, with onions and garlic safely in the ground. Now I’m eyeing up the next wave of crops. Peas are on the list although I’ll be starting those in small trays first along with brussel sprouts, cabbages and

spring onions. My first early potatoes should be going in soon too. I’m also looking at getting cauliflower and carrots started.

Right now, most activity is happening in the greenhouse. Seed trays are lined up neatly - for now! Everything looking like compost and optimism. But that’s the joy of it. Even on the smallest plot, there’s always room for hope and probably just one more pot.

March in the garden

The daffodils are out at last, the sun is climbing higher in the sky, and the days are getting noticeably longer. There’s no doubt about it — spring is on its way.

Officially, spring begins on the vernal equinox on 20 March, and the clocks go forward on 29 March, giving us those welcome lighter evenings. On that day the sun will set at 7.37pm. That said, don’t be fooled into thinking winter has completely loosened its grip just yet. We’re not out of the woods by a long shot. Cold snaps and frosty nights can still catch us out over the next couple of months, so it pays to keep an eye on the weather forecast and delay jobs if conditions aren’t right.

Hopefully, the spring bulbs you planted back in autumn are now putting on a good show. Once the flowers fade, remove the spent blooms, but resist the urge to tidy up the leaves. They may look a bit scruffy, but they’re busy feeding the bulb for next year’s display.

The weed battle begins in earnest this month, so staying on top of them now will save you work later. Avoid

hoeing when the soil is damp, as weeds are more likely to re-root. Keep an eye on new growth on vulnerable plants and remove aphids as soon as you spot them.

Hardy annuals, broad beans and parsnips can now be sown. You can also plant out hardy vegetable seedlings like beetroot, peas, and lettuce — just make sure they’re a decent size first and protect them if the weather turns chilly.

Finally, it’s time to plant early potatoes, which should be ready to harvest in 10-12 weeks. Short on space? No problem. Half-fill a 25cm pot with compost, plant a seed potato, and as the shoots grow, keep topping up with more compost. When the tubers are ready, simply tip the pot out and enjoy.

Happy gardening!

ARE YOU READY FOR THE END OF THE TAX YEAR?

The end of the tax year is one of those checkpoints that encourages us all to look at our finances with fresh eyes.

From unused allowances to lastminute contributions, it’s a good opportunity to make sure you’re not losing out. Here, Craig Roberts, director at Belgrave Wincham, shares a simple guide of allowances to review before 5 April this year.

1. Check your ISAs

The ISA allowance for the current tax year is £20,000 which you can split across different ISA types. Recent rule changes also allow you to pay into more than one ISA of the same type in a year (excluding Lifetime and Junior ISAs). Any unused allowance disappears on 5 April though, so it’s worth checking before then.

2. Consider pension contributions

Pensions can offer generous tax relief, with an annual allowance of up to £60,000, although this can be lower depending on your circumstances. You may also be able to carry forward unused allowances from the past three years, subject to conditions. This can result in significant tax benefits, but it’s a complex area, so if you’re unsure, it’s important to consult a financial adviser.

3. Think about Junior ISAs

If you have children or grandchildren, a Junior ISA can be a simple way to build a tax-free pot for their future. The allowance this year is £9,000, and all growth is free from income tax and capital gains tax.

4. Review capital gains

Alongside allowances for children, it’s also worth looking at your own investments. If you hold assets outside ISAs or pensions, the capital gains tax allowance is £3,000, and using it each year can help reduce future tax bills.

5. Use gifting allowances

H e l p a n d S u p p o r t

E n d p o i n t M a n a g e m e n t

S e c u r e D a t a E r a s u

Lastly, you can gift £3,000 to family and friends each year without it counting towards your estate. There are also extra allowances available for wedding gifts which can be helpful when thinking about longterm inheritance planning.

For advice on making the most of your finances, call Belgrave Wincham on 01691 886554.

This guide is for information purposes and does not constitute financial advice, which should be based on your individual circumstances. The value of pensions and investments and any income from them can fall as well as rise. You may not get back the full amount invested. Tax treatment depends on individual circumstances and may change.

Will proposed capping of Ground Rents reduce maintenance charges for my freehold property?

Q: I heard in the news the government is going to cap Ground Rents. I bought a house on a new development six years ago and pay an annual “maintenance” fee to a management company. I’ve never really understood why I pay this, as my house is freehold. The developer said the fee would be minimal, which it was at first, but it has since increased several times. Will the new Ground Rent cap mean my charges are reduced?

A: What you are paying is not Ground Rent. Ground Rent applies to leasehold properties where the homeowner does not own the land their property is built on.

Leaseholders often pay both ground rent and service charges, particularly in flats where the cost of maintaining communal areas is shared. As a freehold homeowner, your charges fall into a different category. Your confusion is common. In recent years, local authorities have increasingly refused to “adopt” roads, footpaths, green spaces and playgrounds on new developments. This means they are not responsible for maintaining them, and the cost is instead passed to homeowners.

Typically, the developer retains ownership of the communal land and transfers responsibility to a property management company. That company arranges maintenance and recovers the costs from homeowners. Sometimes the management company is jointly owned by residents; in other cases, it is owned by a third party.

There is currently no statutory cap on these charges. Where residents own the management company, they generally have greater control over costs. Where they do not, options to challenge increases are limited.

In summary, the proposed cap on ground rents will not affect maintenance or service charges payable by freehold homeowners.
