Oswestry Community Games Success

The thirteenth annual Oswestry Community Games proved to be another outstanding success, with favourable weather helping attract around 1,000 people of all ages to Cae Glas Park.

Event Lead Organiser James Manford said, “Many thanks go to our local sponsors – Oswestry Town Council, Oswestry BID, Oswestry Sports Forum, Bunning Gas, DRE Accountants, Perspective Finance Group, Oswestry Rotary – Mary Hignett Fund, and our media partner Oswestry Life Magazine, who all help make this event possible.

“Thanks also go to all the club volunteers and helpers who gave their time so willingly, our Guest of Honour Nick Beighton, and Radio Shropshire’s Paul Shuttleworth, who acted as MC. “Special thanks also go to David Osselton from Oswestry Photographic Society for once again being our official photographer, Mal Molloy as videographer, Oswestry Town Mayor Councillor Jonathan Upton, Town Crier Phil Brown, and Head Park Keeper Sue Cameron and her team for making the park look fantastic.

Lingen Davies Cancer Support charity has launched a new committee, with the challenge to raise £50k this year to improve the lives of those living with cancer in Shropshire.

If you would like to join the committee they are still open to new members and are keen to set up a directory of volunteers in the area. Oswestry Sports Entrepreneur Launches Kids Summer Sports Events

Shropshire Lawn Tennis Association’s Young Person of the Year, 19-year-old Erin Oakley from Oswestry is launching a series of fun-filled summer sports festival days for kids at Oswestry Showground this summer.

The multi-talented teenager, a former County tennis player, ex-TNS

and Wrexham FCs youth footballer, and an award-winning all-rounder in the successful Oswestry Women & Girls’ cricket team, established her own sports coaching business last year.

The young entrepreneur has a host of recognised coaching qualifications, including from UEFA, FAW, the LTA and ECB in football, tennis and cricket respectively.

The sports festivals will take place between 9am - 2pm each day across 10, 11 and 12 August, with 12 August dedicated as a girls’ only day. With early expressions of interest already coming in, a further three dates have been added at the

end of the school holidays on 24, 25 and 26 August at the Oswestry Showground.

As well as high quality coaching on offer, a host of fun games and activities will be delivered by Erin at the showground. She will be supported by fellow experienced coaches all with advanced DBS certification. The cost per day is £30, which includes a goodie bag and free T-shirt for participants. Booking is essential.

Oswestry CC Hosts Women’s Softball Festival of Cricket, Culture & Community Photo © Nicola JermaiNe-JoNes

Oswestry Cricket Club’s successful Women & Girls’(WaGs) section will host an exciting celebration of women’s cricket at the club’s Stonehouse Oval ground in Morda Road on Sunday 5 July.

The day-long event starts with a Festival of Softball Cricket, Culture & Community, exclusively sponsored by leading Shropshire law firm, Lanyon Bowdler Solicitors. The action starts at 9:30am with nine women’s and girls’ teams, including three U11s sides, participating in a round robin competition under the aegis of Cricket Shropshire.

The profile of women’s cricket has been turbocharged this summer with England hosting the ICC’s Women’s T20 World Cup tournament.

Played across June and culminating in the final at Lord’s on the afternoon of 5 July, the ICC tournament featured 12 of the world’s best international women’s cricket teams playing to huge crowds in some of England’s most iconic cricket venues, including Edgbaston, Old Trafford, The Oval and Lords.

On a more local level, Oswestry’s WaGs are fully embracing the carnival spirit created by the Women’s T20 World Cup competition and will conclude their morning softball festival with a celebratory T20 Women’s World Cup Final watch party and luncheon in the main pavilion in the afternoon.

“We’ll be tapping into that huge occasion for female cricket in a big way with a celebration of our own women’s cricket in our fantastic pavilion,” said Oswestry WaGs Team Manager, Jools Payne. “We’ll have the Lord’s final on the big screen, the Prosecco flowing, and the whole place will be festooned with Women’s T20 World Cup branded flags, bunting, balloons and banners.

The private luncheon will feature traditional dishes that reflect the cricketing nations taking part in the World Cup tournament.

“We’ll be dining on tasty samosas, pakoras, bhajis and South Asian curries, generously donated by our friends at Oswestry’s Simla Restaurant as part of their 50th anniversary celebrations. So, a massive shout out to George and Julie for their much-appreciated support,” added Jools.

“We’ll have jerk chicken, rice and peas, New Zealand kiwi fruits and juicy citrus fruits from South Africa.

Naturally, England will be represented by a traditional English cricket tea, so there will be scones and jam, and sandwiches … with the crusts cut off of course,” she laughed.

“And no Aussie cricket tea is complete without a Lamington cake or Pavlova, so players can expect to see those on the buffet table too, as well as haggis fritters and chocolate Guinness cake – yes, Scotland and Ireland both qualified for the tournament.”

The festival event will also feature pitchside fun and games

for players’ families led by qualified UEFA C and FAW coach, Erin Oakley from The Oakley Method, including cricket, mini-football, tennis, paddle, and skills challenges.

Welshpool Printing Group (WPG) is sponsoring the festival’s Player of the Tournament awards for the best adult and best U11s performers.

Festival sponsors Lanyon Bowdler Solicitors will also make a special award for the festival’s Most Memorable Moment, judged by the match officials.

Whilst spectators are warmly encouraged to come along to watch the festival action, only pre-registered teams, sponsors and guests will be able to access the watch party and luncheon in the main pavilion with an official event wrist band.

The club’s Gwilym Owen bar at the car park end of the pavilion will however be open to spectators from 9 am for soft drinks and snacks and will be serving alcoholic beverages from 11am–9 pm.

Ali’s Journey: From Diagnosis to Determination When Ali was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes in 2017, she found herself facing a future that felt uncertain. Like many, she was given dietary advice and, not long after, prescribed medication to help manage her condition.

By Helen Morgan – MP for North Shropshire Summer has arrived, and there really is nowhere quite like North Shropshire at this time of year.

With rolling countryside, historic market towns like Oswestry, and stunning scenery on our doorstep, we are incredibly fortunate to live and work in such a beautiful, rural part of the world.

But while rural life offers many advantages, it also comes with challenges - one of the most persistent is poor broadband.

Repeatedly, I hear from residents and businesses across Oswestry and North Shropshire who are being held back by unreliable internet. We live in a world where so much daily life depends on being online - from running a business, accessing healthcare, to helping children with homework.

Yet, despite national progress, rural areas still lag significantly behind urban areas. Around one in five properties in North Shropshire still don’t have access to gigabit ‘full-fibre’ connections, and around one in twenty can’t even access superfast broadband.

Local businesses report lost productivity and delays in payments. Farmers struggle to make modern digital

systems work, and families are forced to juggle unreliable connections.

In our increasingly connected world, a poor internet connection isn’t just frustrating - it’s a barrier to growth, opportunity, and as crucial to everyday life as any other utility.

Plans to roll out full-fibre broadband in this area stalled under an initial contractor. The good news is that nearly 9,000 properties in North Shropshire will soon be getting fast fibre broadband connections from Openreach under Project Gigabit. This includes thousands of homes in and around Oswestry. Check if you’re included: www.gov.uk/guidance/check-yourgigabit-broadband-availability Rural communities like ours deserve better. If we want Oswestry and North Shropshire to thrive, to attract businesses, and to support our communities, then connectivity must be a greater priority.

Two Years of Helping Oswestry Hear Better February marked an important milestone for Cambrian Hearing as the independent audiology clinic celebrated two successful years at Old Chapel Court in Oswestry.

Since opening its doors in 2024, Cambrian Hearing has helped thousands of people from Oswestry and the surrounding areas improve their hearing and reconnect with the sounds that matter most. The paradox of treatment Are you taking statin medication? Roughly 10 million people in the UK do: about 20% of the adult population. They must be very effective drugs I hear you say, and they are, reducing the risk of having a stroke or heart attack by 30%. Sounds impressive and there are thousands fewer strokes as a result.

But here comes the paradox: most of my patients assumed treatments would benefit them personally: most had never heard about NNTs (or numbers needed to treat). The number of patients a doctor would have to treat with statins to prevent a stroke or heart attack depends on how high the risk in that particular patient is but, even in the highrisk patients (those with previous strokes or heart attacks, or a greater than 20% 10-year risk of these according to the Qrisk calculator GPs use) the NNT is roughly 30-40. So, 30-40 patients would have to

take a statin for five years to prevent one event. For low-risk patients the NNT rises to 100-400!

“But you said statins reduced the risk by up to 30%,” I hear you say, and they do. But that is what’s called relative risk reduction or RRR. Now, RRR is calculated by comparing the affected group of patients to a matched group with the result based on the percentage difference in the event occurring between the two groups. So, if you had a hundred patients and ten were going to have a stroke without treatment but only seven did on treatment then that is a 30% reduction. But perhaps a more meaningful figure is the absolute rate reduction (ARR): in this case three people out of the 100 treated did not have a stroke: a 3% reduction.

I rarely had a conversation with patients that went into these complexities; but perhaps I should have: perhaps things have changed since I retired and if I have made your head spin a bit I apologise!

Childhood Obesity Week This month’s focus is on national Childhood obesity Week (6-12 July) a subject of increasing concern to Public Health. during the pandemic, the national rate of childhood obesity among kids ages 2 to 19 increased to 22.4%.

Stick, Twist or Move On

Back in March, I took three weeks out from my normal life. I went somewhere new and did new things. The time away left me feeling inspired and excited for a new chapter. I was reminded how much I enjoy being active, working with my hands, exerting physical energy rather than mental energy, and spending time outside. These things make me feel good, so it’s important to make time for them.

It also got me thinking. A lot of my 1:1 life coaching work is done online, with clients in different countries and across the UK. My work also involves marketing, content creation and planning, all from behind a screen.

Reiki sessions aside, I spend a lot of time on a computer or mobile, which can drain my energy and leave me feeling funky (not the good kind).

For a while, I’ve been wondering what to do about it. More in-person workshops? More Reiki? Something entirely new? For a long time, that last option felt like failure. But while I was away, I caught myself thinking, “What’s next?” and instead of fear, it felt exciting. I couldn’t ignore that.

So, the question became: do I stick, twist or move on?

The answer I’ve come to is twist.

I still love supporting people to clear space mentally, emotionally and energetically, and to move forward in ways that feel right for them. Also, I want to be more active and outdoors.

So alongside coaching and Reiki, I’m expanding into home and garden care, supporting wellbeing - mine and

yours - in practical ways too.

It can be scary to admit something isn’t working for you anymore, or to try something your inner critic says you have no business doing. But if we don’t try, we’ll never know.

Sometimes it doesn’t take dismantling your whole life, just a small shift towards something that feels lighter, more expansive and more you.

Recipe

Pecan and maple syrup flapjacks These quick and easy sweet treats are delicious for breakfast or brunch – and perfect for a picnic!

Makes 16 portions Preparation time 20 minutes Cooking time 30 minutes

IngredIents

• 300g butter, plus extra to grease • 150ml pure maple syrup (preferably dark for its robust taste) • 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon • A pinch of salt • 75g shelled pecans, toasted in a dry pan and chopped • 500g rolled oats For the drizzle topping • 25g white chocolate, chopped • 2 tbsp pure Canadian maple syrup (preferably amber for its rich taste) • 1 tbsp shelled pecans, toasted in a dry pan and chopped

Method

1. Preheat the oven to 150°C, fan 130°C, gas mark 1.

Grease and line a 20 x 30 cm baking tray.

2. Put the butter, maple syrup and cinnamon in a pan with a pinch of salt and stir until melted. Add the nuts and oats and stir well with a wooden spoon to coat.

3. Spoon the mixture into the prepared baking tray, level the top, pressing down slightly, then bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes.

4. Remove from the oven and score 16 squares, then leave to cool completely in the tray on a wire rack.

5. For the topping, put the chocolate and maple syrup in a heatproof bowl set over a pan of barely simmering water (don’t let the bowl touch the water), heat until just melted, then stir and drizzle over the flapjacks.

6. Sprinkle with chopped pecans, then cut into squares to serve.

Something for the Road Ambling eats for picnic pros, snack grabbers and hungry hikers

Summer days are here! Well, at least momentarily. If you happen to be reading this during a rainy interval you can commend yourself for forward planning, since we are talking dinner al fresco.

With chasing sporadic sunshine being essentially a national sport, there’s no doubt the major leagues are playing in the supermarket. A battle royale of pickybits, Pimm’s and questionably successful disposable bbq purchases. And although there is a charm in the scramble, a real win can come from tactical supermarket avoidance; for plate, planet and mental composure. This month I am taking a conscious detour to three Oswestry producers that are well worth a route deviation. Because why not get in some additional summer sightseeing whilst the days are long and there’s a wealth of local community produce?

For the picnic planner – Babbinswood farm on the outskirts of Oswestry sells organic meat, dairy and veg in their on-site farm shop. Go open to embracing seasonality and being inspired, see plans of humble potato salad becoming a rare varietal purple potato salad to wow the family (or at least get some curious looks). Babbinswood are currently fighting to save the farm through community ownership, keeping the land protected as organic as well as saving this asset to the local community.

For the nature seeker – If you are heading to the great outdoors and wanting to load up with a local lunch en-route, take a meander through the scenic hills to Treflach Farm. With a focus on community and sustainability, Treflach has their own bakery on sight plus a tiny honesty-box shop where you can buy ready-to-eat frozen pies, quiche, organic meats and veggie options. Defrosted in time for a deserving munch after hitting the hills.

For the kids in the car – A mention-worthy drop-by spot to put a stop to back seat grumbles or front seat breakfast skippers; Herd is most known for its self serve milkshakes but also has yogurt pots and granola from Niche bakery.

I Am Not an Easy Man (15) STREAMING NOW ON NETFLIX

Netflix recently released ‘Ladies First’, a high-concept gender role reversal comedy that has attracted distinctly poor reviews, making now the ideal time to revisit the French original that inspired it.

While the remake has been criticised for overly softening the idea’s sharper edges, 2018’s ‘I Am Not an Easy Man’ won praise for being gently provocative and genuinely funny.

The film follows Damien, a smug chauvinist who wakes after an accident to discover he is living in a world where gender roles are reversed. Men are objectified, judged on their appearance and expected to be submissive, while women occupy nearly every position of power. Damien finds himself dismissed in the workplace, subjected to unwanted attention and struggling to be taken seriously, making him confront the sexism he inflicted on others.

The film mixes broad comedy with social commentary. Its strength lies in its refusal to preach, letting viewers recognise the inherent absurdities for themselves. Funny, clever, entertaining and thought-provoking, it’s an easy watch.

An old favourite returns Can you believe it’s 50 years since VHS tapes were first produced!

The Video Home System quickly revolutionised home entertainment, allowing us to record TV shows and rent films - leading to a boom in High Street video rental shops.

Then in the late 90s along came DVDs, and more recently digital streaming. VHS was confined to the bin.

But despite its obsolescence, VHS has been enjoying a bit of a comeback, fuelled by social media platforms where users widely share their collections and nostalgic memories. Who’d have thought it! But then again, who’d have predicted that vinyl records would make a comeback?

Of course, nothing beats seeing a film on a big screen. The place has been taken over by Steve and Sarah Owens, relative newcomers to Oswestry. Being musicians and teachers by profession, they are thrilled to have become the next custodians of such an historic venue with its amazing acoustics, and they hope to contribute to the cultural life of Oswestry for years to come.

Steve, who initially trained as a classical pianist/percussionist has spent a large part of his career touring as Music Director for major UK theatre companies as well as performing regularly in the West End and now teaches in Shrewsbury and Oswestry. Sarah was a professional singer for many years and now is a freelance vocal coach. She trains amateur and professional singers in Oswestry and Birmingham as well as working for the NHS in the voice clinic helping people with voice problems particularly when it affects their ability to sing.

Hermon Arts aims to bring a wide variety of professional acts to the Chapel to satisfy North Shropshire’s diverse demographic. Already, audiences have been wowed this year by an array of extraordinarily talented national and international jazz, folk, country and blues artists.

June saw the introduction of the first ever classical music series at the Hermon starting with a solo piano recital by Simone Damiani and then Joseph Martin (tenor) is to perform with Martin Bussey (piano). July kicks off with folk from Canada’s highly acclaimed band ‘The Fugitives’ who “despite their allacoustic lineup, bring enough energy to the stage to light up a small city!”

(Georgia Straight) and then ‘Alive with wings’ performing an eclectic mix of styles from around the world followed by some delta blues with Remi Harris (vocals) and Roger Keenan (vocals).

August begins with an opera night performed by ‘up and coming’ UK professional singers including the Wrexham baritone Samuel Snowden and another local singer, Mezzo Soprano Samantha Lewis performs an afternoon recital followed by Iago Banet on solo guitar. At the beginning of September, monthly Blue Lantern Sessions begin. These are intimate acoustic gigs, already very popular in Chester. They feature “some of the most talented Roots, World, and Acoustic artists in the current music scene” (Storyhouse). Not forgetting some outstanding jazz instrumentalists booked to play in September starting with ‘Golden Keys’, a vintage jazz take on the music of 007. The following week Ben Creighton Griffiths (harp), ’a true virtuoso’ (The Jazz man) performs with his

jazz trio. A Paul McCartney tribute act is lined up in the Autumn and Hermon Arts will finish the year with an array of Festive gigs to suit different musical tastes.

A PLACE WHERE PERFORMING ARTISTS CAN DEVELOP THEIR CRAFT

Steve and Sarah are also committed to enabling community use of the Chapel for performing arts projects as well as giving opportunities to develop musical and theatrical skills.

One such was the running of two workshops which helped develop confidence in singing, enabling participants who haven’t had much choral experience to sing the popular choral work, Carmina Burana by Carl Orf, at the ‘come and sing’ event at the end of June run by Oswestry based Cantiones choir. Songwriting, open mic and drum workshops are also in the offing as well as the opportunity to engage with one-toone instrumental tuition.

Hermon Chapel has a fully licensed bar and disabled seating spaces available. This year Steve and Sarah are entering ‘Oswestry in Bloom’ so have been busy outside the Chapel as well!

As the next chapter of the Hermon Chapel unfolds, the creative energy of the community is at the heart of its story. Sarah and Steve invite you to come and explore the live performances almost on your doorstep - what’s stopping you?!

A very lucky couple called at one of our recent roadshow events with a couple of old gold chains and a silver charm bracelet and a bag of old silver British coins.We paid them over £1600 just for the coins alone.

They turned out to be pre 1947 silver coins that were normal currency a few years ago and are now highly collected.

Meet the Makers Market Oswestry Makers Market is a vibrant community event that celebrates and supports local creativity and craftsmanship. Based in Oswestry’s Memorial Hall, the market showcases the talents of independent makers, artists and small businesses. It’s more than just a market – it’s a hub where creatives can come together, share their work and grow.

Their mission is to nurture new makers by giving them the confidence and skills needed to run their own market stall. There’s a free Market Masterclass for new stall holders, providing hints and tips on preparing and managing a stall. There’s also a WhatsApp group for makers to share ideas and get support. One of the stall holders, Amy from ‘Yudamori’ said, “Everybody is so supportive and very, very lovely.”

The creator behind Oswestry Makers Market is Maddy Moore. “I live with multiple chronic illnesses, which make traditional full time work difficult.

“I am a crafter and artist with many years’ experience, and I use craft as both a creative outlet and a way to give purpose to the long hours spent at home. I love many crafts but especially needlefelt, embroidery and digital art. I specialise in building portraits, and you can find my artwork around Oswestry, most recently being used in the Llwyd Mansion project.

“I craved the company of like-minded people, but travelling long distances isn’t always possible. I thought wouldn’t it be great if there was a regular local makers market that could support creatives within my own community. With the help and support of Paul and the team at Oswestry Memorial Hall, the Oswestry Makers Market was started. A market run by creatives for

creatives! We now have some regulars that come back every time, alongside many new stall holders trying a market for the first time: and a huge waiting list of people for future markets.

I will be turning the Makers Market into a CIC before the end of the year as I want to grow our community and provide free workshops. The first one will be starting in September and is called Sketch for health, predominantly aimed at people struggling with their mental health.

This will be a collaboration between myself and Nicola Ethelston, one of the artists from the makers market. I hope that other people will join in and provide their skills for future workshops.”

Maddy goes on to say, “Markets have always been a huge part of my life growing up, my dad was a market trader, so it’s very much in my blood. He had a pitch on Oswestry Market, on the Bailey Head carpark for 10 years before he passed away. I learnt a lot from him, especially that he was always at the front of the stall talking to people and other traders. It was a real community, and his passion has always stayed with me and is what I take into every event. We’ve tried to make our Makers Market just such a community. We support local musicians and ask other local groups to run a pop-up café to help raise funds for local good causes.”

Following the Makers Market on 6 June, the next market will take place at the hall on Saturday 5 September. Oswestry welcomes a new Mayor

ANNUAL REPORT 2025/26

Councillor Jonathan Upton has been elected as the new Mayor of Oswestry, following the town’s Mayor Making Ceremony on 11 May 2026. He takes up the role for the 2026/27 Civic Year, joining a line of civic leaders stretching back over 350 years to 1673.

A lifelong Oswestrian, Jonathan was first elected to the Council in 2021, representing Maserfield Ward, and has since chaired and served on numerous committees, championing residents’ interests.

Speaking at the ceremony, he said: “My family have lived in Oswestry and the surrounding areas for centuries, and my hope for 2026/27 is to make Oswestry not just the best town in Shropshire but the best town in the UK as well.”

Throughout his Mayoral Year, Jonathan will focus on three fundraising priorities: men’s mental health, the preservation of Oswestry’s heritage, and improving resources for elderly residents. Having experienced mental health challenges himself, he added: “It’s only right that I use my term to give Oswestrians a voice and support.”

Beyond the Council chamber, Jonathan is an NHS Administrator, a UNISON Steward and a volunteer at Oswestry Town Museum. He is also a founding member of Oswestry Men Walking and Talking, and it was his passion for vexillology - the study of flags - that led to the Banner of St Oswald being flown annually during St Oswald’s Week.

Jonathan will be supported by his mother as Mayoress, Cllr Ruth Simmonds, and will work alongside Deputy Mayor Councillor James Owen.

STAR Council of the Year – we did it!

Oswestry Town Council won ‘Council of the Year’ at the National Association of Local Councils STAR Council Awards, announced at the House of Lords on 24 February 2026.

The awards recognise parish and town councils that enrich residents’ lives through community dedication, collaboration and innovation.

This win reflects the strength of our partnerships with community organisations, public bodies and local businesses – a collaborative approach that will continue to guide everything we do.

The Centre After taking over The Centre on Oak Street from Shropshire Council two years ago to secure its future for the community, we have now completed significant roof repairs - a major investment in the building’s longevity. We are now working with TNS Foundation to improve access and encourage more groups to use the facility.

Bidding for UK Town of Culture We submitted our Expression of Interest to become UK Town of Culture. In our bid, we tried to capture what makes Oswestry truly special – our borderland identity, our rich heritage, our lively cultural scene and our extraordinary community spirit. Fingers crossed we make it to the next round!

Investing in young people

ANNUAL REPORT 2025/26

A protective scaffold has gone up around Llwyd Mansion as the team behind its restoration gets to grips with the full picture of what the 500-year-old building needs.

Detailed surveys carried out over the past year have revealed what Open day previous works had hidden – including rotting timbers and the removal of some structural timbers that have caused twisting and movement within the frame.

The scaffolding is a precautionary measure to stabilise the building and will remain in place throughout the restoration works.

The surveys and stabilisation are part of a £479,972 development phase funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, enabling us to bring together a specialist team of conservation architects, structural engineers, and interpretation and business consultants. Their findings have given the project a clear picture of what the restoration needs to achieve, and the confidence to move forward.

Community engagement has been running in parallel. More than 200 residents took the opportunity to step inside the mansion at a recent open day, with further consultation helping to shape plans for a mix of community, gallery and retail space.

The team is now pulling all this work together into funding applications to the National Lottery Heritage Fund, Historic England, the Pilgrim’s Trust, the Wolfson Foundation and the Architectural Heritage Fund.

If successful, restoration work could begin in earnest – with the doors of Llwyd Mansion hoped to open once more in 2029.

Our markets also offer budding business owners aged 16 to 30 free opportunities during the year to showcase their products, test their ideas and gain real hands-on trading experience – a great place to start.

We want children and young people to get the most out of growing up in Oswestry.

As well as championing young people through Oswestry Youth Forum and Oswestry Youth Music Festival, we have continued to fund the youth club at The Centre, SYA Time to Talk sessions at The Marches School, and a varied programme of holiday activities including bushcraft skills, arts and crafts, and sports sessions.

Grants have also been awarded via Oswestry Youth Forum. Oswestry Team Tennis was one of the happy recipients, receiving funding for Youth Cardio Tennis sessions to promote fitness, social skills and teamwork – all thanks to Maisie, who was 15 years old when she applied for funding.

Climate action

Looking after our trees

Eight years ago, we declared a climate emergency and committed to becoming carbon neutral by 2030.

We’ve been working hard ever since.

As well as eco improvements to the Guildhall, market and other council-owned facilities, we have installed EV charging points, introduced new planting schemes in our parks and reduced mowing where it is practical to boost biodiversity.

Our biggest project last year?

Upgrading all 450+ streetlights we manage to energy efficient LEDS.

Every two years, we commission an independent arboriculturist to survey all the trees in our care – recording type, location and condition to protect both their health and public safety.

Around 200 trees across Cae Glas Park, Brogyntyn Park, Oswestry Cemetery, St Oswald’s Churchyard and High Lea were surveyed last year. A combination of disease, damage from pests and extreme weather meant 23 required attention – with work including crowning, thinning, deadwooding and pollarding. Sadly, a diseased ash at the Welsh Walls end of Cae Glas Park needed to be removed.

Where trees have been taken down, disease-resistant replacements have been planted.

We have also given away more trees to community groups and individuals as part of our Big Tree Giveaway scheme, with our total now standing at a whopping 18,844 trees!

Caring for Cae Glas Park Cae Glas Park is the jewel in Oswestry’s crown – seven acres of beautifully maintained parkland right in the heart of town.

From established trees and stunning floral displays to a play area, bowling green, crazy golf, tennis, ping pong table and a bandstand hosting regular music events – there’s always something to enjoy.

Maintaining the park comes at significant cost, but when we asked residents what matters to them, the answer was clear – every penny is worth it.

Gumdrop bins arrive in Oswestry Did you know that chewing gum is the second most common form of litter in the UK, staining 77% of England’s streets? We are trialling a colourful new weapon in the fight against gum.

Bright pink Gumdrop bins have been installed outside Costa and Home Bargains, giving people an easy way to dispose of gum responsibly – turning a sticky nuisance into recycled products and helping to keep the town Bloom volunteers The first Gumdrop bins installed clean and tidy.

Oswestry struck Gold twice at last year’s Heart of England in Bloom competition, winning in the large town category and for Cae Glas Park. Natalie Bainbridge, who leads Oswestry in Bloom, also picked up a special award for her outstanding services to Bloom. The town later claimed Gold at the RHS Britain in Bloom national finals.

Natalie says success is very much a joint effort between volunteers, Oswestry Town Council and Oswestry BID: “These awards are a testament to the dedication and cooperation of everyone involved. The strength of Oswestry lies in its community and its volunteers.”

Two new ‘buzz’ shelters

In partnership with Shropshire Wildlife Trust, replacement bus shelters on Black Gate Street and by the Post Office on Willow Street have been fitted with living roofs planted with sedums, as part of a scheme to support local wildlife.

Known as bee bus stops, these green roofs help create a more sustainable, vibrant environment by absorbing rainwater, capturing carbon, and providing a habitat for bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. The shelters also offer passengers glazed protection from the sun, wind, rain and snow while they wait.

Working for you Oswestry Town Council is managed by 18 elected councillors representing seven town wards, each generally serving a four-year term on behalf of residents. They are supported by the Town Clerk and a small team of officers who maintain day-to-day services and community assets.

The Council does not receive government funding or a share of business rates. Income comes primarily from services it runs, such as markets and car parks, and a localised share of council tax.

Mayor Making 2026

Council responsibilities explained Oswestry Town Council operates within a rapidly changing landscape. Nationally, local government continues to face financial pressure, with services being restructured and responsibilities shifting between tiers of council.

We are seeing this in Shropshire, with ongoing discussions around how local services are delivered. Shropshire Council is already in the process of transferring some green spaces to Oswestry Town Council’s care – something we expect to happen towards the end of 2026. We are in good financial health and well positioned to take on these new responsibilities.

Below is a list of the current services provided by Oswestry Town Council and Shropshire Council. Later this year, we will also take on: Unicorn Playing Field, Broadlands Way/Henley Wood/Albany Park, Shelf Bank, Wilfred Owen Park/Green Space, Llwyn Coppice Play Park and Field; High Fawr Playing Field, Brynhafod Playing Field, Holly Green Play Park, and land behind Oswestry Leisure Centre.

We can only do what legislation permits us to do, but in partnership with our community and others, we will do everything we can to deliver our priorities and build a better community together.

DOGGY DIGESTION

Gut health problems are one of the most common reasons to take your dog to the vet. Digestive issues can have long-term effects, including chronic inflammation, organ damage, weakened immunity, skin conditions, behavioural problems, and reduced longevity.

What to watch out for

The Dog Grooming Diary Sarah Hoggarth has over twenty years of dog grooming experience and caring for animals has been both her passion and profession for most of her adult life. After running her own grooming salon and spending the last six years building a successful mobile grooming business, moving to Llansantffraid felt like the perfect opportunity for her to create something special in a place where Sarah and partner, Paul, had fallen in love with.

Oswestry Photographic Society wins Nine-Town Photographic Competition Oswestry Photographic Society (OPS) are the proud winners of this year’s Nine Towns Interclub Photographic Competition. Each year, photographic societies from Oswestry, Shrewsbury, Whitchurch, Newport, Stourport, Longmynd, Kidderminster, Bridgenorth and Ludlow compete against one another for a place in this friendly interclub competition. Although OPS have regularly been highly placed in this competition, winning this year gives them good reason to celebrate as 2026 also marks the 70th anniversary of the society. The inaugural meeting of OPS was held at the Bell Hotel in Oswestry on 4 May 1956 under the original name of the Oswestry and District Photographic Society.

Since its foundation in 1956, OPS has continued to meet regularly and provide a varied programme for their members including illustrated talks by well-known national and international photographers, regular photoshoots and practical events together with a range of competitions.

Photography provides a fulfilling and rewarding way to relax, record our interests in art, nature and the wonderful landscapes around as well as providing an opportunity to socialise and learn how to improve skills with others who have similar interests. Law firm gets behind women’s cricket festival in Oswestry A summer of cricket is underway in Oswestry with a special festival celebrating women’s cricket, community and culture - and local law firm Lanyon Bowdler is proud to be a supporter.

The Oswestry Women and Girls Festival of Cricket, Culture & Community took place at Oswestry Cricket Club on Saturday 5 July, bringing together players, families and cricket fans for a day of sport and entertainment.

Hosted at the club’s Stonehouse Oval ground on Morda Road, the festival featured women and girls taking part in softball cricket during the morning, before attention turned to the Women’s T20 World Cup Final at Lord’s being shown live on a big screen.

There were also plenty of family-friendly activities throughout the day, making it an event for everyone - from cricket enthusiasts to those simply looking for something different to enjoy with family and friends.

Kate Lawson, of Lanyon Bowdler’s Oswestry office, said the firm was delighted to support an event which celebrated both sporting achievement and community spirit.

“Women’s cricket is growing rapidly, and Oswestry Cricket Club has been at the forefront of that growth locally,” she said.

“The Women and Girls section have enjoyed a very

successful run in recent years, winning both County Hardball and County Softball league titles and being named Cricket Shropshire’s Women’s Team of the Year.

“We’re thrilled to sponsor the festival and help to showcase the opportunities available for women and girls to get involved in the sport.”

Jools Payne, team manager of Oswestry WaGs, said support from local businesses was vital to the success of events such as the festival.

WHAT SHOULD YOU DO IN THE TEN YEARS BEFORE RETIREMENT? You may not have a date circled on the calendar just yet – but if retirement is somewhere on the horizon, the decade before it matters more than most people realise.

These years are, for many, the most financially significant of their lives. Earnings are often at their peak, mortgages are shrinking or gone, and there’s a real opportunity to consolidate and shape what the next chapter looks like. What to do if you have mirror Wills and one spouse dies Q: My wealthy neighbours, both in their nineties, made Wills years ago, leaving everything to each other and naming each other as sole executors.

The husband had no children, but the wife had a granddaughter. The wife died recently, so her husband inherited everything and her granddaughter got nothing.

The husband says he is going to give his step granddaughter some money, but I have tried to explain this could cause tax implications if it’s more than £3,000, and instead he should make a new Will naming her as a beneficiary. Also, if he dies without making a new Will, everything he leaves could go to his wealthy brother. Can you please confirm this?

A: You are correct. As his sole beneficiary is no longer alive, your neighbour’s current Will is obsolete, unless he had a back-up provision to cover the eventuality of his wife predeceasing him. If not, then without making a new Will he would die intestate, and under intestacy rules his estate would pass to his next of kin, namely his brother. If he has more than one sibling, the estate would be split equally between them. He will also need to appoint a new executor(s). If one of his siblings dies or has died, the deceased sibling’s share would pass in equal shares to their children. “Children” includes legally adopted children as well as offspring but not step-children or foster children.

With regard to gifting money now, everyone is entitled to a gift tax exemption of £3,000 per year. Thinking you can get away with gifting more than that is unadvisable as the executors of a Will are legally responsible for disclosing gifts made by the deceased in the final seven years prior to their death. You are, however, allowed to make any number of small gifts worth up to £250 per year, to any number of people, on top of the £3,000.

Your neighbour should see a solicitor as soon as possible to draw up a new Will that fully reflects his wishes for estate distribution.

Keep the layout clear of busy pathways or steps. Locating the kitchen close to the house will usually keep installation costs down, particularly when connecting services.

The Five Minute Jobs

When I first took on an allotment, I assumed the hard work would be the digging.

I was wrong.

The hard work is the endless collection of “five-minute jobs.”

Every visit to the allotment starts with the best intentions - “I’ll just pop up and tie the peas in.”

Which is allotment code for: “I’ll be home at some point this afternoon, probably muddy, confused and carrying jobs I didn’t know existed this morning.”

Five minutes later I’m noticing weeds around the strawberries. While dealing with those, I remember I need to finish building the pumpkin arch.

Before I know it, two hours have disappeared and the peas still haven’t been tied in.

June is the month when everything suddenly seems to

need something. The sweetcorn is planted, the tomatoes are growing, the peas are racing skywards, and the pumpkins are waiting impatiently for me to finish the accommodation I’ve promised them.

The irony is that after spending months willing plants to grow, they finally do exactly what you’ve asked.

Just considerably faster than expected.

One lesson I’ve learned is that often is the secret. Five minutes tying in peas today saves half an hour of untangling tomorrow. A quick weed while passing a bed is far easier than tackling a miniature jungle a fortnight later.

Of course, this advice would be far more convincing if I actually followed it myself.

Instead, I continue to spend my allotment visits getting distracted by unfinished projects, new ideas and

plants that appear to have doubled in size since my last visit.

If you’re feeling similarly overwhelmed at this point in the season, my advice is simple: don’t try to do everything. Focus on keeping plants watered, supported and weedfree. The grand plans can wait.

After all, a year ago I was staring at an overgrown plot wondering if anything would ever grow there. It’s now productive, slightly chaotic, and permanently one unfinished project away from being complete.

Explore Blooming Gardens, Tea Rooms and Thriving Wildlife in Powys Summer finally arrived in a blaze of sunshine at the end of May, prompting an explosion of colour as weigelia and azaleas took over from the faded blooms of lilac and wisteria. There must be well over a hundred rosebuds on my climbing rose ‘Claire Austin’. So much to look forward to in the garden this summer!

We have an eclectic selection of gardens for you to visit here in North Powys this July. A new opener for us this year is Vicarage Farm, Llangynog (SY10 0HG).

Surrounded by the stunning views of the Pennant Valley, an acre of land has been converted into a large mixed garden using no pesticides, encouraging bees and butterflies to thrive. A short drive away is the enchanting church of St Melangell, with its atmospheric shrine and fascinating history. As a complete contrast, 1 Church Bank, Welshpool (SY21 7DR) is open the same weekend.

This intimate town garden is full of unusual features where sounds of water fill the air. Both open Saturday 4 and Sunday 5, 12-5pm, with homemade teas available.

On Sunday 12 July, Eve’s Garden near Llansantfraidd

(SY22 6TB) will be opening 11am-5pm. Vibrant borders packed with colour surround the house throughout the summer. There are level paths suitable for wheelchair users. Homemade teas. The owners of all three of these gardens also open their gardens by arrangement for groups from July to September: please go to www.ngs.org.uk for booking details.

Another new opener for the National Garden Scheme is Llanfechain Village (SY22 6UQ). Open Sunday 26 July 11am-4pm, this beautiful historic village is in a glorious setting on the River Cain. Seven very different gardens, including the school community garden, will be showing what can be done with gardens ranging in size from courtyard to almost an acre. Although there is partial wheelchair access, the gardens are spread over a wide area (maps provided!). Admission £6 (children free). Homemade teas in the village hall.

July is when the garden begins to reward those months of effort, with borders full of colour and crops arriving.

But while it is a month to enjoy, it is also one not to neglect — there is still plenty to keep you busy outdoors every day.

Deadheading may be time-consuming, but it remains one of summer’s most satisfying tasks. It lets you admire what is thriving while keeping a close watch for pests. Removing faded blooms encourages plants to channel their energy into fresh growth and more flowers rather than seed. Snip just below the flower or pinch off spent blooms where possible. But leave some seed heads behind for wildlife, especially sunflowers, and remember to keep the bird-bath topped up during dry spells.

In hot weather, watering becomes a priority, especially for containers. Water well, but avoid the hottest part of the day, when moisture evaporates quickly and leaves may scorch. Rainwater is best if available, and regular liquid feeding helps once compost nutrients begin to run low. Do not overdo it, though: roots will suffer in waterlogged pots, so make sure drainage holes stay clear. If you are going away, ask someone to water and

move pots into light shade if you can, to reduce stress and keep plants looking healthy.

The vegetable plot should now be in full swing. Pick runner beans, french beans, cucumbers and courgettes regularly to keep plants productive, and harvest early for the best flavour. Broad beans are best before they grow too large, and courgettes can quickly become marrows if left too long. Stay alert for trouble too: check brassicas for cabbage white eggs and caterpillars, and gooseberries for sawfly larvae before serious damage is done. A few minutes of daily attention now will save frustration later and help keep crops coming through the heart of summer.

Above all, take time to enjoy it all.
