Flagship Store for Hope House Hope House Children’s Hospices has announced exciting plans to open a new flagship superstore in Oswestry town centre. The new Oswestry store will open this spring at premises on Smithfield Street, which was formerly occupied by Argos. Work will begin shortly to fit out the superstore where the charity will sell an extensive range of new and pre-loved items donated by supporters who believe in what they do and want to help seriously ill local children. Hope House Head of Retail Suzanne Cumming said the new location was more than three times the size of the charity’s existing store on nearby English Walls, which would be closing in due course. “We already have incredible support for our existing Oswestry store from people in the surrounding area who bring us donations of stock and who shop with us,” explained Suzanne. The Hope House Retail Team would love to hear from anyone who is interested in the volunteering opportunities on offer (hopehouse.org.uk/ volunteer-in-our-shops) or who has items of furniture they would like to donate, which can be collected free of charge (hopehouse.org.uk/furniture). Alternatively, you can call the team on 01691 672607. Minutes with the MP By Helen Morgan – MP for North Shropshire It has been an incredibly busy first few months of 2024 for me, with a lot of issues I have picked up from speaking to thousands of people across North Shropshire being taken down to Parliament. Oswestry businesses had a recent mention in Parliament after I spent some time out with the Business Improvement District speaking to a number of town centre shops and hospitality businesses. A theme that arose was the unfairness of business rates, which continue to penalise high street shops despite our digital age. I raised the experiences that shop owners in Oswestry discussed with me, directly with the Treasury Minister. There had been major promises of rate reform before the last election, but no action has been taken – this must change. Knocking on doors and speaking to residents is part of my weekly schedule, something I feel all MPs should do. It keeps you grounded and it ensures that

you know what people are thinking and feeling about issues. It also brings home how in a democracy, we don’t all agree on everything, but a lot of common issues come up – the state of our health service, our terrible roads, and increasingly a level of interest in the General Election later this year. It will be the first General Election where North Shropshire will be seriously contested within living memory. Speaking to residents and getting out and about in our market towns like Oswestry and the countryside, you can tell people are thinking long and hard about their vote. Quite right too! One of the highlights of my February was celebrating Shropshire Day down in Parliament. As a local MP, my first priority is always to fight for our county, and I continue to be incredibly grateful for the privilege of representing my home constituency – which we all know is too often ignored. I put forward an Early Day Motion celebrating the day and was proud to fly our flag, bearing the loggerheads, outside Westminster Palace to mark the occasion and keep us on the map in Parliament.

Charity walk

Family Walk For Children’s Charity Do you like walking? If you’re looking for a walking event this year that fundraises for a local charity, the Oswestry Cambrian Rotary Club in conjunction with the Movement Centre, are holding the Oswald’s Trail circular walk on Sunday 4 August. This is something for anyone who loves to explore the local countryside but wants a structured walk that also benefits others. The route will take you 12.6 miles around Oswestry’s rich heritage, beautiful and historic countryside to raise funds for the Movement Centre based at RJAH. The Movement Centre provides life changing children’s physiotherapy, called Targeted Training. Helping children who have Cerebral Palsy, Down Syndrome or other diagnosis to achieve new skills, through increased strength and control of their movement. The walk will follow Oswald’s Trail circular walk, which was developed by the Oswestry Ramblers Club in 2013 to celebrate their 40 years anniversary. Entry for the walk is £10 per person, which includes drinks and cake at the halfway point on the Racecourse and a badge upon completion. Oswestry Cambrian Rotary Club are encouraging entrants to raise sponsorship where possible, which is greatly appreciated. The suggested amount to raise is £25.

Join in and support the Movement Centre for a great family day, take in breathtaking views and learning something of the history of Oswestry. This is a walk to be enjoyed. Entrants must register via the website by 31 July 2024. For more information, please visit www.oswestrycambrianrc.co.uk

Outstanding achievement Sponsor: Griffiths Hire Shops Winner: Alan Lewis Nomination from Alison Lee-Birch

LocaL Hero awards

The Oswestry Life Local Heroes Awards honour and celebrate the person or persons who are and have been making significant contributions to our community, through their time, actions, talents and dedication. These awards are to celebrate the amazing things that local residents of all ages have done or are still doing to help make Oswestry a better and safer place to work and live. The awards are to put the feelgood factor back into Oswestry and show how as a local community we can continue to support one another and rise up against challenges. We would like to thank all the businesses that have kindly supported the magazine by sponsoring an award, therefore joining us in celebrating all the wonderful people, businesses and community groups that Oswestry has. Special thanks go to The Flower Gallery and Pippo’s Bakery.

Alan ploughs so much energy and passion into arranging so many fantastic events for the town and our area, alongside raising vast amounts of money for local charities. He is a very selfless and humble person.

charity Fundraiser OF the year Sponsor: Martin & Jones Marketing Winner: The Graham Edwards Memorial Trophy Nomination from Claire Dwyer

I’m nominating this committee who will be celebrating 50 years of raising money for Leukaemia Research after Graham Edwards from Gobowen passed away from the illness. They’ve raised thousands of pounds, having continued fundraising through covid and the cost-of-living crisis, drawing in local football teams. This year they had a new trophy in memory of Dave Hartshorn who used to play in the tournament. This brings local village communities together each year.

carer OF the year Sponsor: Bluebird Care Winner: Jodie Bonner Nomination from Vicky Cottam

Jodie has gone above and beyond organising a raffle so she can raise funds to purchase Christmas presents for all our customers in Oswestry.

neighbOur OF the year Sponsor: Oswald’s Cars Winner: Stephen Davies Nomination from Ally and Dave from the Railway Tavern

Stephen has been an absolute rock this year ferrying poorly folk to Shrewsbury hospital to receive cancer treatment, often missing his own work. He has just been so supportive to people and we think he really deserves some recognition.

custOmer service/ diversiFicatiOn Sponsor: Oswestry BID Winner: Coach House Gym Numerous nominations received

I’d like to nominate Rad and his fabulous, dedicated team at Coach House Fitness. Rad took over the former Wynnstay Hotel gym in January 2023 and has since established a new identity in the town through his enthusiasm and customer service which is replicated through his professional team members. A totally relationship-based gym building a supportive environment for all members.

Sponsor: DRE Accountants Winner: Ellie Baldwin Nomination from Jade Baldwin

Sponsor: Tanat Valley & Light Railway Winner: Alfie Walker

Through her own personal health, Ellie has fought hard to get her job and dedicate herself to helping those who need it the most. She treats patients as people with feelings and not like a medical case.

YouNg VoluNteerS of tHe Year Sponsor: Oswestry Museum Winner: Trefonen Rotakids Nomination: Borderland Rotary Club

Back in September, Justin and Sherie Soper from Borderland Rotary Club joined twenty one pupils from Trefonen Primary School Rotakids Club for a community litter-pick of their local park. After a health and safety briefing and putting on their hi vis jackets and disposable gloves, the pupils working in teams and managed to collect and dispose of 13.8kg of litter from their park. It was great seeing the enthusiasm in the children as they got stuck into clearing up the litter and it did get quite competitive. Great work from the Trefenon Rotakids and nice to see a really clean park.

SportS perSoN of tHe Year Sponsor: Adrenaline Sporting Events Winner: Connor Beardmore Nomination from Tim Beardmore

Connor Beardmore has been an exemplar sports person throughout his youth having played international hockey as a goalkeeper since the age of 14 for both Wales and England. He became a retained firefighter 18 months ago, so had to retire from national league hockey to be able to commit to being an on-call retained fire fighter for Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service (Oswestry station). He recently raised £1600 running the Oswestry 10K in full fire fighter’s gear. Connor is worthy of this due to his passion for sport, amazing achievements and for finding a way to combine his pride for being a member of the fire brigade, with his passion for sport and fitness.

INSpIratIoNal YouNg perSoN

Nomination from Ellie Evans

Alfie (aged 12) was on a family holiday in Portugal and on the first day, they went down to the swimming pool to have some fun. Within half an hour of being there, Alfie found a young girl (aged 5) at the bottom of the pool, scooped her up and brought her out the pool beginning CPR on her whilst shouting his parents over. Alfie’s dad took over, the hotel called for the paramedics who then told the girl’s parents, if it wasn’t for Alfie’s quick reactions, she would not be here today. He saved a beautiful young girl’s life without a second thought for himself.

SpecIal recogNItIoN Sponsor: Oswestry Town Council Winner: Graham Mitchell (Grum) Nomination from Paul Marner

As an expat, who has never been to Oswestry, Grum, with his camera and choice of subjects, has performed a great service promoting the town and the surrounding area. I find his efforts inspiring and would love to visit or settle there. Western Canada makes it a long walk for afternoon tea. The history, culture countryside shown by Grum makes it very desirable. I frequently thank him for the pleasure he gives to me, and also to others. His skill and effort deserve recognition.

VoluNteer of tHe Year Sponsor: Friends at the RJAH Winner: Volunteers at RJAH Veterans Centre (namely Sarah, Susan, Lesley, Gordon and Sandy) Numerous nominations received

Six months ago, I walked into the Veterans Centre at RJAH a shadow of my former self, having been diagnosed with severe PTSD post military service. Without the support, signposting and tenacity of those named above I wouldn’t be here, I certainly wouldn’t be starting a new business.

Sponsor: Oswestry Rotary Club Winner: Connie Wilson

poSItIVe Impact award

Nomination from Charlotte Martayn

Winner: Oswald’s Cars

Connie was born at 29 weeks along with her twin brother George. We were told she would never walk or talk, but she’s proved the world wrong and is now a competition dancer for the Chloe Elizabeth Dance Company. As well as team dancing, she also places in solos and duos and gives her heart and soul for this. Connie has problems with her lungs so struggles with her breathing, but this never stops her following her dreams of becoming a professional dance teacher.

Sponsor: Oswestry Life Magazine Numerous nominations received

Since they launched, Oswald’s Cars have continuously supported and always offer and deliver an excellent taxi service to local schools, businesses and residents. Shaun and the team have demonstrated repeated customer service and continue to grow year on year.

Paws ws fOr Thought THE BENEFITS OF ENRICHMENT ACTIVITIES FOR YOUR PET Professional Dog Groomer in Oswestry 07970710830

Enrichment is about creating stimulating opportunities for animals, so they feel more in control of their environment, by giving them achievable challenges and CHOICES. It mimics an animal’s natural ‘wild’ existence, including hunting for food, stimulating the senses, and providing variety. Enrichment allows an animal the freedom to express natural behaviour by employing their innate instincts. This can lead to confidence boosting and contentment in your pet. While walks and running can exercise the body, it does not necessarily provide an opportunity to utilise their full range of species-specific behaviours, leaving you with a very fit pet that is filled with boredom, frustration and behaviour issues. With no outlets, think “coiled spring”

TYPES OF ENRICHMENT

Scent enrichment - LET THEM SNIFF!

Sniffing their environment, snuffle mats, scented toys, have been shown to increase focus and reduce stress related behaviours. My dogs love small treats to be scattered on the lawn or throughout the house for them to forage.

Musical enrichment

Some animals respond well to classical music which has been known to support relaxation. The steady beat of a soft drum has the same effect.

Environmental enrichment

BRINGING YOU THE VERY BEST IN RAW, APPROPRIATE FOOD FOR YOUR CARNIVOROUS ANIMALS Whether you are already a seasoned raw feeder or interested in switching your animals to a raw diet then we have everything you need and much more. As well as our large range of top quality raw minces, chunks and bones we also supply air dried chews and natural treats as well as herbal supplements to complement a natural diet.

SOME OF THE BENEFITS OF RAW FEEDING: Less Sensitivities ■ Great for allergy sufferers ■ Smaller less odorous poop ■ Clean teeth & breath ■ Shiny healthy coat ■

Environmental enrichment involving walks to the park and playing can increase activity levels, encourage exploratory behaviour, and reduce unwanted behaviours. Providing different textured surfaces to walk on, e.g. bubble wrap, bathmat and other FREEWORK activities can boost confidence in dogs and cats. Rabbits can benefit from digging activities.

Feeding enrichment

Dogs are less likely to get bored with activities that involve chewing or feeding e.g. puzzle feeders or toys filed with food, foraging, hide and seek activities.

Cognitive/behavioural enrichment

Problem-solving tasks, puzzles and memory tasks involves mental stimulation. This type of enrichment can help pets feel calmer and less stressed and can improve overall behaviour. Cognitive enrichment may also slow age-related cognitive decline in dogs. Rebecca Evans of Knowing Noses Botanical Self-healing for Animals info@knowingnoses.com

BOOK REVIEW EDITOR’S CHOICE

The Stolen Valley BY R.J. TURNER

OF THE MONTH

NYAD (15) AVAILABLE TO STREAM ON NETFLIX The odd-looking title might not draw you in, but this brilliant film based on the true-life story of American swimmer Diana Nyad has won plaudits all round, and this year’s Oscars sees both leads nominated for their roles. Diana Nyad isn’t an athlete most of us will be familiar with, she’s a long-distance swimmer who in 2013, attempted a 110-mile swim from Cuba to Florida. It’s this feat which forms the backbone of the film. Nyad, played by Annette Benning, is a prickly and demanding athlete, not especially likeable much of the time. She enlists the help of her ex-partner and best friend, Bonnie (Jodie Foster), to be her coach. Rhys Ifans joins the team as the skipper of her support boat and the scene is set for a familiar tale of ‘woman against nature’ heroics, and what heroics they are. Although the film follows a predictable path much of the time, the practicalities of swimming for two days straight are examined in detail and it’s this that means we avoid many of the usual sporting film cliches. Most of us will have no idea about shark cages, navigation streamers, mid swim rest breaks and pep talks, and rather than the mechanics of the swim being boring, they add a great counterpoint to the film’s representations of Nyad’s mental state. Both Benning and Foster are great, and it’s rare to see a ‘sporting’ drama with women in the main roles. Less blood sweat and tears, more chafing rash, exhaustion and jellyfish suits. ‘NYAD’ shines a light on an achievement most of us will be unaware of, and the incredible person who made it happen. By Michael Hudson 24

We love to hold up local authors when we can and here we have a great story. Based in 1889 around Llanwddyn (some 30 miles from Oswestry), the Vrynwy dam is almost complete and the village in the valley will soon be drowned under the waters of a vast lake. Following a long drought, there is a fierce storm and water begins to rush into the valley. Will two Welshmen, a doctor and his son and John Noble and his daughter cross paths as they visit the area with their own motives for being there? R.J. Turner has previously published two crime novels and this story doesn’t disappoint with its history. If you love a locally based story, then this is for you. Available from Amazon at £6.50

POETRY

To a Child in Aleppo BY JAN HEDGER www.janscreativewriting.co.uk I want to gift you a garden of weeping willows to cry tears for you, and nourish the dry earth. Where at sunrise, a rainbow of balloons float in gentle touchdown, of softness and peace; a rope swing looped over a twisted fig tree flies you through the brushing air. Higher and higher you travel to other worlds beyond your own. White doves with whispering wings in a clear blue sky, will come to your hand. And at night; it is only the fireflies that flash-dance, as I gift you a coverlet of angel down and a pillow cloud. And I will send you guardians of stars, as your night watchmen.

Food & Drink

Garlic & Tarragon Chicken This vibrant and succulent chicken dish is seasoned to perfection with garlic sea salt and the delicate spiciness of fresh tarragon. Serves 4 | Preparation time 20 minutes | Cooking time 20 minutes

METHOD

INGREDIENTS

2 tbsp olive oil • 4 x chicken legs, skin on • 6 cloves garlic, peeled and left whole • 2 tbsp unsalted butter • 2 tbsp plain flour • 500ml chicken stock • 1 tsp wholegrain mustard • Juice and zest of half a lemon • 200ml double cream • A good pinch of Maldon Garlic Sea Salt • Cracked black pepper • A handful of fresh tarragon, leaves picked and roughly chopped To serve: Creamy mashed potato and green beans

1. Heat the oil in a large, shallow cast-iron pan and add the chicken legs, skin-side down. Cook on medium heat until the skin turns golden brown and crispy. When the skin is crispy, turn the legs over and cook on the flesh side until it has browned. 2. When the chicken legs are browned all over, remove them from the pan and set aside. Turn the heat down, add the garlic cloves and cook until soft and caramelised. Remove from the pan and set aside with the chicken. 3. Add the butter to the pan and melt gently. When the butter is foaming, add the flour and mix it in quickly with a wooden spoon. Cook the flour for a couple of minutes until it is golden and smelling biscuity. Then add the stock, a ladleful at a time, whisking in each addition to make sure there are no lumps. Allow the sauce to thicken each time before adding the next ladleful. 4. Once all the stock has been added allow the sauce to bubble and thicken. Then add the mustard, lemon juice, lemon zest and double cream. Stir and add the Maldon Garlic Sea Salt and some cracked black pepper. 5. Place the chicken legs back into the sauce along with the garlic cloves, place the lid on the pan and gently simmer this at a very low temperature for approximately 10 minutes, or until the chicken legs are cooked through. The sauce should be glossy and creamy, but if it needs loosening add a splash of water or stock. 6. Finally sprinkle over the tarragon and then serve with creamy mashed potato and greens.

Education

Putting your children first Choosing a primary school for your child is never an easy task, but walking through the bright and inviting corridors of Holy Trinity Church of England Primary Academy you get a sense of belonging and excitement. At every turn are paintings depicting key events in history and the children’s work. A child’s journey at Holy Trinity begins in the vibrant nursery setting where caring and highly trained staff welcome them into the family. Routines are established quickly to support children, giving them a robust start to their education and continuing throughout their time here. The academy has gone from strength to strength in recent months, culminating in receiving a good at the most recent Ofsted inspection in November 2023, with inspectors noting ‘children love coming to Holy Trinity’. As a Church of England Academy, the community feel is palpable amongst the children, across classes and the parents and wider community. The academy encourages pupils and children who have gone above and beyond in their community are awarded a gold cross badge. This feeds into the school’s core value of Hope and underpins

our motto, ‘Hope for ourselves, others and our world’. Children are regularly given opportunities to ‘give’ back to their community - singing at Christmas light switch-on events and litter picking. Most recently, the new Executive Principal, Laura Hopley, took up post with a renewed drive to be a flagship school within the local area. Health with Dr Paul Middleton

The Doctor said you had a rupture, not a rapture! Anon You might not realise but sometimes you are speaking Latin! Even after 2000 years many words persist: hernia is one of them – it is Latin for rupture. If you are over 50 years old then the odds are that you have one too. A hernia is where the contents of one body area find a way out and move into another area. The two most common are inguinal and hiatus hernias. The first gives you a lump in the groin area, the second may not give you any symptoms at all but if a bit of your stomach decides to move into your chest, then you may get heartburn or indigestion. When I first qualified hiatus hernia surgery was not uncommon, now medication controls most people’s symptoms well. A lump in the groin, particularly if it comes and goes or can be pushed back (or reduced in medical language) is usually an inguinal hernia. 90% occur in men. Women do get them too but these are quite rare

and can occur in a slightly lower position: the femoral hernia. Why do they matter? Well, they can get stuck, or incarcerate, and they can throttle their contents, or strangulate. If a hernia gives sudden, worsening pain, goes red or is associated with abdominal symptoms (constipation, colicky pain, bloating or vomiting) then that is an emergency. Hernias do not always need immediate surgery but can worsen over time and surgery is relatively atraumatic. If we’re being technical there are two sorts of inguinal hernia. In my Finals exam I was asked how to tell the difference by our professor of surgery. That same week there had been a publication showing consultants were no better than chance at trying to do just this. Did I play the smart alec and tell him it was a stupid question? Or just spout the textbook answer he wanted? I’ll leave you to guess!

STAY SAFE ONLINE - REPORTING FAKE ADS ON FACEBOOK AND INSTAGRAM The new Online Safety Act became law in October 2023; under the new legislation, online platforms such as Facebook, Google and Instagram are legally obliged to remove harmful content - including scams. To report fraudulent content on Facebook or Instagram, select the three dots and click ‘report’. Which? has used this new legislation to report a series of dubious ads posted by ‘UK Theory test driver’s license DVLA’ claiming to offer a ‘registered driving license’ without a test in ‘just a few working days’. Note the spelling ‘license’ which is the American spelling for the noun – a clue that this is not a real DVLA UK driving licence! When Which? contacted the Facebook page behind the advert, they replied: ‘To clarify, our full license package includes both the theory and practical test certificates. There are no exams or tests required. Once we update your information in the DVLA system, your license or permit will be sent to your

address within 4 to 5 days. Our licenses are registered and checked by the DVLA system, ensuring their authenticity. And it will cost £600.’ Other advertisers also claimed they could remove licence bans and points. Which? reported the ads to Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, who said: ‘We do not allow fraudulent activity on our platforms, including the selling of forged documents. When we identify this kind of activity, we take action – removing content and as with this case, disabling accounts as necessary.’ The DVLA (Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency) issues driving licences. The DVSA (Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency) is responsible for booking driving tests. https://www. gov.uk/book-driving-test If you are nearly 70, you should receive a D46P application form through the post and be able to renew your licence for free. Vital support for those living with ME in Shropshire A group providing support for those living with ME in Shropshire is continuing to raise awareness of the condition to ensure people don’t have to suffer alone. Shropshire ME has teamed up with Lanyon Bowdler Solicitors as one of the firm’s charities of the year, and Paula Poole, of the charity, says the support would help progress some ambitious plans in the coming year. She says: “ME has a long and complicated name Myalgic Encephalomyelitis - but most people will know it as chronic fatigue syndrome. “One of the main symptoms is absolute fatigue, both physically and mentally, but one of the problems for people who suffer - and their carers, whom we also help - is that it’s sort of invisible to other people. “We provide support in a range of ways. We have monthly peer support groups, basically friendship groups, where people can meet to exchange ideas, chat and ask questions in a safe space. “A key ambition is to contact every doctor’s surgery in Shropshire to ask them that when they give a diagnosis of ME or Long Covid, they routinely refer patients to our charity.

Paula Poole (above) chats to Trudy Smith (left).

“We also want to contact schools because if children are diagnosed quickly their outcomes are generally much better.” Paula chats with Trudy Smith, of Lanyon Bowdler, in a recent edition of the firm’s Legal Lounge podcast, about what it’s like to live with ME and how the charity can provide support. Trudy says: “When I first started feeling the symptoms of ME, I went to my GP and they were quite dismissive of how I was feeling. It actually took me four years to get a diagnosis. “Had a group such as Shropshire ME been available back then, providing someone to talk to and offering the support I needed, it would have been very beneficial.” To listen to the podcast, search for The Legal Lounge on any podcast app, or visit www.lblaw.co.uk/podcast.

This pretty mix of pastels includes darker and lighter shades of blue, as well as natural and metallic contrasts. Sam three-seater lounger in linen-look Tranquil Dawn, £849, DFS.

Pale and Pretty This year, everyone’s talking about Pantone’s colour of the year, Peach Fuzz. Sitting somewhere between peach and orange, it’s a contemporary colour described as “a warm and cosy shade highlighting our desire for togetherness with others or for enjoying a moment of stillness and the feeling of sanctuary.” According to Pantone, introducing this soft, romantic shade into an interior creates a welcoming ambience. It can be introduced in many forms, from entire rooms to wall tiles, bed linen or small, decorative accessories. It works well with warm off-whites and beiges, touches of pale teal and soft green, fuchsia pink (in small doses), and dark grey. It’s a great partner to textural naturals such as timber, rattan, sisal, cork and stone. Another option is to introduce a mix of two or more pastels – ice-cream shades that include mint green, lemon yellow, duck-egg blue, lilac and blush pink – creating a gentle harmony that feels both tranquil and energising. It could be a series of cushions in various delicate shades or an entire bathroom sourced in differing pastel tones. The result is a look that has a touch of retro style, reminding us of the 1950s, yet still very modern. One way to anchor your scheme in a sophisticated 58

| Oswestry life

way is to employ some darker and lighter accents. The strong tonal contrast with the pastels can add depth and interest, for example, using white as a base room colour with a series of added coordinating pastels, plus the occasional dash of a stronger colour. To deliver this successfully, create a mood board. This could be a piece of white cardboard or a screen version using a design app, but the result is the same: pulling together all the elements of the room, using a curated selection of fabric and wallpaper samples, paint swatches and images of furnishings and accessories, helping you to visualise how everything will work together. Consider the visual weight of the colours and try to create an overall sense of balance, and the effect of natural light – will your pastels look vibrant or washed out? Paint small pieces of white paper with your chosen colours and pin them up on all the walls, checking how they appear at different times of day and under artificial light. Decorating with pastels is worth the effort. From peach to lavender, mint to lemon, these gorgeous colours can make an interesting, refreshing and playful addition to any interior, transforming your space into a home that is inviting, distinctive and timelessly appealing.

Combining functionality with effortless style has been the overriding appeal of a mid-century style. This Moody take focuses on the dark side of the aesthetic. Think that 70’s basement with Mad Men sophistication, somewhere a James Bond villain would retreat to after a full day of scheming. Dark teak woods, leathers, velvets, cut glass, vintage table lamps and rich deep colours in the accessories create a sultry haven for anyone who loves dark and dramatic interior spaces.

Gardening

March in the garden by Graham Mitchell The snowdrops and crocuses have been teasing us for a while, but now March is here we can start to wake up the garden and get ready for the new season. Before most plants start to leaf up, it is a good time to get sheds and fences painted with preservative. Avoid those old tins of creosote at the back of the shed. Did you know that creosote is illegal nowadays? As the daffodils finish, trim the seed-heads but don’t cut back the foliage. Perennial and alpine beds can do with another tidy-up, removing dead leaves and debris, letting air get to the plants and removing slug and snail havens. Time for some sowing now. Read the packet instructions carefully. It is too early for hardy annuals outside, but you can start them off indoors to give yourself a head start, especially with slow germinating and growing plants. An electric propagator really helps with germination, even more now that many people don’t have airing cupboards. A sunny windowsill is a good second best. I’ll be sowing my tomatoes, chillies, aubergines, and peppers now, and then keeping indoors

Still a chance of snow

before transferring to an unheated greenhouse in May. The garden and allotment have suffered this winter with the high winds, and everything has become so muddy too. The shrubs and climbers need to be sorted out, especially the climbing roses. Without care they can become a mess with few flowers. Cut back any diseased or damaged branches and remove any tangle of congested shoots. Healthy new shoots should be cut back by about a third to encourage branching and tied in to the framework. If you give the lawn a mow, keep the blades high and just remove the tips of the grass leaves. Give the lawn an early feed too and keep on top of the weeding. Little and often saves time in the long run. However, hands up, I have fallen behind this year!

Gardening

Welcome to the growing season This is a month of positivity for just about everyone, not just gardening folk. There might be winds that feel gusty enough to blow off your gardening boots or perhaps there will be sunshine to fix the widest of smiles firmly in place for a month of scurrying and secateurs. Whatever the weather, get outside and enjoy the arrival of spring.

The kitchen garden

If you’re lucky enough to have a greenhouse, you can sow seeds such as tomatoes, aubergines, cucumbers, gherkins, sweet peppers and celeriac. Some will need the encouragement of a propagator. Sowing seeds early means that some won’t make it, particularly if there is a cold snap. But it’s worth

keeping an eye on weather forecasts and giving them extra protection when required. Your crops will be bountiful this season if you can get a head start. The soil in the allotment garden can be prepared by removing weeds and covering it with some sort of matting, which will not only stop more weeds from growing but will also warm the soil. From mid-March onwards, vegetables such as summer cabbage, Brussels sprouts, leeks, onions, carrots, broad beans, spring onion and beetroot can be sown outdoors under a cloche. Perennial herbs including rosemary, oregano, sage and thyme can also be sown under cover. You might already have chitted (or sprouted) early seed potatoes as this can commence from late January onwards, depending on where you live. Potatoes need up to six weeks of chitting before planting when soil temperatures are around eight degrees, so some might be ready to go into the ground during March. Potatoes probably won’t do well if they are planted in cold or waterlogged soil, so it’s best to wait until temperatures rise. Don’t forget that you can plant them into bags rather than the ground if space is at a premium. This also allows you to move the bags into a warmer and drier space during inclement weather. Consider adding your homemade compost to borders to act as a mulch. Remove weeds first, but take care not to trample the soil as this will squeeze away valuable air. Laying a board on the surface helps to distribute your weight evenly. This month is all about preparing the soil to create the best conditions for root health for trees, shrubs, perennials and edible plants. Spring is in the air and our hearts can start to sing.

You feed the family, we’ll feed the lawn We provide a premium lawn care experience. We seed them, feed them, even control the weeds. So, you don’t have to. For a FREE lawn analysis visit greenthumb.co.uk or contact our local team. Oswestry branch Call 01691 655111

STEPS TO TAKE BEFORE THE TAX YEAR ENDS

BOOST YOUR SAVINGS Tax relief advice made simple

CRAIG ROBERTS Oswestry-based independent financial adviser

With just over a month to go before the end of the tax year, it’s time to check you’ve made the most of your annual relief allowances. From ISAs and pensions to inheritance tax and capital gains, there are a number of ways to potentially save money. And, with the amount you can claim set to drop again in 2024/25, it’s important to act now. Here, Craig Roberts, independent financial adviser and director of Belgrave Wincham, shares a simple checklist ahead of 5 April: •

If you have an ISA, make sure you’ve used all of your tax-free saving allowance. At the moment, this stands at £20,000 per person for the tax year 2023/24. This simple strategy can be shared across both cash ISAs and stocks and shares ISAs too.

You could receive tax relief by contributing to a pension – the annual allowance is up to £60,000, dependent on your income. It’s also possible to carry forward unused allowances from the past three years, so well worth checking you’re utilising this.

For those with children, consider opening a Junior ISA (JISA). The annual allowance for a JISA this tax year is £9,000 and, as with an adult ISA, any gains on money made are free of UK income tax and capital gains tax.

If you’re planning to sell any of your assets, now could be the time to do so. Currently, the annual allowance for capital gains tax stands at £6,000 – already less than half of what it was last year – and it’s set to reduce again in the next tax year.

Think about making financial gifts to family and friends. Each year there is a £3,000 annual exemption allowance which can be used to help reduce your inheritance tax. Check other exemptions, such as tax-free wedding gifts of up to £5,000 to your children, too.

Q&A

with GHP Legal’s Kellie Lewis

www.ghplegal.com

Client Care letter queries regarding ID requirements Q: I have some questions about a request I received in a Client Care Letter to provide ID. Firstly, I have been asked to provide photographic identification, but as I have never owned a passport and I only have the old-style paper driving licence, what am I supposed to do? Secondly, I have provided ID previously which I know is still on file, so I don’t understand why the original ID is no longer acceptable? I now live nearly a hundred miles away, so presenting anything in person to prove who I am is difficult. A: When photographic identification is required, it needs to be provided with something that shows your signature. This is why a passport or driving licence are ideal. However, it is possible to accept a bus pass as photographic identification, along with a copy of the back and front of a bank card which will confirm your signature. Alternatively, there is a form called an ID1 which your solicitor can complete as a certificate of identity. To accompany the ID1 you will need to provide two types of proof of residency, together with a passport sized photograph such as you can obtain in a shopping centre booth. In respect of your ID having been previously provided and retained on file, this could still be acceptable provided you are still living at the same address. However, as you have indicated that you have moved home since providing ID, you would need to provide an up-to-date proof of residency that is no more than three months old. This could be a bank statement or utilities bill. If you are unable to take this in person to the office requesting it, a local firm of solicitors would be able to take certified copies for you that you can then send on.
