Countdown to Derwen Fete and Dog Show –14 June 2025
Derwen College is gearing up for a day of fun, excitement, and community spirit with its annual Fete and Dog Show. This year, the College is combining these two beloved events into a one-day event on Saturday, 14 June.
Located in Gobowen, near Oswestry, Derwen College invites everyone to join in for a family fun day that promises something for everyone. From 10am to 4pm, the campus will be buzzing with activities and entertainment for all ages.
The dog show will delight attendees with categories for every pooch, whether they are the most handsome, have the waggiest tail, or are super clever. Entry for the dog show is just £3 per category, so bring along your best buddy and join the fun!
There’s a grand raffle with amazing prizes, including a two-night glamping retreat courtesy of Woodland Park Lodges in Ellesmere, shopping and experience vouchers, wine hampers, signed memorabilia, and much more. Then, the ever-popular Duck Race is back, allowing individuals and sponsoring businesses to pick their ducks and cheer them on as they race down the stream to the finish line.
New for 2025, the fete launches village show-style arts and crafts competitions, which will be held in the College’s large Reception area. Catering to all ages, children’s categories include vegetable animals and garden in a tray. Other arts and crafts competitions include themed photography, cooking, and crochet. Entry for these competitions is £2.
Visitors can explore the award-winning Marketplace, where they can shop and dine at the Garden Centre and Gift Shop, Vintage Advantage Charity Shop and Walled Garden Café. The Orangery Restaurant will be open for traditional cream teas.
Local sellers will showcase a fabulous range of goods, from artisanal delights to handcrafted ornaments. Additionally, there will be a bouncy castle, Derwen-made ice creams, a barbecue, bar picnic area, tombola, and games.
Megan Charman, Community Fundraiser and Events Coordinator at Derwen College, said, “The Fete and Dog Show is our biggest fundraiser of the year, with all proceeds from the event going to Derwen Charity. By joining the festivities, attendees will be contributing to the fantastic work the College does to improve the lives and education of students and clients with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).”

Oswestry Community Action (Qube) calls for volunteers
Oswestry Community Action (Qube) based in Oswestry is on the lookout for more volunteers. The services Oswestry Community Action offer have been developed in response to the needs of the local community and ultimately aim to keep them engaged and support inclusivity and wellbeing. The majority of their services are aimed at those who are disadvantaged which includes disability, health (including mental health), unemployment, rural poverty and isolation.
Their Community Transport service is essential for enabling people in the community to get out and about with ease and makes a huge difference in their lives. TG Concrete Expands Oswestry Site
TG Concrete, part of the family-owned Tudor Griffiths Group, is proud to announce the expansion of its Oswestry site with the installation of a new 100 tonne silo. • High thermal conductivity – ideal for underfloor heating systems
• Rapid drying times – enabling quicker progression to the next stage of the build
• Self-compacting and crack-resistant – reducing labour and site time

Milestone anniversaries for Oswestry law firm
An Oswestry solicitor is celebrating 40 years as an equity partner at the same time as the firm he now heads up celebrates its 55th year.
Richard Lloyd is the current Senior Partner of GHP Legal. His legal career began in 1980 when he accepted a trainee position at a firm of solicitors in Aberystwyth. In early 1983 he joined AW Brown & Co in Oswestry as an assistant solicitor and two years later became an equity partner with Alan Brown.
The firm of AW Brown was renamed AW Brown & Lloyd, and when founder Alan Brown became a fulltime judge in 1991, Richard became Senior Partner. In 2000, Brown & Lloyd merged with Gwilym Hughes & Partners (established in 1970) and that firm later became what is now known as GHP Legal.
Reflecting on how things have changed during his career, Richard said, “I started off my career working in general legal practice, which included a great deal of criminal and civil litigation together with non-contentious work. Then, as a firm, we began recruiting specialists, and I believe that specialism is responsible for our growth and our continuing success.
“My aim throughout my career has been to do the very best I can for my clients. Over the years many of my clients have indeed become good friends. I am very pleased to be in partnership with my current partners, but it’s somewhat sobering to think that four of them were not even born when I first became an equity partner!”

Oswestry Bounds into Summer!
As the summer months arrive, Oswestry’s town centre streets are buzzing with fresh floral colours as we look forward to a packed calendar featuring some exciting and spectacular family events.
Spring has been a busy time for Oswestry BID (Business Improvement District), so here’s a brief update on some of our recent activities and projects aimed at making Oswestry a better place to live, work, enjoy and do business.
Street Rangers Funding Secured
In April, we had the pleasure of welcoming Assistant PCC (Police and Crime Commissioner), Steve Mackay, to Oswestry, after it was announced that funding for our Street Rangers had been secured for the next two years.
Oswestry BID Manager, Adele Nightingale, said, “This funding allows us to build on the excellent work done to date and continuing to support West Mercia Police in reducing antisocial behaviour and shoplifting. The presence of Street Rangers in our town centre has made a real positive impact, actively working with our local Police, businesses and residents. The feedback has been extremely positive, and we are delighted that the PCC has recognised the importance of our project and its progression.”
Brightening Up the Town
Now, as the tourism season starts to ramp up, we naturally focus on delivering projects that enhance the town centre’s appearance and appeal. Among the most noticeable of these are the new bunting installations in bright pastel shades, fluttering gently above Oswestry’s shopping areas.
Our street planters too have received expert care and attention from the green-fingered, cheerful volunteers of Oswestry in Bloom. BID are pleased to support their work, and the stunning enhancement and greening of the high street they provide. With town centre safety and atmosphere in mind, the BID have had the Festoon Lighting installed once again, helping to make evenings in the town feel warmer, safer, and more inviting for the night-time economy. These strings of ambient lights have brightened up several key streets, improving visibility while adding a reassurance and charm to the evening.
Spectacular Community Events
We’re proud to bring some exciting events to Oswestry. In early spring, the Street Circus rolled into town on the Bailey Head, wowing crowds with acrobatics, juggling, and family-friendly fun. Then, just weeks later, Festival Square will (weather permitting) be transformed again, into a wonderful urban beach, complete with deck chairs, golden sand, and the sounds of seagulls and sea - offering families a taste of the seaside without leaving Shropshire! Both events are designed to bring smiles to faces young and old, while delivering a welcome boost to footfall for local businesses.
And the events continued with BID also proudly supporting this June’s Oswestry Community Games, celebrating local sports, health, and
wellbeing in an inclusive, actionpacked event. Families and young people having the chance to try out new activities, connect with local sports clubs, and enjoy a sense of togetherness that Oswestry continues to be known for. A fantastic reminder of the importance of shared spaces, active living, and collaboration between community organisations and businesses.
Coming Soon...
This July, on the weekend of 5th and 6th, Oswestry plays host to the ever-popular Oswestry Food & Drink Festival, the streets will be lined with stalls brimming with culinary delights - from artisan cheeses and local ciders to exotic spices and sweet treats. It’s a celebration of local producers, makers, and all things delicious - the perfect excuse to spend a day grazing your way through Oswestry’s tastiest offerings.
Then in August, on the weekend of 16th and 17th, our eyes turn to the skies for the return of the Oswestry Balloon Carnival, one of the town’s most spectacular annual events. Organised in association with Nightingale House Hospice, Oswestry Town Council, and Oswestry BID, and beloved by locals and visitors alike, the carnival promises a weekend of breathtaking balloon displays, live entertainment, and family fun in Cae Glas Park - a highlight of the calendar. There’s never been a better time to explore, support, and celebrate your town!

Closing the ‘Shropshire Gap’ at a rate of knots
In glorious sunshine in early April, a throng gathered on the Montgomery Canal at Crickheath Wharf, near Oswestry to attend a ‘Topping Out’ ceremony to celebrate the rewatering of yet another section of the canal and it means that the Shropshire Gap - the unrestored section of the canal between Crickheath and the Welsh border at Llanymynech - has been closed by a further 10%.
Tom Fulda, restoration project manager for the Shropshire Union Canal Society, thanked all the parties that made it possible saying, “Thanks to the funders, Shropshire Council, Canal & River Trust. The volunteers, including those from the Dry Stone Walling Association who helped so much with the wharf wall and a lot of local support too, the Parish Councils and local businesses: there’s Tudor Griffiths, Monty’s Brewery and Henstone Distillery and of course, a multitude of local residents, towpath walkers, and boaters who have expressed their gratitude, support –and encouraged us along the way.”
Over this period of restoration there have been 67 Society volunteers involved at different times, 23 of
which have joined the Society since the start of the project last year. All but one of these are from the local area around Shropshire, Cheshire and Powys with the exception having travelled from Australia to attend, thereby demonstrating the global following of canal restoration! There were also 50 corporate volunteers from Practice Plan in Oswestry, from Openreach, consulting engineers Arcadis and RSK, and several from Canal & River Trust have each offered a day of their time. In total, over the 15 works parties, the works have been delivered by 6,500 volunteer hours.
Tom went on to say, “The speed of restoration has really increased as the momentum, expertise, and funding have kept us moving forward - firstly to Schoolhouse Bridge - and then on to the Welsh border at Llanymynech. The section that was opened in 2023 from Redwith Bridge to Crickheath Basin was fraught with natural challenges such as a peat bog near Lloyds Feeds and many different strata popping up all over the place, but the result is quite magnificent and it’s wonderful to see narrowboats
regularly visiting. The next section looks more straightforward from a groundwork point of view, but it has its own challenges – badgers, water tests and the construction of wash-walls at Schoolhouse – so this will keep us busy as we plan for the next major task – the large winding hole at Waen Wen, in Pant. Luckily, we have a great team of volunteers, we provide free tea and cake, some very experienced experts, Canal & River Trust guidance and lots of local support, so it’s back in the cut and onwards to the border for us!”
But what’s a ‘Topping Out’ ceremony? (Sometimes called Topping Off, in the building trade) Well, it’s a tradition that started in Scandinavia in the dark ages, nearly 2,000 years ago and is a symbolic gesture that acknowledges the hard work, dedication and skill of all involved in the completion of the construction. There will be many more of these ceremonies on the Monty in the years to come and, if you’d like to be involved in the next one – have a look online. If you’d like to be part of this great endeavour, please visit www.shropshireunion.org.uk

New Trophy Unveiled for The Tallie Brazier Cup
The highly anticipated Tallie Brazier Cup has unveiled a stunning new trophy, created by the esteemed British Iron Works Centre. The tournament, which aims to raise vital funds for The Sea Watch Foundation, will now feature this magnificent trophy as its ultimate prize.
The Tallie Brazier Cup is a celebration of football, community spirit, and environmental conservation. With all proceeds going towards The Sea Watch Foundation, the event highlights the importance of marine conservation while bringing together teams and supporters for an exciting competition. The funds
raised will support others who share Tallie Brazier’s deep passion for marine life, ensuring that her legacy lives on through meaningful conservation efforts.
This tournament is a showcase for women’s football and will be held at Park Hall Stadium, where Tallie played for TNS, on 29 June. As well as the adult’s tournament, the tournament will be expanding this year to include a youth for Under-13 girls’ teams, encouraging the next generation of female footballers to take part and compete.
The tournament’s new trophy is a true work of art, expertly designed and crafted by Clive and his dedicated team at the British Iron Works Centre, where Tallie once worked making it even more special to Tallie’s friends and families. Their commitment to excellence and creativity has resulted in a trophy that embodies Tallie’s passion for dolphins in the most spectacular way.
“We are incredibly grateful to Clive and his team for their outstanding craftsmanship and generosity in bringing this vision to life,” said Adele and Ian. “The trophy is a symbol of determination, teamwork, and the collective effort to protect our marine life.”
The Tallie Brazier Cup promises to be a fantastic family event, drawing football fans and conservation advocates alike. With the new trophy as a centrepiece, the competition will not only celebrate sporting excellence but also raise awareness and funds for the vital work of The Sea Watch Foundation.

We are a family-run business based in Shropshire, who specialise in the manufacture and distribution of rock and roll beds for campervans. We also supply Swivel King swivel seats and offer premium quality automotive upholstery services, all designed to help you get the most out of your campervan.
From Family Passion to a National Brand
Vulcan Rock’N’Roll Beds is a name that’s become trusted by van enthusiasts all over the UK, but their journey started much closer to home, right here in Oswestry. Originally founded as a small family-run business, Vulcan Beds was born from a passion for craftsmanship, and innovative ideas that would change the campervan industry.
What began with a simple idea to build safer, more comfortable rock’n’roll beds for campervans — quickly grew into a thriving operation, built on hard work, dedication, and a genuine love for what they do.
Today, they are proud to manufacture and distribute their products across the UK, providing high-quality Rock’N’Roll Beds and Swivel Bases to individuals, conversion companies, and van builders nationwide. Even as they grow, they remain true to the values that set them apart from the beginning: personal service, exceptional craftsmanship, and products they would be proud to use themselves.
Every Vulcan bed is made by hand at their
manufacturing facility, using high-grade steel and carefully sourced materials. Safety and quality are at the heart of every product, so their M1 tested beds and Swivel Bases are designed to meet the highest safety standards, giving customers peace of mind.
Vulcan Rock’N’Roll Beds know that comfort matters just as much as your safety, which is why their beds are designed to be easy to use, durable, and exceptionally comfortable. With smooth operation and sturdy construction, a Vulcan bed is the finishing touch that completes any van or campervan conversion, combining practicality with lasting comfort.
They offer a wide range of customisation options, from bespoke upholstery to different bed sizes and other products and their team works closely with every customer to make sure they get exactly what they need.
While Vulcan’s reach has expanded, their commitment to personal, friendly service has never changed. As a family business at heart, they treat every project with care and attention to detail. Whether you’re upgrading a weekend van or building a full-time campervan, they are here to help every step of the way.
If you’re planning a van build or thinking about upgrading your camper, visit the showroom by appointment only to explore the range of products, customisation options and see the quality first hand. See our customer reviews at www.vulcanbeds.co.uk.
You can also follow using @vulcanbeds on Facebook, Instagram and TikTok to see their latest work and get inspired.

The results of the 1st May elections are now known, and details of your councillors can be found on our website and will be detailed in our annual report which will be published soon. Being a councillor is an important public service and councillors make decisions about local issues and improve the quality of life for people within the town. You will be pleased to know, that the next column will be from your new Mayor and we’re sure they will receive a warm welcome from you all as they perform their civic duties.
In a bid to boost biodiversity, we are supporting ‘No Mow May 2025’ by leaving swathes of grass in Cae Glas Park, Brogyntyn Park, Castle Bank and Oswestry Cemetery uncut to help bees and butterflies. The annual campaign by conservation charity Plantlife highlights how long grass benefits wildlife, tackles pollution, reduces heat extremes and locks away carbon below ground. We hope this will be well received but we would be very grateful if you can let us know how you feel about the initiative – your feedback is important.
Our diesel vehicle has been replaced with an electric van – perfect for the short journeys our team do and part of our commitment to reduce our carbon footprint and to reduce emissions. We will soon be upgrading all of the town council streetlights to LED –they will be more energy efficient and hopefully reduce the number of repairs needed.
We would like to thank those schools and community members who helped us plant hedgerows in Brogyntyn park – the dry weather made it a difficult task – thank you.
Finally, we are keen to keep you updated on our services and our projects, we publish a bi-monthly newsletter which is available at our offices, but we will shortly be offering you an opportunity to sign up to have the newsletter sent directly to your inbox.

Celebrating 75 years of Walford College!
Realising Potential and Supporting Success
Walford College welcomed its first students in 1949, when the College was known as Shropshire Farm Institute. There’s a lot that has changed since then.
But not everything… For 75 years, Walford College has proudly been a place where students can thrive, have their aspirations nurtured, and often make lifelong friends. All on our beautiful campus, nestled in the heart of the Shropshire countryside.
Today, Walford College is a modern and dynamic land-based College equipped with specialist resources. From our working commercial farm and equine centre to our specialist animal collection and large motor vehicle workshops, we ensure our students learn in realistic environments using industry-standard equipment. Whilst our facilities have certainly advanced in 75 years, our commitment to hands-on learning, community, and industry-focused education remains the same.
As highlighted by our OFSTED inspections, our modern-day students are well prepared for their next steps, have a broader understanding of their industries and workplaces and go on to develop meaningful relationships with employers. All whilst demonstrating OUTSTANDING attitudes and behaviours. We are proud to be an OFSTED Good Provider.
Our teaching staff at Walford College feel it is essential to go above and beyond to improve the student experience. We have outstanding achievement rates across our programmes and the majority of our students receive offers from their first-choice University or progress into industry or further education.
We also support foundation level learners and have access to greenhouses, ponds and woodland to help them gain the knowledge, skills and behaviours required for industry and life.
For students who live further afield or for those who would prefer to experience education whilst living away from home, our friendly, well-equipped residential accommodation offers a supportive and enriching environment.
Our staff and programmes recognise that inspiration often happens outside the classroom. That’s why our enrichment programme includes industry trips, guest speakers and experiences that engage students in the wider industry and help to develop confidence and resilience. Our recent trips have included Dudley Zoo, Greece and even Thailand!
As we celebrate our 75th anniversary, we look ahead with pride and purpose. The future of our food, farming, animal care, leisure and transport industries all depend on our students. We’re committed to providing a safe and inspiring learning environment where they can develop into skills, adaptable and innovative individuals, ready to succeed in a career they love.

Yes, pets can experience heat stroke, sunburn and dehydration just like their human guardians. PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE!
HEAT STROKE and OVERHEATING
This can be fatal! Dogs regulate their body temperature through panting, and sweat glands in their paws. Flat faced breeds, like Pugs, elderly dogs, puppies and those with existing health conditions are at higher risk.
Symptoms:
Excessive panting or thirst
Increased salivation
Bright or dark red tongue or gums
Rapid pulse
Staggering
Collapse
Immediate action:
1. Get Pet in the Shade
2. Apply Cool Water to inner thighs and stomach where there are more large blood vessels, and on the paw pads. Use running water.
3. Circulate Air. Ensure the water you’re applying can evaporate. Don’t cover pet with a wet towel or blanket as this creates a sauna effect.
4. Keep Pet Moving Slowly to circulate cooled blood throughout the body.
5. Offer Small Amounts of Cool (Not Cold) Water

56, Oswestry
56 is an intimate wine bar, small in area but big in personality. Situated on the corner of Leg Street, you will be greeted with a warm welcome, shown to your seats and you can then relax and start by enjoying one of the many wines, beers and spirits available.
Early December ’24, many people in Oswestry were sad to see that 56 would be closing its doors, however for Amie and Rod there was only one solution, buy the business and keep it going! Having been regulars at 56, they knew that it would be a loss to the town, so with no experience they opened the doors on 10 January and hit the ground running!
Folk often say that the relaxed atmosphere at 56 is like ‘having a drink in your friends front room but with better service’. The bar seats 42 over two floors and the newly decorated room upstairs is great for groups up to 16, perfect for private parties and events. If you fancy a more intimate meal then the Naughty Corner is perfect for two!
The kitchen here is tiny and the menu isn’t huge but the food that is whipped up in that little space is delicious! Sharing boards are 56’s speciality, think Grazing Board with an abundance of cheese, meat, pate, fruits, breads and lots of other nibbly bits or a Chicken Tikka Board that was so popular as a special that it had to hit the menu full time! There are also several other options,
Serving a selection of fine wines and beers, accompanied by a selection of sharing boards.
Pop in with friends for a warm welcome, and let’s get summer started!
a SmaLL iNtimate WiNe Bar With great revieWS

Niche Patisserie Ltd: A Family Dream Rising to National Acclaim
What began as a humble home-based venture during lockdown has, in just five years, blossomed into a renowned and thriving family-run patisserie. Niche Patisserie Ltd, founded by the passionate mother-and-son duo Adam and Samantha, is now a celebrated name in artisan baking, known for its quality, creativity, and commitment to craftsmanship.
Based in the historic market town of Oswestry, Niche Patisserie’s heart beats within The Black Gate, a stunning building dating back to 1621. It’s here that Adam and his growing pastry team produce a dazzling array of artisan delights — from flaky croissants and buttery cruffins to sourdough breads and classic French pastries — all baked fresh on-site each day.
As the business celebrates its fifth anniversary, it’s clear that Niche is going from strength to strength. Wholesale now accounts for an impressive 70% of the
business, with their products reaching an ever-expanding customer base across the UK — from London to parts of Devon, and throughout Shropshire, Cheshire, and North Wales. Despite this national reach, the Oswestry bakery shop remains a cherished local institution, drawing daily queues of loyal customers.
Niche is also home to the Afternoon Tea Experience, hosted on selected Saturdays and Sundays, which has quickly gained a reputation as one of the finest in the country — even outshining high-end offerings in the London scene. Guests are treated to an elegant array of patisserie, savouries, and teas, all crafted with the same attention to detail that defines the Niche brand.
At the helm of the business is Adam, a chef and pastry specialist with a remarkable pedigree. His career includes working alongside acclaimed chef Michael Caines MBE in both Devon and North Wales. In 2019, Adam led his own team at the prestigious Pale Hall, before becoming a semi-finalist on Bake Off: The Professionals — a testament to his skill, vision, and creative flair.
Today, Adam’s passion goes beyond baking. He is committed to mentoring the next generation of pastry chefs, regularly welcoming students from surrounding counties who come to learn, train, and gain real-world experience under his guidance.
Recognition has followed naturally. Niche has received Great Taste Award acclaim for their indulgent Hazelnut Fudge, a customer favourite. Their outstanding service has also been acknowledged, with the team becoming finalists in the Shropshire Chamber of Commerce Awards and winning Customer
Care through Oswestry Life Magazine. As 2025 continues, Niche Patisserie is brimming with fresh ideas and innovation. With a strong foundation, a dedicated team, and a loyal customer base, the future looks brighter than ever for this family-run gem.
Whether it’s in the heart of Oswestry or on shelves across the country, Niche is proving that great things rise with time — and just the right touch of butter and scoops of passion.

Oswestry Community Games 2025
Cae Glas Park, Sunday 8 June 2025 11am – 4pm
Our twelfth Oswestry Community Games is in its final stages of being put together and organisers are very excited about what will now be a long weekend of activities.
On Friday night 6 June, starting at 7pm at the Memorial Hall, we are presenting an evening titled “Let’s talk” which is based on the most important subject of improving “Safeguarding and Welfare within our Clubs”. On Saturday 7 June the Memorial Hall is linking up with us to provide an open day involving the activity groups based there, covering a variety of exciting and additional activities including dance, fitness classes for young and older, games and other wellbeing groups and classes. On Sunday 8 June, we have our main day in Cae Glas Park running from 11am to 4pm. All events are free, and visitors are encouraged to take part in our “Have a go” sessions on offer. Last year’s Games involved over 30 local organisations contributing to the activities with around 1000 people of all ages taking part. Take a look on our Facebook page Oswestry Community Games and see what will be happening over the three days.
Clubs and organisations who took part in 2024 have again responded well to taking part this year and we will also have a number of new ones: Oswestry in Bloom, Hemming Boxing Academy, North Shropshire Special Olympics,
Memorial Hall, Shropshire Sailing Club based in Ellesmere, Oswestry Hockey Club and Oswestry Leisure Centre.
Our grateful thanks go to Oswestry BID, Oswestry Town Council, Perspective Finance Group, DRE Accountants, Bunning Gas, Oswestry Sports Forum and our new sponsor Oswestry Lions for their financial support which are all very much appreciated. Oswestry Life is our media partner so again many thanks to David Birch and his team for their support.
To book on “Let’s Talk”, please use our poster link, QR code or email oswestrycommunitygames@gmail.com.
James Manford – Lead Organiser said, “We are delighted that the Town Council has again given us free use of Cae Glas Park. Please note, this year we are not having our caterer so please feel free to bring your own picnic or go into town to enjoy the food on offer there. The usual ice cream and coffee caterers will of course be in attendance.
“Having three days of activities is an exciting development for us, so we do hope you will be able to support us throughout this long weekend, have a better understanding of “Safeguarding and Welfare”, support the Memorial Hall open day, and come to Cae Glas Park on the Sunday to enjoy the day out and find a new activity that you will take up and enjoy.”
Calling all Walkers!
For the second year running, the Rotary Club of Oswestry & Cambrian are organising the Oswald’s Trail Sponsored Walk event of 10 or 12.6 miles.
Come and join us on 3 August 2025 and enjoy a lovely summer walk around the hills and fields of Oswestry, enjoying beautiful views and historic points of interest.
Oswald’s Trail Circular Walk was conceived by the Oswestry Group of the Ramblers Society following their 40th anniversary in 2013 and we work together in organising the event.
The walk takes in many points of interest including the Old Oswestry Hillfort, built and occupied during the Iron Age (800 BC to AD 43) and is one of the best preserved hillforts in Britain, Brygynton Hall and grounds, previously owned by Lord Harlech, and the Old Racecourse from which
it is said you can see eight counties.
We are delighted that Our Lady and St Oswalds’ schoolchildren are once again helping us by running a school competition to design a badge which will be given to all the participants who take part.
The walk will be supporting the Movement Centre, which provides life changing children’s Targeted Training and Physiotherapy for children with Cerebral Palsy, Down Syndrome or other diagnoses to achieve new skills, through increased strength and control of their movements. The Movement Centre Charity, based
locally, is a charitable organisation based at the RJAH, and children can be referred from all over the country.
Last year the walkers taking part raised the great amount of £1500 for the charity. So please join us for another great day out and help this wonderful charity.Bring your friends and family, have fun, keep fit, and enjoy the cake and refreshments at the Racecourse halfway point.

JUNE 2025
Lola (15)
AVAILABLE TO BUY OR RENT FROM GOOGLE AND AMAZON. This 2022 British Irish gem skilfully melds steampunk-esque sci-fi with documentary style ‘found footage’.
Two sisters, Thom and Martha, grow up as precocious orphans in rural 1940s Britain. Science loving Thom invents a device, LOLA, which picks up radio and TV signals from the future. Initially the sisters use it for fun, developing a taste for 70s music, then WW2 starts and they realise it could have greater use in the war effort.
Once the Army gets involved a wedge is driven between the sisters as Thom commits to changing the future while Martha grapples with the ethics. Filmed in grainy black and white, there’s an ingenious last-minute revelation and a soundtrack of dystopian glam rock from Neil Hannon (The Divine Comedy). ‘LOLA’ brilliantly delivers high imagination on a low budget.

Struggling with Waiting Lists? You Have a Right to Choose and the Support to ‘Wait Well’
For many families in Shropshire and Telford, the path to a neurodiversity diagnosis such as autism, ADHD and related conditions can feel endless. Long delays, limited communication and a lack of support contribute to deep frustration and emotional strain for parents, children and individuals, all made worse by a system that often leaves them waiting without answers.
But for those navigating this uncertainty, hope is within reach.
This summer, The Owl Centre is shining a light on two vital services already transforming lives in our region: the Right to Choose referral pathway, and Waiting Well, a free national support hub offering practical tools and emotional guidance for those still on waiting lists.
What is “Right to Choose”?
The NHS Constitution gives every patient in England the legal right to choose their provider for many services, including Autism and ADHD assessments. This means you don’t have to accept a long wait if there’s a better alternative. You can ask your GP to refer you directly to a trusted service.
The Owl Centre is one such provider. Fully funded through the NHS, we offer gold-standard, multi-professional assessments for both adults and children, delivered through a kind, consistent and person-centred approach. Referral must be made via your GP, allowing you to access the right care sooner, without hidden costs or the need to go private.
With a team of psychologists,
occupational therapists, and speech and language specialists, we work closely with families to make the assessment process feel respectful, clear, and above all, human. Clinic appointments are available in Telford and Oswestry
Learn more: www.theowl.org/nhsright-to-choose
Support While You Wait
Even with alternative routes, the reality is that some people will still face delays. That’s where Waiting Well steps in.
Created by The Owl Centre Charity with support from the National Lottery Community Fund, Waiting Well is the UK’s first free online support hub created specifically for people on a waiting list for neurodiversity assessments. It was built with and for people who are living through this journey now - young people, adults, and families who understand what it feels like to be in limbo, and who want to make the waiting time more bearable, less lonely, and better informed.
Our hub offers: Evidence-based video support from occupational therapists, psychotherapists and education professionals
Mental health resources to help with sleep, anxiety, and everyday overwhelm Real stories from families and practitioners through the Hoot’s Hoo podcast
Practical guidance for school, work and home life while awaiting diagnosis
You don’t need a diagnosis to access this support. Waiting Well was built on the principle that every individual deserves care, understanding and guidance, regardless of where they are in the process.
Visit: www.waitingwell.co.uk
“We Were Left in the Dark” Lynette, a mother from Worcestershire, remembers all too clearly the heartbreak of waiting. “We were on a list for two and a half years,” she said. “There were moments I didn’t know how we’d get through. On Christmas Day, my daughter sat on the stairs sobbing, saying she didn’t want to live. There was no help. We were lost.” Her daughter, Bethany, eventually received an autism diagnosis, but the support she needed came far too late. “I wish Waiting Well had existed back then,” Lynette says. “It would’ve changed everything.”
Taking the Next Step
For anyone waiting for answers - for their child or themselves - there is now a real opportunity to take back a sense of control.
You can ask your GP for a referral to The Owl Centre under Right to Choose and start the journey with a team who understands and listens. And in the meantime, Waiting Well is here to walk beside you.
• Every voice matters and every step forward begins with being heard.
• The help you need is no longer out of reach.

Fitness Focus
My name is Rad Danailov, and I’m the owner of Coach House Fitness, tucked away, just behind the Wynnstay Hotel in the heart of Oswestry.
At Coach House Fitness, we’re not about one-size-fitsall fitness. Every member gets a personalised training programme, included with all membership types, because your goals are unique—and we’re here to help you reach them. We’ve grown into a vibrant community offering not just gym facilities but a wide range of classes, bootcamps, and personal training sessions that bring people together and keep motivation high.
Today, I want to talk about fitness, wellbeing, and the real health benefits of regular exercise. At Coach House Fitness, we believe health should always come first. Fitness isn’t just about changing how you look—it can completely change how you live. The benefits of regular exercise are wide-ranging and hard to ignore. According to the NHS, being active can lower your risk of serious conditions like coronary heart disease, stroke, type 2
diabetes, and certain cancers. It also helps prevent osteoarthritis, hip fractures, and falls, and protects against cognitive decline, including dementia and Alzheimer’s. That’s how powerful movement can be.
Weight loss also brings huge improvements to overall health—like reducing the risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, and type 2 diabetes. But it goes even further. Physical activity can boost self-esteem, lift your mood, improve sleep, increase energy, and reduce stress. We see these changes in our members every day—and we never get tired of watching that transformation unfold.
Whether your goal is to build strength, lose weight, or simply feel better in yourself, our instructors are always on hand and happy to share their knowledge and create the right plan for you.
We believe exercise should be accessible to everyone in a clean, safe, welcoming space. That belief drives everything we do.
To learn more, visit www.coachhousefitness.net, or to book a free 30-minute consultation and gym trial, email us at info@coachhousefitness.net.
No matter where you’re starting from, we’re here to help you become the healthiest, happiest version of yourself.
New minor diabetic foot service launched
A new minor diabetic foot service has launched at The Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital, which provides essential surgical intervention for diabetic patients with tendon-related foot conditions. the service, which runs in partnership with the shrewsbury and telford Hospital nHs trust (satH), aims to support patients who require minor procedures, such as toe tenotomies, to prevent the progression of deformities that can lead to serious complications, including ulcers and infection.
It has been introduced in response to an increasing demand for specialist foot surgery for diabetic patients in shropshire – which has one of the highest amputation rates in the country. the initiative was developed by ms Catriona Heaver and mr Chris marquis, Consultant Orthopaedic surgeons, alongside a project team. It has been rolled out following two successful pilots.
ms Heaver said: “this service is a fantastic step forward in providing timely intervention for diabetic patients with tendon-related foot problems. By offering minor procedures in a day case setting, we can help prevent more serious complications and improve long-term outcomes.”
mr marquis added: “We are delighted to collaborate with our colleagues at satH to establish this service.
using best practice that already exists from hand surgery pathways means we can ensure a smooth, patientcentred approach to care. Early intervention is key in managing diabetic foot conditions.” patients who have already undergone procedures through the service have shared positive feedback. this innovative service represents an important collaboration between RJaH and satH, demonstrating a commitment to improving diabetic foot care in the region. nicky Beard, podiatry diabetes lead at satH, has been working alongside ms Heaver and mr marquis. she said: “Claw and hammer toe deformity frequently develops in people with diabetes and leads to increased pressure on the end of the toes and, in combination with neuropathy, can result in diabetic foot ulcers.
“By offering these minor procedures, it is easy to reduce the severity of their claw or hammer toes, heal wounds and prevent ulcer reoccurrence in the future.”
Patients Carl Dean and David Thomas who were part of the pilot.

Reiki Brought Me Back to Me
by Jenna Ward, Personal Growth Coach and Reiki Practitioner.
Reiki (energy healing) came into my life when I was going through a difficult period. For months I’d felt lost, sad, alone, not like Me. My then partner’s mum is a Reiki master, and she asked if I’d ever had Reiki. I’d never heard of it, didn’t understand what it was and didn’t care. I trusted her and I wanted to feel better, happier, lighter.
A couple of weeks later, after a mundane day, I lay on her couch feeling quite neutral as if I was mindlessly watching telly. She placed her hands over my heart, and I closed my eyes. After a few moments tears came, slow at first, and then heavy sobs and an epic release of stored emotions I didn’t even know were there. I didn’t know why I was crying, I had no thoughts, no reason, but it was deep, pained crying. I cried for what turned out to be about 40 minutes and then, just like that, without either of us moving, the sobs stopped, then the tears. I felt at peace, calm. Lighter.
I had been giving a lot of time tending to my physical and emotional wellbeing, but I am also energy. Energy is everything, everywhere, all the time; you are energy, I’m energy, the space (however big) between us is energy, this magazine is energy. For me, Reiki was the missing
piece. From that point things slowly started to lift, and I started my journey back to Me, through Reiki, coaching, meditation, journaling, making time for things that brought me joy. This is why I became a Reiki practitioner; to help others find their way back to themselves and their joy. So, if you’re feeling lost or just ‘not right’, maybe consider giving Reiki a try.

Woods Orthotics Celebrates a Year of Transforming Lives
June marks a significant milestone for Woods Orthotics as the innovative clinic celebrates its first anniversary. Founded by state-registered Orthotists Ffion and Tom, Woods Orthotics has committed itself to the health and well-being of the community by providing tailored solutions that alleviate pain and enhance mobility. As they commemorate this occasion, they reflect on an incredible year spent helping clients reclaim their lives from chronic leg and foot pain.
Pain in the legs and feet can be a daunting challenge, limiting daily activities and altering one’s lifestyle. From enjoying leisurely walks in the beautiful Oswestry countryside to playing with grandchildren, discomfort can hinder precious moments. Sadly, the statistics are telling: nearly 10 million people in the UK are living with Arthritis, a condition that often brings debilitating pain and mobility issues.
Woods Orthotics understands the everyday struggles faced by those suffering from such conditions. The clinic specialises in providing custom orthotics, which are braces or supportive devices designed to relieve discomfort in the feet, knees, and legs. Whether it’s an injury, a chronic condition, or age-related wear and tear, the right orthotic can make all the difference.
Recognising the importance of early intervention, the expert team at Woods Orthotics emphasises the need for individuals to seek professional help when experiencing pain. A detailed biomechanical assessment is crucial in identifying the root cause of discomfort, allowing for personalised treatment options tailored to individual needs. Ffion and Tom combine their considerable expertise—honed through years of experience with the NHS and the renowned Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital—to ensure each patient receives the highest standard of care.
technology to support precise assessments. This dedication to quality doesn’t end there; Woods Orthotics is also unique in that they manufacture their foot orthotics, leveraging relationships with top suppliers and manufacturers in the orthotic industry to provide clients with the best available solutions.
Ffion and Tom combine their considerable expertise—honed through years of experience with the NHS and the renowned Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital— to ensure each patient receives the highest standard of care.

“Take care of your body –it’s where you live” Anon
Father’s Day is 15 June this year – and this marks the 2025 Men’s Health Week. Why have a week just for men? I hear you ask. Well, we live on average 4 years less than the “weaker sex”, have more heart disease, more cancers, and more suicides. Combine this with the fact we’re generally poor at working out when to seek health advice and you can see why we need a week focused on us!
The NHS introduced 5-yearly health checks from the age of 40 whilst I was in practice. The uptake was generally poor and remains so today. What does this check involve? It usually lasts about 20 minutes and often the nurse, or pharmacist, will measure your weight, height, and your waist. They will check your blood pressure and you’ll be asked about your diet, exercise level, cigarette and alcohol use and perhaps your mental health. Any family history of some illnesses will be
considered and you may have checks for diabetes and your cholesterol level. These tests can give an idea of your risk of stroke and heart attack over the following 10 years and, more importantly, what you can do to reduce that risk. Your GP practice and some local pharmacies offer these opportunities.
There are a number of local men’s health groups that might suit some of us: maintaining social contacts is one marker for living longer. Men in Sheds has been going for some years now whilst Men Walking and Talking is more recent. Both have an internet presence. Staying physically active is another marker of longevity and there are a number of local groups encouraging walks (Oswestry Ramblers is one). There are also some good deals on memberships at local gyms in town. Just trying to be a bit more active is the goal. Our cars have regular MOTs – is it time for yours?
Children living with the impact of cancer to be given specialist support
A
‘vital project’ dedicated to supporting children living with cancer in the family is being launched by the region’s primary cancer charity – to meet a growing call for help.
Lingen Davies Cancer Fund has teamed up with Happiness for All CIC, an Oswestry-based organisation that works with young people to increase resilience, offer light therapy counselling services, and help improve their confidence.
The Kids Happiness Club will provide group sessions for children and young people who have a loved one going through cancer treatment. A cancer diagnosis does not just affect the person themselves but has a huge impact on their family and friends too. If a young person has a parent, sibling or other close loved one going through cancer, the influence on their mental health can be significant.
The project is a first for the 46-year-old charity that exists to make a positive difference to lives impacted by cancer across Shropshire, Telford and Mid Wales. Last year the organisation spent £1,000,000 on projects to benefit patients in the region, but now the charity wants to expand the offering and has agreed a £10,000 funding pot to help youngsters who are struggling.
Naomi Atkin, CEO of Lingen Davies Cancer Fund, said, “We know from our community that children and young people living with a close family member going through cancer, are struggling.
“We’re tremendously proud that we’re able to expand our cancer support services to offer this provision. We know there’s a need for more support for the family and close friends of those dealing with cancer and we are
working hard to fund services to fill that gap. This project to offer light therapy to young people themselves is our first step towards that goal.”
The sessions will be run in person in Shrewsbury, Telford and Newtown, and online, with two groups (one for aged 6-11year olds, and one for 11-18s) starting in Shrewsbury to run on Saturday mornings in June.
Well-known happiness coach Katie Millard will be leading the sessions and said she is really looking forward to supporting this group of people.
“This isn’t something for young cancer patients themselves, who receive specialist emotional support as part of their treatment. This is an essential project to help those who may have siblings, parents, grandparents or close family who are going through cancer. It’s not intended to be a heavy form of therapy, it’s not counselling, it’s a lighter approach.
“Children will be encouraged to talk about the things affecting them, and that might be something other than cancer. It’s an opportunity for them to talk about what’s important to them – whatever that might be,” she added.
The Kids Happiness Club is not intended to be a support service for children suffering bereavement – Macmillan or the Winstons Wishes charity are recommended starting points for help.

From celebrities to fundraising: Victoria Sugden’s journey to Oswestry hospital charity
From having Tom Jones’ number in her Filofax to managing the band of volunteers helping patients at Oswestry’s orthopaedic hospital, Victoria Sugden has certainly had a varied career.
Victoria is the director at the League of Friends of the Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Hospital and has been explaining more about her role in a podcast with Lanyon Bowdler Solicitors.
The law firm, which has offices in Oswestry and is a long-time supporter of the RJAH, produces a regular podcast called The Legal Lounge, discussing a range of topics and featuring local charities.
Chatting with Dawn Humphries, Lanyon Bowdler’s head of the personal injury team, Victoria says
the Friends of the RJAH really do play their part in creating such a caring and supportive environment for patients and their families.
As Victoria puts it, “I love it when you see that in action - someone comes in feeling a bit lost or a bit worried, and our volunteers are bright and breezy and straight by their side to give them help and support.”
Victoria has had an interesting career journey, which eventually led to Oswestry, starting at an advertising agency in Cardiff involving getting to know various celebrities.
Victoria says, “We were doing a big project to encourage youth employment across Wales, which involved a lot of Welsh celebrities ranging from a very young Ryan
Giggs to Tanni Grey-Thompson - and I even had Tom Jones’s fax number for a time.
“That led to a job with an agency in London, which I enjoyed but I was increasingly finding that although I loved the creativity there wasn’t enough meaning in the work. It was when I went on to work at the Royal Marsden Hospital, a world-renowned cancer hospital, that I knew I had found my place in life.
“Following that we moved to the northwest and I saw an opportunity to work here at the Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Hospital - the past 11 years have absolutely flown by!”

Have you ever looked around your home and thought “’arghhh we could do with more space”, or are you about to have a tidy up but don’t want to throw everything out?
For many homeowners, the loft is an underutilised area because it can be difficult and dangerous to reach. Shrewsbury based loft ladder installer, Access4Lofts, whose slogan is ‘Creating Space The Easy Way’ can change all that, often in less than a day.
Access4Lofts Shrewsbury is owned by Jonathan O’Connor. Much of the work he carries out is for growing families. “I know how crucial storage space can be for large families,” says Jonathan. “I also find that a large percentage of my clients are retired people looking for the safest access to their loft available.”

Installing a loft ladder and boarding is quick and affordable. It’s less expensive than a garden shed, and it means you don’t have to store everything out of the house.
Jonathan says that with space at such a premium, it makes sense to make the most of your loft. “Installing a loft ladder and boarding is quick and affordable. It’s less expensive than a garden shed, and it means you don’t have to store everything out of the house.”

Some homeowners who perhaps inherited an old loft ladder, may want to consider an upgrade. “The new ladders are spring-assisted and lighter so they’re much easier to use,” he says, “the ladders can also come with a safety handrail and there is an option of wide-tread wooden steps. There’s really no need for anyone to be struggling in and out of the loft anymore.”

Speckled
Polka dots are trending! Whilst always a timeless classic, polka dots surge in their popularity and availability on products and right now it’s having a moment. However, I doubt anyone wants the interiors of their house resembling a set from CBeebies. Enter, Speckles. The softer alternative of spots and dots. Speckles can cover a multitude of sins and come across more organic and natural as the application of the pattern is irregular and often asymmetric. There are so many options with speckles; terrazzo tiles, stoneware dishes and flecked upholstery, all convey texture and interest without over doing pattern. Playing with shape, scale and colour combinations mean you can make this pattern subdued and unobtrusive, or playful and energetic. It’s hard to dislike the confetti nature of this pattern.

The last of the rhododendrons and azaleas will soon fade from our gardens as June heralds the arrival of the roses. Time for gardeners to put out bedding plants and hanging baskets once the threat of late spring frosts has passed. There is much to look forward to as summer arrives.
The National Garden Scheme has plenty to offer garden lovers in the glorious countryside bordering Shropshire and Powys. The weekend of 31 May/1 June (2-5PM) sees Clawdd-Y-Dre opening in Montgomery (SY15 6PT). A wellestablished three-quarter acre garden with a wide range of shrubs and perennials, there are stunning views across the valley whilst enjoying homemade teas. Afterwards, why not take a stroll around the town with its quaint shops in the shadow of the medieval castle.
A double treat is in store for the weekend of June 7/8 (1-5PM). Just across the border in Llanymynech is Tremynfa (SY22 6LA), a 1-acre garden of mixed cultivated and wild areas to encourage wildlife. There are unusual plants and trees, fruit and vegetable areas, ponds and a spinney. Minutes away by car in Llandrinio is The Malthouse (SY22 6SG), a C17 walled garden with herbaceous borders, vegetable garden and extensive views to the Breidden Hills. In both these gardens delicious
homemade teas await visitors, dogs are welcome, and plants will be for sale. Admission £6, children free.
Eight miles south-west of Oswestry lies Llangedwyn Hall (SY10 9JW) with its Grade 2 listed formal terraced garden looking south across the beautiful Tanat Valley. Woodland walks, formal ponds and a large kitchen garden frame the Elizabethan Hall (not open). There will be homemade teas to enjoy on the front lawn and plants for sale. Sorry, no dogs admitted. The gardens will be open on Sunday 29 June 12-4PM. Admission £6, children free.
We look forward to welcoming you to some of our June gardens. To find your perfect garden to visit and support the National Garden Scheme go to www.ngs.org.uk

June in the garden
by Graham Mitchell
June is finally here. I can relax a bit and keep my eyes off the weather forecast. The weather this spring has certainly kept us guessing. Sun umbrellas one week and thick jackets the next. My windowsills are finally empty, and the hanging baskets are looking good already.
I always grow too many plants for my garden so pass a lot on to friends, fellow allotment holders and family. However, I do tend to cram as many as I can in the courtyard, and you will find odd vegetable and fruit plants in amongst the containers. I grow my blueberries in pots at the front of the house, where I can keep an eye on them. A good ericaceous compost and mulch of pine needles combined with watering only using rainwater ensures they are happy and hopefully I’ll get a good crop. My water butt is looking rather empty, but luckily, I have a full one in reserve on the allotment.
I felt that all blossom was particularly good this year, and fruit seems to be forming. An apple tree would not be able to support the weight of fruit produce if every flower resulted in success. It’s natural for only about 5% of apple flowers to set fruit. Talking of support, it’s now time to regularly stake, support and tie in plants as they grow.
Unfortunately, it’s not just the veg and flowers that are growing rapidly. The weeds tend to grow even faster. Weeding and watering are top priority now. Regular checking around the garden will quickly identify problems and make them easier to cure. Whether it’s a pest invasion, lack of water or in need of a feed, the sooner spotted the sooner resolved. My main issue is small containers that get hidden behind others and miss out on the daily watering.
Hopefully you’ll be enjoying some early fruit and vegetables this month along with some tasty salad crops. I can never wait for the first picking of broad beans, it tells me that summer really is here.
Need to check all the pots!
RETIREMENT PLANNING MADE EASY
IS AN ANNUITY THE RIGHT OPTION FOR YOU?
Retirement should be a time to relax and enjoy life, but for many, the fear of running out of money can turn it into a source of stress.
If this is something concerning you, you may be considering an annuity – but what exactly is it, and how do you know if it’s the right choice for you?
Here, Craig Roberts, independent financial adviser and director at Belgrave Wincham, explains: What is an annuity?
In simple terms, an annuity is a financial product that gives you a guaranteed income for a set period of time or for the rest of your life – no matter what happens in the markets.
It’s this security that can provide peace of mind, especially if you’re worried about economic ups and downs affecting your savings. This can also make retirement budgeting easier, as you’ll have a reliable stream of income.
Another benefit is that annuities can help take the guesswork out of your finances. With a guaranteed income, you may feel more confident about covering your regular expenses - though keep in mind that standard fixed annuities won’t increase to match rising living costs over time.
Is an annuity right for you?
While annuities offer security, they may not suit everyone.
Once you buy an annuity, you typically can’t change your mind or access your money if your circumstances change. So, if you need flexibility, expect major expenses down the road, have health concerns, or want to leave substantial assets to your family, an annuity might not be the best option.
Either way, it’s important to think carefully about what suits your retirement goals and future plans.
If you’re unsure, make an appointment to speak with an independent financial adviser. They can help you decide what’s right for your needs and guide you through the range of options based on your personal circumstances.

How do I evict my tenants so that I can sell up?
Q: I own a rental property that I bought some years ago with the proceeds of an inheritance. It was always my intention to sell it when I was coming up to retirement age as I don’t have a private pension, but unfortunately ill health is forcing me to retire early. The same tenants have been in the property for several years and we have always got on, but as soon as I mentioned that I was going to have to sell they became quite aggressive and told me I couldn’t evict them under new legislation. What exactly are my rights as a landlord?
A: As a landlord, you have rights and responsibilities, as do your tenants. One of your rights is the right to regain possession of the property if you wish to sell it. You must, however, do it using the correct legal procedures. Currently you can still evict by issuing your tenants with a Section 21 notice, but once the Renters’ Rights Bill has been passed, Section 21 will be abolished.
Section 21 eviction requires the landlord to issue the tenant a written notice, giving a minimum of two months’ notice. If the tenant fails to vacate the property by the date stated on the Section 21 notice the landlord can apply through the court for a possession order. If the tenant still refuses to leave, a bailiff may be appointed to evict them.
Once Section 21 has been abolished, landlords will no longer be able to evict a tenant at two months’ notice without giving a reason and every eviction will require a Section 8 notice that states one or more valid grounds for the eviction. However, evicting because a landlord wishes to sell the property will still be considered a valid reason to serve notice on the incumbent tenant. If you have any concerns about being compliant with current legislation, a litigation solicitor will be able to advise you.
