• Chocolate was once used as currency.

Croesoswallt Archers Hold Prestigious Event

On 31st May 2025, after an eight-year hiatus, the prestigious Silver Dollar Tournament returned to Croesoswallt Archers. Originally established in 1960 by North Wales Archery Society, this UK Record Status Double American event was held annually for 57 consecutive years before its last iteration in 2017. The event features the challenging Double American round, where archers shoot 30 arrows at distances of 60, 50, and 40 yards. This sequence is completed twice, creating two full American Rounds and testing competitors’ precision, consistency, and skill across varying distances.

37 archers from around the country gathered on a particularly windy Saturday morning to begin shooting. It was a fantastic day enjoyed by everyone in attendance - not only the archers but also the

dedicated volunteers from the club who had spent months preparing for the event and had set up the field to a professional standard.

Four archers were able to claim eight UK Status records at the event.

Rod Mitchell (Bowbrook Archers) shooting in the Barebow division, secured the records for:

Oswestry Community Games

Despite a little light rain, the twelfth Oswestry Community Games more than met organisers’ expectations and around 1000 people of all ages attended through the day to enjoy free activities in Cae Glas Park provided by diverse local organisations covering sport, dance and other activities. The live music was again provided by Bartells.

James Manford – Lead Organiser said, “It was a delight to be in our beautiful park today again and seeing so many activities going on. Many thanks go to our local sponsors –

Oswestry Town Council, Oswestry BID, Oswestry Sports Forum, Bunning Gas, DRE Accountants, Perspective Finance group, Oswestry Lions and Oswestry Life who make this event possible. Thank you to all our club volunteers who have given their time today so willingly, Kelda Wood-our Guest of Honour, and David Davies- MC.

Radford, Town Crier Phil Brown and to Sue Cameron Head Park Keeper and her team for making the park again look so good. Last but not least, my thanks go to my colleagues Kelly Clarke and Clive Knight, who work tirelessly throughout the year to help me make this great community event happen.”

At the closing ceremony, Border Counties School of Gymnastics provided a number of spectacular performances. Oswestry Town Council Mayor Rosie Radford thanked everyone for their support especially the volunteers and organisers, and how she had enjoyed taking part in many activities on offer. Kelda Wood made an inspiring speech, including advice for everyone to take advantage of all the opportunities that we have locally to improve our physical and mental health. Phil Brown Town Crier then closed the Games with his verse and inimitable style!

Contemporary Fine Art Textiles Exhibition

5th July - 30th August 2025, The Willow Gallery, Oswestry

Stitch by Stitch 2025 is more than an exhibition—it is a celebration of the rich and evolving world of textile art. Curated by local textile artists Suzette Smart and Alison Holt, this remarkable showcase brings together the talents of both established and emerging artists, each exploring the endless possibilities of stitch, fabric, and mixed media.

The exhibition demonstrates how textiles have transcended traditional boundaries to firmly claim their place within the realm of fine art. Featuring nationally and internationally recognized artists, the exhibition offers a compelling reflection of current themes, contemporary explorations, and a high standard of craftsmanship. Every piece speaks to a commitment to concept, technique, and creativity, challenging perceptions and inspiring a deeper appreciation for textiles as a powerful, dynamic medium.

We invite you to journey through these works, each one stitched not only with thread, but with imagination, passion, and the enduring spirit of artistic innovation.

Strictly superstar Alice wins trophy of her own

Derwen College student Alice Glennon has been recognised with a prestigious national award for her outstanding work promoting Makaton signing in the mainstream media.

Alice, aged 19, a residential student at the Derwen college, has been named a winner in the Advocacy, Policy and Media category of the Learning Disability and Autism Leaders’ Awards 2025. The awards, hosted by Dimensions UK, celebrate individuals with learning disabilities and autism who are breaking down

barriers and making a positive impact in their communities.

According to judges, Alice stood out for her passionate and consistent advocacy of Makaton – a communication programme that combines signs, symbols and speech to support people with learning difficulties and communication needs. Her campaigning, particularly around encouraging the use of inclusive signing on BBC’s ‘Strictly Come Dancing’, has had national reach and real impact.

Group for German Speakers

A vibrant group of German speakers in Oswestry now have their own mini bookshop, thanks to the Age UK shop in the town.

Said Ali Tickner, one of the organisers of the group, “Our group is all about using and promoting the German language and between us we had a wide range of fiction and non-fiction books. By donating them to Age UK there’s a joint benefit that the charity can raise vital funds for its important work and the local German-speaking community has access to good quality, “preiswert” reading material on the high street.

“We meet every couple of weeks in the Willow Gallery café socially and members come from Wales, Shrewsbury as well as Oswestry – all German speakers are welcome.”

As well as its regular café meetings, members of the group known as Stammtisch Oswestry, undertake a variety of activities and over the years have enjoyed walks, evening meals locally and visits to the Attfield Theatre and the cinema.

German is the most requested language in job adverts and with over 97 million speakers, is the first language spoken most by people in Europe.

The Age UK shop is at 34 Bailey Street and is open Monday-Saturday 9:0017:00 and Sunday 10:00-16:00. German speakers can join Stammtisch Oswestry on Facebook - https://www.facebook. com/groups/stammtischoswestry

Success for British Red Cross and Shropshire Rural Support Fundraiser

Local community needs were very much top of top of mind at a summer drinks party at Woodhill Park Estate near Oswestry. The sun just about came out in time for the opening of the newly restored Walled Garden, Sundial Walk, Jasmine Courtyard and Veterans’ Garden, to raise money for the British Red Cross and Shropshire Rural Support.

“Gardening is the only time I look forward to time passing,” said owner Syrie Johnson. “I can’t wait to see the new orchard in a couple of years with its English heritage apples, plums, pears, cherries and walnuts.”

Jane Trowbridge, The High Sheriff of Shropshire said, “The evening is a lovely way to raise funds for two very important charities which provide essential support and help when it is most needed to our largely rural community.”

Our local British Red Cross delivers crucial support to individuals and communities within Shropshire, such as victims of fire and flooding and the elderly returning home from hospital. Shropshire Rural Support provides much needed 24/7 support with both a telephone and text service for local farmers, their families and those in the rural community who need help at

times of stress, isolation or difficulty. Its free confidential service is delivered by trained volunteers with a deep understanding of the countryside, farming and its inherent problems.

The party was attended by Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Shropshire Anna Turner, Deputy Lieutenant Veronica Lillis and former High Sheriff of Shropshire Charles Lillis. Other guests included Rupert and Harriet Harvey, Neil Mainwaring and former High Sheriff of Cheshire Sarah Callander Beckett and Peter Callander Beckett.

Guests enjoyed champagne, wine and delicious canapés cooked by the BRC and SRS committees. Raffle prizes were kindly donated by the Derwen Garden Centre, Meraki Colour and Henstone Distillery. The next open gardens at Woodhill Park Estate will be on August 9th, when The Duke’s Theatre Company will perform Macbeth.

Paws for thought

THE SIGNIFICANCE OF A YAWN

Unlike humans, yawning doesn’t usually mean your dog is tired. In dogs, yawning can indicate a number of things.

Medical Problems

It’s not unheard of for dogs to yawn when they have an ear problem or some sort of pain in their jaw. Some dogs may yawn and lick their lips or yawn and swallow.

BRINGING YOU THE

Whether you are already a seasoned raw feeder or interested in switching your animals to a raw diet then we have everything you need and much more.

As well as our large range of top quality raw minces, chunks and bones we also supply air dried chews and natural treats as well as herbal supplements to complement a natural diet.

SOME OF THE BENEFITS OF RAW FEEDING:

■ Less Sensitivities ■ Great for allergy sufferers

■ Smaller less odorous poop ■ Clean teeth & breath

■ Shiny healthy coat

In some cases, yawning may stem from nausea, or some type of ongoing issue affecting the dog’s throat/ esophagus region, either caused by acid reflux, or a case of laryngeal paralysis.

Stressful Situations

Yawning is often a sign your dog feels stressed/nervous. The yawn may have a calming effect.

Examples:

When you hug or pick up your dog

When somebody looms over him

When you scold or stare at your dog

When you get close to take photographs

Visiting the vet

When he is approached abruptly and directly

When your dog is exposed to a tense and loud disagreement/noise

Calming Signal

Dogs may yawn to pacify or demonstrate he’s not a threat to others, such as when a dog growls or barks at your dog, and your dog moves away and yawns, or if your dog/ puppy meets a new dog.

Anticipation

Dogs may yawn when they are excited to engage in an activity they look forward to, eg feeding time or play time. Yawning is the dog’s way of controlling his enthusiasm.

Confusion

Sometimes dogs use yawning as a way of buying time to decide their next move when dealing with choices, inner conflict or to displace their stress. Eg your dog wants to greet another dog, but he’s tied up, so he yawns instead.

Attachment

If you yawn and your dog copies, it is believed this is down to a deep, shared connection.

Dogs yawn in different contexts and situations. Paying attention to your dog’s behavior is important so you can make necessary changes to make your relationship and bond better than before.

Get Ready for an Unmissable Day at Oswestry Show 2025

This year marks the 138th Oswestry Show, but back in its infancy, the show wasn’t as we know it now with thousands of visitors, many members of the farming community and associated businesses attending. In fact, it was much more modest in size with a small number of farmers and supporters.

The History

The Oswestry Show’s roots stretch back to 3 October 1862, when the town hosted its first agricultural exhibition at the Smithfield cattle market. Although initially met with caution with local farmers hesitating to take the first step, the push came from an outsider, Mr. H. M. Aldham of Worcestershire. With the backing of influential landowners like John Ralph Ormsby Gore MP, the Oswestry & District Agricultural Society was born.

Its founders aimed to boost local farming, improve food quality and quantity, and better the lives of farm workers. Early shows focused solely on agriculture, a chance for farmers to showcase livestock, exchange ideas, and see the latest machinery.

The timing couldn’t have been better. The 1860s saw a booming local economy, aided by the expansion of the railways and a flourishing agricultural sector. On the inaugural show day, 1,500 visitors crowded the town, marvelling at livestock, farm equipment, and novelties like a traveling steam engine. The day closed with a grand dinner at the Wynnstay Arms Hotel.

Against the odds, what began with cautious optimism has endured. Over 160 years and countless changes later, the Oswestry Show remains a proud celebration of agriculture, rural life, and community spirit.

Every year, The Oswestry Show has a motivated team bringing everything together and this year the President is Nigel Williams, Managing Director of Arthurs Motor Group.

Did you know the Oswestry show has been held in various parts of town through the years?

The show’s first event in 1862 was held at the Smithfield Cattle Market. In subsequent years, the show was held in areas, in and around Oswestry spots you might be familiar with: Brogyntyn Park (1925, 1931), the athletics ground in Ellesmere (1926), Red House Field, Middleton Road (1927), The Llys, Middleton Road (1928, 1930), Oak drive (1947), Mile End (1953-1976, 1979-1981), Park Hall Camp (1977-1978), Park Hall Showground (1982 onwards).

Saturday 2 August, Park Hall Showground

On Saturday 2 August 2025, the 138th Oswestry Show is set to return and it’s bigger and better than ever! As one of the country’s leading oneday agricultural shows, it draws more than 15,000 visitors each year and showcases the very best in farming, rural life, and family entertainment. With over 120 trade stands, there’s something for everyone,

whether you’re looking for rural crafts, local produce, or the latest farming innovations. Our main sponsor this year is ABP Food Group, renowned for working closely with farmers and championing sustainability in agriculture.

The action-packed day features breathtaking main ring entertainment. Hold onto your hats for Paul Hannam’s high-octane stunt show, the UK’s only quad bike multiple roll-over and be amazed by the fast-paced thrills of the British Scurry Racing Team.

Elsewhere, the Village Green will be buzzing with cheerleading and gymnastics displays, while the Livestock Area promises an

impressive line-up of cattle, sheep, pigs, and rare breeds including the Charmoise Hill Sheep Society National Show and the ever-popular sheep shearing competitions.

Don’t miss the stunning displays in the Horticultural Marquee, the fascinating Vintage Section with classic cars, motorbikes, and tractors, or a ride on the Model Railway courtesy of the Oswestry Model Engineering Society.

Add in food halls bursting with local flavours, craft and shopping marquees, and entertainment for all ages, and you’ve got a day that’s not to be missed.

Gates open at 8.30am with free parking and a park-andride service from town. Dogs on leads are welcome, and facilities are available for families and disabled visitors.

Mark your calendars because Oswestry Show 2025 is a must-visit for a fantastic family day out!

OF THE MONTH JULY 2025

SISU (15)

AVAILABLE TO STREAM ON NETFLIX.

It’s ‘Fin-diana Jones’ in this month’s pick, an incredibly fun and pulpy (in all senses) Finnish WW2 action film from 2022.

In late 1944 lone prospector Ataami is beavering away in Lapland when he literally strikes gold.  Unearthing a large nugget, he sets off with his faithful dog, soon running into a retreating SS platoon keen to relieve him of his find.

Unfortunately for them Ataami is a near mythical soldier who lost his family during the invasion of Finland and is not about to lose anything else to the Nazis.  Cue a series of violently enjoyable set pieces, each more outlandish than the last, as Ataami fights, shoots, swims and flies his way to victory.  Fans of ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’ will be right at home with this super classy B Movie.

Night Is Film Night in Oswestry - for the time being

The Oswestry Film Society is ready to move from Hermon Chapel Arts into the new Maona cinema which, fingers crossed, should be opening its doors at the old Kinokulture building early this month.

Tatenda Jamera from Maona Art recently addressed the OFS audience with newly appointed cinema manager Holly Maries to share more of his plans for bringing regular film screenings back to the town. He explained that the legal side of

things had slowed progress towards this point, but he’s looking forward to showing films Thursday-Sunday, with a varied mix from blockbusters to classics, foreign offerings to children’s films - and to bringing the popular National Theatre Live events back to Oswestry.

He paid tribute to the Film Society keeping film nights going and has asked them to be involved in the programming schedule.

CHILDREN’S BOOK REVIEW

Frank the Pizza

Review by Erin - Book Worms

Frank the Pizza is about someone trying to fit in but not being able to because they are different.  I thought this was a heartwarming book. I loved this book because it’s funny and all about friendship. The book is set at a kid’s party. The main characters are Frank the Pizza and Francis the Cupcake. When they go to a party, they experiment with different toppings like BBQ chips and marshmallows. I would recommend this book to aged 7 and under. I give it five stars!

To get involved in selecting the Children’s Choice, sign up for one of Booka Bookshop’s Junior Book Clubs. Book Mice is for 7+ and meets on the 3rd Monday of every month. POETRY

Wilfred Owen

Stand still, stroke his statue, the Poet in the Park, he won’t feel your hand now or hear a blithe remark.

Consider - his hand shielded you and though the Soldier’s gone, the verses which that same hand wrote

prove the Poet still lives on.

like to pay a special thank you to the Hermon, which has been such a welcoming and friendly venue for us, but now we look forward to an exciting new chapter in Oswestry cinema. Do check our website www. oswestryfilmsociety.com for updates - we will share more as we know it, and we’ll be having a celebratory night for our last showing at the Hermon,” which provisionally is the recent and well-rated comedy-drama Fly Me To The Moon.

Your Dream Barn Wedding is in Oswestry

There’s something magical about Bromwich Park Farm Weddings that no amount of pictures can capture… it’s the kind of place you have to experience for yourself. Set in the Shropshire countryside, just a short drive from Oswestry, Bromwich Park offers an unmistakable charm that feels like it’s been waiting just for you. Owned by Nicholas and Julian, who lovingly transformed the farm, that has been in Julian’s family since 1921, after hosting their own wedding there. The venue has grown into a warm, welcoming space where every celebration feels personal, heartfelt and entirely one of a kind.

Imagine your wedding unfolding in the middle of 300 acres of open farmland, surrounded by the quiet beauty of rolling fields and a peaceful canal. You have the freedom to create a day that mirrors who you are as a couple, whether that’s a barefoot outdoor ceremony under the trees, a rustic-chic gathering inside the charming Cow Barn, or a full-blown festival weekend with music, laughter, and the kind of memories that only happen when the whole party is camping under the stars. Bromwich Park Farm Weddings welcomes you and says, “make it yours.”

And that’s exactly what couples do. With spacious barns, a cosy stable and lush courtyard gardens licensed for ceremonies, and quirky spaces

like the Milking Parlour, a hidden gem that transforms late-night dancing into a magical party your guests will talk about for years, every inch of Bromwich Park feels thoughtfully designed without being over-polished. It’s rustic, yes, but not rough around the edges; there’s a laid-back elegance here that manages to be both downto-earth and impossibly charming.

To make the weekend even more special, the on-site Granary Cottage offers a cosy, stylish retreat for up to four people, complete with original oak beams, a four-poster bed, and a private patio that looks out over the fields. It’s the perfect spot to wake up slowly on the morning of your wedding or slip away to when you need a quiet moment together once the festivities are in full swing.

One of Bromwich Park’s greatest strengths is that it never feels like a “venue.” Instead, it feels like being invited into someone’s home…someone who just happens to know exactly how to throw the best party of your life.

Nicholas and Julian aren’t just there to unlock the doors; they’re hands-on, offering guidance and sharing their years of experience of hosting parties, restaurants, festivals and weddings when you want it, disappearing into the background when you don’t and always making sure the day unfolds exactly the way you pictured it.

With a location that’s blissfully rural but still within reach of Liverpool, Manchester, and Birmingham, Bromwich Park is a true hidden gem, a place where couples come not just to get married, but to celebrate in a way that feels authentic, joyful, and uniquely theirs.

If you’ve been searching for a wedding venue that’s equal parts beautiful, relaxed, and a little bit extraordinary, Bromwich Park Farm Weddings might just be where your story starts.

For more information on prices and availability, visit bromwichpark. com, email nicholas@bromwichpark. com or call 07808 297161.

Apple and ginger sorbet

Keep your cool when the heat is on with this oh-so-refreshing sorbet. If you don’t have a high-powered blender, you can use an ice-cream machine instead.

Ingred I ents

• 6 Granny Smith apples, peeled then grated coarsely and cores discarded

• 1 lemon, halved

• 6cm piece of ginger, peeled and cut into matchsticks

• 225ml boiling water

• 225g caster sugar

• 1 tsp finely grated fresh ginger

• 4 tbsp chopped hazelnuts

• Honey or maple syrup, to serve

Recipe extracted from ‘LEON: Big

method

1. Line a small baking tray with non-stick baking paper, letting the paper overhang the sides.

2. Place the apple in a bowl, squeeze over a little lemon juice and toss to coat. Tip into the prepared tray and spread out thinly. Cover with another sheet of baking paper, then weigh it down with a board or a couple of small plates. Transfer to the freezer for 3 hours.

3. Meanwhile, place the ginger matchsticks and boiling water in a heatproof jug and set aside to infuse.

4. Allow the frozen apple to soften for about 15 minutes, then spoon it into a powerful blender and discard the baking paper. Strain the ginger infusion, discarding the matchsticks. Add the sugar to the liquid, stirring until completely dissolved, then pour into the blender with the grated ginger. Blitz until completely smooth.

5. Pour back into the baking tray and return to the freezer for 1 hour. Rough up the mixture with a fork and return it to the freezer for 3 hours. Allow to soften for about 15 minutes, then scrape it out of the tray, breaking it up, and into the blender again. Taste, adding more lemon juice if too sweet. Blitz again until smooth, then scrape into a lidded container and freeze completely.

6. When ready to serve, allow the sorbet to soften slightly for 15-20 minutes. Meanwhile, place the hazelnuts in a small, dry pan over a medium heat and toast, stirring often, until they are fragrant. Remove from the heat and quickly pour in the honey or maple syrup and stir to coat.

7. Serve the sorbet scattered with the sticky hazelnuts.

Year 6 is the New Year 7: A New Chapter at Ellesmere College

In years gone by, the phrase “big school” was synonymous with Year 7 — the moment pupils left behind the primary classroom and stepped into a world of secondary education with science labs, lockers, subject specialist and a more demanding academic curriculum. But at Ellesmere College, the landscape is changing. Increasingly, Year 6 has become the new gateway into that world — a carefully designed bridge that introduces the breadth and depth of senior school life, without forcing children to grow up too fast.

At Ellesmere, the Year 6 experience is being redefined. It’s more than just the final year of Junior School; it’s an opportunity for pupils to begin exploring the wider academic landscape — from science experiments conducted in real laboratories to the introduction of Classics and Latin, taught by subject specialists. These experiences don’t just build knowledge; they ignite curiosity and enthusiasm for learning, key ingredients for long-term academic success.

The structure of the curriculum reflects this shift. Year 6 pupils at Ellesmere are given a taste of what’s to come, while still benefitting from the nurturing, tailored environment of the Lower School. They are encouraged to take on greater independence, with timetabled lessons across a range of subjects and increased interaction with senior staff, but they do so in a context where support and personal development remain front and centre.

What’s unique at Ellesmere is that many of these subject specialist teachers work with pupils all the way from Year 6 through to Year 13. This continuity means relationships are built over time, allowing staff to develop a deep understanding of each child’s strengths, interests and learning style. It creates a clear pathway for unlocking potential — not through pressure, but through knowing and nurturing the individual. One of the most valuable aspects of this approach is the balance it strikes. Pupils are stretched academically and introduced to new concepts and disciplines, but not

at the expense of their childhood. There is no rush to “grow up”; instead, there is space to grow into oneself — to develop confidence, resilience and curiosity within a safe and supportive community. Social and emotional development are not side-lined; they are nurtured with the same care as academic progress.

The benefits of this early immersion become most apparent as pupils approach the transition to Senior School, which at Ellesmere begins in Year 9. By the time they reach that point, students are not stepping into the unknown. They are moving forward along a path they have already begun to navigate. The systems, subjects and staff are familiar. The learning culture feels like home. That familiarity fosters confidence and that confidence breeds momentum.

In fact, what we increasingly see is that pupils who start their Ellesmere journey in Year 6 (or earlier) not only adjust more seamlessly into Senior School life — they thrive. The foundations laid in those earlier years allow them to accelerate academically in Year 9 and beyond, not through pressure, but through a genuine love of learning and sense of purpose. They understand the rhythm of school life, they feel a part of the wider school community and they have already begun to explore where their interests and strengths might take them.

There is also something to be said for continuity. In a world where educational transitions can be a source of stress and disruption, Ellesmere offers a sense of continuity that is both rare and powerful. Year 6 is not a standalone moment; it is part of a coherent, long-term journey that prioritises both academic excellence and personal wellbeing.

In short, Year 6 at Ellesmere College is no longer a waiting room before “big school” begins. It is big school — but thoughtfully and age-appropriately designed. It offers the very best of both worlds: the breadth and excitement of senior school learning and the care and support that young learners need to flourish.

Focus on…July

Following on from my picture last month, I have chosen a few favourites from July 2024. It reminds me that we had a poor summer last year. Let’s hope we have some good sunshine this year.

Building a better community together

Welcome

As we welcome a new civic year, it is time to meet the new Mayor of Oswestry cllr Rosie Radford, to look back at some successes over the last year and to celebrate the amazing town we are lucky enough to call home.

We have plenty of stories that showcase what makes Oswestry so great as well as updates on key council projects and services including the restoration of Llwyd Mansion, pictured.

On pages 6 and 7, you will find a list of the services provided by us and by Shropshire Council plus details of your local councillors with photos and contact information. Do get in touch with your local councillor if you have a community concern.

Meet your new mayor

Cllr Rosie Radford was officially appointed as Mayor of Oswestry at a special ceremony on 19 May and will serve as First Citizen for 2025-26.

Rosie brings her love for Oswestry and a long-standing dedication to public service to this prestigious role. She has lived here for 34 years and has become deeply involved in civic life.

Elected to represent Cambrian Ward as councillor in 2018, Rosie has also served as Chair of the Markets and Town Centre Committee, bringing her experience of a market trader and business owner to her work and leading initiatives to revitalise the town centre and support local businesses.

In addition to her civic roles, Rosie has worked in the NHS for 18 years and volunteers with local food-sharing causes that help reduce food waste while nourishing our community.

During her time in office, Rosie hopes to shine a spotlight on the many groups and volunteers who improve life for others. She is also keen on improving transport options for more sustainable and accessible travel between local towns.

She said: “My hope is that I can continue to contribute to the wonderful, vibrant community I will be representing. I want to shout about Oswestry and help make it an even better place for my daughters and the next generation of families and communities here.”

If you would like to extend an invitation for an event you have coming up, please email: sandratrevor@oswestry-tc.gov.uk

Well wishes from outgoing mayor

Describing his time as mayor as “the honour of my life”, Mike Isherwood wishes Rosie all the best as she takes over.

He said: “I have had a thoroughly enjoyable year visiting organisations, charities, groups and individuals who help make our town so special. My thanks to them for all they do. Good luck Rosie.”

COMMUNITY & COUNCIL NEWS

Men Walking and Talking win award

Celebrating local heroes

Oswestry’s Civic Awards recognise and celebrate individuals, groups and businesses making a difference in our communities.

This year’s winners were announced at a special event in March marking the end of Mike Isherwood’s time as Mayor of Oswestry:

Oswestry Climate Hub was the winner of the Environmental Champions award for helping people live more sustainably.

Men Walking and Talking won the Outstanding Community Project award for their mental health walks that bring men together in safe spaces.

The Outstanding Oswestry Business award was won by The Bailey Head adding to its growing list of accolades which includes Pub of the Year.

SYA (Shropshire Youth Association) won the Outstanding Contribution to Supporting Oswestry’s Young People award for their school holiday clubs which encourage creativity, teamwork and personal development. Congratulations to you all.

Investing in young people

We want children and young people to get the most out of growing up in Oswestry. Their voices and views are at the heart of all we do to improve youth services.

As well as championing young people through Oswestry Youth Forum and Oswestry Youth Music Festival, we have also funded the youth club at The Centre, SYA Time to Talk sessions at The Marches School, and a varied programme of school holiday activities including bushcraft skills and tai chi.

Future of community centre secured

After two years of lengthy discussion, in September, we took over The Centre on Oak Street from Shropshire Council to secure its future as a community hub and provide a secure base for OsNosh, SYA, St John Ambulance and others. It will be run by TNSFC Foundation.

National accreditation for Oswestry Archives

Our archive service has been awarded national accredited status from The National Archives for a second time for the conservation and care of the town’s unique archives and its accessibility.

Joining Oswestry Youth Forum is fantastic for meeting new friends and gaining new skills. Anyone aged 11-17 can join. For details, email: corriedavies@oswestry-tc.gov.uk

Based at the Guildhall in the heart of Oswestry, the archives house a fascinating collection of records that document the development of our town. The oldest document dated 1324, is a grant by the Earl of Arundel of two shops to the Burgesses of Oswestry. If you would like to find out more email: enquiries@oswestry-tc.gov.uk

One of the best

In February, we were thrilled to hear that we were runner-up for the title of ‘Council of the Year’ at the NALC Star Council Awards. Although we didn’t win, getting to the shortlist was a fantastic achievement as there are more than 10,000 parish and town councils in the country. The judges were particularly impressed by the work we do to support the town’s young people.

The Cross returns home

The Cross memorial was restored to its original place on the corner of Cross Street in December. The restoration was needed after a serious collision in May 2023 which caused extensive damage to the memorial and injured three people, one seriously.

Supporting communities

Four more businesses have benefited from grants of £5,000 to support their growth and bring empty town centre properties back into use – Shroom, Smithfield Coffee House, The Beech Tree and Beauty Base. Amber and Jolyon Iles at The Beech Tree described the grant as “a real boost”.

Community groups also received grants including Oswestry SEN Parents and Children’s Group, County Counselling, The Cuddle Collective, The Drama Forge, Music MOB, Oswestry Society of Church Bell Ringers, Shrewsbury & Oswestry Crucial Crew, Oswestry Team Tennis and Lights Out Trefonen.

ENVIRONMENT MATTERS

Climate action

Seven years ago, Oswestry Town Council declared a climate emergency and committed to becoming carbon neutral by 2030, and we’re currently on track to achieve this.

As well as eco improvements to the Guildhall and other council-owned facilities, we have introduced new planting schemes in our parks to increase biodiversity and planted 17,000 trees – one for every resident in the borough!

Projects for this year include reducing mowing where it is practical to do so and upgrading our streetlights to LEDs which use less energy.

Cae Glas Park – a jewel in our crown

An area of outstanding beauty in the heart of town, Cae Glas Park is popular with locals and visitors alike.

Seven acres of beautifully maintained parkland with established trees and shrubbery, stunning floral displays, children’s play area, bowling green, crazy golf, tennis, bandstand and regular community events are just some of its attractions.

A new free-to-play all weather table tennis table is the latest addition to arrive in the park.

Whilst the cost of looking after the park for our community is considerable, we hope you agree it’s worth it.

Blooming success

Oswestry in Bloom volunteers work alongside our small parks team to keep Oswestry blooming lovely.

Having won our 19th Gold at last year’s Heart of England in Bloom competition and scooping a special award for Best Large town, Oswestry has been selected to represent the region in this year’s Britain in Bloom finals.

Teamwork is the secret of success, and our thanks go to the Oswestry in Bloom committee, volunteers and our team.

LLWYD MANSION RESTORATION

Lottery grant for restoration of Llwyd Mansion

Our bid for funding from The National Lottery Heritage Fund to support the restoration of Oswestry’s historic Llwyd Mansion has secured development funding of £479,972.

This funding will be used to cover the first phase of the project including urgent structural repairs, additional surveys and investigations, and a series of consultation events and activities for the community to be part of the restoration journey.

The development phase is expected to be completed by early 2027. A funding bid of £2,870,665 for the next phase will then be submitted to the Heritage Fund so that restoration work can begin. All being well, we expect most of the structural restoration will be completed by the end of 2028, with the building fully open towards the end of 2029.

Fact file:

• Llwyd Mansion was built in 1464/5 as a substantial merchant’s house around a possible earlier medieval hall house.

• The plaster roundel bearing the coat of arms of the Llwyd family with the date 1604, is believed to have been added during a later restoration in the 1800s.

• From the late 1880s until 2022, the building was in commercial use. Sadly, widespread structural alterations and repairs compounded by lack of maintenance over many years left the building in a dilapidated state and on the ‘Heritage at Risk’ list.

• In November 2023, Oswestry Town Council bought the building bringing it into public ownership for the first time in its history. Subsequent surveys revealed the extent and complexity of the restoration needed.

• A business plan to secure the future of the building and a bid for a Heritage Fund grant were prepared in 2024. Proposals look at improving access and services whilst respecting the heritage of the building and include community and commercial spaces on the lower floors and holiday let accommodation on upper floors.

Fitness Focus

Mental health affects us all and more people than ever are speaking up about it. I’m Callum, a Fitness Instructor and Personal Trainer at Coach House Fitness, and I want to talk about the powerful, positive impact staying active can have on your mental wellbeing.

In recent years, awareness of mental health has grown across the UK and rightly so. Here in Oswestry and beyond, more people are opening up about their experiences with anxiety, stress, and low mood. It’s estimated that 1 in 4 people in the UK experience a mental health issue each year, and after everything we’ve faced recently, it’s no surprise those numbers are rising. But here’s the good news…movement really can make a difference.

Staying active is one of the most effective and natural ways to support your mental health. Whether it’s a brisk walk through Cae Glas Park or joining a gym, moving

your body boosts endorphins (your brain’s natural moodlifters). Research shows just 30 minutes of moderate activity, five days a week, can reduce symptoms of depression by up to 30%.

Regular exercise can also improve sleep, lower stress hormones, and build confidence, which are all essential for a balanced, resilient mind. Even small actions, like stretching in the morning, walking to the shop, or doing a few bodyweight exercises, can build momentum and lift your spirits.

It’s not just about treadmills and kale, it’s about doing what makes your body feel stronger and your mind feel calmer. Most importantly, you don’t have to do it alone.

At Coach House Fitness, we’re here to support you every step of the way. Whether you’re looking to build a routine, gain confidence, or simply feel better in yourself, our team is ready to help. You’ll find expert guidance, a welcoming environment, and a community that genuinely cares.

Callum Woodcock
“Be part of the solution, not a part of the pollution” David Katz

There are many things we take for granted healthwise and the air around us is high up on the list. You can see dirty water: you usually can’t see dirty air. Unfortunately, you are breathing some level of “dirty air” most of the time. As I sit writing this Oswestry has an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 37 – and below 100 is good. However, if you live near a busy road, in a house with smokers or vapers, have a log burner or coal fire, live near an industrial area or a farm using certain fertilisers, use fragranced products in your house or have even redecorated with high VOC paint (volatile organic compounds) then your level may well be too high.

Why does it matter? I hear you ask. Air pollution is linked to heart and lung disease, worsening asthma, worsening of allergic reactions, dementia and adverse effects on pregnancy. Some of the smaller particles actually get into your

bloodstream! Pollution effects the elderly and the young so no-one is immune.

Your next question should be what should I do? A lot of these particles come from our choice of travel. Could you walk? What about a bike? If you must use the car then slow down, turn off the engine when idling, consider car sharing or even some form of electric vehicle. In the house try avoiding fragranced products, restrict your log or coal burning, reduce your exposure to smoking or vaping, choose low VOC paints and open windows more (but not if they face a road).

The message here is clear – we need to take clean air less for granted. The website cleanairhub. org.uk allows you to do a simple questionnaire that personalises a “Clean Air Plan” - give it a go! And don’t forget that while you’re improving you own health you might also being improving your planets health too!

“My most grateful thanks for all the care and attention I have received over the last 3 years. Everyone has been so pleasant and caring. Nothing has ever been too much trouble.”

Get the support you need to stay at home right now - If you’re not eligible for care from your local authority or the NHS, don’t worry; whether you need 24 hour support or just 30 minutes a day, we’re here for you. And the best part? Our prices are up to 20% less than other home-care providers, o ering top-notch care with experienced and caring workers.

Horizon Gazing

There’s a theory that our ancestors, evolving to hunt in the savannah would have scanned the horizon and widened their peripheral vision as much as possible in order to assess the landscape for threats. This act produces a calming effect; no threat means no immediate action needs to be taken. If you were under attack then the field of vision would naturally narrow to sharpen your focus and the flight or fight stress response kicks in. This theory is supported by the work of Dr Andrew Huberman, a neuroscientist at Stanford who says that when we look at something stressful (or exciting) our field of vision narrows so one thing is in laser sharp focus and the rest is blurrier. Our eyeballs actually rotate slightly inwards towards our nose. In contrast, by expanding our visual field the body is able to switch off the stress response.

In todays’ modern world of screens, our field of vision is within a few centimetres from our face focused on the end of our nose. To induce a state of calm and reduced stress allow your eyes to relax and take in a wider panorama or view. If you’re working take regular breaks from the screen, allow your gaze to soften on something in the distance and take in as much of the periphery as you can.

Another option is to gaze on a natural horizon and luckily you don’t have to go far to have a perfect view. With help from my friends in Oswestry’s ‘Girls on The Run’ Facebook group we have the following horizon spotting sites. Not all require effort to walk to, some you can feel the benefit from the car!

The Hillfort, Nesscliffe Hill, the Moelydd Treflach, top of Aston Way from Cabin Lane you can see Rodneys Pillar, the layby on the A495 before Welsh Frankton, the car park at Llanymynech Golf Course (or the top of the rock if you fancy a stroll!) and many more!

Oswestry law firm expanding its team to help get your affairs in order

Whether you need to write a will or get your head around inheritance tax, the friendly team of lawyers at Lanyon Bowdler in Oswestry are here to help.

The firm’s private client team has grown in recent months to meet the growing demand for its serviceswith Kate Lawson returning to her

Oswestry roots as a partner with a key role in the leadership of the team.

Kate says, “I have been with Lanyon Bowdler since the firm merged with the Oswestry-based LG Solicitors 15 years ago, assisting clients with wills, lasting powers of attorney and estate planning from the Shrewsbury office.

“I qualified as a solicitor while working in Oswestry in 2007 so it feels like completing the circle to move to Lanyon Bowdler’s Oswestry office, and I am very much enjoying being part of the Oswestry community once again.”

Along with Kate, the Oswestry team is now made up of Kevin Thomas, Emma Deering, Angharad Hird, Jan Hope and Clare Boote in Oswestryand the team also welcomed Lorna Marlow-Spalding as the new legal support assistant earlier this year.

One of the reasons for the

increased demand for legal advice has been the Government reforms on inheritance tax for farmerssomething which hasn’t been far from the headlines since it was announced.

“Inheritance tax has of course dominated the news agenda but considering how inheritance tax will impact on your estate is an important thing for everyone to do - whether you are in the farming industry or not,” Kate says.

“Our private client team in Oswestry has been busy talking to our clients about how the proposals will affect them, and we look forward to welcoming anyone who would like to discuss getting their affairs in order.”

For advice about estate planning, wills and lasting powers of attorney, please drop into the Lanyon Bowdler offices on Church Street, or give the team a call on 01691 652241.

Look Up

Say goodbye to plain white ceilings and hello to bold colours, patterns and materials.

We’re entering the era of the decorated ceiling. This hugely under-appreciated area of our homes has recently started to become more of a focal point – an area employed to introduce style, colour and character.

Past glories

Decorative ceilings have a long and impressive history, all the way back to the elaborate designs of the Ancient Greeks and coffered ceilings (made of a grid of recessed panels) of the Romans. The Baroque and Rococo periods saw extravagant, gilded stucco – in the Palace of Versailles, for example – intricate wood carving and marvellous frescoes. In Victorian times, UK homes often had tinted ceilings with plaster mouldings. Then in the 1960s came Artex, a coating which allowed nonplasterers to create stippled and swirled designs. It went out of favour in the 1980s with the recognition that older Artex contained asbestos.

So, what is possible today?

Make a statement with paint

The dramatic ‘colour drenching’ fashion means painting walls and ceiling the same shade. In a white or pale room, you could cover the ceiling in a deeper colour to add unexpected interest. Alternatively, if you have a picture rail, you could paint the area above it the same colour as the ceiling.

Using a dark colour lowers the ceiling and creates a cosy atmosphere, while light colours make the room seem more airy.

Murals, trompe l’oeil and paint effects

With a steady hand, lots of patience and some artistic flair, it’s possible to paint anything you like on a ceiling, whether that be an abstract design, geometrics, bold stripes or florals. Hand-painted drifting clouds or a starry sky look beautiful in a bedroom or living space.

Wallpaper perfection

Wallpapering a ceiling is tricky and will probably involve a professional. But the expense and effort should be worth it: a ceiling covered in a statement wallpaper is a glorious thing. In an otherwise plain room, this could be the finishing touch, or it could be a continuation of the walls.

Material change

How about stepping away from plasterboard and installing a ceiling made from rustic timber, tongue-andgroove or wooden slats? Some wood panelling is also acoustic: helpful in an apartment or a busy home. If you’re feeling daring, you could consider other materials, such as Victorian-style tin tiles, cork (another acoustic option), glossy ceramic tiles or even tented fabric for a quirky, circus-like feel.

Keep Your Lawn Lush with Our NutraGreen Summer Long Treatment

Summer is when your lawn gets the most attention— from garden parties and family games to moments of quiet relaxation in the sunshine. But it’s also the season when your grass works its hardest, especially during dry spells. That’s where our NutraGreen Summer Long treatment steps in.

Designed to deliver 4–5 months of sustained nourishment, Summer Long is the longest-lasting treatment we’ve ever created. Its controlled-release, no-scorch fertiliser feeds your lawn gradually, responding only when the conditions are right. That means greener grass for longer— without the peaks and troughs of standard treatments.

The difference lies in the science. Our slow-release fertiliser has a specially coated formula that outperforms typical DIY feeds and competitor offerings, lasting up to twice as long. You’ll also benefit from our targeted herbicide spray, which tackles persistent summer weeds that compete with your grass for moisture.

This treatment not only enhances your lawn’s summer appearance—it also prepares it for the transition into autumn. Healthier grass now means a stronger, more resilient lawn in the months ahead.

For best results, we recommend watering your lawn during extended dry periods. But if rain is on the horizon, there’s no need to worry—our feed will wait and activate when the moisture returns.

Our slow-release fertiliser has a specially coated formula that outperforms typical DIY feeds and competitor offerings, lasting up to twice as long.

To boost performance even further, consider adding our Oasis Treatment. This professional wetting agent improves root development, stress tolerance, and includes a powerful seaweed extract known to enhance lawn colour.

Included in our Basic, Standard, and Ultimate Programmes, NutraGreen Summer Long is the smart, simple way to ensure your lawn looks its best—through summer and beyond.

Family Friendly Gardens to Visit in July

The wonderful sunshine we enjoyed this spring ensured plenty of visitors to our gardens throughout North Powys. With record attendance at Llanrhaeadr village opening and Bachie Uchaf, nearly £2,000 was raised for the National Garden Scheme charities. Even the traditional Bank Holiday rain in late May did not deter the 300 visitors who flocked to Garthmyl Hall.

On Sunday 6 July (11-5PM) we have another group opening at the picturesque village of Leighton, just outside Welshpool. The seven gardens on view encompass a range of styles, sizes and approaches. Surrounded by gorgeous views of the Mid Wales countryside, home-made teas will be served in the village hall. Combined admission £6, children free.

Tregynon (SY16 3EH) is the home of Gregynog Hall, and the venue for our third village opening on Sunday 13 July (1-5PM). There are five small gardens with a range of styles: a plantswoman’s garden with unusual plants, productive gardens, rose gardens and a beautiful community garden with a wildlife meadow. Home-made teas at Parson’s Field. Combined admission £6, children free.

Eve’s Garden near Llansantffraid (SY22 6TB) will be open on Sunday 20 July (11-5PM). Vibrant borders with plenty of interest surround the house and its beautifully

manicured gardens. Many plants for sale; home-made teas. Admission £5, children free. The following Sunday 27 (12-5PM), sees the opening of Bryngwyn Hall near Llanfyllin (SY22 5LJ). This award winning nine-acre garden was inspired by William Emes and has a poison garden and huge serpentine lake. Dogs welcome, homemade teas. Admission £ 7, children free.

Another village opening is scheduled for Sunday 27 July (12-5PM) at Berriew, 5 miles south of Welshpool. Seven delightful gardens can be viewed in this picture-perfect black and white village on the banks of the River Rhiew. Riverside, cottage and productive vegetable gardens show what can be achieved in small spaces. Plants for sale and home-made teas at the Community Centre. Combined admission £7, children free.

The Rock House

July in the garden

It’s funny that I always start this column talking about the weather! This month is no exception. The hot, dry spring led us into a false sense of security with everything being a few weeks advanced. Then the cool, windy spell knocked everything back. The initial dryness and then strong winds have damaged some decorative trees and shrubs, leaving them rather bare. The roses, however, seem to have really benefitted from the conditions. Can’t remember them looking so good.

The daily walk around the garden is so important, but perhaps more so now. Spotting issues early means that it’s easier to rectify. Infestations, and lack of water can be solved quickly. Removal of the odd bright red Lily Beetle now will stop them stripping the whole plant later. Did you know that the Lily Beetle isn’t native to the UK? It was first found over a hundred years ago in the south and has gradually spread, reaching us around 2005.

All the annuals should be reaching their peak. Keep them at their best by regularly dead heading. Hanging baskets will really benefit from a good soak. Plunging into a large container of water containing feed and allowing the bubbles to subside will mean a good water. If you

just water from the top, most will run off leaving the underlying compost dry.

Yellowing of leaves suggest a feed is in order. Make sure you read the instructions and give them the correct dose. Everything could do with a general feed now to keep things at their best and in the greenhouse feed the tomatoes weekly. Make sure you regularly water them to avoid the fruit splitting.

On the allotment it’s always a shame to see your prize fruit being eaten by birds. You can use all types of scarers to keep them away, but if you do have to resort to netting, make sure you keep it nice and taut to ensure the birds don’t get tangled up.

YOUR LEGACY YOUR WAY

DO YOU HAVE AN ESTATE PLAN?

When people hear “estate planning”, they often imagine sprawling mansions and antique paintings. But the reality is, if you own a home, have a pension, savings and investments, or simply want a say in what happens down the line, you most likely need an estate plan.

Surprisingly though, many UK adults don’t have one in place - or even realise they might need it. As a result, key decisions about their assets, future care, and who can act on their behalf are often left to chance or decided by the default legal rules.

Estate planning helps you take control of this. Its purpose is to put clear, practical arrangements in place, so your money, property and personal wishes are handled the way that you want; both during your lifetime and after.

Many people assume that writing a will is enough for this, and while it’s an essential part of planning ahead, it’s just one piece of a much bigger puzzle.

Estate planning can also help you:

• Reduce inheritance tax that loved ones might have to pay, using allowances, exemptions or trusts

• Protect your assets for future generations, or for specific family needs

• Ensure pensions and investments pass to the right beneficiaries

• Plan for care costs, so they don’t eat into your estate unnecessarily

• Give someone you trust the legal authority to act for you if you’re no longer able to

• Minimise stress and uncertainty for your family at a difficult time

Of course, everyone’s circumstances are different. That’s where guidance from an independent financial adviser can really help.

At Belgrave Wincham, we take time to understand every aspect of your current financial picture, explain the options available to you and help you create a clear, straightforward plan.

For a free consultation about estate planning, call Belgrave Wincham on 01691 886554.

Q&A

with GHP Legal’s

Can I bring a claim for negligence on behalf of Mum in a Care Home?

My mum moved into a care home following a stroke. She is unable to speak or write but still has mental capacity. I am unhappy with her care and have been fobbed off by the home whenever I have questioned unexplained bruising on her. There have been other things too. I cannot get her moved as there are no nearby vacancies and so haven’t pushed a complaint in case they take it out on her. Now a former employee of the care home has told me things that justify my concerns. Could I bring a negligence claim on Mum’s behalf? If so, what do I need to prove?

A: Care providers, such as a nursing home, residential facility, or in-home care agency, have a duty to provide acceptable standards of care, preventing harm or deterioration in a resident’s health or wellbeing. This is a duty under the law of negligence and can include breach of the contract to provide care.

To bring a case of negligence against the care home you would need to prove that the home has failed in its legal duty of care to your mother. You would also need to prove a breach of duty by, for example, failing to meet their duty in providing adequate care or a safe environment. Finally, you would need to show causation of harm or damage i.e. that the breach of duty caused your mother harm, injury or even death.

Someone with a relative in care who lacks mental capacity due to a condition like dementia can act as a Litigation Friend. Since it would appear that your mother is unable to write or speak, with medical evidence about your mother you may similarly be able to apply to the court to become a Litigation Friend and attend court on her behalf.

Before taking further steps, you should make an appointment with a local solicitor who specialises in personal injury claims.
