Fun football kicks off with The New Saints FC Foundation

Youngsters in St Martins have the chance to build up their football skills with a series of new sessions led by The New Saints FC Foundation.

The Foundation – the charity linked to Oswestry’s TNS Football Club - is running fun football development sessions at St Martins 3 -16 School on Tuesdays from 4.30pm to 5.30pm. The sessions are open to children aged 5 to 11 from Years 1 to 6 and cost £5.50 a session or £5 per session if block booked.

The Foundation will also shortly be launching a Football Association Wales football development programme in Oswestry called Footie Families for children aged from 2 to 4 years. This programme helps pre-school children build fundamental movement skills such as balancing, jumping, throwing and kicking and gives parents the chance to join in as well.

The Footie Families sessions will take place at The Centre, Oak Street, Oswestry on Thursday mornings from 10am to 11am for eight weeks from 27 February.

Further information and registration details can be obtained by emailing info@tnsfcfoundation.org.uk

Launch of Oswestry Cancer Support Group

Local Oswestry resident Linda Lade is starting a support group for any local people touched by cancer called Oswestry Cancer Buddies.

At present there is no ‘local’ cancer support this side of Telford so Linda aims to change that in a few weeks’ time.

Linda said, “As a person in remission from breast cancer, I know how important it is to talk to others that have been on their own cancer journey or also going through treatment, to exchange experiences and share knowledge. Not everyone

will be able to or indeed, if having treatment, have the strength to travel to Telford for a coffee or a chat. I want to change that by forming a local Oswestry group.”

Linda continued, “The Oswestry support group will be for any type of cancer, hence the chosen purple coloured ribbon which represents general cancers. We are for those living with the condition, newly diagnosed, in treatment or in remission. Also, for men and women and that includes carers of course. I’m currently looking for a venue

Oswestry-based charity, Qube have been successful in applying to the Tesco Stronger Starts programme for their project Expression Through the Arts.

Tesco Stronger Starts supports local community projects and causes across the UK. This year, they are running a grant programme in partnership with Groundwork UK, to give children across the UK a stronger start in life.

To get the Expression Through the Arts project off the ground, Qube need your help! The customer vote will run until the end of March 2025 at the Tesco Ellesmere store. The project with the highest number of votes will receive £1,500, the second placed project £1,000, and the third placed project £500. When visiting the store, collect a token and vote for Qube’s Expression Through the Arts programme.

that is in town with easy access and a private area for us all to get together with the first meetup organised for the beginning of March.

“If anyone would like to come along then please follow our Facebook page and the local press nearer the time for details. If anyone would like to chat over a coffee before then - just email or call me.”

Former Moreton Hall schoolgirl qualifies as a Lawyer

A young woman who was raised in Oswestry and educated at Moreton Hall School, where she received the Principal’s Award, has qualified as an accomplished commercial lawyer with GHP legal, one of the region’s largest and longest standing independent law firms.

Simran Shah had worked to fulfil her ambition of becoming a lawyer from the age of ten. Getting involved in her family’s business as a teenager she became fascinated by how businesses operated and how the regulations that were in place applied to them. This led to Simran taking a law degree at the University of Nottingham, and in 2022 she gained a Master of Law degree combined with the Legal Practice Course.

As a member of the high calibre team of solicitors, solicitor-advocates and other law professionals in the firm’s Company & Commercial department, Simran will be advising clients on a full spectrum of business matters, helping them to fulfil their objectives and improve their future prospects.

GHP Legal is a long-time supporter of the solicitor training programme, and as one trainee qualifies, another begins their journey. The latest recruit to step onto the ladder is Lucy Tucker, who also joined the firm

as a paralegal, in the summer of 2024, and was offered a solicitor training contract at the beginning of January 2025.

Prior to her appointment at GHP Legal, Lucy worked for two years as a senior paralegal at a Nottingham law firm where she specialised in commercial property for utilities. Since joining GHP Legal she has gained experience in property, civil litigation, probate and corporate law.

Brands at a Fraction of the Price

Many years ago, we moved from Liverpool to a small Welsh village. Our local shopping was the afternoon spent in Oswestry where we spent time browsing The Catalogue Surplus Shop. It had everything we needed without us having to travel into a city.

On purchasing the store in June 2024, saving something was at the forefront of our mission. To save a store that is an integral part of the local and wider community. To save the jobs of people who had been made redundant, and to save a way of people being able to continue to use the high street, especially those unable to use the internet to shop for goods that they need to keep them clothed and warm.

We have since learnt about the impact that providing surplus stock has on the environment alongside the socioeconomic benefits for those local and visiting Oswestry.

Waste is a massive problem in the fashion industry, only 15% is recycled or donated, and the rest goes directly to the landfill or is incinerated. Synthetic fibres such as polyester, are plastic fibres, therefore non-biodegradable and can take up to 200 years to decompose. Synthetic fibres are used in 69% of our clothing.

We all want to look our best, save some cash AND do

“We all want to look our best, save some cash AND do our bit for the environment and that’s where we at the Surplus Station can do our bit.”

our bit for the environment and that’s where we at the Surplus Station can do our bit. Willow Street has become a very important place for us. We have met so many locals and when we’re asked to provide something we try our best to make it happen. One previous owner Tracy, sadly passed and her brother Mark, has become a good friend and champion for us at The Surplus Station. We look forward to growing the store to provide clothing for all ages in Oswestry for many years to come. Call in, find what you need and see the friendly faces you already know.

Spring races continue with the Newtown 10k (25 May), where runners will be greeted with enthusiastic support from the local community along a well-designed, scenic route.

June is all about the highly anticipated Lake Vyrnwy Running Festival (28-29 June). This two-day event offers both 5k and 10k trail runs, giving participants the perfect blend of challenging terrain and breathtaking lake views.

A major highlight of 2025 is the introduction of the Chirk 10k (13 July). This brand-new race is set to be a showstopper, featuring a course that includes the iconic Chirk Castle, adding a historic and scenic twist to

the challenge. If you’re looking for a fresh challenge, this is the one to mark on your calendar.

As the year winds down, the Oswestry 10k returns on 12 October, a race consistently rated as one of the best 10ks in the country. The mix of an exciting route and the strong community support makes this event a must for any runner.

Finally, nothing gets you into the festive spirit like the Shropshire Santa Run (7 December). Whether you’re looking to round off the year with one last run or just want to have some Christmas-themed fun, this event is perfect for all ages and abilities.

More UK homes trust Aico to protect them

Keeping you and your family safe from Fire and Carbon Monoxide since 1990, Aico has home life safety products that your household can rely on. Safety first. Aico first.

Aico Celebrates 35 Years of Home Life Safety

This year, Aico celebrates 35 years of innovative technology, and quality alarms and sensors, which has led them to become the European market leader in home life safety.

Founded in 1990, Aico has cultivated a reputation for innovation, quality and excellent customer service, resulting in a portfolio of cutting-edge products and solutions that have set industry standards.

Aico’s pioneering technology offers a variety of alarms and sensor types to guarantee full-circle protection for every home. In addition to products, education is a key part of home life safety and therefore is at the core of everything Aico does. This is reflected in its multiple award-winning CPD-accredited training courses which ensure quality at every stage of the supply chain.

Aico designs products to simplify the creation of safer homes, this is demonstrated by the HomeLINK Connected Home Solution, which has grown to connect over 451,000 devices across the UK and 74,496 live gateway systems. These systems aim to support landlords and protect residents. It is also important that landlords keep informed about changing legislation to ensure they continue to stay compliant. Aico has supported and empowered landlords to network, develop and learn through the development of the Social Housing Professionals Network (SHPN), as well as the SHPN roadshow.

With the introduction of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme in 2018, Aico has accumulated 249 educational visits, including visits to schools and colleges, and students coming to Aico’s headquarters for the day. This initiative has supported over 16,400 students, and most recently in 2024 over 3,259. Additionally, the CSR team organise the volunteering programme which has accumulated 7,547 employee volunteering hours for 247 causes.

Neal Hooper, Managing Director, commented on Aico’s longstanding success.

“It has been an incredible 35 years of growth. Our market leading technology is being developed into new areas, further establishing our position as the dominant European manufacturer.

“The fact that we have colleagues who have been with Aico for the whole of its history, as well as a senior team wholly promoted from within, demonstrates the quality and loyalty that we are blessed with. We would like to thank all our clients for the support since 1990, without which we would not be celebrating such a milestone following another record year. It is massively appreciated.

“And finally, to the millions upon millions of households protected by Aico, thank you for choosing the very best solutions, it makes us very proud.”

Aico’s success is a testament to the dedication and hard work of the entire team, in addition to the unwavering support of its valued customers and partners.

Commercial & Finance Director, Matt Small, has been with Aico for almost 26 years and added,

“I joined Aico as a warehouse apprentice back in 1999. Over the past 25 years, my role has evolved significantly, and my warehouse days are well behind me - thankfully, as I don’t think I could keep up these days!

“I’ve had the privilege of watching the company grow and transform over the last two and a half decades. The technology behind our products has advanced dramatically, with innovations like RF connectivity, launched in the mid-2000s, now commonplace. While Aico has long been the market leader in fire and gas detection, our vision has expanded to position Aico as the leader in home life safety.

“Beyond the products, it’s our people who have driven Aico’s growth. I’m proud to be part of Aico’s management team, where I can continue to contribute to Aico’s success. It’s truly rewarding to watch the next generation of colleagues begin their Aico careers, be given opportunities to develop themselves, and witness the phenomenal progress we’ve achieved in recent years.”

As Aico enters its next chapter, the company remains committed to innovation, customer satisfaction, and sustainability growth.

Mother knows best

Recommended by mothers to daughters (and in some cases to granddaughters and even great-granddaughters), these beauty products have become true cult classics.

Those of us who love a good soak in the bath know just how important it is to use the right bath oil. It needs to be hydrating to skin and highly fragranced but not cloyingly sweet or overpoweringly floral. Olverum Bath Oil ticks all the boxes. Dating back to 1931, it uses a blend of essential oils, including fir, eucalyptus and lavender, which together create a spa-like fragrance that relaxes in minutes. Bliss. It may seem a tad steep at £43.50 for 125ml (www.spacenk.com), but half a capful is enough, so one bottle could last several months.

Most of us know the best products don’t always have the flashiest exterior. LOTIL is a prime example. The original Moisturising Cream has been soothing dry skin for more than 100 years. It’s rich, non-greasy and extremely hydrating. What’s more, it boasts antibacterial and antiseptic properties. Use it to ease eczema, psoriasis or razor burn, treat dry skin and heal winter-ravaged hands. The best bit? You can pick a 30ml tube up from www.lotil.co.uk for just £2.39, and the family-sized 500ml bottle is a steal at £11.99. It’s also available at Boots.

Weleda Skin Food is another dry-skin saviour. Formulated with plant oils, it’s extremely gentle but works wonders. The original Skin Food has been adapted into several newer products, from a cleansing balm to a night cream. The Skin Food Lip Balm, £7.75, provides immediate relief as well as helping to heal chapped lips over time.

Paula’s Choice is 30 years old. The company is a household name in the US and is growing in popularity here. One of its bestselling products is the Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant, which was launched 25 years ago and now sells at the rate of one every six seconds. It exfoliates, unblocks pores, clears blackheads and reduces acne. Less irritating than some other salicylic acid exfoliants, it’s a godsend for oily skin. It costs £35 for 118ml from www.paulaschoice. co.uk, www.spacenk.com, www.cultbeauty.co.uk and other retailers. As with any chemical-based exfoliation treatment, there is an increased risk of sun damage, so you’ll need to use SPF every day.

Vitamin E Moisture Day

Cream was one of The Body Shop’s very first products and is still a hit today. It’s suitable for all skin types, lightweight, easily absorbed and very hydrating. Key ingredients include hyaluronic acid (which helps your skin to retain moisture), grapeseed oil, shea butter, raspberry seed oil and, of course, soothing Vitamin E. The fragrance is subtle and comforting. As one regular user shared, “The smell always makes me think of goodnight kisses from my mum.” The 50ml jar costs £18 from www.thebodyshop.com.

Minutes with the MP

Post Office services are a lifeline for many in Oswestry.

From sending parcels to accessing essential banking services, they serve as a crucial hub for individuals and businesses alike. That’s why I am deeply concerned about the latest closure announcements in our town.

Earlier this year, it was confirmed that the Cabin Lane Post Office is set to close in July. This followed ongoing uncertainty surrounding the future of the Crown Branch on Willow Street.

The news is a huge blow to local people, particularly those in the Cabin Lane area and North East Oswestry who rely on these services every day. If these closures go ahead, Oswestry could be left with just one branch on Victoria Road—an unacceptable situation for a market town of its size.

Since these threats to our Post Office network first emerged, I have been fighting to protect services for Oswestry’s residents and businesses. I have met

with Post Office representatives to stress how vital it is that people continue to have access to a full range of services in the town centre. I have also called on Co-op bosses to safeguard the jobs of those affected by the Cabin Lane closure.

Most importantly, I have launched a petition calling for the full range of services at the Crown Branch on Willow Street to be protected. The response has been overwhelming—nearly 3,000 people have signed so far, demonstrating the strength of feeling in our community. You can add your name to the petition at helenmorgan.org.uk/oswestrypostoffice.

I know I am not alone in this fight. Local councillors, businesses, and residents are united in the view that we cannot afford to lose these vital services. I will continue pressing Post Office leadership to ensure that Oswestry is not left behind.

Our town deserves better than a stripped-back service that fails to meet the needs of the people who depend on it. We must all stand up for our Post Offices before it is too late.

Taking steps towards a polio-free world

Borderland Rotary Club’s Rotakids are Raising Voices & Funds to End Polio

March is almost here, and with it comes the return of an event that brings together local schools for the Rotakids Crocus Walk. But it’s not just a walk; it’s a statement and a chance for youngsters to take action in the fight against polio.

There are 11 fantastic Rotakids schools (all primary), all working in partnership with Borderland Rotary Club and chartered by Rotary International. The primary school children have taken on the challenge to raise funds for the global polio vaccination programme, and they’ll be doing it in a way that’s as joyful as it is meaningful: walking through our wonderful Cae Glas Park, surrounded by purple crocuses, while singing “We Are Shropshire”.

Why a Crocus Walk? Well, those vibrant purple flowers are more than just a beautiful sign of spring, they symbolise the battle against polio. When a child is vaccinated, their little finger is dipped in purple dye to ensure they don’t receive a double dose. Borderland Rotary planted 25,000 crocus bulbs across Oswestry to serve as a living reminder of the impact

we can have when we work together. While some have disappeared due to building work, the ones that remain still stand as a powerful reminder of hope and progress.

And that progress has been nothing short of extraordinary. Since 1988, Rotary has been a key partner in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, and we’ve seen a 99% drop in polio cases worldwide. An estimated 20 million children have been spared from this life-altering disease. What started as an endemic issue in countless countries has now been contained to just twoAfghanistan and Pakistan. But we’re not done yet. Recent outbreaks in other parts of the world are a stark reminder that our work isn’t finished. We must continue until polio is eradicated everywhere, for good.

Polio is a vicious virus. It attacks the central nervous system and can leave its victims with lifelong paralysis. Those of us who remember the dark days of polio might recall family members or friends who suffered. Thanks to vaccinations, we haven’t seen a case in the UK in years,

but that doesn’t mean we can afford to be complacent.

That’s where our young Rotakids come in. These children are proving that you’re never too young to make a difference. They’re out there securing sponsorships from family, friends, and school staff, knowing that every pound raised is another step towards a polio-free world. And here’s the best part: for every £1 they collect; the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation will match it with an additional £2. That means a single pound raised will provide vaccinations for six children. Six lives changed - just like that.

So, this March, as the children walk and sing their hearts out in Cae Glas Park, they won’t just be making noise, they’ll be making history. Every step they take, every note they sing, is a message to the world: we are not stopping until polio is gone for good.

TO MUZZLE OR NOT TO MUZZLE?

In the past, I would see dogs out on walks, wearing muzzles and, to be honest, looking thoroughly menacing. But my opinion changed when my labrador developed “senile reactivity”. It happened twice and was in response to pain and confusion, and nothing to do with raging aggression as some may presume. So, I sourced a pretty pink muzzle, blinged it up with some sequins to soften the look, and when we walked in busy dog areas, she strutted like the canine equivalent of Lady Gaga! In this situation, it brought peace of mind knowing that she couldn’t cause harm should some of her “senior moments” occur.

When should you muzzle a dog?

Even if your dog does not have a history of reactivity, it can be useful to use for brief periods. E.g.

• At the groomers/vets.

• If you know your dog tends to lunge or bark aggressively at others.

• If your dog is obsessed with stealing other dogs’ balls and toys on walks.

• The 1991 Dangerous Dogs Act require some specific breeds to be muzzled in public

When NOT to use a muzzle

Muzzles are only meant to be used for 10-15 mins max, when your dog is being supervised and when there’s

a genuine risk of harm. Muzzles shouldn’t be used to punish dogs or teach them a lesson.

They shouldn’t be relied on for other behavioral problems, like chewing, barking. They are NOT fashion accessories.

Which Type of Muzzle to Use

Basket Muzzle

They wrap around a dog’s mouth and nose. They are the more comfortable choice because they don’t force a dog’s mouth shut. Dogs can pant, drink, or eat while wearing some basket muzzles.

Soft Muzzle

Soft muzzles wrap around your dog’s mouth to hold it closed. This is less comfortable and can be dangerous because the design prevents your dog from panting, so it should only be used for short periods of time, and never during hot weather.

It’s better to be safe than sorry!

Focus on… Birds in Winter

through the lens of Graham Mitchell

One of the benefits of winter is that without all the foliage it is easier to spot and photograph our native birds. Did you do this year’s Bird Watch?

All the same, but all different at Cantiones Choir

Mixed voice choir, Cantiones, has been a long-standing contributor to music in Oswestry and the wider area for more than 40 years with a reputation for presenting high quality performances. To mark their 40th Anniversary in 2021 Cantiones brought Haydn’s ‘Creation’ to life at the Holroyd Theatre, accompanied by The Borders Orchestra and fabulous professional soloists. The choir performs four regular concerts each year and throws its musical doors open to other singers for annual ‘Come and Sing’ events. Other ad hoc community performances recently have included singing around the town for Love Oswestry, charity carol singing and a summer performance in Oswestry’s Cae Glas Park bandstand.

The choir’s repertoire for concerts is chosen not only to attract an audience but also to inspire the singers so great care is taken to choose concert programmes. Professional soloists and musicians are invited to achieve varied timbres, artistry and expertise. Generally, the repertoire encompasses a huge range and variety of classical choral works, but the choir is never afraid of the challenge of new and more modern pieces with a few swing and jazz-inspired numbers thrown in to the mix in the more informal summer concert. Of late the choir has showcased works by female composers such as Imogen Holst,

Judith Weir and Cecilia McDowall. Cantiones has benefited for the past five years from working with noted composer and musician, Martin Bussey, as Musical Director who developed the choir’s quality and repertoire and saw them through the troubled times of Covid. Regular zoom singing sessions, followed eventually by socially distanced singing in fields and car parks ensured the music never stopped! A particular highlight of Martin’s tenure was a performance of Elgar’s ‘Dream of Gerontius’ when the choir joined forces with Chester Bach Singers, Chester Philharmonic and three stunning professional soloists at a packed Chester Cathedral in 2024.

The choir is determined to develop in many ways and uniquely benefits from having a professional Vocal Coach, Sarah Wright-Owens, who assists the conductor in some rehearsals and runs the occasional vocal health and technique workshop. It is very important to the choir ethos to keep on improving vocal quality and musicianship however experienced the singer is.

There is an annual ‘Awayday’ when members of the choir visit a new location with different acoustics to practise technique and go through new repertoire, finishing the day with an informal concert. The very sociable lunch is always a popular part of this event.

The choir’s warm and inclusive

spirit adds to the social side of the choir; many long-standing friendships have been forged amongst its ranks. This season the choir is pleased to have welcomed new singers in each voice section.

Martin Bussey retired as the choir’s Musical Director at the end of 2024 and, whilst he will be very much missed, Cantiones is delighted to welcome local well-regarded musician, Tony Coupe, in his stead. Director of Music at Ellesmere College, Tony is a conductor, composer and singer who brings a wealth of experience to Cantiones. Starting out as a chorister at Bristol Cathedral he went on to sing with Birmingham Cathedral Choir, Birmingham Oratory, Ex Cathedra, the Rodolphus Choir, and was part of the original cast of Sondheim’s ‘Saturday Night’.

Cantiones is continually evolving and looking out for new challenges to develop their choral sound and artistry. In 2025 under the baton of their new conductor, Tony Coupe, they will be exploring choral works by Mozart in the Spring with a selection of choral chamber works to follow in the Summer. It is planned to develop the considerable vocal talent within the choir itself to sing some of the smaller ensembles as well as inviting professional soloists to perform.

Cantiones’ Spring Mozart Concert will take place at 3:30pm on Saturday 12 April at Christ Church in Oswestry. We would love to see you there!

Musical Director, Tony Coupe.

Get set for the Derwen College 10km Challenge!

Students, staff and supporters are gearing up for Derwen College 10km Challenge, which sees the community come together, in Gobowen, for an inclusive event celebrating fitness and fundraising.

On Saturday 5 April, the college will host the event which sees participants tackle 10km in their own way to raise money for Derwen Charity. Entrants can run, jog, walk, skip or wheel a scenic route which starts and finishes at the specialist college in north Shropshire, winding through local country roads along the way.

Participants will start from Derwen College’s Gobowen campus site at 10am. Entry is £10 and will include a medal and goodie bag. Derwen Charity sports t-shirts will be available to buy separately at sign up and on the day.

Shorter distance options are available for those who can’t complete 10km. Families and supporters who are unable to take part, have the opportunity to sponsor a student. All students will be encouraged to get involved on the day and in the week running up to the challenge. There will be options to complete 1km every day in a variety of ways, including swimming, rowing, cycling and running.

Dogs are welcome, and

local running groups are encouraged to come along for a fun run. It’s a friendly, no-pressure event, making it the perfect introduction to a 10km distance.

Money raised will go to Derwen Charity towards accessible sports equipment for Derwen College students and clients. There is plenty of free parking, and Derwen Marketplace will be open, offering refreshments, and shopping opportunities for participants and their families.

Derwen College Community Fundraiser and Events Organiser Megan Charman is excited to launch the college’s second 10km Challenge event.

An evocative collaboration between internationally award-winning artists David Tovey and Surfing Sofas, Blood on Our Hands delves into the raw complexities of life, guilt, and survival in a fractured world. Through deeply personal and visceral works, the show confronts the weight of existing amidst chaos and questions what it means to bear witness to a "sick" society. odds often feel insurmountable.

Crumble in a Glass

Unlike a traditional crumble that ideally needs to be eaten freshly baked before it goes soggy, this topping will stay crisp and can be made well ahead of time.

Serves 4 | Preparation time 20-25 minutes | Cooking time 35-40 minutes

Ingred I ents

For the crumble topping

• 50g walnut halves

• 130g unbleached plain flour

• 80g demerara sugar

• 1⁄4 tsp ground cinnamon

• A pinch of sea salt

• 90g non-hydrogenated margarine, chilled

For the fruit base

• 500-600g fresh fruit, prepared weight (depending on the season, you can use mangoes, pears, apples, peaches, cherries or plums)

• 125ml water

• 6 tbsp agave or maple syrup

• 1⁄4 tsp bourbon vanilla powder or ground cinnamon

• 2 tsp lemon juice

method

1. Preheat the oven to 180°C, fan 160°C, gas 4 and line a baking tray with parchment. Spread the walnuts on a baking sheet and toast for 10 minutes (you can also toast more nuts than you actually need, to use them as a snack). Take the nuts out of the oven, let them cool and then coarsely chop them.

2. In a bowl, combine the flour, sugar, cinnamon and salt. Add the margarine and rub it into the dry ingredients until you get a fine crumbly consistency without big pieces of margarine left. Now add the chopped walnuts. Spread onto the prepared baking tray and bake in the preheated oven for 15-17 minutes, stirring it every 5 minutes to prevent uneven baking. Allow to cool and then store in a tightly closed jar.

3. Before serving the crumble, wash, peel, stone and cut your fruit into wedges. In case the fruit is very ripe and soft (this is especially the case with mangoes, peaches, apricots and pears), just blend them into a puree in a food processor or blender with the remaining ingredients. If the fruit is only fairly ripe or slightly under-ripe, put it in a saucepan and add the water (it should go 1 cm up the side of the pan), syrup and the vanilla or cinnamon. Cover, bring to a boil, lower the heat to the absolute minimum and simmer for 10 minutes, or longer if you want very soft fruit. Next, mix in the lemon juice.

4. Take a dessert glass and layer it generously with tablespoons of the fruit, then 3 tbsp of the crumble topping. Repeat with three other glasses and they’re ready to serve!

Fungi-infused coffee that boosts your health

Exclusive launch of the UK’s first wellness café & urban farm, where mushrooms meet coffee!

You may be used to starting your day with a caffeine hit, but have you heard about the long-lasting health benefits of mushrooms?

Shrooma is the first-of-its-kind mushroom wellness café in the UK where mushrooms and coffee are ground to perfection to help boost your body and mind.

Located in the heart of Oswestry in the Grade II listed former Dorothy Perkins building, Shrooma offers a range of high-grade mushroom extract powders which can be added to any hot drink for just £1. You can sip on a warming mushroom-infused tea or coffee which helps boost the body’s immunity and energy, as well as the brain’s focus.

In Spring 2025, fresh mushrooms, supplements and dried fungi will be available to buy in-store and online, while seasonal, organic mushroom-inspired dishes will be served in the café or available for takeaway. All mushrooms included in Shrooma’s menu will be grown upstairs in the ‘urban farm’. At full capacity, Shrooma can house 7,000 fruiting blocks, and produce half a tonne of mushrooms per week.

You can learn more about the process as well as the health benefits of intense Chaga, nutty Cordyceps, malty Lion’s Mane and earthy Reishi in one of Shrooma’s educational workshops.

Shrooma is the passion project of dynamic duo Alex and Paul Murray, whose love for mushrooms and wellness has come together to create this unique community hub. Thanks to a £5,000 funding boost from Oswestry Town Council’s ‘Breathing New Life into Empty Properties Grant’, it helped kickstart their dream into reality.

With their background in property development, Alex and Paul have restored the historic building to its former glory after it lay empty for three years. Mushrooms are sustainably grown and managed by long-time friend and eco-expert Matthew Rowe.

Alex Murray, café manager at Shrooma said, “We’ve always wanted to create a place where people can experience

the natural, healing properties of mushrooms in a fun, accessible way.”

Paul Murray, co-founder, said, “Growing up, I would go foraging for mushrooms with my dad, and that passion has stayed with me. Now, we’re bringing that love of mushrooms to the public, in a space where people can learn, relax, and enjoy something truly unique.”

Matthew Rowe, the mushroom farm manager said, “Mushrooms and the microscopic world of mycelia is fascinating. The network, sometimes called the ‘Wood Wide Web’, orchestrates the environment, communicating, warning of danger and sharing resources. The exotic mushrooms that we will be focusing on, like Lion’s Mane, Reishi and Cordyceps, are known as functional mushrooms. This means they’re beneficial to us but without the toxicity that comes with most medicines.

“Like the forest and mycelia, we believe that we are stronger together. This is why we have created the café as a space where people can come together to learn from the mushrooms collectively as a community.”

Mayor of Oswestry, Cllr Mike Isherwood, who cut the ribbon on launch day said, “We are pleased to be able to support Shrooma and wish them all the very best with their exciting new venture. The ‘Breathing New Life into Empty Properties Grant’ was intended to support new businesses to bring empty buildings back into use and to support them on their journey.

“Congratulations to the team at Shrooma, they have renovated the property to an amazing standard and the business is a great addition to Oswestry’s thriving independent offer.”

CHILDREN’S BOOK REVIEW OF

THE MONTH

MARCH 2025 Keep Smashing

Ballywalter (15)

AVAILABLE TO STREAM ON IPLAYER.

Patrick Kielty makes his acting debut in this beautiful little film, a two hander where he plays Shane, a man with a past needing a weekly lift from the small town of Ballywalter to Belfast for a course in stand-up comedy. Taxi driver Eileen is as caustic and prickly as he is reserved and withdrawn, but gradually the relationship between the two develops from disinterest to friendship as they open up about their lives. Seána Kerslake shines as Eileen in a film where comedy and pathos sit happily together. Your heart will be in your mouth as Shane nervously takes to the stage, cheered on by Eileen, in the fittingly lowkey finale.  Small scale and intimate, Ballywalter will have you rooting for the characters as they both start journeys to new places. Just brilliant.

Lili, age 14, Book Dragons Pirates! Romance! This book is amazing because Jodie talks about her challenges and how she has overcome them. She is a good role model because as a deaf person she still plays rugby and is on the TV show Gladiators. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes sport or female role models.

5 Mar: CAN YOU EVER FORGIVE ME? (15): Based on a true story, this is a fascinating black comedy about failed biographer Lee Israel. Her career had bombed and, desperate for money, she found a new vocation - forging then selling letters from stars and celebrities. Melissa McCarthy is magnificent as the rude, bad-tempered main character, abetted by Richard E Grant as her lizard-like drinking buddy.

12 Mar: CHUCK CHUCK BABY (15): Helen’s life working at a chicken factory and living with her ex-husband and his girlfriend is a grind, but her mundane world takes a surprising turn with the reappearance of her teenage crush to their claustrophobic town.

19 Mar: JOURNEY’S END (12A): Set in a dugout on the Western Front in 1918, this is the emotionally charged story of a group of British officers, led by a mentally disintegrating young captain, as they await a massive German attack. The OFS is showing this film to support Oswestry’s first Wilfred Owen Festival.

26 Mar: AGENT OF HAPPINESS (12A): The country of Bhutan invented Gross National Happiness to do just that, and in this documentary we meet Amber who travels door to door to assess how happy people really are. He also dreams of finding love: a happiness agent in search of his

own happiness. We go cross-country with Amber to meet citizens from all walks of life, reminding us of the fragility and beauty of our own happiness - no matter where we live. (Subtitled).

Oswestry Reading Group Invites New Members

Every week, The Reader brings people together at Shared Reading groups at its home in Liverpool and across the UK. Here, people connect and share experiences using stories and poems. There is no pressure to talk or read aloud.

Liverpool-based national Shared Reading charity

The Reader, runs two groups in Oswestry – one at Qube 2.30pm-4pm (every Monday) and one at Oswestry Library 10am-11.30am (1st and 3rd Friday of each month). Groups are open to everyone and free to all.

The group at Qube has been successfully run for 10 years by Helen Willows and a team of dedicated volunteers. Michelle Kelsall has been running Shared Reading groups for The Reader at the library for a year. She knew of the group at Qube when she worked there but at the time was unable to volunteer. But two years ago, she had the opportunity to do the volunteer training to lead another group in the town and jumped at the chance.

Michelle said, “Shared Reading groups are a great way to bring people together and give individuals a sense of belonging. There’s no pressure on anyone to read or speak, you can just come along and listen. As a Reader leader, I select a story and poem from The Reader library (which is huge!) and share it with the group on a Friday. We always have interesting discussions about what we’ve read and learn more about each other through the story.

“Long-lasting friendships develop, health and wellbeing are positively improved, and a journey of deep self-discovery begins. We offer a warm welcome to everyone.”

Katie Clarke, Director of Literature at The Reader, said, “Shared Reading is for everyone. Our vision is a world where ‘everyone can experience the power of literature to help us survive and live well.

“And the research reaffirms what we all know - that it works. Feedback Week 2024 results show us that 95% of

respondents say Shared Reading lifts their mood and 85% now feel like they belong more to a community.”

The charity has more than 420 Shared Reading groups across the UK and 850 volunteers. According to research, Shared Reading helps to improve wellbeing, reduce social isolation and build stronger, more supportive communities.

To find out more about Shared Reading groups meeting in-person, visit www.thereader.org.uk, email support@thereader.org.uk or call 0151 729 2200.

How your business can help men with a stoma

A local couple are calling for businesses to help support the Lingen Davies campaign, ‘Bins for Boys’. Danny LloydJones and his wife Cherida have quite a story to tell behind why he has a stoma and why installing a hygenic disposal bin in men’s toilets would greatly help men with specific health conditions.

Back in 2018, Danny had been experiencing some unusual symptoms and was back and forth to his GP trying to work out what was going on. But it wasn’t until February 2020, after a few investigations and his symptoms worsened, that he received his diagnosis of bowel cancer. Danny (31 years old) then went through major surgery for the stoma, a total of 86 treatments (radiotherapy and chemotherapy) and two rounds of ablation. He even participated in a clinical trial for a few months.

Coming to terms with a life changing event is no easy feat and Danny and Cherida have certainly shown strength with everything that has happened.

Whilst in the middle of his journey, Danny and Cherida went to a Lingen Davies ball and immediately connected with the charity and its mission. Danny has spoken openly about his journey and the stoma at Lingen Davies events after he was asked to join the campaign –something some people may find very difficult to do.

The good news is Danny’s latest scan is clear, but coming to terms with a life changing event is no easy feat and Danny and Cherida have certainly shown strength with everything that has happened. But having been given a stoma, the couple then found out just how difficult it can be to deal with the disposal side of things. Why would you find a sanitary/disposal bin in the men’s toilets - surely that’s just for the ladies? Well, when you think about it, there are a number of bladder and bowel conditions that men can suffer from (and women of course) that mean they will need to empty or change their stoma bag regularly. This can affect anyone at any age.

There are occasions when Danny has been unable to dispose of his bag safely and hygienically so has had to take it home with him. Unnecessary really, when all it takes is access to an extra bin in the toilets.

Lingen Davies launched their campaign and have now successfully had 11 businesses/venues sign up across Bishops Castle, including a pub and coffee shop. Danny and Cherida know that any Oswestry venues that sign up for this, will be leading the way to help men.

Danny says, “Accessing safe and hygienic bins should be available to all. A sanitary bin is such a small, yet effective measure to put in place for people like me and many others in our local community.

“I’m hoping that by speaking up about these issues, more traction is gained and local businesses help in supporting those in need.”

Healthy Focus Snooze Well

Sleep is the bedrock of good health in my opinion and has positive benefits for all the body systems. Here are some ideas to help improve yours in March the National Sleep Awareness month. Exercising for 20-30 minutes three times a week can help regulate your sleep - why not try Foil Fencing – Mondays at the Memorial Hall 07773 454157, Bouldering at Oswestry Climbing Den or Bowls with one of the clubs in town.

Alternatively take a brisk walk: oswestry Men: Walking and Talking, 7pm Thursdays, Red Square. Facebook: @Oswestry Walk: Men Walking & Talking. oswestry ramblers: provide a great programme of walks varying in length and location around Shropshire and beyond. Call 07986 506976, www.ramblers.org.uk/go-walking/ ramblers-groups/oswestry-group.

north Shropshire Walking for Health: is our local branch of this national organisation with weekly events for different levels of fitness. www.shropshiresgreatoutdoors.co.uk/walking/ walking-for-health.

Morning sunshine! Studies show people who get adequate natural daylight (especially before noon) tend to sleep better at night. A morning walk counts but volunteering with an outdoor charity can help too! Shropshire Wildlife Trust (01743 284280) and Whittington Castle Preservation Trust (01691 662500, info@ whittingtoncastle.co.uk), have a number of roles. There are also volunteer gardener opportunities at Hope House Children’s Hospice and RJAH Orthopaedic Hospital, a role that impacts on many lifestyle medicine pillars – exercise, community, a sense of purpose and sleep!

Some medications may cause daytime drowsiness or sleeplessness so have a quick chat with one of the pharmacists in town or ask your doctor for a medication review at regular intervals.

Taking long afternoon naps can interfere with night-time sleep patterns so set an alarm and don’t take longer than 30 minutes!

Go to bed at the same time each night and don’t worry about falling asleep when you go to bed, stay relaxed as the more you worry, the less you’ll sleep. Try meditation, journaling or even a simple list of ‘to do’s’ to get things out of your head before you settle down for the night.

Have a happy healthy month.

Trinity Clinic in Gobowen is thrilled to announce an exciting expansion as we welcome Lesley Mourtada to the team. Her arrival is in response to an increased demand for our holistic chiropractic services. Lesley is a compassionate chiropractor trained in the McTimoney method and we are delighted to have her on board to complement our team of highly trained specialists.

She brings a wealth of experience to the clinic, having spent 29 years as a qualified social worker specialising in safeguarding children. This background, combined with her counselling and psychotherapy skills, allows her to connect deeply with patients and foster healing and resilience.

Lesley’s expertise extends beyond chiropractic care. She is skilled in vagus nerve stimulation and offers daith piercings to help alleviate migraines, anxiety, PTSD, and other conditions linked to low vagal tone. Her approach combines innovative techniques with patient education, helping her clients feel their best inside and out.

When Lesley isn’t at the clinic, you’ll find her embracing her adventurous side. She holds outdoor qualifications in kayaking, climbing, mountaineering, and scuba diving. Whether it’s hiking, weightlifting, or exploring the great outdoors, Lesley believes in staying active to maintain balance and vitality, a philosophy she loves to share with her patients.

Chiropractic is a regulated primary healthcare profession, and our team prides itself on providing expert care. The team offers a range of therapies designed to help our clients including massage therapy, hands-on manipulation, electrotherapy and ultrasound therapy. Instead, we focus on delivering bespoke treatments tailored to help you achieve optimal health and wellness.

Bald guys do not have bad hair days!”

We spend a lot of time, and money, looking after our hair and some might say baldness has its advantages! For most people it is a source of anxiety. 80% of men will suffer some degree of hair loss and, perhaps a bit more surprisingly, 70% of women too. The global term for hair loss is alopecia which comes from the Greek word for fox! Apparently, the Greeks thought hair loss looked a bit like mange on foxes!

We all lose about 100 hairs per day but certain conditions can cause more significant shedding: stress, cancer treatment, any acute illness, weight loss and iron deficiency are the most common ones. Genetics play the most significant role in the more common male pattern hair loss (MPHL) and female pattern hair loss (FPHL). In women the hair loss is mostly from the top of the head and much less severe than in males. I saw some MPHL starting in men’s 20s and causing quite a lot of upset.

Anon

There are now more effective treatments although the NHS rarely funds these. Topical treatments are often successful and cost about £10-20 per month. They need to be continued or the hair loss simply recurs. Hair transplants may be very successful but are costly – often in the £1000s bracket (and sometimes the £10,000s!)

If you are losing more hair than expected or considering treatment then I would recommend a trip to your GP to discuss the options and plan ahead (sorry for the pun!) There are a lot of adverts on the internet for treatments, and one-size does not fit all, so some advice is wise. If you are considering transplant make sure the surgeon is registered with the GMC and the British Association of restoration surgery first. The www.nhs.uk site has some good advice on its hair transplant pages as well as more details on hair loss generally.

‘Training’ takes on a whole new meaning for GHP Legal

GHP Legal, which has offices in Wrexham, Oswestry and Llangollen, is better known for being a leading partner for solicitor training, but the firm, which this year celebrates its 55th anniversary, has long supported and encouraged staff to participate in sport and charitable fundraising events.

The firm recently announced its continuing support for Adrenaline Sporting Events, inviting entries from its one hundred or so staff for the Brynkinalt Running Festival and Welshpool 10k, which are both taking place in March. GHP Legal Partner and keen rugby player, Hywel Jones, says he is hopeful of a good response from staff before the entry closure on Valentine’s Day.

Meanwhile, 25 members of staff have so far entered for the Nightingale House Alyn Waters 5k and 10k runs due to take place in April. GHP Legal is one of the event’s sponsors and Euros Jones, a Partner of the firm, says he is hopeful that even more people will sign up.

Solicitor Mari Sherrington, who works in the GHP Legal Family Department, is also in training. Along with her partner, Leigh Calvert, she has signed up for the Liverpool Tunnel 10k run which takes place on 13 April. They are raising funds for Clatterbridge Cancer Charity in memory of Leigh’s father, Paul. Donations can be made to support their efforts via: https://www.justgiving.

Later in the year, solicitor Elzbeth Kenny, a member of the Criminal and Mental Health teams at GHP Legal, will be taking part in the Great North Run to raise money for the Hospice of the Good Shepherd. The Great North Run, held annually in Newcastle upon Tyne, is the UK’s biggest running event and one of the largest half marathons in the world.

A guide for treasure hunting in the Shropshire countryside

The prospect of unearthing buried treasure is a longstanding fascination for many of us, and metal detecting has never been more popular as a hobby.

Thousands of people regularly head out into the countryside with their metal detectors, hoping to find an interesting artefact - or even something of national significance which could end up in a museum.

But there are rules you need to follow in order to avoid any disputes over who owns the items you discover - with a large fine or even a prison sentence possible for not reporting a find of ‘treasure’.

Claire Vale is an associate solicitor at Lanyon Bowdler who specialises in helping people solve financial disputes. She also has a keen interest in metal detecting, so is the perfect person to advise on the correct procedure for safe and happy hunting.

Claire says, “The first thing you need to do is contact the

owner of the land for their written permission to search with your metal detector on their land. It is illegal to search on public or private land without permission, or to search on a designated area, such as a site of Special Scientific Interest.

“Secondly, you need to follow the Code of Practice for Responsible Metal Detecting which states that all finds should be recorded with the Portable Antiquities Scheme.

“Thirdly, how do we define what qualifies as ‘treasure’?

Well, the Treasure Act 1996 redefined the meaning of treasure for England, Wales and Northern Ireland. In broad terms, treasure now includes all objects containing precious metal that were buried for any reason and are at least 300 years old.

“Failure to record a find of treasure could result in a fine and/or up to three months in prison. Finds must be reported to the coroner in the district in which it was found within 14 days.

“It is thought that there is a huge amount of treasure just waiting to be discovered - why not get yourself a metal detector and start searching?”

For any advice relating to financial disputes, or any other legal issue, contact Lanyon Bowdler at www.lblaw.co.uk

Spring Chickens

Who doesn’t love a hen? These familiar feathered friends are just the thing for adding some decorative details to your home.

• There’s just something about a chicken design that makes a room more homely and comforting. Choose depictions of hens (adult female chickens) or roosters (those noisy grown-up males) for their warm colours, cute shapes and attractive patterns. They’re bound to add a touch of joy. And if you know someone who either owns or simply loves chickens, a chicken-themed accessory makes the perfect gift.

• Whether you choose a chicken mug, a cushion, some crockery or a fabric, the feeling you’ll evoke is almost certainly rustic, rural and laid-back. This isn’t a look that typically suits overly modern or urban schemes. However, if you’re trying to create a French farmhouse feel, a country kitchen or a warm and welcoming dining room, then fowl play might be just the thing.

For a sweet Easter display, this set of four hanging hens is the perfect addition. Country Flowers wood hen decoration set, £13.99, Gisela Graham London.

Home

With spring comes renewal, so why not start the season with an interior update?

Consider making some alterations at home to reflect the move from winter into spring. Whether you want to add in a few pretty accessories or embark on a significant overhaul, now is a great time to revitalise your rooms.

A clean start

Begin with a grand clear-out and a deep clean. Organisation is vital: set out boxes or bags labelled ‘repair’, ‘give away’, ‘long-term storage’, ‘rubbish’ and so on, and work through one room at a time. Then get to grips with the cleaning, working from top to bottom, for example, dusting the cornices before vacuuming the floor.

Pale and simple

If you’re thinking of buying new furniture, replace dark, heavy-looking items with pale timbers such as birch, beech or ash. Painted or lime-washed pieces fit this aesthetic, too, and choose simple, slender designs on tapering legs. The more floor that’s visible, the bigger the room feels.

Choose pale and pretty furnishings for a tranquil living room, along the lines of Nkuku’s spring 2025 range. www.nkuku.com.

Fresh, vibrant colours give this kitchen a welcoming feel. Tablecloth in Cow Parsley fabric, trimmed with Sow and Scatter, both £69 per metre; bench cushion in Lapland Stripe, £82 per metre; lampshade and cabinet curtain in Wild Fern, £69 per metre; all www.vanessaarbuthnott.co.uk.

Fresh colours

As springtime approaches, you’ll want to rethink your colour scheme in favour of pale, soft shades that reflect the burgeoning natural world. Vibrant green, daffodil yellow and hyacinth blue are very obviously spring-like, but you could consider a more subtle approach. This might include blush pink, creamy ochre or muted terracotta.

Natural materials and textures

Including a variety of textures within a room adds comfort and style. For spring, incorporate natural materials that feel fresh, light and organic. If you can, swap heavy, insulating curtains for lighter alternatives such as breezy linen or cotton in pale colours, and replace velvet or thick wool cushions, throws or bedcovers. Similarly, swap in woven sisal or jute rugs instead of ones featuring a thick pile.

Brighter lighting

Ensure your artificial lighting is soft and ambient. Add small lamps on side tables or shelves, spreading the glow. If you’re thinking about replacing any shades, look at delicate paper, translucent glass or woven rattan examples.

Spring accessories

Emphasise a connection to the natural, outdoor world with a few well-placed accessories in floral colours. As a finishing touch, add wall art in simple frames depicting floral or leafy patterns, botanical motifs or nature-inspired designs, and arrange flowers in pastelcoloured glass or ceramic vases.

Made to order and perfect for an all year round use.

Embrace your outdoor living with a beautiful handcrafted summerhouse and garden buildings which provides the perfect solution.

These unique structures are designed to enhance the beauty of any garden, transforming it into an inviting haven for relaxation, leisure, or work.

Let Sonia at Monks guide you to your new home

If you’re selling a property or hunting for a new home in Oswestry, there’s a good chance you’ll meet Sonia Jones.

Sonia joined Monks Estate and Letting Agents in June 2024 and her enthusiasm, warmth, and local knowledge have already made a fantastic impression. As the leading estate agency in Oswestry, with more properties to show than any other agent, Sonia is kept very busy.

“I feel I am helping people plan their futures”, says Sonia about her job. “With every viewing I could be introducing someone to their future home!”

A real people-person, Sonia makes viewings run smoothly for sellers and potential buyers. Linking unique facts on each property with her expert local knowledge, Sonia takes her role seriously, “I’m helping people take big steps forward in life, and it’s very positive!”

Born and raised in Oswestry, Sonia was a pharmacy technician and part of the Caxton Surgery family for

close to 30 years. An avid walker, she never tires of exploring the local area and can be found every week leading a group of dog-loving friends through Shropshire’s stunning countryside or up into the Welsh hills, which she insists rival the views of New Zealand!

Sonia has a keen eye for property and, when needed, can help buyers visualise how a new space can work.

She draws on her own experiences renovating a cottage in St Martins (whilst living on-site in a caravan with her young family for 13 months!) and designing her current home: a beautifully converted barn, once a grain store, where the open-plan kitchen and living space is her favourite feature and heart of her home.

One happy client recently shared, “The lady who does your viewings is lovely and friendly, a credit to your business!”

If you’re planning to buy or sell with Monks Estate and Letting Agency, rest assured that your viewings will be in Sonia’s safe hands. To arrange a valuation or viewing, email welcome@monks.co.uk or call 01691 674567.

Don’t miss THE property event of the year.

We understand that buying, selling or renting raises many questions –so we’ve brought together our fellow experts under one roof to provide answers and support on your property journey.

Visit Beautiful Private Gardens with the National Garden Scheme

The National Garden Scheme was founded in 1927 and opens around 3,500 gardens in the UK every year to raise funds for the nation’s best loved nursing and caring charities. Since its inception, the NGS has raised over £67 million with over £3.5 million donated to our beneficiaries in 2024. In North Powys we contributed over £51,000 of this and 6,875 visitors enjoyed our beautiful gardens (with home-made tea & cake of course!)

As we launch our new season, we invite you to visit over 70 special gardens surrounded by the spectacular Mid Wales countryside, 28 of which are new to the NGS this year. From the Berwyn Mountains in the north to the Brecon Beacons in the south; there are big country estate gardens, small town gardens, pretty cottage gardens, formal gardens and wild gardens, magical spaces all lovingly created by enthusiastic horticulturists. We also have 19 gardens open by arrangement for groups, so why not gather a few friends together or plan a visit to one of

our five village (group) openings. The new 2025 leaflet is hot off the press or visit www.ngs.org.uk

We start the year with a Special Event at Vaynor Park, Berriew on 30 April, 2pm-4.30pm. Set in rolling parkland with far reaching views over the Welsh border, this spectacular 5-acre garden, attached to a historic 17th Century mansion (not open) has a stunning springtime display of over 3,000 tulips on the long Victorian archery lawn flanked by wide herbaceous borders resplendent with geums, anemones, erysiums, alliums, lunaria and hesperis, magnolias, euphorbias, trilliums, erythroniums and bluebells.

A limited number of tickets are now available on the NGS website. There will be an introduc tory talk by owner Kate, followed by a guided tour accompanied by Kate and her gardener, Rupert Redway. Home made teas in the stables will be included following the private tour. Adults £25, pre-booking is essential by visiting findagarden.ngs.org.uk/garden/42634/vaynorpark

March in the garden

Despite the pleasant distraction of the early spring flowers, March is all about preparation, getting everything for the coming months. Our windowsills might be filled with seedlings, but that will continue and become increasingly crowded for another few months.

As those early flowers finish, dead head and tidy but leave the leaves to replenish the bulbs. There will be a lot of debris around, harbouring pests and disease. Tidying will let light and air in and you can spot the slugs and snails amongst the new shoots. Some grit around alpines will keep the foliage off the wet soil. My tomatoes are coming on now indoors and will need a little support. My little propagators are working overtime,

as each pot germinates a new one is added. The seed packets are lined up in planting date order like a production line.

Feeding plants is on the menu this month. As the plants spring into life, replenishing nutrients will help them on their way but do read the instructions. Too much feed can be as bad as not enough. Research what feed to use as some plants have very specific requirements.

Get your pruning done at the right time. You can safely prune those winter flowering shrubs when they finish blooming, and those that flower later in the season. Some like Cornus need to be chopped right to the ground for a great display later in the summer. Without regular pruning,

Mahonia can get straggly, so take off the top rosettes to encourage spread and more flowers next winter.

That extra warmth in March can heat up cold frames and the greenhouse, so make sure they’re well ventilated. Now is the time to look at some of those jobs that reap benefits later. How about a new water butt or two? Some plants like blueberries, should always be watered with rainwater. Make sure you don’t run out. A new compost for your garden waste will also reap benefits in a year or so.

YOUR ESSENTIAL END-OF-TAX-YEAR CHECKLIST

With the end of the tax year fast approaching, it’s time to check you’re making the most of your money.

From ISAs and pensions to inheritance tax planning and capital gains, there are a number of tax reliefs and allowances that you could be entitled to.

Here, Craig Roberts, independent financial adviser and director of Belgrave Wincham, shares a simple checklist to make sure you’re not missing out ahead of 5 April.

Maximise your ISAs

Do you have an ISA? If so, start by checking you’re using your full £20,000 tax-free allowance for 2024/25. With nearly £750 billion held in ISAs across the UK, they’re a great way to grow your nest egg, but remember that any unused allowance is lost when the tax year ends.

Boost your pension pot

Paying more into your pension can be a sensible step, as contributions benefit from tax relief and help you build a stronger retirement fund. You can contribute up to £60,000 depending on your income and it’s possible to carry forward unused allowances from the past three years too.

Start a JISA

For those with children, consider opening a Junior ISA (JISA). The annual allowance for a JISA remains at £9,000 and, as with an adult ISA, any gains made are free of UK income tax and capital gains tax.

Use your capital gains tax allowance

This year’s capital gains tax allowance is £3,000. If you hold investments outside of tax-advantaged accounts like ISAs or pensions, selling some assets now can be an effective strategy and reduce future tax bills.

Think about making financial gifts

Each year you can give away £3,000 worth of gifts without them being added to the value of your estate. Check other exemptions, such as tax-free wedding gifts of up to £5,000 to your children, too. Taking some time now to organise your finances can lead to meaningful tax savings. Call Belgrave Wincham on 01691 886554 for friendly, expert advice.

I entitled to half of assets my husband’s family gave us before we married?

Q: My husband fell out with his wealthy grandparents when he was in his twenties, but when I started dating him I persuaded him to try and build some bridges with them for the sake of the rest of the family. We eventually went to see them and I got on with them immediately and subsequently became very close to them. They thought the world of me and before we got married they gave us some valuable things for our new home.

Now my husband and I are leading separate lives and we have talked about divorcing. He says if we do he has a right to everything his grandparents gave us, because they were his blood relatives. Is this correct?

A: It is all down to whether assets are ‘matrimonial’ or ‘non-matrimonial’. Generally, the court’s view is that assets that have been acquired during a marriage are ‘matrimonial’ and that they should be shared between spouses even if one party may have contributed more to them than the other. ‘Nonmatrimonial’ assets are seen as assets that have been acquired by one spouse prior to the marriage and retained solely by that spouse.

There are however still some grey areas. For example, in some instances, ‘non-matrimonial’ assets can become considered fully or partially ‘matrimonial’ due to the way they have been used. Say one spouse inherited during the marriage but the inheritance was used for improvements in the marital home. In this case the court might decide on the apportionment, because the original asset has become mingled with the joint asset of the marital home.

One of the primary considerations in sharing out assets in a divorce is source and needs, and it is at the judge’s discretion as to how to achieve ‘fairness’. It is wise to seek independent legal advice at an early stage in respect of your options relating to financial matters stemming from your separation.
